Jodhpur: A Complete Guide to India’s Blue City

July 25, 2019 · In: India

Known as the Blue City, Jodhpur is the second largest city in the Indian state of Rajasthan. It is also affectionately known as Sun City due to the extensive heat that penetrates the city year round. This is one of the reasons for the indigo painted homes. The indigo acts as a natural coolant and provides relief for the local residents.

Jodhpur is easily walkable once you’ve reached the Old City by the clock tower. We found this to be a nice change of pace from many of the other cities in India and we felt ourselves slowing down and enjoying the local way of life.

The Top Things to See & Do in Jodhpur

› the stepwell (toorji ka jhalra bavdi).

Built in the 1740’s, this step well was one of the main sources of water during ancient times.  Like all of the step wells you will see throughout India, the Toorji Ka Jhalra bavdi has multi-level steps allowing you to reach the water at any level.

Unlike the famous step well in Jaipur where the guards will either not let you in or charge you a “fee”, this place is completely free.

› Mehrangarh Fort

As one of the largest forts in India, the Mehrangarh Fort was once a palace and now a museum. It was the most well preserved fort that we visited during our stay in India and the museum was very informative. When you purchase your ticket the cost includes a free audio guide.

› Get Lost Wandering the Blue Streets

Spend the day wandering aimlessly through the azure colored streets and admire all the stunning architecture which dates back to more than 150 years. You can get easily walk from the main clock tower, through the alleys and all the way around to the back side of the Fort.

› Climb Rooftops for the Best Views

There will no doubt be plenty of rooftops where you can capture those stunning shots of the Mehrangarh Fort and the iconic blue houses of Jodhpur. A lot of these views can be found by heading up to one of the many rooftop cafes. And don’t feel like you have to order a full meal. You can easily just get something to drink and enjoy the view.

› Jaswant Thada

Located a short distance from the Mehrangarh Fort, Jaswant Thada is a cenotaph built in 1899. This white marble mausoleum serves as the cremation grounds for the royal family of Marwar. The main structure stands in the middle of a beautiful garden surrounded by stunning views of Jodhpur.

› Pachetia Hill Viewpoint

The absolute best place to get those epic sunset shots is at the Pachetia Hill Viewpoint. To get there, hire an inexpensive tuk tuk to take you to this exact GPS coordinate: 26.294710, 73.017635.

As Jodhpur  is located in the state of Rajasthan, most visitors will typically start in either Udaipur or Jaipur before continuing onwards to Jodhpur. There are multiple ways to reach Jodhpur from anywhere in Rajasthan, all ranging in costs.

The easiest, most stress free way is to hire a personal driver . There are many companies which will provide these services and typically you will pay a fee per kilometer.

We did the a/c bus option and it cost 420 INR per person (~6 USD) with the journey lasting about 4.5 hours. Our bus started in Ajmer since we were in Pushkar prior to going to Jodhpur. If you also want to visit Pushkar then you will need to take a taxi or UBER from Pushkar to Ajmer first.

There are no direct options from Pushkar for either the bus or the train. The taxi from Pushkar to Ajmer cost 500 INR (~7.25 USD) and we set it up through our hostel.

There is also the option of  Taktal. This is where they reserve a certain number of seats that you can purchase the same day. These tickets will be more expensive but at least you’ll be able to get a seat.

You could also check flights to Jodhpur as India has some very low cost airlines. We used IndiGo Air a few times while in India. The flights were inexpensive and also include a checked bag!

Getting Around Jodhpur

By far the easiest way to get around Jodhpur and all of India is to use UBER. You can also download and use OLA, which is India’s local version of UBER. We made some new friends in Udaipur and saw how the OLA app works.

It is similar to UBER but slower and requires more information. Honestly, either is probably a good enough option and they are around the same price.

One of the things we loved the most about using UBER (or OLA) is that there is no haggling and you don’t have to give the driver directions. The app sets a rate, which is significantly cheaper than a tuk tuk, and the driver has google maps connected to the app. All you have to do is sit back and relax in the a/c!

› Where to Eat

During our time in Jodhpur we mostly ate at our Luxury Homestay: The Almond Tree. Their food was incredibly tasty, we knew it was fresh and the prices were the same as in the city.

› Where to Stay

We stayed in Jodhpur a total of 5 nights with 4 of those being at The Almond Tree: A Luxury Guesthouse. We loved every second of our stay here and would highly recommend to anyone traveling to Jodhpur. Located in a quiet neighborhood just on the outskirts of the Old City, this homestay was the perfect retreat.

Our last night in Jodhpur we stayed at the Park Plaza Hotel Jodhpur. This is a larger hotel with great amenities such as a swimming pool, gym, restaurant and on-site pool. The rooms are comfortable and bright and the staff is warm and welcoming.

An eVisa to India is required for almost all international travelers. You can apply online for the eVisa prior to your arrival in India and it is a relatively easy process. I did my application through ivisa.com  which is slightly more expensive (by about $30) due to processing fees but is completely stress free and worth it.

Make sure you apply about 7-10 days prior to your arrival in India. Sometimes the processing time could take a few days!

Jodhpur ( Hindi : जोधपुर) is the second largest city in the state of Rajasthan . It is called the Gateway to Thar , as it is on the edge of the Thar desert. It is also called the Sun City as the sun shines (bright and hot) almost every day of the year.

Understand [ edit ]

Jodhpur is a historic city and the origin dates to the year 1459 AD when it was founded by Rao Jodha, the Rajput chieftan of the Rathores. The Rathore kingdom was also known as the Marwar and was the largest in Rajputana.

The city was built as the new capital of the state of Marwar to replace the ancient capital Mandore , the ruins of which can be seen near what is now the Mandore Gardens. The people of Jodhpur and surrounding areas are hence also commonly called as Marwaris.

Jodhpur is also known as the Blue City , because most houses in the old city are painted in shades of blue. This is particularly noticeable on the north side of the town, known as Brahmpuri due to the many Brahmins that live there.

The forts and palaces, temples and havelis, culture and tradition, spices and fabrics, colour and texture, a booming handicrafts industry, combine to make this historic city worth a visit.

Local government-run bus services are readily available from bus stops at every single landmark for transportation. However, some people consider public transport in Jodhpur to be chaotic and only for those on a shoestring budget.

Taxis ply on a minimum distance/hour per day basis.

  • Various tour operators and travel agencies offer chauffeured car-taxi services; these are charged on a per km, per day basis. You can plan to take one to arrive into the city or take one for sightseeing in and around the city.
  • Autorickshaw taxis are common in the city. But they don't use meters, so agree on a price before sitting in these taxis.
  • Ola and Uber operate in the city, apart from the old town.

By car, bicycle and motorcycle [ edit ]

The narrow lanes of the inner walled city of Jodhpur are best traversed by cars, but can also be explored by bicycle or motorcycle/scooter. There are many car rental companies available.

Other [ edit ]

  • Tongas - horse-driven carriages.

The name "Fort" belies the size of the complex, which houses the Maharaja's palace, several temples and, tucked away in the back, an extensive garden still farmed to this day. Highlights within the palace include:

  • Chamunda Mataji Temple . Tucked away at the far end of the battlements, this temple is devoted to Rao Jodha's favourite goddess and remains a local favorite to this day.
  • Moti Mahal . (Pearl Hall). Pearl-coloured inside and decorated with coloured glass windows, this is where the Maharaja held his audiences, with the five alcoves on the far wall allowing his queens to listen.
  • Phool Mahal . (Flower Hall). The most extravagant of them all, this was the Maharaja's pleasure chamber, for dancing girls and revelry.
  • Sheesh Mahal . (Mirror Hall). Just what the name says.
  • Zenana Deodi . The inner sanctum of the palace once guarded by eunuchs, this is where the Maharaja's wives whiled away their days. The delicate sandstone screens and carvings are exquisite.

A number of people are employed here and there to add flavour by dressing in period costume and doing photogenic things like playing traditional instruments and smoke opium (yes, the real thing). Snap away, but they'll appreciate a tip if you do. The museum also includes galleries devoted to howdahs (elephant-mounted seats), palanquins, fine arts, weaponry and the inevitable Turban Gallery .

Entry for foreigners is ₹600, and includes an excellent audio guide, or ₹400 for foreign students. ₹100 photography fee.

Entry to the fort is free each year on its birthday (about the 12 May), and is not as crowded as you would think.

Buy [ edit ]

jodhpur tourism map

The city's main shopping area is Nai Sadak , lined mostly with sari and shoe shops and leading into Sardar Market , a bustling Indian market with a riot of sights, sounds and smells. The clocktower in the centre is a useful orientation point. Best try different shops by yourself, as rickshaw drivers and other locals will do their best to direct you into certain shops where they can earn a commission for sales; you can expect to get better prices if the shopkeepers do not have to pay a percentage to these other guys. And be prepared to spend a good hour or more in a shop chatting with the very friendly owners over a cup of masala chai. This is the true highlight of Rajasthani hospitality. You will find Rajasthan (and especially Jodhpur) to be full of amiable and kind people who will be quick to offer you chai as a symbol of genuine hospitality first and foremost (not at all significant of an attempt to coerce you to buy). It is not uncommon for them to turn their shop upside down to show you all of their goods, as many are quite proud of their business. Popular souvenirs include:

  • Bandhej sarees and dress material
  • Handicrafts these are handmade (made to look like old antiques), the handicraft industry is a booming industry in this city.
  • Mojris or Jootis. Shoes with a pointed front, a must-have accessory if you plan on dressing like a Rajput Maharaja.
  • Spices and tea Expect to pay ₹100-150 for each 200 g packet of spices or 150 g packet of tea. Among the highlights are the various masala mixes: different one for vegetables, rice, meat, fish, etc.; individual spices: especially cardamom, vanilla, and saffron; tea: including the cinnamon-infused Kashmiri Khawa, masala mix to add to assam/darjeeling, and ginger tea. Be sure to stop in various different shops as each store has their own recipe for mixing their own blend.
  • Textiles Far better prices here for rugs, scarves, duvet covers, etc. than buying in Delhi. Scarves are the top sales item with prices varying from ₹50 to ₹3,000 depending on the material (pashmina, silk, kashmir, blends, etc.)

There are numerous shops around town:

  • 26.29562 73.0237 1 Bishnoi Village Art , Shop No. 10, Near Police Station ( Past the clocktower on the left hand side after entering Sardar, next to an internet shop ), ☏ +91 80037-13901 , [email protected] . One of the better places to buy scarves, and share stories for a few hrs with the owner Papu over masala chai and pakora. Papu is very honest and will give you a fair price for his wide assortment of high quality materials.
  • 26.29523 73.02329 2 Mohanlal Verhomal (MV) Spices , Shop No. 209-B, inside Sardar Market ( Left hand side after entering Sardar ), ☏ +91 2912615846 , [email protected] . Manifacturer and exporter of all kinds of spices run by women. Tastings available.
  • Ganesh Handicrafts , 84-85 Nai Sarak ( near Clock Tower ), ☏ +91 291-2624165 , [email protected] . The owner typically invites customers for a cup of masala tea and engages in friendly chats. The shop sells jewellery, textile, clothes (can be tailored-made), and furniture. Prices are fixed, so you don't need to bargain. Some scarves are as cheap as 200rps. They offer international shipping for bulky items.
  • National Handloom , Nai Sadak ( and ten other outlets around the city ). A four-story shop easily identified by their logo of a gloriously mustachioed and turbaned man, the jumble of items inside is authentically Indian, but prices are cheap, clearly marked and hassle-free. The fourth story houses handicrafts and art, with most of the rest devoted to clothes.
  • Nitisha , Located at Rai ka bagh, Near Rajmata School. The store does readymade garments for both men and women, silver and semi precious stone jewellery, cushions, bedsheets and bedcovers, fragrances, gift items, souvenirs, candles, gift packing material, show pieces and handicrafts, gift packaging accessories. All prices are clearly marked on the items and thus there is no chance of quoting high prices.
  • Rajeev's - Grasim Exclusive Showroom , 42-43 Nai Sarak ( about 1km from the Clocktower on left side (walking towards Sardar) ), ☏ +91 291-2627638 , [email protected] . One of the higher end fashion lines (higher than Raymond). Buy custom-made men's clothing here at much more economical prices than in Delhi; for suits expect to pay ₹2,000 for labour, materials are extra with a series of different qualities (all prices negotiable). Suit construction takes 1-2 days after fitting.
  • 26.2928 73.02474 3 Suncity Spices , 112 Nai Sarak ( on the right hand side towards Sardar, about 1km from the Clocktower ), ☏ +91 291-5102155 , [email protected] . One of the top spice/tea shops where the friendly and honest owner Mohammed will quietly offer you lower prices than on the list if you come in without a driver, i.e. no commission. ₹120 for each packet of spice/tea, and ₹100 per gramme of saffron. Wide selection of teas including flavours such as lemongrass & cucumber, lychee and guava
  • Via Bishnoi Village Craft , Jhalamand Circle, Near CTC Petrol Pump, Pali Road. , [email protected] . One of the better places to buy old and new handmade traditional and modern embroidered & patchwork textiles, shawls & scarves, clothing, fabrics, etc.

Eat [ edit ]

Restaurants as you find them elsewhere are somewhat hard to find in Jodhpur, except for around the tourist areas such as in front of the Fort. Otherwise, especially for lunch it's stand-up street food such as samosas.

Rajasthani delicacies include:

  • Mirchi Vada, Samosa and Pyaaj (Onion) Kii Kachori . These are famous Jodhupuri delicacies and here is the best place to eat this, Raju Namkeens (Manak Chowk), the Arora Namkeens, Surya, Janta, Pokar and many more.
  • Makhaniya Lassi — lassi (yoghurt drink) spiced up with cardamom and butter. Best place to have this is at the Mishrilal within the clock tower (Ask anyone there for directions.)
  • Mawa Kachori. Best place to have the same is at Chele Ki Dukaan (Jayanti Lal), Loharo ka Baas, Old City Area. Pokar sweets or Janta Sweets at Nai Sarak.
  • Panchkuta, Dal Bati Churma and Gatte ka saag. Best place to eat the same is at Bhati Restaurant behind sojati gate and Shandar restaurant opposite MG Hospital.
  • Kabuli, a rice speciality. Try at Pokar Sweets on Chopasani Road, Near Shanichar ji ka than on Saturdays.
  • Gulab Jamun ki Sabji ( Nai sadak ). Pokar sweets, very tasty sabji, made of raw gulab jamun (non sweet). Traditional Jodhpur style sweets.
  • Gulab Jamun , Pungl para ( From Girdikot move towards Tripolia ). Chaturbhuj Ramesh Chandra sweets, very tasty. Every piece is around 50 g. 360 .

Budget [ edit ]

  • Cafe Mehran , Meherangarh Fort. Simple but pleasant cafe in the fort itself, with a range of tourist favorites from pizza to burgers as well as Indian thalis. ₹60-140.
  • Gypsy , Sardarpura - fast food restaurant, quite crowded often but the food is delicious. Rajasthani thali (served upstairs) is one of the best in the city and quite cheap. Thali is ₹ 350 excluding service tax. Popular with locals.
  • New Saheen Hotel (restaurant) , ☏ +91 6 6531533 . Nice restaurant busy with locals and not touristy. For about ₹60-80 you can try several different dishes. Selection includes fish, kababs, dal, paneer and fresh roti with ghee. On the second floor of a building, above a sign "qadri guesthouse", just outside of the old town, in an area full with pharmacies and clinics. ( updated Jul 2018 )
  • Omelette Shop , (aka Garib Hotel ), just outside the gates to the main square. Confusion has arisen after being listed in Lonely Planet as others shops are now claiming to be the ‘real’ Omelette Shop. 5 minutes away is another popular place, Vicky , whose omelettes are identical except for the noticeable increase in the amount of ginger. There is no place to sit, so don't come here expecting to relax with your omelette.
  • Shahi Samosas , Nai Sarak ( left side just before main gate to Sardar Market ). Easily spotted thanks to the never ending queue, their samosas and kachoris are made in front of your eyes with generous amounts of stuffing. ₹6-8.
  • Shandar Sweet Home , Jalori Gate Bari ( near Jalori Gate ), ☏ +91 6 2628057 . Serves excellent Gulab Jamun Ki Sabzi, Kabuli & other Jodhpur specialties, popular with locals & quite economical.

  • Google Maps : the application is quite reliable about the streets and routes of Jodhpur. Incase needed the same can also be used when in need.

Stay safe [ edit ]

This is a comparatively safe city, however it is advisable not to venture out late in the night alone. Only take advice on directions, travel and other things from the concierge desks at the hotel where you are staying or from some other reliable and trustworthy people. Local district administration is extremely helpful, so they too may be contacted in case the need arises.

While travelling in trains or buses, avoid any snacks offered by seemingly well meaning strangers. There have been some incidents where tourists or even locals have been drugged and robbed after consuming narcotic-laced biscuits or tea. Though the incidents of rape or sexual assault are far and few in between, women should avoid wearing revealing clothes in public places since hooligans are known to harass women. Wearing a hijab or having a male companion will avoid this.

The following numbers can be dialed from any mobile or fixed line phone.

  • Police - 100
  • Ambulance - 102, (+91-240)-2473301, (+91-240)-2473302

Beware of touts selling rail tickets or promising reservations on trains. It is a criminal offence to buy and sell tickets except from recognized agents or the reservation offices.

The city of Jodhpur was founded in the year 1459 by Rao Jodha, the chief of the Rathore clan at the time.

After being driven out by the Afghans from their homeland in Kannauj, The Rathore clan fled to Pali, where they established marital ties with the local kingdom which increased their strength. Following which they drove out the Pratiharas from Mandore and established the town as their capital. Later as the need for a more secure capital arose, the Rathores decided to settle in the beautiful city of Jodhpur.

Forts and Palaces - The Royals of Rajasthan

Perched on top of a hill at a height of 410 feet above the city of Jodhpur is the most beautiful structure of the city, the Mehrangarh Fort. Built in the year 1459 by Rao Jodha of the Rathore clan, the fort is an architectural marvel and is steeped in history.

The fort has 7 huge gates which were built by different rulers at different points of time and were made as a reminder of their victory in battles. The fort houses a number of magnificent palaces namely, the Phool Mahal, Moti Mahal, Sheesh Mahal, Jhanki Mahal, Takhat Vilas and Zenana Mahal, and now functions as a museum.

The Phool Mahal is the most elaborate palace in the fort. As the name suggests, Phool Mahal was designed to look like the most beautiful flower, and it does. The palace was made by Maharaja Abhaya SIngh and was intended to be a pleasure chamber for the King

The interior of the palace is laden with gold, uses a colorful palette, and is adorned with paintings and intricate carvings on its walls and ceilings. The built and design of the palace are a fine testament to the extravagant taste of the royals.

Moti Mahal translates to 'Palace of pearls' is considered to be the biggest palace at Mehrangarh and was made by Raja Sur Singh as a darbar or the court where he would listen to the concerns of his subjects.

The palace earns the name due to its surface being covered with a mixture of finely crushed seashells and lime plaster which gives it a shiny look. The intricacies of its interior with the beautiful mirror work, religious paintings and stained glass windows make the palace a sight to behold

The Sheesh Mahal or the Palace of Mirrors is another exquisite palace in Mehrangarh Fort. The palace is known for the marvelous interior with its walls and ceilings covered in mirrors of different sizes and the walls adorning painted panels of various Hindu Gods and Goddesses. Sheesh Mahal was built by Maharaja Ajit Singh and was one of his private chambers.

Built by Maharaja Takhat Singh, the Takhat Vilas served as his residence during his reign and displays a blend of Rajput and British architecture. The walls and ceiling of the palace are decorated with paintings which showcase stories from Hindu mythology.

The Jhanki Mahal was built for the women of the royal family to observe the royal ceremonies since they were barred from coming into public view, and so they observed the ceremonies through the windows of the palace.

This palace at Mehrangarh Fort called the Zenana Mahal was built for the royal women and was kept separated from the men's quarters. The royal women lived at the palace and spent a lot of their time here. The noticeable architecture of the palace includes structures made of sandstones and intricate carvings.

Another marvel at Jodhpur by the Rathore dynasty is the Umaid Bhawan Palace. Built by Maharaja Umaid Singh, it is another place for tourists to explore. The Palace is divided into three parts, a luxury stay hotel, museum and the private residence of the royal family of Jodhpur.

The Chamunda Mata Temple was built by Rao Jodha of the Rathore dynasty, and is situated at the Mehrangarh Fort.

The Rathore King brought the deity of Goddess Chamunda from the previous capital of Mandore to Jodhpur and established it at the temple. The story of the temple revolves around the making of the Mehrangarh Fort.

Apparently before the King decided to build his capital at this hilltop, it used to be a residing place of a certain Sage, who did not wish to move even after multiple requests by the King. As a result, he was forced to leave the hilltop by the King's troop. He left, but cursed the kingdom will forever face water scarcity and drought. To avert this curse, the Chamunda Mata Temple was set up.

Another marvelous temple at Jodhpur is the Mahamandir Temple. The beautiful temple is a Shaivite temple and is supported by 84 intricately carved pillars. The temple is a popular site for tourists when they visit Jodhpur due to its exquisite architecture and is a place you must visit on your trip to the city.

At the Osian village, near the city of Jodhpur are the beautiful temples of Osian. The village houses a number of Jain and Hindu temples, and is therefore also called the 'Khajuraho of Rajasthan' due to the presence of the many temples. The temples which are known primarily include the Surya Temple, Harihara Temple, Sachiya Mata Temple and Mahavira Jain Temple.

A fascinating temple near Jodhpur that is truly one of a kind is the Om Banna Temple or the Bullet Baba Temple. The Temple is located on the NH 62 on the Pali-Jodhpur Highway and is dedicated to a young man called Om Singh Rathore who passed away at the site due to a bike accident.

The bullet bike of Om Banna is at the temple and is kept in a glass case, which is worshiped by the people along with the tree which the bike crashed into. The local people as well as travelers stop by and pray to Om Banna for a safe journey. The peculiar temple is a place that you should include in your itinerary to Jodhpur.

If you’re planning your first trip to Jodhpur, I’ve got your back. I’ll tell you how to get there, the best season to go, where to grab a bite, sleep well, and all the fun stuff to do and see. Let’s make your visit to Jodhpur easy and awesome with our travel guide to visiting Jodhpur!

jaswant thada jodhpur rajasthan india

Jodhpur, the second-largest city in Rajasthan , is nicknamed the Blue City because of the blue houses in its old quarter. Even though the blue houses are fewer now and spread out, they’re still there.

Walking through the narrow, twisting streets of the old city, I managed to find some of these old blue Brahmin homes. It’s a lively place. You’ll see women doing daily chores, like washing clothes or chopping vegetables or gossiping with neighbors on their doorsteps, and kids playing games in the lanes.

It feels like the real, everyday life of Jodhpur happens in these streets.

If you take the time to wander these streets, you’ll bump into plenty of culture and, of course, vintage doors and windows (I absolutely adore them). Around you, there will be markets with spices, fabrics, and handmade crafts.

Every corner offers something special — a taste, a sound, a slice of the past, and a piece of story.

Travel Guide to Jodhpur: Things to Know Before Planning a Trip to Jodhpur

Where is jodhpur.

Jodhpur is a city in the Thar Desert of Rajasthan in northwest India. It’s famous for its blue-painted houses and the massive Mehrangarh Fort that towers over the city. And, of course, it’s counted among India’s top cities for tourists .

How Many Days in Jodhpur

If you’re wondering how many days to spend in Jodhpur, I’d say two days should do the trick. That’s enough time to see the big spots like Mehrangarh Fort and Umaid Bhawan Palace without rushing.

You can also fit in some wandering around the old city to see the blue houses and shop in the markets.

With an extra day, you could even squeeze in a day trip to a nearby village or just chill and enjoy some local food. It’s a nice amount of time to get a real taste of what Jodhpur’s all about.

Best Time to Visit Jodhpur

Unquestionably, winter (October to February) is the perfect time to visit Jodhpur or any other city in Rajasthan, for that matter. It’s when the weather is perfect for exploration.

How to Get to Jodhpur

Jodhpur is well-connected by air, road, and rail with all the major cities in India. Indigo, SpiceJet, Vistara, and Air India are the major airlines that operate flights to and from Jodhpur.

A strong network of national highways makes a road journey hassle-free and fun. You can easily drive from Delhi to Jodhpur via NH 48. The entire journey takes about 11 hours but you don’t need to drive at a stretch as you can halt at Jaipur or Ajmer for a night.

If you don’t want to use your own car, there are many tour operators you can rent a car from. There’s also an option to hire a car with a driver if driving isn’t your cup of tea. Also, there are regular trains and buses (state buses, deluxe buses, or coaches) from different cities in India to Jodhpur.

How to Get Around Jodhpur

Jodhpur is a compact city. The old city is best explored on foot. Places that are far from the center of the city can be visited using an auto-rickshaw or taxi or Uber or Ola.

If you don’t want to haggle with auto-rickshaw drivers and want to explore the city stress-free, I’d recommend you hire a driver for the entire duration of your stay in Jodhpur.

For travelers who want to make the most of their time in Jodhpur without getting into the hassle of arranging transportation, guided tours are the way to go. Get Your Guide and Viator offer some mind-blowing private and group tours .

Where to Stay in Jodhpur

view of mighty mehrangarh fort from our room in jhankar haveli jodhpur

There’s no dearth of places to stay in Jodhpur as it’s a prime tourist city in Rajasthan. I’d suggest you book accommodation in the old city as most of the attractions are nearby.

We stayed at Jhankar Haveli . It was a nice experience, however, we would not recommend booking it if you’ve young kids. They don’t have a lift and the stairs are too steep.

Other best places to stay in Jodhpur (as per travelers’ ratings) include Pal Haveli , Singhvi Haveli , RAAS , Ratan Vilas , and Ajit Bhawan . You can book the iconic Umaid Bhawan Palace for an ultra-luxurious experience.

Mochi Bazaar for Rajasthani mojris

Nai Sarak and Kapraa Bazaar for Rajasthani fabric like bandhani and leheriya

Sarafa Bazaar for silver jewelry

I did not visit Umaid Bhawan Palace Market , but it’s also popular in Jodhpur, especially for antiques .

Special recommendations – Bibaji Churi Wale for hand-crafted bangles , Pukhraj Durry Udhyog for colorful durries (handwoven rugs), and Maharani Textiles and Handicrafts for export quality fabric and art pieces .

We also loved shopping at the Mehrangarh Museum Shop . You can buy some cool souvenirs like fridge magnets, stoles, t-shirts, tote bags, coasters, coin purses, and much more from here at reasonable prices. The profit goes toward the restoration and conservation of the historic fort.

This 2 hours guided shopping tour by Yo Tours takes you through the vibrant and lively markets of Jodhpur.

What to See and Do in Jodhpur

mehrangarh fort

In Jodhpur, there’s a lot to see and do, and it’s all pretty beautiful and unique. First up, you’ve got to check out Mehrangarh Fort . It’s huge and sits on a hill so you can see it from all over the city. Inside, there are palaces and a museum with all sorts of amazing stuff from way back when.

beautiful doors and carvings at mehrangarh fort in jodhpur

Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park is a cool spot too, especially if you like nature. It’s right next to the fort and has all these walking trails and plants that are from the desert.

Then, there’s the Umaid Bhawan Palace . Part of it’s a hotel, but you can visit the museum part and see how the royals lived. And don’t miss the Jaswant Thada ; it’s a beautiful white marble memorial that’s super peaceful.

vintage doors blue city old jodhpur

For something different, head to the blue parts of the old city . The streets are narrow and it feels like stepping back in time. You’ll see those vintage doors and windows I love and get to capture some great photos.

You should also walk around the markets. Sardar Market near the clock tower is perfect for picking up souvenirs, trying mounth-watering street food , or just watching the city buzz.

If you’re up for a day trip, go see the Bishnoi villages . It’s a different world there, where people live in mud huts and really care about nature.

mandore garden jodhpur

You can also take a trip to the desert and have dinner under the stars, or visit the ancient town of Mandore with its gardens and ruins.

panoramic view over the blue city from the fort

Also, you should definitely climb up to Pachetia Hill . It’s a bit of a hike, but the view from the top is awesome.

Don’t forget about the ancient stepwell, Toorji Ka Jhalra . Not as maintained as Chand Baori or Panna Meena ka Kund, but a nice historic place to add to the list.

We hope this guide makes planning your first trip to Jodhpur easier. Remember, if you have any questions or need a bit more info, just give me a shout. Have a great trip, and I’m excited to hear all your stories when you return!

Top 13 Things to Do in Jodhpur, Rajasthan

jodhpur tourism map

We independently evaluate all recommended products and services. If you click on links we provide, we may receive compensation. Learn more .

Jodhpur, the second-largest city in Rajasthan (albeit pleasingly unspoiled by haphazard development), has a fascinating past. Located on the edge of the Thar desert, about 155 miles from the border with Pakistan, Jodhpur is, in fact, where the eponymous pants got their name from! These unusual pants were designed by the Maharaja of Jodhpur's son, Pratap Singh, and worn by his polo team when visiting the Queen of England in 1897. It is famous for its blue buildings, initially painted to signify that they were occupied by Brahmins, the highest caste in India.

This list of top Jodhpur attractions and places to visit will give you a diverse city experience. Jodhpur Heritage Walk conducts an immersive three- to four-hour guided tour through the city. If you have a spare day or two, visit nearby Bishnoi village or Osian, where you can see carved temples and go on a less-touristy camel safari.

Explore Mehrangarh Fort

Imposing Mehrangarh Fort, which rises above the "Blue City," is one of the largest and most famous forts . As impressive as it is, as a well-preserved heritage structure, there's so much more to discover inside. The fort has been privately restored, and its museum has an outstanding display of royal memorabilia, including about 15,000 items from Maharaja Gaj Singh II's collection. It also has the only professional museum shop in India. The cultural performances that happen daily at various places inside the fort, as part of the particular focus on folk art and music, are another highlight. Plan your visit with this complete guide to Mehrangarh Fort .

Want a romantic evening dinner? The Chokelao Mahal Terrace restaurant serves traditional Rajasthani cuisine, which sparkles below. The Fort is also an evocative setting for music festivals. Don't miss the annual Rajasthan International Folk Festival in October and World Sufi Spirit Festival in February .

Ride the Jodhpur Flying Fox

Adventure lovers can't pass up the unique opportunity to zip-line with Mehrangarh Fort as the backdrop. The circuit has six zip lines and takes around 90 minutes to complete. Groups of up to 12 people depart at appointed times. It's located on the north side of the Mehrangarh Fort.

Relax at Jaswant Thada

In honor of Maharaja Jaswant Singh II, this intricately crafted cenotaph (empty commemorative tomb) was built in 1899. It features white marble lattice screens and whimsical domes, while the inside is adorned with portraits of Rathore rulers. It's a peaceful place to relax and enjoy stunning views of the Fort and city. Many a tired tourist sprawls on the front lawn to recuperate after sightseeing.

Wander Through Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park

The Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park was developed in 2006 to restore the natural ecology of a large rocky wasteland area next to the Fort. Neglected for many years, the park was overrun by an invasive thorny shrub. After the bush was eradicated, more than 80 native species of rock-loving plants from the Thar desert were grown there. The Park extends 70 hectares (around 200 acres) of rehabilitated land and has a walking trail. It's interesting to explore at different times of the year, as its foliage changes with the seasons.

Check Out the Clock Tower and Old City Markets

A trip to Jodhpur wouldn't be complete without visiting the bustling Old City. Many people choose to stay in this area, too, as some of the best budget hotels in Jodhpur are located there and have fabulous Fort views. The Old City's famous landmark, the clock tower, stands at the heart of it—and it's still working! Next to it, Sadar Market retains a traditional village bazaar feel. It's chaotic and colorful and sells almost everything, including handicrafts, spices, saris, and fabric. If you feel uncomfortable in crowds, you might prefer to take a walking tour rather than explore the market area yourself, as the congestion can be overwhelming. These walking tours offered by Jodhpur Magic and Virasat Experiences are two recommended options.

Dine Overlooking the Step Well

Travel and Still life photography/Getty Images

An exciting Urban Regeneration Project is being undertaken to transform the Old City into its former glory, but with a vibrant and hip spin. As a result, Jodhpur has a newly restored yet ancient stepwell, located just north of the clock tower. Built in the 1740s and called Toorji ka Jhalra, it sat stagnant for years until the owners of the new heritage boutique RAAS hotel purified the pool and sandblasted the steps. The area has been turned into a contemporary square with cool cafes and shops, including a Good Earth home decor store and a branch of Jaipur-based Gem Palace. A secret door at the RAAS hotel will take you directly to Step Well Square. Step Well Cafe has the same owners as RAAS and provides the best view over the stepwell. It serves Continental and Indian cuisine, plus alcohol. However, its menu is quite limited.

Stroll Along the Streets of the Blue City

Unlike the crowded clock tower area, the blue part of Jodhpur behind the fort, known as Navchokiya, is refreshingly quiet and devoid of tourists. Don't miss spending some time leisurely strolling along its streets. It's also possible to go on a guided walking tour of the area to learn more about it. You can even stay amid the blue houses: Some of the top options in the area are  Singhvi's Haveli ,  Jewel Palace Haveli , Rani Mahal, and Jaswant Bhawan Homestay .

Tour the Area Around Gulab Sagar

Tim Makins/Getty Images

About 10 minutes walk north of Toorji ka Jhalra stepwell is Gulab Sagar. This 18th-century lake played an essential role in Jodhpur's traditional water management system. Not only does it provide a superb spot for photographing Mehrangarh Fort in the background, but there are also many interesting step wells and temples hidden in the lanes around it. They include Mahila Bagh Ka Jhalra step well and Kunjabihari Temple dedicated to Lord Krishna. You can discover them on this Step Wells and Temples walking tour .

Marvel at Umaid Bhawan Palace

Magnificent Umaid Bhawan Palace, completed in 1944, was one of India's last grand palaces to be built. The royal family of Jodhpur still occupies a section of it. Most of the remainder has been converted into a luxurious palace hotel, and unfortunately, it's off-limits to anyone who's not staying there. If you can't afford $600 or more per night for a room, you can still get a glimpse inside the palace by having a pricey dinner at one of its restaurants or visiting the museum. The museum mainly displays old photos of the Maharaja and his family. There's a vintage watch and car collection as well. If you're into that kind of thing, it's worthwhile going there. Otherwise, you may be disappointed as you'll get to see very little of the palace.

Take a Cooking Class at Spice Paradise

Spice Paradise is a spice shop run by a kindhearted husband and wife team (their unique masala chai blend has been refined and perfected over the years and is highly recommended). In their humble kitchen, they also conduct Indian cooking classes, which are hugely popular with foreigners. Along with delicious recipes, you'll get to meet a lovely family and gain priceless insight into Indian culture. If you don't have much time in Jodhpur, do book in advance as classes are often full.

Sample Some Indian Sweets

If you love not just Indian sweets but all kinds of Indian snacks, you'll want to visit the iconic Janta Sweet Home , renowned for making some of the best treats in Jodhpur. They're fresh and delicious, and the range is vast. Try the Mawa Kachori, a prestigious dish that originated from Jodhpur.

Shop at Sambhali Boutique

Sambhali Boutique is the perfect place to pick up some high-quality Jodhpur handicrafts and clothing in Indian and Western styles. All products are made by underprivileged women taught and employed by the Sambhali Trust. Items include silk and cotton camels and elephants, block-printed scarves and curtains, and shoulder bags. Custom orders can also be placed.

If you're looking for cheap accommodations, the Sambhali Trust operates from a very charming little guesthouse (the Durag Niwas Guest House ) that's a hit with backpackers. Long-term stays with all meals provided are possible.

Visit Mandore and Mandore Gardens

Mandore was the capital of the Marwar region before Jodhpur was founded, but now it's in a neglected state. There's an old fort, an eclectic collection of temples and cenotaphs, and a small museum in the Mandore Gardens. The gardens are beautiful, albeit unkempt in places, and used as a local picnic spot. They're worth visiting for the fantastic architecture and history of a bygone era. The best time to go is during the week when it's quietest. If you love monkeys, you'll find plenty there! But be careful that they don't snatch your food!

Jodhpur itinerary – how to spend 1 or 2 days in the blue city.

Get ready to skip past persistent cows in narrow blue-painted alleyways, press your way through colorful saris, and walk in the king’s footsteps in the magnificent Mehrangarh Fort overlooking the Blue City. We are in Jodhpur, the second largest city in colorful Rajasthan, “the land of kings”.

While I will recommend a minimum of a 2 days Jodhpur itinerary to get the most out of your visit, I will also give a suggestion for places to visit in Jodhpur in 1 day. This way you have an option in case you don’t have the opportunity to stay longer than a day.

Rajasthan is said to be the most colorful state in India and tremendously popular among travelers. In fact, it was the first part of India I ever visited. And I loved it!

What to expect from Rajasthan? Buzzing North Indian street life, pushy sellers, incredible fortresses, endless desert land, working camels, colorful saris, and Indian travelers shoving you into their family photos as if you are a life-long friend. There is so much beauty in Rajasthan !

What to expect from Jodhpur? All the above plus a lot of blue. Lots and lots of blue buildings.

Also, expect getting lost, eating way too spicy food, scamming attempts, and sore feet from all the walking. Hold on to your valuables, put on your best smile, and keep your finger on the trigger of your camera at all times and you will have an unforgettable time!

Disclosure: This post may contain affiliate links. That means that if you make a purchase through one of those links, I will get a small commission at no extra cost to you. If you have any questions about these services or products, feel free to ask me.

Mehrangarh Fort is one of the obligatory places to visit in Jodhpur in 2 days and has spectacular views over the Blue City

Travel safety in Jodhpur

Before we look at the Jodhpur itinerary, let’s talk travel safety. India is, in general, a country known for scams, pickpockets, and group violence. So why should you even want to go to India? And even more so, why should you want to go to the second largest city in Rajasthan?

India is a country of diversity. So, for all the bad and evil you might meet, you meet just as much kindness. Or even more. Generally, a lot more.

In my experience, India is a place to take precautions, keep your eyes open, respect the local norms, and speak to the locals for advice. And Jodhpur is no exception.

You will have to choose who you trust, so make yourself a favor and talk to people openly and fearlessly while you listen to your gut. If your gut says “mieeh?”, then talk to someone else that your gut shuts up around.

Also, as in any other crowded city, keep your valuables close and make sure you don’t leave your bag unattended.

Always agree on any price for transport upfront.

Note: If a bicycle taxi or Rickshaw gives you an incredibly cheap price, it means they will stop by a shop on the way. They get a commission from the shop if you go in and look. That means the cheap price is for a shopping trip and spending way more time to get to your destination. If you are ok with that, fine, but if you want to get to your destination directly, you will have to talk about a different price.

Get travel insurance

Best time to go to Jodhpur

October to March are the coolest months and normally around 20+ degrees Celsius in the day time. It is the absolute best time of year to go sightseeing and on any desert safari.

May to June are the hottest months and temperatures can rise above 40 degrees Celsius in the day time. If you decide to travel in this period, remember to drink a lot of water and use sunscreen all day.

July to September sees lower temperatures and higher humidity. This is the low season in Jodhpur and while you can avoid the crowds, you can also save a lot of money on accommodation .

Where to stay in Jodhpur

Around the clock tower.

The best place to stay in Jodhpur for a night or two is definitely around the Clock Tower. The Clock Tower is a main landmark constructed a century ago in traditional architecture. Surrounded by the Sardar Market twisting through narrow streets with strongly smelling spices, colorful textiles, loud vendors, running children, and the odd cow chewing something from the ground that wasn’t grass.

The animated square is only a 20 minutes’ walk from the main attraction in Jodhpur, the Mehrangarh Fort. It is also central to other attractions and close to the airport.

Paota is a good option to the central Clock Tower, and only a 10 minutes’ drive away. You find both a central train station and bus station in Patoa so you get easily around from there.

If you want to make a difference

Durag Niwas Guesthouse is a welcoming guest house that has also funded a charity organization, Sambhali Trust. Everything is handmade by the women in the supported communities.

The guest house is situated close to the Gaushala Stadium, 4 km from the Mehrangarh Fort and 4,2 km from Umaid Bhawan Palace. It is central enough that you can walk around if you don’t want to get a Rickshaw everywhere.

The buzzing market in Jodhpur

Now, let’s look at a Jodhpur itinerary for 1 day and for 2 days. If you only have one day, feel free to pick from either day beneath. Anyway, I have tried to put what I think is the most important tourist attractions in the first day to make sure you get the most out of your 1 day in Jodhpur.

Places to visit in Jodhpur in 1 day

Mehrangarh fort.

Entrance Fees:

  • Indian visitors: 100 Rs.
  • Foreign visitors: 600 Rs.
  • Camera: 100 Rs.
  • Video camera: 200 Rs.

I recommend that you have your breakfast before 9:00 so that you get to the fortress for when it opens. You should spend a maximum of 3 hours in the fort so that you get the most out of your day in Jodhpur.

With only one day in Jodhpur, you should definitely start off with visiting the majestic Mehrangarh Fort. Sitting on a 120 meters high cliff and spreading across 5 kilometers in the heart of the Blue City it cannot be missed.

Dating back to 1438, the fort is protected by its 35 meters tall and 20 meters thick walls. Canons are situated on the wall, though today they are mainly there for tourists to photograph in front of the implausible view of the blue-painted city.

There are several palaces and temples situated inside the fortress, as well as a museum with artifacts from Rajasthan kings and the Mughal dynasty.

If you have time for the Jodhpur itinerary over 2 days, you can take a ride on the zip-line from the north side of the fort. Find the ticket office for Flying Fox to get your tickets. It is a circuit that takes about 90 minutes with 6 different zip-lines and really worth the ride.

Mehrangarh Fort is the most important of the places to visit in Jodhpur in 1 day

Make time for lunch after visiting the fort. There are several restaurants in and around the fort.

Take a rickshaw to the Umaid Bhawan Palace, it only takes about 15 minutes from the fort, depending on traffic.

Umaid Bhawan Palace

  • Foreign visitors: 100 Rs.

Umaid Bhawan Palace was fully constructed back in 1943 after 14 years of building. The massive structure became one of the largest residents in the world. Today, it is the main home of the former Royal Family of Jodhpur with a total of 347 rooms.

One part of the palace is managed by Taj Hotels while another part is a museum for visitors that shows the history of the Jodhpur Royal Family. You can also see an incredible collection of classic cars outside the palace.

Get a rickshaw back to the Clock Tower by Sardar Market. This is only a 10 minutes’ drive by rickshaw depending on the traffic.

Umaid Bhawan Palace is a must visit place on your Jodhpur itinerary

Clock Tower and Sardar Market

The rest of the day you should walk around the Sardar Market. It is probably one of the best things to do in Jodhpur, just to experience the everyday life at the market. Also, walking through the narrow streets is a great way to explore the fusion of smells and colors this city has to offer. Don’t get surprised if your path gets blocked by a massive cow. They have first priority always!

When you get hungry, you can find a few restaurants nearby for dinner.

Sardar Market is one of the places to visit in Jodhpur in 1 day

Jodhpur Itinerary – day 2

If you did the zip-line day one and didn’t get the time to do everything, feel free to change any attraction of day 2 so you get to experience what you want to.

Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park

08:00-10:30

Opening hours April to September: 07:00-18:30

Opening hours October to March: 08:00-17:30

Entrance fee:

  • Adult: 100 Rs.
  • Guided walk: 200 Rs.

Get your breakfast before 08:00 so you can get to the park at 8:00. This way you will get the most out of the day.

Next to Mehrangarh Fort, the large, rocky wasteland of Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park spreads across 70 hectares. The rocky wasteland was newly cleared of intrusive plants that were brought from Central America nearly a century ago. Now, the native desert plants get a chance to grow back. The park was founded in 2006 to protect the area and is now a beautiful place to walk around.

To get from the Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park to Jaswant Thada you can take the 15 minutes’ walk down Rajputana Rd. and turn left into Jaswant Thada Rd. Or you can take a Rickshaw that will be there in 3-5 minutes.

Jaswant Thada

11:00-13:00

Opening hours: 09:00-17:00

  • Indian visitors: 15 Rs.
  • Foreign visitors: 30 Rs.
  • Camera: 25 Rs.
  • Video camera: 50 Rs.

Also known as the Taj Mahal of Mewar, Jaswant Thada is a must-see marble structure surrounded by lush green trees by the lakeside. Inside the carefully carved white building, there are beautifully decorated memorials with dedicated artwork and paintings of the former Mewar rulers.

The memorial house was built by Maharaja Sadar Singh in 1899 and named after his father, Maharaja Jaswant Singh II. The royal cremation ground sits just next to the building.

While at the Jaswant Thada you can also appreciate the nearby lake.

Jaswant Thada

After visiting Jaswant Thada it is time for lunch. If you want, you can take a Rickshaw directly to Mandore Garden and find a restaurant around there. It takes about 20 minutes.

However, you also have the time to take a rickshaw towards Gulab Sagar Talab Lake where you find quite a few restaurants nearby.

I definitely recommend trying a thali while in Jodhpur, which is normally the cheapest way of eating. It consists of one big plate with several small dishes and sauces. Often, they come and top up while you eat. This way you can try traditional Indian food the local way.

Mandore Garden

15:30-17:30

Opening hours 08:00-20:00

Entrance Fee: 100 Rs.

Mandore Garden is located 9 kilometers outside the city, though one of the most beautiful places to visit. It should definitely be on your Jodhpur itinerary if you have two days to spare.

Mandore used to be the ancient capital of the Pratiharas who ruled the region back in the 6 th Century AD before Mehrangarth Fort.

The green gardens are spotted with ancient ruins and cenotaphs and calm lakes.

In the evening you can explore Mandore and get your dinner there, or you can take a Rickshaw back to the clock Tower for a stroll and dinner in the nearby areas.

Responsible tourism in Jodhpur

Jodhpur is, without doubt, full of impressions and new experiences. However, there are a few things you should keep in mind as a responsible tourist to the Blue City.

The Blue City Jodhpur

Photographing people

Before you take photos of people, no matter how colorful and traditional looking, remember that they are people, just like you and me. Ask them if it is ok for them that you take their photograph. Especially children, you should always get consent from an adult family member.

I can’t stress this enough! Never give money to people performing with animals . Never take photos with animals. Also, don’t ride animals . The animals deserve being free, and as long as tourists pay people for anything related to animals, they will keep being maltreated, malnourished, and used for our amusement.

In Jodhpur, you might see cobras in baskets, you might be offered a camel ride or a selfie with a monkey. There is also a zoo in the city. Instead of spending money on these activities, look up a way to see these animals in the wild in an ethical way.

Waste management

Waste management in India is probably non-existent. Anyway, I recommend that you throw your rubbish in a bin instead of the street. At least you have done your part.

I also suggest you bring your own filtered reusable water bottle like a Life S trawGo .

Get your Life S trawGo filtered water bottle here

I hope you get an incredible experience in Jodhpur!
