Sammy Hagar to Celebrate Van Halen on Tour With Joe Satriani, Michael Anthony, and Jason Bonham

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony are teaming up with guitarist Joe Satriani and drummer Jason Bonham for a summer tour that will focus largely on the music of Van Halen . They’re calling it The Best of All Worlds. Loverboy is opening up.

Hagar and Anthony previously worked with Satriani in the supergroup Chickenfoot. They cut two albums between 2009 and 2011 and toured across America but never performed a single Van Halen song. Once Chickenfoot ended, Halen and Anthony started playing the Van Halen catalog again with guitarist Vic Johnson and Jason Bonham in Sammy Hagar and the Circle. This new lineup is essentially a mashup of Chickenfoot and the Circle, and it’s the closest thing realistically possible to a Van Halen tour at this point.

Sammy Hagar tour: Van Halen songs on playlist for Michael Anthony, Joe Satriani, Jason Bonham

Portrait of Mike Snider

Sammy Hagar plans to revitalize some Van Halen vibes on his upcoming summer tour.

For The Best of All Worlds Tour, Hagar and his bandmates in The Circle – bassist Michael Anthony, a founding member of Van Halen, and drummer Jason Bonham – will be joined by guitarist virtuoso Joe Satriani , who has recorded and performed with Hagar and Anthony in the band Chickenfoot.

The itinerary kicks off on July 13 in West Palm Beach, Florida, and the tour hits a total of 28 cities, concluding August 31 in St. Louis, Missouri. Loverboy will serve as the opening act.

Pre-sales begin on Wednesday, Nov. 15, at 10 a.m., with general on-sale starting Friday, Nov. 17 at 10 a.m. local. For more information go to RedRocker.com .

Hagar, 76, joined Van Halen as vocalist in 1985 after David Lee Roth left. Hagar also left the band in 1996, but returned for a 2004 tour. Recently, Hagar says he and Anthony decided to perform songs from their days playing in Van Halen at Hagar's annual Birthday Bash last month in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

"We pulled out a couple of them and it was an instant lovefest with the fans from our first riffs," Hagar said in a statement with the tour announcement. "The music we created is going to outlive us all. They deserve to be heard so it's time we go out and serve the fans that music, while we still can."

The four albums of the "Van Hagar" era of the band – 5150 (1986), OU812 (1988), For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge (1991), and Balance (1995) – were recently re-released in newly remastered editions.

“It’s crazy to think that it’ll be 20 years since Mikey and I played these songs with Van Halen on the 04’ Best of Both Worlds Tour,” said Hagar. “With Joe on board, we can take a deeper dive into those years. We’re going to touch on some hits from my entire career but seeing fans old and new really embrace the new collection set off something in Mikey and I."

Joining the band on keyboards and backing vocals is Australian musician Rai Thistlethwayte.

Entrepreneur and life and soul of the party, rock star Sammy Hagar also known as The Red Rocker (born 13 October 1947) of California, US has been part of some of the most instrumental modern rock bands in America.

Having experimented with a few different bands during high school, Hagar became involved with hard rock band Montrose in 1973 as they released their debut and second album. Although the debut album wasn’t a major success in their home territory, it struck a chord across the pond and saw the band’s popularity sky rocket. During his time in Montrose, Hagar wrote his first song “Bad Motor Scooter” which featured on the first album.

Two years later Hagar parted ways with Montrose and focussed on his solo career and in 1976 released his debut album “Nine on a Ten Scale” through Capitol Records. The album featured tracks penned by Van Morrison and Fleetwood Mac’s Bob Welch and contained songs like “Keep on Rockin’”, “China” and “Flamingos Fly”. Under the wings of A&R man and producer Carter, Hagar released three more studio albums with Capitol until contrasting creative differences saw him part ways with the label.

Moving to new label Geffen saw Hagar achieve major success with the release of his 1982 album “Standing Hampton” which featured the hit singles “There’s Only One to Rock” and “I Can’t Drive 55” which would become his signature tunes. The album peaked at number 28 in the US charts and certified platinum.

More success would follow as he joined Van Halen line up in 1985 and the release of their seventh album “5150” the following year saw the band storm the charts as it went platinum six times over. The next three album releases would see the band clinch the number one spot again and again.

As no stranger to forming super-groups such as HSAS and Los Tres Gusanas, in 2008 Hagar along with Van Halen’s bassist Michael Anthony, joined forces with Red Hot Chilli Peppers drummer Chad Smith and guitar genius Joe Satriani formed Chickenfoot.

Not content with being a seasoned rock star, Hagar has turned his hand at other ventures with his own nightclub, bar and restaurant, producing his own tequila and rum spirits and on top of all that owns one of the most successful mountain bike shops in California. A true rocker through and through, Sammy Hagar’s legacy lives on.

Live reviews

Went to the Sammy Hagar Michael Anthony Jason Bonham show last night in St. Louis. My wife has wanted to see Sammy for years and I took her back when he was in Van Halen. She wanted more of Sammy's solo stuff then, and after last night still does. Started out with "I can't drive 55" then went to "There's only one way to rock." We thought it was awesome. But then the Led Zeppelin started, along with a lot of Van Hagar songs. He did play "Rock candy" but that was a montrose song. Not exactly what we wanted, but it was still a great show. If what your wanting is just Sammy songs, this won't be what you are looking for.

That being said, the sound was amazing. Yes it was loud, but very clear. SAMMY CAN SING! He can sing Zeppelin songs very well, and with Jason Bonham on drums, well it just makes the Zeppelin sound very authentic. At one point Jason did his drum solo and had his dad playing on the video screen behind him. I'm not a Zeppelin fan so to speak but, that was very very cool. He does beat the heck out of the drums.

Vic Johnson is quite a guitar player. He plays very very well. He is a better guitar player than sammy. Micheal Anthony can still play the heck out of the bass. The band has very good chemistry playing together. For it being only the second show live, like they had been playing a lot longer than just the second show. Very impressed. Seemed like they all were having a blast playing, and the music sure sounded like they were. There were some video screen problems: at one point it went out and they didn't have it back on for a while. Needless to say the music didn't suffer at all.

All in all, it was a very good show, just not what we wanted. We wanted Sammy and instead got something we hadn't expected. Sammy is quite a performer. Can sing very well and entertain a crowd. Then when you realize he is 66 years old, you just have to be amazed.

The crowd surprised me. The age of the fans was a much older crowd than I expected, as most concerts I've been to is normally a younger crowd. The old people still know how to have a good time. Guessing more than half the fans around me were around 50, but we're still very passionate redheads. If your a Sammy fan, you will enjoy the show, just know your going to get more Van Hagar and Zeppelin than solo Sammy.

The Circle consists of Sammy Hagar, Michael Anthony, Jason Bonham, and Vic Johnson. The idea behind the band is to get out there and have some fun performing songs from the various projects that came previously. You are just as likely to hear a Van Hagar song as you are a Montrose or Led Zeppelin song. “Good Times Bad Times” was followed by “Poundcake”, which was followed by “I Can’t Drive 55”. The original music videos added a depth to the nostalgia surrounding the show, but props weren’t really necessary when the band sounded so good. We were extremely close to the speakers, yet everything came through crystal clear. With the exception of a technical problem with Michael Anthony’s mic during “Runaround”, it was literally one of the best sounding shows I’ve seen all summer.

“Everybody doing good? What a beautiful place. What a beautiful night. It smells good in here!”

The performance was being filmed for AXS TV, so there were times with Sammy was playing for the cameras, but the overall feeling was that everyone in the band was having a great time. Crowd interaction was at all-time high, as both Sammy and Michael Antony made an effort to work all sides of the stage. There were multiple occasions when they would actually touch those in the front row; high fiving, toasting with red Silo cups filled with tequila, or singing t-shirts and other paraphernalia. The comradery between the musicians was pretty incredible. It really was like seeing a bunch of best friends performing music together…and they all did each other’s songs justice.

Samuel Roy Hagar of Van Halen fame has enjoyed a fairly successful solo career that has run parallel to his other endeavours with bands and collaborators alike. The musician in now nearing his 70th birthday yet the fondly nicknamed Red Rocker will not be retiring anytime soon from the look of his energetic, all consuming rock show.

There is no doubt that this artist lives and breaths rock and roll and throws himself into every single performance no matter how energetic his audience. He always brings a party with tracks such as 'There's Only One Way to Rock' and ensures that the whole room is very much involved from the offset. He performs a number of tracks from his past bands including 'Poundcake' by Van Halen and 'Rock Candy' by Montrose. He has assembled a fantastic live band around him who know the material well and are equally enthusiastic when performing. Hagar runs from side to side of stage throughout the set in order to hype the crowd up to an acceptable level before the finale of Van Halen tracks 'Right Now' and 'Best of Both Worlds'.

I am actually one of those rare Van Halen fans that actually likes Sammy Hager era material better than David Lee Roth. I also think he is a better singer and is much nicer guy to like than David Lee Roth. I also like Hager’s solo material and his stuff with band prior to Van Halen. So anytime he is on tour I want to see him.

This was a great show. So much energy and so much fun. It was an older party crowd and the drinks were certainly flowing but you would be disappointed if that was not the case at this kind of show. He did some of his Van Halen songs but also did great versions of his own hit songs, including “I cant Drive 55” and “There’s only one Way to Rock”. He played for a long time and his band was really good and really loud. The encores were great. It always amazes me that he is over 60 years old, as you would have no idea from the energy he puts into his shows and his music. It also is great that he still tours considering he made a small fortune off the sale of his Tequila brand.

Postponing the concert was a huge mistake, made it really tough on people that had work on Monday. I believe he lost a lot of Red Header’s that would of made the Amphitheatre explode. The lawn wasn’t packed like a normal Sammy concert. My heart goes out to those that did a road trip and purchased a hotel room. Weather on Sunday couldn’t have been nicer though. We had been waiting for this for sooo long, and still enjoyed it, but after what happened Saturday, but we had lost the wing in our sails.

Red Rocker is my favorite artist and loved by all. He is able to get great other musicians to join him and it is always a special event. Sammy is the best Emcee and his energy is shared by all. Dave Grohl was amazing and the best character was Mick Fleetwood that yelled louder than Dave! Amazing show as always Sammy, thank you for your spirit and giving all proceeds to such a worthy cause!

Sammy & friends rocked the place. I've seen Sammy dozens of times & I'd have to say that Saturday's show in Tahoe was one of his best. It was non-stop rocking. The guys (band) were having a great time. Jason drumming along with his Dads was an awesome tribute. Cheers Redheads!

Sammy and the Circle were on their game with great playing and audience interaction. Loved the show. Only negative is I thought it was a little short. They didn't come on until close to 8:30 and were finished by 9:45 maybe.

Sammy hagar was amazing, he put on one hell of a show. Songs that I grew up with, new ones that I will listen to for years to come. At 71 he still has it. I look forward to seeing himin the future.

For the last four decades, Sammy Hagar has been one of rock music's most dynamic and prolific artists. From breaking into the industry with the seminal hard rock band Montrose, to his multiplatinum solo career, to his ride as the front man of Van Halen, Chickenfoot and his latest supergroup The Circle, Hagar has amassed 25 Platinum albums on sales surpassing 50 million worldwide. Along his journey, he has set the tone for some of the greatest rock anthems ever written with songs like "I Can't Drive 55," "Right Now," and "Why Can't This Be Love" and earned the highest respect of the music industry with a Grammy Award and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Hagar is also a dedicated philanthropist, two-time New York Times best-selling author and auspicious entrepreneur.

Since launching his flagship Cabo Wabo Cantina in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico in 1990, Hagar has turned a lifelong passion for great food, music and spirits into a thriving lifestyle brand encompassing successful restaurants, bars, spirits and retail. His annual Birthday Bash has become one of the year’s most legendary jam-sessions for rockstars to perform at and coveted tickets for music fans to attend. He’s since expanded his Cantina brand to include successful outposts in Las Vegas and Hollywood. In addition to the Cantinas, he’s successfully launched Sammy’s Beach Bar and Grill restaurants in four airports, donating his proceeds from these locations to local charities.

Sammy’s now legendary foray into spirits began as a personal quest to find a quality tequila to drink with his friends at the Cantina and by 2007 he and his team had built Cabo Wabo Tequila into the #2 selling premium tequila in the US. In 2010, Hagar sold his interests in Cabo Wabo Tequila to Gruppo Campari in a deal which is widely credited as the start of the celebrity- backed spirits trend. One year after conquering the tequila market, Sammy turned his attention to rum. In its first year, Sammy’s Beach Bar Rum was awarded “Best of Show” by the Nightclub and Bar Show and “Double Gold” at both the Los Angeles Spirits Competition and New York Spirits Competition. In 2017, Sammy returned to the world of agave with the launch of Santo Mezquila, the World’s first tequila-mezcal hybrid. In 2019, he joined forces with acclaimed Emmy Award-winning chef and restaurateur Guy Fieri to expand the Santo brand with the launch of Santo Tequila Blanco, a premium old-world style tequila.

Never one to hit the brakes, Sammy’s expanded his successes into publishing, TV, radio and beyond. Fans have watched him on season eleven of The Voice, where he was a mentor for Team Adam and during five seasons of his hit TV series Rock & Roll Road Trip with Sammy Hagar. In 2015, he scored his second New York Times best-selling book, Are We Having Any Fun Yet? (Harper Collins), the highly anticipated follow up to Red: My Uncensored Life in Rock, his #1 New York Times best-selling memoir. He’s also host of Sammy Hagar’s Top Rock Countdown, a weekly syndicated radio show broadcast to 90+ US stations.

His debut album with The Circle, Space Between, entered the U.S. Billboard 200 chart at #4 on May 10, 2019 and debuted at #1 on four Billboard charts including: #1 - Top Album Sales, #1 - Top Rock Albums, #1 - Hard Rock Albums and #1 - Independent Albums. The band toured throughout 2019 in support of the album, earning universal praise from fans and critics alike. The Circle kicked off 2021 with the release of "Lockdown 2020," an album collection of their massively popular Lockdown Sessions featuring raw and raucous compact covers of classic hits that they'd jammed to backstage but never planned to record. Recorded remotely by each bandmember during the Covid-19 stay-at-homes, the digital music videos which include hits like The Who's "Won‘t Get Fooled Again,” Bob Marley's "Three Little Birds," AC/DC, "Whole Lotta Rosie" and David Bowie's "Heroes” had already reached an online audience of more than 30 million before the album’s release. Sammy and his wife Kari created The Hagar Family Foundation in 2008. The private non-profit focuses on food relief and children’s causes. Hagar’s hardscrabble upbringing instilled in him an unstoppable work ethic that’s been the driving force behind his rise to the top as a musician and entrepreneur - and continues to fuel his dedication as a philanthropist. “Being a poor kid is a little humiliating and it instilled in me a desire to be somebody,” Hagar explained. “It's where all my drive comes from. I was willing to work hard to ensure I was never poor again. Even now, I can still go to that place and remember that feeling but now it drives me to want to give back and to show kids that if you work hard, there’s going to be an open door out.” Since 2008 the foundation has given more than $4 million to local communities. Sammy continues to tour the world with his band The Circle, donating back to local food banks in every city they play. In 2014 he also founded “Acoustic-4-A-Cure,” an annual Bay Area concert featuring acoustic performances by some of the biggest names in music benefitting the UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital. In recent years, he’s also become an in-demand speaker alongside new friends like Warren Buffett. His #1 priority remains being a great husband to wife Kari and father to his children.

Following their interview and performance on The Howard Stern Show on Sirius Channel 100, Hagar, Anthony, Satriani and Bonham will participate in a press conference starting at 10am PT from SiriusXM’s Hollywood Studios, hosted by Eddie Trunk and airing on Wednesday, Nov. 15 on Trunk Nation/Faction Talk Channel 103. In addition on Wednesday, Sammy will be interviewed on Access Hollywood and Access Daily, and on Thursday, Nov. 16 , he chats with Rob Lowe on his podcast Literally! With Rob Lowe .

The tour follows on the heels of the chart-topping success of THE COLLECTION II, the box set released October 6 featuring newly remastered versions of the four consecutive #1 albums released during the Hagar era of Van Halen: 5150 (1986), OU812 (1988), FOR UNLAWFUL CARNAL KNOWLEDGE (1991), and BALANCE (1995). A reminder to fans of the arsenal of hits, many which haven’t been played live since the band’s 2004 reunion tour. Collectively, Anthony, Satriani and Bonham have played together in nearly every phase of Hagar’s career including Van Halen, Chickenfoot and The Circle, so fans can expect a setlist which draws from some of the biggest rock anthems of the last 4-decades, including, Finish What Ya Started, 5150, Your Love is Driving Me Crazy, Best of Both Worlds, Poundcake, Sexy Little Thing, One Way To Rock, Right Now, Good Enough, Eagles Fly and more. They’ve also enlisted legendary Australian musician, Rai Thistlethwayte on keyboard and backing vocals. The tour represents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see this band of brothers deliver one of the most legendary hits-packed live shows of their career.

“It’s crazy to think that it’ll be 20 years since Mikey and I played these songs with Van Halen on the 04’ Best of Both Worlds Tour,” said Hagar. “With Joe on board, we can take a deeper dive into those years. We’re going to touch on some hits from my entire career but seeing fans old and new really embrace the new collection set off something in Mikey and I. We were at my Birthday Bash in Cabo for my 76 th and looked at each other and high fived, like ‘let’s do it.’ We pulled out a couple of them and it was an instant lovefest with the fans from our first riffs. The music we created is going to outlive us all. They deserve to be heard so it’s time we go out and serve the fans that music, while we still can.”

About Loverboy:

For more than 40 years, Loverboy has been “Working for the Weekend” (and on the weekend), delighting audiences around the world since forming in 1979, when vocalist Mike Reno was introduced to guitar hot shot Paul Dean – both veterans of several bands on the Canadian scene – at Calgary’s Refinery Night Club.  Along with Reno and Dean, Loverboy still includes original members Doug Johnson on keyboards and Matt Frenette on drums, with Ken “Spider” Sinnaeve replacing the late Scott Smith on bass.

With their trademark red leather pants, bandannas, big rock sound and high-energy live shows, Loverboy has sold more than 10 million albums, earning four multi-platinum plaques, including the four-million-selling GET LUCKY, and a trio of double-Platinum releases in their self-titled 1980 debut, 1983’s KEEP IT UP and 1985’s LOVIN’ EVERY MINUTE OF IT. Their string of hits includes, in addition to the anthem “Working for the Weekend,” such arena rock staples as “Lovin’ Every Minute of It,” “This Could Be the Night,” “Hot Girls in Love,” “The Kid is Hot Tonite,” “Notorious”, “Turn Me Loose,” “When It’s Over,” “Heaven In Your Eyes” and “Queen of the Broken Hearts.” In September of this year, the group was inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame in Toronto, ON.

About Sammy Hagar:

For more than four decades, Sammy Hagar has been recognized as one of the best and most accomplished lead singers and songwriters in rock music. From breaking into the industry with the seminal hard rock band Montrose, to his multi-platinum solo career, to his ride as the frontman of Van Halen, Chickenfoot and his latest best-selling supergroup, The Circle, Hagar has amassed 25 Platinum albums on sales surpassing 50 million worldwide. Along his journey, he has set the tone for some of the greatest rock anthems ever written with songs like “I Can’t Drive 55,” “Right Now,” and “Why Can’t This Be Love,” and earned the highest respect of the music industry with a Grammy Award and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Since opening his flagship Cabo Wabo Cantina in 1990, he’s turned a lifelong passion for great food, music and spirits into a thriving and iconic lifestyle brand encompassing restaurants and spirits. A pioneer in the spirits industry, he launched Cabo Wabo Tequila in 1996 and catapulted it into the #2-selling premium tequila brand in the United States. In 2010, Hagar sold his interests in Cabo Wabo Tequila to Gruppo Campari in a 9-figure deal that’s widely credited as the start of the celebrity-owned spirits trend. He now owns an award-winning portfolio of top-shelf spirits and beer that embody that same spirit of Baja beach life and rock ‘n’ roll. They include Sammy’s Beach Bar Rum, a partnership with rock icon Rick Springfield, Santo Spirits, a partnership with tastemaker Guy Fieri, Sammy’s Beach Bar Cocktail Co. and Red Rocker Brewing Co. Never one to hit the brakes, Sammy’s also expanded his successes into publishing, TV, radio and beyond, including five seasons of his hit TV show “Rock & Roll Road Trip with Sammy Hagar” and as host of “Sammy Hagar’s Top Rock Countdown,” a weekly syndicated radio show on 90+ US stations. He’s a #1 NYT bestselling author and his cocktail book, “Sammy Hagar’s Greatest Cocktail Hits,” was awarded the 2023 Independent Publisher Book Awards. He’s also a dedicated philanthropist, donating millions back to local communities through his private non-profit Hagar Family Foundation, and the first Honorary Ambassador to Los Cabos, an honor he was bestowed in 2022 in recognition of his longtime investment in the people and economy of Mexico. Sammy Hagar’s Almost Van Halen: Red Rocker Plots Tour With Michael Anthony, Joe Satriani, Jason Bonham

Sammy Hagar  will celebrate the music of  Van Halen  with a new band featuring longtime bassist Michael Anthony  on the  Best of All Worlds Tour . The summer trek set to hit arenas and amphitheaters next summer will see the Red Rocker team up with guitarist  Joe Satriani  and drummer Jason Bonham .

As  Rolling Stone pointed out, this new venture is made up of pieces of previous Hagar/Anthony projects. The two have toured together for the better part of 20 years (since being let go from Van Halen) and previously collaborated with Satriani in the supergroup Chickenfoot which also featured  Red Hot Chili Peppers  drummer  Chad Smith . While Chickenfoot never played a Van Halen song across multiple world tours, Hagar and Anthony did touch on the VH catalog in their next project Sammy Hagar and the Circle  with guitarist  Vic Johnson  and Jason Bonham on drums. For the  Best of All Worlds Tour , Hagar and Anthony have essentially merged the lineups from their previous endeavors to focus on honoring Van Halen songs, among other selections from Hagar’s wider catalog.

“It’s crazy to think that it’ll be 20 years since Mikey and I played these songs with Van Halen on the 04’ Best of Both Worlds Tour ,” Hagar said in a statement. “With Joe on board, we can take a deeper dive into those years. We’re going to touch on some hits from my entire career, but seeing fans old and new really embrace the new collection set off something in Mikey and I. We were at my Birthday Bash in Cabo for my 76th and looked at each other and high-fived, like, ‘Let’s do it.’ We pulled out a couple of them, and it was an instant lovefest with the fans from our first riffs. The music we created is going to outlive us all. They deserve to be heard, so it’s time we go out and serve the fans that music, while we still can.”

A press release states that the new band will play Van Hagar hitters “Finish What Ya Started”, “5150”, “Best of Both Worlds”, “Poundcake”, “One Way To Rock”, “Right Now”, and “Good Enough” on this tour. Hagar enlisted Australia’s Rai Thistlethwayte on keyboards and backing vocals, with  Loverboy  serving as the opening act.

This news comes three years after the death of guitar hero  Eddie Van Halen   whose supercharged playing powered the Van Halen machine for over 40 years. Though there has been plenty of talk of Van Halen reunions or tribute shows in the years since, the Best of All Worlds Tour  is the closest thing to materialize. Satriani has publicly stated that he was approached for a tribute show with  David Lee Roth  and  Alex Van Halen  in 2022 which never came to fruition. Eddie’s son  Wolfgang Van Halen , who leads his own original  Mammoth WVH  and toured with Van Halen for years, has remained adamant about not playing his dad’s songs live (other than at the Taylor Hawkins  tribute in L.A. ).

“That’s a big reason why I don’t ever want to play Van Halen songs,” Wolfgang told  Today . “Because I only want to play with [my father]. And he’s not here to play it.”

Tickets for the Sammy Hagar  Best of All Worlds Tour  go on sale to the general public on Friday at 10 a.m. local time See below for a full list of tour dates. Watch the band perform on The Howard Stern Show in support of the tour announcement.

Concert Review: Sammy Hagar's Best of All Worlds Tour in New Jersey

Steve Vargas

Hard rock stalwart Sammy Hagar brought his Best of All Worlds tour to PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, New Jersey on July 27, 2024. During and after the show, Hagar referred to the venue as “Home-del”, alluding to his connection to the venue and local fans after many performances at the 17,500 capacity amphitheater during his illustrious Van Halen and solo careers, including when it was formerly known as the Garden State Arts Center.

Backed by his companion of nearly forty years – bassist Michael Anthony – as well as guitar legend Joe Satriani and Hagar’s longtime drummer Jason Bonham , the quartet thrilled the sold-out audience with twenty-three songs spanning Hagar’s fifty-plus year career as vocalist (and occasional guitarist) the iconic Van Halen , Montrose , Chickenfoot , and his eponymous solo band. For those who never had an opportunity to see Hagar and Anthony perform with Eddie and Alex Van Halen during their VH careers, this was almost certainty the closest anyone will come to capturing the magic they created from 1986-1995.

sammy hagar tour 2023 opening act

Van Halen’s last performance was in 2015 (with David Lee Roth on vocals and Wolfgang Van Halen on bass), but Hagar and Anthony last performed with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-inducted band was during the 2004 Best of Both Worlds tour. Hagar was at the helm for many of the band’s biggest commercial successes, including 'Right Now ', ' When It’s Love', ' Dreams ', and ' Why Can’t This Be Love? ” Anthony was renown for providing some of the best backing vocals in rock during his four decades with the band, including on classics ' Somebody Get Me a Doctor' , ' Unchained ', and ' Dance the Night Away. '

After they departed Van Halen , Hagar and Anthony continued to tour together and remain close personal friends. On this summer’s trek primarily celebrating the “ Van Hagar ” era but also showcasing several Roth-era tracks performed during Hagar -era tours and popular choices from Sammy’s solo material.

The  setlist was reminiscent of Van Halen’s For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge and 5150 tours. Hagar and co. performed twelve songs featured by VH during the 1991 tour, while nine songs played during this tour were a part of the 1986 tour. Many of the tracks showcased during the Best of All Worlds tour have not been performed by Van Halen or Hagar in decades.

sammy hagar tour 2023 opening act

The band opened with ' Good Enough ' from Hagar’s VH debut record, a song that was not performed by VH in thirty-eight years. The quartet followed with ' Poundcake ', ' Runaround ', and ' Judgment Day ' from the band’s penultimate Hagar release (with Hagar staple ' There’s Only One Way to Rock ' from Standing Hampton mixed in); ' Runaround ' was performed in 2004, but 'Judgement Day ' was performed since the 1995 Balance tour.

Other rarities included ' The Seventh Seal ' and ' Top of the World ' (last played by Van Halen in 2004), as well as 5150’s ' Summer Nights' and title track (not played by VH since 1995). Hagar’s solo band sparingly performed these songs, with ' Seventh Seal ' debuting in a Hagar solo set and several others returning to the live setting for the first time since the early-2000s.

The Best of All Worlds band delighted the crowd with three Roth-era songs – ' Panama ,' ' Ain’t ‘Talkin ‘Bout Love' , and ' Jump .' These were among the select few DLR-penned songs performed by Hagar during his Van Halen tenure, as the band sparingly played Roth-era tracks with Hagar at the helm. Hagar and Anthony shared vocal duties on ' Jump ' and ' Panama ', while Anthony sang ' Ain’t Talkin’…' in its entirety.

Another highlight of the evening was the consecutive performances of ' Right Now ' and ' Why Can’t This Be Love?' , a pair of VH classics routinely performed by Sammy & co. With Satriani performing with Hagar and Anthony , the band also played Chickenfoot’s ' Big Foot' , a song they performed together while members of that band with the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ drummer Chad Smith . The show closed with the crowd-pleasing staple ' When It’s Love .'

sammy hagar tour 2023 opening act

Although the ageless Hagar and Anthony regularly tour and perform many Van Halen songs, this tour is the greatest celebration of their careers as members of the band since their departures. Satriani was electric throughout the evening and “stole the show” at times, displaying his mind-blowing skills while doing justice to the incomparable EVH. Bonham was, as usual, a powerhouse on the kit. The Best of All Worlds Tour will continue through August across the Midwest, South, and West Coast, and any fan of Van Halen , Hagar solo material, or hard rock is encouraged to check out one of this summer’s best amphitheater tours.

DAVID LEE ROTH Is 'Ready' To Take Part In SAMMY HAGAR's 'Best Of All Worlds' Tour: 'Let's Do This'

David Lee Roth says that he is "ready" to take part in Sammy Hagar 's upcoming summer 2024 tour with bassist Michael Anthony , guitarist Joe Satriani and drummer Jason Bonham that will focus largely on the music of VAN HALEN . Support on "The Best Of All Worlds" trek will come from LOVERBOY .

During an appearance on the November 14 episode of "The Howard Stern Show" , Hagar discussed his decision to embark on "The Best Of All Worlds" trek, saying: "It's time. Nobody else is gonna do it. If Dave [ Lee Roth ] goes out, he can't sing my stuff. [But] we can do a few of the early VAN HALEN songs. I have no problem with that; I did it when I was in VAN HALEN . This is really a celebration of all that, and we are the only ones who can do it."

Sammy continued: "We're gonna invite every musician in every town. First of all, whenever you play, if there's a guitar player in town, no matter what city it is, they come out to see Joe , just like they used to for Eddie [ Van Halen ]. So if we've got other guitar players, we'll get them involved, other singers, get them involved. If [ VAN HALEN drummer] Alex Van Halen wants to jump up, if David Lee Roth wants to come out and join us, come on, motherfucker. You are welcome. This is about VAN HALEN ."

In a new statement provided to Van Halen News Desk about Hagar 's invite, Roth said simply: "I'm ready to go. Let's do this."

Hagar and Anthony previously worked with Satriani in the supergroup CHICKENFOOT . They recorded two albums between 2009 and 2011 and toured across America but never performed any VAN HALEN material. More recently, Hagar and Anthony have played some of the VAN HALEN catalog with guitarist Vic Johnson and Bonham in SAMMY HAGAR AND THE CIRCLE .

Hagar mended his relationship with Eddie Van Halen months prior to the legendary VAN HALEN guitarist's October 2020 passing.

Sammy , Eddie , Alex and Michael last teamed up in 2004 for a U.S. summer tour. In exchange for taking part in the tour, Anthony reportedly had to agree to take a pay cut and sign away his rights to the band name and logo.

Produced by Live Nation , the 28-date "The Best Of All Worlds" tour will commence on July 13 in West Palm Beach, Florida and will conclude on August 31 in St. Louis, Missouri.

"We're gonna go deep into the VAN HALEN catalog," Hagar told "The Howard Stern Show" . "If you're gonna go deep into the VAN HALEN catalog, you need Joe Satriani ."

Although Hagar and Anthony normally play five or six VAN HALEN songs" on the road with THE CIRCLE , Sammy told Stern they are planning to only play "five or six of my songs" alongside VAN HALEN classics and deep cuts.

"When we go out next year in July, it will be almost exactly 20 years since Mike and I did a reunion with Ed and Al in '04," Hagar said. " Mike and I just said, 'We can't wait another 20 years. How long can I even sing these songs? How long can I do this stuff? I just thought it's time to serve the fans."

"There's stuff we're going to do on this next tour that we haven't played since that tour in 2004," Anthony added.

Regarding the challenge of learning legendary VAN HALEN guitarist Eddie Van Halen 's parts, Satriani said: "There are things that are so iconic, you have to nail it. But if you go deep with what he did live, he never played the same thing twice. He kept evolving; he kept pushing. He'd do the recorded version a little bit, but then he moved on.

"It's a daunting task when you do the deep dive into what he did," he continued. "But it's good to start at the beginning, and then you just learn all his little improvs and you get the idea of what he was trying to do. It's thrilling; it's fun."

This past April, Hagar , who, along with Roth , spent the summer of 2002 co-headlining the laboriously titled "Sammy Hagar And David Lee Roth Tour 2002: Song For Song, The Heavyweight Champs Of Rock And Roll" , once again dissed Diamond Dave 's oversize ego and deteriorating singing voice.

Hagar reflected on the 2002 run of shows during an appearance on Steve-O 's "Wild Ride!" podcast. He said: "At that time [ Roth ] didn't have a solo career, really. I mean, he did, but he wasn't selling out. I was selling out arenas. I was selling out amphitheaters as Sammy Hagar with the WABOS . And I had a solo career.

"Ask Mick Jagger . Ask Robert Plant . You can be the biggest band in the world and you can't necessarily have a solo career," he continued. "But I had a solo career. So when I joined the big band, I went back to my solo career, I'm good. I still sell a lot of tickets. Dave , he had that sort of a big album, one kind of a big album, but he didn't have a solo career. He was playing small places. So when he came in with me, he was making, like, 25 grand a night, I was making 150 grand a night, and they said, 'Oh, you guys are gonna make the same money. Dave gets to make 150.' I said, 'He ain't fucking made 150 in his life except in VAN HALEN .' But I said, 'I've gotta do this.' So I bent over backwards. And he still always tried to fuck with the rules. He's not a fun guy. He doesn't play well with others. I'm not sure what his problem is… He just always is about, 'How can I make this guy look bad?' And not just me — in life. He's a chest-beating motherfucker. And God bless him, 'cause the early stuff is frickin' great. I personally, I've tried to say… [I thought] he'd be a fun guy to know. But he ain't like that. He ain't like his persona. When you get around him, he ain't that guy. He's some other cat. [ Laughs ]"

Hagar went on to praise Roth 's skills as an entertainer, saying: "He's a showman. Hey, listen, I'm a showman too. But that's his gig. He doesn't care about singing. If he did, he'd take care of his voice or he'd take voice lessons and get warmed up and do something. 'Cause the guy sang so bad last time he was doing shows, it was embarrassing… But he's a showman. Everything's show, show, show, show, show, show, show. And he doesn't care about his voice, which drives me nuts, man. I care more about my voice than I do my dick. If my dick didn't work a couple of times, I'd be okay with it — I'd be bummed out — but if my voice fucks up onstage, I'm fucking bummed , man."

Hagar replaced Roth in VAN HALEN in 1985 and recorded four studio albums with the band — "5150" , "OU812" , "For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge" and "Balance" — all of which topped the U.S. chart. The highest-charting Roth -led VAN HALEN album was a No. 2, and it took until "1984" to achieve that. (2012's "A Different Kind Of Truth" also landed at No. 2.)

Back in October 2021, Hagar said that he had "no problem" with Roth , telling "The Mike & Carla Morning Show" on the 96.3 KKLZ radio station: "Him and I don't even have a feud. To be honest with you, I have no problem with Dave . I don't know what he's got going with me, but I think he always feels competitive. I think he feels like he has to raise his flag, like, 'I'm VAN HALEN .' 'Cause I had a solo career before VAN HALEN . I was in MONTROSE before VAN HALEN . I've had CHICKENFOOT . Dave has got VAN HALEN , so I think he has to hold on to that kind of tight. But I don't care about that. If someone said, 'Oh, I never knew you [were] in VAN HALEN ,' I'd say, 'Eh…'"

In June 2021, Hagar blasted Roth , saying his voice "hasn't aged well" and describing the original VAN HALEN singer's onstage persona as "totally bullshit." He told Brazil's "Inside With Paulo Baron" Internet show: "[ David is] a real character. He's a showman. He's all show. I enjoy him. But you talk about cringing. I can't imagine how he feels when he looks at some of them old videos, the way he was dancing and moving, and the way he was singing live sometimes. I don't know how he feels about all that, but I don't think he cares. The difference between him and I [is] I sincerely care — I care about everything I do and I care how it affects people and I care what they think. I care that it touches them and it makes them happy. And what is important to me is enlightening and elevating people spiritually and making them happy and making them have big dreams, making them want to be better themselves. And that's my goal with everything I do — is to bring that to people and change their life, if I can. I don't think he cares about anything like that. And that's the difference between our presence. He's very much into himself, very much into being a showman and doesn't really care. I don't know what he cares about; I really don't. I don't know him. I have no idea who that guy is; I don't think anyone does. But he entertains me. I enjoy watching him do stupid shit."

Asked what he thinks when he sees the way David presents himself to the public, Sammy said: "Well, the first thing I'd say is I look at him and I think, 'Wow. He's a strange person. He's a strange character.' He's not what he's saying he is; he's pretending. He's totally bullshit. Everything he does is thought up and it's an image. It's nothing to do with who he is; he's not exposing who and what he is. And I know this for a fact. I knew that the first time I saw him. I said, 'This guy, he's putting on an image, putting on a show.' He goes back home and goes in his house, and he's a whole different guy — nothing to do with that guy [you see on stage]. He's not honest about his image and his performance. That's what I see when I see him; that's how I feel. But I tried to be friends."

Referring to the time when he and Roth teamed up for the co-headlining tour in 2002, Sammy continued: "When we did our together, I thought it was gonna be so much fun. I thought, 'If he's anything like he claims to be, we're gonna have a good time.' But he wasn't. He was the worst guy to be around. He wasn't ever around. He hides out. You never see him. He puts on this whole big front and comes out, 'I'm here. David Lee Roth is here,' and then he goes and hides again. I don't think he's happy. He's never been married; never had a relationship; never had children. It's, like, man, how do you live like that? I don't know. I'm a family man. And I love women — I love women and children… He hasn't aged well — his voice. [ Laughs ] I don't know. It's hard."

According to Hagar , he has tried a number of times to be respectful to Roth , particularly because of David 's immeasurable contribution to VAN HALEN 's legacy.

"I used to not wanna cause trouble," he said. "First, in the old days, before I was in VAN HALEN , I ripped him through the fucking coals when I [did] the press, before I ever was in that band. And then when I joined the band, I tried to be nice. And then when I left the band, I tried to be nice about him. And then we did our together, and then I fucking said, 'Fuck this guy. He's an asshole. You can't get along with him. He's no fun. He's full of shit.' And then now, after [ VAN HALEN guitarist] Eddie 's [ Van Halen ] death, I feel, once again, he's part of the VAN HALEN legacy and he's important. So I wouldn't wanna ruin anything to do with what he brought to that legacy. I want VAN HALEN to go down as one of the greatest rock bands of all time — but not just my [era]; Dave 's era [as well]. I want Eddie to be the legend and get the respect that he deserves, and the only way to preserve that is by being kind about the past. And, like in my [2011's autobiography, 'Red: My Uncensored Life In Rock' ], like I said, that's the only thing I would probably [change in the book if I was writing it now is I would] soften it up [as it relates to Eddie ]. But it's too late — it is what it is. And it's honest. So I'm not lying, I'm not backpedaling — nope, nope. It's all true. But God rest his soul. He brought a lot to this planet, to this business of rock and roll, Eddie Van Halen did. And Dave was a part of it. It's too bad what he's become. [ Laughs ] But that's different. It's not VAN HALEN anymore."

In November 2020, Eddie 's son Wolfgang revealed that his father had contemplated a "kitchen-sink tour" that would have included classic-era bassist Michael Anthony , as well as vocal turns from both Hagar and Roth . There was even talk about bringing back Gary Cherone , who sang with VAN HALEN on one poorly received album, 1998's "Van Halen III" .

Eddie died in October 2020 at St. John's Hospital in Santa Monica, California. The iconic VAN HALEN axeman passed away from complications due to cancer, his son confirmed.

Since Eddie Van Halen passed away in 2020, rumors of a possible concert tribute were revealed by people involved in their camp, but according to Wolfgang Van Halan and radio host Eddie Trunk that tribute wasn’t possible especially because of David Lee Roth who couldn’t agree entirely with the idea.  Since then, the ex-Van Halen vocalist Sammy Hagar lamented that nothing was done to honor the late guitarist. As the sources revealed at the time, the guitarist who would be in that tribute would be Joe Satriani.

That tribute will now happen in a different form since Sammy Hagar announced a tour called “Best of All Worlds” featuring Joe Satriani, Michael Anthony and Jason Bonham that will perform Van Halen, Montrose and Hagar solo songs. The Canadian group Loverboy will be their opening act.

Sammy Hagar sounded ageless as he celebrated Van Halen and more in Phoenix

Portrait of Ed Masley

Sammy Hagar had just led his bandmates in “Top of the World,” the ninth Van Halen song they’d squeezed into the top half of their set on Tuesday, Aug. 20, at Talking Stick Resort Amphitheatre in Phoenix, when he took a moment to address the crowd.

“You all know why we’re here,” he said as guitar hero Joe Satriani leaned into the opening riff to “Best of Both Worlds.”

“To celebrate the music of our lives.”

It was, indeed, a full-on celebration. Drummer Jason Bonham even seamlessly slipped in a chorus of Kool & the Gang’s “Celebration” on “Best of Both Worlds.”

And for much of Tuesday’s concert, Hagar kept the focus of that celebration squarely on the music of our lives that coincided with his run as the guy who took over on vocals for David Lee Roth at the helm of Van Halen, topping Billboard's album chart for four consecutive releases.

What they played: Sammy Hagar's and Loverboy's Phoenix setlists

How Sammy Hagar found himself revisiting Van Halen after 20 years

It’s been 20 years since Hagar ended his association with Van Halen after being whisked off to the Tucson airport in his sweaty stage clothes from the final concert of their ill-fated reunion tour .

It was the last time he and bassist Michael Anthony, introduced as his “partner in crime,” would share a stage with Eddie and Alex Van Halen.

A few days prior to taking the stage in Phoenix, Hagar spoke to The Arizona Republic about how he and Anthony have come to spend their summer celebrating the music they made when Van Halen was truly on top of the world.

“We just said, "It's time to do it. We're not gonna wait any longer. It's 20 years. We ain't getting no younger. Let's go do it while we still can," he said.

“My main motive was, man, I don't know how much longer I can sing these songs. These songs are difficult to sing. I painted myself into a corner years ago singing these songs.”

'Worst show of our lives': Sammy Hagar reveals 'horrible' end to his Van Halen years in Tucson, Arizona

Sammy Hagar's vocals sounded ageless on those full-throated wails

Whatever corner Hagar may have painted himself into with the high notes on the songs he sang in Phoenix, there was nothing to suggest his voice was on the verge of giving out.

He’s still got it at 76, leaning into the full-throated wails of those high notes with conviction to burn on such crowd-pleasing highlights as “Summer Nights,” “Top of the World,” “Right Now” and “Heavy Metal,” one of five songs from his solo years that made the setlist.

He also did one song by Chickenfoot, a Hagar-fronted supergroup that also featured Anthony and Satriani, and reached back to his first recording as the voice of Montrose for “Space Station #5.”

And Satriani took a solo turn on the awe-inspiring instrumental “Satch Boogie.”

But the bulk of Tuesday’s setlist was devoted to Van Halen, including three Roth-era classics, “Panama,” “Jump” (which was part of a three-song medley with those songs by Chickenfoot and Montrose) and “Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love.”

Hagar's 'partner in crime' Michael Anthony brought his A-game on vocals

That last one featured Anthony on vocals, kicking things off with a Roth-worthy wail.

The bassist also traded lead vocals with Hagar on Van Halen’s “Judgement Day” and “Why Can’t This Be Love” in addition to dusting off the harmonies that did so much to underscore the pop hooks of their greatest hits, with keyboardist Rai Thistlethwayte adding to the vocal blend.

Anthony has been a fixture of Hagar’s solo work dating back to their days in the harmony group Los Tres Gusanos, formed in 1993 when they were both still members of Van Halen, through Sammy Hagar & the Waboritas, Planet Us, Chickenfoot and Sammy Hagar and the Circle.

This is the most Van Halen songs they’ve ever done together, though, outside the context of Van Halen. And they were clearly enjoying the opportunity to take those songs out for another spin, especially the ones they hadn’t played in more than 20 years.

When it came time for Anthony to take the spotlight on “Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love,” Hagar shouted “Mikey,” then added, “At this time in the show, for those that haven’t seen the show yet, I want to introduce my partner in crime, my beach nuts buddy, my drinkin’ pal, my Wabo rat-ass buddy, bad-ass rock ‘n’ roll bass player singin’ Michael Anthony.”

It was kinda sweet.

Joe Satriani did a great job of channeling Eddie Van Halen (and more)

Joe Satriani also has a storied history with Hagar (Planet Us, Chickenfoot) and proved to be the perfect lead guitarist for the task at hand.

He did a great job of channeling Eddie Van Halen, from his finger-tapping pyrotechnics to his whammy-bar technique, honoring the essence of the licks and solos fans have come to know and love while also stretching out in moments that were more distinctly Satriani-esque.

He even busted out a power drill for the intro to “Poundcake” in tribute to Eddie.

The phrase guitar hero is obviously overused, but Satriani more than lives up to the title. He’s a total badass on guitar, as he reminded us repeatedly without necessarily making it all about him.

Hagar also played guitar.

When it came time for “There’s Only One Way to Rock,” the only Hagar solo song they played in their first hour on stage, he told the crowd, “Now, I’m gonna go ahead and make a full of myself and play guitar with Joe Satriani in the band,” adding “I do this to make Joe look really good.”

It was a funny, self-effacing moment, of which there were several. But Hagar’s guitar work on “There’s Only One Way to Rock” was actually fantastic. He just comes from a different school of lead guitar than the one Satriani attended. Hagar tore it up, though, inadvertently suggesting that he may need to revisit the theory that there’s only one way to rock because, in terms of rocking that guitar, there’s clearly Satriani’s way and Hagar's way.

Jason Bonham definitely rose to the occasion on drums. Much like his father, Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham, he's a heavy hitter who can also groove.

And having Thistlethwayte on hand was nice, especially when it came time for the keyboard-driven majesty of “Jump.”

It wouldn't be a Sammy Hagar, of course, without his sense of showmanship. He knows exactly how to make a concert feel more like a party, and Tuesday night was no exception. He commanded the stage with his usual flair and even handed out red Solo cups full of tequila to the fans down front.

Loverboy rocked the hits, from 'Turn Me Loose' to 'Hot Girls in Love'

Loverboy opened the show with a crowd-pleasing journey through their biggest hits, from “Lovin’ Every Minute of It” and “The Kid is Hot Tonite” to the triple-shot of singalongs that brought their portion of the concert to a rousing finish – “Hot Girls in Love,” “Turn Me Loose” and “Workin’ For the Weekend.”

Mike Reno has the weirdest mic technique you’ve ever seen. The microphone is just as likely to be pointed at the signature bandana on his forehead as it is in the direction of his mouth, which led to several overheard discussions when their set was over as to whether he was lip-syncing.

The thing is, there are videos online of Loverboy performing in the ‘80s where he does the same thing. It’s just the way he works with a microphone.

He sounded great, as did his bandmates, especially lead guitarist Paul Dean, who had his tone dialed in just right to those solos really sing, and bassist Kenneth "Spider" Sinnaeve, who took a cool solo on “Hot Girls in Love.”
