Saskatoon's Enchanted Forest: A legacy of lights

Noah's Ark is one of the more popular displays at Saskatoon's Enchanted Forest, now celebrating their 25th year.

SASKATOON — It has been 25 years of sparkling lights and luminous fundraising for Saskatoon’s Enchanted Forest popular holiday attraction. Did you know that the BHP Enchanted Forest is one of Canada’s largest and longest-running Christmas Holiday Light Shows?

In an interview Hugh Vassos, Marketing Director, states, “The organizers started as the two foundations along with a couple key contributors and that structure has lasted for the past 25 years.”

Vassos says they are celebrating their 25th anniversary with the addition of three new light displays. The new additions include the BHP Christmas Around the Globe display, the tunnel of lights and the prairie portraits.

“Along with the new displays, there is an extended drive-thru display stretching to 2.5 kms.”

How has the Enchanted Forest evolved since its first year? The EF committee says the biggest evolution has been the addition of new lights displays, now including up to 75 custom-built images, as well as changing all the lights to LED making the display more energy efficient.

The popular holiday attraction in Saskatoon blends its dazzling festive displays with fundraising for the Saskatoon City Hospital Foundation and the Saskatoon Zoo Foundation, with $7M in net proceeds shared for these causes to date.

Vassos says there are several highlights they are proud of, “Being able to provide the community with an event that has become a family tradition since 1999 and was the only event available to attend during the holidays in 2020. Also the spectacular displays that stretch out through the beautiful urban forest that is the Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park.”

As with any outdoor displays in Saskatchewan during winter, the major challenge each year is the weather, as it is so unpredictable. Some attendees say this year’s brown December eliminates the snow capturing the essence of the lighting at night however it has not deterred people from coming.

A team of approximately 50 people starts set up in September and take down follows the last day of the attraction’s opening in January

Saskatoon’s Rotary Club provides an excellent partnership, taking care of managing the front gate for the event.

Sweden’s Team Hasselborg, while not on the ice competing at the Grand Slam of Curling in Saskatoon, took in the popular Saskatoon holiday attraction and posted video to their team's Instagram page, stating, “Saskatoon is a beautiful city, day and night.”

Vassos says, “We host bus tours, large and small, and attract all sorts of groups for Christmas parties. The BHP Enchanted Forest has become a source of tremendous pride for Saskatoon residents. Residents become tour guides for visiting friends and relatives over the holiday season.”

The event just doesn’t just boost Christmas spirit and the fundraising initiatives; attracting over 75,000 visitors through the gates also results in economic spinoffs for Saskatoon in the hospitality and retail industry.

Vassos says, “Over the years we have received amazing feedback particularly that this event has become part of so many people’s family holiday traditions. The event is truly for everyone and provides enjoyment to thousands as well brightens everyone’s mental well-being. “

Noah’s Ark, the fireworks, and Santa’s workshop are deemed some of the most popular displays with the light tunnels also becoming a new favourite.

Online reviews corroborate the 25th anniversary theme of the Enchanted Forest being part of a family tradition. A number of reviewers said they were introduced to the holiday spectacular as kids and are now taking their own families to be part of the magical lights display. Spending time with the family really lights up the whole holiday season, and Saskatoon’s Enchanted Forest offers this merry and bright opportunity.

A must-see Saskatoon Christmas light display is back for another year - this time with 75,000 lights

Scott and Shelly Lambie

In December, driving around the city at night often means passing various houses decorated with Christmas lights – but if you’re on Clinkskill Drive in Saskatoon, you can’t miss one house in particular.

Seven years ago, Scott and Shelly Lambie were sitting in front of the TV watching YouTube videos with their daughter. Scott says they were looking at various Christmas light displays, and his daughter said “Hey, you should do that!”

They ordered some lights and a few control boxes and began what would quickly become the Clinkskill Christmas Lights.

This year the display has 75,000 lights, compared to the 25,000 they had in their first year.

Scott said they begin putting the lights up on the roof in September before it snows. In November they begin putting up all of the other lights – which they work on almost every day.

“Usually after work for a couple hours, and put in eight-hour shifts on the weekend and keep going until it’s done,” he said.

Some of the new features this year include the lights wrapping around into a tree that’s about 60 feet high in the backyard, and a new colour pixel tree, each individual light can be programmed to be a different colour.

The couple programs the lights to sync with the FM radio channel 89.7 and people can tune in from their cars, or they can watch from the front sidewalk.

“We’ve got the radio tuned in so they can hear it (from the sidewalk),” Shelly said. “Makes it a little bit easier to get in front of the lights and watch the show.”

The display has become a staple in the city; Scott said last year, Shelly handed out around 700 candy canes – in one night.

“Our five-year-old grandson, we asked what he wanted for Christmas and it was to hand out candy canes (to the people who come to see the lights),” Shelly said.

“I grew up in Saskatoon and we always did the light tour. We didn’t have a lot of money but it was something we could always do. And it’s great to see the kids dancing up and down the sidewalk, so excited to get a candy cane – which is such a little thing.”

Scott Lambie said he’s noticed the kids always enjoy when “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch” plays during the light display, while Shelly loves them all.

The lights are on from 5:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. on weeknights and 5:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. on weekends.

The couple warns visitors driving by to be careful to not park in driveways, and to watch out for excited children who may accidentally run onto the road.

They encourage visitors to park down the street on nice nights and walk down to watch the display from the sidewalk.

There’s no shortage of creative, visually gorgeous Christmas lights displays to choose from. Read on to discover some of the very best seasonal events the region has to offer.

saskatoon light tour

CHRISTMAS GLOW SASKATOON: SANTA’S LOST PRESENTS

Set against the stunning background of a million sparkling lights — and scored to the invigorating tune of live music — the Christmas Glow Saskatoon event looks like it’s going to be something rather special this year. A musical light tunnel and the child-friendly Christmas Light Gardens are just two examples of the incredible feats being accomplished with the lights themselves, while the best of Saskatoon’s own food and craft culture will be on display at the vendor’s markets.

Best of all, there’s a licensed on-site bar for the adults to kick back while the kids make the most of the numerous playgrounds and interactive activities available.

2706 CLINSKILL CHRISTMAS DISPLAY

2706 CLINSKILL CHRISTMAS DISPLAY

A clear favourite to be included in anybody’s list of the best Christmas lights displays to be found in Saskatoon, the house at 2706 Clinskill has been making a name for itself in this niche for a number of years now. Regularly topping lists of the most impressive displays in Canada, this event’s main draw is the incredibly well-orchestrated link between the lights themselves and the radio station that operates from the same location. Everything is synchronized together, which makes for a dazzling audio-visual spectacle.

SASKATOON FORESTRY FARM PARK

THE ENCHANTED FOREST: SASKATOON FORESTRY FARM PARK

Presented jointly this year by BHP Billiton and Saskatoon Forestry Farm, the Enchanted Forest is an annual event that Canadians everywhere can look forward to since it usually makes the list of the largest Christmas lights displays in the entire country. There are tons of attractions on offer to delight the whole family, including a whole miniature street dedicated to candy (the aptly named Candy-Cane Lane), Santa and all his reindeer, and a good old-fashioned 12 Days of Christmas event too.

The event gets added to every single year, so even if you’ve been a repeat attendee over the last while, it’s worth stopping by and having a look – you never know what surprises you will see.

RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE: COLLEGE DRIVE

Occupying a corner right next to Clarence Avenue, which itself is pretty impressive when it comes to Christmas lights displays, the Ronald McDonald House goes all-out every holiday season to outdo the previous year’s efforts. Kids will love the creative twist on Christmas classics, while visitors of all ages will get a huge kick out of just how colourful the lights themselves are.

Christmas lights displays come in a lot of shapes and sizes, and in Saskatoon, this is as true as anywhere, with residential property-owners rubbing shoulders with large businesses in an effort to outdo the competition. Spread evenly as they are around the Saskatoon area, odds are there’ll be at least one or two you can get down to without much hassle — so what are you waiting for? There’s no better time than now to start planning your Christmas lights display itinerary.

Justin Timberlake set for first tour performance after his arrest

saskatoon light tour

By Marianne Garvey, CNN

(CNN) — Justin Timberlake is set to return to the stage.

The singer, who was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated in Sag Harbor, New York, on Tuesday morning, will perform as scheduled at the United Center in Chicago on Friday and Saturday.

Timberlake is appearing as part of his “Forget Tomorrow” world tour.

After visiting a local hotel restaurant and bar, Timberlake was observed around 12:37 a.m. Tuesday morning “operating his vehicle in an intoxicated condition,” according to Sag Harbor Police. He was driving a 2025 BMW when he allegedly failed to stop at a stop sign and failed to maintain in his lane of travel, police said.

Timberlake had told police he “had one martini and followed my friends home,” according to court records.

A Sag Harbor Village Police Department officer described him as “unable to divide attention,” adding “he had slowed speech, he was unsteady afoot and he performed poorly on all standardized field sobriety tests.”

Timberlake rejected a chemical test three times. He was placed under arrest and held overnight for arraignment, according to police. He was released without bail and his next court appearance is scheduled for July 26.

CNN has reached out to representatives for Timberlake for comment.

After this weekend’s shows, Timberlake is scheduled to return to New York with his tour for performances at Madison Square Garden on June 25 and 26.

Maynard's 'unexpected' sequel leads to book tour, stop in central Ohio

"How the Light Gets In" (William Morrow, $30) by Joyce Maynard, jacket painted by Daniel Thibeault.

Joyce Maynard has written 12 novels, as well as three memoirs, short stories, true crime tales and hundreds of newspaper and magazine pieces, but she's never written a sequel to a novel before.

Her new novel, “How the Light Gets In,” picks up where the 2021 bestseller, “Count the Ways,” left off.

“Count the Ways” followed heroine Eleanor through decades of her life, including a move into the countryside of New Hampshire, the beginnings of a career as an artist, a young marriage, three children, a tragic accident, a divorce, a move and much more.

“How the Light Gets In” begins in time where the previous novel left off, in 2009, with Eleanor at 54, dealing with life as the mother of adult children, changes in her life and career and a possible new romance, and follows her up through the present day.

“I thought when I had finished 'Count the Ways' that I was totally done. It was readers who suggested otherwise,” Maynard said, speaking from France, where she was visiting friends before starting her current book tour.

Series reaches an end: Columbus author spices up things in finale of mystery series

“Almost as soon as the book came out, I began to get really passionate letters from readers. Some of them were quite upset. They said, 'You can't just leave us here,'" Maynard said.

"They were also upset with my character, Eleanor, the way she always sacrificed for everyone else. It seemed important to bring her to the next stage in life, which I know something about, because I'm in it, where finally you turn around and your children are grown, and there's space to consider what we might need for ourselves.

"And then I still didn't write the sequel for about a year , because I love this character so much. I had to think really long and carefully about what I wanted her next chapter to be."

The novel is written in such a way that it can either stand on its own or as a follow-up to the earlier novel, though readers who don't want spoilers should start with the first one.

Writing it presented certain challenges, though.

“If I had known I was going to write a sequel, I would have planted some things in the first one," Maynard said.

"Whenever I write, I either have a giant white board, almost the size of my wall, or, because I was doing a lot of this in my little cabin in New Hampshire, a wall full of Post-it notes. I had to keep track of all the characters — how old they were, what was going on in their lives and the world and with each other over the course of more than 50 years.

"Most of all, I wanted to both give a realistic picture of the sorrows of the world and the sorrows of life and love, and still hold on to a sense of optimism and joy, which I really do have about my own life. I really wanted a hopeful ending. I knew it wasn't just going to be some great man coming along to gallop up on a big white horse and sweep her away. I wanted to give her some love and some passion, but I didn't want a man to be the whole answer."

Among the heartaches that Eleanor faces along the way is long-term estrangement from one of her adult children, and therefore, from her grandchildren.

Review: Solvinic's debut novel touches upon crime in a small Ohio county

“One of the things that matters to me as a writer is to talk in my stories about things we don't always get to talk about. In the last 10 years, as I have been teaching memoir writing, I have probably come to know well and hear the stories of 50 women who have a deeply loved adult child with whom they no longer speak and grandchildren they do not know," Maynard said.

"We don't hear that story; people don't talk about it, maybe because there's an enormous amount of shame and guilt around it. So many women suffer extraordinarily with that. And they suffer alone."

While Maynard will be occupied with her book tour for a while, she said she looks forward to getting back to writing afterward.

“There are two books that are very much on my mind. For the first time ever, I want to write about writing. So I'm going to write a book that I consider a hybrid: A book about my writing life and one that I also hope will be helpful to people who want to write," she said.

"And the other is a sequel to the novel 'The Bird Hotel,' which came out between these two books. When I finally land, I've given myself an entire month of absolutely no commitments but the commitment to be at my desk, and we'll see what happens.

“It may be a whole new set of characters who haven't even come alive in my head yet. Often I'm taken by surprise, and I love that.”

Maynard is to be appearing at an event sponsored by the Friends of the Delaware Library at 6 p.m. July 10 at the Dempsey Event Center, 123 Hyatts Road, Delaware.

The cost is $55, which includes a copy of the novel, a conversation between Maynard and novelist Lee Martin, book signings, wine and charcuterie, qigong, singing bowls, crafts and a tour of the herb garden.
