scenic tours of tasmania

Day 1 Welcome to Hobart

Tour Melbourne Image

The Tasmanian capital of Hobart may be small in size, but it’s big in attractions, as you’ll discover this afternoon. Put your destination into perspective from the summit of Mt. Nelson, offering endless vistas over Australia’s southernmost city. View the charming Georgian cottages of Battery Point and convict built warehouses along Salamanca Place, the backdrop of epic Saturday markets. Gaze over boats at Constitution Dock - this is where yachts finish when competing in the annual Sydney to Hobart race, and take a stroll in the second oldest Botanical Gardens in Australia with its amazing collection of plants from around the world. Tonight, join your Travel Director for a Welcome Dinner.

Day 2 Hobart - Strahan

Western Tasmania is like nature amplified, a place where the wilderness rules and people are few and far between. Visiting Mount Field National Park is a humbling experience, not only for the fact it’s part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, but also because it’s home to some of the tallest eucalypts and flowering plants on Earth. Wander amid these giants to reach Russell Falls – take a deep breath; you’re officially on holiday. Records continue to be broken at Lake St. Clair, the deepest freshwater Lake in Australia, before you arrive in Strahan, gateway to World Heritage listed Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park.

Day 3 Strahan

The inky waters of the Gordon River and Macquarie Harbour – given their colour by amber button-grass tannins – are as eery as they are beautiful, the mirror-like surface only broken by your Gordon River chariot as you cruise through Hells Gates, the treacherous entrance to the harbour before returning to Sarah Island. It’s hard to reconcile the beauty of this part of the state with its grim history as a penal colony; a place where convicts would fell Huon pines for boat building. Disembark at Heritage Landing to view one of these 500-year-old majestic trees. Safely back on dry land, it's soon time to discover 'The Ship That Never Was', the dramatic and hilarious true story of the Great Escape from Sarah Island! You'll see it performed live by a group of theatre professionals.

Day 4 Strahan - Cradle Mountain - Burnie

Today your journey reaches new heights – quite literally with a visit to the 1,545-metre Cradle Mountain, your backdrop as you explore Dove Lake on your Cradle Mountain tour, the wild alpine moorlands here a natural magnet for lovers of the wilderness. The spectacular and pristine wilderness of Cradle Mountain is home to the mysterious and secretive Tasmanian Devil. You’ll love the next adventure today, a MAKE TRAVEL MATTER® Experience. A Day Keeper at Devils @ Cradle will lead you through the sanctuary and provide you with a thorough insight into its operation. When joining this tour you will be directly supporting these animals and threatened species conservation. Leave the Central Highlands after an uplifting day and head towards the scenic north-west coast for your overnight stay.

Day 5 Burnie - Launceston

Table Cape is by far Wynyard's most remarkable natural wonder, at 180 metres high, 'The Cape' - as locals refer to it - offers spectacular views of Tasmania's coastline. As you drive to the top of the remains of a 12-million-year-old volcano you'll reach Table Cape lookout where, on a clear day, you can see mountain ranges over 175 kilometres away. If there’s a town with a cuter name than Penguin, we’re yet to find it. Locals embrace its appeal – there are penguin sculptures at every turn, including one measuring over 3 metres tall. Your journey along the northwest coast also passes through Ulverstone and Sheffield, The Town of Murals, boasting over 100 large paintings depicting the area’s rich history and local characters. All this exploring builds an appetite. Refuel at Ashgrove Tasmanian Farm, where happy cows contribute to award-winning cheeses – everything from cheddar and red Leicester to creamy Tasmanian blue. For lovers of sweeter delights, why not treat yourself to a delicious locally made ice cream?

Day 6 Launceston

There are few places in the world where you can leave the city behind and within minutes be surrounded by nature. Launceston is one. Blink and you’re at Cataract Gorge, a yawning chasm carved by ancient rivers. This rare natural phenomenon unites bushland with neat Victorian gardens, replete with ferns and exotic plants. Get a different perspective of the green cavern on the optional scenic chairlift, zipping you over the water to a lofty lookout. We wouldn’t blame you for lingering here, or perhaps taking a cruise along the river. The choice is yours.

Day 7 Launceston - Bicheno

You’ll smell Bridestowe before you see it, this enormous lavender farm perfuming the Tasmanian countryside. The flowers grown here aren’t just used in fragrances – they’re also infused into ice-cream, teas and jams. It’s a tasty entrée to the Legerwood Carved Memorial Trees, sculpted into World War One soldiers. Little penguins come out to play in Bicheno; sign up to spot them after dark as they waddle to shore from the water.

Day 8 Bicheno - Hobart

The colours at Freycinet National Park are so vivid you’ll think someone has taken the glasses off your nose and cleaned them for the first time: The patchwork of ocean blues that lap Coles Bay. The dramatic pink granite cliffs. There’s a reason why the peninsula stars on postcards. The other place on postcards is Richmond, its grand 1820s Georgian buildings today home to bijou boutiques, galleries and cafés that appear to be lost in time. Your last stop for the day is to the shores of the Derwent River where local palawa will welcome you to country and show off some local bush tucker.

Day 9 Port Arthur Historic Site

The Isle of the Dead, Devil’s Kitchen, Blowhole… the attractions at and around Port Arthur nod to the region’s notoriously grim history. This is the best-preserved convict site in Australia, and among the most significant convict-era destinations worldwide. The stories these walls could tell.

Day 10 Farewell from Hobart

It took early explorers months to circumnavigate Tasmania. You’ve done it in 10 days. What a wild ride.

Please note: This itinerary may be subject to change.

Explorer Six - 6 Day Tour of Tasmania

The tour was fantastic. Covered a wide variety of locations in Tasmania with a good range of walks and other activities for all abilities. The tour guides (Keygan and Misty) were both amazing. Very knowledgeable, fun and always ready to help. It was made clear to us the best options for food and stops to get groceries were planned in to the trip. I would highly recommend the tour and look forward to return go Tas as a result of having been on it.

Great trip. The 3 drivers in Coles Bay where we were stuck because of the fires were outstanding.!!!!!!!!

Trek the Cradle Mountain Overland Track

Sure it would have been radical to do the hike independently; cheaper yet more daunting, lonely, and stressful and ultimately I would've kept procrastinating and never reached my goal of hiking Cradle Mountain. By booking a tour it made me accountable and I achieved my goal and it feels great!

The BIG 3 Tasmania - Hobart to Launceston

I enjoyed having Audrey as my guide from Hobart to Wineglass Bay. Whereas Graeme, my guide from Wineglass Bay to Launceston is very impatient with his driving. Although Graeme is very knowledgeable, some times he is hard to approach.

Tassie\'s East Coast Highlights (5 Days) Tour

Tassie's East Coast Highlights (5 Days)

The tour was great due to the efforts of our bus driver, Tom, and Gary out tour leader/commentator. I felt that it was a bit misleading that the tour said 5 days when it was in fact only 4 days with a drink the night before. The content of the trip was great and I will be back to do the East Coast highlights. Loved Launceston, Bicheno, Freycinet National Park and Wineglass Bay. Not so keen on Port Arthur but I guess it's a must see.

What people love about tasmania tours.

This tour was absolutely fantastic. We were able to squeeze in and see so much of Tasmania’s natural beauty! Our tour guide Hayden was amazing - cool, calm and knowledgeable! I was overjoyed when he helped us spot some platypus in their natural environment. Whilst on the bus itself he shared heaps of information and fun facts to keep us entertained. There is a lot of early starts - which is totally fair enough since it meant we could enjoy so much of what Tasmania has to offer. There is a lot of walking - but there are many choices of walks to do, so you can chose the level of difficulty in most places and all walks are optional. One of my favourite trips in Australia so far ?
Excellent Larry our guide took very good care of us. Did his best to ensure we all were ok and happy
The three day tour was well organised and everything worked as promised. The only issue was that day three was overloaded not allowing enough time at the Unzoo and Port Arthur, the final visit to Richmond was unnecessary the time would have been spent at the visits earlier in the day. Overall the tour represented value for money and allowed me to see the highlights of Tasmania in a planned and stress free way. .

After being ravaged by fire in 2019 this attraction has been re-developed and is now back to its beautiful best, showcasing the pristine rivers & tranquil native forests which include some specimens of Tasmania’s most famous tree - Huon Pine.

The Tahune Airwalk itself is an elevated walkway 30 meters above the forest floor, with the final cantilever section sitting at a height of 50 meters above the Huon River. It boasts spectacular  views to the confluence of the Huon & Picton Rivers and beyond to the peaks of the World Heritage Area in Tasmania’s south-west.

scenic tours of tasmania

A further walk takes us deeper into the forest and offers a unique experience crossing both the Huon & Picton Rivers on swinging bridges nearly 100m meters long. Feel the rush of the water beneath your feet and take in the views & crisp air coming from up stream.

Stop at the Geeveston Timber Museum to learn the story of the early settlers harvesting timber from this area. There are many great old artefact and items of equipment on display. Finally on our return journey to Hobart we visit the famous Willie Smith’s Apple Shed with the opportunity for an afternoon snack or refreshment - we recommend trying the apple cider made from apples grown in the surrounding orchards.

Enjoy another relaxing evening at the Movenpick Hotel. Being Friday there are plenty of opportunities for night time entertainment and many great Hobart city restaurants & venues close by.

Reaching heights of up to 30 metres, these vast dunes are a desert amid Tasmania’s dense rainforests. Then venture into the Tarkine region. Nestled in the largest tract of temperate rainforest in Australia, the Tarkine is alive with unique creatures and habitats not found anywhere else on earth, and home to vast forests of myrtle, leatherwood and pine trees – living links to Gondwanaland that it shared with Patagonia and New Zealand millennia ago. Take a guided walk among its pristine rainforest and discover Tasmania's highest waterfall encased in a lush fern forest and rocky cliffs. Afterwards, return to Strahan and head to Ocean Beach to inhale some of the freshest air in the world.

  • Strahan - Henty Dunes & Ocean Beach
  • Tarkine - Rainforest Hike to Montezuma Falls

The driving distance today is approximately 150 kilometres (around 2.5 hours). Today's hike will take approximately 3 hours.

Depart from Strahan this morning and head to the magnificent wilderness of Cradle Mountain National Park. The mountain, at 1545m high, is one of the park’s iconic features and is surrounded by stands of native deciduous beech, rainforest, alpine heath lands and button grass. Icy streams cascade down the mountainsides and ancient pines are reflected in the still glacial lakes. Explore the park along a number of different guided or self-guided walking tracks. If you prefer to travel at a leisurely pace, consider taking a walk to Waldheim Chalet or wandering along the Dove Lake circuit. For those with a little more grit, or people who simply love views of gorgeous lakes with rugged mountain backdrops, the hike to Marion’s Lookout is perfect. Your leader is at hand to explain options. Later today, travel to Launceston via Sheffield, the town of murals.

  • Hotel (1 night)
  • Cradle Mountain National Park - Cradle Mountain Walks & Hikes
  • Sheffield - Town Stopover

The driving distance today is approximately 300 kilometres (around 3.5 hours).

Today's hiking will depend on which walking path you have chosen, please ask your leader for estimates. To best enjoy your time at Cradle Mountain please keep in mind that sudden changes in weather may occur at any time in Tasmania. Always carry additional warm clothing, including a waterproof outer layer.

Departing Launceston head for the peaceful north east corner of Tasmania. The Bay of Fires is remarkable for its beauty, wildlife and cultural history with long stretches of dazzling white beaches, shimmering turquoise waters, coastal heath and woodlands that abound with wildlife, and of course the orange coloured granite rocks. Explore the beach of Cosy Corner, then continue late in the day to Bicheno.

For those seeking a challenge, try the climb to the summit of Mt Amos or join your leader for the walk to Wineglass Bay, voted one of the world’s top 10 beaches. There are other free walking choices available, including the path up to Cape Tourville Lighthouse, where you can enjoy panoramic vistas across the coast. Afterwards, head back to Bicheno. This evening, there’s an optional guided tour for a closer look at the life of the area’s Little Penguins as they return nightly to their rookeries to feed their young.

  • Freycinet National Park - Hike to Wineglass Bay
  • Bicheno - Bicheno Penguin Tour - from - AUD74

The driving distance today is approximately 80 kilometres (around 1.5 hours). Today's hike will take approximately 3 hours.

If you are interested in doing the guided penguin tour tonight, please book directly through the operator's website: bichenopenguintours.com.au. Please note that this activity can sell out far in advance, so it is recommended you make a booking well ahead of time.

Head to a sanctuary for a chance to see some of Tasmania’s native wildlife up close, including the famous Tasmanian devils (they’re not as fiendish as they sound!). The sanctuary is dedicated to the rehabilitation and conservation of Tasmania’s wildlife, and quolls, bandicoots, bettongs and potoroos are also bred here before being reintroduced into the wild. The sanctuary also takes in injured animals to rehabilitate or rehome. After your visit, travel further south along the scenic Great Eastern Drive, passing through the coastal towns of Swansea and Orford, before stopping in the historic village of Richmond in time for lunch. Back in Hobart visit Mount Wellington Park to savour some magnificent views over the city and its surrounding mountains, forests and waterways. We'll hit one of the many walking tracks for a relatively short and moderate walk within this stunning park (weather permitting) before returning to the city centre and bidding farewell to your travel companions and your incredible adventure.

  • Hobart - Mount Wellington Hike
  • Richmond - Town Stopover
  • Bicheno - Tasmanian Devil Wildlife Sanctuary

The driving distance today is approximately 200 kilometres (around 3 hours). Today's hike will take around 1-2 hours.
