shegaon famous places to visit

The beautiful Anand Sagar complex in Shegaon was developed by the Shri Gajanan Maharaj Mandir Trust on 350 acres of land. Meant to be both a spiritual and recreational haven, Anand Sagar is an impeccably-maintained and stunning complex drawing thousands of devotees from across the country. Home to the revered Saint, Shri Gajanan Maharaj, Anand Sagar is a must-visit for spiritual solace and the chance to find peace in its pristine environment.

The Story Behind Anand Sagar

anand sagar shegaon

Shegaon is a town located in Maharashtra on the central rail line from Mumbai to Nagpur. Situated in the Buldana district of Maharashtra, the town is sacred for devotees of Gajanan Maharaj, one of the saints of the modern era. Although his origins remain mostly unknown, the Saint was first seen in Shegaon in 1878, eating leftover grains of rice thrown out as waste on a plate of leaves.

Gajanan Maharaj was a guru belonging to the Dattatreya tradition. Considered an incarnation of Lord Dattatreya and Lord Ganesha, he first appeared in Shegaon in February 1878. Shegaon became home to the Saint and a place that saw him performing several miracles – bringing a person called Janrao Deshmukh back to life, filling dry wells with water, lighting clay-pipes without fire, curing a man’s leprosy to name a few. It’s no wonder why Shri Gajanan Maharaj is considered a saint with miraculous powers by the Hindus. Gajanan Maharaj took Samadhi on 8 September 1910, a date marked as Samadhi-din by his disciples.

One of the first things that stands out on a visit to Anand Sagar is its pristine and expansive lake. It is a stunning reservoir built out of necessity by the Shri Gajanan Maharaj Mandir Trust to solve issues of water scarcity in Shegaon and the surrounding area. The artificial lake was created by transporting water from Man River, located 9 km from Shegaon, into the Anand Sagar Lake. The project reportedly came at an enormous financial cost for the Trust; however, they persevered, and water tables increased in the surrounding areas of Shegaon.

The Shree Sansthan went several steps further and decided to develop this lake and surrounding areas into a center for spirituality and entertainment for all its devotees. The nominal revenue from the temple complex and recreational centers were channeled back into ensuring the Anand Sagar lake survived and thrived. This was how the Anand Sagar complex as pilgrims know it today came into existence.

A Snapshot of Experiences at Anand Sagar

Walks to Remember

With a sprawling area of 350 acres, it is best to reach Anand Sagar as early as 9 am. If you would like to take in all the sights, it’s best to get an early start since the walk around will easily take up an entire day. Anand Sagar makes for a good weekend trip. It can be completed in two days if you live in Maharashtra.

The Anand Sagar premises contain sights such as a temple, a meditation center, an open theatre, fountains, etc. Its most famous attraction is a lively amusement park with a toy train that circles the complex. The complex provides several amenities for its devotees, such as free wheelchairs, umbrellas, and baby prams.

Musical Fountain Shows

Anand Sagar hosts a few laser and fountain shows in the evening that are immensely popular! The last show at 8 pm is gorgeous and supposed to be the best one.

Lush Greenery and Lawns

Anand Sagar is an excellent destination for families looking for a day out. It is home to around 50,000 trees of varying types. The park’s playgrounds are well-maintained and beloved by children tagging along with their family. Some playground fun for the kids, while the parents embark on a spiritual journey – it’s a win-win for everyone. The little ones will also enjoy the fantastic aquarium located inside the area.

Its beautifully-maintained lawns and gardens are a stunning sight for city folks weary of seeing concrete every day! The complex has also been known to provide pillows and a chatai for people to rest – perfect for a quick afternoon snooze before heading out to explore further.

Food for the Soul

All the exploring and walking around can work up an appetite! And luckily for visitors, Anand Sagar helps with that as well. You can find delicious local delicacies such as the famous Shegaon Kachori and Mava Kulfi here. For those who like to stick to the classics, servings of poha, dhokla, and samosa are abundantly available. But there’s nothing like a good plate of daal-chawal to curb hunger pangs – and the one at Anand Sagar is not only delicious but priced very reasonably as well. Visitors who prefer packing food from home should ensure they only carry vegetarian food inside the complex.

Around Anand Sagar

First Sights

As soon as you pass through the gates, you are greeted by a large copper figure of Lord Ganesh created by fusing numerous lotas together.

Merry fountains welcome you inside the abode of the Saint. His presence is embedded into all aspects of Anand Sagar – in its serenity, architecture, and statues paying tribute to him as well as numerous other saints.

Signs will guide you on your walk around Anand Sagar. Pay your respects at the Ganesh Temple and walk by the lush green lawns that are a sight for sore eyes.

The Shiva Temple at Anand Sagar contains beautiful carvings reminiscent of ancient engravings you’d find in a Shiv temple somewhere in a forest. Its beauty accentuated by colorful flowers swaying in the breeze and greenery around.

A Moment of Quiet and Contemplation

In the heart of Anand Sagar is an artificial island that houses the ‘Dhyan Kendra’ or Meditation Centre. On top is an imposing statue of Swami Vivekananda, and below lies a meditation hall. Children are not allowed inside the meditation center. For those who have visited Kanyakumari, the site will remind you of the Swami Vivekananda Centre located there. Make the journey to Dhyan Kendra even more memorable with boat rides that can ferry you on your spiritual voyage. After a quiet commune with yourself and the universe, take a moment to appreciate the stunning views of Anand Sagar and the lake from the island.

Entertainment

Toy Train Anand Sagar

The Fish Aquarium is a popular attraction in Anand Sagar, especially with the children. The delightful toy train ride around the complex is a must-do when in Anand Sagar. It’s best to get there as soon as possible since queues for the ride can get long and exhausting.

Head to the Open Theatre Musical Fountain in the evening. The show usually begins around 6:45 pm and goes on to 7 pm. Sink into the green lawns of the massive open-air theatre – a well-deserved rest after all the walking – and enjoy the dancing colors of the fountain’s waters.

Things to Keep in Mind

  • Shegaon and Anand Sagar can get immensely crowded during weekends. A good way to enjoy a peaceful darshan is visiting on odd days – Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Fridays. Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays draw the most crowds.
  • Taking a train is the best way to reach Shegaon. Several buses ply from Shegaon Station to the Temple. You could choose to take a free bus service organized by the Sansthan or hire an auto for Rs 10 per seat.

  • The dining facilities offered by the Sanstha are your best bets for quality food at economical rates.

Complete Shergaon Travel Guide 2024 – A Peek Into this Quaint Village of Arunachal

Imagine flipping through a fairytale and the story jumping to life ( Jumanji style but less violent ). Lazy brooks running amidst glistening pebbles, across fruiting trees in a sleepy town – That’s Shergaon (local name – Seinthuk) for you – quaint, breathtaking, and underrated.

shergaon

Towards the tail end of my trip to Arunachal , while returning to Guwahati from Dirang, we decided to break for a night in the lovely village of Shergaon. I had never even heard this name before (but in my defense, I hadn’t known much about Arunachal in the first place).

I have never been good with planning and research and hence it was a good thing my trip itinerary was tackled by HolidayScout .

Sadly, our plans to spend the night in Shergaon got canceled due to a single covid case in the small sleepy town. The entire town consists of just 3000 residents so this pretty much shut it down for tourists. I wasn’t so disheartened by this news at that point since I didn’t know what to expect (but in my head it was still a better bet than spending a night in Guwahati).

As soon as we saw the sign that said, “Welcome to Shergaon” , with lovely scenery on either side of the road, we already had a fair idea of what we were going to be missing.

shergaon arunachal

Still, we had an entire day to spend in Shergaon and enjoyed it to the fullest. A couple of nights could’ve easily been spent, enjoying the slow pace of Arunachali village life but then, there always needs to be a reason to come back.

What to Expect While Visiting Shergaon, Arunachal

Going in with zero expectations pushed this destination to one of my favorites in Arunachal Pradesh. It is offbeat, unique, and very close to nature – just what this outdoorsy girl loves. So, without further ado, here are some photos and places to compel you to visit Shergaon –

Zengbu Gompa

zengbu gompa

Lighting a candle at the Zengbu Gompa was different from every other monastery visit in Arunachal for me. I am not sure if it was the jitters of leaving this beautiful state that overwhelmed me, the fact that this was the last monastery I would visit (for a while perhaps), or the fact that Zengbu Gompa was simply adorable!

Knowing me, it was perhaps the last one.

As soon as we parked our Duster at the Gompa and rubbed our sleepy eyes from the long winding drive from Dirang; we were instantly refreshed. We squealed with joy at the sight of this pretty monastery (the ladies only of course)!

Instantly I asked Priyanka ( of DesiGirlTraveller fame ) to take a few photos of me in front of the monastery.

zengbu gompa shergaon

It seemed abandoned at first but then we found a caretaker in a house nearby. We asked her to open the door of Zengbu Gompa so we could take a look inside and light a candle. From the inside it was even better – the sudden calm which flows through your veins when you enter a sacred place was intensified here. Since it was small, colorful, adorable and amidst nature, it was an instant winner for me!

Definitely a must-stop on your trip to Shergaon!

Choskorong Waterfall

Choskorong waterfall arunachal

Next stop, Sange of Holiday Scout told me, was a waterfall. Okay by now, I was wide awake, holding my camera in ready position and looking excitedly out the window. The tiredness of the last 8 days across Arunachal could wait till I was in Guwahati (or back to Delhi), but Shergaon deserved to be explored with complete enthusiasm .

We were told there will be a mini trek to the Choskorong waterfall (which is one of the top Shergaon attractions) and as soon as we were on this rugged path, Priyanka and I started taking photos and videos in full happy spirits. It felt like we were exploring the highlight of Arunachal, at the very end.

trek to Choskorong

How strange to feel this way after visiting top attractions of Arunachal like Tawang ! Even I was amazed we were so peppy about the thought of hiking to a waterfall – but it was what it was! Shergaon made us all happy – I would say this town and Dirang were my happy spots in Arunachal when the tourist traps clearly failed to lure me in.

We crossed what seemed like a few abandoned cottages and a stream constantly running to our left (apparently leading up to the fall).

houses shergaon

Soon we arrived at apple orchids and wait for it – Persimmon trees! They were soooo pretty, we had to stop and just stare in awe for several minutes.

Persimmon trees

During this trip, I tried the Persimmon fruit for the first time and instantly loved it. Now, I also got to see the trees and the leaf colors were absolutely stunning. For the millionth time, I requested Sange to remind me to buy some for my friends and family to try back home. By the way, if we fast forward this story a few days, they all loved it too!

The path started becoming narrower and trickier after the first ten mins of frolicking around the woods. I actually had to watch every step and hold on to nearby branches for support in several spots.

Choskorong waterfall trek

But soon enough we were rewarded by the sound of gushing water and lo behold – we were finally at Choskorong waterfall .

Camping in Shergaon

camping in shergaon arunachal

Camping is surely one of the best ways to enjoy Shergaon! HolidayScount can arrange amazing camping opportunities in plains or pretty valleys of this village. They have partnered with locals everywhere to ensure tourism in NE benefits the grass root levels.

Camping is a really good way to ensure you are amidst nature and can enjoy evening bonfires, meet other fellow travelers and just walk around this chalet-style village at your own leisurely pace.

camping in arunachal

If you are in Shergaon, I would highly recommend camping for at least 1-2 nights to get a good flavor of the place. We visited in first week of Nov and the weather was excellent for camping – so try to get there in warmer months to avoid cold/ rains.

Sherdukpen people

Even though we didn’t meet any local Sherdukpen people , this tribe is surely worth a mention here. They are primarily found in Shergaon so even their name is derived from Sher (from the village of Shergaon) and Tukpen (old name of the village of Rupa). They live in mountains and co-exist well with neighboring tribes of Monpas and Brokpas.

Pro Tips – If you visit Shergaon during a festival you can see them all dressed up in their local tribal attire and that can be feast for sore eyes. I also heard there is a Shergaon Rhododendron festival that takes place in Spring around mid-March when the flowers are in full bloom.

Shergaon Map

Guwahati to Shergaon distance is over 6.5 hours and when we were traveling back, it took us at least 7.5 hours. So I would recommend to just factor in a stop on your way back to or from Bomdila or Dirang (it’s a 1.5 to 2.5 hour travel time respectively from each of those stops).

Where to Stay in Shergaon

If you search for Shergaon hotels , you will probably be disappointed. Small villages in Arunachal often have amazing homestays and that’s the BEST way to explore North East. That way you mingle with locals, enjoy local cuisines and culture, all this while encouraging employment and entrepreneurship in a developing state. So ensure you book one of the many small homestays with HolidayScout or simply camp in nature.

Shergaon Travel Vlog

Here’s an excellent recount of our visit to Shergaon by Priyanka – Check it out and see if you can spot yours truly as well? 🙂

I didn’t even realize there were so many fun things to do in Shergaon until I spent the day there. And now, all I am craving is to go back and get my fill of a weekend in Shergaon because this town deserves at least that (if not more)!

Aerial view of Florence from Piazza Michelangelo

Renowned for its rich history and stunning architecture, Florence is a must-visit destination for art enthusiasts and history buffs alike. From Michelangelo’s David and the Duomo , one of the largest churches in the world with its famous Brunelleschi-designed dome, to fashion museums from Gucci and Ferragamo and fabulous Tuscan food (including gelato), Florence offers endless opportunities for exploration and discovery.

Michelangelo's David in Galleria dell'Accademia, Florence, Italy

After seeing the famous Duomo (free to enter), preferably early before the crowds descend, head to see Michelangelo’s David in the Accademia , 17 feet high and made from a single block of marble. And don’t miss the museum’s other considerable Renaissance treasures by Sandro Botticelli, Domenico Ghirlandaio and Filippino Lippi. It’s best to use a tour company for tickets as the queues are madness. A good one is Get Your Guide where you go in an organised, timed queue with a guide who also offers interesting commentary.

Anselm Kiefer's "Falled Angels" at Palazzo Strozzi in Florence, Italy.

For contemporary art, Palazzo Strozzi is a must. The current show, Fallen Angels, is a tremendous exhibition in every meaning of the word (the works are massive) by Anselm Kiefer. The Renaissance architecture of Palazzo Strozzi provides an excellent backdrop for new and historical works by the German artist, including a new commission created for the palace’s internal courtyard, free for everyone to view. And if you’re at the Strozzi, do see the painting exhibition nearby at Hotel Savoy. Abstract Perspectives: Annya Sand’s Tribute To Women runs until 20 May 2024 in the hotel’s public spaces.

The Giunti Odeon Libreria e Cinema in Florence, Italy.

For a break to contemplate the range of art and history that surrounds you in Florence, another beautiful historic building in the center offers respite. The Odeon cinema bookshop is in a Renaissance palace has a bookshop downstairs and 200 plush armchairs in the mezzanine gallery above to relax in. There’s also a big screen showing free films in the afternoon.

One section of the handbag room at the Gucci museum, Florence

Don’t be mislead by the name as Gucci Garden Museum is actually inside the 14th-century Palazzo della Mercanzia on the lovely Piazza Signoria. The newly designed interior features a store with one-of-a-kind items, a restaurant and the Gucci Garden Galleria exhibition rooms upstairs that draw on Gucci’s extensive archives including old advertising campaigns, artisans’ images, objects and garments. Expect to be wowed by the beautifully displayed vintage dresses, shoes and luggage. There’s even one incredible room with just handbags. A petite, red-velvet tented cinema auditorium, shows artist films with the general theme of beauty.

Ferragamo Museum, Florence

For a deep dive into the life and work of Tuscan fashion designer Salvatore Ferragamo, Museo Ferragamo provides a fascinating look at the incredible rise of a designer who came from extremely humble roots to become shoemaker to the stars. The exhibition details his early life and immigration to America, his first store in Hollywood in 1923 and his return to Florence where everything is made today. Ferragamo’s creations are presented not only to highlight their value as works of art but to show their creator’s skills as an entrepreneur and innovator, his passion for color and knowledge of the anatomy of the human skeleton and specifically the foot. The exhibition shows his exploration of new materials and the many sources of inspiration from the art world and ancient and contemporary culture.

View of the Tuscan hills just outside of Florence at Podere Castellare

For an afternoon excursion or even a stay, just outside of Florence, head to the glorious Tuscan hills to visit Podere Castellare , an agriturismo with 12 boutique guest rooms, restaurant and a pool. The Podere also houses a micro gin distillery, Peter in Florence which offers daily tours. Peter in Florence is a London dry gin, created where the world's best juniper grows. The gin is a carefully crafted blend of 14 botanicals, including the Iris flower, a symbol of the city of Florence. Book a distillery tour to see how the gin is distilled in a modern designed version of the classic 1831 Carter Head still, using 100% natural botanicals and ingredients.

Peter of Florence Gin Distillery at Podere Castellare

The tour includes a stroll through the gardens to see the botanicals used in the gin, mostly all grown on site, followed by a tasting of the various gins including London Dry, a stronger Navy gin, a limited edition that includes chamomile and saffron, and bottled negroni and martini cocktails. Peter in Tuscany gin is only a few years old but is already served in all fine bars and restaurants in Florence and just won best gin of the year in the global Bartender Spirits Awards .

Eat and Drink

Part of the tasting menu at Nugolo, Florence

It’s no surprise that Nugolo was featured in Stanley Tucci’s CNN series, Searching for Italy because what a delight it is, from its rustic Tuscan farmhouse decor and design with an open-view kitchen, to the stellar menu. The restaurant was founded by Nerina Martinelli, who is keen to preserve the different varieties of produce that are slowly disappearing. Her creative young chefs use seasonal and local ingredients to create imaginative dishes like Agnolotti di ossobuco and Fusilloni infused with black tea from juniper and rabbit ragu. Tasting menus are excellent and good value at 60 euros for five courses or 80 euros for seven.

Il Paglio, Four Seasons Florence

For the ultimate Florentine fine dining experience, Il Palagio at Four Seasons Hotel is incredible in both its setting, on the ground floor of the Palazzo della Gherardesca, surrounded by extensive mature garden and its gourmet menu. The Michelin-starred restaurant offers a la carte or a five or eight course tasting menu. The cuisine focuses on Italian culinary traditions reinterpreted by chef Paolo Lavezzini, who describes himself as “Italian by heart and Brazilian by soul” (he spent many years working in Brazil). Although born in the region of Emilia, Lavezzini’s dishes are Tuscan focused with the occasional Brazilian influence. Highlights include red potato gnocci with seafood, grilled lobster glazed with hazelnuts and cockerel agnolotti with mushrooms. Vegetarians are also well catered for, with their own tasting menu.

Irene at Hotel Savoy features a satisfying mediterranean menu with delicious pasta dishes including long rectangular lasagna. Best known for his two Michelin-starred restaurant Gambero Rosso in San Vincenzo, Fulvio Pierangelini has worked with head chef Giovanni Cosmai and Florence’s best, local suppliers to create a menu based on the Tuscan classics.

For a casual breakfast, lunch or dinner, the bistro Ditta Artigianale is a top choice. Founded in 2013 by Patrick Hoffer and Francesco Sanapo, world-renowned barista and coffee taster champion, the bistro is now in four locations. Satisfying and filling, the menu includes hearty choices like club sandwich, caesar salad and croque monsieur. They also have incredible pastries and breads provided by their onsite bakery. Try the square tiramisu croissant with one of the best cups of coffee in the city.

Meze at the Calimala

Mezè at Calimala hotel. Mediterranean cuisine blends with typical Tuscan flavors, Sea fish Sashimi, Homemade Bread and house dips Tzatziki sauce, confit garlic and 12 year balsamic from Madona, spicy red pepper spread, green pepper and spicy herb spread, reduced yogurt balls with salt in olive oil, burnt eggplant cream Steak on a skewer 20 Premium meat skewer with shallots cooked in whiskey, Beef tartare

Angel Bar at the Calimala

Angel Roofbar on the rooftop of the Hotel Calimala is spread over four terraces and is one of the city’s most popular bars. It also serves as a breakfast area for hotel guests.

Loggia Roof Bar , overlooking Piazza Santo Spirito square in Hotel Palazzo Guadagni, offers expansive views of the city and its surrounding hills and is the ideal place for an aperitivo.

Rifrullo , in the funky San Niccolò area on other side of the river, has been going since 1917. Located in the neighborhood historically known for artists and creative thinkers, Rifrullo Firenze is a great place for cocktails or coffee.

Also in the San Niccolò area is the excellent Zeb , run by the same family since 1985. Sit at the counter and enjoy delicious Tuscan food and fantastic handmade pasta, carefully prepared by Alberto and his small team. After dining, take a stroll to the lovely rose garden a few streets above, with views of the Arno river.

Mercato Centrale, Florence

Dating back to the nineteenth century and open daily from 9 a.m. to 12:00 a.m. Mercato Centrale is a huge fresh food market over two floors, frequented by both locals and tourists, with plenty of tasty Italian dining options too.

It is said that the first in the world to produce real ice cream were the Florentines in the 16th century. Gelato Badiani isn’t that old but it’s been serving some of the city’s best gelato since 1932.

Where to Stay

A suite at Calimala, Florence

Hotel Calimala , a hip four star that opened recently in the center of the old town, is arranged over two historic buildings. Accommodation includes 38 rooms in the east building and 65 in the west of which 4 are suites. The rooms are spacious and comfortable, with high ceilings and some have balconies. Decor is contemporary: exposed stone and tricolor terrazzo floors, modern furnishings and marble finishes. A double room starts from 300 euros in low season, 450€ in high season.

Hotel Savoy façade, Florence

Hotel Savoy a five star Roccoforte property, was designed by Olga Polizzi and Laudomia Pucci (daughter of legendary fashion designer Emilio). There are 80 elegant rooms, including 30 suites, some with balconies, each with chic carrara marble and mosaic bathrooms. The excellent Irene restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Another luxury choice in the historic center, is Hotel Helvetia and Bristol , part of the Starhotels group. Since the late 19th century, this sumptuous hotel, with 64 bedrooms and suites, has been offering travelers refined accommodation and excellent service.

Cancun without the crowds: Meet Isla Mujeres, a quieter Mexican getaway

The water surrounding Isla Mujeres is a vivid blue.

As soon as I arrived at Isla Mujeres, I knew I was going to experience a completely different side of Cancun.

With turquoise-blue waters, soft sand beaches and ancient Mayan ruins, Cancun is one of the top travel destinations for Americans seeking out a tropical getaway. Located on the Yucatán Penisula, the city drew 30 million visitors in 2022. It’s an easy place to visit and offers visitors the most hotels in the country .

A gorgeous beach locale? Definitely. Peaceful? Not exactly.

But looking out to the bright blue horizon, you’ll see the secluded haven I’m going to instead: Impression Isla Mujeres by Secrets .

Those looking to escape the loud parties and crowds of Cancun but still bask in the Yucatan’s natural beauty should consider Isla Mujeres, a small island 8 miles northeast of Cancun. In 2022, Isla Mujeres saw only 20% of Cancun’s tourist numbers , which makes it a more serene beach vacation.

Learn more: Best travel insurance

Impression Isla Mujeres by Secrets is a newly opened all-inclusive luxury resort that caters to a quieter Mexican getaway. A personal butler, four levels of infinity pools and even private boat transfers to and from Cancun are just a few of the amenities guests at the luxurious adults-only resort can take advantage of.

Here’s what it’s like to vacation at Impression Isla Mujeres by Secrets.

What makes Isla Mujeres so special?

Isla Mujeres translates to “Island of Women,” and it is said to be where the Mayan goddess Ixchel resides. The only way to reach the island is by boat, a 15-minute ride from Cancun.

Like Cancun, Isla Mujeres has pristine beaches but with a more laid-back vibe. Think of the island as a less overwhelming, more intimate version of the tourist hub. There is a downtown square, but it’s nothing like Cancun’s party block, which I found overwhelming the last time I visited.

Here’s what Isla Mujeres has to offer visitors:

  • On display is Isla Mujeres’ natural beauty. The island is surrounded by an azure sea so vivid it looks as if it were dyed. The calm waters invite travelers to spend most of their time there, and the island is known for flourishing marine life – it’s sometimes called the whale shark capital. If you don’t spot one of these docile sea creatures, whose population has declined more than 50% over the past 75 years, there are still plenty of fish and giant shells to see below the surface. Even the resort pays tribute to the gentle giants by being the home base for shark conservation nonprofit Saving Our Sharks Foundation. A portion of each stay at Impressions Isla Mujeres by Secrets goes to the local organization, meaning guests are supporting “marine biodiversity conservation, promoting sustainable fishing practices, conservation efforts and responsible tourism,” Erica Doyne, senor vice president of marketing and communications at Hyatt Hotels Corp., told USA TODAY.
  • As for non-living sea wonders, the island is home to the Museo Subacuático de Arte , one of fewer than 10 underwater art museums worldwide. Since 2010, visitors have been able to swim among the more than 500 life-size submerged sculptures, which also add biomass to the reef system. If going below the surface isn’t your thing, you can book a tour by glass-bottom boat.
  • Though the most popular of ancient Mayan temples, Chichén-Itza, is on the peninsula, Isla Mujeres has its share of cultural and historical sites. Visitors can make their way to the Mayan Temple of Ixchel, perched atop a striking seaside cliff in Punta Sur on the most southern point of the island, a short distance from the resort. On the mornings of the new year, Isla Mujeres residents gather here to greet the first rays of sunlight.

What is it like to stay at Impressions Isla Mujeres?

Relaxing and recharging are the focal points of the adults-only resort, which opened in 2023 as the second property in the Impression by Secrets brand, run by World of Hyatt. You can skip the front desk; check-in is done on the boat. Upon arrival at the dock, guests are greeted with a welcome drink and their personal butler, who is easily reachable via WhatsApp. During my stay, I often forgot I was in Cancun and not some private island in the Caribbean (or at least, how I imagine that would be like).

The property: The ocean is the resort's centerpiece, and its vistas are prioritized, from the rooftop infinity pool to the oceanfront rooms with their private terrace complete with an outdoor hot tub. Woven throughout the property are subtle reminders of the sea and the creatures within, such as sculptures of whale sharks by Mexican artist César Menchaca using upcycled plastic and elegant lobby seating echoing the shape of a starfish.

The property was once an abandoned hotel, but you’d never know it. Looking up, you can see how the whitewashed resort pays tribute to its location by resembling a seashell. Its cliffside location, tucked-away courtyards and archways give it a Santorini architectural feel.

“Built into the natural landscape atop a coastal cliff, the development of Impression Isla Mujeres by Secrets was designed with purpose and inspired by a profound respect for the natural beauty and cultural richness of Isla Mujeres,” Doyne said.

A dock wraps around the 125-room resort’s beachfront, providing plenty of cabana space for guests to hunker down in and enclosing a swimming oasis. Hammocks hang off the dock, inches above the water, inviting you in for a daytime nap.

With spring break around the corner, it'll cost two adults during the week of April 5-12 about $1,100 a night for an ocean-view room with two double beds, or one king bed and a sofa area. This rate includes a terrace, free laundry service, boat transfers, all amenities, and, of course, food and beverage. You can also use World of Hyatt points to book, and there’s a member rate.

The same week at fellow Isla Mujeres high-end resort Hotel Privilege Aluxes Isla Mujeres will run you more than $4,190 a night for an ocean-view suite, which has a large living area, food and beverage and similar amenities. (Although this seems a high rate, it is cheaper later in the year. A normal room is $1,949 in September, but there’s no terrace or promised ocean views.)

Eating well: The all-inclusive food and drink at Impression Isla Mujeres were top-notch, with eight dining options to choose from, ranging from Italian to Japanese cuisine and nine bars and lounges. My favorite restaurant was the breezy La Vista, which served Mexican fare to outdoor tables overlooking the water.

It was my first time at an all-inclusive resort, and I indulged almost daily in the unlimited room service, with help from an in-room touchscreen tablet. If I didn’t hear the doorbell, staff would place the food in a two-way cabinet, lending to my peace and quiet.

To do: Besides the difficult choice between lounging by the pool or beach, guests can participate in robust daily programming, from wellness offerings to cultural enrichment workshops. I attended a smoke-cleansing session during sunset, and not only were the views breathtaking but I learned more about the Indigenous spiritual practice. Those who want more of a thrill can try out the four-story waterslide that empties into the ocean, go snorkeling or take one of the free bikes out for a ride. It takes only about 40 minutes to cruise the entire island.

We live in an imperfect world full of joy and sorrow. In short, life happens. In New York City, we openly weep because there is nowhere to turn, not the privacy of a car or even an apartment with roommates. Sometimes, you can do nothing to prepare for the worst news of your life. Except, there is…I found a setting spray so powerful that tears shed at a funeral can’t even bring it down.

I stumbled upon a secret weapon: e.l.f.’s All Night Blue Light Micro-Setting Mist for $10. When I’m not crying, I also struggle with my makeup, staying on 9-5 most days, let alone have tears shed the layers of pore-perfecting primers and goops I’ve smeared across my face, all in the name of beauty.

RELATED: I tried $104 worth of e.l.f products to find what’s worth it — my top picks

A few spritzes of this magic mist, and my makeup remained intact through a torrent of tears shed in front of a crowd. Its matte finish stayed put, unaffected by my emotional highs and lows.

But this mist does more than lock in your look. Thanks to glucosylation, it shields your skin from harmful blue light, while aloe and elderflower extract soothe and refresh, leaving your skin feeling weightless and revitalized.

Stay All Night Blue Light Micro-Setting Mist

Stay All Night Blue Light Micro-Setting Mist

This mist locks a matte, shine-free finish. Spray about eight to ten inches away from your face in a zig-zag motion, and is great for all skin types: dry, oily, and combination.

As e.l.f. proudly proclaims on its site, “No touch-ups needed,” and I couldn’t agree more. After openly weeping in front of 300 people, I returned to the bathroom to pull myself together, only to find my makeup was untouched and more secure than Botox. This product has exceeded my expectations, proving to be a true lifesaver in moments of distress.

Plus, e.l.f. is vegan and cruelty-free! All this for just $10? I think you need to try this for yourself — pronto. You never know when it’ll be a lifesaver for saving face, quite literally.
