How Big Are Cruise Ship Cabins? 27 Examples, All Cabin Types

If you’re taking a cruise you may be wondering about how big cruise ship cabins actually are. Many first-time cruisers worry about the cabins feeling small and claustrophobic which is something that I’ve never found to be the case. I

‘ve been on multiple cruises and in this article, we will explore the average sizes of inside, oceanview, and balcony cabins.

How Big Are Inside Cruise Cabins?

The average size of an inside cabin is 167 feet squared (15.7 meters squared). This varies not only by cruise line but also by ship. The majority of inside cabins are between 160-180 square feet with some being as small as 120ft2 and some as large as 200ft2.

Below are 9 examples of inside cabin sizes. If the cruise ship in question has multiple different grades of inside cabin an average has been taken.

How Big Are Outside (Oceanview) Cruise Cabins?

The average size of an outside (oceanview) cabin is 180 feet squared (15 meters squared). This varies not only by cruise line but also by ship. The majority of outside (oceanview) cabins are between 170-190 square feet with some being as small as 150 ft2 and some as large as 220 ft2.

Outside cabin sizes are usually pretty similar to inside cabin sizes. If you are wondering whether you should book an inside or outside cabin, check out this post:

Cruise Ship Cabins – Inside or Outside, Which Should You Book?

Below are 9 examples of outside cabin sizes.

Oceanview and inside cabins usually have the same amenities:

In an inside cabin or oceanview you’ll typically find the following:

If you get to your cabin and see that the bed isn’t as you’d like, just ask your cabin steward and they’ll change it for you.

During the day these are tidied away so that you have more space in the cabin. If you’d like them to be kept down just ask your cabin steward.

That said, as long as they are clean and functional I think that’s all that you need. The bathrooms are located furthest into the ship and it would be very strange for you to find a window in a cruise ship bathroom.

There is one exception to the standard layout of the cabin bathroom. Onboard the Norwegian Epic you actually have a shower on one side and the toilet on the other, the sink is in the main room and there’s a curtain to protect your privacy. This is not typical but an interesting example.

norwegian epic inside cabin

  • You’ll also find lots of storage space on the majority of cruise ships. I stayed in an inside cabin onboard the Marella explorer which actually had 16 drawers! I was only on board for 3 days so definitely didn’t need the space but appreciated it anyway. You’ll usually find that you’ll have a closet just after the bathroom and usually drawers here too. On most cruise ships you’ll find bedside tables and possibly a desk.

How Big Are Balcony Cabins on a Cruise Ship?

The average size of a balcony cabin is 197 feet squared (18.2 meters squared). This varies not only by cruise line but also by ship. The majority of balcony cabins are between 180-200 square feet with some being as small as 150 ft2 and some as large as 305 ft2.

Below are 9 examples of balcony cabin sizes. These are all standard balconies.

Other types of balcony cabins:

If you do need a balcony cabin with more room a good option is to book what is often called a ‘family’ balcony cabin. These do cost more than standard balcony cabins but are often much larger and can sometimes hold more passengers.

Another option, if needed, is to book an accessible cabin. Accessible cabins are available for all cabin grades and are considerably larger. Please only book one if you need it though. It can be difficult for people that need accessible cabins, such as wheelchair users, to book cruises as accessible rooms sell out quickly.

Balcony Cabin Amenities

You’ll find all of the same things that you’ll find in an inside or oceanview cabin in a balcony room. The decor and style is usually the same it’ll just be on a slightly larger scale.

In a balcony cabin you’ll also find the following:

  • A sofa or chairs. Because of the slightly bigger space, you’re usually able to fit in an additional area for sitting. This is great if you want to spend any time in your cabin ordering room service or watching a movie.
  • A balcony. The size of the balcony does vary by cruise ship but most usually have room for a couple of chairs and a small table. On some balconies where there is more space, you may find sun loungers or a hammock but this isn’t the norm.
  • Additional storage space. In balcony cabins, you’ll usually find that you have more storage space than in inside or oceanview cabins. This may be an extra set of drawers or shelves in the closet.

Are Cruise Cabins Claustrophobic?

The majority of people that cruise does not find cruise cabins to be claustrophobic. If you are prone to claustrophobia it may be a good idea to book a balcony cabin as having some outside space often makes this better. Cruise cabins are usually organized well which makes them feel more spacious.

If you feel claustrophobic in a cabin may depend on how much space you have at home. Below is a comparison to my home which may explain why I don’t find cabins claustrophobic at all.

How do Cruise Cabin Sizes Compare?

I used to live in a very small apartment, small even by UK standards. The bedroom was 92ft2 and the bathroom was 36ft2. Adding this together gives me square footage of 128ft2! This may explain why I don’t feel claustrophobic in even the smallest inside cabin. If you’re in doubt, consider measuring your bedroom at home.

Bedroom at Home

128ft is smaller than most inside and oceanview cabins. It’s much smaller than your standard balcony and is 32 times smaller than Independence of the Seas Presidential Suite which comes in at a whopping 4891 ft2!

To Conclude:

Inside and ocean view cabins generally hover around 160 – 180 ft2. Oceanview cabins can be a little bigger but they’ll usually not much bigger than inside cabins. Balcony cabins are normally considerably larger and are around 180-200 ft2.

How much space do you really need on a cruise...?

If, like me, you find it difficult to work out what you're getting when you choose a spacious (or not so spacious) cabin, this is a rule of thumb guide to help you out...

100 - 200 square feet

A cabin (and it really is a cabin, don't get fooled with fancy words like 'stateroom') in this grouping is going to be pretty compact, ranging from 'broom-cupboard' at the bottom end (up to about 130 square feet) to 'fine if you like to be out and about a lot' at the top… You will find that cabins on river cruises tend to fall into this bracket, unless you are paying quite a premium.

Fixed window stateroom on AmaCerto (100 - 200 square feet)

200 - 300 square feet

This is the lead-in size for most luxury lines, with a verandah, at about 50 square feet, additional. The accommodation will probably be referred to as a suite, although it actually means a room with a separate, but not separated, sleeping and living area. Expect a bathroom with a tub and separate shower cubicle (be sure to double check this if a bathtub, or indeed a walk-in shower, is important to you), a walk-in closet, and a living area bathed in light from the balcony, with a two person sofa and chairs, table and desk/vanity unit.

Crystal Symphony - Deluxe Stateroom with Veranda (200 - 300 square feet)

300 - 400 square feet

Now you are moving to something significantly more spacious. This is the sort of space you will get if you opt for Princess Grill on Cunard , or the Concierge Suites on Regent . You will have increased living area, so if you like to dine in your room, for example, there is plenty of space to enable you to do that, with a Butler or Steward to serve you. There will be far more storage and display space so if you are travelling for a while and like to bring things from home with you (photos, books etc) this will work fine.

Regent Seven Seas Mariner - Deluxe & Concierge Suite (300 - 400 square feet)

400 - 500 square feet

Now you're talking! You are up to Penthouse space here, and you will probably have a separated bedroom and a full living/dining area. Because of the width of the suite, you will have extra verandah space, more than enough for a couple of loungers and probably a table and chairs too. A guest bathroom is likely - and this space is more than ample for entertaining maybe two or four guests.

Regent Seven Seas Mariner - Penthouse Suite

500 - 1,000 square feet

You are in the realms of the very special. Suites of this size are likely to have been individually designed, with great artwork and quirky additional features (these are the cruise line showcase areas). Expect lavish bathtubs, a full butler's pantry, separate dining area, maybe some gym equipment, and sufficient space that you needn't ever emerge from your suite if you don't fancy it, except maybe to go ashore.

Hapag-Lloyd Cruises - Europa 2 Grand Penthouse Suite (500 - 1,000 square feet)

1,000 square feet plus

From the Queens Grill duplex apartments on Queen Mary 2 , to Seven Seas Explorer 's largest suite at sea (the Regent Suite at 3,875 square feet) or the Solstice Suite classes on Celebrity, this accommodation is ideal for family groups travelling together (there will often be a second bedroom, and sometimes the opportunity to annex additional adjoining rooms) and for people who are not prepared to compromise in any way whilst on holiday. A great choice for longer voyages, or trips with plenty of sea days.

Regent Seven Seas Explorer - Regent Suite (1,000+ square feet)

How Big Are The Cruise Ship Cabins? 5 Factors that Determine Cabin Size

Cruise ship cabins offer a cozy retreat for travelers amidst the vastness of the oceans and the bustle of shipboard life. From snug interior rooms to expansive suites, the size of these accommodations can vary widely, influencing the overall comfort and experience of your voyage. In this article, we’ll explore the five factors that determine cabin size on cruise ships, ensuring you set sail with the right expectations.

Table of Contents

How big are the cruise ship cabins?

Cruise ship cabins vary in size depending on the cabin type, with interior cabins being the smallest and most budget-friendly, ranging from 100 to 200 square feet. Ocean view cabins are slightly larger, typically ranging from 160 to 180 square feet, offering a view of the sea through a window. Balcony cabins provide extra space with a private balcony and can start at around 180 square feet, while suites offer the most spacious accommodations, ranging from 300 square feet to over 1,000 square feet, featuring separate living areas and larger balconies.

Cabin sizes also differ among cruise lines and specific ships, with newer vessels generally offering larger and more luxurious cabins compared to older ships. Factors such as solo cabins for single occupancy and accessible cabins designed for guests with disabilities further contribute to the range of cabin sizes available, ensuring there is a suitable option for every traveler’s needs and preferences aboard a cruise ship.

5 Factors That Determine Cabin Size

1. cabin type.

When considering cruise ship cabins, the type of cabin plays a significant role in determining its size. Interior cabins, the most compact and budget-friendly option, range from 100 to 200 square feet. For those seeking a glimpse of the sea, ocean view cabins provide slightly more space at around 160 to 180 square feet. Balcony cabins offer the luxury of a private outdoor space and typically start at 180 square feet, while suites provide the most generous accommodations, varying from 300 square feet to over 1,000 square feet in the most luxurious categories. Selecting the right cabin type based on personal preferences and budget is essential for a comfortable and enjoyable cruise experience.

2. Cruise Line

The cruise line you choose can also impact the size of the cabin you’ll be staying in. Different cruise lines may offer cabins of varying sizes within the same category. Some cruise lines are known for providing more spacious cabins compared to others, so researching the specific offerings of each cruise line can help you find a cabin that best suits your preferences. Consider reading reviews from past passengers to gain insights into the cabin sizes offered by different cruise lines.

3. Ship Age

The age of the ship can influence the size and condition of the cabins onboard. Generally, newer ships tend to feature larger and more modern cabin layouts, catering to the evolving needs and expectations of passengers. Cruise lines often take passenger feedback into account when designing newer ships, aiming to provide more spacious and comfortable accommodations. Opting for a cruise on a newer vessel may offer you a chance to enjoy larger cabins with updated amenities and design elements.

4. Solo Cabins

For solo travelers, solo cabins are specially designed for single occupancy and are typically smaller in size compared to standard cabins. These solo cabins provide a cozy and efficient space for solo travelers, offering all the necessary amenities in a compact layout. While solo cabins may be smaller in size, they are thoughtfully designed to maintain a comfortable and enjoyable stay for solo cruisers.

5. Accessible Cabins

Accessible cabins cater to guests with disabilities and are designed with larger layouts to accommodate wheelchairs or other mobility aids. These cabins prioritize accessibility and comfort, featuring wider doorways, spacious bathrooms with roll-in showers, and other accessibility features. When booking a cruise, individuals with specific accessibility needs should inquire about the availability of accessible cabins to maintain a smooth and enjoyable cruising experience tailored to their requirements.

Understanding Cabin Categories and Their Sizes

  • Interior Cabins : Interior cabins are the most compact and budget-friendly option on cruise ships, typically ranging from 100 to 200 square feet. These cabins do not have windows or natural light but provide a cozy retreat for passengers looking for a comfortable place to rest after a day of exploring the ship’s amenities and ports of call. Despite their smaller size, interior cabins are designed efficiently to maximize space and offer all the necessary amenities for a pleasant cruise experience.
  • Ocean View Cabins : Ocean view cabins are slightly larger than interior cabins, ranging from 160 to 180 square feet and offering a window with a view of the sea. These cabins provide a sense of connection to the ocean and allow natural light to brighten the space. Passengers staying in ocean view cabins can enjoy glimpses of the sea from the comfort of their room, enhancing the overall cruising experience with serene views and natural beauty.
  • Balcony Cabins : Balcony cabins feature a private balcony, adding valuable outdoor space to the cabin. Starting at around 180 square feet, these cabins offer passengers the opportunity to step outside and enjoy fresh sea air and panoramic views. The balcony serves as an extension of the cabin, providing a relaxing spot to unwind and take in the sights and sounds of the ocean. Some balcony cabins may also have additional seating areas for enhanced comfort and leisure.
  • Suites : Suites are the most spacious and luxurious cabin category on cruise ships, ranging from 300 square feet to over 1,000 square feet in size. These accommodations often include separate living areas, walk-in closets, and larger balconies, providing a high level of comfort and elegance for passengers seeking an upgraded cruise experience. Suites cater to travelers looking for extra space, privacy, and upscale amenities, offering a luxurious retreat at sea.
  • Accessible Cabins : Accessible cabins are specially designed for guests with disabilities and feature larger layouts to accommodate wheelchairs and mobility aids. These cabins prioritize accessibility and comfort, with wider doorways, spacious bathrooms with roll-in showers, and other accessibility features to maintain a seamless cruising experience for passengers with specific needs. Accessible cabins allow all travelers to enjoy the benefits of cruising comfortably and inclusively.

Impact of Ship Size and Design on Cabin Dimensions

The size and design of a cruise ship have a significant impact on the dimensions of cabins available to passengers. Larger ships tend to offer a greater variety of cabin sizes and layouts, including more spacious options such as suites with separate living areas and expansive balconies. Modern ship designs prioritize efficient use of space, with innovative cabin configurations that maximize comfort and functionality.

For example, newer ships often feature cabins with clever storage solutions, flexible furniture arrangements, and contemporary design elements that create a sense of openness and luxury. ship design plays a major role in cabin placement and layout, with prime locations such as those near the ship’s amenities or offering stunning ocean views typically commanding higher prices. Overall, the ship’s size and design influence the overall cabin dimensions and amenities available to passengers, contributing to their overall cruise experience in terms of comfort, convenience, and aesthetics.

The Role of Price in Determining Cabin Size

The price of a cruise cabin plays a major role in determining its size and amenities. Higher-priced cabins, such as suites or cabins with balconies, generally offer more space, luxurious features, and enhanced comfort compared to lower-priced interior cabins. For example, suites often come with additional perks like priority boarding, exclusive access to specialty dining venues, and personalized service from dedicated staff members.

Passengers willing to pay a premium for larger cabins can enjoy more spacious living areas, walk-in closets, and upscale furnishings, creating a more indulgent and relaxing cruise experience. On the other hand, budget-friendly cabins may have smaller dimensions but still provide essential amenities for a comfortable stay at sea. When choosing a cabin based on price, passengers should consider their preferences, budget constraints, and desired level of comfort to select the option that best suits their needs and enhances their overall cruise enjoyment.

Maximizing Space in Smaller Cabins: Tips and Tricks

  • Utilize Vertical Space : In smaller cabins, making use of vertical space is essential for maximizing storage and living areas. Consider utilizing wall-mounted shelves, over-the-door organizers, and hanging storage solutions to keep belongings organized and create more room to move around.
  • Multi-Functional Furniture : Opt for multi-functional furniture pieces that serve dual purposes to optimize space efficiency in a compact cabin. Examples include fold-down beds that convert into seating areas during the day, storage ottomans that double as seating and provide hidden storage, or collapsible tables that can be expanded for dining and folded away when not in use. Selecting furniture that serves multiple functions helps maximize utility while minimizing the overall footprint within the cabin.
  • Light Colors and Mirrors : Light colors and mirrors can visually expand the space in a smaller cabin, creating a brighter and more spacious feel. Choose light-colored bedding, curtains, and decor to reflect natural light and create an airy ambiance. Placing mirrors strategically can also enhance the sense of openness by reflecting light and creating the illusion of additional space. Incorporating these design elements can transform a small cabin into a more inviting and visually expansive retreat.
  • Organizational Systems : Implementing efficient organizational systems can help keep belongings tidy and easily accessible in a limited space. Utilize storage bins, under-bed storage containers, and compartmentalized organizers to categorize items and maximize storage capacity. Assign specific locations for different items to maintain order and prevent clutter from accumulating. incorporating effective organizational systems can help streamline daily routines and maintain a neat and functional living environment within the cabin.
  • Minimize Clutter : To create a sense of spaciousness in a smaller cabin, it’s crucial to minimize clutter and maintain a streamlined environment. Regularly declutter surfaces, cabinets, and storage areas by removing unnecessary items or belongings that are not frequently used. Opt for compact and stackable storage solutions to prevent overcrowding and maintain a sense of openness within the cabin. keeping clutter to a minimum can help enhance the overall comfort and functionality of the space while maximizing the available room for relaxation and enjoyment.

The Luxury of Suite Categories: How Big Can They Get?

Suite categories on cruise ships offer the epitome of luxury and spacious accommodations, with sizes ranging from 300 square feet to over 1,000 square feet in the most extravagant categories. These suites often feature separate living areas, walk-in closets, and expansive balconies, providing passengers with a high level of comfort and elegance during their cruise experience.

Some luxury suites may even include additional amenities such as private dining areas, whirlpool tubs, and personal butler service to cater to the discerning tastes of guests seeking an indulgent retreat at sea. The generous size and opulent features of suite categories create a lavish and exclusive environment for passengers looking to elevate their cruise experience and enjoy a truly luxurious onboard lifestyle.

Comparing Cabin Sizes Across Popular Cruise Lines

  • Royal Caribbean : Royal Caribbean offers a range of cabin sizes across its fleet, with interior cabins typically starting at around 150 square feet and suites exceeding 1,000 square feet on some of their newer ships. Known for its themed decor and immersive entertainment, Disney offers spacious suites with multiple bedrooms, elegant design elements, and exclusive experiences for guests looking to enjoy a magical and enchanting cruise vacation.

Finding the Best Cabin for Your Needs and Budget

  • Consider Cabin Type : When choosing a cabin, consider the type that best suits your needs and budget, whether it’s an interior cabin, ocean view cabin, balcony cabin, or suite. Interior cabins are ideal for budget-conscious travelers, while balcony cabins offer outdoor space and ocean views. Suites provide luxurious amenities and spacious accommodations for those seeking an upscale experience.
  • Research Cruise Lines : Research different cruise lines to compare cabin sizes, amenities, and pricing across various ships. Each cruise line has its own unique offerings, with some known for larger cabins or more lavish suites than others. Reading reviews and viewing virtual tours can help you gauge the cabin sizes and layouts available on different cruise lines.
  • Factor in Ship Age : Consider the age of the ship when selecting a cabin, as newer vessels often feature more modern designs and larger cabins compared to older ships. Cruise lines continuously innovate and upgrade their newer ships to provide passengers with enhanced comfort and spacious accommodations, making them a preferred choice for those seeking more roomy cabins.
  • Evaluate Price vs. Size : Balance your budget with the desired cabin size and amenities to find the best value for your money. Higher-priced cabins typically offer more space and luxury features, while budget-friendly options may be smaller but still provide essential comforts for a pleasant cruise experience. Consider what aspects are most important to you in a cabin and allocate your budget accordingly.
  • Special Needs Considerations : If you have specific needs, such as accessibility requirements or traveling solo, ensure you choose a cabin that accommodates these needs. Accessible cabins are designed for guests with disabilities, offering larger layouts and specialized features, while solo cabins cater to single travelers with compact yet comfortable accommodations. Taking into account any special requirements guarantees a comfortable and enjoyable cruise experience tailored to your individual needs.

Thousands of cabin pictures, interactive deck plans, learn more about us.

Founded in 2001 by Dominique Vaccaro, a passionate cruise ship and old liner enthusiast since his childhood. He was concerned that only a few web sites provided a helpful and practical search for obtaining and visualization of cruise ship deck plans and staterooms available. Those that did, usually offered very little interactivity to find the configuration and location of a stateroom. One would get lost and perhaps bored by the opening of dozens of windows searching for information.

That is why this site came into existence. To help visitors, first time or even experienced cruise customers and travel agents search and find, through an easy to use and complete interface, the stateroom that would be best for their tastes, means or requests.

The 5 most desirable cabin locations on any cruise ship

What is the best location for a cabin on a cruise ship?

As a cruise writer for more than 20 years , I've heard that question a lot, and it's not an easy one to answer. On any given cruise vessel, the best cabin location for one person might not be the best choice for another.

The ideal cabin for a light sleeper on a particular ship, for instance, might be a room tucked away in the quietest corner of the vessel. But another passenger on the same ship who cares more about the view might be happiest with a completely different spot.

For more cruise guides, news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

On a typical cruise ship, cabins are spread out all over the place — high and low, and to the front, middle and back. Not that that's always the case.

Some cruise vessels — particularly river ships — have cabins clustered at their backs with public areas at their fronts. Other vessels, such as most of the ocean ships operated by luxury lines Seabourn , Silversea Cruises and Scenic Luxury Cruises , have cabins clustered at their fronts with public areas at their backs.

Cruise cabins also come in all shapes and sizes and with a variety of amenities and benefits. Some lines, such as Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line , offer a huge range of room options , from tiny, windowless "inside" cabins to palatial suites, in all sorts of locations on their vessels.

Indeed, there's such a wide variety of not only cabin locations but also types of cabins on ships that the best way to narrow down the choices of accommodations on any given vessel might be to assemble a list of cabins you definitely don't want to choose.

As it happens, we've already done that here at TPG in our guide to cabin locations you definitely should avoid .

Still, there are some broad categories of cabin locations on cruise ships that always are in high demand due to their prime locations.

Related: 6 reasons why you want to pay up for a balcony cabin

Midship cabins

These are the cabins that you should seek if you're particularly prone to seasickness.

The big allure of a midship cabin is its stability. You won't feel the rocking of the sea in a midship cabin nearly as much as you will in a cabin toward the front or back of a vessel. This is because ships are like teeter-totters. They pitch forward and back around a central axis that barely moves.

If you are in the center of a ship, you are at the equivalent of the center of a teeter-totter. Even in very rough seas, you're not going to move nearly as much when the ship goes up and down in the waves as someone located at either of the far ends of the ship.

Note that it also helps to be low to the water if you're worried about seasickness.

On very large ships, where activity areas are spread far apart, midship cabins also offer the advantage of being at the center of everything. The main pool deck, for instance, is likely right above you when you are in a midship cabin — not a long walk away. Ditto for central interior areas.

Cabins at the back

There's something mesmerizing about being at the back of a ship overlooking its wake. When you are in the open ocean, you can see the long trail of churned-up water behind you, stretching seemingly forever like a road in the sea. It is tangible evidence of your journey. When you are pulling away from a port, you have the best view in the house.

I admit I could stand at the back of a ship for hours looking out over the water, and I'm a big fan of rear-facing cabins — as long as they have a balcony. I'm firmly in the camp that says rear-facing balcony cabins are among the best balcony cabins on any ship.

Often, the balconies on rear-facing cabins are bigger than the balconies on side-facing cabins, and they also feel quiet. There are far fewer balcony cabins at the back of a ship than on the sides of a ship, so you don't hear a lot of noise from your neighbors.

If your cabin is at the rear corner of a ship, you might even have a balcony that wraps around two sides of the vessel. Those sorts of balconies are the ultimate in cool.

Note that on some ships, all or most of the rear-facing cabins are large, pricey suites, but this isn't always the case. Carnival Cruise Line ships, for instance, typically have quite a few non-suite accommodations at their backs.

Related: Everything you want to know about cabins and suites on Carnival Cruise Line ships

Cabins at the front

I'll admit, I'm not a huge fan of forward-facing cabins. For starters, there is nowhere on a ship more prone to movement than the front of a ship. Forward-facing cabins also often lack balconies, for reasons I will explain in a moment.

All that said, many cruisers just love forward-facing cabins. They love them because the view can be spectacular, particularly as you arrive at a new port. Also, some people love the idea of being at the very front of a ship and being able to see where they're going.

Related: Why it pays to upgrade your cruise cabin

Forward-facing cabins also sometimes come with extra space. This is because they sometimes incorporate the oddly angled interior spaces that exist at the front of ships, which often have slanted fronts. As mentioned above, forward-facing cabins often will not have balconies, as the wind over the bow of a ship that's underway is such that a balcony isn't practical. Instead, they'll have large windows — sometimes floor-to-ceiling windows — that offer stellar views.

Cabins surrounded by other cabins

Light sleepers, take note: The best place to be if you want the best chance of not being bothered by noise is a cabin that is surrounded by other cabins. This means a cabin that has a cabin directly above it and a cabin directly below it, as well as cabins on both sides.

To find such a cabin is harder than you might think. On the typical ship, the top deck of cabins is directly below the pool and activity decks, which can be noisy during the day and even into the night (yes, the noise sometimes will waft through your ceiling). The cabin deck just below that top deck of cabins can be a good choice.

But go a couple more decks down, and you're often right on top of interior entertainment decks that are home to music lounges, theaters and other noisy venues.

Related: 15 ways cruising newbies waste money on their first cruise

If the ultimate in quietude is your goal, you'll also want to avoid cabins anywhere near elevators, passenger launderettes and other areas that draw foot traffic. It can take some studying of deck plans, but as seasoned cruisers know, it's worth holding out for a cabin that is far away from anything that could keep you up at night.

Cabins near the spa

If you're a big spa fan — the kind who can spend hours on vacation getting treatments — you'll want to get a cabin right near your ship's spa. Trust us. Walking long distances across a bustling ship in your robe and slippers for a spa appointment can be a bit, well, weird.

Cruise lines cater to spa lovers with special spa cabins that are close to the spa and come with special spa amenities. These might include plush bathrobes and slippers to wear on your way to the spa, upgraded toiletries, scrub kits, aromatherapy diffusers and even yoga mats. The cabins sometimes also come with spa discounts, unlimited spa lounge access and other spa-related perks.

Lines that have designated spa cabins on some or all ships include Celebrity Cruises , Carnival, Holland America , Azamara and MSC Cruises .

On Celebrity, the spa cabins — called AquaClass cabins — come with exclusive access to a special spa restaurant called Blu.

If you're interested in a spa cabin, you'll want to book far in advance. They often sell out early.

Bottom line

There is no right answer to the question of what is the best cabin location on a cruise ship. The perfect location for a cabin for one passenger might not be the perfect location for another.

That said, there are certain places on cruise ships that are better than others when it comes to cabin location, including the front and back of vessels. There's nothing quite like being able to look forward from your room when on a ship approaching a port or to watch the wake of the ship from a rear-facing cabin.

The Alternative to Huge Cruises? 3 Masts, 28 Sails and Wind Power.

We checked out the 136-passenger Sea Cloud Spirit on a Mediterranean cruise. In this era of gargantuan ships, its elegant clipper design, wooden decks and relatively small size stands out.

By Ceylan Yeğinsu

From the bridge of the three-masted windjammer, the Sea Cloud Spirit , the captain called out the words we’d all been waiting for.

“Let’s set the sails!” he cried, after turning off the engines, while maneuvering to maintain an optimum angle for his 18 deckhands to climb into the shrouds and unfurl the ship’s 44,132 square feet of sails by hand.

Like acrobats, the crew scurried up the masts to the upper topgallant sails that rose nearly 200 feet above us. The ship’s captain, Vukota Stojanovic, later insisted that none of it was for show. “Whenever there is an opportunity to sail, we sail,” he said.

For the next hour, the crew hauled the ropes until the 28 sails were billowing in the wind, propelling the 452-foot-long ship — the world’s largest passenger sailing vessel on which the sails are raised by hand — toward its first port of call, Portofino, Italy.

At a time when cruise lines are packing their ever-more-gargantuan ships with water parks and basketball courts, the 136-passenger Sea Cloud Spirit, with its old-fashioned clipper design and wooden decks, stands out. It is the newest ship from the Hamburg-based Sea Cloud Cruises , and while it is the company’s biggest, Sea Cloud said it wanted to leave space for passengers to connect to the surrounding elements.

“Wherever you are on the ship, it feels like you are sitting on the water,” said Amelia Dominick, 71, a retired real estate agent from Cologne, Germany, who was on her third cruise onboard the Sea Cloud Spirit.

I had arrived for a four-night “taster sailing” from Nice, France, to the Ligurian region of Italy, designed to entice passengers to sign up for a longer cruise. Here’s what I found.

The ship and cabins

The Spirit has many comforts and luxuries, including a fitness center, library, hair salon and a spa with a Finnish sauna that overlooks the sea. The deck layouts are spacious, with nooks carved out for privacy and relaxation.

Sixty-nine spacious cabins have windows that open onto the sea. My room, a junior suite on the third deck, had two large arched windows, mahogany tables, a balcony and a comfortable couch and armchair. The marble bathroom was lavish, with a gold-plated sink and large jetted bathtub.

The elegant interior design is inspired by the original Sea Cloud, built in 1931 for Marjorie Merriweather Post, the American heiress of the General Foods Corporation, with glossy wooden panels and gold trimmings. The Sea Cloud was the largest private sailing yacht in the world before Post handed it over to the U.S. Navy for use as a weather-reporting vessel during World War II. The four-mast, 64-passenger ship has since been restored to its former glory and will sail across the Aegean and Adriatic this summer.

The experience felt authentic — even before the sails were set — with a detailed safety drill. On most cruises, the drill entails a safety video and signing in at an assembly point. But here, passengers put on their life jackets and walked through emergency scenarios that included rationing food supplies and fishing from the lifeboat.

Each day, the sails were set, even during heavy rain and wind speeds over 30 knots. Guests wanting to participate in the rigging are usually invited to do so, but the weather conditions made it too risky for this sailing.

“It was amazing to watch the work go into putting the sails up and down and to experience the wind power pulling the ship so fast without the engines,” said Malte Rahnenfuehrer, a 50-year-old psychologist from Zurich, who was traveling with his partner and two children.

A man with dark hair wears navy blue and white clothing as the captain of a large windjammer sailing vessel. He stands on deck, a walkie-talkie-like device in his hand, beneath the ropes and riggings of the vessel's sails.

The captain

It is rare for cruise passengers to see the ship’s captain after the initial welcome drinks or gala dinner. But Capt. Vukota Stojanovic was omnipresent throughout the cruise, from setting sails to lifeguarding to mingling with guests.

Originally from Montenegro, Captain Stojanovic piloted container ships for years. When he was asked to consider helming the original Sea Cloud nearly 10 years ago, he hesitated because he had no experience sailing. Even after he learned the ropes — and there are 340 ropes (known as running rigging) on the vessel — he was unsure. “I grew to love the sailings, the boats, the crew the lifestyle, but I still felt I belonged on container ships,” he said. “It would be a big adjustment, especially because I would have to shave every day,” he joked.

Eventually, he accepted the opportunity and worked tirelessly to learn how to sail and operate the ship. Today, he keeps an “open bridge” policy, allowing passengers to visit the control room, even when he is wrestling with the wind.

“The crew and the passengers are all part of the experience, and I like to meet people and receive their feedback,” Captain Stojanovic said.

Environment

Sea Cloud Cruises aspires to take a “gentle” approach, using wind power to drive its ships wherever possible, even if that means changing course for optimal weather conditions. When sailing is not possible, the Spirit has two diesel-electric engines that run on low-sulfur marine diesel fuel. The company is also working with ports that have shore power capabilities to plug into the local electric power.

Onboard, there is an emphasis on reusable bottles and paper straws, and crew members separate solid waste to be compacted and removed when in port.

Excursions and Activities

We made stops in Portofino, San Remo, Italy, and St.-Tropez, France, anchoring offshore and getting to land by tender — a contrast to the big cruise ships with their loud horns and thick plumes of exhaust spewing from their funnels.

For passengers wanting to take a dip (there is no pool), the crew marked an area in the water with floats and an inflatable slide. The water was frigid, but many passengers took the plunge from the swimming deck. Guests could also take “Zodiac Safaris” around the ship to get views of the vessel from the water.

ship cruise cabin sizes

Excursions ranged from food and wine tours to e-biking and beach trips. In Portofino, passengers were free to explore the sights independently, including the Castello Brown Fortress and the lighthouse on Punta del Capo rock. There was ample time to eat meals on shore as the ship did not depart until 11 p.m. Over the summer, the Sea Cloud Spirit will sail to Spain, Portugal, France and the Azores, among other destinations. On Nov. 11, she will depart for St. Maarten in the Caribbean for the winter.

Wherever the vessel goes, said Mirell Reyes, president of Sea Cloud Cruise for North America, the company tries to “stay away from the crowds and ports where big cruise ships spit out 6,000 passengers.”

Summer prices, which include food and beverages, range from $3,995 for a four-night sailing in a superior cabin to $9,420 for a veranda suite. Seven-night sailings cost between $6,995 and $16,495.

How to get upgraded on a cruise ship in 2024.

Complimentary drinks and balcony views are among the benefits of being upgraded on a cruise ship.

Cruise vacations have never been more popular, with record passenger numbers leading to fully booked ships and fewer opportunities for complimentary or even paid upgrades. However, with the right approach, you can still secure an upgrade on your next cruise.

Upgrades to a higher grade of stateroom sometimes come with additional perks beyond the additional space and balcony views. That’s especially true if you land a suite, which often includes complimentary drinks packages and/or specialty dining opportunities.

It’s still possible to upgrade by simply asking at check-in or, better still, on board. At this stage, the cruise line knows exactly how many empty premium rooms there are and that it will otherwise be impossible to sell them, so cheaper upgrades may be available.

However, given the number of ships sailing at full capacity these days, you may find this impossible. Nevertheless, there are still some options to get upgraded in 2024.

Turn Auto-Upgrades On

Many cruise lines offer an auto-upgrade option when you book your cabin. By turning this setting on, you are allowing the cruise line to move you to a higher category cabin if one becomes available.

Anderson Silva Vs Chael Sonnen Results Decision And Reaction

Apple’s new iphone function when your battery dies beats samsung and google, nyt strands 105 hints spangram and answers for sunday june 16th.

This can happen for operational reasons, or because the cruise line thinks it has more chance of selling cheaper, lower-grade cabins at the last minute. Such upgrades can happen at any time before your departure, and you will usually be notified via email or through your online account with the cruise line.

However, there is a risk with turning this setting on. If successful, although you may be given what the cruise line considers a higher-grade cabin, it won’t necessarily be much of a difference in practice and also it may not be in the best location.

For example, you might be moved from an interior cabin to an ocean-view cabin, but it could be situated in a less desirable part of the ship, potentially at the very front or back of the ship, with a fully obstructed view, or adjacent to a noisy crew area.

Upgrade Bidding

The concept of bidding for premium economy or business class seats on airlines has been around for several years now, but it has only recently become popular in the cruise industry.

Several cruise lines now offer the opportunity to bid for an upgrade after you have booked your initial cabin. You place a bid on the type of cabin you want . If your bid is accepted, you get the upgrade at your bid price.

Of course, there is no guarantee your bid will be accepted, as it depends on many factors.

Working with a travel agent could increase your chances, as they may have access to information such as how much unsold inventory there is at higher accommodation grades on your specific cruise. The more unsold inventory, the lower the price you’ll need to bid to be successful.

Unfortunately for solo travelers, bidding on upgrades comes at a major disadvantage. The bidding process usually requires a minimum bid per person assuming double occupancy, which can make the upgrade quite costly for those traveling alone.

Forget It In High Season

Timing can significantly impact your chances of securing an upgrade, regardless of the upgrade method.

High season, which includes school breaks and summer months, is when ships are most likely to sail at full capacity. During these times, upgrades are much harder to come by due to the lack of available staterooms.

To increase your chances of an upgrade, consider booking your cruise during the shoulder season or the off-season. These are times when fewer people are traveling, and ships are not as full. As a result, cruise lines may be more inclined to offer upgrades to fill available premium cabins.

Prices are often lower during these periods, making it a more economical vacation choice.

Cruise Line Loyalty Programs

Typically, cruise line reward programs are not as lucrative or generous as equivalent airline or hotel programs. Free cruises are a rarity, but some perks such as free or discounted laundry, or free specialty dining, still make signing up worthwhile.

While it’s rare to find cabin upgrades as a perk in a loyalty program, they do exist, albeit at the high levels of cruise line loyalty.

Carnival’s VIFP club offers a complimentary cabin upgrade to guests reaching Diamond status, although this is a one-time benefit. Celebrity offers a free upgrade to its Aqua Class cabins as a perk in its Captain’s Club program.

Even if cabin upgrades aren’t a specified perk, signing up to a loyalty program is worth the few minutes it takes, especially if you’re a frequent cruiser with one line.

Cruise lines are likely to prioritize their most loyal customers when making more informal upgrade decisions.

WEATHER ALERT

A rip current statement in effect for Coastal Broward and Coastal Miami Dade Regions

Cruise ship workers accused of possessing child sex abuse, bestiality videos.

Chris Gothner , Digital Journalist

MIAMI – Miami-Dade police arrested two cruise ship workers over the weekend after cabin searches turned up both child sexual abuse material and bestiality videos on both of their cellphones, according to arrest reports.

The arrest reports don’t state which cruise lines the pair worked for.

Recommended Videos

According to the reports, U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents searched the cabins of both Igedeboy Mardika, a 28-year-old Indonesian national, and Sreerag Vazhayil, a 32-year-old Indian national, at PortMiami on Sunday.

During a border search of their cellphones, officers said they discovered videos of both boys and girls being raped and sexually abused by both men and women; the victims were as young as preschool-aged.

Mardika also distributed a child sexual abuse video, police said.

Police said Vazhayil had a video of a man having sex with a horse, while Mardika had three videos of women having sex with a horse, a dog and a pig respectively.

Authorities arrested Mardika on 16 felony charges related to the possession and promotion of child sexual abuse material, along with three counts of possessing videos depicting sexual conduct with animals.

Vazhayil is facing seven charges related to the possession of child sexual abuse material as well as one charge of possessing a video depicting sexual conduct with animals.

Both men remained in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center as of Monday; Mardika was being held on a $52,500 bond and an immigration detainer, while Vazhayil was being held on a $20,000 bond and an immigration detainer.

Margaritaville at Sea just doubled in size by welcoming a new ship

Ashley Kosciolek

Margaritaville at Sea's new ship, Islander, officially set sail on its first voyage from Tampa on Tuesday. So far, it's doing a great job of catering to Parrotheads with plenty of tropical decor, including a giant flip-flop photo backdrop in the atrium, two dining rooms with giant palm trees in the middle and renovated cabins that feel more like you're renting someone's beach house than taking up residence on a ship.

ship cruise cabin sizes

Until now, the line, a partnership between Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville brand and the former Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line, has only sailed from the Port of Palm Beach, Florida. Since 2022, it has exclusively offered two-night voyages on its first ship, the 1,680-passenger Paradise, to Freeport in the Bahamas .

With the addition of Islander, Margaritaville at Sea has increased its capacity by 160% and will now also serve Florida's west coast cruise market with regular four- and five-night departures to Key West and the Mexican Riviera from the Port of Tampa Bay.

Islander originally debuted in 2000 and sailed for Costa Cruises for more than two decades under the name Costa Atlantica. The vessel shared a ship design with Carnival Cruise Line 's Spirit Class . For that reason, Islander is likely to feel familiar to some cruisers.

I walked on board and immediately fell in love with the delightful mix of tropical Margaritaville vibes and remnants of designs by Joe Farcus, the architect and interior designer responsible for more than three decades of quirky decor on ships under the Carnival Corp. umbrella.

Under its new moniker, the 24-year-old, 2,650-passenger vessel was refurbished to include the first three-deck poolside LandShark bar, a tropical-themed atrium and cabins, and an adults-only pool and tiki bar. These updates make for colorful, lively fun that's synonymous with the Margaritaville name. Passengers can also look forward to 12 eateries and more than a dozen bars that serve a variety of cocktails.

The line's first ship debut had some hiccups . Stay tuned for more TPG coverage to see how Islander's first sailing compares and what you can expect from the new vessel.
