Simple Plan (formed in 1999) is an influential Canadian pop-punk and alternative rock five piece, hailing from Montréal, Québec, Canada.

Formed during the members’ time in high school, Simple Plan is comprised of lead vocalist Pierre Bouvier, lead guitarist Jeff Stinco, rhythm guitarist and backing vocalist Sébastien Lefebvre, bassist and backing vocalist David Desrosiers, and drummer Chuck Comeau. Prior to the band’s earliest incarnation, Bouvier and Comeau had played in the relatively successful Canadian band Reset, who are known for touring alongside MxPx, Ten Foot Pole, and Face to Face. Rocking a pure punk-pop sound, Simple Plan performed at the 2001 Van Warped Tour, before heading to the studio to record their debut. With vocal assistance from Good Charlotte’s Joel Madden and Blink-182’s Mark Hoppus, the resulting album “No Pads, No Helmets… Just Balls” was released in March 2002. Aided by the singles “I’m Just a Kid”, “I’d Do Anything”, “Addicted”, and “Perfect”, the album peaked at No. 35 on the Billboard 200, later being certified double platinum. The album was supported by an extensive tour of over 300 worldwide shows, including a headline show at the 2003 Vans Warped Tour, and opening for Avril Lavigne.

The band’s 2004 follow-up, entitled “Still Not Getting Any…” was produced by Bob Rock and represented a more mature, less teenage angst approach to songwriting. Charting at No. 3 on the Billboard 200, the album earned strong reviews from critics and spawned the singles “Welcome to My Life”, “Shut Up”, and “How Could This Happen to Me”. The band embarked on a tour of the world in support of the album until February 2006, before returning to the studio.

Recorded in Los Angeles, U.S., Montréal, and Miami, Simple Plan’s eponymously-titled third full-length album was released in February 2008. Featuring a more romantic aesthetic than its predecessor the album peaked at No. 2 on the Canadian Album Chart, and No. 14 on the U.S. Billboard 200. The record was produced by Dave Fortman, known for his work with Justin Timberlake and Timbaland, and spawned the singles “When I’m Gone”, “Your Love Is a Lie”, and “Save You”. The band’s subsequent tour saw the band travel to Tel Aviv, Dubai, Estonia, and Poland all for the first time, as well as dates across the U.S., Canada, and the UK.

Simple Plan’s fourth full-length album “Get Your Heart On!” was released in June 2011. Featuring Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo, Natasha Beddingfield, and Alex Gaskarth of All Time Low, the album equaled their highest-charting Canadian release, debuting at No. 2.

Live reviews

I started listening to Simple Plan when I was 12, and for many reasons I never had the opportunity to watch them live; i did spend however a huge amount of time watching their concerts online, and I loved them. So, when I saw they were coming to Paris as part of an European tour before the release of their new album I decided this was the perfect opportunity to watch men, given that they were playing in a really small and rather warm theater, I guessed the setlist had to be formed by almost all of their singles, and I was right.

The concert itself was amazing. The opening show was played by So Wasted, a little band from Switzerland that matched PERFECTLY the style of SP fans. They crowd was happy, and even if not many knew their song, everybody was following the tune and roaring for them.

Of course, Simple Plan came into scene and everything was Perfect, pun intended. I've seen shows way more animated I can say, Sebastien and David were rather silent, but they compensated by playing a huge amount of songs during two hours, almost non stop. Jeff brought his two kids, who were later throwing beach ball at us during "Summer Paradise": David spent around 2 minutes throwing bass picks to a girl in the crown because every time she failed to grab them; Sebastien stopped to take pictures to the crowd every once in a while and Pierre stopped the show to ask security to bring a girl whom was passing out to backstage. Furthermore, nearly the end of the show, Pierre read a message from a girl saying she wanted a selfie with the band, so he brought her on stage and all the band took a picture with her and the crowd to their backs.

I don't think there is much left to say. Amazing show, amazing band. I enjoyed every second of it. Never doubt to go to a Simple Plan concert.

Simple Plan are a far more influential band than they’re ever given credit for. Maybe it’s because the bands that owe an existential debt to the Montreal quintet aren’t the coolest but why should that matter? The fact remains that when it comes to the likes of All Time Low, We The Kings, We Are The In Crowd and Tonight Alive, it’s not quite that they would be nowhere without Simple Plan but their careers would definitely be in a very different place for damn sure. Still the fact remains that all of those bands and a lot more that I haven’t mentioned could still learn a lot from them in the live arena if nothing else. Simple Plan eschews the choreographed head banging, jumping and hairstyles of their predecessors and focus on a more honest connection with their audience. Lead singer Pierre Bouvier’s easy-going yet sincere banter with the audience shows their connection with them nearly as much as their precision tooled set lists, which consistently contain their biggest hits of the day with the deepest cuts from their back catalogue. This is all to say nothing of the whole bands natural chemistry; and truly in an age where pop-punk is making as stirring a comeback as it is, it would be a crime to miss out on one of the bands that truly perfected the art and influenced a generation of wide eyed fans to go out there and take on the world with nothing but a distorted power chord and a catchy hook.

Pierre Bouvier, Chuck Comeau, Jeff Stinco, Sébastien Lefebvre and David Desrosiers make up the Montreal rock outfit Simple Plan and have had a far more substantial impact on the modern alt/rock music scene than most people realise. Following the release of their debut album in 2002, the group took to the road almost immediately in order to test out their alt-punk/rock sounds on the masses and it is fair to say it went down very well indeed.

Fast forward over a decade later, and they still continue to tour with the same level of intent and dedication in order to reach their global fanbase. Their tongue in cheek lyrical style has gone on to inspire the likes of All Time Low and You Me At Six yet many cannot stand up to the lyrical intelligence of the music found on 'No Pads, No Helmets... Just Balls' which is chanted back in force by the loyal crowds. The band isn't particularly polished when performing, but the garage quality is endearing and a considered encore of 'Crazy' and 'Loser Of The Year' goes over particularly well the entire room.

This concert was simply amazing. They played the WHOLE album (No pads, no helmets... Just balls!) AND few others songs... Welcome to my life must be my favorite song ever and they did it! I was so fucking happy. It was awesome! I already want to see them again in live cause they are such a good band! We were all so sad David couldn't make it to the show but Pierre reassured us saying he was still a member of the band and always will. Jeff did his thing with the guitar, honestly this man must have superpowers or something cause he's playing guitar like a God! Sebastien was cute as hell, as usual. Chuck had his moment too: he jumped in the crowd and we carried him a little bit. It was extraordinary. Most of all, after what had happened in Bataclan, and what is still happening all over the world, us being gathered here, choosing to fight the fear, was such a powerful movement. It just made the whole show even more enjoyable and incredibly good. Music is stronger than anything : that's how they made me feel.

Last night with Simple Plan was amazing!!! One of the best moments in my life...

To meet them after the show was so exciting..and the guys were so cute.

I found incredible men behind the artists I always loved.

They thanked me so much for being a fan and I couldn't believe it, I was like "OK, why do they thank me?? I am the one who has to thank them"

And then I received so many hugs from them, and I felt they were sincere, not obliged to hug me but they really want to do that! I felt the incredible love they have for their fans so as they felt the love we have for them.

Amazing singers and beautiful people. Last night, when I met them for the first time in my life, was a dream coming true..I'll never thank them enough for everything they gave me in this years.

I hope to have the chance to meet them again soon. I love you Simple Plan!❤

I attended Simple Plan's concert, and it was fantastic. Lead vocalist Pierre Bouvier was in excellent form and had a great connection with the audience. They performed many of their biggest hits, including "Welcome to My Life," "I'd Do Anything," "Perfect," and more, all of which elicited enthusiastic sing-alongs from the crowd. I bought my tickets through TimeForGig.com, which was a hassle-free experience. The band's performance was energetic, and the visual effects were impressive. A great show overall!

The guys put on an amazing show last night. David threw one of his guitar picks right at me. Got the VIP post game package. The guys were super nice when meeting them and signing anything that their fans brought. Their photographer was just as nice allowing the fans to have more time with the group to make sure everyone meet them. Overall one of the best concerts I've gone too

I saw Simple Plan a few years ago on the Vans Warped tour and they definitely lived up to all of my childhood dreams of seeing them perform one day. They sound just as good live as they do in the studio or on an album. Their energy, charisma and stage presence were striking and so fun. I would see them again in a heartbeat.

Sum 41 announces Fall 2022 European Tour with special guest Simple Plan

Sum41 European Tour 2022 poster

The tour kicks off on September 20th in Stuttgart, DE and will be hitting cities like Paris, Vienna, Milan, Budapest. Artist pre-sale tickets go on sale on May 17th at 11am local time. All tickets will be on sale on May 20 at 10am local time. For a full list of dates and more information, click here .

“We’ve been having such a great time on our tour with Simple Plan in the States and cannot wait to bring the party over to Europe”, shares vocalist Deryck Whibley . “We’re so excited to celebrate the anniversaries of some of our favorite albums along with other hits and favorites with you on the ‘Does This Look All Killer No Filler’ tour!”.

In a recent exclusive interview with Rolling Stone, the band shared a first look at the details of their upcoming eighth studio album. Vocalist Deryck Whibley shared that the double album, titled “Heaven and Hell”, is shaping up to be the most ambitious of the band’s career – half of the album brings Sum 41 back to their pop punk roots, “Heaven”, and half of the album is strictly metal, “Hell”.

Looking back at the band’s storied 24+ year career with over 15 million records sold worldwide, multiple Billboard Charting releases, a Grammy Award nomination, 2 Juno Awards (7 nominations), a Kerrang! Award in 2002, as well as multiple Alternative Press Music Awards, Sum 41 is quite simply a rock band – uncompromising and honest with no intention of slowing down.

After traveling together this year to the United States for their “Blame Canada Tour”, Simple Plan, the multi-platinum band from Montreal, will be the special guest of “Does this look all killer no filler tour”. From their millennium rise to MTV superstar, through the modern renaissance of pop-punk that introduced some of their iconic sound to new fans around the world, the Canadian band have been indelible and prominent in the pop culture more than two decades and they have never lost sight of relationship with the fans over time. Simple Plan have been sold 10 million album worldwide, with numerous awards received around the world and performances in over 60 countries.

Simple Plan announce UK and European tour with State Champs, Mayday Parade

Simple Plan are returning to the UK and Europe for their Hard As Rock tour in 2024 – and they’re bringing State Champs and Mayday Parade with ’em!

Simple Plan announce UK and European tour with State Champs, Mayday Parade

Simple Plan have announced a 2024 UK and European headline tour.

The Canadian pop-punks’ upcoming Hard As Rock run will see them hit the road with State Champs and Mayday Parade (what a line-up!), kicking things off in Paris on January 19, and wrapping up in London on February 16. Even better, they’ll be donating $1 from every ticket sold to their Simple Plan Foundation, which ‘focuses on helping young people in need and showcasing the power of music as a tool to find purpose and direction in life’ – read more on that here .

“We’re super excited to be coming back to Europe and the UK early next year!” enthuses Simple Plan drummer Chuck Comeau. “After an amazing arena tour with our good friends Sum 41 last fall and some incredible festival shows this spring, we’re thrilled to come back on our own headlining tour, playing full shows for our UK and Euro fans all over the continent.”

“It’s gonna be great to play a bunch of new songs from our latest album Harder Than it Looks as well as all the fans’ favourites from our early records. We might even throw in a few jams we rarely play live to celebrate, as 2024 marks the 25th anniversary of the band and the 20th anniversary of our second album, Still Not Getting Any!

“We’re stoked to bring our friends State Champs and Mayday Parade with us, two fantastic bands that we and our fans love! This is probably one of the strongest UK / European tour line-up we’ve ever put together and we can’t wait for it to kick off next year!”

For the past decade State Champs have been a pop-punk mainstay, always with one eye on bigger things. Now that the scene is making a bid for the mainstream, is new album Kings Of The New Age their chance to break through? Frontman Derek Discanio thinks so, and he doesn’t care who knows it…

In an interview with Rolling Stone , Deryck Whibley explained why the band had decided to explore their heavier side.  “Some of the metal stuff comes with a lot of anger for people who have stolen from me and hurt me in the past,” he said, going on to cite bad relationships, friendships and even a former manager as inspiration for the songs.  Heaven And Hell is expected later this year, though the official release date is TBA.

Sum 41’s most recent album,  ‘Order In Decline’ , came out in 2019. Earlier this year, Whibley revealed that  the band had completed a new double record called ‘Heaven And Hell’ .

Speaking about the ‘Heaven’ half of the two-disc project, Whibley explained: “Some weird nostalgia kicked in because of the pandemic. A lot of other people were retreating to things that made them feel good in the past.

“It all made sense to me why pop-punk is coming back: it’s feel-good music. There’s something that’s happy about it. Something young and innocent and free.”

The band’s guitarist Dave ‘Brownsound’ Baksh recently revealed that he received treatment for a cancerous tumour , but said he is now cancer-free.

Sharing a lengthy message on Instagram, the musician told fans that he noticed a lump in March and had it checked out. “Within two weeks I went through surgery in order to get rid of a tumour that ended up being #cancer,” Baksh said.

Baksh concluded his post by asking his fans and followers to support him and his wife as they take part in the  Relay For Life  fundraising event on June 11.  You can make a donation here .

How to plan a Europe road trip: Top lessons learned from a seasoned driver

Larissa Milne

June 5, 2024 // By Larissa Milne

By Larissa Milne June 5, 2024

Remember the journey is the destination on your Europe road trip

There’s nothing like hitting the highway on a European road trip to get "in country," be it on a high-speed motorway or a narrow, winding country lane. My husband and I have explored Europe by car more than 20 times and experienced the joys and sometimes headaches of driving in foreign countries. Here, we share our tips on planning a Europe trip by car to help you make the most of your vacation.

Tips for renting a car for a European road trip

Pick up a rental car at a more remote location to avoid navigating busy cities

Do I need a driving permit when traveling Europe by car?

Some (but not all) European countries require you to have an International Driving Permit (IDP) when traveling around Europe by car. Check the International Travel Page of the U.S. Department of State's website, which provides information by country. You can obtain IDPs at your local AAA office (you needn’t be a member) or by mail.

We haven't always needed it, and some car rental agencies are stricter than others. Our policy is "better safe than sorry."

Advertisement Advertisement

Should I get a manual or automatic transmission?

Most rental vehicles in the U.K. and Europe are manual transmission. Cars with automatic transmission are more expensive to rent, adding to the cost of your European road trip. But this is not the time to learn if you don’t drive a stick shift at home. You don't want to be grinding gears and stalling out on the autobahn.

Do I need additional insurance?

Rental car insurance is expensive. Check what your home policies cover in advance (some credit cards may offer full or partial coverage) and adjust your rental coverage accordingly.

Inspect your rental car before you hit the road

It's often tempting to jump in the rental car and zoom off on your grand adventure. But inspecting your rental (and documenting any scratches and dings) before you depart protects you from getting charged for them later. You don't want to end your vacation on a sour note — or have this conversation in a language not native to you!

Additionally, take a moment to learn the location of headlights, wipers, hazard lights, and other safety features on your rental before starting your trip, so you won't have to fumble for them while driving unfamiliar roads.

Rent a car in a remote location

For our road trip in Norway, we started in Oslo. However, instead of picking up our car in that crowded city, we took the train to a suburban location and picked up our car there to explore the fjords. With fewer cars on the road, it was a less frenzied start to our journey.

Use a combination of printed maps and apps

Use a combination of old school and new school navigation tools when driving in Europe

Nothing ruins a European road trip like getting hopelessly lost. Depending on your destination, a GPS device in your rental car may be worth the price. We rely on a combination of GPS, apps, and paper maps for navigation. Old-school printed maps provide an overview of the area that a tiny screen can't manage and often highlight landmarks or scenic roads worth a detour.

Data connections can be spotty (and expensive) in remote areas, so download maps and directions before starting out for the day. Also, note that apps such as Google Maps might not be as accurate in Europe as in the U.S. — as we learned the hard way when it routed our car down a steep hiking trail in a German national park. Yikes!

Anticipate the costs of driving in Europe

Many European highways charge tolls. Sometimes, you can pay cash or credit as you go; other times, it's automated. Your rental car company can advise you on the best payment method. Also, fuel costs in Europe are approximately double that of the U.S., an important calculation to include in your Europe road trip planner. (Gas prices are listed per liter; multiply by 4 to approximate a per-gallon price.)

Other than avoiding toll roads, you can’t escape these costs. Consider it a necessary trip expense and enjoy your journey. Upon returning home, you’ll have a newfound appreciation for "low" gas prices in the United States.

Plan a general route in advance

Planning is key when it comes to a European road trip

Think about the sights you want to see and the type of road trip that makes the most sense for you. Making a large loop, going from point A to point B, or taking a series of day trips from a "home base" are all viable options. This may impact your rental car costs, lodging choices, and onward journey.

Be realistic about distances

American road trips conjure images of zipping through wide open spaces along the interstate. When exploring Europe by car, it's important to adjust your mindset to more densely populated countries with shorter distances (and those winding country lanes). You may not rack up thousands of miles, but you'll likely find charming towns and interesting sights more frequently.

Don't be caught "hangry"

Restaurants (even simple cafes) in many European small towns still observe traditional mealtime hours; don't count on finding something open at any random time of day. If you don't want to be tied to a rigid food schedule, pack a picnic lunch and a few nibbles to stave off grumbling stomachs and grumpy conversations.

The exception to this rule is rest stops on major motorways. These restaurants usually have flexible hours and serve up good food. When did you last see fresh salads and desserts served with china at a highway rest stop back home?

Know where you'll sleep

Whether you’re staying in a hotel, an RV, or a tent, make sure you've arranged for accommodations as part of your European road trip planning. Travelers are visiting Europe in record numbers post-COVID; you don't want to be stuck camping by a busy road or getting the last motel room next to a dumpster.

What is the best European road trip?

Visit charming villages, such as Meersburg, Germany, on a European road trip

The best European road trip depends on what interests you. If you're unsure where to start, here are some trips we've taken and loved.

Experience the Black Forest on a road trip through Germany

Enjoy a mixture of old and new with postcard scenery of the Black Forest's quaint half-timbered villages (and famous Black Forest cake!), while cruising the high-speed thrills of the autobahn. Make pitstops at the headquarters of Porsche and Mercedes-Benz . Vroom!

Best route : Start in Stuttgart or Munich outskirts.

Driving along the autostrada in Sicily during an Italy road trip

Explore Sicily on a road trip through Italy

Take a week or two to circumnavigate the island, visiting ancient Roman and Greek (!) ruins, the stunning Mount Etna volcano, and gorgeous beaches. Pizza, pasta, gelato, repeat.

Best route : Start and finish at Palermo Airport.

Tour Brittany on a road trip through France

Explore amazing Mont Saint-Michel, see dramatic coastlines with quaint harbor towns, and marvel at the prehistoric monoliths at Carnac, all while eating crepes and sipping cider.

Best route : Take the train from Paris to Rennes, then loop through the region.)

No matter where you choose to go on your Europe road trip, remember that the journey is the destination; indulge your curiosity. It’s the little detours and unscheduled stops that make the trip fun.

Blinken Travels to Eastern Europe as Russia Presses War in Ukraine

Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken aims to show support for Moldova, which is under threat from Russia, and plans to attend a NATO meeting in the Czech Republic.

  • Share full article

Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken, with his hand raised to his mouth.

By Edward Wong

Reporting from Washington

Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken plans to spend this week showing U.S. support for nations facing a hostile Russia in visits to Moldova and the Czech Republic, where he is scheduled to attend a meeting of NATO foreign ministers that will discuss how to bolster Ukraine.

Mr. Blinken, who made an overnight stop in Kyiv more than two weeks ago, flew into Chisinau, the capital of Moldova, on Wednesday to meet with Maia Sandu, the nation’s president, who is running for re-election. Ms. Sandu has advocated for Moldova to join the European Union, and she has scheduled a referendum vote on E.U. membership on the same day as the general election in October.

She is expected to run against a pro-Russia candidate, and U.S. and European analysts say Moscow is likely to try to interfere in the election, as it has in other votes in Europe. The Biden administration has spoken publicly of Russian agents carrying out such interference using a variety of means, from hacking to boosting campaigns over social networks to doling out money to favored politicians.

U.S. officials said Mr. Blinken would speak with Ms. Sandu and other top officials about potential threats to the country’s democratic processes, as well as efforts to wean the nation off electricity generated in the pro-Russia separatist region of Transnistria. Moldova recently ended its reliance on gas imports from Russia.

“I anticipate he’ll have a robust package of support for Moldova’s transition, both energy independence or less dependence on sources to the east but also on support for democracy against Russian threats,” James O’Brien, the assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian Affairs, said in a phone call with reporters on Friday.

Mr. Blinken plans to announce more details of American aid to address these issues during his visit, Mr. O’Brien said.

He added that the secretary’s message would “highlight Moldova’s progress in its path toward European integration, its solidifying its democracy, and the threat posed by the Russian interference in its internal processes.”

About 1,500 Russian troops are in Transnistria, which is in the east of Moldova and borders Ukraine. U.S. officials are watching closely for any signs that President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia might try to annex the territory. Russia officially says it seeks a special status for Transnistria.

In the Czech Republic, which State Department officials now call Czechia, following the lead of the country’s government, Mr. Blinken plans to attend a two-day planning session of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and meet with Czech officials.

The NATO session in Prague, the nation’s capital, is aimed at preparing for the 80th anniversary meeting of alliance leaders in Washington in July. The group is not expected to declare that Ukraine is joining NATO now, an aspiration that President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated repeatedly both before and after Russia’s full-scale invasion, which began in 2022. However, NATO officials in Prague are expected to work out the details for a substantial show of support for Ukraine’s progress toward joining NATO, and those will be announced in July, Mr. O’Brien said.

Russian troops are pressing an offensive in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city. The Ukrainian war effort has been flagging in large part because of a shortage of weapons and munitions, and there are fewer citizens able to join the fight. President Biden recently signed into law a bill passed by Congress, despite some Republican opposition, that grants new tranches of military aid to Ukraine, as well as to Israel.

However, Russia is producing munitions at a rapid rate, and U.S.-led sanctions against the nation have not crippled its military industrial capabilities, as Americans officials had once hoped. Mr. Biden and his aides say China has played a decisive role in bolstering Russia through the sale of dual-use equipment and other exports that have allowed Moscow to strengthen weapons production. Mr. Blinken is expected to highlight China’s support for Russia in his discussions with NATO counterparts in Prague.

An earlier version of this article misstated the country that borders Transnistria. It is Ukraine, not Russia.

News and Analysis

President Biden observed the 80th anniversary of D-Day on the beaches of Normandy by asserting that the allied effort to stand up to Russia  is a direct extension of the battle for freedom that raged across Europe during World War II.

President Vladimir Putin of Russia warned that Western nations supplying Ukraine with long-range missiles and allowing them to be used to attack inside Russia could prompt Moscow to reciprocate against Western targets .

The decision by the Biden administration to allow Ukraine to strike inside Russia  with American-made weapons fulfills a long-held wish by officials in Kyiv  that they claimed was essential to level the playing field.

Zelensky Interview: In an interview with The New York Times, President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine challenged the West  over its reluctance to take bolder action.

Tug of War:  Fueled in part by the Ukraine war, tensions have been mounting in former Soviet states like Georgia and Moldova , pitting those favoring closer relations with Russia against those orientated more toward Europe.
