The New Star Tours Update: Everything You Need, and Want, to Know

Characters from the mandalorian, ahsoka, and andor are now part of the legendary disney attraction..

Cassian Andor, Ahsoka Tano, and the Mandalorian with Grogu on Star Tours.

Before Disney bought Star Wars , the two brands began their courtship with a ride . Star Tours opened in 1987 and has seen many new upgrades and additions over the years . This week, for its Season of the Force event , Disney gave the ride another refresh. And this time, for the first time, it’s with characters from Disney+.

Related Content

So, starting today, if you are at Disneyland, Walt Disney World, or Disneyland Paris, Star Tours now features characters from Ahsoka, Andor and The Mandalorian . But what’s new? How does it work? io9 was among a group of journalists Disney invited to an early preview of the new Star Tours at Disneyland in Anaheim, so we’ll explain.

How many new Star Tours locations are there?

Though you may have assumed otherwise, only one new, full planet has been added to Star Tours this time around: Seatos from Ahsoka. However, there are three different variations going into that. One featuring Ahsoka (with Rosario Dawson reprising the role), one featuring Cassian Andor (with Diego Luna reprising), and one featuring both the Mandalorian and Grogu.

What can happen on the new Star Tours ?

So, you get on the ride and start to pull out of the spaceport. Here’s where, potentially, your first new change will be. In the past, riders would usually see the Millennium Falcon sitting there as the ship was stopped by Darth Vader, Kylo Ren, or a Probe Droid. And while that’s still more likely to happen than not, if you happen to see a new ship there, you know exactly where this particular ride will take you.

Yes, in some Star Tours rides not only is Ahsoka Tano’s T-6 Jedi Shuttle in the first scene, you can see Ahsoka herself there in the frame. She’s talking to Stormtroopers and, when they discover the Rebel spy, Ahsoka turns on her lightsabers and battles off the troopers before jumping in the ship.

If you see that, you can impress your friends and tell them what’s going to happen next. After you visit one of many, many planets that were previously on the ride (I did it twice on Friday and both times it was podracing on Tatooine from Episode I ), you’ll then get one of the three new transmissions. However, if you got Ahsoka’s ship at the start, you are guaranteed to get Ahsoka in this moment. She’ll say “Hi” to C-3PO, and be excited to see her friend R2-D2 again, before asking to deliver a very important person—the Rebel spy. As she’s talking, we see Chopper and Huyang in the background, getting into shenanigans.

Image for article titled The New Star Tours Update: Everything You Need, and Want, to Know

What are the two other transmissions?

These transmissions is the part of this new Star Tours that will be the most random. If you don’t get Ahsoka, maybe you’ll get the Mandalorian and Grogu. As Mando (who does not sound like it’s Pedro Pascal but we’ve asked Disney for confirmation) talks about a dangerous mission and fight, Grogu is eating one of his frogs. He then spits it out and it floats toward your face in 3D. It’s very cute and funny and just as the one-eyed creature gets close enough to almost touch it, Grogu sucks him back in. “This is the way,” Mando says, and you’re off to the final part of your mission.

Note: unfortunately, we didn’t get to see Cassian’s transmission but, from what we were told, it’s very different tonally than the other two, on purpose. While Ahsoka’s is friendly and Mando’s is funny, Cassian’s is mysterious. He comes out in a hood, lurking in a shadow, then reveals himself to the audience and asks for help with the spy. The key was that each one feels completely unique.

What happens on Seatos?

No matter what transmission you get though, everything is the same after that. Star Tours is off to Seatos, the planet from the final episodes of Ahsoka where they showdown with Thrawn. You arrive in some kind of shadow, only to emerge from the clouds flying among the majestic Purrgil (aka Space Whales). Ahsoka hails you on the side monitor and asks for help with the two ships attacking her, which R2 is more than happy to do. You fly up and around the Purrgil, along their backs, weaving in and out of its fins, and at one point almost even getting sucked in and eaten. Finally, there’s a perfect moment, which R2 uses to land the perfect shot and save the day. Ashoka thanks you, has a special goodbye for her old pal R2, and it’s back home.

Image for article titled The New Star Tours Update: Everything You Need, and Want, to Know

Are the new additions to Star Tours good?

Yes and no. Yes, because anytime you can get to sit down and experience a new piece of Star Wars , especially on a ride that’s been around for almost 40 years, that’s a good thing. However, do I think Seatos as a planet is one of the better destinations in the ride? No. In fact, it may be one of my least favorites. It’s drastically lacking in drama compared to, say, Geonosis, Coruscant, or Naboo. But Ahsoka is great and it’s fun to follow a different ship around.

Oh, and the new transmissions (at least the ones we saw) were phenomenal. Much more detailed and eventful than the previous ones.

How long is the new ride happening?

“For a limited time” everyone who boards Star Tours will get the new planet of Seatos every time, as well as one of the new transmissions. Whether or not that’s just through the Season of the Force event or longer is unclear, and Disney wouldn’t commit to specifics. It might be a park to park decision. But, for at least a few weeks or months, if you go on Star Tours , you’ll get the new stuff.

Then, eventually, the three new transmissions and one new planet will be slotted into the ride’s randomizer. When that happens, it takes the number of possible combinations up to over 250.

Why Seatos over anything else?

In the last few years, thanks to Disney+, Star Wars has seen more new planets, characters, and creatures than ever. So why Seatos and the Purrgil? Well, Tom Fitzgerald, one of Star Tours ’ original Imagineers—who also worked on this one —said it was all about picking a planet that was different from all the others. Something unique. Maybe that’s colors or maybe, in this case, it’s a unique creature. So by choosing Seatos, not only do you get to see these massive, new, unique creatures, but those creatures allow the ride to do moves it’s never done before. That’s how we get the first barrel roll ever in Star Tours as well as a sequence he refers to as the “slalom ski run.”

Image for article titled The New Star Tours Update: Everything You Need, and Want, to Know

How long did the new upgrade take?

Fitzgerald said he and his team first started working on these new additions sometime between 18 months and two years ago.

Could another ride get this treatment?

Since Disney bought Lucasfilm in 2012, Star Tours has been updated about every two or three years. This update is the first since 2019 though—so it makes you wonder, what’s next? And, will it even be Star Tours ?

When Galaxy’s Edge opened in 2019, Disney said that the Millennium Falcon ride, Smugglers Run , was designed in a similar fashion to Star Tours and that the actual visuals in the ride could be changed to take guests on new adventures. But now, that ride has been the same for five years. Could a change be coming? Unfortunately, no one from Imagineering or Lucasfilm would comment, confirm, or deny—but, fingers crossed.

The Ahsoka, Andor and Mandalorian additions to Star Tours: The Adventures Continue are now running at Disneyland, Hollywood Studios, and Disneyland Paris as part of the Season of the Force event. For more on that, check out this link.

Video: guests improvise sound effects when the audio stops on this disney ride.

Posted by: Brittany DiCologero July 25, 2022

Star Tours

One sign of a true Disney fan is knowing all of the spiels and sound effects of favorite theme park attractions by heart. In most instances, reciting spiels and sounds is frowned upon as many fans prefer to hear the intended audio without other Guests speaking over it. On a recent ride to a “galaxy far, far away,” however, Guests came through with their own audio making for a truly unique Disney ride experience .

Star Tours – The Adventures Continue is an action-packed 3-D motion-simulator attraction that takes Guests on an adventurous journey to multiple settings from within the Star Wars universe at both Disney’s Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World and Disneyland Park .

Star Tours

The ride comes complete with memorable Star Wars characters , including droid C-3PO as your unintentional captain, R2-D2, Princess Leia, Finn, Rey, and more, along with iconic sound effects and thrilling movements like jumps to lightspeed.

What happens when the audio cuts on this popular Disney attraction, though? During one recent ride at Disneyland, Guests took over! Take a look at the video below shared by @monicanotgeller1 on TikTok:

@__all_panic_no_disco Everyone passed the vibe check #disneyland #disney #starwars #startours #healthadepopit #fyp #foryou #foryoupage ♬ original sound – MB

Each ride on Star Tours is unique as it is, since Guests have the opportunity to experience a number of locations like Hoth, Naboo, Tattooine, and more, and Guests can even find themselves in the middle of some galactic conflict like the battle at Exegol, just to name a few.

With improvised sound effects, this ride on Star Tours is perhaps one of the most unique we’ve seen, and it looks like a fun way to make the most of an otherwise less-than-magical situation.

Star Tours - The Adventures Continue

Credit: Disney

While Star Wars : Galaxy’s Edge is now open at both Disneyland and Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Star Tours – The Adventures continue remains a favorite attraction among fans, so we loved seeing these improvised sound effects!

Disney’s official description of Star Tours – The Adventures Continue reads:

Board your Starspeeder 1000 and prepare for take off! When a series of mishaps unwittingly causes your starship to launch too soon, protocol droid C-3PO takes the controls. Suddenly, the ship is intercepted by Imperial—or First Order—forces searching for a Rebel spy. To avoid capture, you’ll embark on a thrilling, unpredictable flight that rockets you to the farthest reaches of the galaxy. Featuring a flight simulator, digital 3D video, Audio-Animatronics characters and “in-cockpit” special effects and music, this attraction immerses you in the Star Wars mythology for an unforgettable intergalactic adventure.

Star Tours often has a much shorter line than the Star Wars attractions on Batuu, so we always recommend a ride for Star Wars fans visiting Disney Parks. Enjoy your spin around the galaxy on your next Disney trip, and if the sound happens to stop, you know what to do!

This article is about the character from the Star Tours attraction. For the clone captain, see Rex (Star Wars) .

RX-24 , later R-3X , and also known simply as "Rex" , is a character from the Star Wars franchise, first introduced in 1987 as the Audio-Animatronic protagonist of Disneyland 's Star Tours attraction. He is depicted as an RX-series pilot droid who works for the Star Tours travel company, where he pilots a StarSpeeder 3000 spacecraft.

Rex later appeared in the attraction's prequel, Star Tours: The Adventures Continue . Set roughly 5 years before the timeline of the original attraction, Rex appears here as a newly-delivered, yet malfunctioning, droid in the attraction's queue.

Rex's appearances in the Star Tours attractions are not considered part of the main Star Wars canon , but are instead considered part of the Star Wars Legends continuity. Rex was officially introduced into official Star Wars canon with his 2014 appearance in Star Wars Rebels , where he works as a pilot droid for Garel Interstellar Excursions . Some time after this appearance, he gained employment with Star Tours, where he would later crash land on the planet Batuu , and be reprogrammed into DJ R-3X, the house DJ of Oga's Cantina .

Rex's voice was portrayed by the late Paul Reubens in all of his appearances.

Background [ ]

Rex appeared as the pilot in the original Star Tours attraction. Much like all droids of the RX series, Rex has a talkative and friendly attitude, and focuses more on his guest interaction than the safety and the schedule of the flight. In the original attraction, a red REMOVE BEFORE FLIGHT ribbon hangs from Rex's torso, which may serve to explain Rex's tendency to malfunction and bumbling nature.

Rex was the love interest of ROX-N, a feminine-programmed droid that worked at the L'Astroport Services Interstellaires – a story element that appeared only in the Disneyland Paris iteration of the original attraction.

Appearances [ ]

Legends continuity [ ], star tours [ ].

In 4.3 ABY , Rex is tasked with his first flight with Star Tours: ST-45, also known as the "Endor Express". The flight went wrong almost immediately. Whilst preparing his StarSpeeder 3000 for takeoff, Rex took a wrong turn and proceeded to fly himself and his 40 passengers into the spaceport's maintenance bay, narrowly managing to steer up and out into space. He then instructed R2-D2 to make the hyperspace jump to the flight's intended destination: the forest moon of Endor .

However, StarSpeeder overshot its target, careening past Endor and into a comet field, with Rex having to escape by flying directly through one of the comets. After safely escaping, Rex prepared to make the turn around back to Endor, he and his passengers found themselves in the midst of a battle between the Galactic Empire and Rebel Alliance, where the StarSpeeder was caught in a tractor beam of an Imperial Star Destroyer .

A Rebel Alliance X-wing starfighter squadron made contact with the StarSpeeder, helping them break free of the tractor beam and then escorted Rex's StarSpeeder through their attack on an Imperial Death Star space station. Rex assisted the Rebels, using the StarSpeeder's laser cannons to destroy several Imperial TIE Fighters . The Rebels lead Rex down the Death Star trench, where one of their ships manage to destroy the Death Star by firing two proton torpedoes into the space station's thermal exhaust port . As the Death Star exploded, the Rebel squadron and the StarSpeeder jumped into hyperspace, with Rex piloting the StarSpeeder back to Star Tours' spaceport. Seemingly out of danger, Rex then narrowly avoided colliding with a fuel truck upon landing. Rex apologized to his passengers as they prepared to disembark, excusing himself on the basis that it "was [his] first flight, and [he's] still getting used to [his] programming."

Star Tours: The Adventures Continue [ ]

Set roughly five years before the events of the original Star Tours , Rex appears in the queue for Star Tours: The Adventures Continue , alongside several other newly-delivered RX-series pilot droids. The RX-series droids are seemingly intended to replace the contemporary AC-series pilot droids that Star Tours employed at the time. However, the RX-series droids in the queue are not quite ready for flight – they are marked with "DEFECTIVE – RETURN TO FACTORY" labels. Rex himself is malfunctioning, attempting to speak to the passengers that pass by him in the queue, and foreshadowing his future misadventures seen in the original attraction.

Former RX-24 Audio-Animatronics appear as various RX-series droids in the queue area of Star Tours: The Adventures Continue in the droid customs scene. The attraction, set several years before the events of the original Star Tours attraction, depicts the RX-series droids as newly-delivered to the Star Tours agency, which has marked them defective. One of these former Audio-Animatronics figures is actually RX-24, malfunctioning and randomly repeating his dialogue from the original attraction (plus one new line of dialogue in which he says he has technical difficulties). In the Tokyo Disneyland version of the attraction, another RX-series droid appears as a hitchhiking droid .

During the development of Star Tours: The Adventures Continue, RX-24 was still supposed to be a part of the ride, instead of C-3PO, who filled his role.

Canon appearances [ ]

Star wars rebels [ ].

RX-24 appears in the Star Wars Rebels episode " Droids in Distress ", voiced once again by Paul Reubens , who is famous for the portrayal of the character Pee-Wee Herman . RX-24's appearance in Rebels is the first official appearance in Star Wars canon .

In 5 BBY, he flies Star Commuter 2000 shuttle ST-45 for Garel Interstellar Excursions from Lothal to Garel. When passengers Ezra Bridger and Chopper are fighting, Maketh Tua asks for the Astromech droids to remain with her, but RX-24 corrects her, citing Imperial law by stating all traveling droids ride in the back of the craft, including Maketh's interpreter C-3PO .

Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge [ ]

After his employment with Garel Interstellar Excursions, RX-24 was hired as a pilot droid for the Star Tours travel agency. Some time later, he crash landed on Batuu , where he was reprogrammed and upgraded by Mubo at the Droid Depot in Black Spire Outpost. He was officially redesignated R-3X (or Rex for short), and given to Oga Garra, the proprietor of Oga's Cantina . Oga then employed Rex as the cantina's house DJ during the events of the war between the First Order and the Resistance .

Oga's Cantina serves as a bar at Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge , a themed land at Disneyland that opened on May 31, 2019. An identical version of Galaxy's Edge (and Oga's Cantina with it) is set to open on August 29, 2019, at Disney's Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World . Rex is again voiced in these appearances by Paul Reubens.

Other appearances [ ]

Jock lindsey's hangar bar [ ].

In Jock Lindsey's Hangar Bar in Disney Springs is the airplane code, "RXE 2-4" used on a salvaged airplane, referencing Rex. He is one of several Star Wars characters alluded to in this way.

Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant [ ]

Storyboards of RX-24 and Star Tours decorate this restaurant in Disney's Hollywood Studios.

Wiki

  • Rex's poor flight skills may be due to a transparent red ribbon hanging from his body reading "REMOVE BEFORE FLIGHT."
  • Rex made a cameo in Disney Sing Along Songs: Disneyland Fun in the Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah song where guests explore the Star Tours attraction.
  • His look inspired the design of AC-38 , a droid from Star Tours: The Adventures Continue.
  • In the queue line of the original attraction, the announcer proclaims that the new RX droids are the newest, safest, and most advanced pilot droids in the galaxy. In Star Tours: The Adventures Continue. it was further revealed that this was a lie or exaggeration as the Star Tours company bought him from a shipment of defective RX units.
  • Rex utters Pee-wee Herman's iconic laugh several times during the attraction, and also utters a similar scream. He also says "I meant to do that", which is what Pee-wee said after it looked like he fell off his bike while imitating a BMX stunt in Pee-wee's Big Adventure .
  • Rex went through several personality changes during the attraction's development. At first, he was conceived as a witty tour guide. Later, he was conceived as a brazen veteran-a deranged and broken-down droid left over from the Clone Wars named "Crazy Harry".
  • In Oga's Cantina, Rex mentions the Star Tours droid, Aly San San , and saying that "she was the droid he was looking for", implying that they are in a relationship together.
  • He formerly shared the same name and title as the clone soldier from the Star Wars: The Clone Wars TV show.
  • RX droids were created by Reubens Robotics Systems in the Star Wars ''Legends'' lore, an allusion to Paul Reubens who voiced Rex. The Star Wars Rebels novel Head to Head later established Industrial Automaton as the manufacturer of RX droids in official Star Wars canon.
  • He is credited as compiler of Oga's Cantina: R3X's Playlist 1 , a album compiling music from Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge .

Nathy Peluso talks 'Grasa' album, pushing herself to 'be daring' even if it's scary

star tours sound

Nathy Peluso was caught in a whirlwind, but now she’s found her center.

The Argentinian-Spanish songstress burst onto the Latin music scene in 2020 with the release of her debut album “Calambre,” a sonically daring LP that saw Peluso introduce her genre-bending style with a seamless fusion of alternative hip-hop and neo soul.

The album earned the 29-year-old a Latin Grammy for best alternative music album, as well as nominations for best rap/hip-hop song (“Sana Sana”) and best alternative song (“Agarrate”), in 2021. That same year, Peluso scored collaborations with Colombian superstar Karol G and pop powerhouse Christina Aguilera on “Gato Malo” and “ Pa Mis Muchachas ,” respectively.

And to top it off, Peluso was invited to play at Coachella 2022 , joining a star-studded lineup that included Swedish House Mafia and The Weeknd , Doja Cat , Karol G and M aggie Rogers .

Looking back, Peluso calls the album “a great training.”

“I was growing and learning at the same time that I was working in the public eye,” Peluso tells USA TODAY in Spanish. “It’s hard, it’s intense, it puts you to the test and it really changed my life because it validated that what I was doing was right and that I was on the path I needed to be on.”

Danna interview: 'Elite' star talks making 'peace' with early fame, why she quit acting for music

Peluso is back with her sophomore effort “Grasa” (streaming at 8 p.m. May 23), an album that chronicles the singer’s healing journey of rediscovering herself. The album’s title, which can mean “oil grease,” “tacky,” “fat” or “low-class” depending on the context, represents the resilient mindset she’s honed.

“They all apply to something quite rough (and) strong, and that was a feeling I was looking for in the title,” Peluso says. “But in truth, I chose it precisely so people can choose what meaning remains with them after hearing the album or create a new one.”

Nathy Peluso talks eclectic sound on ‘Grasa,’ her love of salsa music

Similar to the musical variety on “Calambre,” Peluso draws from an eclectic palette of sounds on “Grasa,” alternating between gruff hip-hop beats and ethereal minimalist ballads.

Peluso, a self-described “big music lover,” says this range of influences comes naturally as a songwriter. “I change a lot and travel a lot through music, through the different periods, styles and intentions,” she says.

“Listening to Chopin is not the same as listening to Notorious B.I.G. They’re different feelings, and that’s life itself,” Peluso says. “Depending on how you feel, you can choose what side of music to stop at. That to me is a privilege, and that’s always been my style of composing: (writing with) freedom and with a respect for all the genres and roots in music and always trying to create fusions.”

One of the album’s standout tracks, “La Presa,” pays homage to the sonic warmth of classic salsa music and includes an appearance by renowned salsa orchestra El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico . Peluso gushes that singing salsa is one of her “best pleasures” as a vocalist.

“You feel free, you feel fun,” Peluso says of the tropical genre. “It’s one of my favorite areas of music, and I always use it to uplift, to fly. Moreover, El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico gave us their blessing and they play on the chorus, which is the best thing that could happen to the song.”

How ‘Grasa’ helped Nathy Peluso follow her artistic intuition, find self-love

The making of “Grasa” required Peluso to harness her inner voice to find the album’s musical perspective. Despite having the itch to put out music soon after the release of “Calambre,” Peluso made the tough decision to scrap a batch of over 20 songs she’d been working on because the material wasn’t resonating with her.

“In those moments, you have to be guided by your intuition and genuinely listen to what your heart is telling you,” Peluso says. “I hadn’t put out music in a while, and I had the pressure of wanting to share with my fans and the pressure of a lot of other things.

“I’m always going to encourage people to do that, to listen to themselves and be daring — even if it scares you,” Peluso adds. “Because when you’re searching for the answer, you have to feel it.”

'Inspiration was to heal': Latin rapper Nicki Nicole bares soul on vulnerable album 'Alma'

In starting over, Peluso was able to craft a more diaristic style of writing that draws from the singer’s personal life. But as “Grasa” makes its way into the world, this vulnerability doesn’t intimidate Peluso.

“It feels freeing,” Peluso says. “It’s all about sharing it: to throw a message into the world, to communicate, to generate conversations among people to keep learning. That’s our task as artists.”

One sentiment Peluso is eager to impart is the importance of self-love, as heard on the album’s second song “Aprender a Amar,” a slamming Latin hip-hop track that’s softened by a lyrical reminder to love oneself. “The way you love yourself is the way you’re going to love the world,” she says.

“Like any woman and any human being, I’ve had moments where I’ve doubted myself or haven’t felt so proud or I’ve been very hard on myself, and by working a lot on myself internally, I’ve been able to feel more at peace with my self-love, so I’m happy,” she adds.

Nathy Peluso talks ‘Grasa’ tour, impact of album

Last week, Peluso introduced fans to the visual world of “Grasa” with the music video for “Aprender a Amar,” a frenetic clip that sees Peluso have an intense heart-to-heart with herself in the mirror.

The singer says this bold aesthetic will be taken up a notch for her upcoming tour.

“Performance is one of the most important parts of my career,” Peluso says. “Every song already has an embodied setting and character, as seen with the album visualizers. That’s definitely going to be taken to another level for people on tour, and it’s going to be very strong.”

And just like Peluso will travel the world to perform on tour, Peluso hopes “Grasa” migrates with listeners throughout the seasons of their lives.

“I hope this album accompanies people and forms a small part of the history of their lives, the same way many albums have done for me,” Peluso says. “Something that you can remember and that transports you to a moment in your life, a feeling (or) something that can guide you and help you.”
