The inside story

Take a step inside Nashville’s oldest music recording studio: RCA Studio B. This historic studio is famous for birthing the distinctive ‘Nashville Sound’ style of country music and producing many chart-topping songs during its 20-year operation from 1957 to 1977.

RCA Studio B is fittingly located in Nashville’s Music Row district. It’s at this studio where celebrated Country Music Hall of Fame artists such as Elvis Presley, Dolly Parton, and Waylon Jennings, among others, recorded several of their iconic hits.

Any country music aficionado simply must make a stop at RCA Studio B. The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum offers daily tours to the studio so you can hear the stories behind the country music songs produced here.

Tours for RCA Studio B are offered through the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. The facility was donated to the museum in the 1990s and now the only way to visit is by purchasing a separate ticket and taking their shuttle from downtown. You’ll meet by the designated sign in the Hall of Fame lobby near the front door and have your tickets checked by an attendant shortly before your scheduled departure.

The experience lasts about an hour. The shuttle will take you to the RCA Studios building and you’ll begin with listening to your tour guide share some history and interesting stories. You’ll sample some of the music recorded here – mostly oldies and some country favorites. Dolly Parton recorded I Will Always Love You and Jolene here, Charley Pride recorded Don’t Take Her, She’s All I’ve Got. In recent years, the studio has seen use by artists like Carrie Underwood, Marty Stuart, and Martina McBride. The tour guide claimed that RCA Studio B has produced more hit songs than any other recording studio – though I can’t verify that’s technically correct.

studio b tours nashville

You’ll make your way with the rest of the group down the small hallway to watch a short film that shows the Studio B being used in the 1950s. You’ll learn about the “X” on the floor (that you’ll eventually walk over when you enter the studio) that marks the spot in the room where the vocal sounds are perfect. This is where the singer would stand during a session while musicians would gather in other areas of the room.

Your time in Studio B is pretty limited. As I mentioned, the entire experience – including the shuttle ride – only lasts about an hour. If you want to get a leg up on other guests – make sure you position yourself near the front so you’ll have time to take a photo at the piano Elvis Presley used during his recordings. It was apparently his favorite piano and you’re able to sit on the bench and pose for a photo.

Elvis was the reason the studio has an interesting mix of lighting fixtures on the ceiling. You’ll see the various colors and a control switch can change the color depending on the mood of the song. The guide mentioned Elvis sometimes would record in complete darkness. You’ll get a sample of that as well.

studio b tours nashville

While I wish the tours would be a bit more intimate (as in not so many people in one group) it’s still a cool experience and I recommend doing it if you have the time. There aren’t many historic recording studios still standing that are open to the public for tours.

Tours book quickly so you’ll want to grab yours ahead of time. You can book through the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum website .

Military Experiences

studio b tours nashville

This itinerary, created especially for military groups, begins on world-famous “Music Row” with a guided tour of Historic RCA Studio B, Nashville’s most legendary studio, and one of the most important and successful studios in the world. Opened in 1957, RCA Studio B has produced more than 35,000 songs, over 1,000 top ten hits, and 262 recordings by Elvis Presley. Following the tour, your group will be assembled “choir-style” to record your military branch song. At the end of the recording we will have each member of the group step to that famous microphone to state his name and rank, which will be included at the end of your recording. All of your participants will then have their buddy’s voices on CD forever, as a one-of-a-kind keepsake.

The second leg of this itinerary will bring your group to tour the incredible Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. Country music has long had a special kinship with the United States military. From the plaintive ballads of World War II that often lamented soldiers being separated from their families, like Kitty Wells’ “Heartbreak USA,” to the rousing “Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue” by Toby Keith, penned following the attacks on September 11, 2001, country music has always represented the feelings and sacrifice of the American soldier. The Museum is a world-class facility featuring thousands of priceless artifacts, theater experiences, live music, a full-service restaurant, and the best variety of souvenirs, apparel, and music in the city.

We appreciate your service to our country, and we will strive to make this an experience you will never forget.

The process of group songwriting requires creativity and communication, leadership and compromise, all to reach a shared goal. In this special team-building program, join one of Music City’s most accomplished songwriters for an hour-long session on the craft of songwriting. By offering personal insight and direction, the writer guides your group in creating an original song. This entertaining and highly interactive program promotes group problem solving while exploring corporate ideals and goals in the creation of an original “Company Song.” Once written, your team will rehearse and record their new song and everyone will receive a CD copy of their new “team” accomplishment.
