5 sunny vacation destinations to dream about on this freezing winter day

Andrea M. Rotondo

Across the country this week, there have been back-to-back winter storms. And our friends in Texas have been walloped by the bitter cold, snow and ice storms, and have lost both power and, in some cases, water. The bad news is the forecast remains cold in much of the United States for the next few days.

If you're bundled up at home, grumbling about this winter weather, we invite you to dream about your next fabulous vacation to a warm and sunny destination when the cold -- and pandemic -- breaks.

If you're tired of drab, dark and snowy landscapes, set your future travel dreams on Marrakesh.

In western Morocco , you'll find the medina -- a medieval walled city — that's beguiling. You can stay in luxury hotels or raids (traditional accommodations) within the medina or just outside one of its 19 gates.

Visit the palaces and mosques, gardens and colorful souks (marketplaces). If you appreciate art and architecture, this is the place for you. You'll see Moorish-style buildings with intricate tilework as well as incredible painted ceilings, carved wood and fine stucco finishings.

And the food! Local dishes are made with fragrant spices such as cumin, saffron, paprika, ginger, turmeric, nutmeg and coriander. Be sure to try regional specialties such as tajine (slow-cooked stew), couscous (a rice-like dish made with durum wheat semolina), rfissa (chicken and lentils with spices), harira (a soup) and skewered grilled meats.

How to get there: You won't find any nonstop flights from the United States to Marrakech (RAK), but you can connect in a variety of cities, including London (British Airways), Paris (AirFrance), Frankfurt and Munich (Lufthansa), Lisbon (TAP) or Madrid (Iberia).

Where to stay on points:

French Polynesia

sunny time travel

Oftentimes, a frequent flyer plans a trip to French Polynesia -- usually the Society Islands of Tahiti, Moorea and Bora Bora -- thinking it will be a once-in-a-lifetime getaway. But the South Pacific is so beautiful and remote that many of us plan repeat trips . It's the type of place that helps repair the soul, and we may all need a bit of that after this pandemic is over.

It's a long-haul trip to Papeete, Tahiti, from anywhere in the United States, so plan to spend at least a week on the islands. Fly to Tahiti (PPT) and stay a day or two as a salve for your jetlag. Tahiti is also the embarkation port for cruises from Paul Gauguin Cruises, Windstar Cruises and other lines.

If you don't plan to go on a cruise, most travelers move on from Papeete to some of the other islands in the region. Bora Bora with its imposing Mount Otemanu as a backdrop, many motus and overwater bungalows is a popular destination -- especially with honeymooners. You'll need to take a flight from Papeete to get there.

Adventurous travelers tend to select Moorea for activities like the hike to Belvedere Lookout or the four-wheel-drive tour up Magic Mountain.

How to get there: Your gateway to all of French Polynesia is Papeete, Tahiti (PPT). You can fly there from Los Angeles on Air France or Air Tahiti Nui, from San Francisco on United or French Bee or from Honolulu on Hawaiian Airlines.

Learn how to find award flights to Tahiti and the best ways to use miles and points for a French Polynesian vacation .

  • In Tahiti, use 50,000 IHG points per night for the InterContinental Hotels Resort Tahiti . On Bora Bora, you have two options: the InterContinental Hotels Le Moana Bora Bora (from 50,000 points per night) or the InterContinental Hotels Bora Bora Resort Thalasso Spa . (We couldn't find any availability at this property through January of 2023. Your mileage may vary.)
  • If you have Hilton Honors points, you can use them at the Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort & Spa (starting at 80,000 points per night) or on Bora Bora at the Conrad Bora Bora Nui (starting at 89,000 points per night). The Hilton Tahiti Resort also opens in July 2021.
  • There are two Marriott Bonvoy options on Bora Bora: Le Meridien Bora Bora (Category 7, from 60,000 points per night on standard dates) and the St. Regis Bora Bora Resort (Category 8, from 85,000 points per night on standard dates).

Similar to French Polynesia, the trek to the Maldives is time-consuming for North Americans. It can help to break up the trip with a stopover in Asia. Check out TPG's take on whether the Maldives or Bora Bora is better .

What's unique about the Maldives is that you're usually visiting an island resort on a specific atoll and not a country as a whole. Your vacation will be filled with quiet pool and beach time, snorkeling and diving, spa treatments and fine dining experiences. Seaplanes don't fly at night, so you really can't go anywhere else in the evenings.

The resorts of the Maldives are over-the-top luxurious and that is a draw in and of itself. You can pick from gorgeous overwater bungalows or beach villas -- many travelers split their reservations so they can stay a few days in each type of lodging.

While the Maldives is a haven for honeymooners , families with plenty of miles and points enjoy the trip since it's a place where you can really unplug and enjoy nature without any distractions.

How to get there: For all resorts, fly to the capital of Male (MLE) and then take a boat or seaplane transfer to your hotel. Many airlines fly to the Maldives, but the poshest are Emirates, Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines, Etihad, Korean Air and Cathay Pacific. Here's TPG's complete guide for getting to the Maldives on points and miles .

Where to stay points:

  • Ways to use your Marriott Bonvoy points abound in the Maldives. You can book The St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort for 100,000 points per night, the W Maldives or JW Marriott Maldives Resort & Spa for 85,000 points per night, or The Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort for 60,000 points per night, among others. The Category 8 Ritz-Carlton Maldives, Fari Islands will open in June and Le Meridien Maldives Resort & Spa (Category 5) opens in September.
  • Hilton Honors fans have several excellent options in the Maldives too, including the Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi (from 120,000 points per night), Conrad Maldives Rangali Island (from 95,000 points per night) or the SAii Lagoon Maldives, Curio Collection (from 85,000 points per night).
  • A Park Villa is yours at the Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaa for 30,000 World of Hyatt points or 15,000 points plus $425 per night.
  • At the InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort , you can book an Overwater Pool Villa from 100,000 IHG points per night.
  • Book with cash or Membership Rewards points through the Amex FHR program: Taj Exotica Resort & Spa , Cheval Blanc Randheli , One&Only Reethi Rah or Raffles Maldives Meradhoo Resort .

The Seychelles archipelago comprises more than 100 islands in the Indian Ocean -- about a thousand miles east of Mombasa, Kenya. It's another bucket list destination known for beautiful islands, lush forests, incredible underwater life and sunny weather.

Victoria, on Mahe Island, is the country's capital and home of the international airport (SEZ). The islands were only recently inhabited, around the 16th century, by European settlers -- mostly from Britain and France. The languages spoken here today include English, French and Seychellois Creole.

Some of the islands are known for having giant boulders on their beaches and it's a great destination for nature-lovers. There are a variety of nature reserves and activities ranging from hiking to horseback riding, diving and fishing. It's also the home to the Aldabra giant tortoise, which can live up to 120 years.

How to get there: Look for flights to Mahe (SEZ), the main island in the Seychelles archipelago. There are no nonstop flights from the U.S., so you'll need to connect somewhere, such as Istanbul (on Turkish Airlines), Frankfurt (on Lufthansa), Paris (on Air France), London (on British Airways), Dubai (on Emirates), Doha (on Qatar) or Abu Dhabi (on Etihad).

  • Hilton Honors points open the door to stays at Hilton Seychelles Northolme Resort & Spa (from 95,000 points per night), Hilton Seychelles Labriz Resort & Spa (from 80,000 points) and the DoubleTree by Hilton Seychelles - Allamanda Resort (from 70,000 points).
  • If you're looking to spend Marriott Bonvoy points, there's only one option — and it's a fancy one: North Island, a Luxury Collection Resort, Seychelles , which is a Category 8 property with special pricing. Per night redemptions are in excess of 350,000 points, so this is truly a once-in-a-lifetime trips.
  • Book with cash or Membership Rewards points through Amex FHR for stays at Four Seasons Resort Seychelles , Four Seasons Resort Seychelles at Desroches Island or Raffles Seychelles .

Zanzibar, Tanzania

sunny time travel

Zanzibar: It just sounds exotic.

It's an island archipelago off Tanzania's mainland, and the main island of Unguja is usually just referred to as Zanzibar. This is where you'll find Stone Town, a fascinating historic center where you can learn more about its Islamic and Swahili roots. This is the place to get a sense of what the area is all about and it's also where you can do some serious shopping for unique works of art.

To the north, you'll find a range of beachfront hotels. Your hotel can help you plan tours such as a dolphin-watching cruise or a snorkel excursion to Mnemba Island. You can rent jet skis to explore on your own and a cooking class is a must-do experience.

How to get there: Look for flights to the Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ) right on the island. Or, you can take a high-speed ferry from Dar es Salaam on the mainland.

  • You can stay at the Park Hyatt Zanzibar from 15,000 points per night in a standard room (or 7,500 points plus $210), 24,000 points for a standard suite and 30,000 points for a premium suite.
  • Marriott comes to the table with the Protea Hotel Zanzibar Mbweni Ruins . It's a Category 3 property, so your Bonvoy points will take you far (just 17,500 points per night on standard dates).
  • There are two Hilton options that start at 30,000 Hilton Honors points per night: the DoubleTree by Hilton Zanzibar - Stone Town and the DoubleTree Resort by Hilton Zanzibar - Nungwi .

Grand Canyon National Park

When is the best time to travel in the US?

  • Grand Canyon National Park
  • Month-by-month

Due to its sheer size and range of landscapes, regional climates across the US vary dramatically from season to season.

Southern California generally enjoys a pleasant year-round climate — mild in winter and hot in summer, making it a great place to visit in any season. Northern California, around San Francisco, is cooler and can be prone to sea mists along the fog belt.

Hawaii enjoys a tropical climate that’s warm and inviting year-round.

The South and Southwest experience hot, humid summers but mild winters and great conditions for outdoor activities in the spring. Hurricanes can affect the Gulf and east coasts most commonly from August to October, while tornadoes can be a common phenomenon in southern and central states in the summer months.

Temperatures in the Rocky Mountains change with altitude, but summers here are generally warm and pleasant, while winters often see heavy snow making travel planning tricky and unpredictable.

Month-by-month guide for traveling in the US

St. Petersburg, Florida

Visiting the US in January - March

Winter is a good time to visit the southern half of the country — including the South , California and the Southwest, with pleasant temperatures and often sunny days. It’s also a better-value and less-busy time to visit. The nights can be cold, particularly in the deserts, but temperatures are ideal during the day for outdoor activities such as hiking and sailing.

Events & Festivals

  • Mardi Gras, New Orleans’ biggest festival, culminates on the day before Ash Wednesday, with the largest and liveliest parades and street parties in the preceding few days.
  • Saint Patrick's Day (March 17): The Saint Patrick's Day parade is a celebration of all things Irish. Join the party as the city and the river turns green and pints of Guinness can be enjoyed in every bar in Chicago.

Louisiana Swamplands

Visiting the US in April

If you’re planning to visit the South or Southwest, April is an excellent time to travel, with warm, sunny weather. The national parks, forests and wetlands are lush and vibrant, wildlife is more active, and a variety of events take place in towns and cities as they emerge from winter.

  • Baseball season (April to September): The baseball season is long enough to be accessible to many visitors. Catch a game in Chicago, Boston or New York for a quintessential American experience.
  • Ski season in Colorado and Utah (April): The peak of the ski season in Colorado and Utah is in April, with more than enough snow covering the ground, coupled with sunny days and pleasant temperatures.

Bison in Grand Teton National Park

Visiting the US in May

Spring has arrived in most of the country. Sunny days reveal vivid-green vegetation, attractive prairie grasslands and wildlife newly emerged from winter. Mild temperatures mean you can explore in comfort and enjoy outdoor activities.

While Pacific storms can bring Hawaii most of its rainfall in May, the southwestern states are typically warm and dry, making it a good time to explore their natural landscapes.

  • Memorial Day takes place on the last weekend of the month and is recognized with parades and commemoration ceremonies.

The Amphitheatre at sunrise from Bryce Point, Bryce Canyon National Park

Visiting the US in June

June offers the best of both worlds in the northern half of the country, as you can experience warm, sunny days without the crowds of summer. The Rockies are perhaps at their most majestic, national parks are verdant and full of life, while in cities, you can take advantage of the weather at outdoor cafés and restaurants, in parks and gardens, and by following lakeside trails and cycle paths.

It’s also a good time to visit the south, where temperatures are ideal for outdoor and water-based activities like biking, hiking, fishing or sailing.

  • Wildflowers in Colorado (June): The mountains and valleys of Colorado are carpeted in bright wildflowers in full bloom at this time of year.

Grand Prismatic Spring, Yellowstone National Park

Visiting the US in July - August

Summer in the northern states is the most comfortable time to explore the outdoors, with many of the region's national parks at their very best. Take a hike into Montana's Glacier National Park , see the steaming geysers of Yellowstone or stay on a ranch in the Rockies.

In the southern half of the country, the hot summer months are filled with outdoor events, including fourth of July fireworks. The southwest attracts a dry heat and the south eastern states see humidity soar, inviting occasional thunderstorms to break up the heat.

  • July 4th celebrations: A day of barbecues, fireworks, carnivals and fun events across the country to recognize the Declaration of Independence.

Zion National Park

Visiting the US in September - October

The summer crowds have started to disperse in the southern half of the country by September, making this a quieter, better-value time to visit. However, storms are more prevalent along the eastern and central coast, with the hurricane season producing wet and windy weather. You’ll find less risk of storms further west, where temperatures are still pleasant and it’s a good time to explore the national parks of Utah and California . Meanwhile, Hawaii basks in warm, sunny days and you’ll find fewer visitors than in the summer months.

The view from the top of the Teton Village gondola, Grand Teton National Park

Visiting the US in November - December

Colder, shorter days mark the arrival of winter, with many areas in the northern half of the country experiencing their first snowfall in November. In southern states, the end of the year is milder and can be inclement in places, with rain showers possible. However, temperatures in the South are still pleasant.

There’s a noticeable air of anticipation across the country as Thanksgiving, and then Christmas, approaches, when travel becomes much busier.

  • New Year’s Eve celebrations: See fireworks filling the sky and enjoy parties across the US.
  • Thanksgiving Day (fourth Thursday of November): A national holiday giving thanks for the harvest and the preceding year, marked with traditional parades in many cities.

21 Sunny Places to Visit in USA You’ll Love

By: Author Amanda OBrien

Posted on Last updated: 16/02/2024

Sunbirds like me can’t handle the frigid winter temperatures and always look for sunny places to sunbathe instead of shoveling snow.

If you’re also a sunbird, you’re in luck because there’s a wide selection of warm places where people like us can enjoy the winter holidays in the United States.

Here are 21 sunny places to visit in USA that I think you’ll love.

21 Sunny Places to visit in USA

Most people see the cold as part of the holiday celebration. However, I, who despise winter, know that one can still celebrate New Year’s Eve and Christmas and have a great time without freezing.

If you’re like me, you’re browsing warm winter destinations a few months earlier to book your stay somewhere sunny.

To help your search, I’ve listed my favorite sunny spots you can visit and drink cocktails instead of eggnog, so take a look.

1. Honolulu, Hawaii

Hawaii makes a great choice for a winter vacation because it’s warm all year round. You can enjoy the beaches during winter and have a lovely experience.

I suggest visiting Honolulu and spending time at Waikiki Beach. The city’s hall combines the Hawaiian spirit of Aloha and Christmas for a unique and unforgettable experience.

honolulu waikiki beach sunny places to visit in usa

If you visit Honolulu, you can attend the annual Honolulu City Lights display with a large Santa Claus and observe the Sheraton Waikiki’s Christmas-themed sand sculptures.

Other exciting things you can do in this city include strolling the Chinatown Winter Walk during December, attending the Ko’olina Artfest, visiting the Bishop Museum, shopping at Kalakaua Avenue, having a meal in the Kapahulu neighborhood, etc.

honolulu diamond head.

Additionally, you can visit the Makapuu Lighthouse, absorb the beauty of the Diamond Head crater, and hang out at Kaiona Beach Park for a more peaceful experience.

You might enjoy reading my posts about the Warmest US States in Winter , Warm Places to visit in January in the USA , Warm Winter Getaways in the USA , Most Shark Infested Beaches in the USA , World Heritage Sites in the US , Most Visited Places in the United States and tourist attractions on the drive from New York to Florida.

2. Los Angeles, California

If you’re looking for a city with pleasant weather all year round, look no further than Los Angeles . Although winter months aren’t as hot as summer ones, the City of Angels makes a great place for a warm winter vacation.

griffiths observatory los angeles

The best part? You will never get bored in this place because it’s filled with theme parks open all year round. Los Angeles has the best amusement parks in the country.

You can also hike across the rugged environments and enjoy the spectacular city views. I prefer visiting LA during winter because it’s less crowded, and hiking doesn’t make you sweat. So you can explore the city in peace without sweating too much!

Santa_Monica_Pier_Sunset_Los_Angeles_California.jpg

Popular tourist attractions include Disneyland, Six Flags Magic Mountain , and Universal Studios Hollywood. You can also visit the LA Zoo during the holiday season.

Other interesting things in LA include the LA Auto Show and Winter Fest OC, Forest of Light at Descanso Gardens, Newport Beach Boat Parade, ice skating, etc.

3. Sedona, Arizona

Like LA, Sedona in Arizona has warm weather all year round. Therefore, it’s perfect for winter vacations. The high temperatures average about 60 degrees. If you’ve never visited Sedona, now’s your chance.

sunset on rocks in sedona

In winter, the city isn’t crowded, so accommodation prices drop. You can enjoy the deep red rocks during the cold months without breaking the bank.

The natural wonders of this city remain captivating all year round. You won’t find a more beautiful state during winter, so book your stay today and prepare for a unique trip.

cathedral rock

The city offers stunning views and red rocks for artists, spiritualists, and people who like and appreciate nature. If you visit Sedona, you should see one of the spas and enjoy traditional treatments with a local twist, such as red clay wraps, blue corn body scrubs, etc.

Other exciting activities in Sedona include hiking the scenic trails and photographing the impressive landscape, attending the Sedona Festival of Lights, riding the Verde Canyon Railroad Christmas Train, taking a hot air balloon ride, etc.

4. Maui, Hawaii

If you’re a fan of beaches and sea life, you should visit Maui for your winter vacation. You will explore the stunning beaches, see the whales, enjoy the warm weather, or hike and absorb the natural beauty of this large island.

Kapalua Bay maui

In Maui , you will find numerous lush valleys, volcanoes, waterfalls, many black beaches overlooking lovely landscapes, and other natural wonders.

This island makes a perfect vacation choice for nature enthusiasts because of the many outdoor and cultural activities.

Haleakala Volcano maui sunsets

Although you will likely stay at commercial hotels or resorts, you will still experience the local culture of the capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii through various activities.

While in Maui, you can ride along the Hana coast and see the waterfalls and black sand beaches. You can also book a snorkel tour and explore the sea or hike active volcanoes at Haleakala National Park, among many other things.

5. San Diego, California

Is Time Travel Possible?

We all travel in time! We travel one year in time between birthdays, for example. And we are all traveling in time at approximately the same speed: 1 second per second.

We typically experience time at one second per second. Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech

NASA's space telescopes also give us a way to look back in time. Telescopes help us see stars and galaxies that are very far away . It takes a long time for the light from faraway galaxies to reach us. So, when we look into the sky with a telescope, we are seeing what those stars and galaxies looked like a very long time ago.

However, when we think of the phrase "time travel," we are usually thinking of traveling faster than 1 second per second. That kind of time travel sounds like something you'd only see in movies or science fiction books. Could it be real? Science says yes!

Image of galaxies, taken by the Hubble Space Telescope.

This image from the Hubble Space Telescope shows galaxies that are very far away as they existed a very long time ago. Credit: NASA, ESA and R. Thompson (Univ. Arizona)

How do we know that time travel is possible?

More than 100 years ago, a famous scientist named Albert Einstein came up with an idea about how time works. He called it relativity. This theory says that time and space are linked together. Einstein also said our universe has a speed limit: nothing can travel faster than the speed of light (186,000 miles per second).

Einstein's theory of relativity says that space and time are linked together. Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech

What does this mean for time travel? Well, according to this theory, the faster you travel, the slower you experience time. Scientists have done some experiments to show that this is true.

For example, there was an experiment that used two clocks set to the exact same time. One clock stayed on Earth, while the other flew in an airplane (going in the same direction Earth rotates).

After the airplane flew around the world, scientists compared the two clocks. The clock on the fast-moving airplane was slightly behind the clock on the ground. So, the clock on the airplane was traveling slightly slower in time than 1 second per second.

Credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech

Can we use time travel in everyday life?

We can't use a time machine to travel hundreds of years into the past or future. That kind of time travel only happens in books and movies. But the math of time travel does affect the things we use every day.

For example, we use GPS satellites to help us figure out how to get to new places. (Check out our video about how GPS satellites work .) NASA scientists also use a high-accuracy version of GPS to keep track of where satellites are in space. But did you know that GPS relies on time-travel calculations to help you get around town?

GPS satellites orbit around Earth very quickly at about 8,700 miles (14,000 kilometers) per hour. This slows down GPS satellite clocks by a small fraction of a second (similar to the airplane example above).

Illustration of GPS satellites orbiting around Earth

GPS satellites orbit around Earth at about 8,700 miles (14,000 kilometers) per hour. Credit: GPS.gov

However, the satellites are also orbiting Earth about 12,550 miles (20,200 km) above the surface. This actually speeds up GPS satellite clocks by a slighter larger fraction of a second.

Here's how: Einstein's theory also says that gravity curves space and time, causing the passage of time to slow down. High up where the satellites orbit, Earth's gravity is much weaker. This causes the clocks on GPS satellites to run faster than clocks on the ground.

The combined result is that the clocks on GPS satellites experience time at a rate slightly faster than 1 second per second. Luckily, scientists can use math to correct these differences in time.

Illustration of a hand holding a phone with a maps application active.

If scientists didn't correct the GPS clocks, there would be big problems. GPS satellites wouldn't be able to correctly calculate their position or yours. The errors would add up to a few miles each day, which is a big deal. GPS maps might think your home is nowhere near where it actually is!

In Summary:

Yes, time travel is indeed a real thing. But it's not quite what you've probably seen in the movies. Under certain conditions, it is possible to experience time passing at a different rate than 1 second per second. And there are important reasons why we need to understand this real-world form of time travel.

25 Best Summer Vacations Everyone Should Consider in 2024

From Monaco to Napa Valley, these summertime getaways have something for every type of traveler.

sunny time travel

The term “summer vacation” conjures images of sunny afternoons at the beach and leisurely drives through the countryside. While plenty of travelers have their go-to spots, others view summer as the perfect time to embark on a new adventure, such as hiking to Machu Picchu, surfing in Nicaragua, or road-tripping through the American West.

No matter how many passport stamps you've collected or countries you've checked off your list, there's always a new corner of the globe to discover. Summertime getaways to places like Scotland and the U.S. Virgin Islands have recently been growing in popularity among travelers, joining the ranks of classic summer vacation destinations like Greece and Italy.

From river cruises to train adventures to African safaris, these are the best summer vacation ideas for 2024.

Enjoy la dolce vita in Italy.

When it comes to romance, few places rival the allure of Italy. You've got the history of Rome, the art of Venice, the fashion-forward vibe of Milan, the dreamy Mediterranean coastline, the wineries of Tuscany, the pizza of Naples, and more. During the summer, temperatures can soar to over 85 degrees, so consider visiting a destination by the sea or a lake, where you can escape the heat. For a true Italian villeggiatura (summer vacation), book a room at Passalacqua on Lake Como or Borgo Santandrea on the Amalfi Coast .

Take a road trip from Charleston to Savannah.

While it's mighty hot in the South during the summer (we’re talking temperatures in the 80s and 90s), there's plenty of sweet tea and lemonade available to cool you down. Begin your trip in the port city of Charleston, where you can wander picturesque cobblestone streets, walk the promenade along the ocean, photograph the colorful, historical homes of Rainbow Row, and eat your weight in crab cakes, hush puppies, and other Southern classics. Stay at The Loutrel , a luxury boutique hotel just steps away from some of the best things to do in Charleston .

Then, hop in the car and make your way to Savannah, about two hours south. While the coastal Georgia city has similar architecture and Spanish moss-draped oak trees, it also boasts dozens of world-class museums and art galleries where you can escape the heat. Check into The Alida , named one of the best hotels in Savannah by T+L readers.

Explore the cities of Colombia.

Colombia continues to climb the list of must-visit countries for curious travelers, and for good reason: Medellín offers immersion into art and culture, while Cartagena pairs history with seaside allure.

Often called the "City of Eternal Spring" due to its year-round warm weather, Medellín is especially pleasant in the summer when temperatures range from around 65 to 75 degrees. Days can be spent sipping gin cocktails on outdoor patios, hiking nearby mountains, exploring the surrounding rain forest, and getting a great calf workout (the town is built on hills).

While you're in the port city of Cartagena, you'll travel back in time to the 16th century through its iconic Old Town, which features colorful colonial buildings and cobblestone streets. Plus, the nearby white-sand beaches are never too crowded. Temperatures reach the upper 80s all summer, so prepare for sweltering days. Find some relief in a room at the Casa San Agustín .

Pretend you're 007 in Monaco.

If you haven't been to Paris, summer is a special time to visit. But, if you've had your fill of lazy sunset picnics along the Seine, consider Monaco instead. This tiny independent city-state on the Mediterranean coastline of France oozes international spy vibes. You'll feel like an extra in a James Bond film as you gamble at upscale casinos, sample local dishes at La Condamine market, or stroll along the boardwalk, admiring Monaco's hillside beauty in the pleasant summer weather, with highs of around 75 to 80 degrees. Complete your storybook vacation by checking into the iconic Hotel de Paris Monte-Carlo .

Get lost in the Medina of Marrakesh.

The North African country of Morocco is diverse, with a rich history and plenty of unique experiences to engage your senses. Whether you spend your time perusing the rows of local goods that line the winding lanes of the Medina of Marrakesh or riding a camel into the sunset and losing count of the stars in the Sahara Desert sky, a summertime trip is both invigorating and enticing. It's outside of the high season, so if you can take the nearly 100-degree heat, you'll benefit from fewer crowds and a calmer getaway — well, as calm as it can get while you bargain for tiles and dodge motorbikes. Book a stay at the Mandarin Oriental, Marrakech for private villas with lush gardens and open-air spa treatments.

Laze around in Montego Bay.

A hop-and-a-skip from the East Coast, Montego Bay on Jamaica's north coast is an idyllic spot to disconnect for a hot second. And by hot, we do mean hot: Temperatures can reach the high 80s in the summer, creating the perfect conditions for lazy days spent reading, dipping into the calm waters, and sipping rum cocktails. Relax at a resort or venture out to explore some of Jamaica's best beaches , such as Doctor's Cave Beach or Walter Fletcher Beach. If you're into snorkeling or scuba-certified, the protected waves of Montego Bay Marine Park are a must, too. Stay at the Round Hill Hotel and Villas to get a feel for the island's barefoot luxury.

Summit Machu Picchu.

The dry season (June, July, and August) is one of the most popular times of year to visit Machu Picchu due to the blue skies, lush green grass, and awe-inspiring views. Whether you're up for the challenge of hiking the Inca Trail or would prefer the Inca Rail , it's wise to spend a few days sightseeing and acclimatizing to the altitude in the nearby city of Cusco. The former capital of the Inca Empire is full of charm, with a hilltop that lights up at night, bustling local markets, and countless alpaca stores to splurge on a sweater for the chilly nights. For the best views of Machu Picchu, climb the mountain in front of it, Huayna Picchu. Then, return to the JW Marriott El Convento Cusco , where the hotel’s historic trappings and oxygen-enriched rooms are the perfect way to rebound after a day in the Andes.

Eat your way around Lima.

For foodies who prefer eating to sightseeing on vacation, Lima will feel like the holy grail of culinary destinations. There are countless restaurants with Michelin stars and affordable tasting menus. During June, July, and August, the Peruvian capital boasts sunshine-filled days and little rain, with balmy temperatures between 60 and 70 degrees. When you're not restaurant hopping, you can learn how to surf, snap photos of impressive graffiti art, and pet the countless cats who live in Parque Kennedy. Word to the wise: If you want to dine at top restaurants Central or Astrid & Gastón , you'll likely have to make reservations weeks or months in advance. Miraflores Park, A Belmond Hotel provides all the comforts of a five-star hotel alongside Peruvian cuisine, a rooftop pool with Pacific Ocean views, and a convenient location for exploring the area, including the hip Barranco neighborhood.

Ride the swells in Nicaragua.

Nicaragua is one of the top places to put your surfing skills to the test, and the waves during the wet season lend themselves to beginners and experts alike. This Central American country, tucked between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, features more than just no-filter-required sunsets — various regions mean you can experience everything from lakes to volcanoes. Before you leave, make sure you see the city of Granada, which is rich in Spanish colonial history. While there, book a room at Tribal Hotel for boho-chic interiors and icy poolside drinks to help you beat the upper-80-degree weather.

Go wine tasting in Napa Valley.

Courtesy of Napa Valley Wine Train

For a whole season of long, tipsy summer days, the Napa Valley region outside of San Francisco offers sunshine and foodie-approved meals. If you can make it in July, sip your way through Festival Napa Valley , which highlights a range of wineries offering their best blends. For a more playful afternoon, consider booking a luxurious tasting journey on the Napa Valley Wine Train .

Wine country’s own Auberge du Soleil has residential-style accommodations and an on-site French restaurant with outdoor dining, so you can sip local pours while taking in sweeping views of the verdant countryside.

Pretend you're not a tourist in New York City.

Ask any New Yorker and they'll agree: Summer isn't exactly the best time to visit the Big Apple. Between the unforgiving heat trapped by skyscrapers and an influx of tourists from around the world, most locals find any excuse to escape the concrete jungle in the summertime. However, there's an upside: New York City has plenty of free outdoor festivals this time of year, including Shakespeare in the Park and SummerStage . Plus, with less competition from in-the-know residents in late summer, you'll have a better chance of snagging reservations at trendy restaurants. Seek out rooftop bars, munch on artisan bites in Brooklyn, or make a break for the Hamptons if you have the time — and patience (the heading-out-of-town traffic is no joke).

There’s no shortage of world-class accommodations in the city that never sleeps. Whether you prefer classic stays at places like The Plaza or The Carlyle , or hip hotels like the Arlo Hotel , Soho Grand Hotel , and the Pendry Manhattan West .

Visit Mexico during the low season.

Outside of hurricane season, which peaks in September, summer is one of the best times to visit Mexico for fewer crowds and lower prices. If you can put up with the 90-degree heat of July and August, and occasional rainy days, you'll likely find some great deals on all-inclusive resorts and flights. Check into one of the sleek all-inclusive resorts in Los Cabos , explore the rich arts and culture scene in Puerto Vallarta, or go on a wellness retreat in the Caribbean beach town of Tulum.

Go on safari in South Africa.

Jess Macdonald/Travel + Leisure

For many seasoned travelers, South Africa holds a special place in their passports (and hearts). Each corner of this country presents a different climate and experience, and a getaway during the dry season can be particularly enchanting. There's plenty to see and do, from spotting animals in Kruger National Park and hiking Table Mountain in Cape Town to seeing the cliffs at the Cape of Good Hope and sipping your way through the wine region of Franschhoek.

If you can swing it, try timing your vacation in September when you're more likely to spot elephants, leopards, and many other species as they search for watering holes. June through August is technically winter in South Africa — you'll want to pack sweaters instead of swimsuits for this summer vacation — so expect mild days with chilly nights. There are several amazing safari lodges, but we recommend andBeyond Ngala Safari Lodge inside Kruger National Park for an intimate, immersive Big Five wildlife experience.

Hike the U.S. national parks.

Valerie de Leon/Travel + Leisure

The Grand Canyon, Yosemite, Joshua Tree, and Haleakala in Hawaii — we could go on and on about the breathtaking landscapes and adventures that await in our nation's national parks, and summer is prime time for a visit. You're likely to enjoy sunny blue skies and starlit evenings, and you'll have plenty of time to disconnect from the digital realm and tune into the rhythms of nature. Some parks are free to visit, some are underwater, and all are unique. Camp out without sacrificing comfort at Under Canvas , which has locations with access to the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, Zion, and Acadia national parks, among others.

Traverse Europe by train.

From college students to retirees, many travelers place a European trip at the top of their list — and for good reason. Eating a croissant beneath the Eiffel Tower in Paris, bicycling along the canals of Amsterdam, discovering historic castles in Ireland , and eating gelato while strolling past ancient Roman ruins in Italy are just a few of the incredible experiences that await in Europe. Grab a Eurail pass to hop between countries for a low price with minimal hassle.

See Florida from coast to coast.

The Sunshine State has it all — beaches, the Everglades , Key lime pie, the glamour and exclusivity of Palm Beach, the vibrant sizzle of Miami, and the tropical island vibe of the Florida Keys. Everyone should take time to explore Florida, from St. Augustine to Key West — home to the southernmost point in the continental U.S. — at least once in their lifetime. Of course, you'll want to hit the central city of Orlando for attractions like Walt Disney World, Epcot, and Universal Orlando. Plus, there are spectacular stays all across Florida, from seaside resorts to charming inns to all-inclusive idylls.

Take a cruise.

It's hard not to have a good time on a cruise. Meals and drinks are typically included, your ship comes equipped with a wide range of activities, and you sail from port to port, hitting a multitude of new destinations while only having to unpack once. What more can you ask from a summer vacation? For an even more refined and intimate take on cruising, try a river cruise through Europe .

Travel through the Wild West.

Put on your pioneer pants and head out for an adventure in America's Wild West. With history, wide-open spaces, and cowboy lore from centuries past, you'll feel as free as it comes in places like Colorado or Nevada. And you can’t get more Western-chic than at Amangani in Wyoming near Grand Teton National Park .

Try driving an electric vehicle on the Nevada Electric Highway , which features EV charging stations, including Tesla Superchargers. The route's combination of Gold Rush ghost towns and tomorrow's technology makes it a road trip of the future and the past all at once.

Drive the Pacific Coast Highway.

On the West Coast, State Route 1 — better known as the Pacific Coast Highway — runs along rugged cliffside terrain and expansive beaches, making it one of the most scenic drives in the country, if not the world. Plan your Pacific Coast Highway itinerary around the spectacular sunsets and plentiful photo ops. The summer weather will be beautiful, if toasty, with an average daily high in the upper 70s or 80s. Spend at least a couple nights in Big Sur at the Post Ranch Inn for classically California cool accommodations and sweeping Pacific views.

Not in the mood for a road trip? Tackle the Pacific Coast Highway by train on Amtrak's Coast Starlight route, which runs from Los Angeles to Seattle and hits spots like Santa Barbara, San Francisco, and Portland along the way.

Backpack in Southeast Asia.

You've seen the photos — now it's time to explore Bali, Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia yourself. Take a cooking class, go temple hopping, visit an ethical elephant sanctuary , and live it up — even on a budget. Prices for food, hotels, activities, and excursions are often much lower than in many other parts of the world. Those looking for luxury can also find high-end accommodations such as Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor in Cambodia, the Six Senses Con Dao in Vietnam, and Amanpuri in Thailand.

Get Adventurous in New Zealand.

For those who prefer the snow to the shore, beat the heat and travel to New Zealand, which experiences winter from June to August. You’ll be happy for the 50- to 60-degree weather when the country’s epic hiking, climbing, and bungee jumping get your blood pumping. And make no mistake: You will be spending all of your time outside. New Zealand is renowned for its gorgeous landscapes, from beautiful beaches and the fjords of Milford Sound to the wonder of the  Waitomo Glowworm Caves and charming locations used in The Lord of the Rings .

Sip rum swizzles in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Americans don’t need a passport to enjoy these three islands in the Caribbean. Whether you choose St. John, St. Croix, or St. Thomas (or hop between the three), you’ll find white sand, world-class snorkeling, and tropical surroundings in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Each has its own vibe. Go to St. John for a luxurious, private island-like atmosphere; St. Croix for the food ; and St. Thomas for the lively atmosphere of a tourist hot spot. Stay at a beachfront all-inclusive resort for a stress-free escape.

There are several rum distillers on the islands, so you can sip a locally sourced rum swizzle while you enjoy average summertime temperatures in the low 80s.

Golf in Scotland.

David Alexander/Getty Images

The U.K.'s northernmost nation is known for its gorgeous lochs, beautiful castles, and the windswept Highlands. From whisky distillery tours to walking the magnificent  West Highland Way to exploring the cosmopolitan centers of Glasgow and Edinburgh, there’s no shortage of things to do in Scotland . Plus, the sun doesn't set until around 10 p.m. in the Highlands in June and early July, so you'll have even more daylight for exploration.

But the real reason to take a summer vacation in Scotland is found on the green. This country is a golfer’s dream with more than 550 courses and a long legacy of seaside links. There are plenty of coastal spots for the ultimate summer game, like the Fairmont St. Andrews , where you'll have two courses to play and a chic room to return to at the end of the day.

Snap your way through Japan.

You might miss the spring cherry blossoms, but there are still plenty of beautiful places in Japan to photograph in the summertime. Pose in front of the country’s tallest peak in the Fuji Five Lakes area or capture Tokyo's frenetic energy at Shibuya Crossing. In Kyoto, you’ll get plenty of pictures of temples, shrines, and bamboo forests for your scrapbook. From enjoying white-sand beaches in Okinawa to seeing the wildflowers in Hokkaido's national parks, these are moments you'll want to remember.

Go island hopping in Greece.

Nothing says summer vacation like the Greek Islands. From sipping ouzo by the Aegean to snapping a few windmill pics for Instagram, this is the perfect Mediterranean getaway. Of course, you’ll have to deal with more crowds and hotter temperatures in July and August, but it’s a popular time to visit for a reason. More restaurants and bars are open and you’ll find more available ferry routes, opening up the entire archipelago for your summer vacation. Start in the Cyclades (where you'll find the famous islands of Mykonos and Santorini) before moving on to lesser-known Greek Islands like Antiparos, Symi, or Syros.

The best time to visit Seattle to avoid the rain (maybe)

Doug Murray

Seattle : a city of hippies and hipsters, technology and nature, craft beer and coffee...and rain. Lots and lots of rain. Or is it?

Yes, Seattle gets more rainy days than most other cities in the United States, but it’s actually drier than, say, New York or Miami.

When to visit depends on what you want to do in Seattle.  If you want to explore the parks and gardens that gave the Emerald City its name or catch incredible views from the Space Needle , you’ll want sunny skies – which come with crowds of tourists.  If you'd rather pay less for accommodation and avoid the crowds in the low season, you'll need to pack an umbrella.

Despite the association with inclement weather, Seattle has something for every type of traveler, whatever time of year you decide to visit. Whether you're looking to explore  iconic architecture  or dive into a thriving  craft beer scene , here's our guide on when to visit Seattle.

A rocky coastline with fall colors in the trees

April to May and September to October are ideal for exploring museums and farmers' markets

Spring and fall see lower temperatures than the short summer and fewer crowds while still escaping the heavy rain showers of winter.  Budget travelers can find good deals on accommodation and car rental rates at this time. Even during the shoulder season, the best time to drive through Seattle is between 9am and 4:30pm, and later between 7pm and 6:30am, in order to avoid rush hour.

April is usually the month where you’ll find the center of the “nice weather” and “cheaper hotel rates” Venn diagram. It’s not always sunny, but there are plenty of stunning days. Enjoy a celebration of the beauty of Japan at the  Cherry Blossom & Japanese Cultural Festival or raise a glass to the end of winter at the Seattle Scotch and Beer Fest .

May brings big business for waterside attractions. Visit before Memorial Day (the last Monday in May) – this could be your last chance for an affordable hotel rate for a while. Get a taste of the local culture of the Pacific Northwest at the Northwest Folklife Festival but be careful – you may run out of reasons to ever leave the area!

Genessa Gariano, Lydia Night, and Sage Chavis of The Regrettes performs at the 2018 Bumbershoot Festival at Seattle Center

September has one of the highlights of the cultural calendar:  Bumbershoot ,  a multi-day arts festival that began in the 1970s. This is also one of the best times to go whale watching in Seattle. Once Bumbershoot’s over, the tourists go home, and hotel prices deflate. But the weather usually remains sunny and relatively warm until early October, making this the perfect time for spotting whales without the crowds.

There’s always the chance of a prolonged summer early in October, while the start of the shoulder season brings lower prices. The best time to visit Seattle in the fall comes as the clouds roll in and people get out to celebrate Halloween and the Seattle Queer Film Festival .

Average highs are in the 50s and 60s (Fahrenheit) during the spring and fall, so you’ll want to bring a warm layer for the evenings.  Rainfall is characteristically a persistent yet light drizzle rather than a deluge, and more than half of these months are completely dry days. Still, an umbrella is a sensible precaution.

Tourists and shoppers inside the famous Pike Place Market in downtown Seattle

June to August is the perfect time for outdoor parks and festivals

Although blistering sunny weather is infrequent in Seattle, overcast but not rainy days are not unusual. The record number of consecutive dry days is 55, set in 2017, and your best chance for a clear forecast falls between June and September.

Summer is on the way in June and when the mercury rises, you can feel the city loosen up and sigh contentedly. It’s also Pride month, and celebrations are abundant in Seattle .

The ever-improving weather in July means bigger crowds and the high season sees peak demand for flights, transport and hotel prices. Expect crowds at famous Seattle sights like Pike Place Market and the Museum of Pop Culture .  The best time to visit the Seattle Space Needle is on clearer days, either early in the morning before the crowds arrive or at sunset, so you can get daytime and nighttime views in one visit. Book ahead for popular events in July such as the 4th of July celebrations at  Seafair .

Salmon bakes, neighborhood street fairs and lazy beach afternoons give August a laid-back feel. But school’s out, so expect ubiquitous cries of excited kids. BrasilFest brings the party atmosphere to town with a huge celebration of all things Brazilian at the Seattle Center.

Skiers climbing snowy slope

November to March is the best time to get cozy in a coffee shop and explore the music scene

November can be a dismal month for weather in Seattle but don’t let anyone convince you that this is the worst time to visit. Most sights stay open and, with the low season kicking in, some hotels slash their prices to half the summer rates. Indoor spaces such as theaters and music venues come into their own during the low season; the soggy weather is partly responsible for Seattle’s famously creative music scene and its vibrant coffee shop culture.

Seattle’s surrounding ski resorts open up in December, making the city an ideal urban base for snow-related activities. Hotel prices continue to drop along with the temperatures. The festive season ramps up with Winterfest , the Christmas Ship Parade of Boats and New Year’s Eve fireworks at the Space Needle .

January shuffles in with a hangover and occasional flurries of snow. Plan indoor activities, or bring your skis and head to the nearby mountains. Of all the months in the year,  January historically sees the most discounted prices on plane tickets. Brave souls can start the new year with a splash as part of the Polar Bear Plunge and dive into the new year invigorated if a little chilly. Plunges happen at multiple bodies of water all over the city and are a wonderfully positive start to the new year. Food trucks with hot beverages await you once you run for cover.

The dark, dreary days of February and occasional bouts of genuine cold keep most in figurative hibernation. Scour the internet for hotel deals and book a night at the theater – super low prices mean this a great time to nab a bargain if you don't mind wrapping up. The odd warm day in March can see restaurants opening up their patios, but more often than not, the rain persists. Saint Patrick’s Day celebrations provided a good excuse to shrug off the long, hard winter and turn your face toward the warm light of Spring.
