Sydney Shore Excursions
Amazing experiences coming soon., sorry, there are no excursions for this port at this moment., things to do in sydney.
Go in Circles
Sydney Harbour Bridge. Australia.
Circular Quay is the perfect place to start exploring Sydney. You can find the Opera House here and Harbour Bridge is within walking distance. Stride into one of the many walking and pub tours that leave from here. Just 20 minutes away, you can stretch your legs on the iconic Harbour Bridge walk, the first of its kind in the world.
People enjoying Manly beach in Sydney, Australia
Bondi Beach gets all the attention, but Manly Beach in the Northern Beaches is a bit more local. The Corso is lined with shops and restaurants, including local favourite, Hugo's. If surfing is your thing, this is the place to be. The walk from Spit Bridge to Manly is a fantastic way to soak in the city's coastline.
Walk Watsons
Hop on the ferry or one of the regular buses that go to Watsons Bay to enjoy the scenic hike around South Head. During your journey, you'll enjoy views of Sydney Harbour, North Head, the historic Hornby Lighthouse and, of course, the sapphire-blue Pacific Ocean. The Gap offers breathtaking views of the sea from the rocky cliffside.
Local Cuisine
With all the water surrounding you, it's no surprise that seafood takes centre stage on many plates in the city. Head to Sydney Fish Market for giant Sydney Rock oysters or classic fish and ships. Stop into a local pie shop for a traditional Australian meat pie, or explore Sydney's international side with udon or ramen noodles at a Japanese noodle bar, or seek out prawn dumplings in Chinatown.
There are plenty of shopping centres in the heart of the city, including Westfield Mall, Pitt Street Mall and the wonderful Queen Victoria Building, which is now a shopping centre featuring top designers. Seek out cutting boards made from local camphor laurel – they're not only beautiful but also have natural antimicrobial properties. During your Sydney cruise holiday, look for jewellery made from opal, the national gemstone of Australia.

Top Sights & Attractions To See Before Cruises From Sydney
Sydney opera house.
The Sydney Opera House is the city’s defining landmark and a fabulous display of modern architecture. The exterior was designed in the shape of the sails of a sailboat, and its unique structure often gleams in the sunlight. The Opera House’s sail shape also provides excellent acoustics for the many performances that occur inside the venue each year, which include opera, ballet, music, comedy, kid shows, inspirational speakers, and more.
Taronga Zoo
Sydney’s Taronga Zoo is a popular attraction for animal lovers embarking on one of our cruises from Sydney. This award-winning zoo features over 4,000 animals, which includes species that are native to Australia as well as rare and endangered animals. Australia’s most famous beach is also one of its most beautiful. Bondi Beach is only about 15 minutes southeast of Sydney’s city center and provides a quintessential Australian beach-going experience. You’ll find soft golden sand, beachfront restaurants and bars, and lots of surfing and other water sports.
Manly Beach
Another popular beach to visit in Australia is Manly Beach, especially if you love surfing. Manly Beach was the site of the world’s first surfing contest back in 1964. While its legendary waves along the northern end of the beach at Queenscliff Bommie are only recommended for advanced surfers, the area on the southern end of Manly Beach has great waves for beginner surfers, too.

Both kids and adults will love going on exhilarating rides, taking a leisurely spin on the Ferris wheel, and gliding down giant slides. During your visit, you’ll also find carnival-style foods and games.
Where c an I eat in Sydney?
Foodies will love Sydney’s international food scene. From ritzy waterfront restaurants to laid-back eateries along one of Sydney’s “eat streets,” the city has it all. For an after-dinner drink, it’s hard to beat a cocktail in one of the sky bars located atop its many skyscrapers. If you’re looking for a gourmet meal in a setting like nowhere else, head to Sixpenny or Bennelong, an elegant restaurant located inside the Sydney Opera House.
What’s the culture and history of Sydney?
Sydney Harbour was originally the home of the aboriginal tribes of Australia. With the arrival of Britain’s First Fleet in 1788, the city of Sydney (named after Lord Sydney, the British Home Secretary at the time) was established as a penal colony of Great Britain. By 1840, the transportation of convicts to the city had ceased. A decade later, the population of the city grew exponentially after a local gold rush.
Up until 1900, Sydney was the capital of New South Wales, a British colony. But after the Commonwealth of Australia was established in 1901, Sydney became the capital of the state of New South Wales, which joined the Australian Federation. The wild and harsh start of colonial Sydney is now long in the past. Today, you’ll find a vibrant and cosmopolitan city with one of the most diverse populations in the world.
Where can I go shopping near the Sydney cruise port?
You will find an assortment of shopping malls near the Sydney cruise port. Some of the largest are Westfield Sydney, The Galeries, and World Square. For local boutiques, head to the intersection of Oxford Street and Glenmore Road. In the neighborhood of Paddington, you’ll find shops with cutting-edge fashion from new designers. For souvenirs and art, head to The Rocks near the Sydney Opera House, or the Strand for Australian hats and boots.
How can I get around Sydney?
Sydney has a variety of public transportation options. Its extensive bus route system goes to many of the most popular tourist sites, plus there are a light rail and ferry service. In addition, the Sydney Metro provides fast, frequent service around the city. As for taxis, you’ll find them waiting right outside the Sydney cruise terminal, as well as in taxi ranks all around the city.
What are the local currency and tipping customs?
Australia’s official currency is the Australian dollar. The paper bills come in increments of $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100. Credit cards are widely accepted, but traveler’s checks are not. Tipping isn’t expected in Australia, but is appreciated. If you do tip, a smaller amount around 10% is usually acceptable.

The big players are all promising full Australian seasons. Among P&O Australia’s mix of domestic voyages are Barrier Reef Discovery cruises out of Brisbane, A Taste of Tasmania cruises from Adelaide, and a four-night cruise return from Adelaide that visits Port Lincoln and Kangaroo Island.
Meanwhile, P&O’s South Pacific cruises, most out of Cairns and Sydney, will visit destinations such as New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea and Fiji. From Brisbane, a series of seven-night Pacific Island Hopper itineraries take in Noumea, Port Vila and Lifou, with several days at sea so guests can enjoy the entertainment and amenities of Pacific Encounter.
Princess Cruises is also anticipating a busy Australian season in Australia. Coral Princess is returning to Brisbane for Pacific island and Papua New Guinea cruises. Royal Princess and Majestic Princess will operate round-trip cruises to New Zealand from Sydney, and Grand Princess from Melbourne. There will also be Queensland, Tasmanian and Fiji cruises from eastern homeports, cruises from Adelaide and Fremantle, and a 28-day Round Australia circumnavigation in October 2022.
Royal Caribbean’s 2022–23 season Down Under features two high-tech Quantum-class ships. From October 2022, Quantum of the Seas sails from Brisbane to destinations in Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific. Ovation of the Seas sails from Sydney to Queensland, New Zealand and the South Pacific. Meanwhile, Radiance of the Seas has 22 departures from Sydney to destinations such as Great Barrier Reef, South Pacific, New Zealand and Tasmania.
Also arriving towards the end of 2022 is Celebrity Eclipse . Between September 2022 and April 2023, it will offer itineraries ranging from two-night sampler cruises to 18 night voyages in the Pacific, departing from Sydney and Auckland. The ship overnights in Adelaide, Cairns and Hobart on some itineraries, has added Port Arthur as a new port, and has 8pm departures from some ports that provide longer stays.
Tasmania is certainly tipped to be an ever-more popular destination. Carnival Cruise Line too is offering Tasmanian cruises on both its Australia-based ships. Carnival Splendor, homeported in Sydney, will also visit New Zealand in November 2022 before sailing to Papua New Guinea. Carnival Spirit, based in Brisbane, will operate three-day sampler crises and itineraries to the Great Barrier Reef, New Caledonia and Vanuatu.
Cunard is homeporting Queen Elizabeth in Australia for a record 124 days between November 2021 and March 2022, culminating in a rendezvous with Queen Victoria in Sydney Harbour. Among the cruises is an inaugural Fiji and South Pacific journey and inaugural visits to Lautoka, Suva and Eden. The ship is back again at the end of 2022, sailing Fremantle–Sydney, Tasmanian cruises out of Melbourne, and New Zealand cruises from Melbourne and Sydney. The most spectacular offering is an Australian circumnavigation, round-trip from Bali.
Other large cruise lines are making briefer Australian appearances. The newly renovated Norwegian Spirit will sail Sydney–Auckland and Sydney–Bali in March 2022, a 14-day voyage from Sydney to Papeete in April, and returns for a Sydney–Auckland cruise in December. Holland America’s Oosterdam cruises Sydney–Auckland in early 2022 before heading onwards to Seattle. And Viking Cruises is sailing Sydney–Auckland cruises (or the reverse) in January, February and December 2022 and Sydney–Bali (or the reverse) in March.
Those looking for smaller luxury ships won’t be disappointed, either. Crystal Symphony sails Melbourne to Sydney in January on a predominantly New Zealand cruise, then Sydney–Bali. Crystal Serenity sails Auckland–Fremantle in February. Regent Seven Seas’ inaugural season here starts at the end of 2022 when Explorer sails Singapore–Sydney, followed by Sydney–Auckland itineraries.
Seabourn Odyssey visits from December 2022 to March 2023, with five 16-day voyages between Sydney and Auckland, and a 16-day Queensland Coast & Orchard Isles voyage from Sydney to Bali. Meanwhile, most of Oceania’s New Zealand cruises from Sydney in early 2022 are already sold out, but Regatta sails an Aussie Adventure circumnavigation in December 2022.
As for expedition cruising, the most varied Australian choices come from Coral Expeditions, including extended Kimberley sailing dates aboard new vessel Coral Geographer , a new 18-night Across the Top expedition between Broome and Cairns (or the reverse) in January 2022, and a new 14-night Great Southern Coastline cruise from Melbourne to Fremantle in March.
Ponant has two expedition ships in the Kimberley between March and September 2022, followed by a New Guinea cruise from Darwin, two Papua New Guinea cruises from Cairns, and an east-coast cruise to Sydney. It then offers a Tasmanian itinerary over Christmas and New Year. Silversea also returns for a Kimberley season. Silver Shadow will also sail Cairns–Melbourne in January 2022, followed by New Zealand itineraries from Sydney and Melbourne.
The most adventurous expedition offering is Aurora Expeditions’ all-new voyages from Hobart aboard Greg Mortimer to the Ross Sea and Commonwealth Bay in East Antarctica, running until March 2022. It’s the first time that the polar specialist has sailed this part of the Antarctic, where it will provide its usual adventurous excursions such as kayaking and polar snorkelling. The cruise also visits Australia’s remote Macquarie Island and New Zealand’s Subantarctic Islands.

Sydney, Australia
If you want a snapshot of Australia's appeal, look no further than Sydney: The idyllic lifestyle, friendly locals and drop-dead natural beauty of this approachable metropolis and its attractions explain why the country tops so many travelers' wish lists. But Sydney is more than just the embodiment of classic antipodean cool—the city is in a constant state of evolution. A list of what to do in Sydney might start with the white-hot nightlife, with its new cocktail bars and idiosyncratic mixology dens. Inventive restaurants helmed by high-caliber chefs are dishing up everything from posh pan-Asian to Argentine street food, while the famous dining temples that put Sydney on the gastronomic map are still going strong too.
The famed harbor is among the top sights—home to twin icons the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge, it is the stepping-off point for some of the city's best cultural attractions and sightseeing. In one day you can sail around the harbor, get a behind-the-scenes tour of the opera house and climb the bridge, with time to spare for people-watching over a flat white at a waterfront café.
Speaking of water, when you plan what to do in Sydney, you will want to include the iconic beaches, where surfers, office workers and tourists alike converge on some of the most gorgeous shoreline scenery anywhere. Bondi, Bronte and Clovelly are all within easy reach of the Central Business District, as is Manly, a charming seaside town located a short ferry ride from Circular Quay. Beyond the city you'll discover UNESCO World Heritage Sites and the chance to encounter Australia's cuddliest wildlife—a perfect way to round out your envy-inducing Sydney photo collection.

Glen Powell said he almost went broke waiting for 'Top Gun: Maverick' to debut because Tom Cruise didn't want it on a streamer. Then it made $1.5 billion.
- Glen Powell said he was "waiting for my life to change" when Tom Cruise delayed releasing "Maverick."
- Powell said this led to his bank account "depleting" during the pandemic.
- He also had success with a movie premiering in theaters instead of on a streamer with "Anyone but You."
Glen Powell said his bank account was "depleting" as he waited for "Top Gun: Maverick" to arrive in theaters after Tom Cruise delayed the sequel's premiere during the pandemic.
The actor played Lt. Jake "Hangman" Seresin alongside Cruise, Val Kilmer, Miles Teller, and Jon Hamm in 2022's "Maverick," and his performance as the arrogant pilot won audiences over.
In an interview published in The Hollywood Reporter last week, Powell said he was having financial difficulties after Cruise refused to have "Maverick" released on a streaming service. During the pandemic, most studios delayed filming and releasing their movies or put them on streamers while theaters were closed.

"I'd never made any significant amount of money on a movie, including 'Top Gun,' and I was depleting a bank account to a point where my accountant was like, 'This pandemic cannot last much longer,'" Powell said.
Cruise had faith in the film, which is why he wanted to ensure its theatrical release. But it was difficult for Powell at the time.
"Tom was already Tom; I was waiting for my life to change," he said.
It seems it was worth the wait. According to Box Office Mojo , "Top Gun: Maverick" raked in $1.495 billion worldwide.
Powell saw similar success with a theatrical versus streaming release with the recent R-rated rom-com "Anyone but You," which features Sydney Sweeney .
"We had offers from every streamer, and it was guaranteed [paydays] and a much bigger budget, but Syd and I really have a very similar worldview about Hollywood," Powell said.
"We said, 'If we make this on a streamer, it won't have any cultural impact,'" he said. "And everyone was saying rom-coms were dead theatrically so we knew we could get hosed, but we thought, 'Let's take the gamble,' because what if we could bring them back?"
That gamble paid off because the sleeper hit made $219 million (according to Box Office Mojo) against an estimated $25 million budget , which was likely helped by Powell's and Sweeney's star power and their embrace of rumors that they were secretly dating in real life.
Powell said: "Even if it's me taking my clothes off on the side of a fricking cliff, it's like, you got to do some shit in here that makes noise."

Glen Powell Recalled That Tom Cruise’s Decision To Delay “Top Gun: Maverick” For Two Years Nearly Left Him Broke
“I was depleting a bank account to a point where my accountant was like, ‘This pandemic cannot last much longer.’”
BuzzFeed Staff
Though Glen Powell’s global fame was significantly boosted last year by his starring role in Anyone But You , many would consider Top Gun: Maverick to be his true Hollywood breakout.
In the hit sequel to the 1986 classic, Glen plays Hangman, an arrogant Navy pilot selected to undertake a high-profile mission led by Tom Cruise ’s Maverick.
Glen narrowly missed out on the part of Rooster, which ultimately went to Miles Teller .
And now, in a new interview with the Hollywood Reporter , the actor opened up about how the casting was a saving grace — both for his career and his bank balance.
For context, Top Gun: Maverick was initially meant to be released on June 24, 2020 , but its release date was pushed back several times because of the pandemic.
At the time, star and producer Tom Cruise was adamant that the $170-million production shouldn’t go directly to a streaming service, and as a result, the movie was put on hold for two years until they could release it in theaters in May 2022.
It goes without saying that this wound up being a great choice, with the movie eventually grossing $1.5 billion worldwide. However, as it was Glen’s biggest casting to date, the film’s delay left him pretty strapped for cash.
“I’d never made any significant amount of money on a movie, including Top Gun , and I was depleting a bank account to a point where my accountant was like, ‘This pandemic cannot last much longer,’” Glen said, recalling the two-year delay.
Of his costar, he added: “But Tom was already Tom; I was waiting for my life to change.”
In 2022, Tom confirmed that letting Top Gun: Maverick go straight to streamers simply wasn’t an option for him, saying: “That’s not going to happen. Ever… I make movies for the big screen.”
It’s unclear whether Tom considered that the delay would inadvertently put some of his castmates in financial trouble. However, Glen seems not to have held it against him, having previously described the actor as “one of a kind.”
“To make movies on that scale, if you want to make a Top Gun: Maverick , with that budget, you have to be able to justify your value as a star and your creative influence to make sure that movie will play everywhere,” Glen told GQ in 2022 .
He continued: “That’s where studios trust Tom. They look at Tom, and they go, ‘Yeah, you know how to do this, go do it.’ I find that to be a really fun challenge. Do I have the ability to do that?”

A mum has stunned the internet after showing off her massive pregnancy bump that is almost impossible to notice from behind.
Fitness coach Maria is pregnant with twins, and revealed in a recent viral video that a lot of people can’t tell she’s pregnant when they stand behind her.
In the cheeky video, the mum claims her belly is the perfect way to keep men from flirting with her while she’s working out, Kidspot reports.
‘That’s one way to get rid of them’
When blokes try to chat her up, Maria would just turn around and leave them shocked by her humungous bump.
“That’s one way to get rid of them,” she joked in the video’s caption.
Maria has been active at the gym throughout her most recent pregnancy, and said anyone telling pregnant women they shouldn’t be working out was wrong.
“If you’ve been lifting weights for a year, two years, whatever, you can continue doing so,” she said. “Just adjust the weights a little bit.”
The Sun reports Marie recently admitted that she “still couldn’t believe” she was having twins - even at her baby shower.
‘I would never have guessed’
But while some are wondering whether it will be girls, boys - or a combination of the two - many couldn’t get over the huge size of the bump.
One person was totally gobsmacked, writing: “Nothing on planet earth could have prepared me for that.
“Wow you carry so well, all the best to you and family.”
“Now I would NEVER have guessed,” another confessed.

Linklater’s ‘Hit Man’ deserves to be a hit, man
Glen Powell stars in a delightfully dark comedy that should make him a marquee name.
“Hit Man” is opening in theaters Friday and premiering on Netflix two weeks from now. You can watch it on the streaming service, of course, but the movie’s director, Richard Linklater, really wants you to watch it in a movie theater, and, honestly, so do I. A blast of pure pleasure and one of the year’s best films, “Hit Man” should be seen with a crowd grooving on its devilish comic energy, its off-the-charts sexual chemistry and the star-making turn at its center.
That star is Glen Powell, who’s been bumping up toward better things over the past few years, from the motormouthed college ballplayer in Linklater’s “Everybody Wants Some!!” (2016) to Tom Cruise’s rival in “Top Gun: Maverick” (2022) to romancing Sydney Sweeney in last year’s mush-brained romantic comedy “Anyone But You.” He has the lead in the “Twister” sequel due in July, but the whip-smart “Hit Man” is the one that should do the trick. Wit, sex appeal and crack comic timing — Powell’s got it all.
For that matter, so does his co-star Adria Arjona (“Andor”), but we’re getting ahead of ourselves.
Based very loosely on a true story, “Hit Man” casts Powell as Gary Johnson, a contentedly nerdy psychology professor at the University of New Orleans who moonlights as a technical adviser for police sting operations. When Jasper (Austin Amelio), the sketchy undercover cop who usually plays the fake killer-for-hire, is suspended, Gary is drafted to take his place at the last minute; to everyone’s surprise, including his own, the mild-mannered academic has a gift for posing as an ice-cold assassin. Soon he’s the department’s main “hit man,” changing his dress, hair and attitude for each of the lowlifes who are willing to pay to have someone removed. As Gary explains, hit men don’t much exist outside of the movies, but people fantasize that they do, and his job is to become the fantasy. “I had the knack,” he says, “of being the person they needed me to be.”
A movie like this has to have a complication, and in “Hit Man,” the complication’s name is Maddy (Arjona), a smoldering sweetie pie with an abusive husband (Evan Holtzman) whom the planet would really be better off without. That’s what she says, anyway, and maybe it’s true. When she meets Gary, who’s posing as a slick, affable professional killer named Ron, what starts as a business meeting turns into a date before either is entirely aware of what’s happening. It’s at this point that the movie shifts into a delightful second gear, as Gary’s — excuse me, Ron’s — attraction to Maddy, and hers to him, starts gumming up the works and adding layers to the imposture. Everyone seems to like Ron more than Gary — even Gary.
Beyond that, I can tell you no more, other than to say that “Hit Man” piles one twist upon another until we’re as unsure as Gary about which person he’s pretending to be, and for whom. To give the movie ballast, his day job in the classroom allows for some light philosophizing, Gary throwing his students curveballs like, “What if your self is a construction, a role you’ve been playing since you can remember?”
Fine, but this is first and foremost an entertainment, one made by people working at the top of their game while having the time of their lives. Linklater is one of our best, most independent-minded filmmakers, and every now and then, he drops the formal experiments of “Boyhood” or the “Before Sunrise” trilogy to turn out something perfectly commercial, like “School of Rock” or “Dazed and Confused,” just to remind us that he can. “Hit Man” isn’t commercial in the strict modern Hollywood sense — there’s no CGI and no chase scenes, and not a single gun is fired (on-screen, anyway). But the script, co-written by the director and the star, is the kind that flatters an audience’s senses of intelligence and humor, and the central romance isn’t just ridiculously hot but funny and sweet — two people sparking to each other’s rhythms as they reveal themselves step by step.
Which, of course, is a lie, since there’s more than enough pretending to go around. The gamesmanship between Ron and Maddy ultimately leads to a blissfully funny scene where the impostures and playacting acquire the stature of three-dimensional chess, with cellphone cues and an audience of law enforcement listening in. It’s one of those sequences you play back in your head after the movie is over, just to figure out how they did it.
The backcourt of “Hit Man” is stacked with talent as well, from Amelio’s lanky, live-wire sleazeball of a bad cop to Retta and Sanjay Rao as Gary’s deadpan associates in the sting operation, agreeing between themselves that they’d probably sleep with Ron if they had the chance. Everyone’s so likable, in fact, that it’s not until the movie’s over that you may realize you’ve been waltzed into an awfully dark ethical corner. You can talk about that on the drive home, too.
Goosing it all along is a soundtrack of rolling New Orleans R&B, heavy on the Dr. John, Professor Longhair and a sublime Allen Toussaint cover version of “Cast Your Fate to the Wind.” Appropriate title, that, since “Hit Man” is a fable about making it up as you go along, until you realize that you stopped being you about 10 miles back.
R. At Alamo Drafthouse Cinema DC-Crystal City and the AFI Silver Theatre. Available June 7 on Netflix. Contains language throughout, sexual content and some violence. 115 minutes.

Glen Powell Finally Conquered Hollywood. So Why Is He Leaving?
The red hot star of ‘Top Gun’ and ‘Anyone But You’ — mentored by Tom Cruise and on every studio wish list — is returning to his native Texas to party with his folks, escape the L.A. fishbowl and finally graduate college. But don’t worry, you’ll still be seeing him everywhere.

Glen Powell arrives at lunch through a back door toting a container of bone broth he isn’t eager to look at, much less consume. He’s more a “chicken-fried-steak-in-Austin kind of a guy,” he insists, but he’s signed on to star in an A24 revenge thriller and he’s supposed to drop 15 pounds in a matter of weeks. It means he won’t be ordering the midday margarita that Ron Perlman is nursing at the next table. Reluctantly, Powell requests a green juice.

But Powell’s not one to give up on anything, so he hands over the broth. The restaurant’s going to store it for him, he tells me, since he doesn’t have a kitchen of his own in Los Angeles anymore. After more than 15 years here, he is moving back home to Texas, where he’ll finally complete his college degree and be closer to his family. He’ll keep a place in Tribeca, too, but he’s officially turned over the keys to his spot in the Hollywood Hills that he’s been living in ever since he landed his breakout role in Top Gun: Maverick . In fact, this is Powell’s last week in L.A., which is hitting him harder than he anticipated. Still, at 35, he’s ready for a change, and the real benefit of “getting to this point in Hollywood is that I can now leave Hollywood,” he says. “It’s like I’ve earned the ability to go back to my family.”
But Powell isn’t interested in simply being another actor-for-hire, nor is he waiting around to become the next Tom Cruise . “First of all, there will never be another Tom Cruise,” he says of his co-star, who has become a friend and mentor. “That is a singular career in a singular moment, but also movie stars of the ’80s, ’90s, early 2000s, those will never be re-created.”
When it’s suggested that the imperiled state of the movie star in today’s Wall Street-tethered, superhero-obsessed landscape is a shame, in part because it seems like Powell would’ve had a hell of a time, he howls in agreement. “Oh, I’ve heard the stories from the guys on Expendables 3 ,” he says, referring to the 2014 movie he made with a who’s who of ’80s action stars. “It was these giants — Antonio Banderas, Harrison Ford, Schwarzenegger — and they were all like, ‘Man, you are doing this in the wrong moment.’ Like, ‘This is not the time.’ ” Richard Linklater , who directed Powell in Hit Man , which they co-wrote, doesn’t argue. “I can’t be like, ‘My advice to you is to be born 25 years earlier,’ ” Linklater says, “but I’ve thought that about Glen. Like, God, you’re in the wrong era.”
Powell was voted most likely to be a movie star in his high school yearbook, but his introduction to Hollywood came years earlier. At 13, the then-budding actor snagged a small role in Spy Kids 3 , a local production being directed by fellow Texan Robert Rodriguez. It was, by all accounts, an out-of-body experience for a boy who’d walk around with a video camera perpetually dangling from his neck. Still, it was Powell’s second experience — being cast on Endurance 2 , a Survivor -style competition series on Discovery Kids — that arguably proved more transformative.
“Glen from Austin, TX,” which is how an earnest, still-prepubescent Powell is ID’d in the premiere, fails the first physical challenge and gets kicked off in episode one. Even the retelling has him wincing. “I mean, it’s the most embarrassing thing that can happen to a freshman in high school. Not only are you the runt of the grade, but you just failed on a strength performance thing in front of the world, and the amount of shit that I got was extraordinary,” says Powell. He didn’t let it sink him, however. Even as a kid, he remembers thinking, “I’ll show them,” and he quickly bulked up, giving him both a surge of confidence and a leg up athletically. “It made me just ferocious, like, ‘I’m going to become the strongest mother-fucker ever,’ and weirdly more dialed-in in every aspect of my life.”
“I’ll never forget it. I sat down with him and Denzel, and it was quick. Ed goes, ‘You should move out here and give this a shot.’ He’s like, ‘This shit doesn’t happen overnight, but you should take the plunge,’ ” he says of a conversation that he’s replayed over and over in his head. Washington, who has since joked that Powell owes him his career, gave his blessing. “He’s like, ‘This guy’s discovered everybody; don’t run from this, Glen.’ “
In time, the Holmby Hills couple decided to divorce, and Powell moved into somebody’s garage in a seedy area of Van Nuys. “It was all those clichéd things where, like, they’d find a body a block away and then you’d come home to your tires slashed,” he says. Still, he kept at it, auditioning relentlessly. He even got another shot at Friday Night Lights , which he’d read for a number of times early on in Austin. Powell was older and arguably wiser now, and he had the advantage of having played high school football in Texas. It was his to lose, and he blew it. “I just remember walking back to that garage after, thinking, ‘This is where you’re going to live for the rest of your life, you loser,’ ” he says of a chapter he typically glosses over. “I had to really look at myself in the mirror and say, ‘I know you love movies, and I think you’ve got good instincts, but you may not be an actor.’ “
Then, little by little, acting gigs came. First it was Expendables 3 , then Oscar nominated Hidden Figures and Linklater’s Everybody Wants Some!! ; in between, he flexed his comedy chops as an elitist frat boy in Ryan Murphy’s Scream Queens . Eventually, Powell scored his first leading-man role in the rom-com Set It Up , though he’d had to convince the producers to let him so much as screen test opposite Emilia Clarke. (They’d wanted Zac Efron.) Then Clarke dropped out to do the Han Solo film — another project Powell got close on but didn’t land — and the whole thing almost fell apart. At his urging, Zoey Deutch stepped in, and the 2018 entry became a surprise hit for Netflix. People who didn’t used to return Powell’s calls were suddenly saying things like, “Hey, man, we got to get together.”
If you’ve seen Top Gun: Maverick — and with a $1.5 billion box office, it seems safe to assume you have — you know the part went to Teller. The news came as a major blow to Powell. Certain he was landing it, he had a buddy filming him in an American flag tank and aviators as he took the call from director Joseph Kosinski. “Not getting it was so wounding to me that I was like, ‘Oh, I care too much,’ ” says Powell, who later posted the soul-crushing image for his 1.6 million followers on Instagram. The producers offered him another role, but he wasn’t interested in the character as it was written. “I wanted him to be reminiscent of Val Kilmer [who played Iceman] — a guy who was having fun saving the day,” says Powell, who believes that what differentiates him as an actor is his ability to have a good time onscreen. “But I read the script, and I didn’t like this guy. He was just a dick, and he wasn’t even a good pilot.”
In the end, the producers listened to Powell’s ideas, and he had a hand in crafting the character, Hangman, that he ultimately agreed to play. He also learned how to make and market a blockbuster under the tutelage of his hero. Then the pandemic hit, and Cruise refused to let the studio dump Top Gun on a streamer. He knew he was sitting on a hit, and he had the leverage to hold out for what amounted to two years. Meanwhile, Powell was going broke. “I’d never made any significant amount of money on a movie, including Top Gun , and I was depleting a bank account to a point where my accountant was like, ‘This pandemic cannot last much longer,’ ” he says, acknowledging that the decision to wait for a theatrical release was ultimately the right one for the movie and the business at large. “But Tom was already Tom; I was waiting for my life to change.”
In that time, he brought a Texas Monthly article, about a mild-mannered professor who goes undercover as a fake hit man, to Linklater, with whom he’d collaborated three times already. When their adaptation premiered on the festival circuit last fall, it was snapped up by Netflix for a reported $20 million. Outlets like Vulture ran stories titled, “If Glen Powell’s Not Already a Star, This Movie Will Make Him One.” Jon Hamm, another Top Gun co-star and one of Powell’s many industry cheerleaders, is, frankly, shocked it took this long. “If you look up the definition of a movie star, it’s Glen,” he says. “The smile, the hair, the tan, the muscles, and he wants it and he loves it and he’s good at it.”
He and Sweeney were both keenly aware of how difficult it is to get people to a theater. “It’s something we talked about all the time: How do you create an event and also justify that experience?” he says. “Even if it’s me taking my clothes off on the side of a fricking cliff, it’s like, you got to do some shit in here that makes noise.” The pair managed to make noise offscreen, too. At one point, every gossip site, from “Page Six” to Deuxmoi, was running items about an on-set romance between Powell and Sweeney. Complicating the rumors, or perhaps sweetening them, was the fact that Sweeney remains engaged to one of the film’s producers and Powell was just coming out of a long-term relationship with model Gigi Paris. The headlines only contributed to interest in the film, which is why both stars decided to just lean into the rumors, flirting their way through promos and press junkets. But Sweeney, who produced the movie for Sony, was more accustomed to the tsunami of attention than Powell.
The movie came out over the holidays and started slow. Then, fueled by TikTok, it grew, and just kept growing. Powell felt the impact almost immediately. He’d walk into rooms and suddenly everybody seemed to be staring or, worse, discreetly snapping pictures. “I’m on the radar for the first time in my whole life, and it’s weird,” he says. “I mean, after Top Gun , a guy would literally be wearing a Top Gun shirt and I’d be talking to him, and it was clear he had no idea.” By March, he’d found the volume knob. Sweeney hosted Saturday Night Live and addressed the “obviously not true” rumors in her monologue, noting that her fiancé had helped produce the movie and was on set every day. “And I just want to let everyone know that he’s the man of my dreams,” she continued, “and we’re still together and stronger than ever.” Then she asked that the cameras cut to him, and Powell’s face appeared onscreen instead. This time, he was in on the joke. “It’s more fun once you understand where that knob is,” he says. “And I got to turn it up, and then I got to turn it down.”
But just because he’s seen the cycle of fame up close doesn’t mean that he’s comfortable moving through it. In fact, Powell increasingly has found himself questioning the authenticity of his relationships, be it his friendships or whatever attempts he’s made to date. (For now, the only one going home with Powell is his rescue dog Brisket, who, it seems worth noting, has 16,000 Instagram followers.) Retreating to Austin in a more permanent fashion was the advice of fellow Texan Matthew McConaughey. “He’s like, ‘Hollywood is the Matrix, man. You plug in and it’s all fake world,’ ” says Powell, who does a remarkably good McConaughey. “He’s like, ‘Then I go to Austin, and I unplug. It’s all real. Those are my friends, that’s my family, my actions matter there.’ And he’s right. If you’re here, you live in the Matrix all the time, there’s no separation of those worlds. And for me, especially as my parents get older and my niece and nephew are growing up, I want a separation of those worlds.”
So, Powell’s bought a house 30 minutes from his mom and executive coach dad, and that’ll be “home,” even if he logs more nights on film sets than anywhere else. As is, some combination of his parents and two sisters visit every project that Powell’s on, no matter where in the world he is. He suggests they’re a particularly rowdy bunch — people often think he’s exaggerating, he says, “until they see my mom, like, shotgunning beers in the fraternity house when I’m not there.” But they also keep him out of his head, and they make everything more fun. “I know we’re probably in his way sometimes, but you wouldn’t know it because he makes everyone feel loved and taken care of,” says his mom, Cyndy, who’s been an extra in most of his films.
Powell had every intention of moving the party to Austin this spring, combining the Hit Man premiere and his induction into the Austin Film Society’s Hall of Fame with a UT graduation. “I kept telling my friends I was going to throw the grad party of the century,” he says. But then his career exploded, and he could only carve out time for two of the four courses he needs to graduate. So, Spanish and Early American History will have to wait till next year; in the meantime, Powell will squeeze in a proctored exam between his work commitments. He’s also invited his dean to the Hit Man premiere — it wasn’t so that he’d get an extension on his final paper, but, he teases, “I think it didn’t hurt.” I ask Powell why, at this stage, he’s even bothering. “I think it’s really important to my mom and it’s more of an emotional thing for me,” he says. “Plus, I’m so close, I can taste it.”
Before Anyone But You hit, Powell’s dance card was already plenty full; in the months since, he’s been deluged with new opportunities and seemingly everything that he has ever touched, including a Broadway musical that he’s currently writing, feels like it’s being fast-tracked. “That’s the funniest part about this moment,” he says. “I’ve worked really hard for a long time, putting things together and just trying to get them in shape enough for people to give a shit. Then you get to a place where people are just like, ‘Yeah, let’s do it,’ and suddenly you’re playing musical chairs with yourself. You’re like, ‘Wait, do I sit in all these chairs right now ?’ “
Looking ahead, Powell is as definitive about what he won’t do — pandering Oscar bait, for one, but also Marvel fare — as he is about what he will. In fact, in relatively short time, he has garnered a reputation for being picky, primarily because he’s passed on a handful of recent tentpoles, including a Bourne Identity update and the Jurassic Park reboot at Universal. “ Jurassic is one of my favorite movies. It’s one of the things I’ve wanted to do my whole life. I’m not doing that movie because I read the script and I immediately was like, my presence in this movie doesn’t help it,” he explains. “And the script’s great. The movie’s going to fucking kill. It’s not about that. It’s about choosing where you’re going to make an audience happy and where you’re going to make yourself happy.”
When Powell and I connect again a month or so later, he’s crisscrossed the country a few times. He did Fallon’s show in New York, charmed some theater owners in Vegas and started to settle into the new place in Texas. “I think this is going to be good for my head, heart and soul,” he says by phone. He’s also lost the 15 pounds for that role, which has him weighing in at 175 … with days to spare. It was a lot of bone broth, for sure, but despite his threats, Powell was never going to give up — not on the diet, not on anything. In fact, he’s thinking maybe he can shed at least five more.
