Tour Overview
Cruise off the beaten path by UTV (utility terrain vehicle) to explore the Hell’s Revenge Trail on a 2.5 – 3.0 hour off-road adventure from Moab. With an experienced guide leading the way, you’ll navigate a Kawasaki Teryx 4 — a 4×4 vehicle equipped for traversing sandstone domes and slickrock ledges. The Hell’s Revenge Trail combines the thrill of steep climbs and descents with views of La Sal Mountains, Abyss Canyon, and the mighty Colorado River. Travel in a small group of up to four vehicles with a maximum of four people per vehicle.
What You Can Expect
- Meet your small group at your chosen departure time and hop into your 4-seater Kawasaki Teryx 4. After a safety briefing, slip behind the wheel (21 yrs. of age or older and valid drivers license) or take one of the passenger seats. Within 15 minutes of Moab, you are at the Hell’s Revenge Trail, full of steep ridges and roller-coaster terrain. Follow your experienced guide along a thrilling route that takes you crawling up a rock incline called the Devil’s Backbone. Hold on as your 4×4 jostles along the slickrock, formed from Navajo sandstone, before you descend into a low point in the narrow canyon, named Lake Michigan for the water that pools from rainfall.
- Next, make a brief stop at the fossilized dinosaur tracks near Lion’s Back before you proceed to Echo Canyon, also known as Abyss Canyon. Here, take in the views of towering sandstone cliffs above an oasis of cottonwood and willow trees.
- Get a look at Abyss Canyon before continuing off the beaten path to an overlook for dramatic views of the mighty Colorado River. On your way back to Moab, soak up more stunning vistas of the La Sal Mountains.

T-Rex 4x4 Tours
Great Adventure, excellent equipment and the tour guide "BEN" was very patient and made everyone feel comfortable. The trails are no joke, but felt very safe while on them. A must when visiting MOAB!!!
We love that you felt so comfortable and thought it was a great adventure on our tour. Thanks you SO much for booking with us. Hope to see you in the future!
We did a T-Rex 4x4 tour of Hell's Revenge. Wowzers!!! This is one of those never-to-be-forgotten life adventures for this city girl. There were 8 of us, including our 2 year-old in a car seat. My husband and I both drove a 4x4. From the very minute we hit the trail, my blood was pumping. The tour is guided with a GPS iPad, so at different parts of the tour there are sound effects and tidbits that make it even more fun. This is a must do activity in Moab. Our guide Tom was awesome and there was so much to see. Don't miss this!
Defied the laws of gravity! Ben was a great guide, sharing stories with our group. This is a MUST do for everyone visiting this beautiful area
Thanks for booking with us! We had a surreal time taking you guys. Hope to hear from you again!
This is a great company to take a 4x4 ride with through sand flats. The booking was easy (there's even an online coupon!) and follow-up was great communicating time and verifying date. The ride itself was scary, thrilling, and like nothing you can imagine. Our guide, Tom, was wonderful. He constantly made sure all the drivers were doing ok and took us on some daring routes. We even stopped to see dinosaur footprints. This is a "must-do" in Moab and would definitely recommend this company.
It's very appreciated that you guys decided to come with our company for unforgettable memories. Very glad you thought the tour is what is made to be- scary, thrilling and nothing you can imagine. Thank you! Hope to hear from you soon.
We did the T-REX Tour and was a blast. Ben was our guide and he know a lot and made the tour so fun. My son enjoy the tour with him a lot. The price for the tour is excellent. 100% Recommended. Also I recommend Ben as your guide. If the morning tour was excellent, unique and beautiful, I can imagine that the sunset tour its going to be spectacular too.
The morning tour sure is a unique way to start of your day! Thank you so much for coming with us, it was truly a pleasure. Hope to hear much more from you soon!
The only place in Moab that we found that allows you to drive. Ben our guide was brilliant. We stopped about 4 times on the way in where he explained about the history of the area, some facts and I think some fiction!! Then turned round and drove all the way back out. If you want to swap drivers check with your guide whens best to do it.
Having our customers drive has brought so much fun into our tour! We are so happy you guys got to experience it. Thank you so much for booking with us and we hope to hear from you again!

Online reviews - 5 Stars
Why Choose RRA? - 20 years of doing it right! Since 2003, when rafting operations began, we have gone on to expand our operations into rock and ice climbing, canyoneering, guided ski touring, travel trips and outdoor education. We have hosted over 85,000 guests and spent over 110,000 days in the field! We are so proud that this has garnered 5-star rankings across all online review sites. Land or water our clients rave about the quality of our guides, the depth of their knowledge, their ability to teach and most importantly, how incredibly fun each is. We believe our past guest's comments make the decision easy! Back to top
Your Safety is our number #1 concern
Since we started this journey in 2003 we have safely hosted 85,000+ kids and adults and spent over 100,000 days rafting, climbing, canyoneering and skiing in Utah and around the world. RRA guides are at a minimum state licensed, insured and hold first aid and CPR certifications. Many of our river guides hold additional certifications in swift water rescue and whitewater instruction. Many, though not all, of our rock, ice, ski and canyoneering guides are AMGA trained or certified for the terrain they guide.. Back to top
Quality Equipment
Do i need a reservation.
YES! To guarantee space on the trip of your choice, we recommend reservations, especially on holidays and summer weekends. In order to provide the type of trip the we have become known for we do limit the number of people on a launch and we do fill up. In addition a lot goes into the planning of a river trip, including scheduling of guides, drivers, packing lunch for full-day and lunch trips and ensuring that our equipment is always in top-notch condition. Make a reservation as soon as you have a good idea of when you want to raft with us and you'll avoid disappointment. Feel free to call us about reservations at any time @ 1-877-259-4046 or email. About Age Limitations
Which trip to choose.
We are thrilled to have the ability to offer such a wide variety or trips. We also realize that this can create confusion. We are a fantastic resource and look forward to helping you choose the trip that is perfect for you and your group. Please feel free to call or email with any questions you might have, we love to help. Often after a brief conversation with one of our staff the the answers become clear. Back to top
Where do we park/leave our things
There is plenty of secure parking on site at our offices. Valuables can be locked in your vehicles and will be perfectly safe for the duration of your trip. In addition we are more than happy to store anything that you may be extra concerned about in our offices while you are on the river. Back to top
Are there bugs
Thankfully there are usually very few to no bugs on our trips. The we travel through some of the driest terrain on the planet so there is generally no standing water for bugs to breed in. At the same time the current in the main river section is too swift to allow for breeding. This being said sometimes there are gnats or mosquitoes. Back to top
What to Bring
Red River Adventures tries to make your trip with us as easy as possible! What to bring is clearly outlined on the "what to pack" tab for each of our trips. We provide most, to all, necessary equipment for you to take part in our rock climbing, canyoneering and river trips. This includes all rock climbing and canyoneering equipment, boats and boating equipment, safety equipment, life jackets, guides, food, beverages, camping and kitchen equipment. In addition you are welcome to bring, or we can provide at NO ADDITIONAL COST, camping equipment including tents, sleeping bags and inflatable mattresses. You simply bring your own personal clothing and gear. We will provide trip specific lists to assist you in bringing the right things. Back to top
What the Weather is Like
Be prepared for hot (75-110 F degrees) weather during June, July, and August. You can expect cooler temperatures (55-90 F degrees) during April, May, September, and October. August is usually the wettest month (short-lived but intense thunder showers). April 73|42 May 84|50 June 85|58 July 101|64 Aug 98|63 Sept 89|53 Back to top
About Swimming and Fishing
Swimming is as much a part of a great river trip as whitewater and cooking out. Guests are more than welcome to swim on all our river trips. There is no better place to be on a hot summer day than swimming alongside one of our rafts. Catfish and Carp are plentiful in the Colorado and Dolores Rivers. Back to top
What Risks Are Involved
Red River Adventures has an unblemished safety record. We personally screen and train our employees vigorously each year. Each of our guides receives extensive instructions on safety, swift water rescue and first aid training. Our Climbing and Canyoneering guides are highly trained and many are AMGA certified. Our trips take place in rugged, remote "wilderness" settings. You should be in good general health to participate. Non-swimmers can go and are more than welcome. We provide Coast Guard approved life jackets for your safety. Back to top

River rafting reviews and red river adventure testimonials.
Really fun. Great experience. Kenzie was a great guide
Red River Adventures really went above and beyond with our excursion. Between the thoroughness of explaining the trip and safety protocols, the healthy lunch provided and the tour guide (June) we had an exceptional time and will for sure recommend to anyone we meet that is heading to Moab. Thank you for since an enjoyable trip :)
First timers, outdoor, multi-pitch full day climbing experience- Brian, our SLC guide, was incredibly friendly, knowledgeable and patient. His expertise allowed us to know exactly what he was doing while he guided us up routes that were appropriate for our skill level. The day few by and we enjoyed it so much that we plan on making a return guided trip with Brian.
Great experience. Guides were very energetic and positive and made me feel safe!
Kenzie was our guide and was fabulous. She talked down someone starting to panic perfectly and they were smiling to do the next rappel. She made the trip very enjoyable talking with all 4 parties and balancing her time with everyone, which i found impressive. She was very knowledgeable and made everyone feel safe. It was a great canyoneering route with small and big challenges. A great day for everyone. Would definitely use this guide service again.
Brought a group of elementary kids for a canyoneering trip. The guides were amazing and sensitive to what each student needed. We felt safe and in good hands the whole time. Would recommend.
Was a great experience! Kelsey was an awesome guide! Would highly recommend!
Best money I’ve ever spent! Couldn’t recommend crack camp enough. Mary, Sam and Britney were the best instructors I’ve ever had. The photographers were equally amazing as well. So much valuable knowledge passed down that I’m incredibly grateful for. I got everything I wanted and much more out of this crack camp. Will be returning for sure.
Did a raft trip and the bow and arrow canyoneering trip. The two guides were very safe and knowledgeable. We truly enjoyed both and would recommend the company to anyone.
Molly and Charbo are extremely nice and informative. We had a great time today. The rapids aren’t that challenging but the scenery is amazing!!
We did the the Bow and Arrow excursion with Red River. Our guide was awesome, lots of fun, and knew his stuff. It was a good little hike, not too intense, and had some fun repels. Would definitely recommend for others looking for some fun in Moab.
When booking our trip to Moab, we decided we wanted to do a couple of guided adventures. After researching local guiding companies, Red River was exactly what we were looking for. One day we went rock climbing with Brian at Looking Glass Arch. Brian was an awesome guide and made the experience very enjoyable for us! We just wish it was longer! The next day Charbo took us canyoneering to Morning Glory. The hike in, the rappels, and the hike out were great! Charbo was super knowledgeable and made everyone feel comfortable in the group. The whole process from booking the trips to showing up and being taken out was simple and efficient. I won’t hesitate to use them again the next time we are in Moab! Thanks again!
Oscar Hackworth was our Colorado rafting guide. He was next level! A five star, even “ten stars!” kind of guide. From his witty humor to his breadth of knowledge on historical information, our trip on the river was fun and interesting. Only wish we had more time with him such as like on a two day rafting trip. Would recommend!
We did the Rock of Ages Canyoneering tour with 5 teenage boys and ABSOLUTELY loved it. Our tour guide, Brian, connected with the boys and walked them through each repel and helped them get comfortable. This was an epic adventure for our group. Thanks!
Incredible experience splitboard touring for my wifes birthday. Very professional. Highly recommend.
John, an IFMGA Certified Mountain Guide led a backcountry tour for me today. It was a full on mountain adventure with extreme weather. My kind of day in the mountains. John is the epitome of what a guide should be. He is extremely personable, patient, fit, and a master of his profession. A Guide full of experience and knowledge. I learned an incredible amount of information today on mountain travel and avalanche related topics. He took the time to explain and ensure I understood the topics. He also shared tips and techniques that made my experience a 10 out of 10. I plan to hire John in the future. You can’t go wrong asking for John. He’s amazing!
Carl is a consummate professional backcountry ski guide. I always learn a ton and have fun in the process. I'll be back!
Honestly one of the best classes I’ve take, Jake and Vic are both through educators and great guides. If you’re looking to take a AIARE course these guys are great! I left feeling more prepared to deal with avalanche problems and identifying risks in the backcountry.
I had a great time with John at Red River Adventures doing a ski tour yesterday. We skied around Cardiff Fork in the Wasatch, he’s a tremendous guide, such attention to detail, I’ve gone on nearly a dozen trips with him. He and Carl at Red River make a dynamic team. They do rock climbing, skiing, alpine climbing, river guiding, you name it they do it. Keep it up folks!
Victoria was fun and was able to adapt for what suited our time for the day. Appreciated the rescue sled tips.
Jake and Ben were professional, informative and extremely helpful. Would recommend to anyone who feels apprehensive about taking an avalanche safety course.
Amazing experience with Sam on my first back country experience
Jake and Garth were both excellent instructors, and just a blast to hang out with for a weekend. It is super obvious they both care a ton about providing an impactful educational experience - but they also made the entire weekend very fun. Highly recommend.
Great experience during our rescue course.
It was a blast. Brain was really skilled and thoughtful.
Spent a day ice climbing with Red River. Excellent instruction, fun guide (ask for Brian!), all in all a great time. Will go again for sure! Thanks Red River!
Out of random coincidence, Sam had led me up a trail last year and strongly suggested I take this course, which was AWESOME! The experience and passion she and Jake bring to getting humans back safely and stoked is unparalleled. And the resources they walk you through and make available are profound. Can’t recommend Red River and these two strongly enough. If you’re serious about backcountry, this is an absolute must. I also really liked the small class size. Made a big difference. Looking forward to practicing my beacon finding at the resort.
Great day with Jake at Provo Canyon. Very skilled guides that go above and beyond. Highly recommend….
Alex was an awesome instructor. We had a great day going over all of the different avalanche rescue techniques.
Amazing guides who are knowledgeable and charismatic. Took an AIARE 1 class through them and it was an amazing time. I learned so much!
Amazing experience with John and Garth in our Avi 1 class. They were great teachers and I feel confident in the skills I acquired through their instruction.
Sam was a fantastic guide and instructor. Very skilled at building our skills in the backcountry!
John, Jeremy, and Garth are all awesome and taught a great course in a beautiful area. If you are taking AIRIE 1 and don't have skis/board or beacon/probe/shovel they will help you out and loan you what you need for the course!
Sam delivered an awesome rescue course!
I went on August 31st, Leaky was our guide. He was awesome and was very pleased with our white water rafting. Thanks so much
We did the full day with lunch and was extremely pleased! Our guide was outstanding, the trip was great and the food was delicious. Highly recommended.
No need to waste time reading this review when you could already be on their website signing up, but I suppose it's your time to waste, so here's the deal. A couple weeks ago, my friend suggested we go rafting in Moab together. She had previously done a trip with Red River Adventures a while back and loved it, so it seemed like a safe bet for my inaugural float. Simple sign up, fair prices, and knowledgeable guides. Pretty much a no-brainer. It totally held up. We had a blast with our guide, the absolutely incredible Molly. Her witty humor and kindness were only matched by her knowledge of the area and of the river itself. Between the named rapids, of which she had complete and utter control over, she kept the group entertained with fun little facts about the local geography, wildlife, and surrounding community. It was an even better experience than I had hoped for. One and only one complaint: On our way back to our vehicles after the trip, Molly gave our group some recommendations for restaurants in the area, including burgers at Milt's. It sounded like the perfect place for my friend and I to grab a quick bite on our way out of town since we were running short on time, so we stopped by. They were "temporarily closed." Molly, burgers are on you next time I see ya. ;)
We had a great day of rafting. Very well organized. Thanks to our guide Kira, she very professional and entertaining. Lunch was very good thanks to Leaky. Overall a perfect day.
Best rafting trip we've been on, and certainly not our first. Highly recommend
Definitely a Great day on the River. Leaky kept us entertained the whole journey and there can be some swimming. We did the full day which lasts much longer on the River and had a free lunch.
Had an awesome time rock climbing in Moab with Red River Adventures. Our guide, Ryan, was super cool and also professional and had safety as his #1 importance the whole time. Great temperatures and we were in the shade the whole time (did this approx 7:30am-12pm). Would definitely come again!
I had a blast!
We enjoyed the rafting very much. We had a great time, and I especially enjoyed the swimming on the side of the boat portion. I loved the trip and highly recommend it.
Very relaxing and fun float. Class 1 and 2 rapids were obviously pretty easy but Molly, our guide, was great and the view was spectacular.
Great experience!!!
We had the best morning on the water with Red River! We did the half day rafting trip on the Colorado through the canyon. The scenery was amazing, our guide Ryan (and all the guides) was great, we had lots of time for swimming, and it was a great intro into whitewater for my younger son. Top notch organization!
It was a lot of fun. I was not to sure what to expect but it was the best part of our trip. I would do the full day (I think its called 1/2 day). The information said it would be a bbq lunch but it was better than that. The lunch they provided was my favorite meal of our entire trip. Ryan was our guide and he did great and made it interesting and fun. 19/10 stars
We loved our experience at Red River Adventures! The guides were great - funny and provided lots of interesting facts along the way! Our kids age 12,10, 7 loved their first time white water rafting! Breathtaking views.
My two kids (9 and 11 years old) did the full day white water rafting and morning Bow and Arrow canyoneering adventures. We had an awesome time and they are already to visit Moab again!
Very fun! The ride is a tad shorter than anticipated. I would go for the full day trip. Lots of chances to swim and generally goof around.

Top ATV & UTV Tours in Moab
There are a few different ways you can experience off-road tours in Moab.
First, distinguish between a jeep tour and an ATV/UTV tour. Jeeps are generally larger and fit more people, but they’re also less nimble. For those who want to be in the driver’s seat, a UTV or ATV tour is the way to go. But I have a full guide to the best jeep tours if that’s what you’d rather do.
The difference between an ATV and a UTV is negligible, just that a UTV usually fits more people. But there are several ways for you to experience this.
- U-Drive Tours: You have the freedom to drive your own vehicle while being guided by a professional tour leader in a “lead car.” ( Our #1 top pick does this )
- Professional Driver: You sit back and enjoy the adventure while a professional driver takes you through the terrain. ( Our #2 top pick does this )
- Rent or Have your own vehicle: If you’ve got an off-road vehicle, bring it! But as most of us probably don’t casually have one at our disposal, you can also rent your own and take a self-driven tour.
1. Hell’s Revenge 4×4 Off-Roading Tour from Moab
Our #1 Top Pick for a Self-Driving Excursion
RATING: 5/5 Stars | LENGTH: 2-3 Hours | Book it!
Hop in your own UTV on this highly-reviewed, award-winning 5 star outing that takes you through the dramatic landscapes of Hell’s Revenge trail. Just south of Arches National Park, this is known for its heart-stopping obstacles and breathtaking views.
This off-road escapade jumps over sandstone domes and precariously over slickrock ledges with an experienced guide leading the way. But you will be the one navigating the steep climbs and descents in your own 4-passenger Kawasaki Teryx 4, a top-tier utility terrain vehicle designed just for terrain like this.
Steer through the Negro Bill Canyon and Abyss Canyon for views of the La Sal Mountains and the Colorado River. Drive along the roller-coaster route with inclines such as Devil’s Backbone. You’ll also see fossilized dinosaur tracks near Lion’s Back a nd get a nice vista from an overlook above the Colorado River.
Another plus is that they have 13 departures daily, with a lot of availability during the sunset hours. Accommodating a maximum of 19 travelers across four vehicles, each vehicle fits up to 4 passengers; 2 people minimum per vehicle.
2. Moab Xtreme 3-Hour Experience
Our #2 Top Pick for Adrenaline Junkies
RATING: 5/5 Stars | LENGTH: 3 Hours | Book it!
This Xtreme 3-hour Experience is truly one-of-a-kind. Imagine hitting deep potholes and steep inclines that make you think, “No way,” yet these vehicles conquer them. Just maybe with some air time.
You’ll be riding in a custom-fitted ATV with a roll cage , but due to the extreme nature of this tour, a professional driver will handle the challenging roads. This isn’t your typical “just you driving with a friend” adventure.
On the world-renowned Hell’s Revenge, this itinerary takes it even further with obstacles like “Mickey’s Hot Tub,” “Car Wash Hot Tub,” “Hell’s Gate,” and “Escalator.”
A professional driver, equipped with all the necessary safety gear and driving a top-of-the-line 4×4 vehicle, will guide a group of just 6 participants through the desert.
3. Private 4×4 Tour of Hells Revenge and Fins & Things Trail
Our #3 Top Pick for those who want a private trip
RATING: 5/5 Stars | LENGTH: 3.5 Hours | Book it!
Venture into Utah’s red rock backcountry with this private backcountry ATV tour that is fully customizable. Traverse two renowned trails, Fins N’ Things and Hell’s Revenge, with an expert guide at the helm.
Adjust your itinerary according to your preferences and schedule. Take a morning ride to kickstart your day or an afternoon trip to witness a fiery red sunset; the choice is yours.
Experience nature’s roller coaster as you tackle Hell’s Revenge Trail, navigating slick rocks, cliff faces, and near-vertical terrains. Then, explore Fins N’ Things, another thrilling trail with its own set of challenges and views.
This package includes refreshments and snacks with room for up to seven people , perfect for families or groups of friends. Three seats are available in the guide’s UTV and four more in the following UTV for a self-drive experience.
4. Hurrah Pass Scenic 4×4 Tour in Moab
Although not as popular as Hell’s Revenge, tackle the relatively “chiller” route with this self-driving Hurrah Pass Tour . You’ll still experience some of the most incredible views in all of Utah, just on a more mild dirt road.
Following a short training, these four-seater vehicles are a breeze to operate . Follow the trail for 15 minutes to reach Hurrah Pass Trail, passing ancient petroglyphs, the Colorado River, and historic Kane Creek.
With a guide, you’ll never lose your way. The voyage includes bottled water, a guide, and a UTV. Each vehicle has a 2-person minimum and 4-person maximum when signing up.
5. U-Drive Hells Revenge 4×4 Tour- Half Day 4.5 HR
RATING: 5/5 Stars | LENGTH: 4.5 Hours | Book it!
This U-Drive Hells Revenge 4×4 Tour is for those who don’t want the fun to end, so you want to extend it to a half-day, 4.5 hour adventure.
Be prepared for your tailbone to be sore and your hair wild as you traverse over rocky terrain and intense obstacles on Hell’s Revenge and Fins and Things Trails . With a guide leading the way, find freedom in the desert with views of the Colorado River Overlook.
Start your journey on the rolling hills of Fins N Things in the Sandflats Recreation Area. Halfway through, you’ll shift gears towards Hells Revenge, just south of the Arches National Park border.
Each reservation secures a 4-seater Kawasaki Tyrex 800, complete with bottled water and snacks.
Moab Travel Guide and FAQ
What’s the best time to go to moab.
From my experience, the ideal time to visit Moab is late spring or early fall when the weather is not scorching hot. Some adventurers like to go in the off-season for a quieter (and cheaper) feel, especially since the tourist rush at Arches starts sometime in April.
Why is Moab so popular?
Moab has gained popularity thanks to its unique red rock landscapes with an otherworldly backdrop to thrilling off-road trails and outdoor activities in two nearby national parks.
Are ATVs allowed in Moab?
Absolutely! Moab welcomes ATVs on its designated trails. But there’s a lot of backcountry to roam. However, if your vehicle is from out of state, you’ll have to get a permit to operate on public lands.
Where is the best place to ride UTVs in Moab?
The Fins N’ Things and Hell’s Revenge trails are typically considered the top spots for UTV riding in Moab – they’re both challenging and fun! But here are a few others:
- Hurrah Pass Trail
- Chicken Corners
- Behind the Rocks Trail
- Poison Spider Mesa Trail
What should I bring on a UTV adventure in Moab?
Come prepared with sunscreen, sunglasses, water, and maybe a bandana or mask for the dust. You definitely want your camera, and for it to be put in a dusk-proof bag if it’s a nice one. Depending on the length of your excursion, bring some snacks and drinks.
Can you ride ATVs in Arches National Park?
Unfortunately, no. To preserve its natural beauty and delicate arch formations, ATVs are not permitted within Arches National Park. But you can go for a jeep tour!
Do I need a permit to offroad in Moab?
No, you don’t need a permit to offroad in Moab. However, respecting local rules and regulations keeps this beautiful area safe and enjoyable for everyone.
Final Thoughts: UTV Tours in Moab
An UTV and ATV tour in Moab is unquestionably one of the best things you can do in town. Most of these trips are between two to three hours and have a lot of availability throughout the day, so it’s an easy addition to your day trip to Canyonlands or Arches itinerary.
In case you’re still not sure which to pick:
- See Hell’s Revenge by driving yourself; join this 4×4 tour !
- Grumble down the most extreme parts with a pro driver; sign up for this Extreme Offroad Moab Trip !
- Go on a private trip for just you and the fam and friends; book this Hell’s Revenge tour !

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)
<< Previous page
Pages: 379-406
In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.
Keywords: Tuva, Early Iron Age, early Scythian period, Aldy-Bel culture, barrow, burial in the coffin, mummy, full genome sequencing, aDNA

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.
Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.
Belfry and Neighbouring Churches
Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.
To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.
Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral
The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.
Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.
Tsaritsa's Chambers
The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.
At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.
Palace of Tsar Alexis
The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
