Luxury Cruises to Tahiti

The reality of Tahiti is as dreamy as the images the name conjures up: bottle green palm trees, plunging waterfalls, sparkling black-sand beaches, and aquamarine lagoons against a backdrop of spiky mountains. Little wonder that this island in the South Pacific is so popular with honeymooners.

During a luxury cruise to Tahiti, you’ll begin to understand how the colors, scents, and exotic allure of this beautiful island inspired creatives over the decades. Explore the dazzling underwater world, discover ancient sacred sites, head deep into the backcountry, or simply relax on a pristine beach in the tropical sunshine, succumbing to the island’s seductive charms.

Tahiti Cruise Highlights

Lagoons & reefs.

Tahiti’s warm, clear water is perfect for snorkeling and diving. A string of islets and teeming coral reefs protect shallow lagoons, where you can swim and snorkel among rays, black-tipped reef sharks, sea turtles, and dazzling reef residents, like the orange-and-white clownfish. You could see dolphins and whales, too. Join a catamaran tour for a day and jump straight off the boat into the blue-green depths, the reefs dappled by sunlight.

History & Heritage

On a Tahiti cruise, you’ll have the chance to visit one of the most sacred places in French Polynesia, Arahurahu Marae. This ancient stone structure is still in use by locals as a place for the reenactment of traditional ceremonies. You can also see Point Venus, where 18th-century explorers Captains Cook, Wallis, and Bligh made their way ashore after anchoring off the island. For a glimpse into more modern history, visit the former home of author James Norman Hall.

Lush Landscapes

Tahiti’s most obvious allure may be its beaches and lagoons, but the interior of the island is a paradise of cascading waterfalls, dense rainforest, and tropical flowers, the scent of gardenia and frangipani heavy in the air. Take a four-wheel-drive tour to the green Papenoo Valley, surrounded by mountains, and stop for a refreshing dip in the river.

Tahiti Cruise Itineraries

On a cruise to Tahiti, you’ll visit the capital of Papeete on an itinerary lasting either 17 or 18 nights. Cross the Pacific, sailing between Honolulu and Sydney, Australia, calling at exciting ports along the way including Raiatea and Moorea in French Polynesia; Maui; and Auckland, New Zealand. You’ll also have several days at sea to relax into the rhythms of life on board, enjoy the ship, and commune with the ocean.

Itineraries

Why cruise to tahiti with celebrity cruises.

Soak up the intoxicating scenery of the South Pacific on a cruise with Celebrity. When you’re not exploring ashore, there’s no shortage of delights on board, from a shimmering pool to the romantic Sunset Bar, where you can raise a glass to the end of another blissful day.

Relax on the grass of the Lawn Club, the perfect place to read, tuck into a picnic, or challenge fellow guests to a game of croquet. Choose The Retreat for the ultimate in luxurious travel, with all-suite accommodation, an exclusive private lounge, and dining in the chic Luminae at The Retreat.

Home » Experiences » Cruising in The Islands of Tahiti

Published on 25 August 2023

Reading time: 4 min.

Embark on a cruise ship, and sail from island to island in the warm blue waters of French Polynesia . Visit some charming, less-frequented ports of call, as well as many of the more famous islands, such as Bora Bora and Moorea . Every morning you’ll be waking up in a different island paradise, and evey day will be another unforgettable experience.

An island hopping cruise is a marvelous way to explore The Islands of Tahiti . You sail into the turquoise waters of a lagoon, before going ashore to discover the archeological and geographic wonders and enjoying the different excursions and nautical activities proposed by the local population. Then as night falls, you weigh anchor and set sail for the next island paradise. Cruise companies in Tahiti offer a choice of itineraries, all of which sail out of Papeete . The Aranui and the Paul Gauguin are two exceptional cruise ships operating in the waters of French Polynesia. The Aranui is a cargo ferry which serves the mystical Marquesas Islands , taking passengers and freight to the ‘Land of Men’. It offers a unique insight into life on these remote, isolated islands. The Paul Gauguin has a seven night, luxury cruise to the Society Islands , and a fourteen night cruise that also includes the Marquesas and Tuamotu Islands .

Unique and authentic cruises

Embarking on the Aranui is the beginning of an adventure that will take you far off the beaten track. This cargo ferry will take you to some of the most remote islands in the ‘Land of Men’, as the Marquesas Islands are known. The ship is a lifeline that connects the islanders to the outside world, delivering every type of merchandise you can imagine. The atmosphere on board is warm and friendly, with a mostly Marquesan crew. The panorama from the top deck is simply magnificent, especially when the Marquesas Islands first come into view.

Comfortable rooms © Tahiti Tourisme

The Paul Gauguin is a cruise ship that belongs to the Ponant cruise company. The ship was specially designed for navigating in the waters of French Polynesia, and its shallow draught gives it access to lagoons in The Islands of Tahiti that are inaccessible for most of the bigger cruise ships. The truly luxurious interior decoration is matched by the first class service from the mainly Polynesian crew. The Paul Gauguin has 165 cabins, including a number of sumptuous suites and luxury suites. The Aranui has 103 cabins. There are several other cruise companies that have recently added The Islands of Tahiti to their schedules, notably the Windstar, Oceania Cruises and Variety Cruises. All of these cruise ships sail out of Papeete.

A floating vacation in French Polynesia

Sailing through the waters of French Polynesia on a cruise ship, sailboat or catamaran, is a truly authentic way to discover The Islands of Tahiti . It is exactly how the first Polynesians explored them, navigating from one island to the next, about two thousand years ago.

Croisière à bord du Paul Gauguin © Tahiti Tourisme

If you aren’t on a cruise vacation, there are plenty of other ways to enjoy the beautiful lagoons of The Islands of Tahiti . You can take a boat excursion and visit some of the motu ; go sailing on a traditional outrigger sailing canoe ; rent a small catamaran or sailboat; paddle across the lagoon on a kayak or a paddleboard. And of course, you can always enjoy swimming and snorkeling in the beautiful warm, turquoise water.

Complete guide to sailing from Papeete, Tahiti, French Polynesia

Andrea M. Rotondo

Admit it. You've dreamed of jetting off to Tahiti to trade in everyday life for a luxury cruise around French Polynesia. You've dreamed of visiting Bora Bora, the home of the overwater bungalow, and you've heard tales of the wonderful food trucks in and around Papeete that serve incredible local delicacies. You want to go pearl shopping in Taha'a and climb Belvedere Lookoutin Moorea. A variety of cruise lines can help you achieve all of those dreams from the Tahiti cruise terminal.

Being the only international commercial port in French Polynesia, Port Autonome de Papeete on Tahiti accommodates a wide range of vessels, from cruise ships to cargo freighters to luxury yachts. It's also the largest cruise port in the French overseas territory and serves about 2 million cruisers annually (pre-pandemic).

In addition to multi-night cruises, Papeete port is also the embarkation point for regular ferries to Moorea and Bora Bora.

Despite the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the region is welcoming international visitors. Here's everything you need to know about French Polynesia's reopening .

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter.

Port Autonome de Papeete BP 9164 Motu Uta Papeete, Tahiti 98714 French Polynesia

Tip: If you're traveling to Papeete from the United States, you'll fly from Los Angeles, San Francisco or Honolulu. The mainland's flight duration is about eight hours, while it's about a six-hour trip from Hawaii. Those are long-haul flights and -- especially if you started from the East Coast -- you'll be tired when you land. Be sure to arrive a few days before your cruise embarks so you can enjoy a hotel and get over your jet lag .

Who sails from Papeete?

tahiti cruise ship

Two cruise ships -- Paul Gauguin Cruises Paul Gauguin and Winstar Cruises' four-masted luxury motor-sail-yacht Wind Spirit -- homeport out of Papeete. Typically, these ships offer seven-night or longer itineraries to neighboring islands in French Polynesia and beyond.

Paul Gauguin Cruises (owned by Ponant) specializes in French Polynesia cruises. It's all the line offers. Its voyages explore the Society and Cook islands as well as the Marquesas and Tuamotus. The 332-passenger Paul Gauguin also sails to Fiji and Tonga and sometimes calls on Melanesia and Indonesia's ports.

The seven-night Tahiti and Society Islands itinerary sails round-trip out of Papeete and calls on Huahine, Taha'a and the private Motu Mahana as well as overnights in Bora Bora, Moorea and Papeete.

Windstar's Wind Spirit is the epitome of small-ship cruising, with just 148 passengers per sailing. Its most popular French Poly itinerary is its seven-night round-trip cruise out of Tahiti that calls on Moorea, an overnight in Raiatea, Taha'a and the private Motu Mahana, an overnight in Bora Bora and a day in Huahine.

tahiti cruise ship

In 2022, Windstar's Star Breeze yacht will also sail more than a dozen seven-, 10-, 11- and 18-night voyages from Papeete.

Aranui 5, a mixed cargo (passenger/freight) ship, also homeports in Tahiti and takes passengers from Papeete to the Marquesas archipelago, Tuamotu Islands and Bora Bora in the Society Islands.

Ferries are also available at the Tahiti cruise port and they regularly carry passengers to neighboring Moorea and Bora Bora.

Despite the few ships that homeport here, Papeete can get busy, as it is a port of call for ships of many cruise lines. In 2022, for example, the following lines plan to call on Tahiti: Carnival, Cunard, Holland America, MSC Cruises, Oceania Cruises, Princess, Royal Caribbean Seabourn and Silversea.

Nearest airport

Faa'a international airport (ppt).

tahiti cruise ship

The Port Autonome de Papeete lies roughly 3 miles east (about 15 to 20 minutes) of the Tahiti-Faa'a International Airport (PPT), which is the only international airport in French Polynesia.

Five airlines fly out of U.S. airports, including:

  • Air France from Los Angeles (LAX) -- Book with cash or Flying Blue miles or miles from any SkyTeam partner.
  • Air Tahiti Nui from Los Angeles (LAX) -- Book with cash or American Airlines AAdvantage miles.
  • French Bee from San Francisco (SFO) -- Book with cash.
  • Hawaiian Airlines from Honolulu (HNL) -- Book with cash or Hawaiian Airlines or American AAdvantage miles.
  • United from San Francisco (SFO) -- Book with cash or United MileagePlus miles or miles from any Star Alliance partner.

Air Tahiti Nui, Air France and French Bee also fly out of Vancouver (YVR), Canada.

Cruise line transfers

As Paul Gauguin cruises are all-inclusive, prices already include a flight from LAX to Tahiti on Air Tahiti Nui round-trip airport/pier transfers. (Note: If you prefer to book your own flights, ask for the cruise-only fare.)

If you booked your cruise with Windstar Cruises, ask about buying transportation from the airport or hotel to the port unless you booked your pre-cruise hotel through Windstar Easy Stays, which takes care of your transfers to and from the ship terminal.

If you're sailing on Aranui 5, you can arrange to get to the port via taxi.

Hotel shuttles

Paul Gauguin's Extend Your Trip program includes a pre-/post-cruise hotel stay as well as transfers from the airport to the hotel and from the hotel to the cruise port. Aside from that and Windstar's Easy Stays program, you're hard-pressed to find hotels offering shuttle service to the pier unless you're willing to pay for private or group transfers.

Car rentals

tahiti cruise ship

If you like to explore on your own, you can rent a car, SUV or scooter on Tahiti from a local agency like Ecocar Ecoscoot Tahiti Aeroport .

Daily rental rate starts from around $40 for an "economic" car, such as the Fiat Panda, which seats four people. Rate includes insurance, unlimited mileage, an infant or child seat and even free delivery during limited hours (subject to availability).

Independent van and car services

It's also possible to book a private car or van for your transportation needs on Tahiti. Marama Transports Touristiques is a good choice since its vehicles can accommodate groups of eight or more. Its fleet consists of Hyundai and Mercedes minivans, Porsche SUVs, Land Rover 4WD vehicles, Mazda 4x4s and Chrysler 300 sedans.

Taxi and ride-hailing services

If you're not traveling by rental car or van in Papeete, your best alternative would be a taxi; ride-hailing services aren't available here yet. What's good about taxis in Tahiti, and even in neighboring Moorea, is that the rates are regulated (warning: PDF link) by the government, so you'll know what the trip should cost before you even get into the taxi.

Taxis charge a minimum of 1,000 XPF (about $10) any time of day. The per kilometer price during the day (6 a.m. to 8 p.m.) is 130 XPF (about $1.50); at night (8 p.m. to 6 a.m.), it's 230 XPF (around $2.50).

Additional charges may apply for luggage, uphill rides and long waiting times.

Public transportation

tahiti cruise ship

Tahiti has a bus service called "Le truck." It operates on a regular schedule on a route that mainly follows the coastline. Buses operate from Mondays to Saturdays only, so if you arrive on a Sunday or during public holidays, you'll have to arrange alternate transport in advance.

With a mostly local clientele, the buses only take CFP francs, so make sure to have enough cash to pay for your fare beforehand.

Where to stay

With Tahiti's interior being a mountainous paradise, tourists should seek accommodations along the coastline. You'll find hotels from Mahina to Pa'ae, but most congregate in and around Papeete's downtown area, which is conveniently near the cruise port.

One hotel, the InterContinental Resort Tahiti, even offers airport views for you AvGeeks !

Note that many Tahiti hotels are bookable via cash or Ultimate Rewards points via the Chase travel portal .

Where to shop near the port

The cruise port in Motu Uta doesn't have any shops on its premises, so you'll have to visit nearby establishments. Fortunately, there are many shops close by.

Marche de Papeete (Papeete Market)

tahiti cruise ship

Just a stone's throw away from the waterfront stands Marche de Papeete (BP4588, Papeete), the local public market that has been selling an assortment of local Tahitian products and produce for more than 150 years. Also serving as a cultural center of sorts, the Papeete Market provides an inside look into the Polynesian islands within its two levels.

On the ground floor, vendors sell fresh fruits, local vegetables and flowers, handcrafted items and more. Be on the lookout for vanilla beans, black pearls and monoi products (soaps, shampoos, creams and oils), which are made from a mixture of gardenia tahitensis and Nucifera coconut oils. If you arrive around 4 p.m., you should spot some colorful fish being brought in from fishing boats.

The second floor is reserved for artisans selling tifaifai wall hangings or quilts, pareos, carvings, embroidered items and other handicrafts. There are also vendors hawking their products, such as leis and Tiare Tahiti flower crowns, outside the market.

If you're feeling hungry, an on-site cafeteria serves local dishes. Early Sunday mornings are a great time to grab breakfast here. That could include some coconut-flavored donuts called firi firi , pua'a roti (roasted pork) and chao pao , which are stuffed steamed buns.

The Papeete Market is open from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily and until 9 a.m. on Sundays, which can get a bit busy as Tahitian families drop by the market to shop ingredients for their Sunday feast.

Vaima Shopping Center

Vaima Shopping Center on Avenue du Marechal Foch, about 2 miles away, is a Tahitian mall where you can find various goods (including pearls) and services at reasonable prices. (You can see the mall from the cruise terminal and it's about a 30-minute walk.) The mall also features Le Kiosk Tahiti (Papeete 98714), which sells atlases, stamps, tourist maps and souvenir cards.

A little further away but still within a 10-minute drive is Champion at Rue du General de Gaulle , behind the Temple Protestant de Paofai. The Champion Supermarket sells fresh pastries if you're feeling peckish, as well as spices and other products; plus, it has longer operating hours -- until 7:30 p.m. Also, there are three Carrefour supermarkets in Tahiti: Carrefour Arue, Carrefour Faa'a - Pacific Plaza and Oasis Carrefour Arue.

Where to Tahitian buy pearls

If you're on the hunt for pearls, try Tahia Exquisite Pearls at Boulevard de la Reine Pomare IV (about 1.5 miles from the cruise port). The store features jewelry adorned with Tahitian pearls, 18-karat gold and pave diamonds. The Tahiti Pearl Market (Rue Colette, BP3396 PPT, Papeete), about 1.5 miles from the port, is another good spot to find some pearls. The family-owned establishment allows you to pick your pearls and the design you want, with the final product available within a few hours.

Nearby drugstores

For any drugstore-related purchases, you can head to Pharmacie du port (1 Rue Paul Gauguin), Pharmacie Prince Hinoi Papeete (Avenue Prince Hinoi Papeete) and Pharmacie Fariipiti (Papeete 98714). All are within 2 miles of the port.

Where to eat

Tahiti's cuisine highlights the fresh seafood and produce that are abundant on the island. Fish, such as mahi mahi, tuna and grouper, are mainstays in restaurant menus. In addition, Tahitian cuisine also features French and Asian influences.

One of Tahiti's top restaurants is Le Lotus at the InterContinental Tahiti Resort, 6 miles from the cruise port. Set in an over-the-water building, Le Lotus serves French and Polynesian cuisine, featuring freshly caught seafood (catch of the day), meat dishes and a selection of French wines. The romantic ambiance, one filled with candlelight, live piano music and spectacular sunset views, is perfect for a night out -- especially if you've got something to celebrate.

Another restaurant that combines good food with an amazing sunset view is O Belvedere . From its perch some 2,000 feet above Papeete, take in the city's sunset views below and even Moorea beyond. The restaurant has a treehouse ambiance, with its outdoor terrace even built around a tree trunk. A "must-order" is the house specialty: fondue Bourguignonne served with six sauces. With its location in Pira'e about 4 miles from the port, it's nice that the restaurant provides round-trip transportation from hotels and back, or to the airport if you have a flight to catch.

You don't need to go far to eat good food, though. Come evening, head to Place Vai'ete (369 Boulevard de la Reine Pomare IV), a portside plaza about 2 miles from the port, to take part in perhaps the most popular ritual of Papeete: roulettes or food trucks . At 6 p.m., colorful food trucks start rolling in and, within a few minutes, vendors start whipping up big portions of dishes from fresh ingredients for the crowds, locals and tourists alike, which have started to gather.

tahiti cruise ship

You'll find all sorts of food here at affordable prices, from fresh Polynesian fish dishes to French classics, as well as pizza and burgers, Thai curries and Chinese stir-fries, such as "chao mein." Must-tries include the poisson cru , a Tahitian specialty of fresh raw fish with coconut milk and cold vegetables similar to poke or ceviche; brochettes or kebabs; and steak frites and poulet frites—charbroiled steak and chicken, respectively— with french fries. If you're not here for a meal, grab a crepe or waffle and enjoy the sunset.

To order, simply go up to the truck and once your food is ready, take it to one of the plastic tables. Don't forget to bring cash (the local currency is Pacific Francs), as the roulettes don't accept credit cards.

Sights to see

While a known honeymoon destination, Tahiti's sights and attractions also welcome the entire family. Cruise passengers passing through the island have plenty of options, from shopping and dining to sightseeing and outdoor activities. Here's what we recommend.

Point Venus (lighthouse and beach)

Undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places in Tahiti, Point Venus wasn't named after the Roman goddess but after a historic event that transpired in 1769, when Captain James Cook and the rest of the crew of Bounty observed the transit of the planet Venus — a once-in-a-century happening — from the site.

However, the lighthouse, Phare de la Pointe Venus, wasn't built until about a hundred years later and remains to be Tahiti's sole lighthouse. It stands several feet away from Pointe Venus Beach, whose black sand is a popular setting for picnics. If you'd like to have a memento of your visit, take a look at the on-site souvenir shop, and grab a bite to eat at the snack bar if you're feeling peckish. Point Venus is at the northernmost part of the island, more than 8 miles from the cruise port.

Faarumai Waterfall

A hiking and sightseeing trip in one, the journey to Faarumai Waterfall takes you through the village of Tiare on Tahiti's north coast. Roughly 15 miles from the cruise port, Faarumai Waterfall actually consists of three cascades (Faarumai Waterfall is also known as The Three Cascades).

To see the first one, Vaimahutu, you'll have to hike through a mape (a type of chestnut) forest for about 325 feet. The second and third falls, Haamarere It and Haamarere Rahi, respectively, are almost side by side and can be accessed after a 20-minute walk. Parking and admission are free. However, swimming is prohibited so just enjoy the view. Don't forget to bring insect repellent to avoid stinging mosquito bites.

There are many lovely gardens to explore when on the island, including:

Water Gardens Vaipahi

tahiti cruise ship

Perhaps the best place to enjoy the island's tropical flora is at the Water Gardens of Vaipahi (Teva I Uta), along the southern coast of Mataiea, roughly 30 miles from the cruise port. The garden features more than 75 tropical plant species, including exotic flowers, from around the world, as well as winding streams, springs, pools, waterfalls and a lily pad. The plants are marked with signs in both English and French.

This tranquil place is also sacred to Tahiti's Great Teva clan, who believe their deceased souls must be purified by the waters of Vaipahi. The well-maintained and quiet environment is a good place to meditate or simply relax amid nature. A walk along one of its three paths, ranging from a 1.2 mile/one-hour walk to a 3.1 mile/two-hour walk, will be invigorating. Admission is free and there is parking available on site.

Paofai Gardens

If you'd rather stay close to Papeete and the cruise port, head out to Paofai Gardens instead. It's by the boulevard, so there will still be traffic noises, but it's a peaceful enough place for a stroll along the waterfront. There are paved walking paths, and the area features planter boxes with some blooms and several trees. Along the shore, you might find some pirogues (outrigger canoes), and if you're timing is right, i.e., afternoons and Sunday mornings, you might catch local teams practicing racing on them.

There are also some very interesting museums on Tahiti.

Museum of Tahiti and The Islands

If you want to learn more about Tahiti and French Polynesia, in general, the Museum of Tahiti and Her Islands (Musee de Tahiti et des Iles) in Puna'auia is a good place to do so. Here, concise and easy-to-understand exhibits explore Tahiti's geography and natural history, its pre-European culture, the effects of colonization and its natural wonders. There are displays in English, too. Must-sees include its collection of ritual items, canoes, tattooing equipment and statues of wood or stone depicting various divinities called tiki.

After you visit the museum, step outside to observe surfers on the water or Moorea beyond. Or, peruse the gift shop, which other visitors said was excellent.

Robert Wan Pearl Museum

Pearl pioneer Robert Wan's Pearl Museum (56 Avenue du Commandant Destremau, Papeete 98713) isn't only a place to learn about pearls. Here, you can buy them too.

The museum features myriad treasures, such as a copy of the rosary beads with 57 pearls that were presented to Pope John Paul II in 1987 and Charles II of France's pearl-encrusted prayer book. Meanwhile, the retail section offers jewelry, single pearls and, of course, Tahitian black pearls of the highest quality and original designs. It also sells skin products with extracts of nacre, the mother-of-pearl shell. The museum provides free tours for groups of two or more. Let them know of your visit at least five days in advance.

Bottom line

With a paradise island setting, Tahiti is the perfect place to relax and unwind, albeit for just a little bit. Cruisers who stopover here may want to stay closer to Papeete due to time constraints, but those who'd like to extend their stay will have the rest of the island to explore. And, for the uninitiated, Tahiti is a great place to learn more about Polynesian culture.

The heart of Papeete is perhaps its waterfront and port with its rows of docked boats. There is a walk-able promenade along the port, and this is the scene where many of the city's festivals take place. At night, the waterfront often plays hosts to "roulottes" or Tahitian dinners accompanied by festival-like, Polynesian performance shows. Papeete the largest cruise port in French Polynesia (overseas territory of France since 1946). It is located on Tahiti Island (the largest of Windward Islands) and annually handles around 2 million cruise ship tourists. Papeete Town has total area approx 17 km2 (7 mi2) and population around 26,000.

City's growth was boosted after moving the nuclear weapon test range from Algeria to the attols Mururoa and Fangataufa - approx 1500 km (930 mi) to the east of Tahiti. This led to the building of Faaa International Airport - opened in 1962, and located just 5 km (3 mi) southwest from downtown Papeete. Faaa is currently the only international airport in French Polynesia. Faaa Airport is served by the airlines:

  • Air Tahiti (domestic inter-island flights only), Aircalin ( Noumea New Caledonia )
  • Air Tahiti Nui (connecting with Auckland NZ , Los Angeles USA , Paris , Tokyo )
  • Air France (with Paris, Los Angeles USA)
  • Air New Zealand (with Auckland)
  • French Bee (with Paris, San Francisco USA )
  • Hawaiian Airlines (with Honolulu )
  • LATAM Chile (with Easter Island , Santiago )
  • United Airlines (with San Francisco USA)

Regularly scheduled ferries connect Papeete with Moorea and Bora Bora . Port's high cruising season is June-August. Papeete is included in the cruise ship schedules of major luxury cruise companies like Princess , Oceania , Silversea , RSSC-Regent , Seabourn , Windstar . Papeete is often visited on repositioning cruises between Australia and Alaska (usually via Hawaii).

As homeport for Paul Gaugin Cruises, Papeete serves turnarounds (roundtrip itineraries) by MS Paul Gaugin to French Polynesian destinations in Marquesas, Tuamotus and Society Islands. In Papeete are also homeported two of world's most famous "cargo cruise ships" - Aranui 3 (2002) and Aranui 5 (2015). Both are Ro-Pax vessels offering Papeete cruise itineraries (2-week long roundtrips) visiting ports in Marquesas and Society Islands.

In 2018, the cruise port reported a record season with handled 1070 ship calls (including 140 roundtrips). In 2019, cruise shipping traffic increased by ~15%. In 2018, Port Papeete started offering new fly-cruise package via partnership with the airlines United (USA Chicago -based) and French Bee (France Paris -based).

Windstar Cruises Plans Significant Capacity Increase in Tahiti

  • April 16, 2024

Star Breeze

Windstar Cruises is increasing its capacity in Tahiti and French Polynesia.

After several years sailing in the region on a year-round basis, the Wind Star was recently replaced by the larger Star Breeze .

According to Windstar Cruises’ President Christopher Prelog, the arrival of the 312-guest ship doubles the company’s guest capacity in the region, while also allowing for longer itineraries to farther ports of call.

“It also adds all the suites and amenities of a luxurious Star Class ship to French Polynesia,” he added during a press conference in Miami on Wednesday.

The new program includes a brand new 14-night cruise to the Marquesa Islands, which is set to be offered in the summer of 2024 and 2025.

Capacity in the region is set to increase even further in 2027 with the Wind Star returning to Tahiti to sail alongside the Star Breeze.

“We are doubling down. It’s been an idea for a couple of years and now is the right time to do it,” Prelog said.

One of the factors that allow the company to add another ship to the region in 2027 is the addition of two new ships to its fleet, Prelog said, mentioning the Star Seeker and the Star Explorer.

The arrival of the second ship will allow Windstar to offer multiple different cruise lengths, more destinations and distinct experiences in Tahiti and French Polynesia.

“We are really excited about that because it really offers the romance of the sailing ships, as well as the luxurious amenities of the Star Class,” Prelog said.

Windstar Cruises is also adding more options for pre- and post-cruise extensions in Tahiti, with new hotels joining the company’s lineup, including seven properties managed by Pacific Beachcomber.

According to Prelog, Windstar has been sailing in the French Polynesia region for more than 35 years.

Princess Cruises and Fincantieri Announce to Postpone Delivery of Star Princess

By downloading this image you agree to the Princess asset use terms and conditions

MONFALCONE, Italy, (April 19, 2024) – Princess Cruises and ship builder Fincantieri today announced the mutual decision to postpone the delivery of the next Sphere Class ship, Star Princess.

Following a comprehensive review of the remaining construction milestones, both parties have elected to adjust the ship's delivery date from July 29, 2025 to September 26, 2025, which will result in the cancellation of the nine inaugural sailings.

“Despite our collective dedication and relentless pursuit to deliver the ship in late July, it has become evident that additional time is required to ensure the Star Princess is delivered to the highest standards expected by our guests,” said John Padgett, president of Princess Cruises.

The new inaugural sailings of Star Princess will sail roundtrip from Barcelona and include an 11-day Mediterranean voyage on October 4, 2025, and a 7-day Mediterranean voyage on October 15, 2025, that precede a 14-day transatlantic crossing to Fort Lauderdale on October 22, 2025 for the ship’s first Caribbean season. These three new cruises will open for sale on April 30, 2024.

Guests who are booked on any of the impacted voyages will be given three options: book any Princess cruise worldwide, including aboard the new Star, sister ship Sun Princess, or any other Princess ship.

Guests who elect to rebook will receive future cruise- and onboard-credits depending on the cruise they select.  Guests will also have the option to cancel and receive a full refund of the cruise fare.

Princess will protect travel agent commissions on all bookings that have been paid in full.

Star Princess is the second in the new Sphere Class of ships for Princess. Sister ship Sun Princess, built by Fincantieri in Monfalcone, debuted in February and is hailed as the next level Love Boat featuring the iconic and elegant structural lines Princess is known for, while delivering an evolution of the brand with new eye-catching architectural spectacles like The Dome, the cruise industry’s first geodesic feature on the top deck, and The Sphere, the suspended glass Sphere Piazza at the center of the cruise ship.

More details on both Sphere Class ships can be found at  www.princess.com/sunprincess .

This Small-ship Cruise Line Just Announced 2 New All-suite Vessels Will Join Its Fleet

Windstar Cruises is scheduled to launch Star Seeker in 2025 and Star Explorer in 2026.

Boutique small-ship cruise line Windstar Cruises is growing its fleet, adding two 224-passenger vessels — both acquisitions from Mystic Cruises —  in the next two years. Star Seeker is slated to make its debut in December 2025 and Star Explorer is scheduled to follow a year later in December 2026.

Star Seeker is under construction, while Star Explorer is currently sailing as Quark Expeditions' World Explorer. B oth ships will be reworked to include signature features of Windstar ships, from a watersports platform to Owners Suites with wraparound balconies to a whirlpool on the bow.

Dining, in particular, will be a main focus on the ships, as Windstar has a partnership with the James Beard Foundation. The ships' dining options spaces will be expanded to include the on-deck Star Grill, the casual Yacht Club café and lounge, and a re-imagined Amphora main dining room, which will now have outdoor seating.

“Our goal was to ensure these ships are unmistakably Windstar, and a significant amount of effort has gone into achieving this,” Christopher Prelog, Windstar Cruises’ president, said in a statement provided to Travel + Leisure . “We are thrilled for this expansion, building on the success of our game-changing Star Class in small-ship cruising with guests and travel partners, while offering new experiences. This growth reflects the dedication of our incredible crew and team, allowing us to broaden our destination portfolio and even bring one of our Wind Class sail ships back to Tahiti.”

Though both ships have ice-strengthened hulls capable of sailing in the polar regions, Windstar doesn't currently operate such itineraries, focusing primarily on the Americas, Europe, and the Pacific Islands. But these new ships may open doors to adventures in the years to come.

“As part of our company’s expanding portfolio, Windstar Cruises is poised for remarkable growth and an exciting future ahead," Andrew N. Todd, president and CEO of parent company Xanterra Travel Collection, said in a statement. "We’re excited about the possibilities of where Windstar will sail and the opportunities it brings our officers, crew and staff, and our guests.”

Itineraries and booking information for Star Seeker will be announced in June 2024. You can sign up for updates at windstarcruises.com/newships .

Ten of the best small-ship cruises

Not a fan of mega-ships our cruise expert has picked the best boutique sailings to keep things exclusive and adventurous.

Nassau, Bahamas

T here’s something special about small-ship cruising. You’ll feel a deeper connection to the sea, and there’s a certain pleasure from being docked in chic little ports among the superyachts or anchored in a remote bay far from the crowds. Of course, there won’t be Broadway shows and a choice of restaurants, but simplicity is all part of the appeal. Here are ten of the best small-ship cruises for this year and next.

1. Authentic Caribbean

Le Ponant sailing yacht

Explore some of the tiniest islands in the Caribbean on Ponant’s smallest ship: the swish, recently refurbished sailing yacht Le Ponant, which carries just 32 passengers. Sail from Marigot on St Martin to Prickly Pear Cays on Anguilla, St Barts, Nevis, Falmouth Bay on Antigua, Barbuda and the chic Îles des Saintes in Guadeloupe — in other words some of the most seductive islands in the region. On board you can expect the fine dining and service that comes from the ship’s partnership with Relais & Châteaux. With just 16 passengers and seven crew on board, this is small-ship luxury at its best — and you don’t have to help to sail the boat unless you want to do so. When you’re at anchor, jump straight into the warm Adriatic. Evenings are spent either in lively towns or anchored in remote bays. Details Seven nights’ full board from £3,025pp, departing on August 10 (venturesailholidays.com). Fly to Split

3. Butlers in the Bahamas

The Bahamas

This 12-night cruise zigzags from New York to Bermuda for an overnight stay, through the Bahamian islands of San Salvador, Exuma and Honeymoon Harbour on tiny Gun Cay, then on to Miami before ending back in Nassau. Expect luxury all the way, with a butler service, an open bar and helicopter trips, plus a submarine and water toys to play on when the ship’s marina platform is down, which is often. Scenic Eclipse carries just 228 passengers, with the vibe of a swish private yacht in its glossy lounges and smart, high-ceilinged cabins. • Ten river cruises for adventurous travellers

6. Amazon adventure

A jaguar in the Amazon rainforest

Trace the northeast coastline of South America on a 19-night expedition on Swan Hellenic’s smart SH Vega, which carries 158 passengers. You’ll start in Barbados and head to Trinidad, but this is no ordinary Caribbean cruise — the next stop is Georgetown in Guyana, then it’s the volcanic Salvation Islands, a former penal colony off the coast of French Guiana now returned to nature. From the Brazilian town of Iquiqui you’ll head into the Amazon rainforest in search of jaguars and pink river dolphins. While in Brazil there’s also a chance to see the rippling white sand dunes ofLençois Maranhenses National Park and the Unesco world heritage town of Olinda before arriving in colourful Bahia. Details Nineteen nights’ all-inclusive from £6,980pp including wi-fi, taxes, excursions and a night in Barbados, departing on October 12, 2025 (swanhellenic.com). Fly to Barbados

7. Maritime history on east-coast US

Sag Harbor

Sail from Boston to New York City on American Cruise Lines’ 90-passenger American Independence, built for the shallow inlets and rivers of the US east coast. You’ll learn about the history of Boston and call at arty, boho coastal towns packed with maritime history. Plymouth was the first pilgrim settlement, while yachtie Newport is known for its opulent seaside estates and lobster. Old Saybrook, settled in 1635, is one of oldest towns in Connecticut, while Sag Harbor is famed for its art galleries and endless beaches. Details Seven nights’ all-inclusive from £5,999pp, including flights, excursions and a night in a hotel pre-cruise, departing on September 29 (fredholidays.co.uk)

8. Tall ship Atlantic crossing

Star Flyer

Crossing the Atlantic under sail is special; you’ll have days to commune with the ocean, leaving the stresses of everyday life behind. Join the 170-passenger tall ship Star Flyer in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria — the city from which Columbus set sail in 1492. There’s a stop at the Canary island of La Gomera, then 13 days at sea as you head west to the Tropics, making landfall at St Maarten. On board you can help the crew with the sails, splash around in the pool, have a Thai massage and — on this sailing, which has a yoga theme — practise your sun salutations. Details Fifteen nights’ full board from £2,015pp, departing on November 15 (starclippers.co.uk). Fly to Gran Canaria and back from St Maarten

9. Tempting Tahiti

Moorea

Discover Tahiti in all its high-definition beauty on the small ship Star Breeze, which carries 312 and is based in Papeete. You’ll visit dreamy islands including Bora Bora, Huahine, Moorea and Raiatea on a seven-night meander through French Polynesia, with swimming in turquoise lagoons, rainforest hikes and visits to vanilla plantations and ancient sacred sites on the agenda. One night there’s a special dinner on a private island, followed by a fire-dancing display under the stars. Details Seven nights’ all-inclusive from £6,200pp, including flights and a night in a hotel pre-cruise, departing on October 17 (windstarcruises.com; book by June 30)

10. Wellness in the Cyclades

Milos

Potter round the lesser-visited Greek islands of the Cyclades on the 50-passenger Elysium, a tiny ship that can anchor in smaller harbours, away from the mainstream cruise ships. There’s an emphasis on healthy Greek food for meals onboard, and you can choose the most inviting taverna in town for either lunch or dinner each day. A wellness coach travels on every cruise to help balance mind and body, with yoga, meditation and hiking on offer. On a seven-night Divine Cyclades cruise you’ll sail from Athens and visit islands including Delos, Naxos, Milos, Serifos and Kythnos, as well as big-hitters such as Santorini and Ios. The 8 best Hawaii cruises in 2024 and 2025

C ruising the Hawaiian Islands offers U.S. travelers an immersive South Pacific escape with all the comforts of home. In fact, the Aloha State is in many ways an ideal cruise destination. It has year-round sunny weather, four main islands featuring varied topographies — including sandy beaches, cascading waterfalls, volcanic mountains and vibrant green valleys — and a wide array of land- and water-based activities.

The main caveat? Hawaii cruise options are somewhat limited — just a fraction of what's available in the Caribbean — and many itineraries involve multiday crossings from the West Coast. Only one cruise line offers Hawaii itineraries throughout the year; most others visit during specific months or when repositioning ships in spring and fall.

For travelers who want more aloha time than the typical eight-hour port call allows, Norwegian Cruise Line has a solution. Its 2,186-passenger Pride of America lets vacationers sample four Hawaiian islands over seven days, with overnights in Maui and Kauai, plus port calls on both Hilo and Kona on the island of Hawaii. In total, this itinerary offers nearly 100 hours of shore time.

Pride of America sails round-trip from Honolulu every Saturday year-round. As a U.S.-flagged ship, it's the only large vessel permitted to sail this way. Not only do you skip the long Pacific crossing that most cruise ships do to reach Hawaii, but passports are not required for U.S. citizens, and you can tack on pre- or post-cruise stays on Oahu.

The overnights on Maui and Kauai also mean it's possible to try several of Hawaii's signature experiences that most port calls don't allow. Passengers can catch dusk or dawn from atop Maui's massive 10,023-foot dormant volcano with sunrise and sunset excursions to the Haleakala Crater. And with the ship in port all night on Kauai, guests who want to enjoy traditional Hawaiian cuisine, music and hula performances can book the Luau Kalamaku for a fun evening out.

Pride of America, which has been cruising Hawaii since 2005, doesn't have the onboard thrills (race track, virtual-reality gaming, waterslides) of Norwegian's newer ships , but that's okay because the islands, not the ship, are your main destination. Its American-themed decor celebrates U.S. cities in a vibrant, and at times, kitschy way, but a 2021 refurbishment left its cabins and public spaces feeling refreshed.

Many of Norwegian's specialty dining venues (which incur a surcharge) are on board, including Cagney's Steakhouse, Le Bistro (here, it's Jefferson's Bistro), Moderno Churrascaria and Teppanyaki.

Who should go: Anyone seeking a convenient way to island-hop — and see a lot of Hawaii — by making the most of the generous shore time with a combination of independent exploration and shore excursions. Most sailings attract couples ages 50 and older, although summer and holiday sailings have plenty of families on board.

UnCruise Adventures' 7-night Hawaiian Seascapes

Cruisers seeking a less traditional, more carefree Hawaii experience can have it from November to April aboard UnCruise Adventures ' 36-passenger Safari Explorer. The seven-night Hawaiian Seascapes itinerary, which begins either on Molokai or the island of Hawaii, is an unconventional one designed for those who enjoy going off the beaten path in an intimate and more authentic setting. U.S. passports aren't required to sail.

UnCruise visits four islands — Maui and Lanai plus Molokai and Hawaii — and focuses on not only their striking landscapes and underwater beauty but also the cultural traditions, cuisine and music of the Hawaiian people. On Molokai, where there's not a single traffic light and the lifestyle is slow-paced, passengers get a chance to "talk story" with locals and enjoy a pa'ina (feast) and evening jam session. Lanai activities range from snorkel, paddleboard and kayak excursions to off-road adventures exploring the privately owned island's dramatic sea cliffs, red rock formations and vast fields once filled with Dole pineapples.

Most UnCruise sailings are during Maui's humpback whale season, so sightings while cruising off the coast of Maui are possible. You might also catch glimpses of dolphins and sea turtles. A "Captain's Choice" day is a wild card determined by the weather, marine life in the area and other factors, while the final two days are spent exploring the Big Island of Hawaii — including a hike up Hualalai volcano and a skiff ride along the rugged coast.

Constructed in 1998, Safari Explorer was designed with adventure itineraries in mind (in summer the U.S.-flagged ship repositions to Alaska). Its size allows it to navigate areas larger ships can't reach, which in Hawaii means bays and coves ideal for snorkeling or watersports.

With such a small number of passengers aboard, guests get to know each other — and Safari Explorer's friendly and knowledgeable crew — quite well. Passengers come together over meals featuring locally sourced ingredients, and as all UnCruise fares include unlimited wines, spirits and microbrews, shipmates can raise a glass without worrying who's buying a round. It all lends itself to an exclusive yet utterly relaxed week of cruising.

Who should go: The ship's laid-back onboard vibe paired with its land- and water-based activities make the Hawaiian Seascapes itinerary ideal for active travelers seeking a nature-focused itinerary — although cruise fares (which start around $5,900 per person) are among the priciest for a Hawaii cruise.

Holland America's 17-night Circle Hawaii

Travelers who have more than two weeks to spare and who prefer to arrive in Hawaii via ship rather than an airplane can do so on Holland America 's 17-night Circle Hawaii itinerary. They'd better also love sea days because crossing the Pacific from San Diego or Vancouver to Honolulu and back requires 10 days.

That means passengers enjoy five or six days in Hawaii on Kauai, Oahu, Maui and the island of Hawaii. Some itineraries stay in select ports overnight. Cruises departing from San Diego also call on Ensenada, Mexico. With either departure port, passports will be required.

The itinerary is offered in 2024 and 2025 on the 2,650-passenger Koningsdam and 1,432-passenger Zaandam.

Travelers with more time on their hands can also visit Hawaii as part of longer Pacific island cruises with Holland America. Koningsdam will sail a 35-night Hawaii, Tahiti & Marquesas itinerary in 2025 that combines visits to four Hawaiian islands with calls on five islands in French Polynesia and Fanning Island, Kiribati (and 20 sea days).

Related: Holland America unveils epic cruise to Hawaii and Alaska for 2025

Zaandam will also sail 51- to 56-night Tales of the South Pacific itineraries that visit multiple islands in Hawaii and French Polynesia along with ports in the Cook Islands, American Samoa and Fiji.

Holland America is popular with cruisers ages 60 and older, many of them retired, who have time to enjoy longer itineraries on ships that offer good value with a focus on culinary and musical enjoyment. Two of Koningsdam's most popular venues are its live entertainment area with three venues — B.B. King's Blues Club (for Memphis-style rhythm and blues), Billboard Onboard (for chart-topping hits played by a live pianist) and Rolling Stone Rock Room (for a live band playing classic rock), and World Stage, a theater with a 270-degree screen used for both special BBC Earth in Concert and theatrical productions.

Onboard specialty dining options (at an added cost) include Pinnacle Grill for steaks and seafood, Tamarind for Pan-Asian cuisine and Rudi's Sel de Mer for French Brasserie specialties and seafood.

Who should go: Mature travelers who prefer not to fly and who enjoy a more traditional cruise experience. They should also love sea days as much (or even more so) than port exploration.

Princess Cruises' 15- or 16-night Hawaiian Islands

Princess Cruises is also a good option for longer sailings. The cruise line offers numerous round-trip itineraries to Hawaii from Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego in the fall and winter.

The majority of sailings are aboard the 3,080-passenger Crown Princess and Ruby Princess from San Francisco, and the 2,600-passenger Grand Princess and 3,080-passenger Emerald Princess from Los Angeles.

Ships are in port for nine to 11 hours in Hawaii (Hilo), Kauai and Maui and for 16 hours in Oahu. Itineraries include a stop in Ensenada, Mexico (so passports are required), plus nine or 10 sea days.

The ships feature many of Princess' popular dining venues, including Alfredo's Pizzeria (a sit-down venue serving personal-size pizzas), Crown Grill for steaks and Sabatini's Italian Trattoria. There's plenty of outdoor space for soaking up the sun — including an adults-only sun deck — and a dazzling Piazza for enjoying cocktails, gelato and pop-up street performers.

Fans of Princess' Movies Under the Stars poolside screenings (with free popcorn) and Discovery at SEA enrichment programming will have ample time to enjoy these perks on a Hawaii sailing.

Who should go: These sailings will appeal to couples or groups of friends who prefer to have a wide choice of sailing dates, can take the time to enjoy a leisurely Pacific crossing and appreciate Princess' focus on quality cuisine and a sun deck designed for relaxation rather than thrills.

Celebrity's 9- to 12-night Hawaii Cruise

Travelers seeking modern interior decor on a ship designed with couples in mind can visit Hawaii aboard Celebrity Cruises ' 2,852-passenger Celebrity Solstice or 2,918-passenger Celebrity Edge on itineraries ranging from nine to 13 nights — but only if the timing is right. That's because the line offers only two sailings per ship each year (in spring and fall) as the ships reposition between Alaska and destinations in the Pacific. The itineraries are one-way (Vancouver to Honolulu or vice versa) with passports required.

These cruises call on three ports on two islands: Honolulu (Oahu) and Hilo and Kona (Hawaii), with one or two overnights in port and 10 hours ashore on one-day visits. All include five days in a row at sea. Since the itineraries either begin or end in Honolulu, there's also a chance for some pre- or post-cruise exploration.

Sea days offer opportunities to enjoy the chic, grown-up ambience and amenities aboard these ships. Each vessel offers multiple complimentary and extra-fee specialty restaurants. Celebrity Solstice features Tuscan Grille for Italian specialties and steak and Murano for modern French cuisine, while Celebrity Edge offers the whimsical Le Petit Chef and the international Eden Restaurant.

Celebrity's signature Martini Bar and many other onboard watering holes keep the grown-up vibe going day and night. Choose cruise fares that include alcohol and Wi-Fi, or pay a lower rate and pay for your drinks as you go.

Who should go: The slightly shorter one-way sailings and the ships' contemporary ambience make these itineraries ideal for couples and groups of friends seeking a relaxing escape — especially Gen Xers in their 40s and 50s, who are Celebrity's target market.

Carnival's 14- or 15-night Hawaii from Los Angeles

If fun is your cruise mantra, the "Fun Ship" brand Carnival Cruise Line offers a handful of round-trip sailings to Hawaii from Los Angeles (Long Beach) aboard the 2,984-passenger Carnival Radiance. Like other roundtrips from the West Coast, these itineraries spend just five days in Hawaii, offering eight to 14 hours of shore time in ports on four islands: Maui, Kauai, Oahu and Hawaii. Along with enjoying eight sea days, guests will also call on Ensenada, Mexico, so passports are required.

Carnival Radiance first sailed under that name in 2021, but it's not a new ship. Before an epic makeover, it sailed for the cruise line as Carnival Victory. Ship features include many of Carnival's signature complimentary and extra-fee dining venues, including Guy's Burger Joint and Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que Smokehouse, BlueIguana Cantina, Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse and Bonsai Sushi Express.

Additional guest favorite destinations on board include the RedFrog Pub, Alchemy Bar and WaterWorks aquapark. Expect high-voltage theater shows from Playlist Productions at night and poolside interactive contests by day.

Who should go: Socially inclined cruisers who love Carnival's emphasis on onboard fun and can appreciate a colorful ship with a lively ambience and lots of day and evening activities.

Royal Caribbean's 9- to 13-night Hawaii Cruises

A megaship cruise experience to Hawaii is available, too — with pricing that's quite affordable. Royal Caribbean cruises there on two vessels in one of its newer classes of ships: the 4,180-passenger Quantum of the Seas and Ovation of the Seas.

All are one-way cruises just before or after the Alaska cruise season (so late April or early October) between Oahu and Vancouver (or vice versa). The ships call on two Hawaiian islands and spend four or five days in a row at sea. Passports are required since these itineraries begin or end in Vancouver.

Ovation of the Seas and Quantum of the Seas feature a mix of thrills for all ages. These include RipCord by iFly simulated sky diving, FlowRider simulated surfing, bumper car racing in the SeaPlex indoor activity complex and the North Star sightseeing capsule, which ascends 300 feet above the top deck for 360-degree views.

Both ships also offer 14 dining venues, including the innovative Wonderland, Jamie's Italian by Jamie Oliver and kid-favorite Dog House, as well as bar options that include Schooner Bar for by-request piano tunes, Boleros for mojitos and merengue and Bionic Bar for drinks poured by robotic bartenders. Entertainment includes live cover bands in the Music Hall and multimedia music and dance performances in Two70.

Who should go: Cruisers who love a big ship with a wide array of dining choices, all kinds of evening entertainment and plenty of exciting activities to pass the time on sea days. Quantum-class ships are great for families, but the sail dates might not work for those with school-age kids.

Viking's 16-night Hawaiian Islands Sojourn

For a guaranteed adults-only sailing in a relaxed, boutique-style setting, upscale cruise line Viking also offers round-trip Hawaii cruises from Los Angeles in late 2024 and early 2025 on its 930-passenger Viking Neptune.

What sets Viking apart from most of the other lines offering Hawaii cruises is that it includes a free shore excursion in every port. These include a highlights tour of Honolulu and Pearl Harbor on Oahu and a visit to a scenic waterfall and the Kilohana sugar plantation on Kauai. Additional excursions can be booked at an extra charge.

The 16-night Hawaiian Islands Sojourn sailings visit four islands — Hawaii (Hilo), Oahu, Kauai and Maui — and like other round-trip sailings from the West Coast include 10 sea days and a call on Ensenada, Mexico, so passports are required.

Viking Neptune will also do 32-night Grand Hawaii and Polynesia sailings round-trip from Los Angeles in late 2024 and early 2025 that visit four islands in Hawaii and four in French Polynesia.

The ship, which debuted in 2022, features sleek Scandinavian-inspired decor, a soothing spa with a complimentary thermal area, an aft infinity pool and hot tub, a panoramic Explorer's Lounge and five onboard restaurants. Specialty restaurant Manfredi's serves an extensive menu of Italian specialties, while The Chef's Table offers rotating five-course themed menus, including Asian, French and California-inspired.

In addition to the free shore excursions, pricing includes complimentary wine or beer with lunch and dinner, specialty dining at no extra charge, crew gratuities and transfers.

Who should go: Couples who prefer the quieter ambience of a ship that doesn't allow anyone under 18 onboard, doesn't have a casino and offers presentations by regional experts that enhance immersion into local culture. Viking cruisers are generally over age 55.
