Their latest record 'Promises' was recorded partly in their studio in London, partly during a six week session in LA. The band strayed from their usual writing process, opting to record whilst in the studio rather than in a rehearsal space. If afforded them the opportunity to experiment with new sounds and hear a change instantaneously.

“It really allowed us to fine-tune songs in a way that is hard to achieve when you are in a big expensive studio recording them for the first time with the pressure of getting things done,"  they told GoldenPlec.  "For the most part it worked brilliantly but towards the end of the process we realised that in order to finish it, we needed an outside opinion and a deadline. Both came in the form of Billy Bush (who has previously worked with the likes of Garbage, Imagine Dragons and Fink) and a block of time in an LA studio.”

While in studio they worked with a knowledgeable drum tech called Mike who assisted them with their drum selection.

“With him came his massive collection of drums and amongst the 20 or so snare drums happened to be one that suited the song Always . After getting a couple of takes down Mike casually mentioned to Piers that it happened to be the same snare used on November Rain by Guns and Roses. We love that it made our record and it's the kind of music history that seems to be the norm in LA. ”

The Londoners band have spent time in Ireland and fondly shared a memory from their last visit.

“Piers our drummer actually had his stag do there... we had a brilliant time! Perhaps Dubliners get weary of stag parties rolling around drunk but the city is just the perfect place to have a good time. We also loved playing there a few years ago, the crowd  were great!”

The Irish connection goes further than a stag party as they also toured with Kodaline.

“Yeah we have also had Kodaline support us in the past and they are a great band with a very good live show. I was a big fan of Ash growing up and their first album came out at just the right teenage moment for me to connect with it!”

Boxer Rebellion’s music has been featured on major US TV shows. They spoke a little about how beneficial these TV show are as an outlet for musicians in the states.

“Major US TV and film exposure has become our radio in the States… we have reached audiences that might not have come across our music otherwise and added to a really great mix of fans at live shows. It is also fun to have friends and family in the US be surprised by our songs whilst they randomly watch TV! I think our music has always worked with picture and it is very satisfying to see music departments enjoy our music for its cinematic qualities.”

Once this European tour is completed The Boxer Rebellion will play several festivals between block periods of writing for their next release.

“We'll also be planning a couple of surprises for the fans to listen to! Watch this space!”

The Boxer Rebellion play The Limelight 2 in Belfast tonight. Tickets available from usual outlets.

THE BOXER REBELLION return with new single ‘Lightness Out Of Darkness’

The Boxer Rebellion

Meeting fans in intimate circles and grand theatres last month, from London and Leeds to Paris and Amsterdam, The Boxer Rebellion’s connection to their illustrious past felt as visceral as the rush of love that found them in the present. Following those unforgettable nights, when old songs met new and their five-year hiatus came to an official end, the real sense that only good things still lie in wait is expressed in delicately weighted tones on their latest track, “Lightness Out Of Darkness.”

The same band that established towering DIY ideals toured the world independently and impacted a decade of popular culture profoundly through soundtrack contributions and TV appearances, Nathan Nicholson (vocals), Andrew Smith (guitars), Adam Harrison (bass) and Piers Hewitt (drums) achieve the notable feat of updating their sound while remaining 100% the same The Boxer Rebellion that fans have always loved.

Teasing out the latest emotive opus from their upcoming February 2024 EP, produced by the band and mixed by Sam Duckworth (Get Cape, Wear Cape, Fly), “Lightness Out Of Darkness” is a four-and-a-half-minute, meditative flow of powerfully articulate beauty.

Nicholson explains, “Lightness Out Of Darkness is a song about perseverance, knowing that every sunset has a sunrise and obstacles only stay obstacles when you lose faith in yourself.”

Listen to “Lightness Out Of Darkness” – BELOW:

Announcing just eight dates across the UK & Europe for this year while dropping hints of more to follow in 2024, The Boxer Rebellion brought their extended pause in writing, recording and touring together to a close last month and started penning the band’s next chapter. A shoulder-to-shoulder, standing-room-only return to the city that pulled the transatlantic band into each other’s orbit at Lafayette, London, was followed by sold-out major dates in theatre venues overseas, including an unforgettable concluding night at the ornate Paradiso in the Dutch capital.

As their short tour gathered pace, The Boxer Rebellion not only treated fans to their first new music since their 2018 album, Ghost Alive , by releasing the crystalline single, “Powdered Sugar”, they also released classic long-players, Exits, Union, The Cold Still , and Promises on vinyl for the first time. Hugely popular on the merch table before and after each show, the remastered reissues are now widely available, including directly from the band’s official online store.

Also passing the 20th anniversary of their first single release, “Watermelon”, in October, The Boxer Rebellion’s return has offered them and their fans moments of nostalgic reflection while looking forward to completing their EP’s release early next year.

Members of The Boxer Rebellion form new group Big Ideas with filmmaker Ben Lankester

New EP 'The American Dream' comes complete with a short film inspired by the imminent US election

Big Ideas

The Boxer Rebellion ‘s Nathan Nicholson and Adam Harrison have created new group Big Ideas along with filmmaker Ben Lankester – hear their debut single below.

The new EP, titled ‘The American Dream’, will come out via Absentee Recordings, and Lankester has also created a short film based around the imminent US election for the record’s title track.

Speaking of the new project, Nicholson and Harrison said: “Whilst writing, we had the idea for a song that commented on two realities that exist in the world today. ‘The American Dream’ embodies that drive to improve life for the individual – on the surface, easy to understand… like our song.

“But that short sightedness ignores challenges that can only be solved as a collective. The dream you’re sold, isn’t always the reality you end up paying for.”

Lankester added of the short film: “What I relished about the challenge of creating the video for ’The American Dream’ was the dichotomy between the seemingly breezy surface of the song and the very contemporary dystopian themes running almost hidden underneath.

“Could we push this dark narrative concept as far as we could whilst ensuring the film always worked in service to the music? This was the challenge that was a pleasure to tackle head on.”

The Boxer Rebellion’s last album came in the form of 2018’s ‘Ghost Alive’, which discusses mental health in men.

Prior to the album, the band shared single ‘Love Yourself’ , which they told NME was about “loving yourself, accepting your flaws and appreciating your best”.

The Boxer Rebellion is an indie-rock band formed by British and American musicians Nathan Nicholson, Andrew Smith, Adam Harrison and Piers Hewitt. Formed in London in 2001, the band has released four studio albums and two EPs.

Founded by Americans and Brits, The Boxer Rebellion was formed 2001 when American singer Nathan Nicholson met former band member Todd Howe. The pair brought on the other members of the band and they soon began producing music together after choosing the name The Boxer Rebellion.

Formed in London the group found their first supporters among British fans after opening for acts such as A Perfect Circle and Lenny Kravitz at various London venues. The opportunity to play at Glastonbury brought the band major attention and they were soon signed to Poptones, with whom they released their eponymous EP.

“The Boxer Rebellion EP” was so successful that the band was invited to tour with The Killers, but a serious bout of illness for Nathan Nicholson meant that the band was unable to see this opportunity through.

In 2005 the band was finally able to release their debut album, “Exits”. The album contained various tracks from the band’s first EPs and upon release it received extensive positive feedback from critics. Soon after this debut release, The Boxer Rebellion’s record label, Poptones, dissolved and the band found itself without a label. Unperturbed the group has continued to tour and release material unsigned.

In 2009 the band released “Union” as a digital-only release and it got to number four on the UK iTunes album chart. Subsequent albums “The Cold Still” and “Promises” also did well with critics and fans alike.

The Boxer Rebellion has toured extensively throughout Europe and North America due to their varied fan base. This fan base has been bolstered by the use of the band’s music on TV shows such as “One Tree Hill”, “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Human Target”. Compared to bands such as Oasis and Sigur Ros, the band has attracted extensive critical success and acclaim throughout their career.

Live-Bewertungen

Led by Nathan Nicholson on vocals/guitar, The Boxer Rebellion has released a total of four albums, two EPs, and has been featured on a plethora of television shows. Since 2011, the independent alt-rockers have slid below the radar of mainstream, both good and bad. They are a great band and more people should know about them but the benefit is smaller, more intimate live sets. You also get much more passion behind their music, because you know that they are playing the show because the absolutely love performing. They played at the Constellation Room at the Observatory in Santa Ana California, which meant there were maybe about 100 people in the room. Since the band isn’t “huge” most of the people present were actual fans that sought out their live show. This meant that when the band took the stage after a mediocre opening band, the crowd really responded breaking out into screams and shouts. They opened with “Semi Automatic,” and played an hour-long set. Nathans vocals are slightly haunting and generally reminiscent of Jim Morrison from The Doors. In between songs, the band took time to talk to the audience and have a bit of banter between each other. Their dynamic is really fun to witness as well, and it really comes across that they have been friends for a very long time, and allow you to be a part of it by including you. It’s almost like an intimate hangout session.

I saw The Boxer Rebellion at The Independent in San Francisco October 19, 2016. The opening artist was solo acoustic guitar and vocals. He was on his first tour, and his first performance. He clearly had talent, but needs some polish. The second bad, Hey Anna, was a fun, lively quintet, fronted by three women (two are sisters), and just starting their third US tour.

The Boxer Rebellion were magnificent. They made me feel like I was back in my teens, reveling in four guys creating glorious noise that makes the soul take off. They performed a very healthy mix of old, older, and brand new songs, and really worked hard to entertain the audience. One highlight was when singer Nathan Nicholson and guitarist Andrew Smith jumped off stage with just an acoustic guitar, and sang "Always" unplugged in the middle of the audience. Nicholson again waded into the audience with mic on "No Harm" towards the end of the concert. Smith, Adam Harrison on bass, and Piers Hewitt on drums all played their hearts out. They played almost two hours, the set never flagged, the sound was clean, and the size of the venue made it an intimate concert.

Really great show by a really great band. Go see them if you get the chance.

Indie rock bands come and go, but the Boxer Rebellion is one of those bands who’ll be around for the long run, at least in the film world. If you happened to catch the 2010 film starring Drew Barrymore and Justin Long, ‘Going the Distance,’ you’ll notice that Nathan Nicholson, Adam Harrison and Piers Hewitt essentially playing themselves and rocking the stage.

While it was cool to see this band, who was unsigned at the time, in a film with Barrymore and Long, it was even better watching them headline their own show at the same place the made the film at -- the Bowery Ballroom in Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Playing tracks from ‘Union,’ the London band felt at home playing in front of the New York City crowd, and the night’s attendees packed themselves into the large venue and were welcoming them with open arms.

Playing ‘Evacuate,’ ‘Flashing Lights’ and ‘Misplaced,’ they may be a rock band, but there is a bit of tenderness in Nicholson’s voice, which makes you want to keep listening to what they have say in their songs. Since then the band has released, ‘The Cold Still’ and ‘Promises,’ and have continued to bring their sounds to stages around Europe.

When a band sounds even better live than you could have hoped, you've won. The venue is intimate and The Boxer Rebellion played to that. During a killer 16 song set, they connected with us, and even joined us in the audience. With a mix of older and brand new songs, they gave me one of the best concert experiences ever. I drove from Philadelphia to see them and would happily do it again.

Despite Nathan feeling sick they put on a terrific show.

Without exception they are all amazing and their music sublime. Live takes the listening experience to another level as a tight unit displaying individual brilliance moving from ballad to full on rock; breathtaking!

6th album delivers again and thank you TBR for countless hours of listening pleasure!

Excellent gig. I'd only ever seen them once before at an acoustic charity event for Grenfell Towers, so great to see a 'proper' gig. Can't fault it. Victories at Sea supporting were great. Islington Assembly Halls is a decent venue too. Good night out.

Best set list in years. Outstanding performance. Nathan had a cold and still killed it. Unbelievable how hard those guys work. What a great venue. We are seeing these guys 5 times this year, worth it every time!!

Absolutely fantastic concert.

Without the bassist (had to go to hospital with wife), the band still chose to improvise an accustic version and spoiled us with a honest and down to earth performance.

The Boxer Rebellion's ‘A Man As Alive As The City’ is OUT NOW

the boxer rebellion tour 2022

A pulsing, crystalline mantra to electric restlessness from The Boxer Rebellion…

A MAN AS ALIVE AS THE CITY

Heading into a 2024 loaded with promise following last year’s surprise return, the original, post-rock DIY heroes go deep once more

Handling human nature through visceral song, The Boxer Rebellion complete their new Open Arms EP next month

The Boxer Rebellion –  A Man As Alive As The City OUT NOW on Absentee Recordings From the  Open Arms  EP- Wed 14 February 2024 – Vinyl/Digital Release information:  theboxerrebellion.com

A coiled spring slowly unfurled in simple, single-note piano lines, frenetic guitar loops and pulsing beats, The Boxer Rebellion’s latest single, A Man As Alive As The City is a widescreen, waterfalling, picture of rattling restlessness. Tapping into the human condition note-by-note, line-by-line and song-by-song, the resurgent four-piece present another deeply emotive cut as their new, Open Arms EP looms into view.

Accompanying a run of celebratory, sold-out UK and Europe dates through October, the band released the shimmering, epic Powdered Sugar to confirm that not only had the band returned, but a clear line from their past had been drawn to the present in a burst of urgent, updated creativity. Following November’s release of Lightness Out Of Darkness, another stepping stone towards the release of the band’s new EP, released on Wed 14 February 2024, A Man As Alive As The City is a song as much for the listener as it is catharsis for the writer.

Singer and songwriter, Nathan Nicholson explains “‘A Man As Alive As The City’ is a feeling more than anything. It’s about restlessness and change. I find it hard a lot of times to unwind, like I have electricity in my veins, constantly overthinking and moving like a city that never sleeps.”

The union of the four Boxer Rebellion band members, Nicholson (vocals, guitar, keyboards),  Adam Harrison  (bass guitar),  Piers Hewitt  (drums) and  Andrew Smith  (lead guitar), gave their followers, all the way through the noughties and 2010’s, belief in the DIY dream. Releasing no fewer than six albums, five on their own label after turning their back on a conventional music industry in turmoil, and including classic singles including  Flashing Red Light Means Go, Evacuate, Keep Moving, Diamonds  and  Both Sides Are Even,  the climb towards matching or bettering such a rate of successful, searching, life-affirming music could have appeared steep.

On revealing their first new recordings last autumn, listeners were left under no illusion that the band had met the challenge to return and both meet and exceed those expectations. Similarly, their fierce sense of independence was found intact, reactivating their own Absentee Recordings  label to release both their new music and press a run of their most-loved albums on vinyl for the first time.  Exits, Union, The Cold Still,  and  Promises  are now widely available at record stores, as well as directly from the  band’s official online store .

The Boxer Rebellion are to update their story later in 2024 following the release of February’s EP, with promise of more music and further live appearances.

The Buzziest Films and Packages for Sale at Cannes 2024: ‘The Apprentice,’ Pamela Anderson’s ‘Last Showgirl’ and ‘Emilia Perez’ Starring Selena Gomez

Cannes hot list

Are we headed for a bon marché?

A new class of finished films and packages (unmade movies with big stars and a director attached) will travel to Cannes this week in search of cash and homes with the studios, streamers and global indie players.

The 2024 Cannes market comes equipped with some interesting contradictions. Stateside, the content buying machine is fraught. Major media stock prices are getting hammered day by day, and a new age of austerity has gripped the once free-spending tech giants. At the same time, distributors paralyzed by the 2023 Hollywood labor strikes need content to fill their slates for the end the year and the top of 2025.

Popular on Variety

These packages have bankable stars and heatseeking up-and-comers, including Kristen Stewart, Hugh Jackman, Colin Farrell and Sydney Sweeney. Other agents were equally eager to downplay a shortage of finished movies, but take a look at our most notable list below and you’ll see more than half (including honorable mentions) are unmade or entering pre-production. Any feature film getting made right now, however, should probably inspire relief in the industry.

Another important factor that bolsters Cannes sales is the annual awards race. Funny how quickly money doesn’t become an issue when Oscars could be on the table, and this year’s official selection could have a few contenders (Andrea Arnold, Paul Schrader, Sebastian Stan and Jeremy Strong to name a few).

Take a tour through the buzziest titles for sale in and around this year’s Marche du Film:

Official Selection

“Bird” Cast : Barry Keoghan, Franz Rogowski, Nykiya Adams Director : Andrea Arnold Agency : CAA, Cornerstone Why Buyers Care : Arnold’s return to the Croisette is easily one of the hottest tickets of the festival. To say the director is native to Cannes would be putting it mildly. Notable works of hers to have premiered here include “Cow,” “American Honey,” and “Fish Tank.” Add to that the star power of Keoghan and “Passages” breakout Rogowski, plus the familiar Arnold terrain of teenage rebellion and surviving broken families.

“The Apprentice” Cast : Sebastian Stan, Jeremy Strong, Maria Bakalova Director : Ali Abbasi Agency : CAA, WME Why Buyers Care : Marvel hero Stan starring as a young Trump, navigating a Faustian deal with the treacherous lawyer Roy Cohn (Strong) is plenty incentive. Bakalova as Ivana? Take our money. And let’s not discount the admired director Abbasi, whose “Holy Spider” played Cannes to great notices in 2022 and landed him a gig directing on the hit first season of HBO’s “The Last of Us.”

“Oh, Canada” Cast : Richard Gere, Uma Thurman, Jacob Elordi Director : Paul Schrader Agency : WME, Arclight Why Buyers Care : 77-year-old Facebook superstar and lightning rod Schrader returns with a film that feels close to home. Gere stars as an octogenarian filmmaker who, stricken with cancer, agrees to narrate the story of his own life. But can the caddish auteur be trusted to tell the truth about what really went down? Bonus interest here for Thurman back in a dramatic role and, of course, “Euphoria” heartthrob Elordi.

“Emilia Perez” Cast : Selena Gomez , Karla Sofia Gascón, Zoe Saldana, Edgar Ramirez Director : Jacques Audiard Agency : CAA Why Buyers Care : Audiard is a household name in France and won the Palme d’Or for his 2015 feature “Dheepan.” Mind you, this was after setting the film world on fire with his universally praised 2006 drama “A Prophet.” Here he takes the star power of Gomez, Saldana and Ramirez for a wild genre ride – musical crime comedy – about an unsatsfied young lawyer who falls in with a cartel leader longing for a different life.

“The Surfer” Cast : Nicolas Cage, Julian McMahon Director : Lorcan Finnegan Agency : WME, north.five.six Why Buyers Care : In a wildly unpredictable finished film market, genre films may be the only safe bet. Cage has also become a virtuoso for films at this budget level (“Pig,” Mandy”), and this latest thriller sees him as a dad looking for revenge against a local pack of thugs who lay claim to the secluded beach where he played as a child.

“The Last Showgirl” Cast : Pamela Anderson, Jamie Lee Curtis, Kiernan Shipka, Billie Lourd, Dave Bautista, Brenda Song Director : Gia Coppola Agency : CAA, Goodfellas, Utopia Why Buyers Care : Anderson is in renaissance mode after her 2023 Netflix documentary recontextualized her bombshell legacy and exploitation at the hands of men and Hollywood. CAA will be on the ground showing footage from this Coppola project, which is already earmarked as a breakout performance for Pam. She plays the titular showgirl at a career crossroads when her 30-year Las Vegas review closes abruptly.

“Belly of the Beast” Cast : Colin Farrell, Ben Stiller Director : Andrew Haigh Agency : CAA, Village Roadshow, UTA, mk2 Why Buyers Care : After Haigh’s acclaimed “All of Us Strangers,” which frankly not enough people saw, he’s back with an unlikely star match in Stiller and Farrell. The film follows the true story of the friendship between notorious literary titan Norman Mailer (Stiller) and his protégé, Jack Henry Abbott (Farrell) – a pairing which ends in tragedy.

Untitled Christy Martin Biopic Cast : Sydney Sweeney Director : David Michôd Agency : UTA, AC Independent, Black Bear Why Buyers Care : As if we had to say anything more than “Sydney Sweeney.” The “Euphoria” breakout has proven to have box office clout (“Anyone but You”) and dramatic chops (the Berlin player “Reality”). Here she steps up to play Martin, a trailblazing female boxer of the ‘90s who also battled toxic relationships and a near-fatal domestic attack.

“Out Late” Cast : Ron Perlman, Rupert Everett Director : Thomas Michael Agency : WTFilms Why Buyers Care : Though a major domestic agency has not come on board to rep sales on this rom-com, we’re calling it as a hidden gem of the market. Salty dog Perlman (“Don’t Look Up,” “Hellboy”) plays a blue-collar Italian widower confronting a lifelong secret. Everett, as an out gay dancer who befriends Perlman, inspires courage as the latter’s family tries to force him back into the closet.

“Power Ballad” Cast : Paul Rudd, Nick Jonas Director : John Carney Agency : 30WEST, WME, UTA Why Buyers Care : Carney is a twee movie musical machine, having pumped out hits like Oscar winner “Once,” “Sing Street,” “Begin Again’ and the recent “Flora and Son.” Here. he tells of a middle-aged wedding band singer (Rudd), whose life take a turn when he’s shafted for a writing credit on a song he made with a former boy bander (Jonas). Rudd’s character sets out to reclaim his work and a lost career, with his family in the balance.

The Boxer Rebellion

Open Arms EP

Couldn't load pickup availability

A pulsing, crystalline mantra to electric restlessness from The Boxer Rebellion…

Heading into a 2024 loaded with promise following last year’s surprise return, the original, post-rock DIY heroes The Boxer Rebellion go deep once more and release their new Open Arms EP, available on limited 500 pressing on Cream Coloured Vinyl.

Accompanying a run of celebratory, sold-out UK and Europe dates through October 2023, the band released the shimmering, epic Powdered Sugar to confirm that not only had the band returned, but a clear line from their past had been drawn to the present in a burst of urgent, updated creativity. Following November’s release of Lightness Out Of Darkness, another stepping stone towards the release of the band’s new EP. New single A Man As Alive As The City is a song as much for the listener as it is catharsis for the writer, and the band at their stunning best.

The Boxer Rebellion are to update their story later in 2024, following the release of February’s EP, with promise of more music and further live appearances.
