Excellent. All the ticket prices have gone up so much. With only economy as the option, I thought I better pay for a good airline and I am glad I took ANA. The only thing is the long layover at Hanaeda enroute to Singapore. Any chance to bring back the service to land at Narita instead for the transit and a shorter layover will be fantastic. I am a fan of ANA.

Good. Got me there and back safely and mostly on time. 30 min delay for maintenance once but that means more time for nap. Crew was super nice.

Incredible. Amazing legroom. Over head fans for each person. Tv screens were great. Headphones were adequate. Seats were comfortable and spacious. Loved it.

The space for the seats i like it. Its not too close like other air line. The food is ok and also the staff. I'm waiting for my flight rewards point because until now i didn't recieved it.

The staff, ground and air, at ANA was very helpful and friendly during check in, boarding and during the flight. This is the reason why I always fly ANA whenever I go to Manila. The food was not the best but the flight crew more than makes up for the shortfall.

First I will say this was really NOT an ANA flight. ANA used a UNITED jet to perform this flight. I specifically booked with ANA because I did NOT WANT TO FLY UNITED FOR INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS. So to spend $1800.00 and then discover after booking that it was going to be handled by United was very disappointing. I will be more careful next time when I book. The interior was very cramped in economy class; the dinner meal was terrible and also had extremely small portions for an international flight - the bread roll was ice cold and stale - that salad was very wilted; I’ve never had a “snack” that was so salty that it was difficult to eat; the breakfast “waffle” was practically unrecognizable. Really horrible meals for a very expensive international flight. Bathroom floor was also pretty dirty. I’m hoping my return flight is a real ANA airplane that is cleaned and serviced by ANA personnel with ANA meals. I will never book with ANA again if they continue to use UNITED airline jets. Yuck!!!🤢

Ticket was purchased as a United Airlines flight (operated by All Nippon) like what does that even mean? Makes for a VERY confusing flight experience. For instance, what do I look for a United drop off signage and ticket counter or ANA? No explanation anywhere to be found. I also felt a little bit scammed by the obsurdely restrictive seat selection provided. Only middle seats available!! Are you kidding me!! On 6hr + 10hr flights you're forcing me into the middle seat without telling me before I purchased the ticket?? This should be illegal. And to top it off, on the Tokyo LA leg there were quite a few empty seats including window seats! I must also say, the food was a dissappointing as well for my taste, fish with rice ( mostly plain white rice) or a vegetable medly for the breakfast meal? Should be at least 4 choices and at least 1 with eggs. Outside of these issues flight was otherwise ok.

Ground and flight crew were all courteous, extremely helpful and professional. Overall, process is really organized, from boarding to disembarkation.

This is a very long flight and the first time I have flown on a Japanese airline. I was very impressed with the staff. They worked hard and offered food and drink regularly. Plane was very well cared for. The let room was good . Food was ok but better than other airlines.

It was very nice. I was a bit disappointed by the few meal services. There were probably more drink services that I missed while sleeping, but I would have liked the crew to bring more than one drink service before landing and to bring more than one drink service and coffee service after take off

Seems like crew assumed you're korean. Not impressed by crew

Staff was excellent. Food could use more variety. -More vegetable options. Menu didn't have juice or soda listed. -The croissants were outstanding!

Asian Vegitarian food was test less No Salt or pepper served Need to improve with Chef who can caters for Peaple from India I am sure Chef knows different varieties of food Indian People like

Flight attendants rude, they disappear for almost 3 hours not doing rounds to see what people needed. The laboratories were full of empty water cups, because they never come back to collect them.

The flight attendant, where kind of rude, there where hiding for almost 3 hours, without doing rounds to see if people needed water or pickup the water cups, the toilets were full of water cups, because they never come back to pick them up.

Flew on an Airbus 350-900. Excellent aircraft properly cleaned and serviced. Flight crew was excellent plane departed and arrived on time. The A350 has excellent air circulation far better than the 777. I would recommend Asiana to anyone looking to fly in a clean comfortable environment. This is my second round trip flight from New York to Bangkok via Asiana and I will book Asiana again!

Amazing service and fabulous syaff. Loved the jumbo jet too, comfortable.

The entertainment screens are dated and needs to be changed to new screens. Then when we got home, I found out 2 of our luggage’s were damaged (huge) and some items stolen.

I could not choose my seat prior to check in

I had the most wonderful experience from CEB bag drop through deplaning. The staff, the aircraft, food, and cabin crew were all amazing. I want to give a kudos to Marky from Mactan Cebu's Asiana airport staff for his exceptional customer service and assistance.

Very pleasant, look forward to flying with JAL again if the price is right.

I was feeling very comfortable throughout the flight. I got more leg room than I expected from a Y class seat. But the food was a little disappointing.

The food was not that good. I liked the miso, green tea, and ice cream. I wasn’t able to put my carry on bag under the seat in front of me. The flight was smooth. Please expand your choices of movies especially the new ones. I can’t choose any of those films. They’re old.

I like the braised beef., miso soup,, and green tea. Very little choices of hollywood movies. The PA announcement in English was not very clear and very soft. I could hardly hear.

More updated movies & Chinese movies. The food sometimes overcooked. Prefer to have more neat snacks in between than just choose from the menu. Please change the menu every now and then. This is my second time flying within one year and the menu didn’t change at all!

Food is lagging. Very poor choice. Like vending machine fast food.

Please change the menu more often. The beef is not tender, more choice in ice cream flavor. Dessert is not good too.

The Experience was fantastic, it's a quick flight so no entertainment or food. Just a refreshment

Again I paid for an upgrade on my credit card didn’t get it need a refund. . American I not good at gettin in contact for refunds.

l enjoyed the variety of good and drink choices. The flight attendants were very quick and efficient to our needs.

Flight was delayed for 2 hours for no reason, then we spent almost an hour after boarding because of the weather conditions. If we left on time we could avoid that 😾

Left late. Crowded like cattle. Standing and waiting. Food on board getting worse.

Terrible- the flight time was delayed and then I was denied boarding because I arrived at the new time of departure

Flight delayed an hour due to plane maintenance issues after getting in line to board. Issue was plane galley ovens which eliminated hot meals for overseas flight. Cold selections were limited due to availability. Drink and meal service (already an hour delayed) was very slow. Upon arrival in Nashville, had to sit at gate for about 15 minutes before disembarking with no explanation. Local police then boarded plane as we were disembarking so maybe that was the issue.

Boarding good. Seats uncomfortable when lie flat. Food was awful. Tasted stale and chicken was dry. No live tv or flight map. Had to pay for internet.

Poor technical details on this plane. 1) There was no WiFi on an 8 hour long-haul flight. So no work could be done. That's below the standard expected for airlines these days. 2) The power outlet at my seat was busted and not working. 3) The headphone jack was loose and I had to keep adjusting my headphones to get good reception, or when it slipped out. - The flight was delayed to due mechanics. Sometimes this can't be avoided, I understand, and it's a big inconvenience to arrive that much later when traveling across time zones (then arriving at 4am from the prior time zone). - Also unique to this flight, the northern lights were visible on the right side of the aircraft, but I only found out after we landed (b/c again no wifi). I understand there are considerations about people being out of their seats to look, but I feel extremely disappointed and resentful that I wasn't told so that I could have a chance to look at this probably once-in-a-lifetime cosmic event from a view in the sky. - Flight crew was otherwise friendly and helpful.

Our flight was delayed by over 6 hours. We then had to deplane, stay overnight in a hotel then fly out the next day, 23 hours late.

I would have preferred something lighter for the second meal. Maybe a small sandwich .

They cancelled our flight the morning of departure at 4:30am.

We were told to check our bags at the last minute, and the communication was poor.

Lost our luggage in Heathrow. Showed up 3 days into a 7 day vacation. Very inconvenient and disappointing!!

Can you travel to Japan? Restrictions for UK travellers explained

By Abigail Malbon

Can you travel to Japan Restrictions for UK travellers explained

Japan has had strict border restrictions since the Covid pandemic started in 2020, making travel to the country impossible for most. According to the Japan National Tourism Organisation, the number of international tourists to Japan fell from nearly 32 million in 2019 to just 250,000 in 2021. But when will we be able to go again? Here’s what you need to know about travel to Japan.

Travel rules for Japan from the UK

Until recently, UK travellers could enter Japan, but under strict circumstances. A gradual opening eventually allowed up to 50,000 travellers a day into the country – after an initial limit of 20,000, only on organised tours.

As of Tuesday 11 October 2022, UK travellers can enter Japan in uncapped numbers, as long as they follow the entry requirements set out. Travellers must complete any required forms on the MySoS app or website, and sign a written pledge that they will abide by the Japanese rules on self-isolation and other covid measures.

There is no requirement to be vaccinated in order to enter Japan. However, those who are vaccinated and boosted are not required to produce a negative PCR test before their flight – note that AstraZeneca is not accepted as a valid booster. The UK covid pass can be used to demonstrate your vaccination record to the authorities on arrival.

If visitors are not vaccinated, or are unable to prove that they have been, a negative PCR test certificate must be produced within 72 hours of travelling to Japan. Unvaccinated travellers are also unable to use the MySos fast track system.

How to get to Tokyo from the UK

How we got to Tokyo

A great city in every sense of the word Tokyo is one of the biggest in the world.  It’s packed with things to do , things to see, great food and drink and some of the nicest people we’ve ever had the privilage to meet.  If you’re wondering how to get to Tokyo from the UK you’ve come to the right place.

Read on for information such as which airlines fly there from the UK, airport hotels and transfers.

tokyo travel from uk

To get to Tokyo from the UK obviously means flying.  We flew from Heathrow and there are 4 airlines that fly non-stop to Tokyo from here.  Japan Airlines (JAL), Virgin Atlantic, ANA and British Airways.

We flew with British Airways.  There are other airlines you can travel with that involve stops on the way including Emirates and Etihad .  We didn’t fancy that.  Plus, we always get great service with British Airways and enjoy the flights.

We always use Skyscanner to check out who flies where and the best current deals on flights.

Heathrow Airport Hotels

Sheraton Skyline Heathrow Airport Hotel

We usually book flights which depart early in the morning to make the most of the day at the other end.  For this reason we like to have a pre-flight overnight stay to start our trip a day early and to make sure we’re close to the terminal for departure.

The night before our flight we stayed at the Sheraton Skyline on Bath Road.  We really like this hotel and have stayed there several times.   There are lots of other hotels on Bath Road and you can check them out on  Booking.com

Breakfast at Sheraton Skyline

We like the fact the rooms here have 2 double beds, some with a runway view.  And the breakfast is always great.  The hotel also has a swimming pool which we usually take advantage of as a great start to the trip.  We like keeping hold of our car keys and parking here allows us to do that.

Including the parking for 10 days we paid £165.25 (this included return Hoppa Tickets to the airport).

We booked The Sheraton Skyline as part of an Airport Hotel and Parking deal through Holiday Extras .  In our experience Holiday Extras offer unbeatable value for pre-flight accommodation and parking.  We also booked the Heathrow Hoppa through them.

We have no hesitation booking through Holiday Extras.  They provide the best value for money when it comes to hotels and parking.  Even better value than booking direct with hotels or booking separately.  You can also book extras such as breakfast and airport lounges.

Timing can make a huge difference when you book with Holiday Extras.  We’ve found prices changing significantly over a six week period, sometimes saving as much as 33%.

Transfer to Terminal

tokyo travel from uk

We used the Heathrow Hoppa bus for our transfer to the Airport.  The buses do tend to get quite full, but it’s an efficient service which runs regularly from outside the hotel.  You can get a taxi to and from the terminal which cost approximately £12-£15 each way.  The Hoppa cost £11 per adult for a return ticket with children under 15 travelling free.

From the Sheraton to Terminal 5 it takes approximately 15 – 20 minutes and the Hoppa runs from 4.30 a.m. to 11.30 p.m.  Buses run every 30 minutes to Terminal 5 and every 20 minutes to the other terminals.  Remember to ask your driver where your bus departs from for your return journey as signs for the buses/stops have been an issue for us.  Usually it is stop 17 or 18.

Flight

The flight to Tokyo from the UK takes 11 hours 45 minutes.  With complimentary meals, drinks, snacks and a couple of naps, it didn’t feel that long.  As with most long haul flights you get your own screen and access to a huge catalogue of films, tv, music and games.  The crew on these flights really were excellent.  Very helpful and accommodating.

There are 2 airports in Tokyo.  Haneda and Narita ( www.narita-airport.jp ).  We flew in to Haneda ( www.haneda-airport.jp ) as this is closer to the city.  Transfer time depends on which way you choose to travel to your Hotel.

Transfer from the Airport

We had intended to use the Airport Limousine Bus Services ( www.limousinebus.co.jp ) to transfer to our hotel.  Because of our arrival time we would have had a long wait until the first one of the day.  So we decided to use public transport.  Having spoken to a very helpful lady at the information desk we decided to take the Tokyo Monorail ( www.tokyo-monorail.co.jp/english ) to Tennozu Isle Station.  We then took a train on the Rinkai Line to Shinkiba Station.

As our hotel was situated in Tokyo Bay we then took the train on the Keyo Line to Maihama.  Door to door this cost approximately £20 for 2 adults and 2 children.  At the time the prospect of travelling this way felt a little daunting.  But we really enjoyed it.  We also learnt a lot about how the transport system worked.  This really helped us with future journeys for the rest of our stay.

A taxi in to Tokyo will take approximately an hour and cost around £60 – £70.

tokyo travel from uk

A bonus of using the rail travel option was that we got to tick off one of our ‘to do list’ items before we even got to the hotel .

You’ll see vending machines like this all over Tokyo.  They contain items that we don’t see back in the UK.  From different flavours of Coke to soups and noodles.  Some of us were particularly excited about this and we made it our mission to sample as many of these as possible.  See more about things to eat in our page Food, Drink & Money in Tokyo .

Are there direct flights to Osaka, Japan?

Osaka is home to two international airports, and both are hubs for Japan Airlines, which is local. You won't find direct flights to either of Osaka's airports Kansai Intl (KIX) and Itami Airport (ITM). There are one-stop flights to Kansai Intl, which are mostly provided by Emirates. It is possible to fly into Kansai International Airport from any of the major London-based airports, and flying from London Stansted Airport (STN) will be the cheapest option.

Are there direct flights to Japan?

Most flights to Japan from the UK are indirect, though three airlines do offer direct flights to Japan: they are All Nippon Airways (ANA), Japan Airlines (JAL) and British Airways (BA). Direct flights are the fastest to reach Japan (approx. 11-12h), though they are normally more expensive. Indirect flights take longer (approx. 14h) but are often cheaper and stopovers are often short, especially when changing flights within Europe.

Top tips for finding cheap flights to Japan

  • Enter your preferred departure airport and travel dates into the search form above to unlock the latest Japan flight deals.
  • When looking to find cheap flights to Japan from the United Kingdom, you have the choice of three major London-based departure airports and five major international arrivals airports in Japan. The most frequent flights are between London Heathrow (LHR) and Tokyo Haneda (HND).
  • When you find cheap flights to Japan, you must keep in mind that public transport from any of the airports has limited operational times. They generally shut down at midnight and open at 05:00. This means that if you are travelling after hours, you should arrange transportation with your hotel or be ready to catch a taxi.
  • One-stop flights from London to Japan offer the best deals. Although slightly longer than direct flights, they are more frequent and you have the choice of leaving from one of four major London-based airports. Most one-stop flights arrive in Tokyo and are operated by Finnair, Turkish Airlines or Qatar Airways. The average one-stop flight is 18 hours.
  • Flights to Japan arrive at several aviation hubs. The busiest airports are in Tokyo – Haneda Airport (HND) and Narita International Airport (NRT). The distance from Haneda to central Tokyo is about 14km, while Narita is about 60km from the city centre. If you fly from the UK, you are most likely to land at Narita, but some international flights do land in Haneda. Although further from the city centre, Narita Airport is very well connected to central Tokyo with fast and efficient trains.
  • The two international airports in the centre of the country also handle many of the incoming international flights to Japan. The first is Kansai International Airport (KIX) in Osaka and the second is Chubu Centrair International Airport (NGO) in Nagoya.
  • If you would like to fly to one of the islands in Japan, such as Kyushu, you can fly to Fukuoka Airport (FUK) or Okinawa Airport (OKA). However, these flights usually require a stopover in Tokyo.
  • British citizens travelling to Japan do not need a visa to enter the country, and you can stay for up to 90 days with no visa. You may need to present a proof of a return ticket or ticket for onward travel.
  • Japan’s currency is the yen they mainly use cash. You may have trouble paying with a foreign credit or debit card, so it is advisable to exchange some yen prior to travelling to Japan. However, most hotels, large department stores and mid- to high-end restaurants do accept cards.
  • If you are planning to travel to Japan during Sakura season, note that airfares and hotel rates may be higher than usual.

Top 5 airlines flying to Japan

Great crew, Japanese domestic flight is just a drink service but crew are very attentive

Again I paid for an upgrade on my credit card didn’t get it need a refund. . American I not good at gettin in contact for refunds.

l enjoyed the variety of good and drink choices. The flight attendants were very quick and efficient to our needs.

The food from Lagos to Amsterdam was was very poor compared to AMS-YYZ

The flight was delayed for 2 hrs. Because they didn’t have a crew to fly. And it is not a first time for klm to do that. Last time they cancelled my filght and rebooked me 3 days later. Not reliable airline

Seats are fair enough for medium tall people. Good food all the trip. Fight attendances are warm

no issues at all... Kudos to the food. This time was really really good

The worst airline. Cancelled flight 30 min before boarding and rebooked on flight after 3 days.

I travel frequently. The flight was late again... KLM should really try and be on time

The flight itself it was great nice food the crew were very nice and helpful, Checking in from Birmingham wasn't great long queues for bag dropped, And I had my hand luggage case taken away from me even though I requested to have it with me as I had breakables items. I was told I can not because of the length of the flight with no explanation at all no options was given for me to take my fragile items out of my case it was taken away with hold buggage I find the staff member who was checking me in very unpleasant !! Can we please be advise if the rules have changed about the the carry on hand luggage it will be easier to be advise on booking your tickect if we not allowed to take the hand luggage with me. Overall I had a good flight .

I requested wheel chair assistance , it was confirmed via email that inwoood get it but I didn’t get it . The last leg of my trip to Nigeria was the worst.

The Crew have no idea about the food they're serving the passengers. The Crew MUST be instructed before each flight about the menu that will be served to the passengers, whether the food is vegetarian or non-vegetarian, whether it is Halal, Kosher or not.

Seats actually fit a human! Snack options were a bit lame but that’s ok

For the price we paid, I couldn’t complain. Was good value for money. Service was excellent but food was mediocre. Crew were excellent and spoke English. You will never go hungry. The food was ample but was mediocre. Entertainment limited and wifi doesn’t all allow you to access some social media. The best part was comfortable seats and bed (business class) with a screen to close out the rest of the cabin.

Good airline for the price. The Air stewardess are great, nothing is to much trouble. Will use again.

Great staff and food. Seats pretty uncomfortable but plenty of legroom. Entertainment system outdated.

We were cutting it close on our connecting flight and notified all staff at departing gate and flight attendants. From the start, we were told to check in with the international transfer desk by everyone, except for one lady who wanted to argue the time difference that was already taken into account. We also asked if we could try to exit the plane first (our family of 4 and 8 others on the same connecting flight). They just told us to check in with international transfers. We landed and had very little time to make our next flight. We were not offered any assistance or communication to the receiving gate. We ran all the way to the international transfers gate only to be turned away. I think we could have made it if we were allowed to exit and a call was made to other check in counter. After that we spent 6 grueling hours with our kids trying to rebook a flight. No food of any type of compensation was offered besides a dirty hotel room. The ladies with China Eastern at the Shanghai International counter were rude an unhelpful. We were directed to 3 different counters and waited before they said they forgot about a hotel. It was a long, miserable day. I believe this could have all been avoided.

The landings were smooth . Being unable to check-in online was terribly stressful and the queue at Haneda exemely long. We paid extra for window seats and did not get them.

Flight was fine, however we were not able to check in online, this adds to travel stress. Luckily check-in at Heathrow was quick, but we did not get the seats we paid extra for. We paid for a window and 2 aisle seats from Shanghai to Tokyo leg, but they changed us to middle seats. Not good :(

You’re in the three parts of my life, the China Eastern air crew remembered and wish me happy birthday. I was given pastries on two different occasions and a complementary drink. The stew is wish me happy birthday and gave me a birthday card. Everything was first class. Thank you.

It was my birthday while I was on the flight on China eastern airlines. They celebrated my day by giving me a personalized birthday card and also a very delicious pastry. I was surprised and thankful by the China Eastern crew! The whole staff was kind and professional? My second flight into China and the most memorable! Thank you-

Couldn’t fly since they wouldn’t issue a boarding ticket. Something to do with not taking the departing flight since it was cancelled due to weather. No notice or anything about the trip being invalid. The app made it seem like I was all good for it. Never trusting travel agency

I will never fly through China again. Maybe it was the mandatory retinal scan just to transfer to another flight or the complete set of fingerprints they require. There are many better and inexpensive flights to Asia if you look.

The flight was delayed for almost 5 hours, but I understand that it was not up to the company, however how they could handle the situation better, they never apologized for that delay, moreover despite passengers being there for 7 hours only thing they did was to give a bowl of instant noodles, afterwards on the plane tiny snacks, people were there starting from lunch time and we’ve arrived to destination at almost midnight

It was a flight operated by Aer Linus for BA and the plane and crew were very good but the food selection was average.

Flying economy is like being packed into a sardine can.

For many, Japan has remained a highly desirable destination located too far out of reach—the bright neon lights, high-tech robotics, geisha mystique and small samurai villages have just been dreams.

However, travel to Japan from the UK has never been easier; with direct flights from London Heathrow now departing daily to Tokyo in the east and Osaka in the west, Japan is well and truly yours to explore. A number of airlines also offer indirect but cheaper flights to Japan also from London Gatwick; and if you're flying from a smaller UK airport outside of London, hop on a short flight to one of the continent's many hubs such as Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport and Helsinki Airport for direct access to even more of Japan's great cities.

With fierce competition between airline carriers seeing an ever-increasing number of cheap flights to Japan, what used to be a “will-we-ever?” trip has turned into “when-shall-we-go.”

A whole host of other airport options are available throughout Japan welcoming in domestic and international flights—from the great white island of Hokkaido in the north, industrial Nagoya in the middle and subtropical Okinawa way down south. When planning your trip, be sure to research the airports that will offer you your most convenient path into Japan!

All information is correct as of the time of writing. Independent research is always advised for the most up-to-date and relevant information.

Book flights to Tokyo

On the surface, Tokyo might seem like any big metropolis. Its towering skyscrapers, bright lights and late-night lifestyle wouldn’t seem out of place in New York or London. But look a little closer, and Tokyo’s unique identity becomes clear. Holding tightly to tradition while championing the ultra-modern is this city’s forte. Here you can watch the ancient sport of sumo wrestling before hopping on a high-speed bullet train to visit Mount Fuji.

Fly to Tokyo with British Airways to experience the old and new in one trip. The Shibuya Crossing is a great place to start your adventure. Join hundreds of commuters, shoppers and revellers making their way across the busiest pedestrian crossing in the world. Then escape the chaos by visiting one of the city’s many temples and shrines. They offer a window back in time to Tokyo before the cat cafes, eccentric Harajuku fashion and eclectic line-up of museums. So does the Kabuki Theater, where performers wear elaborate make-up and costumes that date back to the 1600s. Book your holiday to Tokyo now.

Tokyo flight FAQs

A flight to Tokyo takes approximately 13 hours and 40 minutes from London.

Tokyo is a popular holiday destination in the spring when the cherry blossoms bloom. It also attracts visitors in the autumn when the city has traded the greens of summer for reds, oranges and yellows, and the temperature isn’t too hot. Search for flights outside of these periods to save, and use our low fare finder to find the best prices.

Big cities offer lots of choice for visitors, so you can adapt your trip to cost as much or as little as you’d like. Budget eats are on the cards thanks to cheap street food and chain restaurants with set menus. Supermarkets are a great place to pick up an edible bargain too. You can also save money on your accommodation costs while enjoying an authentic Tokyo experience by staying in one of the city’s capsule hotels.

Haneda Interational Airport is the airport closest to Tokyo’s city centre, and there are several transport options to get you to your hotel. A taxi takes around 30 minutes and buses can take a little longer, while the monorail or Keikyu train takes about 15.

Tokyo has to be seen to be believed. Divided into 14 different districts, there’s a corner for every visitor. Head to Akihabara for sensory overload – giant anime characters plastered across billboards, the pings and whizzes of arcade games, and manga cafes. For a peaceful afternoon  in nature, the Imperial Palace has several gardens and a Buddhist temple to explore. Hungry for Tokyo’s best sushi? Work your way around the restaurants in Tsukiji to find your favourite.

Tokyo has a varied climate, with warm springs and hot, humid summers. Temperatures in the summer months can reach up to 40°C, particularly during the rainy seasons in September and June. January is the coldest month of the year, with average temperatures of around 2 - 10°C.

Discover outstanding service from the moment you book. Fly with just hand baggage and you can carry two bags in the cabin free of charge. Choose our checked baggage option and you can travel with hand baggage and two 23kg bags checked into the hold, plus enjoy free seat selection 24 hours before you fly. On board you’ll find HEPA-filtered air, quality on-board catering, and a warm, uniquely British welcome.

Simply relax and let us take care of you, every step of the way.

Tokyo (, Tōkyō) is Japan's capital and the world's most populous metropolis. It is also one of Japan's 47 prefectures , consisting of 23 central city wards and multiple cities, towns and villages west of the city center. The Izu and Ogasawara Islands are also part of Tokyo.

Prior to 1868, Tokyo was known as Edo. Previously a small castle town , Edo became Japan's political center in 1603 when Tokugawa Ieyasu established his feudal government there. A few decades later, Edo had grown into one of the world's largest cities. With the Meiji Restoration of 1868, the emperor and capital moved from Kyoto to Edo, which was renamed Tokyo ("Eastern Capital"). Large parts of Tokyo were destroyed in the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923 and the air raids of 1945.

Today, Tokyo offers a seemingly unlimited choice of shopping , entertainment, culture and dining to its visitors. The city's history can be appreciated in districts such as Asakusa and in many excellent museums , historic temples and gardens . Contrary to common perception, Tokyo also offers a number of attractive green spaces in the city center and within relatively short train rides at its outskirts.

Furthermore, the report provides a decent idea of where travelers’ money will go the farthest, even if it excludes items like lodging and travel. Here are the seven cheapest destinations for 2024 that offer the most travel value.

1 dead, 30 injured due to severe turbulence on Singapore Airlines flight

One person is dead, and 30 are injured after a Singapore Airlines flight faced severe turbulence.

"We can confirm that there are injuries and one fatality on board the Boeing 777-300ER," the airline said in a statement . "There were a total of 211 passengers and 18 crew on board."

The man who died was a 73-year-old British man who likely died of a heart attack, reports Reuters . Seven people are said to be critically injured.

Flight SQ321 departed from London's Heathrow Airport on Monday and was supposed to land in Singapore, but instead was diverted to Thailand and landed at 3:45 p.m. local time on Tuesday after requesting an emergency landing.

According to an update the airline posted on its Facebook page , the rest of the passengers, the majority of whom were from Australia, the United Kingdom and Singapore, and the crew were being evaluated and treated as needed by medical personnel at the airport.

In its third update posted to Facebook , the airline announced that a Singapore Airlines team arrived in Bangkok from Singapore to "support our colleagues and the local authorities on the ground."

They added that they are providing assistance to the passengers and crew that were on board the flight at the hospital and airport. The airline previously stated that 18 passengers were hospitalized due to the incident.

Climate change making turbulence worse: But here's why you shouldn't worry (too much)

Four Americans were on board the flight, the airline said.

"Our priority is to provide all possible assistance to all passengers and crew on board the aircraft," the airline said. "We are working with the local authorities in Thailand to provide the necessary medical assistance, and sending a team to Bangkok to provide any additional assistance needed."

Singapore Airlines also stated that it is working with "relevant authorities" to investigate the incident.

The airline added that Relatives of the passengers can call Singapore Airlines' hotlines at +65 6542 3311 (Singapore), 1800-845-313 (Australia), and 080-0066-8194 (the United Kingdom).

"Singapore Airlines offers its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased," said the airline's press release. "We deeply apologize for the traumatic experience that our passengers and crew members suffered on this flight.

What happened on flight SQ321?

The plane began to experience "sudden extreme turbulence" at 37,000 feet about 10 hours after it departed Heathrow. The pilot called for an emergency landing, according to the update posted to the airline's Facebook.

The flight landed Tuesday afternoon local time at Bangkok's airport, Suvarnabhumi International, after it fell into an air pocket, reports Reuters.

A passenger told Reuters they felt the sensation of falling and rising during the event.

Dzafran Azmir, a 28-year-old student on board the flight, told the outlet there was a drop and people who were not wearing seatbelts were launched into the ceiling.

"Suddenly the aircraft starts tilting up, and there was shaking so I started bracing for what was happening," said Azmir.

The student adds that people's heads shot through the cabins overhead and dented or broke them.

Photos and videos circulating on social media show the purported damage to flight SQ321 after it experienced the turbulence.

Who were the passengers?

The passengers on board are from the following countries, according to the airline:

◾ 56 from Australia

◾ 47 from the United Kingdom

◾ 41 from Singapore

◾ 23 from New Zealand

◾ 16 from Malaysia

◾ Five from the Philippines

◾ Four from Ireland

◾ Four from the United States

◾ Three from India

◾ Two from Canada

◾ Two from Indonesia

◾ Two from Myanmar

◾ Two from Spain

◾ One from Germany

◾ One from Iceland

◾ One from Israel

◾ One from South Korea

Boeing's response

In a tweet, Boeing, the creator of the plane that experienced the turbulence, said it is in contact with SIA and is ready to support the airline.

"We extend our deepest condolences to the family who lost a loved one," it tweeted . "And our thoughts are with the passengers and crew."

Is turbulence getting worse?

Unfortunately, yes. Climate change is increasing the severity and frequency of turbulence as the planet warms and winds intensify.

"The atmosphere is getting more turbulent; there will be more severe turbulence in the atmosphere," Paul Williams, a professor of atmospheric science at the University of Reading previously told USA TODAY .

Turbulence is also becoming more unpredictable in some ways, as so-called clear air turbulence, the kind that happens outside of storm systems, increases the most. That kind of turbulence can be harder for pilots to avoid than choppy air associated with storms because it's less visible with radar and other forecasting tools.

Even so, Williams said, turbulent air remains relatively uncommon at flight altitudes, so it's unlikely for passengers to be involved in an incident like the one that affected Flight 321.

"The absolute amount of turbulence is small," he said.

How can travelers stay safe in turbulence?

The best way to avoid injuries or worse from turbulence is to stay seated whenever the fasten seat belt sign is on, and to buckle up whenever seated on a plane, even if the sign is off.

Unsecured passengers and objects being thrown around are the biggest injury risk factors during turbulence.

"The people who are not strapped in now also become projectiles themselves and can harm people when they come back down," she said. "I know plenty of flight attendants who have had career-ending injuries from turbulence," Sara Nelson, president of the Association of Flight Attendants, previously told USA TODAY .

Planes themselves are designed to structurally withstand turbulence much more severe than what pilots will ever intentionally fly through. The people and objects inside the cabin that pose the most danger at that point.
