"Tokyo is like nowhere else on earth, and I love revealing the city's incredible diversity to our guests. Whether you want to explore ancient temples or check out the shopping mecca of Shibuya, there's something for everyone in Tokyo."
Travel Director
Wander through Ameyoko Street Market
We’ll lead the way through this buzzing street market, with almost 200 shops selling everything from clothing and trinkets to fresh fish, spices and sweets. Located along the Yamanote Line tracks, you’ll mingle with the locals seeking out the best bargains, and learn how the market originated as a black market selling candy after WWII.
Explore the center of Asakusa to the Sensoji Buddhist Temple
You’ll feel like you’ve traveled back to the Tokyo of old in the Asakusa as you wander past traditional craft shops and food stalls, before arriving at the staggeringly ancient Sensoji temple. Originally built in 628, and rebuilt countless times since, this is the oldest temple site in Tokyo, and we’ll wander through the beautiful crimson pagoda, woven with incense.
Learn the mesmerizing rhythmic art of Taiko drumming
You’ll dive into the traditional culture of Japan when you join a Local Specialist to discover the soul-stirring art of Taiko drumming. You’ll be amazed at how Taiko performers pound on the large drums in special choreographed movements to form a connection with the musical energy, and you can even have a go at playing the Taiko drums yourself.
Admire the Imperial Palace of Tokyo
Home of the Emperor of Japan, the Imperial Palace is one of the best places to visit in Tokyo. The magnificent palace is spread across three kilometers (almost two miles) of stunning grounds, and we’ll take you on a tour to see the two ornate bridges that form the entrance, and explore the lush Imperial Palace East Gardens, an oasis of lakes and blossom trees.
Pass through the vermilion-lacquered Kaminarimon Gate
You'll love walking through the picturesque Kaminarimon Gate, or the ‘Thunder Gate’ on your Tokyo tour. This Buddhist archway is famed for its huge paper lantern painted in red-and-black to represent thunder and lightning, and the gate leads to the famous Nakamise shopping street where you can soak up the charming old Tokyo atmosphere.
Our top 5 things to do in Tokyo
Our Tokyo tours take you to all the most iconic Tokyo attractions, from the spectacular Imperial Palace to the Sensoji Buddhist Temple with over a thousand years of history.
Edo-Tokyo Museum
This museum may be housed in a futuristic building, but the exhibits tell the fascinating story of Tokyo, or Edo as it was known until 1869. You’ll explore the cultural heritage, political climate and architecture of the Edo Period, with amazing models of towns and life-sized figures that give an insight into what life was like in the ancient Edo Period.
Samurai Museum
Get a blast from Tokyo’s medieval past when you visit the incredible Samurai Museum, with more than 70 exhibits on the history of combat in Japan up until the 16th century. You’ll feel completely immersed in the world of the samurai as you don a kabuto helmet, wear samurai costumes and even see combat reenactments with talented actors.
Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum
Set in the beautiful surrounds of Ueno Park, this fantastic art museum is the perfect place to discover traditional Japanese art forms and the works of famous Japanese artists, from calligraphy and ceramics to sculpture and woodblock prints. The museum also regularly features exhibits of iconic international artists like Van Gogh, El Greco and Da Vinci.
Best museums in Tokyo
You can’t visit this fascinating city without stopping by a few museums, and our Tokyo trips will point you in the direction of the very best institutions.
Edomae sushi
Japanese sushi is one of the most beloved foods around the world, but it's Edomae sushi that has really stood the test of time. First created during the Edo period, this special sushi traditionally only uses fish that has been marinated for a few days and your Tokyo guide will show you where to find the most authentic Edomae sushi in the city.
Unaju (Freshwater Eel over Rice)
This traditional Japanese dish is made with freshwater eel that is prepared in a kabayaki style, where the eel fillets are grilled and basted in a sweet and salty sauce and dusted with powdered sansho (Japanese pepper). Usually served with steamed rice to balance the rich unaju flavor, you have to give this classic dish a try in Tokyo.
These adorable Japanese sweets are a beloved treat in Tokyo, and come in an endless array of varieties, shapes and colors. Whether they’re made with sweet azuki bean paste (anko), rice cakes (mochi), Japanese agar (kanten), rice, flour or sesame paste, you should always enjoy your wagashi with a hot cup of Japanese green tea.

Tokyo View Tours
As the capital of Japan, Tokyo is known as one of the main cities with various attractions and sites. It is a center of pop culture with many types of entertainment for all kinds of visitors. The Tokyo Tower, the Asakusa Sensoji Temple are only some of the most visited landmarks of Japan and are usually symbolic of Tokyo as a result of their popularity. Tokyo is not only the capital of Japan, but it is also a center for attractions including souvenir shops, cafés, restaurants, and observation decks, among other various sites and locations. One of the many memorable attractions of Tokyo includes the Tokyo Tower, which was the tallest steel-supported structure in Japan until 2010. Even so, it still remains one of the most iconic Japanese landmarks in Tokyo and in many films. The Imperial Palace is among one of the many popular sites to visit as well. It was reconstructed after being wrecked during WWII. The palace's moat bridges are called Meganebashi (literally, “Eyeglass Bridge”) because it looks like a pair of spectacles reflect off the moat’s water. The Asakusa Temple is also one of the most frequented Buddhist temples in Tokyo. It is a temple with a grand red lantern at the gate, which is called the "Kaminarimon" (the Thunder Gate) since it was built with statues of the wind god and the thunder god. Past the gates are various visitors who go through the abundant shops for snacks, souvenirs, and food. An example of the popular shops that are available are those that have traditional Japanese snacks prepacked or made fresh right before the eyes of the audience. Other shops will also sell soft serve ice cream with interesting flavors like wasabi, green tea, yam, melon, cherry blossom, and sesame seed among many others. The area is full of souvenirs that have a variety of goods, increasing the interest of most who pass by their stores. The temple itself has various charms, or "omamori" that are used for protection, luck in studying, passing, driving safely, travels, etc. Other sites in Tokyo include the Edo Museum, which has scale models of indoor buildings, ships, bridges, and other historical structures and figures, making it one of the more interesting museums. The museum also features scheduled shows, some of which includes entertainment that Edo citizens and travelers would see in towns. Odaiba is one of the popular artificial islands of Japan. It is full of shopping stores, malls, entertainment centers, and great sceneries. Among one of favorite picture spots or sites to visit is the Fuji TV building, a broadcasting station famous for their drama and animation programs. The miniature Statue of Liberty is also a famous spot overlooking the Rainbow Bridge and the Tokyo Bay, making it a rather favored location for most visitors who want a good view. The Rainbow Bridge is also a popular attraction at night when its many lights turn bright with the colors of the rainbow. It can be seen on shore or even from some of the restaurants in the area. In Tokyo’s Asakusa, guided ‘lies tour’ rife with hoax stories charms visitors
- From spinning tales about nonexistent brands to drafting in local businesspeople to make outlandish claims, the trip is a hit with tourists
- 'Speaking to many of the people who come, they seem to enjoy telling lies with their friends and family as a kind of hobby,' the event's organiser says
On a busy afternoon in Tokyo's Asakusa district, a tour guide leads a small group to a pavement outside a branch of clothing chain Uniqlo, where he produces a tape recorder.
"The company Minato Shokuhin, best known for their Japanese ginger ponzu sauce, used to be based here. You might remember the jingle," he says, pushing play. After the tune ends, a man in his early 20s volunteers a memory of his grandmother humming it. "It was very popular with her generation," the guide agrees, and the tour moves on.
But their shared nostalgia for a discontinued condiment is, in fact, a collective lie. Minato Shokuhin never existed, its jingle was created by an enthusiast making up tunes for nonexistent brands, and the reminiscences of the younger man, getting into the spirit of the tour, are bogus.

The group of 16 being led through Tokyo's old downtown district are on the Uso no Tsua , translating as "lies tour," an unexpectedly successful guided trip along a 2-kilometre route in one of Tokyo's most-visited neighbourhoods.
Japanese town blocks view of Mount Fuji to fend off badly behaved tourists
The tour, which comes as AI-generated text, images and videos raise fears about what information can be trusted, reassures attendees they can "take in information knowing that everything is a lie that they do not need to check".
Its creator and leader Shigenobu Matsuzawa, a professional guide and former comedy storytelling event organiser, lies for almost the entirety of the tour's runtime.
Among the claims made when Kyodo News attended were that the tree where tour participants gather is the visual inspiration for the tree emoji on the Android smartphone operating system, and that the tourist drivers of go-karts roaring up and down the Kaminarimon-dori are commuters from central Japan's Gifu prefecture.
Matsuzawa has gone further than speaking untruths, creating a three-dimensional parallel universe of lies by drafting in local businesspeople to make outlandish claims and employing a gallery of fake products and brands like a cursed cookie and plastic bags from a fictional defunct convenience store.
Attendees are encouraged to offer their own complementary lies to his stories, and competitive sections see participants riffing on themes including their made-up takes on what Japan's oldest pun is.
The tour went viral on social media months before its first staging in early March, and even stoked speculation the idea itself was a lie. Amid strong demand, its initial March to May run has been extended multiple times to now end in August, with around 400 people having experienced it in its first six weeks.
Soma Ito, a 17-year-old travel blogger who signed up despite his suspicions the "lies tour" could be a hoax, said he would "probably never forget the feeling of relief when it turned out to be real."
"Normally when travelling, I just think about how beautiful or amazing something is, but this time was different. I had to consider what I think is true, what's a lie," he reflected. "It made me think, lying isn't necessarily always bad, and that it can help us feel all sorts of different emotions."
Matsuzawa said he was shocked by the level of interest in an idea he admits "started with me telling my friend I'd do it as a joke, maybe to a couple of people."
Kyoto to ban visitors from geisha district area over 'out-of-control' incidents
The 41-year-old runs the company, Maniana Tours, with his wife and other enthusiasts. Their other tours offer guides to what genuinely exists, but with a twist - one involves offering participants a deep dive lasting the full 90 minutes into the stories and history behind a single location such as a park.
Asked why he thinks his latest idea captured imaginations, Matsuzawa said he takes a wider view on what can be defined as a "lie."
"If you think about it, almost all movies and novels are fiction, so you could call them lies," he said. "It means a lot of things people enjoy earnestly aren't true. Giving tours, too, reminds me the line between the truth and falsehood isn't so clear - local legends, for example, might be lies but they're stories we choose to share," he said.
He added that giving the tour has changed his view on how people engage with lies.
"Speaking to many of the people who come, they seem to enjoy telling lies with their friends and family as a kind of hobby. I've realised many treat lying as the first step in creativity," he said.
"We all have that creativity, that drive to make things up, and I think that helped create the reaction to the tour. It showed me there are people out there who want a space to tell untruths."

Borneo over Bali? Here are 5 'destination dupes' for travelers who want unique getaways without the crowds
- Matt Berna of Intrepid Travel said young travelers seek immersive, unique experiences.
- Some are skipping popular tourist spots in favor of so-called "destination dupes."
- Book a vacation in Seoul instead of Tokyo, for example.
Millennial and Gen Z travelers are over tourist traps.
Intrepid Travel's President of the Americas, Matt Berna, told Business Insider that his company has seen a shift away from popular destinations among tourists between 18- and 35- years old. Intrepid Travel is a small group travel company.
According to Berna, young travelers aren't bogged down by FOMO — or the "fear of missing out" — that influenced older generations. Instead, they want to set the tone.
"They want to be a trendsetter, going to the next cool place," he said.
That's why more young folks are booking so-called " destination dupes ," alternative vacation spots that are more affordable and less crowded than the well-known locations.
Intrepid Travel compiled a list of destination dupes travelers should consider this year.
Visit Corsica instead of Positano.
According to Intrepid Travel, the Mediterranean island of Corsica is a good alternative to Positano, a cliffside village on the Amalfi Coast in Italy.
"Unlike the bustling and tourist-heavy atmosphere of Positano, Corsica offers a more tranquil and peaceful environment, allowing travelers to unwind and immerse themselves in the island's serene and calming ambiance," the company said.
In Corsica, "travelers can enjoy a more authentic, tranquil, and immersive experience, exploring the island's natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and diverse activities without the overwhelming crowds typically found in more popular tourist destinations," the company added.
Visit Seoul instead of Tokyo.
Japan's tourism industry is booming , with a record-breaking 3.1 million visitors this March.
Seoul is a great destination for travelers who want to avoid overcrowded attractions but still explore an Asian megacity like Tokyo.
"Seoul provides an authentic and immersive cultural experience, allowing travelers to explore traditional Korean customs, arts, and lifestyles in a dynamic and modern urban setting," Intrepid Travel said. "This experience provides a deeper understanding of South Korea's rich cultural heritage, which may be less accessible in the more globally popular tourist spots."
Visit Panama instead of Barcelona.
Intrepid Travel told BI that travelers should consider adding Panama to their bucket list instead of Barcelona.
"Panama's diverse natural landscapes, including lush rainforests, exotic wildlife, and pristine beaches, provide a captivating backdrop for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers," the company says.
The adventure travel company added that Panama has a "vibrant cultural scene, influenced by its indigenous heritage, Afro-Caribbean roots, and Spanish culture." It offers a "dynamic and diverse experience for travelers seeking to immerse themselves in local traditions, folklore, and contemporary arts, providing an authentic and enriching journey that differs from the more European-centric cultural landscape of Barcelona."
Travel from Kefalonia to Corfu rather than Split to Dubrovnik.
People with their hearts set on traversing Croatia's coastline might also like island-hopping across the Ionian Sea near Greece.
"Sail through some of the most beautiful Greek islands in the Ionian Sea," Intrepid Travel said. "Travelers can journey to secluded coastlines, private islands, verdant rolling hills and orchards, historic Venetian architecture, warm and inviting tavernas and some of the world's most transparent azure waters."
The company added: "With its unspoiled landscapes and pristine beaches, Kefalonia to Corfu offers a serene haven for travelers seeking a tranquil escape, unlike the more crowded destinations."
Tour Borneo over Bali.
Bali is a popular tourist destination in Indonesia , but Intrepid Travel said travelers can find similar vibes on the island of Borneo.
"While Bali is undoubtedly a stunning destination with its beautiful beaches and rich cultural heritage, Borneo offers an entirely different experience that is unmatched in its own right," Intrepid Travel said.
The company said that Borneo has a "rich cultural tapestry" with influences from indigenous communities that have preserved their culture "for generations."
"Travelers can immerse themselves in the authentic lifestyles of the local communities, partake in traditional ceremonies, and gain valuable insights into the unique customs and beliefs that define Borneo's cultural heritage," Intrepid Travel said. "By choosing Borneo over Bali, travelers can embark on a journey that transcends mere sightseeing and offers a profound appreciation of the natural wonders and cultural richness that define this remarkable destination."
