In the United States, bus travel is often seen as a cheaper and more convenient alternative to flying or driving. Bus companies offer a variety of services, from long-distance trips between cities to short-distance shuttle services between airports and hotels.

When it comes to bus travel in the USA, the biggest icon is  Greyhound , America’s flagship service. Yet, particularly in rural areas and the heart of the USA , travelers will come across other bus providers.

The companies can be differentiated according to the areas they serve, their target clientele, and their pricing.

In the Northeast, Ourbus , Flixbus , Adirondack Trailways, New York Trailways and Megabus dominate the landscape. Jefferson Lines ‘ and Southeastern Stages’ buses can majorly be found in the heart of the US, as they serve routes between regional cities and rural areas. In Florida and Texas, a premium bus provider, RedCoach , offers rides in three different classes. And there are many more add to that list.

Some of those companies operate the same route. Free Wi-Fi, power outlets, a restroom, air conditioning and reclinable seats are now standard features on most buses.

But if they seem to have the same amenities and serve the same route, what makes one bus line better than another? In general, there are a few things to consider when choosing which bus line is best for you.

Known for:  Its iconic logo and vast coverage, Greyhound is the biggest bus company in the United States. They cover all states except Alaska and Hawaii.

Are tickets refundable?: Tickets can be fully or partially refunded in the form of a voucher. Refund percentage varies based on cancellation time: less than 1 day (25%), 1 to 6 days (50%), 7 to 29 days (75%), 30 days or more (100%). Maximum deduction is $35 USD from the ticket price. Booking & service fees are not refundable.

Boarding requirements: show your ticket on your phone or print it for the driver to scan it. You also need a valid photo ID.

The company was acquired in late 2021 by Flix SE, a global mobility provider that started services in the USA in 2018. The Greyhound brand will be a part of this global company.

Known for: being a prominent intercity bus service provider that offers affordable, comfortable, and eco-friendly transportation across Europe and the United States, with an extensive network of routes and modern amenities for passengers. Boarding requirements: show the driver your printed ticket or your online ticket on your phone. You must also show a valid photo ID.

Known for: its low-cost trips offered in the US, Canada, and Europe. Travelers can often find tickets for as little as $1 when booking in advance.

Coverage : hundreds of destinations in the US, with a particular focus on the Northeast (Washington to NYC, Philadelphia to NYC) and Florida (Miami to Orlando).

Amenities : Megabus buses are equipped with free Wi-Fi (on most routes), comfortable reclining seats, bathrooms, air conditioning, power outlets and panoramic windows.

Are tickets refundable? No, but Megabus does provide an option for modifying reservations. You can make changes online, but only if it’s done more than 3 hours before your scheduled departure. My mother, father, brother, and two sisters traveled by bus over most of the USA from the time I was seven to 12 years of age. We were a vagabond family, traveling from town to town. Not for fun, but out of necessity. Greyhound was the company we were almost always on, with Trailways in some situations. From 1950 to late 1955, this was our life. There were no amenities such as wifi, power outlets, However, the seats did recline, there was air conditioning, there was heat in the cold. No TV screens, no lap trays. Small restrooms in the back of the bus. Friendly drivers who also invoked authority. Regular rest stops for resting, breakfast, lunch, and dinner. As a kid, I loved it!

A comedy bus wants to take people around Newport. One councilor says it's no laughing matter

Members of Newport City Council are pushing back against the presence of a comedy tour bus that hopes to bring its business to Newport this summer.

“They act like there’s some kind of public conveyance that people can get around downtown and all, no, it's for them to make money, period, end of story, and all these people that, you know, you go out and have a cookout in your yard or something, and they can’t enjoy their family out there without a bus going by and narrating god knows what, so that’s what its about,” Councilor Jeanne Marie Napolitano said.

Comedy Bus City Tours , going under the business name Comedy Bus LLC, currently operates its 90-minute bus tours around Providence. The usual tours start at Brass Monkey Bar and Grill and make one short stop at a local restaurant or brewery. Guests can bring alcohol, although not hard liquor, onto the bus and sip while listening to a local comic acting as the tour guide. The company also hosts brunch tours, which stop at two restaurants, and private tours.

It applied for an addition to its current jitney license from the state Division of Public Utilities and Water Carriers to start offering tours in Newport, although the hearing on the license for May 9 was rescheduled. Due to this schedule change, Napolitano withdrew the resolution opposing the comedy bus tour from the council’s May 8 meeting agenda.

Although Napolitano’s resolution was withdrawn, she plans on bringing it back to the council docket with stronger language recommended by City Solicitor Christopher Behan.

The original resolution noted the company would have to request both an entertainment license and liquor license from the City of Newport before it begins operations. It also noted that the city has an ordinance on the books explicitly against “pub crawls,” which the code defines as the organized, commercial travel of a large group of individuals for which the primary purpose is to consume alcohol at more than one premises.

It stems from an incident in May 2004, although the resolution stated it was in 2002, where a fight between a Fairfield University student and a University of Rhode Island student attending a pub crawl ended with the Fairfield student falling backward, getting crushed underneath the wheels of the bus carrying the students around on their pub crawl tour.

Napolitano had been the councilor to introduce that ordinance banning pub crawls back then.

Beyond her general objections to the idea of a bus tour pub crawl, Napolitano also has concerns over the noise generated by the comedy bus tour. The buses Comedy Bus LLC uses for its tours are old school buses that have had the windows removed and replaced with clear vinyl siding that can be opened. With the addition of the comedian using a microphone, and the company’s promise of R-rated shows, Napolitano said she was concerned about how the tour might impact local residents.

“Can you imagine somebody standing around with their kids and all of a sudden hear ‘F this’ or something,” Napolitano said. “That doesn’t work for me or anybody else.”

She noted that, although she was concerned about R-rated material being heard by passersby, she did not include it as a part of the resolution language, because the material would be free speech protected by the First Amendment.

The new resolution, which she provided to the Newport Daily News, focuses on the possible noise issues instead, highlighting that the proposed bus routes snake through a couple of residential streets in the city and that could pose noise issues for those residents.

The resolution also objects to the jitney license on the grounds that it neither addresses the needs of the public nor serves a public convenience. One of the requirements for a jitney license is that the applicant prove the public convenience and necessity of a new jitney service.

After multiple attempts, the Newport Daily News was unable to reach Comedy Bus LLC for comment at the time of reporting.

8 killed, dozens injured when bus carrying farmworkers crashes, overturns in Florida

At least eight people were killed and eight more were critically injured when a bus carrying dozens of workers on their way to a farm crashed and overturned in Florida on Tuesday morning, authorities said.

The bus was traveling west on State Route 40 on its way to a watermelon farm and was carrying 53 laborers when a Ford Ranger was heading in the opposite direction on the same road. A witness told troopers on the scene that the Ford moved into the westbound lane.

The two vehicles collided "in a sideswiped manner," according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The bus then ran onto the shoulder of the road, struck a fence and two trees and overturned, troopers said.

In addition to the eight people killed and eight in critical condition, another 10 had serious injuries and at least 25 occupants of the bus had minor injuries. About 40 people were transported to hospitals, the highway patrol said in a statement. The agency warned the number of fatalities could increase because of the conditions of the critically injured bus occupants.

The driver of the pickup, Bryan Maclean Howard, was arrested at a hospital where he had been taken for treatment on eight counts of DUI manslaughter, the state highway patrol said Tuesday afternoon.

Marion County records show Howard, 40, was cited for several traffic-related offenses from 2004 to 2019, including failure to wear a seatbelt, driving on a suspended or expired driver's license, failure to stop at a red light, careless driving and leaving the scene of an accident with property damage. He has also been convicted of possessing drug paraphernalia and grand theft.

'My heart goes out to them'

Sheriff Billy Woods said the people on the bus are hard-working individuals and the crash was a tragedy.

" My heart goes out to them," Woods said. He said his agency is assisting investigators, especially with Spanish language translation. Officials are trying to notify the victims' families.

At least some of the workers were Mexican nationals, Mexico's Foreign Affairs Secretary Alicia Bárcena said on social media .

Florida crash: Driver charged with DUI-manslaughter in crash that killed eight farmworkers

The laborers on the bus worked for a private company and were on their way to Cannon Farms in Dunnellon, Florida, about 20 miles outside of Ocala, when the crash occurred about 6:35 a.m. The owner of the company was also on the bus and transported to a hospital. The bus was a 2010 International Bus, highway patrol said.

The incident caused the temporary shutdown of part of a highway in Marion County, the sheriff's office said in a social media post .

The Farmworker Association of Florida has set up a GoFundMe account to help the victims and their families.

Transportation accidents No. 1 cause of death for farmworkers

The deadly crash Tuesday is the latest to claim the lives of farmworkers in the U.S. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, transportation accidents were the leading cause of death for farmworkers in 2021. Such accidents include roadway crashes and incidents such as tractor overturns.

Eight people were killed on Feb. 23 in California when a van carrying farmworkers and a pickup collided, The Associated Press reported . Only two people in the van were wearing seatbelts, officials said.

In July 2016, another crash in Florida involving a bus carrying migrant farmworkers killed four people. Federal investigators said gaps in safety regulations were at play in the crash. It was caused by caused by a bus driver who didn't stop at an intersection, and who was likely fatigued after picking crops, officials said.

Group urges increased protections for farmworkers

In response to Tuesday's crash, the League of United Latin American Citizens called on Florida to increase safety protections for farmworkers.

"They are the ones who put the food on our tables and nourish the state and our country. It is too easy to dismiss this as just another accident. Florida must take every possible step to protect its essential workers, who are human beings and the backbone of the state's economy," LULAC President Domingo Garcia said in a statement.

Julie Taylor, executive director of the National Farm Worker Ministry, said when farmworker work-related accidents happen, her organization becomes concerned with the impact to workers and their families. Many farmworkers may not have health insurance, she said. And when they can't work because of their injuries, their families can often be left without income.

Immokalee farmworker transportation company impacted by deadly crash that killed eight

The crash that killed eight farmworkers and injured dozens more in Central Florida Tuesday also injured a Southwest Florida business owner.

The bus that crashed and overturned was registered to Immokalee-incorporated Olvera Trucking Corporation, and owned by Jose Olvera.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the bus was carrying 53 people, mainly farmworkers, to Cannon Farms in Ocala. The farm's watermelons are sold in supermarkets across the U.S. and Canada, per its website.

At about 6:35 a.m., while the bus was heading west on SR 40, a brown Ford Ranger pickup truck headed eastbound crossed the dividing line and crashed into the westbound bus, a witness told FHP.

The bus ran onto the south shoulder, struck a board fence and two trees, and then overturned, troopers said.

While eight were reported dead as of 12:30 Tuesday, Florida Highway Patrol officials said more might die, given the severity of injuries suffered in the crash. At least 25 occupants suffered minor injuries.

The driver of the other vehicle involved is hospitalized in serious condition as well, FHP said. He was arrested and charged with eight counts of DUI manslaughter.

“We will be closed today out of respect to the losses and injuries endured early this morning in the accident that took place to the Olvera Trucking Harvesting Corp,” Cannon Farms wrote on its Facebook page . “Please pray with us for the families and the loved ones involved in this tragic accident. We appreciate your understanding at this difficult time.”

Cannon Farms did not return a request for comment by publication.

The FHP's Specialized Investigations Reconstruction Team will investigate the crash. The National Transportation Safety Board is also monitoring the situation and will collaborate with relevant authorities to investigate the accident thoroughly.

Officials on scene said the owner of Olvera Trucking was aboard the vehicle and had to be transported to a hospital after the crash. Olvera Trucking was incorporated in 2010 in Immokalee by Lehigh Acres resident Jose Olvera, according to Florida’s Division of Corporations records. A company representative did not return calls or emails by publication time.

It was not immediately clear if any of the farmworkers also involved in the crash were from Lee or Collier counties.

At least some may have been in the country on an H-2A visa, a short-term visa intended to supplement the number of farmworkers in the U.S.

The News-Press / Naples Daily News reviewed a Department of Labor job order for Cannon Farms, which afforded Cannon 43 H-2A visas for workers to harvest watermelon and maintain the fields six days a week, Monday through Saturday, for $14.77 an hour between May 1 and June 4, 2024.

According to a statement by the League of United Latin American Citizens , the U.S.’s largest and oldest Latino civil rights organization, officials confirmed the workers had the necessary documentation to be employed in Florida.

Local organizations, including Collier County-based farmworkers’ rights group Coalition of Immokalee Workers , were scrambling to figure out the identities of those involved so they could provide support if needed.

Immokalee, an unincorporated area of Collier, is home to roughly 27,000, according to Census Reporter data , many of whom are farmworkers. The per-capita income is just under $18,000 annually, and 23% of residents live below the poverty line, nearly double the state’s poverty rate. Roughly 30% of children under 18 live in poverty, and about a quarter of seniors do as well.

“If there’s something we can do, we will, but as of right now we don’t have any information on them, or the names,” said Immokalee-based Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church Director of Catechism Hilda Bustamante.

Speaking late Tuesday morning at the west Marion County crash site , Sheriff Billy Woods said his heart went out to the victims and their families. Woods said his agency is assisting investigators, especially with Spanish language translation. Officials are trying to notify the victims' families.

Woods called the people on the bus hard-working individuals and said the crash was a tragedy.

LULAC expressed its sympathy for the victims and their families, and called for more stringent safety protections of farmworkers during transportation.

"(Farmworkers) are the ones who put the food on our tables and nourish the state and our country," Florida LULAC State Director Asia Clermont in a statement. "It is too easy to dismiss this as just another accident. Florida must take every possible step to protect its essential workers, who are human beings and the backbone of the state's economy.”

Coalition of Immokalee Workers echoed LULAC's call for stringent safety standards around farmworker transportation.

"The watermelon industry is a core part of the Immokalee community, and the CIW in particular," a Coalition statement read.

"Incidents like these are far too common and we know that transportation safety laws – especially when it comes to farm labor buses – go largely unenforced.  While accidents will happen, protecting workers while transporting them with mandatory and enforceable safety provisions, like seatbelts and safety inspections, can reduce injuries and deaths when accidents do occur."

As of 3:20 p.m. Tuesday, AdventHealth Ocala had transferred two of its 16 crash patients to other facilities. "The remaining 14 patients in our care are in the process of being discharged from the hospital," a spokesperson said.

HCA Florida Ocala Hospital listed seven crash victims in critical condition and two in stable condition. Its sister facility, HCA Florida West Marion Hospital, had one patient in stable condition.
