Tour de Romandie 2023: The Route
The Tour de Romandie opens with a pan flat prologue of 7.2 kilometres long before stage 1 serves a route with a lumpy first part and a flat finale.
The finale of the 2nd stage looks promising for the punchy sprinters in the peloton. Two short climbs inside the last 13 kilometres make way for a flat finale.
It’s back to the chrono specialist on the fourth day of action. Stage 3 is a 19 kilometres ITT featuring a 6 kilometres climb at roughly 5%.
The Queen Stage is played out on a 161.3 kilometres route with an elevation gain of 4,157 metres. The finish climb adds up to 20.7 kilometres and the average gradient sits at 7.7%.
The last stage of the Tour de Romandie is a lumpy endeavour from Vufflens-la-Ville to Geneva. A bunch sprint or a successful are to be expected.

Tour de Romandie: Richard Carapaz wins stage 4 as Juan Ayuso's lead crumbles
Prologue - Maikel Zijlaard wins prologue from early start on dry course
Maikel Zijlaard (Tudor Pro Cycling) earned the first leader's jersey of the Tour de Romandie with his victory in the prologue Tuesday. The 24-year-old completed the short 2.3km time trial in 2:55 and to the hot seat before the rain made the streets in Payerne treacherous.
Australian Cameron Scott (Bahrain Victorious) came closest to unseating Zijlaard, taking second place with less than a second separating the duo. Julian Alaphilippe (Soudal-Quickstep) finished third. Stage 1 - Godon and Vendrame go 1-2 for Decathlon AG2R
Dorian Godon (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) struck out in the bunch sprint on stage 1 with teammate Andrea Vendrame on his wheel, carrying the formation right through to the line to make it a 1-2 for the team.
Godon's win also sent him to the top of the overall leaderboard with Gianni Vermeersch (Alpecin-Deceuninck), who finished third on the stage, slotted into second on the general classification with a six second deficit to the Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale rider. Stage 2 - Thibau Nys wins stage as Plapp attacks for GC Thibau Nys (Lidl-Trek) won the sprint to the line against break companion Andrea Vendrame (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) who took second two days in a row while late joined Luke Plapp (Jayco-AlUla) tailed off in the final stages of the sprint showdown to take third. The order of the podium also ended up being reflected in the overall rankings, but Plapp was undoubtedly the biggest beneficiary as he now sits ahead of all his GC rivals even before the time trial stage which he had been targeting before the race.
Stage 3: Brandon McNulty takes comfortable win on time trial
US Champion Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates) put his stamp on the stage 3 time trial, winning the 15.5km race against the clock in 20:06. His fellow countryman Magnus Sheffield (Ineos-Grenadiers) was a distant second, finishing the time trial 13 seconds slower, while UAE Team Emirates also finished with Felix Großschartner in third place at 15 seconds down and Juan Ayuso in fourth at 21 seconds down, taking the overall race lead in Oron.
Stage 4: Tour de Romandie: Richard Carapaz wins stage 4 as Juan Ayuso's lead crumbles
Richard Carapaz leapt away to win the stage to Leysin while Juan Ayuso lost touch with the chasing group on the final climb and dropped out of the race lead. Carlos Rodriguez (Ineos) took over as the race leader with one stage remaining.
Stage 5: Tour de Romandie: Carlos Rodríguez wins overall
On a rainy final stage, the peloton finished the Tour de Romandie with a bunch sprint, won by Dorian Godon, while Carlos Rodríguez finished safely to secure his first stage race win.
Tour de Romandie 2024 overview
The 77th edition of the Tour de Romandie returns to the calendar on the final week of April, 23rd to 28th. The six days of racing brings together all the cantons of French-speaking Switzerland, Romandie, for WorldTour competition.
When the event launched in 1947, there were four days of racing. It was elevated to the WorldTour in 2011 and now with six days of competition it serves as preparation for riders and teams headed to the Giro d’Italia. In 2022, organisers launched the Tour de Romandie Féminin which continues on the Women's WorldTour.
Irishman Stephen Roche holds the current record for most GC victories, taking the title in 1983, 1984 and 1987. There are 12 other riders who have a pair of overall titles, with Primož Roglič (Jumbo-Visma) reaching that achievement most recently with wins in 2018 and 2019.
In 2023, Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) used a solo triumph atop Thyon 2000 on stage 5 to take the general classification lead. He secured the title on Sunday, with Matteo Jorgenson (Movistar) in second, 19 seconds back, while Damiano Caruso (Bahrain Victorious) rounded out the podium at 27 seconds.
This year's Tour de Romandie route is 45.5km shorter than 2023, but still provides more than 11,000 metres of climbing. The Prologue in 2024 will take place in Payerne on the east side of Neuchâtel Lake. For a second consecutive year a mid-race individual time trial will break up the action in the mountains, this one 15.5km loop around Oron. The queen stage on Saturday will be a 151km route to the Vaud Alps resort village of Leysin, with the overall finish on Sunday at Vernier, to the west of Geneva.
Tour de Romandie race history
The Tour de Romandie was founded in 1947 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Swiss Cycling Union. That first edition brought together 10 teams and a total of 40 riders for four stages of racing, Belgium's Désiré Keteleer securing the overall victory.
Between 1983-1987, Irishman Stephen Roche won the Tour de Romandie three times and still holds that record. Twelve riders have won the race twice, Primož Roglič (Jumbo-Visma) last taking a pair of GC titles in 2018 and 2019.
Eight Swiss riders have won the Tour de Romandie, Tony Rominger securing the crown on home soil in 1991 and 1995, while Pascal Richard went back-to-back in 1993 and 1994.
The race was elevated to ProTour level in 2006, then five years later to WorldTour status. The high alpine mountains of Switzerland are on full display for the event, and provide the perfect tuneup for the first Grand Tour of the season, the Giro d'Italia, which arrives the following week.
