He gave us so much information about every part of LA, houses used for movies, celebrity homes and neighborhoods, and threw in a few extra detours for us. This tour could have cost way more than it did for what we got! Our group was 14 people. We had plenty of time at each stop. Thank you for showing us so much in a short time!! Knowing some basic information about Beverly Hills will make it easier for you to understand why the city is such a vital part of our popular LA city tours . Bordered by the Santa Monica Mountains on its northern side, Beverly Hills is just six miles northeast of Santa Monica and only nine miles west of LA.

Beverly Hills is well-known for being one of the most expensive places to live in the United States. Beverly Hills became part of the United States when the U.S. acquired California in the Treaty of Guadeloupe Hidalgo in the mid-1800s. The city got its name from the gorgeous hills located in Beverly, MA.

  • Beverly Hills

The grass is literally greener on the other side of the geopolitical fence. Take a drive along Santa Monica Boulevard and cross into Beverly Hills and you’re immediately greeted with a tree-lined street and this city-spanning park. Beverly Gardens stretches 1.9 miles, from the stately Doheney Fountain to the illuminated Electric Fountain, with a narrow strip of lawn in between. The park hosts the Beverly Hills Art Show during the third weekend in May and October, but its real claim to fame is the famous Beverly Hills Sign, a water encompassed photo op between Canon Drive and Beverly Drive.

Many people dream of being Julia Roberts shopping on Rodeo Drive, but few can afford to buy from the array of high-end designers seen in the film Pretty Woman . Window-shopping, then, is the order of the day along this swanky stretch of luxury retailers. Along Two Rodeo—the $200-million faux cobbled walkway—browsing tourists mingle with serious spenders. A hop away is Anderson Court, which is the only shopping mall designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

Speaking of Pretty Woman , this ornate Four Seasons-operated gem is famous for its role in the 1990 film. The hotel recalls 19th-century French splendor while recent additions add 21st-century sophistication. The Beverly Wilshire even offers a shopping and date night “Pretty Woman for a Day” package—sans the prostitution part, of course. If you’re looking for upscale eats, it’s also home to Cut and the BLVD .

This 55-room Tudor estate is a good way to get a glimpse into the lives of L.A.’s historical one percent. Though the interior is only open for events and tours, the exterior gardens are open free of charge. Take a stroll through alleys of poplars and cypress trees, a fountain and reflecting pool, and a terraced pool area, along with a public educational guide.

Live like Hollywood royalty at the Beverly Hills Hotel

The famous pink stucco façade, the manicured grounds and the sumptuous rooms of the Beverly Hills Hotel look as fresh and fanciful as they did on opening day more than a century ago. It oozes exclusivity: Every screen legend from Valentino to Arnie has slept in this fabled hideaway or held court in its still-popular Polo Lounge—which should be your primary destination if you can’t swing an overnight stay here.

  • Historic buildings and sites

Otherwise known as “the Witch’s House,” this 1921 home looks like a haunted fairytale cottage with crooked chimneys and a creaky fence. It was originally built as a storybook studio office in Culver City and moved to its present home in Beverly Hills in 1934. Ever since, it’s served as a private residence; though you can’t go inside, you’re welcome to join the curious onlookers who pass by each day (especially on Halloween).

Department store magnates Virginia and Harry Robinson built this Beverly Hills estate in 1911, and upon their passing it entered into the county’s hands as a public park. Because of the six-and-a-half-acre estate’s quiet residential location, it’s only accessible via docent-led tours, which you’ll need to book in advance. Once inside, you’ll find finely manicured gardens and a just as impeccably assembled mansion. In keeping with its storied history of lavish Hollywood parties, the estate hosts a swanky garden party at the beginning of each summer.

These cupcake-dispensing machines are all over town now, but we’ll always have a soft spot for the Beverly Hills original. We think Sprinkles might just bake the best cupcakes in L.A.—simple ingredients, time-tested recipes and a fun rotating weekly schedule of flavors all add to the flagship bakery’s unique charm. But what happens when you want a fluffy, sugary fix at 2am? The cupcake ATM, of course! This 24-hour vending machine stays continually stocked with the bakery’s best treats, making it possible to indulge your sweet tooth around the clock.

30 Best & Fun Things to Do in Beverly Hills (CA)

Looking for the best and fun things to do in Beverly Hills, CA?

Beverly Hills, California, is the epitome of fame, luxury, and wealth. The city was originally established in 1914 as a Spanish ranch and has been the residential choice of the tinsel town for several years.

Many Hollywood stars reside in Beverly Hills, and you can take a tour of the star’s homes as it is one of the most popular activities here. Do visit the famous Beverly Hills Hotel or the historic Greystone Mansion, amongst many others.

Let’s explore some of the best things to do in Beverly Hills, California.

You will see popular landmarks such as the statue “Torso,” Beverly Wilshire Hotel, and the House of Bijan. You will also find stores devoted to Gucci, Dior, Tiffany & Co., and others.

Even if you are no fan of shopping, the history of this area and its figure in pop culture has elevated it to one of the most visited streets globally.

Vivian Ward spelled some immortal words about this place, calling it a “big mistake” if you miss a chance to shop on Rodeo Drive.

2. Beverly Hills must-visit: Mulholland Drive

Mulholland Drive

Mulholland Drive has gained a world reputation as the home of Hollywood celebrities. Visiting this Drive is one of the best things to do in Beverly Hills.

Mulholland Drive should be an essential part of the itinerary for any trip made to Beverly Hills.

3. Greystone Mansion and Gardens

Greystone Mansion and Gardens

One of the best things to do in Beverly Hills, California, is visiting Greystone Mansion and Gardens  – the 1927 home of billionaire Ned Dohne Jr. and his wife, Lucy

It is a 55-room mansion sitting on 16 acres of land and is an astounding example of the English Tudor Revival. Check out the extensive gardens with beautiful flowerbeds, fountains, and towering trees.

Tours are held inside here on Saturdays, and they sell out months in advance.

The mansion is a famous filming location and is the acclaimed Chilton Academy in Gilmore Girls and Rachel’s house in The Bodyguard.

Visiting the gardens is free of charge, so why not spend an hour or more in this simply amazing setting.

Address: 905, Loma Vista Drive, Beverly Hills, California.

Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation provides a guided tour to visitors in appointment, allowing them the opportunity to visit not only the foundation but also the foundation estate, annex, and the encompassing gardens.

The exhibition here is dynamic, so every visit promises a different experience.

Virginia Robinson Gardens

Next is taking a trip to the Virginia Robinson Gardens . You need to head back outside to this six-acre property as it makes the list of top things to do in Beverly Hills.

Located in the city’s center, Virginia Robinson Gardens will take your breath away. It features many gardens, with each having a specific style and theme.

A walk in the Italian Renaissance Terrace Gardens offers magnificent views of mature trees, gardenias, camellias, and azaleas.

Wander amongst the Kitchen Garden overflowing with herbs and vegetables, or head to the Rose Garden with heirloom roses. The gardens, pool pavilion, and mansion are available to view only by a guided tour.

You could also visit the home of Beverly Hills first lady for an experience of some of the affluence of the early 1900s.

Address: 1008 Elden Way, Beverly Hills, California.

6. Check out Will Rogers Memorial Park

Will Rogers Memorial Park

Constructed in 1912, Will Rogers Memorial Park is a public park located in the city’s heart. Though small, the park has been popular amongst families ever since, and it is a heavily visited tourist spot.

As you wander through the winding paths, you will see a big pond with an impressive fountain in the middle. It is dedicated to the first owner of the Beverly Hills Hotel – Margaret J. Anderson.

The park boasts rose gardens, spacious lawns, and palm and dragon trees.

The Will Rogers Memorial Park is the ideal place to stop by and take some rest after concluding your shopping trip on Sunset Boulevard.

Address: 2600 Franklin Canyon Dr, Beverly Hills, CA 90210.

8. Dine at Tempura Endo

Tempura Endo

Adding to our list of top things to do in Beverly Hills is Tempura Endo, a small classic tempura bar in the city. It has eight chairs in the small Zen-like dining room and more than eight overlooking the kitchen.

This import from Kyoto serves tempura just the way the Japanese eat it, with a stream of tiny morsels of rare uni, wagyu, uni, or king crab breaded in a batter containing deep-fried and California chardonnay in giant copper vats, offered in omakase-style.

They have a fixed menu containing a seasonal appetizer, hashiyasume (a side dish to refresh your palate), sashimi, rice, and a special salad.

While watching the events unfurl in front of you, grab a drink with anything from imported Japanese beer to high-priced champagne, a respectable wine selection, and a massive selection of hot and cold sake.

They got a dinner à la carte menu too.

Address: 9777 S. Santa Monica Blvd, Beverly Hills, CA 90210

SELF-GUIDED BEVERLY HILLS CELEBRITY HOMES TOUR

If you've decided to make your own trip through Beverly Hills, the following information should be pretty handy. This route will take over 2 hours.

We will start at Dean Martin's previous home since it is close to multiple local coffee shops like Alfred's or Kelly's Coffee & Fudge Factory. Grab a snack or beverage before your own guided tour to fuel you!

Use a smartphone to find your way to each address and discover the houses of celebrities both past and present.

Streets in the hills are notorious for twists and turns, so it is best to have a co-pilot helping with directing the driver.

Considering that many of these estates are located near busy streets, you may not be able to stop. Also, be kind.

People do live in most of these homes so be respectful.

1. Dean Martin (511 N. Maple Drive)

The beloved musician Dean Martin spent his last days in this wonderful house until his death in 1995.

Martin was well known as a singer and most famous for songs like That's Amore, Mambo Italiano, and Everybody Loves Somebody. but he also starred in several films such as Ada and Rio Bravo .

In addition to acting and performing, he also enjoyed success as host of The Dean Martin Show .

He was a member of the rat pack for a time too. Dino did it all, and he clearly had good taste in real estate!

Head northwest on Maple toward Carmelita and then turn left at the 1st cross street onto Carmelita. Turn right onto Rexford.

2. Boris Karloff (629 Rexford Drive)

Actor Boris Karloff. Image Source: Wikimedia user Wikiwatcher1 on September 1st, 2010.

Although he was a prolific actor, he became known primarily for his work in genre films.

3. Madonna (9425 Sunset Blvd)

Musician and Actress Madonna. Image Source: Wikimedia user David Shankbone. Photo taken at the premiere of I Am Because We Are at the 2008 Tribeca Film Festival.

Madonna, the Queen of Pop, changed the music industry and is know for her constant reinvention.

After purchasing this house for $12 million dollars in 2003, Madonna had it remodeled to include a reported 9 bedrooms and 15 bathrooms.

The property also includes a tennis court, a pool, and a full-sized theatre.

In 2013, she sold this residence for $19.5 million dollars. In 2021, Madonna bought a mansion previously owned by The Weeknd.

Head south toward Sunset and take a right onto Sunset. Turn right onto Foothill.

4. Frank Sinatra (915 Foothill Road)

Just down the road from his buddy Dean's house, you'll find the former property of yet another Rat Pack member.

Like his friend, Frank Sinatra was well known for both acting and singing.

Sinatra secured notable roles in movies like Ocean's 11 and The Manchurian Candidate . He lived at this house from 1982-1998.

Head east toward Foothill and then take a left. Foothill turns slightly right and becomes Doheny then turn left on Loma Vista.

5. Greystone Mansion (905 Loma Vista Drive)

While not a celebrity residence, many celebrities have set foot in this mansion.

Originally built in 1928 in Tudor revival style as a wedding gift from oil tycoon Edward Doheny to his son Ned Doheny and wife Lucy.

This masterpiece had 55 rooms, stables, kennels, a tennis court, a swimming pool, and exquisite English-style gardens.

A tragic fate bestowed on Ned only 4 months after moving into the massive home, however. He was found dead with his friend Hugh Plunkett. It was ruled a murder-suicide though it remains mysterious to this day.

Lucy continued living in this home with her children until 1955. It was then sold and the movie studios started renting it.

Today this mansion is a historic landmark, and museum and is still used for filming.

The building's resume is extensive. The Social Network, The Holiday, Young and the Restless, Spiderman, and Death Becomes Her , to name just a few.

It is Kermit's mansion in The Muppets and it is Chilton Academy in Gilmore Girls.

The film There Will be Blood is actually about Edward Doheny and was also filmed at the mansion!

Head southeast toward Loma Vista and turn right. Turn right onto Doheny and then right onto Schuyler.

Turn left onto Readcrest and then left onto Lindacrest. A final right onto Coldwater Canyon to reach your destination.

Head north for about 1.5 miles to your next location.

The property includes a pool, a tennis court, and fantastic views.

In the documentary Bowling for Columbine , filmmaker Michael Moore visited this residence to speak with Mr. Heston regarding his very strong views on gun control in the United States.

Next is a slight left onto Mulholland and then a sharp left onto Franklin Canyon. Now turn right onto Mulholland.

8. Jack Nicholson (12850 Mulholland Drive)

Actor Jack Nicholson. Image Source: Wikimedia user Georges Biard, 2002.

This is probably one of the most disturbing locations you'll visit on your trip through Beverly Hills.

Not only is Jack Nicholson's estate tied to criminal investigations, but the house that once existed here has since burned down, prompting some to describe the land as "cursed."

However you choose to see it, this is certainly one of the most notable sites in Hollywood history.

The next location is literally right next door.

9. Marlon Brando (12900 Mulholland Drive)

Actor Marlon Brando. Image Source: Screenshot from On the Waterfront trailer via IMDb.

Not only did Brando live right next to Jack Nicholson, but he also lived with his neighbor for a short time.

The two were reportedly pretty good friends, likely as a result of living so close together.

Although he had a long and illustrious career, most people remember this actor for his titular role in the beloved film The Godfather .

From here, drive west on Mulholland Drive until you reach Benedict Canyon Drive and turn left.

10. Elton John (1400 Tower Grove Drive)

Musician Elton John. Image Source: Wikimedia user Richard Mushet on July 12th, 2008.

The history of this property is as old as Hollywood itself.

Originally owned by silent film actor John Gilbert, the house would eventually change hands several times.

Eventually, the home would be sold to Elton John in 1977, and he would live there until 1981.

Unfortunately, the original mansion that once existed here has since been demolished due to structural problems.

After taking a look at this estate, keep going south on Benedict Canyon Drive.

11. Bruce Springsteen (1244 Benedict Canyon Drive)

Musician Bruce Springsteen at a music festival. Image Source: Wikimedia user Bill Ebbesen on July 7th, 2012.

Although this estate looks deceptively small from the road, the reality is that it sprawls back quite a bit.

Springsteen has reportedly lived here for quite some time, and there are indications that the property is much larger than it might appear.

With a musical career that spans over 50 years, Springsteen has won several Grammy Awards between the years of 1985-2013.

Turn left on Tower Road to find our next stop.

12. Jay Leno (1151 Tower Road)

Comedian Jay Leno. Image Source: Wikimedia user Lee Stranahan on July 18th, 2008.

As host of The Tonight Show for almost two decades, Jay Leno became one of the most notable faces of late-night television in America.

According to several records, he has lived on this property since 1987.

The house is equipped with plenty of space for his various automobile projects.

As an avid fan of cars, Leno has been a host of his own show entitled Jay Leno's Garage since 2015.

To find our next location, drive south on Benedict Canyon Drive until you reach Sunset Boulevard. Turn right here and prepare to turn left onto Roxbury Drive.

13. Mia Farrow (809 Roxbury Drive)

Actress Mia Farrow. Image Source: Wikimedia via 20th Century Fox, March 16th, 1970.

This was the childhood home of Mia Farrow.

She lived here with her mother Maureen O'Sullivan, a famous actress who played the role of Jane in several early Tarzan movies.

Mia was the daughter of Maureen and John Farrow, both of whom lived at this estate.

Mia Farrow would go on to make a name for herself with starring roles in films such as Rosemary's Baby and The Purple Rose of Cairo .

The next stop is just down the road.

14. Lucille Ball (1000 Roxbury Drive)

Actress Lucille Ball. Image Source: Wikimedia via the Lever Brothers on August 31st, 1951.

Most people know Lucille for her unforgettable role in the classic sitcom I Love Lucy .

While alive, she made her home in this beautiful modern colonial house.

If you can believe it, Jack Benny lived right next door at the time, and he would sometimes visit them on a whim.

According to some anecdotes, Lucy would personally hand out candy at the front door every Halloween.

You'll find the next destination just down the street.

15. Diane Keaton (1015 Roxbury Drive)

Actress and Filmmaker Diane Keaton. Image Source: Wikimedia user Firooz Zahedi, 2011.

This Spanish-style home was originally owned by Betty Grable, but it would eventually be sold to Diane Keaton.

Being something of a preservationist, Keaton renovated the house to keep it in good condition.

Eventually, even Madonna would own this building at one time. The house has 7 bedrooms, 8 bathrooms, and a full-size swimming pool in the backyard.

To reach our next stop, head back to Sunset Boulevard and drive south until you reach Copley Drive.

17. Elvis Presley (144 Monovale Drive)

Musician and Actor Elvis Presley. Image Source: Wikimedia via Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1957.

This was the last Beverly Hills property owned by The King.

This was the home of Lisa Marie Presley when she was born in 1968, and Elvis lived here with his family until 1973.

This house features a lot of windows that provide excellent views of Beverly Hills. In addition to the open floor plan, there is also a nice pool and spa in the backyard.

From here, simply drive north on Monovale Drive until it turns into Carolwood Drive.

18. Rod Stewart (91 Carolwood Drive)

Musician Rod Stewart. Image Source: Wikimedia user Rodstewartonair on July 10th, 1986.

Just north of the country club, you'll find this house on Carolwood Drive.

This is the former residence of famous musician Rod Stewart, who has won multiple awards for his work.

Stewart recorded his Great American Songbook albums at this residence, and he once stated that the song Stardust was the perfect theme for this house.

Keep driving north on Carolwood Drive to find our next destination.

19. Michael Jackson (100 Carolwood Drive)

Musician Michael Jackson. Image Source: Wikimedia user Casta03, 1992.

This is actually the last residence of Michael Jackson before his untimely death.

Jackson was known as The King of Pop, producing several hit records and winning a lot of awards throughout his career.

The house would eventually be sold for $18.1 million in 2012.

Our next location is even further north on Carolwood Drive.

20. Walt Disney (355 Carolwood Drive)

Animator and Filmmaker Walt Disney. Image Source: Wikimedia via New York World-Telegram and the Sun staff photographer: Fisher, Alan. 1938.

Further north on Carolwood Drive, you'll find one of the former residences of Walt Disney.

Although the original house no longer stands, there are signs of his influence all over the place, including a small train that became known as the Carolwood Pacific Railroad.

Originally purchased in 1949, the property would eventually be sold for $74 million in 2014 and transformed into the Kilgour Building.

Once you're done here, make your way back down to Sunset Boulevard. From there, turn onto Charing Cross Road.

21. Hugh Hefner (10236 Charing Cross Rd)

Hugh Hefner at Glamourcon 2010. Image Source: Wikimedia user Toglenn on November 13th, 2010.

You'll find the fabled Playboy Mansion located on the west side of the Los Angeles Country Club.

When Hefner originally purchased the mansion in 1971, he got a pretty good deal for $1.05 million.

This historic building has since been sold to another party after being listed at $200 million.

Indicative of the legend behind this particular location, the rare zoo permit given exclusively to this property transferred hands to its new owner when it was sold.

Learn some fun facts about Hugh Hefner on our Hollywood Tour. Drive west until you find North Beverly Glen Boulevard and go north.

22. Steve Martin (1005 Beverly Glen Blvd)

Actor and Musician Steve Martin. Image Source: Wikimedia via David Shankbone on April 23rd, 2008.

This is just one of the houses owned by Steve Martin.

Although he began his career as a notable comedian in films such as The Jerk and Planes, Trains, and Automobiles , he has since spent most of his time playing the banjo.

As a musician, Martin has won a Grammy and even created his own award – The Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in Banjo and Bluegrass.

After visiting this location, head south again and make your way back to Sunset. Once there, look for Bel-Air Road and drive north until you reach Copa de Oro Road.

23. Nicolas Cage (363 Copa de Oro Road)

Actor Nicolas Cage. Image Source: Wikimedia user nicolas genin on September 4th, 2009.

The next stop is the home of Nicolas Cage who is an American actor and film director known for The Rock, Con-Air, and more recently Pig.

Watch the 1983 film Valley Girl starring young Nicolas Cage after visiting L.A. for fun shots of Lala Land in the 80s.

Although Cage was the most recent owner of this estate, it was also previously owned by Dean Martin in the 1960s then sold to Sir Tom Jones in 1976.

The red-brick property was designed by Gerald Concord and is affectionately known as the "Pink Palace".

This residence is situated on one of the priciest streets in America called Copa de Oro Road (translates to Cup of Gold in Spanish).

The interior includes polished wood paneling, contributing to the 18th-century country house style that was originally intended by the architect.

Our next stop is right down the road.

24. Cary Grant (10615 Bellagio Road)

Actor Cary Grant. Image Source: Wikimedia user Crisco 1492 on March 5th, 2012.

Here you will find the former residence of Cary Grant, one of Hollywood's most famous stars of yesteryear.

Among other notable roles, Grant is perhaps best known as the leading man in films such as An Affair to Remember and North By Northwest .

Fun fact: his birth name was Archibald Alexander Leach.

When Paramount put him under contract, he was going to change his name to Cary Lockwood - but executives thought it sounded too long and settled on Grant.

Although it's not a particularly large or glitzy house, its proximity to the Bel-Air Country Club makes this a very desirable property.

Keep driving down Bellagio Road until you reach Carcassonne Road. Turn right and keep driving north until you get to Chalon Road. Turn left and drive west to Sarbonne Road.

Turn right here and drive north very shortly until you find Stradella Road on the left.

25. Clint Eastwood (846 Stradella Road)

His recent work includes directorial work on films such as Sully and American Sniper .

Clint owns both this estate and the one next door, giving him plenty of space to work with.

This residence was designed by architect Paul McClean and completed in 2014. It has 7 bedrooms and 12 bathrooms. Its last sale price was $39,000,000.

From here, it is recommended to stay on Stradella Road until you reach Roscomare Road. Turn left and drive south until you see Chalon Road once again. Keep driving south and turn onto Bellagio Road.

26. Alfred Hitchcock (10957 Bellagio Road)

Director Alfred Hitchcock. Image Source: Wikimedia user Dr. Macro on March 29th, 2011.

On the other side of the Bel-Air Country Club, you'll find the former house of beloved director Alfred Hitchcock, who worked on over 50 features in the span of 6 decades.

In addition to directing classic horror films like Psycho and The Birds , Hitchcock was also well known for suspenseful projects like Vertigo and Rear Window .

He was considered the "master of suspense" but also a known practical joker.

Hitchcock also perfected the art of the cameo. He is featured in 39 of his films!

Hitchcock bought this home for $40,000 in 1942 and lived at this residence until his death in 1980. His wife, Alma, died in 1982.

This postcard from the 1920s reads: "Midway between Los Angeles and the sea. Open all year. Beverly Hills Hotel and Bungalows. Beverly Hills, California."

The tour begins at Will Rogers Park on Sunset Boulevard. Across the street is the Beverly Hills Hotel, the City's first business, there since 1912. Hotel founder Margaret Anderson donated this parkland and fountain as the first municipal park in Beverly Hills.

Beverly Hills Hotel under construction 1911

For more about the colorful, early history of Beverly Hills, watch the video below.

gloria-swanson

East of the hotel, were the long-gone mansions of silent screen legends Gloria Swanson, on Crescent, and Will Rogers, on Beverly Drive. She is best known for the movie Sunset Boulevard , and he was a hugely popular movie star, radio personality, political humorist, and the first honorary mayor of Beverly Hills. Rogers had a Polo field on his property and when the riders were done, they’d walk across the street to the hotel bar. When Rogers died, the hotel named that bar in his honor and the Polo Lounge was born.

To learn more about the first honorary mayor of Beverly Hills, watch the video below.

As you leave the park and cross Sunset, you’ll notice the pink bus stop built for the Dinky Train that brought visitors up to the hotel 100 years ago. The trolley is long gone, but the shelter is still in use. The green strip that divides Sunset was originally a bridle path for horseback riding when most houses had their own stables and you could ride into town for groceries.

The first mansions in Beverly Hills were built in Benedict Canyon by silent movie stars. Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks named their luxurious home Pickfair. Harold Lloyd’s massive estate was called Green Acres. Soon, Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Rudolph Valentino, and many other film greats had fabulous canyon homes.

Sammy Davis, Jr., Bruce Springsteen, Eddie Murphy, Danny Kaye, Jack Lemmon, Raquel Welsh, Kim Kardashian, and Ingrid Bergman.

Over the years, the lure of country living in the middle of the city attracted Tom Mix, Ingrid Bergman, Fred Astaire, Ann-Margret, Danny Kaye, Jack Lemmon, Raquel Welch, Sammy Davis, Jr., Barbara Eden, Eddie Murphy, Gene Simmons, Kim Kardashian, Bruce Springsteen, and many more. It was also the site of notorious activities at the homes of Jean Harlow, George Reeves, Sharon Tate, Heidi Fleiss, and Susan Berman.

After you make the left turn at Lexington Drive, you’ll walk past the home of Charo and her late husband Xavier Cugat. Next to them lived legendary RKO studio chief Pandro Berman.

Ball Arnaz 1000 North Roxbury Beverly Hills

This was the home of the most beloved red-headed resident of Beverly Hills. Not only did Lucy and Desi live here, and raise their kids (Lucie and Desi, Jr.) here, they also used their house in an episode of I Love Lucy . It’s the one where Lucy and Ethel sneak into actor Richard Widmark’s backyard to steal a grapefruit. It was actually Lucy and Desi’s backyard. Lucy was the first woman to head a TV production company, Desilu, which she formed with Arnaz, and I Love Lucy was the first show to film before a live studio audience. Desilu produced other popular TV shows including Mission: Impossible and Star Trek .

To find out how Lucy dealt with the tourists who visited her house, watch the video below.

Lucy and Desi’s next-door neighbors were radio and television stars Jack Benny and his wife, Mary Livingstone. Benny was known for his comic timing and his ability to elicit laughter with just a pregnant pause and stoic expression.

Jack Benny Home Beverly Hills

Benny’s trademark character stubbornly claimed to be 39-years-old despite being much older, and was the cheapest man in the world. In real life though, Benny was famous with neighborhood kids for giving away silver dollars on Halloween.

For a sweet treat, watch the video below to see how Beverly Hills celebrates Halloween.

Peter Falk Columbo Home Beverly Hills

Next door to the former home of Jack Benny and Mary Livingstone is the house once owned by actor Peter Falk who is best known for playing legendary TV detective Lt. Columbo. He was the first actor ever nominated for an Oscar and an Emmy in the same year. He achieved this feat twice, in 1961 and 1962. Falk, also a talented artist, had a studio above the garage and his work often sold for thousands of dollars. He and his wife, actress Shera Danese, were together for 33 years until Falk’s death on June 23, 2011.

1019 North Roxbury Clooney Gershwin

Brothers George and Ira Gershwin lived in the Spanish Colonial Revival house at 1019 Roxbury where they wrote such immortal songs as They Can’t Take That Away From Me , Shall We Dance , and Our Love Is Here To Stay . When George died, Ira moved next door to 1021. In 1953, actor José Ferrer and his wife, singer Rosemary Clooney, brought 1019 and her nephew, actor George Clooney, lived there for a time.

1023-roxbury-agnes-moorehead-spencer-tracy

Actress Agnes Moorehead lived at 1023 Roxbury and thrilled kids on Halloween by dressing as her Bewitched character, Endora. Built in 1926, it was also once home to Spencer Tracy. The 11,700-square-foot house had vaulted ceilings, a billiards room, lighted tennis court, and swimming pool.

Unfortunately, all these homes have been demolished and replaced, as has the corner house at 1014, former home of singer and congressman Sonny Bono, then real estate mogul Kirk Kirkorian, and most recently, Jennifer Lopez. If you venture all the way to the corner, the house across the street at 1006 Hartford Way is the former residence of Oscar-winning movie villain Jack Palance.

Harry James Betty Grable

Commissioned in 1926 by Columbia Pictures founder Harry Cohn, and designed by Wallace Neff, architect of Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford’s estate, Pickfair, this house embodies the best of Spanish Colonial style. When Cohn moved out, the most popular female star of WWII, Betty Grable, moved in with her husband, bandleader Harry James.

Diane Keaton Madonna

It was later owned and renovated by actress Diane Keaton who sold the 7-bedroom, 8-bath property to Madonna for $6.5 million. David and Victoria Beckham later lived here. With its luxurious pool and two guesthouses, it could sell today for $12 million.

jimmy-stewart-house-beverly-hills

The home of Jimmy Stewart and his wife once stood at the southeast corner of Roxbury and Lexington. They were often seen riding their bikes or walking their dogs in the neighborhood. Their house was demolished and replaced with the edifice that sits there now. Stewart had two lots, one for his house, and the other for his vegetable garden. When a neighbor complimented him on his beautiful produce and asked if she could hire his gardener, Stewart replied, “Nope. You can’t afford her. The gardener is Gloria, my wife.”

Ricky Schroder

For many years, child star Ricky Schroder was Jimmy Stewart’s neighbor across the street at 921 Roxbury. Decades earlier, actress and scientist Hedy Lamarr lived at 919 Roxbury. She co-invented the spread-spectrum techniques that led to WiFi and Bluetooth technology. Near the corner of Sunset is 906 Roxbury, a down-to-earth cottage that singer, dancer, and Oscar-winning actress Ginger Rogers once called home. Ginger rarely drank alcohol, so she installed a fully stocked ice cream soda fountain in her home instead of a bar.

• TURN LEFT TO RETURN TO WILL ROGERS PARK

• turn right to continue the tour.

You’re now approaching Sunset and Roxbury, the turning point in the tour. Those who are a little tired or need to use the bathroom should TURN LEFT and head back to Will Rogers Park. The rest should make a RIGHT TURN and then cross at the corner of Whittier and Sunset to enjoy the second leg of the tour. It takes approximately 20 minutes and includes some of the darker chapters in Beverly Hills history.

Dead Man's Curve Beverly Hills

This dangerously sharp turn on Sunset Boulevard is immortalized in the 1963 Jan & Dean hit song Dead Man’s Curve . In the old days, if you were going too fast, you’d end up in a pile of twisted metal. As the song’s lyrics say:

"He passed me at Doheny, then I started to swerve, but I pulled her out and there we were at Dead Man's Curve. I still can hear 'em say, ‘You won't come back from Dead Man's Curve.’"

Ronni Chasen murder crime scene

This intersection was also the scene of the senseless drive-by murder of power-publicist Ronni Chasen in 2010. As the tour continues, you’ll see that’s only one of the tragic events in the City’s past.

Bugsy Siegel murder house

Gangster and Las Vegas developer Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel was murdered here in the home of his girlfriend, Virginia Hill, on June 20, 1947. The killer snuck up the driveway next door and blasted Siegel through the living room window while he read the newspaper. The Beverly Hills police chief said he solved the case, but accused the Las Vegas Police of sheltering the mob-connected killer. Years later, a deathbed confession claimed the murder was committed to protect an adulterous lover who Siegel had vowed to kill. It is the stuff of gangster legend, never to be solved.

Howard Hughes inspects plane

This was the scene of the biggest disaster in Beverly Hills history. On July 7, 1947, the experimental plane Howard Hughes was piloting had engine trouble. Hughes tried to land on the nearby golf course, but missed it by two blocks and instead destroyed three houses in a fiery crash. It attracted 50,000 onlookers who gridlocked the City causing almost as big a disaster as the crash itself. William Durkin, a soldier on his way to a date, saved Hughes from the burning wreckage. Durkin and Hughes became friends, but Durkin always refused a reward saying, “You shouldn’t get paid off for doing what was right.”

For more about the crash that inspired Martin Scorsese’s movie The Aviator starring Leonardo DiCaprio, watch the video below.

Lana Turner’s home where Johnny Stampanto was murdered

On April 4, 1958, Lana Turner and her lover, gangster Johnny Stompanato, were quarreling when a knife was suddenly thrust into Johnny’s stomach, killing him. Did Lana do it in a fit of passion? Or did her daughter, Cheryl Crane, stab Stompanato defending her mother? Cheryl took the rap and spent time in juvenile hall, but a jury deemed the killing justifiable homicide and exonerated her. She went to work as the hostess for a local Hawaiian restaurant, The Luau, owned coincidentally by her father, actor Stephen Crane.

You’re now headed toward legendary Rodeo Drive and the final leg of the tour. Although Rodeo once had an equestrian bridle path running down the middle, it’s name has nothing to do with horses. Spanish explorers called the region El Rodeo De Las Aguas (which means “gathering of the waters”) because several streams ran down from the canyons above and emptied into the area.

The home Gene Kelly bought with his first wife, Betsy Blair, became the weekend clubhouse for the MGM family of actors. Kelly, famous for his athletic ability and notorious competitiveness, would invite his friends over for touch football, volleyball, and charades. Evenings would conclude with sing-alongs at the piano attended by the likes of Judy Garland and Hoagy Carmichael. A tragic Christmas tree fire in 1983 destroyed the house and everything in it. She lived in this house with her husband, Tarzan actor and Olympian Johnny Weissmuller. Previously, she lived next door with actor Gary Cooper. When Cooper broke off their tempestuous relationship, it’s said Vélez followed him to the train station and fired a pistol at him. This Craftsman-style house was designed and built in 1914 for the first City Recorder, Judge Edwin Locke. In the late 1920s, it was home and office to Joseph P. Kennedy, father of future president John F. Kennedy. While in Hollywood, the senior Kennedy made some 80 films and had an affair with his business partner, actress Gloria Swanson. The home’s second owner, Edwin Blum, was a well-known screenwriter who wrote Stalag 17 with Billy Wilder. Blum was also a speechwriter for prominent Democrats. His family still lives here. This is Local Landmark No. 11 on the Beverly Hills Register of Historical Properties.

Rodeo Drive Beverly Hills

French singer and actor Maurice Chevalier, and later Hollywood legend Fred Astaire, lived in the house at 806 Rodeo before Tarzan creator Edgar Rice Burroughs purchased it. The house to the south, at 804 Rodeo, was once owned by child star Jackie Cooper. Across the street, 807 Rodeo was the residence of Barbara Stanwyck and Robert Taylor. Later, song-and-dance man George Murphy moved in before becoming the first actor elected to the U.S. Senate in 1964.

If you'd like to extend your walk, instead of returning to Will Rogers Park to the north, continue south on Rodeo and visit the commercial district between Santa Monica Boulevard and Wilshire, home to some of the most elegant stores and luxury brands in the world. Do movies stars shop there? Yes. But they come in the back and go upstairs. A guided tour of the area is available elsewhere on this website.

California dreaming: Beverly Hills

Beverly Hills California USA

Dopo averla vista posso lasciare soddisfatta LA.
