Malcesine: Lake Garda Tourist Guide

Discover this picturesque Lake Garda resort: a pretty little medieval town with a harbour and castle

tourist bus malcesine 2023

About Malcesine

Malcesine is a small town on the eastern shore of Lake Garda in northern Italy. It’s a picturesque tourist resort with cobbled lanes and a castle, crammed between the blue lake waters and the massive mountain ridge behind, Monte Baldo. In the summer months Malcesine is a hive of innocent hedonism, packed with pottering holidaymakers gorging on ice cream and sunseekers draped along the lake shore. It’s not all laziness, however, as the town’s ferry connections to other lakeside resorts make it a good base for sightseeing and the cable-car running up to Monte Baldo is a magnet for cyclists, walkers and paragliders.

Lake Garda is the largest lake in Italy, and Malcesine lies towards the narrow and mountainous northern end, often compared to a fiord. The town is situated at the edge of the Veneto region, in the province of Verona. ‘Malcesine’ is a good exercise in Italian pronunciation: the name is pronounced approximately MalCHESinay .

Find and book hotels . With location maps and guest reviews

Visiting Malcesine

There are four principal tourist activities for visitors to Malcesine: wander the town’s lanes; catch the boat to Riva, Limone or other lake resorts; take the cable-car up to the heights of Monte Baldo; eat ice creams. The town is a lovely place to stroll for an hour or so, with picturesque medieval lanes winding up the slope from the lake. There are pretty little squares, cafes and restaurants, gelaterie and shops selling handbags, shoes, limoncello and clothes. The main harbour is typical of Lake Garda: small, attractive, filled with boats and lined with cafes. A short distance away is the old port, the Porto Vecchio , a quieter spot with good lake views, curious sculptures and more restaurants.

tourist bus malcesine 2023

Malcesine’s most striking feature as you approach over Lake Garda is its historic castle, the Castello Scaligero , which is also the town’s main tourist attraction. The building takes its name from the della Scala family, who owned it and made alterations in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries; the castle was being used, restored and adapted for military purposes up until the nineteenth century. Nowadays as well as being a tourist sight, the castle is also a wedding venue. The battlemented fortress is open to the public as a museum, called the Museo Castello Scaligero. It takes a surprising amount of time to explore thoroughly, as it houses three small museums as well as temporary exhibitions. The smartest of these is a natural history museum with well-designed displays which should interest both adults and children (labelling is in Italian, English and German). There is also a room dedicated to the German writer Goethe, who visited Malcesine in 1786 and was suspected of spying when he sketched the castle, and an old-fashioned exhibition of local bits and pieces: boats, history and so on. There are great views from the ramparts and the chance to climb up the tower and gaze down at Malcesine’s huddled rooftops. The castle is open every day with conveniently long opening hours (apart from winter months when it closes at 4pm). There’s an entrance charge, with reductions for over-65s and children.

tourist bus malcesine 2023

The second most important building in Malcesine is the fifteenth-century Palazzo dei Capitani , close to the harbour. This was the headquarters of the Venetian rulers of the area, the Capitani del Lago . It’s grander than the town’s other modest historical buildings, and although at the time of writing the building is closed for restoration, you can still wander through the entrance hallway and out to a very pretty lakeside garden. A lion of St. Mark painted on the wall is a fading reminder of the area’s Venetian overlords.

To the south of town a pleasant lakeside promenade meanders past hotels, cafes and potential bathing spots to a little headland which boasts a couple of ‘beach’ establishments without real beach but with neat waterside lawns where you can hire a sunbed and parasol and relax with splendid lake views. There are plenty more bathing opportunities on the other side of town, where tiny pebbly beaches fill up with swimmers and sunbathers in the summer.

The main road around Lake Garda can make strolling along an unpleasant ordeal; however in Malcesine this isn’t a problem as there is a path for cyclists and pedestrians running between the road and lake for some distance in either direction. If the sun isn’t too hot, explorers can continue to the south past the picturesque ‘sunbathing headland’ as far as Cassone, a pretty little village which claims to have the world’s shortest river. It also has a pretty, tiny harbour and a waterfront cafe-restaurant. The walk between Malcesine and Cassone, which takes around an hour, passes through the romantically-named Val di Sogno (Valley of Dreams), a scattered collection of villas and hotels, with a watersports station and plenty of peace for sunbathers. Look out for the grand villa on the green headland with gardens you can glimpse and even a little private cablecar. The walk passes two of Lake Garda’s five islands: Isola dell’Olivo and Isola del Sogno.

Malcesine has a tourist information office close to the harbour, where you can pick up information, timetables and maps of the town and of the other lake resorts in the province. There is another seasonal office offering hotel information on the main street by the bus stop.

Food and drink

At any given moment, the majority of tourists in Malcesine seem to be seated and consuming food or drink. The little port is lined with cafes offering a wide range of hot or alcoholic drinks, freshly-squeezed fruit juice ( spremuta ) and tempting ice-cream concoctions. These are lovely afternoon places to relax and while away an hour. For more atmospheric evening drinks, stroll up the winding lanes to the town’s three sociable squares, Piazza Turazza, Piazza Cavour and Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, each of which is tiny but contains a choice of places to sit, eat and drink. A few of the bars and restaurants in town put on cheesy live music in the tourist season, but others have a classier feel and in true Italian fashion you can relax and watch the evening promenade, the passeggiata , while sipping a glass of good wine.

tourist bus malcesine 2023

The town is full of restaurants, most offering fairly typical tourist menus in Italian, German and English. The fare is standard: scan several menus if you want to find something more interesting. An enoteca offering inventive dishes of lake fish may not have a view or a lakeside terrace but could be a more interesting dinner destination. Eating out in Malcesine doesn’t have to be expensive: there is typically a cover charge of a couple of euros, but dishes are reasonably priced – for example, €8 for a primo piatto pasta dish. In Italy there is no need to eat the traditional five course-meal – you can pick whatever suits your appetite and budget. House wine, by the quarter-, half- or full litre is quite cheap (generally more so than beer). There are quite a small shops selling pizza slices and similar snacks; not all are open late, however. If you want to prepare your own food, you’ll find a couple of supermarkets on the main street above the old town.

Cableway to Monte Baldo

tourist bus malcesine 2023

A cableway runs from Malcesine up to the high mountain ridge behind the town, Monte Baldo, climbing from 100m to 1760m. This is a great excursion, particularly on a hot day, as temperatures are lower and the breeze cooler than by the lake far below. In winter this is a base for mountain sports. Once the snows have melted, energetic walkers and mountain bikers equipped with maps will find challenging routes to enjoy, while the less athletic can stroll along easy paths. To the left (north) as you exit the cable-car station a panoramic path leads along the flower-strewn ridge to a lovely viewpoint about twenty minutes’ easy walk away. In the other direction the footpath 651 is comfortable to follow for an hour to the south, with good views, attractive terrain and a choice of alternative paths. Those who don’t fancy the exercise can still enjoy themselves at the cable-car station, where there is a terrace, a bar and a good-value self-service restaurant. Close by is another cafe-restaurant, while a third, with an alpine ambience plus sun loungers and a childrens’ climbing frame, lies a short walk to the north on the way to the viewpoint.

The cable-cars get busy so you should be prepared for queues. 45-person capacity cars run up to a half-way station called San Michele. There’s a restaurant here, road access (with a car park), and walks up or down the slopes. The cars which continue the journey up to Monte Baldo take 70 people and perform a slow rotation so all can enjoy the views over Lake Garda and up to the mountain. Cyclists should check the latest timetables as bicycles can only be transported at certain times.

Malcesine transport

Malcesine is on the main lakeside road, the Via Gardesana, which runs along the shores of the lake. Buses connect the lake resorts, including the 62/64 services run by ATV which travel all the way to Verona. To connect with Italy’s railway network, you can catch this bus, which stops outside the railway stations in Peschiera del Garda and in Verona (Verona Porta Nuova Station). The journey to Verona takes an hour and three-quarters, and buses run approximately every half-hour (see our links panel for the ATV website with timetables; look under orari / extraurbani ). Malcesine has a bus station ( autostazione ) which is really a lay-by on the main road uphill from the historic centre. Tickets can be bought at the bar alongside, and there is also a seasonal hotel information office here, where staff can provide directions to your hotel. The waterfront and heart of town are just two minutes’ walk downhill.

tourist bus malcesine 2023

Malcesine is one of the principal stops for the ferries which run up and down Lake Garda, but note that services are reduced in winter months. The other northern lake resorts – Limone, Riva del Garda and Torbole – are easy and relatively quick to reach, and you can buy a day ticket for this part of the lake. It takes a lot longer to travel down to the southern end of the lake – two hours to Desenzano on an expensive fast hydrofoil, and twice that on the normal slow boat. The services around the lake are run by Navigazione Lago di Garda, and there is a ticket kiosk alongside the jetty by Malcesine harbour. Other private companies run ferry services back and forth between Malcesine and Limone, on the far shore; they have advertising boards by the harbour.

The most convenient airports for Malcesine are Verona Villafranca Airport, and Brescia Airport. You can reach Malcesine by public transport from either airport, although Verona is rather easier. From Verona Airport, take a bus into Verona, then change to the ATV 62/64 bus service to Riva del Garda, stopping in Malcesine. From Brescia Airport you would need to take one of the two airport shuttle buses: either into Brescia (you would then need to take a bus or train to another lake resort such as Desenzano, then change to a bus or ferry for Malcesine) or to Verona (for the 62/64 service).

Much of Malcesine’s holiday accommodation is strung along the lakeshore outside the heart of the town, and there is a useful ‘Tourist Bus’ service which runs along connecting the various little settlements which make up Malcesine. The service is seasonal, runs in the mornings and evenings, and costs €1 per trip at the time of writing. Up-to-date times and prices should be available in your hotel and the tourist information office.

The other lake resorts and Monte Baldo are the most obvious day trip destinations from Malcesine. Buses and ferries as described above are useful ways to travel around the lake. Verona makes a good day trip, and some ambitious tourists may wish to travel as far as Venice. To reach Venice you can either take the special seasonal bus run by ATV for daytrippers which leaves early in the morning and runs straight to Venice, or catch the regular ATV bus to Peschiera or Verona, from which stations there are direct trains to Venice. It’s a long journey, though, and the two towns are more comfortably combined in a two-centre holiday. Padua and Vicenza both lie on the railway line between Verona and Venice, and these also make good stops on a touring holiday.

Malcesine accommodation

tourist bus malcesine 2023

The historic centre of Malcesine is compact and made up of narrow lanes and old buildings. Consequently many hotels are located in more spacious surroundings outside the centre. When you are choosing a hotel, check its location and read past guests’ comments. Some pleasant lakeside hotels are lovely for lounging on lawns, admiring views and swimming, but are quite a long walk from restaurants and ferries. Conversely, a town centre hotel will be convenient and lively but may also be noisier and more cramped. Generally speaking, half-board in Italy is best avoided. You are likely to be restricted for menu choice and mealtimes, and you’ll miss the pleasures of trying out affordable local restaurants.

Lake Garda Travel

BUS SERVICE around Lake Garda

The bus is a very convenient way to reach Lake Garda, especially if you are heading to the Upper Lake Garda : in fact, trains only serve the southern area, where there are the stations of Desenzano and Peschiera .

The bus routes run along the two coasts , west and east, or connect the lake to the four nearby provincial capitals: Brescia (west), Verona (east), Mantua (south), and Trento (north).

Below you can find the main bus routes to Lake Garda operated by the public transport service.

Get to Lake Garda by bus

Verona to lake garda bus.

Verona is located in the south-east of the lake, so from here you can reach the eastern or southern coast:

  • with ATV Lines 162 , 163 , 164 , and 165 you can go from Verona (Piazza Brà) to Garda town , passing through Castelnuovo, Peschiera del Garda , Lazise , and Bardolino . If you’re heading to Gardaland , take the Line 164 !
  • with Line 26 you can go by bus from Verona to Desenzano and Brescia bus station (via Solferino) in about 2 hours and 20 minutes.

Brescia to Lake Garda bus

Lake Garda’s bus service also connect Brescia, to the west of the lake, to the western coast, up to Trentino:

  • Line S202 will take you from Brescia to Riva del Garda , the northernmost point of the lake. This route runs along the western coast and takes about two hours, passing through Gavardo, Salò, Gardone and Toscolano.
  • As we said, Line 26 will take you to Verona , passing through Desenzano, Sirmione and Castelnuovo.

Trento to Lake Garda bus

If you are in Trento , bus service is certainly the most convenient solution to reach Lake Garda .

First you have to reach Rovereto , both by bus and by train. From Rovereto you can take the bus line 332 in the direction of Riva del Garda , the northernmost point of the lake. The bus passes through Mori and Torbole, then arrives in Riva and continues towards Arco.

Mantua to Lake Garda bus

The main route from Mantua to Lake Garda is the one served by Line 46 , that goes from Mantua to Peschiera del Garda and takes about 1 hour and 40 minutes, passing through Valeggio sul Mincio.

Local bus service

Bus service on the western coast.

There are two main lines that run along Lake Garda’s western coast:

  • As we said, part of Line S202 goes from Salò to Riva del Garda.
  • Another Line covers the entire coast, from Desenzano to Riva del Garda : it’s Line 27 (LN027) , that passes through Padenghe, Moniga, Manerba, Salò, Toscolano, and Limone, and takes about 2 hours.

Bus service on the eastern coast

Also in this case, there are two main options to climb up the veronese coast:

  • as we said, Lines 162, 163, 164, and 185 will take you from Verona to Lake Garda by bus, but they all stop in the city of Garda .
  • If you want to go further north, you can take a bus of the Line 484 , that goes from Garda to Riva passing through Torri del Benaco, Brenzone, Malcesine, and Torbole. The whole trip takes about one hour.

Where to buy bus tickets on Lake Garda

In Italy you can normally buy bus tickets at the bus station , at the ticket office, but also in tobacco shops and kiosks . Alternatively you can also buy them on board , but usually the price is higher in this case.

  • History and key facts

Malcesine can be tricky to say, and the first thing you need to know when you’re going somewhere is how to say it.

Pronunciation: mal-cheh-suh-nay

Malcesine is situated on the northeastern shores of Lake Garda. Whilst Lake Garda is split across three regions, Malcesine is located in the region of Veneto.

Getting To Malcesine

[jump to Things To Do In Malcesine]

Cobbled street in Malcesine, Lake Garda

Getting to Malcesine might seem like a tricky task, but it’s fairly straightforward. You’ve got three main options;

  • Taxi or private transfer
  • Public transport

The best option mainly depends on where you are flying in from, as travel times and the cost of travel greatly vary.

You can get a taxi or private transfer directly to Malcesine from Verona Airport . Verona Airport is the closest airport to Lake Garda and Malcesine, and it’s close enough for you to get a taxi or private transfer at a reasonable price.

If you want to save a bit of money then you can use public transport to get to Malcesine, but it does take slightly longer.

From Verona Airport, which is the nearest airport to Lake Garda , you can get a train directly from the airport to Peschiera del Garda.

From here, you can take the 164 bus to Garda, then the 484 bus to Malcesine. You can also get the ferry from Peschiera del Garda to Malcesine. This is a great way to see the lake but it does take around 2 hours so keep that in mind if you have had a long journey and just want to get to your hotel.

Discover more: Check the latest bus timetables and ferry timetables before you plan your journey.

If you are flying into other airports, such as Milan Malpensa or Bergamo Airport, you can still get a train from the above, via Milan Centrale Train Station, to Peschiera del Garda.

Hiring a car is one of the most popular ways people reach Lake Garda , especially when flying into airports that are further away (such as Bergamo or Malpensa).

Not only can it work out cost-effective compared to private transfers, but it also means you have a hire car for the duration of your holiday which you can use to explore Lake Garda and the surrounding areas.

  • Visit a beach in Malcesine
  • Explore Lake Garda by boat

Monte Baldo Cable Car Lake Garda

Monte Baldo is part of the Italian Alps , and it shadows Malcesine from the east. The summit offers spectacular views of Lake Garda, plenty of walking trails, and cafes and restaurants complete with a view.

View of Malcesine and Lake Garda from Malcesine Castle

The Malcesine Castle is an iconic landmark that sits alongside the shores of Lake Garda. The castle that stands today dates all the way back to the 13th century.

You can purchase a ticket to go into the castle (adult tickets are as low as €6). We would fully recommend going itno the castle to learn about some local history, as well as taking in the sights of Malcesine and Lake Garda once you have climbed up to the top viewing point.

Bottle of Peroni overlooking Malcesine Harbour

You won’t be surprised to find out that Malcesine is home to some fantastic bars and restaurants that offer authentic Italian dishes.

Here are some of our favourite restaurants:

  • Ristorante Italia da Nikolas – sitting right on the harbour in Malcesine, you can watch the world go by and enjoy some lovely food and drink
  • La Bottega del Vino – almost hidden away and quite easy to miss, this is a real authentic family restaurant (make sure you try the baked Gnocchi!).
  • Ristorante Pizzeria Garden – fantastic food and an even better outside seating area right on the edge of Lake Garda.

4. Visit a beach in Malcesine

Believe it or not, there are plenty of beaches around Lake Garda, and there are a few in Malcesine too.

Postertnia beach is a small but charming beach located directly underneath Malcesine Castle.

It’s not a sandy beach and the rocks around it are quite rough – so don’t expect to be sunbathing – but it’s worth exploring and it makes for a great photo!

Paina beach is located just north of the castle and is roughly a 5-7 minute walk from the center of Malcesine.

Exploring Lake Garda by boat is a fantastic way to take in the breathtaking views the lake has to offer, and it’s a great way to visit the other towns alongside Lake Garda too.

There’s a regular ferry from Malcesine that goes north to Riva del Garda, across to Limone, or south towards the rest of the lake.

There are numerous boat trips available from Malcesine that will take you to various towns and sights on Lake Garda. You can buy tickets for these at Malcesine harbour.

Verona City Centre

Whilst there’s lots to do and see in Malcesine and Lake Garda itself, we would recommend visiting Verona if you are staying for more than 5 days.

The drive from Malcesine to Verona only takes between 1 hour 15 minutes – 1 hour 30 minutes, and there are quite a lot of affordable parking options in Verona city center.

If you don’t have access to a car, then you can get the train to Verona from Peschiera del Garda. The train from Peschiera del Garda to Verona Porta Nuova station only takes between 14 – 19 minutes and can cost as little as £3.22, depending on what train you get.

You can get a bus from Malcesine that goes to Peschiera del Garda. We’d recommend checking the latest bus timetables & routes before you plan this journey.

Central location in Malcesine with a five-star rating on Tripadvisor.

3. Hotel Alpino

Hotel Alpino is situated in front of the main car park in Malcesine. The hotel is a little basic compared to others, but it’s very reasonable for a central hotel.

5. Hotel Vacanze 2000

6. Ambienthotel Primaluna

Located north of Malcesine Castle and just above Paina Beach, the Ambienthotel Primaluna is a luxury hotel with fantastic views of the castle and Lake Garda.

7. Hotel Castello Lake Front

Malcesine Castle From Lake Garda

Malcesine, and more specifically Malcesine Castle , is an extremely popular place for people to get married.

You can either hire out a room in the castle, or a terrace on the castle that looks over Malcesine and Lake Garda. Many people then hire a private boat to host a drinks reception as you sail around Lake Garda, and then enjoy a meal with guests at one of the many restaurants in Malcesine.

The summer months are the best time to visit if you are aiming for the best weather. If you want to avoid the crowds but still have pleasant weather, we would recommend visiting Lake Garda and Malcesine in April, September , or October .

BEST THINGS TO DO IN MALCESINE, LAKE GARDA, ITALY IN 2023

During my trip to Lake Garda , the largest lake in Italy, I visited Malcesine and have listed the top things to do in Malcesine: the picturesque medieval atmosphere of the old town, the pretty panorama of the lake and the mountains from the harbor, the most beautiful view of Lake Garda from Scaliger Castle, and much more.

Table of Contents

This beautiful town, located on the northeastern shore of Lake Garda, is a great base to visit other highlights of Lake Garda, such as Limone sul Garda and Riva del Garda.  In this post, you will learn some facts, what to do in Malcesine, and more useful tips for your trip to Malcesine and Lake Garda in general.

MALCESINE TRAVEL TIPS

Get ready for your trip to Malcesine with this useful information.

MALCESINE INFO

  • The town of Malcesine (pronounced  mal-che-see-nay , with the accent on “ che” ) is located in the northern part of Lake Garda , on the eastern shore, south of Riva del Garda and opposite Limone sul Garda.
  • It forms part of the province of Verona, in the region of Veneto: Verona is approximately 40 km to the South-East, and Venice is approximately 120 km to the South-East. The city of Trento is also quite close, approximately 65 km to the North.
  • This small  comune  of approximately 3500 inhabitants is nestled between Lake Garda and the slopes of Mount Baldo: the iconic Scaliger Castle overlooks the lake from the top of a hill.

HOW TO GET TO MALCESINE

PLANE:  The closest airport to Malcesine is in Verona; however, take a look also at Milano Bergamo Airport, Venice Airport, and Treviso Airport, which are bases for low-cost airlines in Europe such as Ryanair and Wizzair. Slightly farther away are Milano Malpensa Airport and Bologna Airport. From there, you can rent a car or take public transportation.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT:  Unfortunately there is no train station in Malcesine; the closest stations in large cities are Verona to the South and Rovereto to the North. Buses run along the coasts of Lake Garda; bus connections can take a while to travel in this area. During July and August, there may be extra connections between Riva del Garda and Venice or between Verona and the Lake towns to bring Opera-goers back to their accommodations. During the rest of the year, some connections may be canceled. The main public transportation company is called ATV Verona.

CAR:  The scenery of Lake Garda and the surrounding hills and mountains is beautiful from the road to Malcesine. However, it is a local road that crosses many towns and holiday destinations, so there could be traffic.

BOAT:  There are ferries connecting Malcesine to towns all around Lake Garda. The ferries leave from Peschiera or Desenzano to the South, or from Riva to the North. Many ferries are managed by this company .

HOW TO GET A ROUND MALCESINE

  • Malcesine is a very walkable town : wear comfortable shoes and enjoy the picturesque cobble-stoned streets.
  • You can easily explore the whole city center. The Scaliger Castle is located on top of a hill, but it’s not hard to reach.
  • You don’t need a car to get around Malcesine , plus there aren’t many parking lots. If you travel by car, or you want to use it for day trips, make sure you check with your accommodation if they have space for it.
  • There is a tourist bus during the summer , but the schedule may change, so be sure to check it.

BEST TIME TO VISIT MALCESINE

Lake Garda is a very popular summer destination. Even though Lake Garda might not be that popular with US-Americans, it is extremely popular with European – especially German – visitors. Malcesine and the nearby towns can get very, very crowded in July and August, which are also the hottest months. Prices for accommodations rise and it can become pretty expensive.

I recommend visiting Malcesine in April or May, or in late September and early October . In these periods the weather can be nice, destinations are less busy (but there is still a lot going on and it can be partly crowded), and accommodation prices are a little lower. It is much more pleasant to visit the best attractions of Malcesine in these conditions.

During the rest of the year, many tourism establishments may be closed.

WHERE TO STAY IN MALCESINE

Even though I didn’t stay overnight in Malcesine, here are a few accommodation possibilities. Note that many hotels state an “adults only” policy which may come in handy for those looking for a children-free stay.

LUXURY:  Guesthouse Grand View is perfect if you are looking to enjoy the beautiful views of Lake Garda and the mountains while swimming in the outdoor pool. It is located on the slopes of Monte Baldo close to the center of Malcesine. Check out rates here.

MID-RANGE:  Enjoy the old town from Hotel Malcesine, located in the heart of the city center, close to the harbor. The terrace with sun chairs overlooking Lake Garda is a beautiful place to relax. Check out rates here.

If you plan to stay in another village around Lake Garda, check out my accommodation guide with tips on the best accommodation around Lake Garda .

MALCESINE – RANDOM INFORMATION

  • In Italian restaurants, leaving a tip is not required, but appreciated.
  • At restaurants where you sit at a table, the bill will include a “coperto” . It is a fee between 1-3 EUR per person that covers the cost of the tablecloth, cutlery, bread, and sometimes a jar of tap water.
  • Take good care of your feet by wearing comfortable shoes.
  • Be prepared for mosquitos in the summer months (seriously).

Top Things to Do  in Malcesine

Without further ado, here are the top things to do in Malcesine.

Explore the Old Town

The first thing to see in Malcesine is the medieval old town . Walking in the center of Malcesine, between the lake and the main road, is very pleasant and relaxing.

Image

The narrow alleys have a very special atmosphere made of colorful buildings, cute shops, and cafés, with pretty squares suddenly opening up to the sun, some bordered by orange trees and palms. As Malcesine is between the lake and the slopes of Mount Baldo, most streets are uphill.

Image

Malcesine’s history dates back to Roman times. Afterwards, this area was dominated by Goths and Lombards, by the Scaligeri family of Verona, by Venetians, and Austrians, before finally becoming part of the Kingdom of Italy in 1866. The old town retained its medieval structure around the fortress of Scaliger Castle.

  • Italian tip: if you are looking to enjoy some local wine , look for the Italian words “osteria”, “vineria” or “enoteca”.

Walk by the Harbor

When considering what to do in Malcesine, the answer is as easy as walking along the harbor.

The small harbor is another beautiful place in Malcesine, bustling with travelers and locals, ferries, and fishing boats. It is perfect to relax and do some people-watching.

Image

In the courtyard of Palazzo del Capitano , one of the top attractions of Malcesine, you can sit on a bench with a  gelato  while you enjoy the wonderful view of the Lake and the mountains.

Visit Scaliger Castle

The Scaliger Castle of Malcesine  is a must-visit in Malcesine: You will learn a bit about Malcesine´s history and it offers the best view at Lake Garda. The rooftops of red shingles below, the Lake in front of you, mountains all around: it was my favorite view!

Image

Also known as the Malcesine Castle ( Castello di Malcesine  in Italian) , this medieval castle sits on a promontory overlooking Lake Garda . Even though the first castle here was built around the year 500, it takes the name of the family that ruled in Verona, Della Scala, who took over in 1277 and rebuilt it. It was declared National Monument in 1902.

If you have only one day in Malcesine, make sure you visit the castle to experience the view and learn about the local culture.

Image

The Scaliger Castle houses the small Museum of Natural History about the flora and fauna of Lake Garda and Mount Baldo, as well as an exhibition of drawings made by Goethe; another museum of local history is being created.

From the various courtyards and balconies on different floors, you can enjoy wonderful views. Make sure you climb the tower and admire the picturesque view 70 meters above Lake Garda.

Image

The Scaliger Castle is also a very romantic venue: the Rivellino courtyard is used to celebrate weddings.

  • Price: the ticket to Scaliger Castle in Malcesine costs 6 EUR.
  • Opening hours: Scaliger Castle is open every day, but hours change seasonally and on weekends, so make sure you check online.
  • Top tip: enjoy a wonderful view of Scaliger Castle rising above Malcesine and Lake Garda from the ferry to/from Limone, the town on the other side of the lake.

Visit Captain’s Palace

You will certainly notice this beautiful palace near the harbor: it is one of the key historical attractions in Malcesine.

This historic building was constructed by the Scaliger family over Roman and Romanesque ruins in the 1200s and 1300s; it was later remodeled in Venetian style in the following centuries, with sumptuous decorations worthy of the residence of the Captain of the Lake.

The most recent renovation started in 2007 and gave the palace back its original splendor.

You can walk through the main hall, admire the frescoes on the ceiling , and enjoy the wonderful view of the lake and the garden through the back gate. It is a very Instagrammable spot in Malcesine, especially when the flowers are blooming.

  • Price: admission is free. Only the ground floor and the garden are open to the public.
  • Events: the first floor is used for concerts, conferences, or wedding ceremonies.

Admire the View From Mount Baldo

Monte Baldo is certainly a top destination around Lake Garda, especially for day trips. It is popular to visit Malcesine just to reach the top of Monte Baldo and admire the view.

Image

I took the cable car to reach the top. The first station of “Funivia Malcesine-Monte Baldo” is close to the city center, approximately 10 minutes on foot from the harbor. In just a few minutes, it takes you up to 1800 meters of altitude.

After the mid-station, the rotating cabins make this experience even more unique! The view of Lake Garda and the surrounding mountains makes it worth traveling to Malcesine. I would say this is definitely a place to visit in Malcesine in one day.

Animal lovers should check out the cute “Elalpaca” alpaca farm on the top of Mount Baldo, near the cableway arrival.

Image

  • Price: A return ticket costs 25€ when purchased online, and 27€ when you buy tickets at the ticket center.
  • Opening hours: The cable car is open approximately from May to October, from 9 AM to 5 PM, depending on the year. Make sure you check it in advance .
  • Practical tip: Get there in advance in high season, as the queue could be long. Getting there early as possible is the best option, as well as buying the ticket online.
  • Clothing tip: On top of Monte Baldo, it can feel significantly colder than in Malcesine, so consider bringing a light jacket. Of course, check the weather before you head there, as clouds could block the view.

It is also possible to hike from Malcesine to Monte Baldo. The trail is 11 km long but the altitude difference is 1815 meters! I can recommend this very steep trail only to trained hikers. Even hiking downhill can hurt your knees.

Paragliding at Mount Baldo

Those of you looking for a thrill should definitely consider paragliding from Mount Baldo to Malcesine! Thanks to the thermals rising from Lake Garda (the flows of air going upwards), after taking off from the top of Monte Baldo, you can reach up to 3000 meters! The landing is all the way down in Malcesine, close to the lake. It looks very exciting.

Image

Many companies offer a tandem paragliding flight in Malcesine, where you sit on the paraglider together with an instructor. You just have to wear comfortable clothing, and they take care of the rest. Many packages also include pictures and a video of this amazing experience.

  • Top tip: paragliding is a very popular activity, so make sure you book in advance.

Hiking in Malcesine

There are plenty of hiking trails in Malcesine that lead up the slopes of Monte Baldo.

Some are easy and suitable also for families with children, such as the ring trail from Malcesine to San Michele (the mid-stop of the cablecar ride); others are quite challenging and more scenic, like the hike to the top of Mount Baldo and the treks on the peaks, where there are even WWI trenches.

Make sure you do your research, choose a trek suitable to your capabilities, and bring the necessary equipment.

Watersports in Malcesine

Another cool thing to do in Malcesine is spending time by the shore of Lake Garda!

The water sports that you can do in Malcesine are windsurfing and kitesurfing. Winds blow on Lake Garda all day long: the strong Pelér wind blows in the morning, and the lighter Ora wind blows in the afternoon. As long as you have basic swimming skills, you can book with the local providers and have some fun!

Image

There are also options for sailboats and for SUP (stand-up paddling).

If you’d rather relax, make sure you check out the beach north of the city center called Paina Beach, or the lovely Val di Sogno beach, approximately 30 minutes on foot south of Malcesine. Everywhere, the water is clear and very inviting for a swim.

It is also fun to rent a motorboat to enjoy the view of the mountains from the lake.

  • Price: Most are free, in some, you can rent a sun chair.
  • What to expect: the beaches are made of pebbles!
  • Food: There are restaurants and kiosks around the beach areas.
  • Italian tip: The Italian words for “beach” are  spiaggia  and  lido .

Discover the Markets of Malcesine

A traditional market takes place in Malcesine every Saturday morning , from 8 AM to 2 PM. You can find fresh produce, local food, and traditional crafts. This area is famous especially for olive oil and wine.

The atmosphere in the alleys and squares of the city center is super Italian. It’s the perfect place to find cute souvenirs.

  • Practical tip: because of the market, on Saturdays, it’s even harder to find a place to park your car.

Olive Growers Consortium of Malcesine

Foodies will enjoy visiting the Consortium of Olive Growers . Olives are a specialty in Malcesine: the shop of the Consortium is located in the center of Malcesine, while the Olive Mill is 30 minutes away on foot on Via Panoramica.

Locals are proud of producing an excellent extra-virgin olive oil thanks to the mild climate of Lake Garda, which is ideal for growing olives. Olive trees are able to grow easily in this stony and exposed soil. It is quite amazing, since just south of Lake Garda is the foggy plain Pianura Padana, and just north are snowy mountains.

The Consortium was founded in 1946, but olive trees have grown in the area since Roman times.  Olive oil is so precious that it is called “ yellow gold “. DAY TRIPS FROM MALCESINE

Malcesine is the perfect location to take day trips around Lake Garda and even beyond.

Limone sul Garda

My favorite day trip from Malcesine is Limone sul Garda, the town on the opposite shore of the lake . I loved the atmosphere in the cute alleys of Limone, the colorful flowers, and the view of Lake Garda. Furthermore, from the ferry, you can enjoy an extra special view of Malcesine Castle.

  • Check out my Limone pos t for more info on Lake Garda´s cutest village.

Image

Riva del Garda

It is also very easy to visit Riva del Garda from Malcesine. Riva del Garda is the town on the northern tip of Lake Garda. The beautiful city center features colorful houses, the impressive Torre Apponale stone tower, and an interesting Museum of Lake Garda concerning archaeology and history from Roman times until the WWII resistance. The mountains are very close, so the beach and the trails nearby are very scenic.

Image

The interesting cities nearby are Verona, with its pretty center, the Roman Arena, and the Romeo and Juliet balcony; Rovereto, home to the stunning Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art “MART”; and Trento, with a very authentic old town and the massive Buonconsiglio Castle.

  • Check out my Verona guide for more travel tips.

Image

Sirmione is probably the most famous town on the shores of Lake Garda. It is on the southern shores of the lake and it is a tourist hot spot – home to several historic sights and beautiful narrow streets in the old town.

  • Check out my guide for more tips on Sirmione.

FINAL WORDS ON THE BEST ATTRACTIONS IN MALCESINE

Without a doubt, Malcesine is one of the prettiest villages around Lake Garda. It is worth going there on a day trip, but it is also a perfect base for multiple days. I hope with my post you will be able to enjoy the top things to do in Malcesine.

What time does the touris bus run till, I have read somewhere that it runs till 8pm and somewhere else 1am! I wondered which is correct as I want to know if it can be used to get in and out of Malcesine in the evenings. I'm looking as staying in Hotel Astoria in June.

' class=

Not sure what you have in mind when tou say 'tourist bus'. The #62/64 bus is a regular service running throughout the year, serving all the communities along the E shore of the lake. And yes, there is no service after about 8 pm.
