With more than 200,000 square feet of exhibit space, the California State Railroad Museum is among the world's largest railway museums. Located in Old Sacramento, this museum is one of the premier attractions in the city.

One of the top places to visit in Sacramento is the California State Capitol building. This structure is an excellent example of Neoclassical architecture and was built in the 1860s. It underwent significant restoration in the 1970s, updating the Capitol to modern building code and preserving some of the most historic rooms.

Today, the California State Capitol is the center of state government and also operates as the California State Capitol Museum. The public is welcome to tour the historic halls throughout the week. A few of the preserved rooms in the museum include the governor's main office and the 1906 treasurer's office. Other historic attractions include portraits and various other artworks, as well as antiques.

The Capitol building itself is an eye-catching attraction. But the adjacent colorful gardens extending several blocks, comprising Capitol Park , make it the most beautiful among Capitol complexes in the United States. These months receive generous warm weather and long days, and avoid the extreme heat of the summer in California's Central Valley. These months, especially April and October, also offer more affordable times to travel.

These shoulder seasons also tend to stay dry in Sacramento. Rain moves into the forecast by the end of October, typically, and remains until March. Autumn strikes at some of the trees through October, but March into April is the most colorful time of year, as the city's many rose gardens spring to life.

Despite the heat, the summer is still one of the most popular times to visit Sacramento. Averages are in the low 90s Fahrenheit this time of year. Plan on enjoying outdoor activities in the morning or evening this time of year, and perhaps find refuge at one of Sacramento's many air-conditioned museums during the day.

Tour guides explain how the streets and buildings were “Jacked Up!” to avoid further flooding as visitors explore two spaces that were created by the city’s successful raising process. This historical tour includes hollow sidewalks, sloped alleyways, and the Underground spaces themselves. Our colorful cast of guides ensures no two tours are ever the same!

Your tour will begin at the Sacramento History Museum, 101 I Street in Old Sacramento.Please arrive 10 to 15 minutes early, and check in at the Front Desk of the Museum. Names will be on a list, there is no need to print tickets. Tours depart precisely on time.

Tours run rain or shine, please dress for the weather outside. We recommend comfortable, closed-toe shoes for the uneven terrain of the tour. Metered parking can be found on the streets of Old Sacramento or in the Old Sacramento Parking Garage on 2nd and I Streets. TICKETS ARE NON-REFUNDABLE AND NON-TRANSFERABLE. A $1.25 processing fee will be added to each transaction. CHILDREN 5 AND YOUNGER ARE FREE, BUT MUST BE INCLUDED IN YOUR TICKET ORDER.

Your Guide to Visiting the California State Capitol in Sacramento

The California State Capitol is a must-see stop on any Sacramento itinerary. Take a docent-led tour or a self-guided tour to experience California’s rich history and witness the making of history through the modern lawmaking process. It's a living museum dedicated to sharing California's past and working to build California's future. The grounds and building are open seven days a week for the public to explore. 

The Capitol building Entering on the north side of the building (L Street side) you walk into the state's county exhibits. Each of the 58 counties has a display case showcasing its best of the best. As you continue through the hallways, you will enter the Capitol Rotunda, one of the most amazing architectural features of the building. The rotunda divides and unifies the Senate and the Assembly, the two houses of the California State Legislature, which occupy the south and north wings of the Capitol, respectively. This circular room is 53 feet in diameter and rises 128 feet from the basement of the building to the oculus at the apex of the inner dome. We like to count how many light bulbs are out, if any, and imagine the daunting task of replacing those!

As you roam the building, keep an eye out for the portraits of every California governor. Some stand out more than others, make sure not to miss governors Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jerry Brown (his first term) and Ronald Reagan, California's only governor to go on to become President of the United States. 

Many people do not realize that you can visit both the Senate and the Assembly galleries, even when houses are in session. The architecture of both galleries reflects an open form of government, inviting visitors to sit and observe the Legislature in action. The red of the Senate and green of the Assembly are borrowed from our centuries-old British parliamentary heritage. If you look carefully on the ceiling of both galleries you'll notice an artist "signature," a tiny gargoyle sticking his tongue out -- just one of many artists' marks throughout the building. 

Be sure to make your way down to the Governor's office to take a picture with the giant bronze bear, gifted by Schwarzenegger. On the first floor you can also peruse historic rooms restored to reflect various architectural and legislative eras representing the evolution of California's history and philosophies through the legacy of its leadership. Some historic rooms that served former governors, secretaries of state, and treasurers are now preserved to show visitors what the offices looked like at the turn of the 20th century.

The Capitol Grounds

Capitol Park is 40 acres spanning 12 city blocks. The park is filled with trees, plants and shrubs that have been gathered from all over the world. And it features some incredible memorials dedicated to different facets of California history. Capitol Park includes memorials for the Mexican-American War, Father Junipero Serra, firefighters, peace officers, the Spanish-American War, the USS California Bell, the Vietnam War and more. One of the most popular spots in the park is the World Peace Rose Garden. It was created as a sanctuary of peace, love and inspiration for people of all nations, cultures and religions. Fun fact, the southeast section serves as a test garden for the All-American Rose Selections. Visitors are afforded the opportunity to see new rose varieties before they are available to the public.

Don’t worry if you can’t see all of these attractions on your first visit to the California State Capitol. With each visit to the Capitol, you are likely to see something new or find yourself on a completely different track, from history to current events to other hidden gems. Adding a visit to the Capitol into your itinerary allows you to see a very important part of Sacramento and the state of California.

California Capitols

Shortly after the end of Mexican rule, Californians began to clamor for statehood. In 1849, a constitutional convention met at Colton Hall in Monterey and proposed a constitution, subsequently ratified by the people, which named San Jose as the first capital.

In December 1849, the first Legislature convened in a two-story adobe hotel in San Jose. The city was composed of little more than huts, tents and clapboard buildings, and the general discomfort did little to endear the city to the legislators.

In 1851 a generous offer from General Vallejo induced the legislators to move the capital to Vallejo where a frame building had been erected for their use. Since housing was virtually nonexistent, many of the Members managed to secure lodging on the steamer Empire, which remained moored at a wharf during the session.

Confusion and inconvenience again brought stormy cries for relocation. After convening in Vallejo in 1852, the Legislature moved to Sacramento to finish the legislative session.

In 1853, the Legislature returned to Vallejo only to find conditions as inhospitable as before. To an exasperated membership, an offer from the community of Benicia for the use of its new city hall proved irresistible, and a bill was passed moving the seat of government to that city, where the legislative session finished.

While the legislative quarters were adequate, it became increasingly evident that Benicia itself was too small to serve as the capital city. With this in mind, the Legislature determined that Sacramento would be the state’s capital and moved from Benicia in February 1854.

Sacramento offered its courthouse for immediate use and a building site for the permanent Capitol. Shortly after the close of the Session of 1854, the courthouse was razed by fire, but a new one was completed in time for the next session.

The new courthouse continued to serve as the home of the Legislature until 1869. This tenure was interrupted only once; during the winter of 1861–62 a severe flood prompted removal of the Legislature to the Exchange Building in San Francisco.

Construction on the permanent Capitol was begun in 1860, and, though not completed until 1874, the Legislature was able to occupy its Chambers in 1869. Except for a major “modernization” in 1908, the Capitol remained virtually unchanged until 1949 when additional space requirements resulted in the construction of the Capitol Annex. Completed in 1951, the Annex attaches to the east side of the old Capitol and houses legislative offices, committee rooms and the Governor’s offices.

In 1976, a total reconstruction of the building was undertaken to strengthen and reinforce the weakening structure. This monumental project was completed in January 1982, and the old Capitol, restored to its turn-of-the-century decor, was again occupied by the Legislature and opened to the public.

Grupo Frontera Announce ‘Jugando a Que No Pasa Nada’ Tour

The boys of Grupo Frontera are ready to bring their new album Jugando a Que No Pasa Nada on the road. On Monday, just three days after dropping their sophomore album, the cumbia-norteña group announced it will hit the road later this year.

The group will kick off their tour in Las Vegas, before making their way to major markets such as Phoenix, Dallas, Nashville, New York City, Los Angeles, and San Diego. They’ll close their run of shows with a homecoming show in Texas’ Rio Grande Valley.

Tickets will be available to the public on Friday, May 17 at 10 a.m. local time while presale tickets go on sale starting Tuesday, May 14 at 10 a.m. Fans can also purchase VIP entries, which include meet & greets with the band’s members.

Review: Pearl Jam does something it hadn’t done in over 25 years

T he Pearl Jam guys are definite road warriors, having logged well over a thousand shows during a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame career that stretches back to 1990.

Yet, that certainly hasn’t translated to many appearances in California’s capital city over the decades.

“In 30-plus years, we’ve only said these words like three times: ‘Good evening, Sacramento,'” vocalist Eddie Vedder remarked near the start of the band’s concert on Monday night at the Golden 1 Center. “I didn’t know that it’s been that rare.”

Not only has a Pearl Jam show in Sacramento been rare, it’s also been something that hasn’t happened in a really, really long time. Indeed, Bill Clinton was President the last time the group played inside the city limits, in 1998 at the old Arco Arena. (Although Pearl Jam did play in the general area in 2000 — at the what’s now called the Toyota Amphitheatre in Marysville.)

“Thank you for your patience,” Vedder said to the full house of fans. “We appreciate you and your faith.”

The band then rewarded the audience for its patience and faith — having waited more than a quarter of a century since the last Pearl Jam gig in Sacramento — by delivering a spellbinding 2½ hour show that married classic tracks with material from its very well-received new album, “Dark Matter.”

In other words, those who plan to catch Pearl Jam when it headlines the BottleRock Napa Valley festival over Memorial Day Weekend should be very excited indeed.

The band kicked off Monday’s show in rather subdued fashion, appearing in silhouette on a mostly dark stage and softly rumbling through “Pendulum,” from 2013’s “Lightning Bolt.” From there, the group — which consists of Vedder, guitarists Stone Gossard and Mike McCready, bassist Jeff Ament and drummer Matt Cameron — creeped right over to the 1996 “No Code” cut “I’m Open.”

Both of those numbers were being played for the first time on this Dark Matters World Tour, nicely illustrating just how greatly the Seattle band changes up the setlist from show to show. Sure, the tour is only a little more than a week old — having kicked off in Vancouver on May 4 — but it’s still mighty impressive to note that eight of the 24 selections performed on Monday were tour debuts.

The absolute highlight of the first portion of the night — and, arguably, the entire show — came with the third number, “Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town,” which proved to be one of those transcendent moments that can define a concert in your memory for years to come. The 1993 “Vs.” song is certainly on the very short list of Pearl Jam’s best, as well as one of the finest rock songs released in all of the ’90s, yet the version played on Monday seemed to reach an even higher level than usual, propelled by a band and a city who were coming together for the first time in ages.

“I just want to scream hello!” Vedder sang as if his life depended on it, as the words were pushed ever higher by the thousands of passionate accompanying vocalists in the crowd. “My God it’s been so long, never dreamed you’d return. But now here you are and here I am.”

It was an absolute love fest between the city and the band, led by a gushing Vedder, who pointed out that the group knew several people in the crowd.

“We’ve got some friends here,” he said. “And I already feel that that includes all of you.”

Yet, it’s important to note that Vedder and Sacramento haven’t always been besties. Indeed, he once drew headlines for blasting the city during a 2013 show in Oklahoma City, where Vedder’s beloved Seattle Supersonics relocated and began playing basketball as the Thunder in 2008. Instead of taking his anger out on the Oklahoma folks, however, the hoops-loving singer swung at the people of Sacramento, who had successfully blocked their NBA franchise — the Kings — from possibly moving to Seattle. It was all incredibly petty and childish — and very 21st century sports fan — as Vedder decided to make it personal.

“When you think about it, and if you’ve been to Sacramento, they’re already kind of (expletive),” Vedder was quoted as saying .

But those bad vibes are long gone, apparently, as Vedder and company continued to rock the Golden 1 Center — which, ironically, is operated by those same Sacramento Kings — with such new album offerings as “React, Respond,” “Running” and “Scared of Fear.”

The group used the opportunity to showcase eight of the 11 songs from “Dark Matter,” and, without exception, this new material held up very well among the classics.

McCready, as per usual, was worth the price of admission on his own merit, burning through some of the hottest guitar leads one will find in all of rock. And just when you think he can’t possibly get more amazing on the frets, he hoists the guitar behind his head and blindly powers through the amazing lead on “Even Flow,” one of a half-dozen numbers played from the band’s game-changing debut, 1991’s “Ten.”

The group finished up the 90-minute-plus main set with the anthem “Better Man” and then returned to play almost another hour’s worth of music during an encore that really could have passed for a second set.

McCready again was at the forefront, powering through epic leads on “Black” and “Alive.” And Vedder seemed to be having the time of his life as he led the crowd in one sing-along after another.

“Sacramento!” Vedder shouted out to the packed arena. “Thank you very much for bringing it tonight.”
