Tove Styrke (born November 18, 1992) is a Swedish singer-songwriter who made her first impression on the Swedish public competing in Swedish Idol 2000 before embarking on a indie-pop solo career – hailing from Umeå, Sweden.

Born the daughter of a ballet instructor and famous musician Anders Östman, Tove Styrke was introduced to performing arts from an early age. In 2009 Styrke competed in the notorious musical talent competition Swedish Idol, where she placed third out of all the 11,000 competitors that auditioned. The singer proved a popular artist, in the mould of similar artists Robyn and Annie, and was subsequently signed by Sony Music in December 2009. The following year Styrke issued her debut single “Million Pieces”, which featured songwriting contributions from Adam Olefins and Lykke Li.

Later that year Styrke released her self-titled, debut album, featuring production from Patrik Berger, Lotus & 2manyfreckles, and Peter Ågren. Rising to No. 10 on the Swedish Albums chart, the record earned popular reviews and spawned the subsequent singles “White Light Moment” and “High and Low”. The single “White Light Moment” was later nominated for “Best Song of the Year” at the Swedish Grammy equivalent, “Grammisgalan”, before the singer won the “Best Newcomer” award at the P3 Guild. In February 2011 aiming to attract listeners of the dance scene, Styrke released the remix EP “High and Low” featuring six remixes of the title track.

In November that year the singer made her UK debut playing two London shows in support of her new EP “Borderline”. After signing with RCA Records, Styrke premiered a new single “Ego”, which would later appear on her sophomore album, “Kiddo”. Released in June 2015, “Kiddo” peaked at No. 14 on the Swedish Album Chart and was supported by extensive touring including a show at SXSW.

Live reviews

Awesome energy and music, and even one or two of the songs from her debut album, Tove Styrke crushed it! Her music and stage presence are perfect for a venue like the Troubadour, where you can watch Tove pour her heart out.

About Tove Styrke

Tove Styrke

Swedish recording artist  Tove Styrke  has released her brand new single " Start Walking " (Sony Music). The infectious track follows the summer release of " Mood Swings ," Tove's first musical offering in three years, and recent feature on Cheat Codes' "All Things $ Can Do" with Travis Barker. "Start Walking" was written together with hit writers & producers Caroline Ailin (Dua Lipa "New Rules + "Don't Start Now"), Sly (Shawn Mendes), Lostboy (Tom Grennan, Anne-Marie) & Pablo Bowman (Marshmello, Alan Walker).

Tove describes "Start Walking" as "a song I made together with some amazing writers and producers and I'm obsessed with it. It's an upbeat song with sad lyrics, which is my favorite combination. It's about a person who knows a relationship is over, and how it sucks to actually be the one to leave but you know there is no other way."

A platinum-selling, Grammy-nominated, and national radio P3 Guld 'Pop Artist of the Year' recipient in her native Sweden, Tove Styrke has been on a meteoric rise since the release of her 2015 album, Kiddo , led by singles "Borderline," "Ego," and "Number One." Since then, Tove has embarked on multiple headline tours, made SXSW appearances, performed on Late Night with Seth Meyers, and has received vocal support from artist peers such as Sam Smith, Tove Lo, and Shawn Mendes. She has also released several collaborations including Cheat Codes & Travis Baker ("All Things $ Can Do"), ALMA ("Good Vibes"), NOTD ("Been There Done That"), Clean Bandit ("Last Goodbye"), and Lost Kings ("Stuck").

Tove Styrke's 2018 album, Sway , a project which solidified her place among the top rising forward-thinking pop artists. The album was bolstered by iconic tracks such as "Sway," "Mistakes," and fan-favorite, "Say My Name," which  Rolling Stone  named to its #11 spot on its 'Top Songs of 2017' list. The album has since garnered 120M+ combined streams, drawing widespread critical praise from outlets including  Pitchfork  (7.5 review),  The FADER  (Gen F) , NME  (5 stars), as well as support from Zane Lowe/Apple Music and BBC Radio 1. The album also launched a run of 7 tours, including support for Lorde and Katy Perry and sold-out headline tours in North America, UK, Australia, and Scandinavia.

Tove Styrke: "I’m Pansexual, But Labels Are Tricky For Me"

The Swedish singer-songwriter contemplates coming to terms with her queerness.

There’s no one way of coming out. In that spirit for Pride 2022, NYLON asked six queer musicians to share their coming out stories. In the as-told-to below, Swedish pop singer and songwriter Tove Styrke describes falling in love with her girlfriend, coming to terms with her queerness, and how it all manifests on her latest album, HARD .

Years ago, I hired a guitarist to play in my band, and we had a very awkward relationship at first. She and I just didn’t know how to act around each other. But over the years, after spending a lot of time on tour buses together, we became very good friends. One day, it dawned on me: I don’t just love this person, I’m in love with this person. So I did something I’ve never done and wrote a song for her called “Show Me Love” — a love letter to her about what I was feeling.

When I tell that story on stage, the audience goes nuts, because most people in the audience don’t know I’m queer. Both on the Marina tour I just opened and at my own shows, there are a lot of queer people in the audience, and it brings an extra layer of togetherness: She’s one of us!

Growing up, I didn’t have a lot of role models for how I felt inside. I remember thinking I might not be straight, but then I would have crushes on boys and be confused: I can’t be gay because I like guys too. I just didn’t have the vocabulary. Today I would say I’m pansexual, but labels are tricky for me. Identity is so complex, it’s hard to find one word that encapsulates everything. For some of my friends, having the words to explain things has been life-changing, but choosing a label feels like such a commitment. Attraction is just about my dynamic with the other person. It doesn’t have anything to do with gender, and that took a long time for me to figure out, to find a way to be queer and be me.

It didn’t fully click until I started dating my girlfriend, Sanna. In 2020, I brought her to the fashion awards for the biggest fashion magazine in Sweden, and the article about me attending the red carpet with her was the most-read article on their website that year. A lot of people think I came out then, but I didn’t — people just assumed I was straight because I had boyfriends in the past. Had I known people were going to react that much, I might not have even brought her, because pulling someone into that spotlight is a little extreme. But I’m glad I did. If that’s such big news to people, then that’s what people need to see. And because it became easier for others to perceive me as queer, it became easier for me to apply those words to myself and not feel guilty — like I was taking up room in queer spaces that I shouldn’t because I had all the privileges of a straight person.

I never used to share anything about my personal life, but it’s important that people know we go through the same things, the same mess. My life is not elevated in any way because I’m a pop star. I was on a mission with this new album, HARD , to let go of my need to always be in control. I have a tendency to edit myself and make sure everything feels safe and perfect, but I wanted these songs to be straight from the heart. That has made them more queer, yes, but also more everything – more me, more relatable, more fun.

A song like “Free” is my own personal sexual liberation anthem. Being sexual is such a big part of being a human — unless you’re asexual — but I’m usually so self-conscious and scared of what people will think of me. So with that song, I just wanted to be unhinged and help myself feel more comfortable. I hope it helps some of my fans feel more comfortable, too.

It sounds cheesy, but a really good pop album lifts people up. When I was a lonely teenager living in Stockholm trying to figure out life, Lady Gaga’s Born This Way album was like a friend in my headphones. I used to ride the subway to the end and back just to be with the music. I felt seen. Gaga’s music felt like that, Robyn’s music is like that — it empowers you and makes you feel comfortable in your own skin, your own situation, your own life. If I can give somebody that feeling? That makes me really happy.

This summer, pop music picked up. Charli got us thinking ‘bout boys; Dua told us not to. Robyn returned in a nostalgic haze, to soundtrack our heartache all over again. T-Swift cancelled her old self, Ariana flourished, and most importantly, Tove Styrke reminded us to have some fun.

The Swedish singer’s third album Sway , released last May, is packed full with bouncy anthems embracing messing up and moving on, the thrill of the chase, an all-consuming crush.

Heavy bass-lines and synthetic sounds evoke a woozy, rushing feeling: the inflated, bubble-might-burst excitement of a blossoming romance, or just the build-up to a big night out. With the authority of a cooler big sister, Tove’s Sway invites you to share her secrets and come out to dance with her, no strings attached.

Having supported both Katy Perry and Lorde this year, the singer-songwriter’s mid-way through her own headline tour in the US, which kickstarts in the UK on 28th October.

We caught up with Tove to talk everything 00s pop, on-stage outfits and her new single “Vibe”, set for release this Friday.

How did you get into music? I’ve always been singing, basically. When I was about ten, that was the first time that I realised that music can transform you, and transform the space that you’re in. I heard Björk, I closed my eyes, and all of a sudden I was somewhere else.

What other artists did you grow up listening to? On one hand, I grew up with Britney and Robyn, and all this amazing pop from the 90s and early 00s. And on the other hand, one of the artists that I started listening to very early and I’ve loved for many years is Bob Dylan.

Do you feel like they’ve influenced the sound of your music now? Yeah, I do. I feel like my relationship to pop music has only grown stronger the longer I’ve been doing this. I want to find a shortcut to people’s feelings, I want you to understand the vibe, the feeling of the song as fast as possible, and I think pop is perfect for that. But Bob Dylan – in terms of finding my own voice and the way you can use your voice as an expression, listening to him gave me a lot.

This year you’ve toured with Lorde and Katy Perry – how was that experience? Those tours were the first thing I ever did on that level, and I feel like that experience changed me. It was the first time in my life I could connect the dots between where I am and the dream I’ve had for all my life – suddenly it’s a reality. I feel like this whole year’s been a long pinch me in the arm moment. That I could be in Stockholm in a little basement studio, making something that I think is really cool, and I release it and somebody like Lorde finds it on the other side of the world, and brings me on tour.

Who would you most like you collaborate with? I think Rihanna would be the coolest. I feel like she’s a modern day Madonna, she can do no wrong. There’s so many interesting up and coming artists as well that I would love to collaborate with. I’ve really love Whack World, the audiovisual album that Tierra Whack did; I love that she’s doing her thing, and the visual side of the album is so cool.

Are visuals important to you as an artist? For me, it’s important to keep this sort of vibrant, bold, very pop, but also interesting and unique visual language. But at the same time, it’s important that the core of the music needs to be real. The story needs to be real, and told in a way that feels genuine, that people can relate to.

Is it important to you that people connect with your lyrics? Yeah, a big part of why I even do this is because I want to connect with people. I want to write it in a way that people can relate to it, and take that song, live with it, apply it to their own life, and recognise themselves in it. That’s where we connect and find common ground. For me, that’s such a comforting thing.

What’s the reception for Sway been like so far, have you had that kind of feedback? I’m so grateful that people really seem to love these songs. Walking on stage and realising that people knew every word to every song brought me to tears the other night. And I’m not that person, I’m not emotional like that in public! It’s this complete understanding between me and them and it’s so amazing, it’s like I’ve found my people.

How do you want people to feel at your shows? I want the show to be a space for people to celebrate. I want everybody to feel like their best self. It’s such a positive energy, not just for me, it’s a back and forth thing. My fans are the coolest people, they’re so smart and funny and they come to the shows with so much to give, and that makes it possible for me to give so much back to them.

tove styrke us tour cancelled

How do you approach styling your outfits? I love dressing up and I love doing my own makeup, that’s like my meditation before shows. With the clothes, I want to create a superhero version of myself, to feel like a larger than life version of me. For instance, I’m wearing an amazing cowboy hat that’s sparkly and pink, and it’s got my logo and name around the brim. I love it so much, it’s the corniest thing but my favourite thing and it makes me feel like I’m a cool anime figure.

Looking forward, have you got any plans to release more music? Yes, I’m releasing a new song on Friday! It’s called ‘Vibe’. To me it’s very much like an ending but a new beginning at the same time. It’s definitely in the same world as the other songs from Sway, but it’s got a little bit more heartbreak. And I’ve been wanting to do a guitar-heavy song for a long time, I’m so excited about it.

What’s it about? The lyric is “I thought we had a vibe”. Like, you really thought that there was something, but things just didn’t work out. I feel like a lot of the songs on the album are about beginnings, before you know if it’s going to work out or not. It was interesting to take it a little bit further into the future of knowing someone, where it actually pans out.

Where would you like to see your career going? I want this project to keep growing. I want to keep expanding, keep exploring, keep being curious and challenging myself. Over the past two or three years I feel like I’ve gained so much confidence, and that confidence gives you a lot of freedom. I really feel like I can do anything – I mean, everybody can do anything. It’s a very good place to be in.

Lorde embarked on this world tour in September, with tickets and tour dates here Khalid is the opener for the European shows, while the North American leg will be supported by Run the Jewels, Tove Styrke and Mitski. [1]

Israel controversy [ ]

In December, Lorde announced extra tour dates for Saint Petersburg, Russia, Moscow, Russia and Tel Aviv, Israel. After this, she received backlash from fans for having a concert in Israel. Because of this, she cancelled the show. [2] Even though many of her fans were the ones who pressured her to cancel the show, many of her fans also criticized her for cancelling it.

Lorde on October 12, 2017

US sitcom star Roseanne Barr attacked Lorde on twitter saying - "Boycott this bigot: Lorde caves to BDS pressure, cancels Israel concert." [3] Fans also criticized Lorde for "hypocrisy", as she will be playing Russia twice. Soon after, ambassador Yitzhak Gerberg invited Lorde to a "friendly meeting" to discuss the issue. He wrote on Facebook:

"I the Ambassador of @IsraelinNZ invite LordeMusic to meet in person to discuss #israel and its role as the only #democracy in the Middle East. By succumbing to the hateful agenda of the few who support #BDS you encourage animosity in the region. Music should unite not divide. Reactions driven by hatred lead to continued #conflict. But solutions come from engagement and lead to compromise, co-operation, and #peace."

She has not yet publicly responded to his invite. [4]
