I’ve spent a lot of time in this cute Ontario town making it my home base 4 to 5 times a year for several years for work purposes. So I’ve dined and shopped my way through Perth and am always happy to return. Which I did and this time instead of staying in town, I lucked out in finding a nearby lakefront cottage Airbnb that’s a short drive away. Making it the perfect home base to explore Perth.

1. join a perth walking tour.

The best way to get to know Perth is to learn from a local. Join a free walking tour and soak up the tales of pioneers and past events. These guided (or self-guided) tours hosted by Perth Tourism Centre are your ticket to insider insights and fascinating anecdotes you won’t find anywhere else.

2. Learn About Perth’s History

Steeped in history, Perth, Ontario, has a captivating narrative that dates back to its early beginnings in the early 19th century. Established in 1816 as a military settlement, Perth was strategically located to serve as a key hub for British military and government operations during the era.

The town’s name pays homage to the historic town of Perth in Scotland, reflecting the Scottish heritage of many of its early settlers. As the settlement grew, it flourished as a commercial and cultural center, boasting bustling streets lined with beautifully preserved Victorian architecture.

In fact, Stonemasons made up a considerable amount of the population and were responsible for many of the well-maintained historical stone buildings in town.

Perth Museum

Swing by the Perth Museum housed in the impressive historic Matheson House. This charming Georgian mansion built in 1840 for the Honourable Roderick Matheson, a senator in Canada’s first parliament after Confederation, is a treasure trove of local history and culture.

Inside, you’ll find everything from intriguing artifacts to exhibits in four period rooms showing you what life was like for the Matheson family.

📍11 Gore Street East | 🕘 10 am to 5 pm Wednesday – Sunday | Free (or donation)

Insider’s tip: Be sure to visit the community garden adjacent to the Matheson House. It can be easily missed. But this secluded garden is so lovely and managed by the Perth Horticultural Society.

The Last Duel in Perth went down in 1833 between two law students John Wilson and Robert Lyon, both fighting over the affections of a lady named Elizabeth. These two foes took their grievances to the field with pistols, and well, let’s just say it was a less-than-honourable way to settle a love triangle.

Those very pistols can be found in the Perth Museum. But if you want to visit the actual site where this duel took place head to Last Duel Park .

Insider’s tip : For history buffs especially wartime enthusiasts, a lesser-known place to visit is the second floor of the Royal Canadian Legion. Here you’ll find military artifacts from the Boer War, World Wars, Korea and Afghanistan. 

4. Discover Code’s Mill

Venture into the heart of Perth and discover Code’s Mill, dating back to 1842. This stone mill is now home to some unique shops you’ll want to visit.

Find your way to the tranquil courtyard with the soothing murmur of the water fountain in The Atrium. Here, you’ll be encircled by charming boutiques, tropical palm trees, and elegant wrought iron balconies – all bathed in sunlight pouring through the 40-foot-high glass ceiling.

Start with indulging your sweet tooth at Perth Chocolate Works . Pick out a chocolate or a box (the best deal) and choose from their top-selling favourites like salted caramel, Forget Me Not, and pralines. With at least one melt-in-your-mouth chocolate, make your way to the next shop.

Kelly’s Flowers and Gift is full of neat and thoughtful gifts with a flower shop tucked off to the side. You won’t leave empty-handed, as there’s bound to be something that catches your eye.

Specialty donuts are all the rage, and if you love them as much as I do, then a visit to Blackfly Grub Hub is a must! Their top-sellers have names like Birthday Cake, Cookie Dough, and PB&C Cup. On Saturdays only they offer Boston Cream (a local favourite) and a vegan donut.

Fiddleheads Bar and Grill is the place to be if you love pub food! And, on fair weather days take a seat at the large outdoor patio with uninterrupted views of the Tay River meandering through Stewart Park. I recommend any of their yummy salads (which isn’t something you normally would try at a pub!).  

5. Shop the Downtown

Downtown Perth is a shopper’s haven all along the charming streets of Gore and Foster. This is always my measure of a small town in Ontario that’s worth visiting . And, Perth doesn’t disappoint!

As you stroll amidst historical buildings you’ll find an endless array of boutique shops. There’s something for everyone! Collectors will love the many antique shops. Art lovers will appreciate the artisan shops and art galleries. Children will adore the toy and book shops. And, on and on.

Shopping in Perth, here are a few that caught my eye and are my long-time faves:

• The Collection Vintage – go for the curated mid-century finds
• Update your vinyl record collection and visit Backbeat Books & Music
• Flint and Honey has all the cozy feels for home and fashion
• For trendy streetwear head to LIDA , you’re not only going to find something cool to wear but will support a woman solopreneur who’s a big promoter of inclusivity
• Ground Waves is where you’ll find a unique gift for that hard to buy for person from housewares to children’s toys
• A fun shop to browse and admire is Queen Bee Millinery which is all about the modern fascinator or hat. Her acclaimed work has been worn on the most prestigious events such as Royal Ascot, as well as the late Queen’s garden parties
• Red Brick Emporium is another lifestyle, clothing, and housewares shop that is fun to browse
• Some of the cutest shops for little ones include Aprikose and Fawn & Fox

6. Visit Perth Town Hall

Right in the centre of town stands Perth’s Town Hall from 1863. Just like other buildings lining the streets, it’s crafted from the same local stone. However, the details on this impressive Town Hall make it truly stand out. Crowned with an ornate wooden cornice and framed by a boxed gable and tower, the mix of wood and stone makes it easily prominent from the rest.

Notably, the intricate bell and clock tower, added in 1874, serve as vivid markers of a structure meticulously designed to make a striking statement as a significant public landmark during its era of construction.

Insider’s Tip: Behind the Town Hall you will find the Perth Bandstand from 1852. Back in the day, this area was previously used as a Farmers’ Market where produce and live animals could be purchased.  Since then the town band, The Perth Citizens’ Band, performs concerts throughout the summer.

7. Find Some National Landmarks

Mammoth cheese.

As part of the Chicago World Fair in 1893, the Lanark County Milk Producers worked together to craft a whopping 22,000-pound cheddar cheese block and shipped it off to the fair by train. The tale behind Mammoth Cheese is so unbelievable that it’s commemorated through a reproduction to prove it really did happen.

📍28 Drummond Street East

McMartin House

The McMartin House, a designated National Historic Site, was built in 1830 by Daniel McMartin, a descendant of United Empire Loyalists and Perth’s second lawyer. What makes this building unique is its Federalist architecture which is uncommon in Ontario. A distinctive feature is the “widow’s walk” atop the house.

Ian Miller and Big Ben Statue

It’s a point of pride that Canadian Olympian Ian Millar considers Perth his home. This esteemed equestrian clinched a bronze medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics with his horse, Big Ben. You can find this large bronze statue between Stewart Park and Code’s Mill.

The County Courthouse

The Courthouse from 1842 is most noteworthy because of the two very old cannons sitting out front. They are so old they predate the Courthouse. Hailing from the era of the American Revolutionary War, these two three-pound cannons are among the few surviving artillery pieces crafted for the army commanded by British General John Burgoyne.

It’s another example of Perth’s military role as a strategic defence location which helped to campaign in Canada and Northern New York before surrendering in 1777.

8. Stroll Stewart Park

Tucked between Mill and Herriott streets behind Town Hall is the gorgeous Stewart Park. Spread across five acres in the heart of downtown Perth you won’t find a prettier park in any other small town in Ontario as you do in Perth.

Full of expansive lawns, gardens, towering mature trees and picturesque bridges spanning the meandering river this is a must-visit each and every time I visit Perth!

Insider’s tip: Visit in the early morning to catch the sublime water reflections. The iconic landmarks like Code’s Mill, Town Hall, Terrace on the Tay, and the Perth Water Tower are all framed perfectly by the park’s natural beauty.

9. Find Some Bridges

Not just another photo-worthy location in Perth but the dry stone bridge has garnered recognition for its design and aesthetic. In honour of the town’s 200-year birthday, the Stone Legacy Bridge was built using traditional methods of cutting and laying the stone without the use of mortar. You can find this on the edge of Stewart Park.

Other ones to visit include Little Tay Bridge and Mill Street Bridge which feature the original stonework. In Stewart Park, the Cavers Bridge and the Rainbow Bridge are a pretty one to capture on camera, while the Green Bridge offers the best view of the park.

Another one to seek out is the King Post swing bridge which is the last surviving bridge built over the Tay River in 1888. A year later, three more bridges were built when the Tay Canal and Tay Basin were completed.

10. Grab a Scoop

Nothing beats a warm summer’s day and grabbing a scoop of ice cream. That’s when I stumbled upon a new ice cream shop called Two Scoops . This cute shop has all the vintage charm you might expect to find in a small town such as this and you can’t beat the location being right next to Stewart Park.

11. Visit the Perth Cheese Shop

Foodies take note, a visit to the Perth Cheese Shop is a must! This family-run business helmed by cheese lovers Meredith and Mark, offers a vast selection of local and imported cheeses from around the world. Stop and sample and you’re bound to walk away with some delicious cheese for your next charcuterie board.

📍64 Gore Street East | 🕘 10 am to 5 pm Monday – Saturday, 11 am to 4 pm Sunday

12. Treat Yourself at Perth Pie Co.

Who can resist a homemade pie? Not I! When you visit Perth Pie you will catch them in the act of pie-making, right in front of you in their open-concept kitchen. Choose from a delightful array of pies, from specialty coconut cream to savoury tourtière, alongside delectable butter tarts that I can never resist.

Among their offerings, they are most famous for their fruit pies with local favourites being tart cherry and wild blueberry.

13. Sit in the Big Red Chair

Many small towns across Ontario feature larger-than-life Muskoka chairs as a fun photo op and Perth just so happens to be one of those towns.

Near the Mammoth Cheese landmark, you’ll find the big red chair between Gore and Drummond streets. Remember to tag your best Instagrammable shot #PerthProud!

14. Admire Some Art

Perth is known for its thriving arts community. This means there are lots of interesting galleries and artisan shops to peruse. Shops and galleries like:

• Studio 87 – a contemporary art gallery
• Times Gone by Studio – is a cool gallery featuring two local artists works
• Studio Theatre – specializing in fine art, and offering a whole host of events for concerts and featured artist shows
• Katherine Muir Miller Gallery – features classic Canadian landscapes on canvas

15. Paddle on the Tay River

Something I haven’t done but think would be fun to do, especially for families is to get out on the water for a paddle. You name it, kayak, canoe or paddle boarding! I can’t think of a more scenic way to spend a few hours than paddling on the Tay River.

Set off from Last Duel Park or the Tay Basin. But if you require rental equipment head to Perth Major Outfitters . They have kayaks, Stand-Up Paddleboards and canoes which come with paddles and a life jacket.

16. Take a Bike Ride Around Perth

Bring your bikes and take advantage of the scenic roads nearby (Rideau Ferry Road and Perth Road are the best ones!). If you forgot to bring your bike, head to Heritage Bikes for all of your rental needs. They can even give you suggestions on routes based on how far you want to ride.

17. Do Some Bird Watching

Reminiscent of what you might find in Norfolk County , visit the Perth Wildlife Reserve for some great hiking trails in nature. This 257-hectare reserve helps preserve the wildlife and nature surrounding the Tay Marsh.

Seek out the Tay Marsh Lookout Tower for the opportunity to view some wildlife while you’re there.

The Tay River Trail, a historical pathway dating back to Perth-upon-Tay’s military settlement in 1816, is my go-to spot for running when I’m in town. Runners and walkers alike start at the Tay Basin as its heart, the trail branches upstream to Bobs Lake or downstream to the Tay delta at Lower Rideau Lake. Keep an eye out for navigational markers – peek through each marker’s circular viewfinder to spot the next one, and let the coloured faces guide you (green for upstream, red for downstream).

Dive into the trail’s history by exploring numbered plaques that match an aerial view, revealing a hidden Heritage Perth waiting to be discovered.

19. Play a Round of Golf

Why not play a quick round of nine-hole golf at the oldest course in Canada? Perth Golf Course (Links O’Tay) holds the title of the oldest nine-hole golf course in Canada, and it’s within walking distance of downtown. It reminds me of Niagara on the Lake which holds the title of the oldest 18-hole course.

Or, families might enjoy a stop at Perth Major Outfitters for a game of mini putt.

20. Relax at the Spa

Why not indulge in self-care at Best Western Perth Parkside Inn & Spa? I’ve enjoyed getting a pedicure and facial.

After your treatment, unwind on the stone terrace while you listen to the gentle sound of water from the fountain, with the gorgeous Stewart Park as your backdrop.

21. Drive-In

Just a stone’s throw away, you’ll discover the Port Elmsley Drive-In, a cinematic gem nestled within the woods where you can catch a movie beneath the open sky. Going to the drive-in is such a nostalgic way to see a movie. With so few of them left in Ontario, don’t miss out on the chance to do this fun activity.

22. Go to Farmers Market

Perth’s vibrant Farmers Market, nestled around the picturesque Tay Basin, boasts a lively atmosphere. Craft vendors can be found inside the Crystal Palace building while “al fresco” dining tables and live local music are held outside along with the local market stalls.

Like most Farmers’ Markets across small towns in Ontario, they are every Saturday between 8 AM and 1 PM (kick off Mother’s Day weekend to Thanksgiving Weekend).

23. Festivals and Events

Perth’s year-round calendar of festivals and events is chocked full of fun. Kick off the new year with a Polar Bear dip (brrr!) at the Frost & Fire Winter Festival in mid-February. Come spring be sure to attend the Festival of Maples (for all things maple syrup).

The standouts in summer include the Stewart Park Festival, the Perth Garlic Festival, and the Perth Night Market.

Lastly, kick off the holiday season with the Festival of Lights and Christmas markets.

24. Enjoy some Eateries

Wow, the food + drink options are endless in Perth. Every time I would come to Perth I would try a different restaurant. That means I’ve enjoyed my fair share of restaurants in Perth. Here are my recommendations.

• Coutts Coffee Roastery & Cafe – You can’t beat the views or location in the historical building built in 1841 called Sheriff’s House
• North Fold Cafe & Bakery – Known for their locally made Artizen Kombucha and plant-based goods, but a must-try is their yummy signature North Folk Cake
• Billings & Co – This cool concept of a modern cafe takes you from being a coffee bar to a wine bar offering bottle service. I spoke with the owner, Mary Catherine, and she wants this to be a space where you can enjoy the restaurant experience at home. With an easy menu of really good-tasting small plates complimented by a boutique wine bar experience, Billings & Co is a standout cafe you need to visit! (Thanks Mary Catherine for the wine recommendation, the Austrian wine was perfect!)

Lunch & Dinner

• Fieldhouse – This is a great choice for a casual lunch, you can’t beat their simple but tasty sandwiches
• The Twisted Fork Cafe & Bistro – Homemade food for takeaway from fresh salads and sandwiches to frozen meals (soups, lasagna, shepherd’s pie). There is not a huge selection for vegetarians, but I can recommend the quiches and quinoa salads
• Bistro 54 – If you crave homemade pasta the best choice is Bistro 54. This was my go-to restaurant when in Perth, so much so, I think the owner recognized me
• Mex & Co – The best Mexican food in the 613 area code! I loved going here when I could get a table on their terrace overlooking the Tay River. (Insider tip: no reservations, so you might need to have a backup place if you want to eat outside)
• The Stone Cellar – For a more refined menu and atmosphere dining in a historic building from 1850 come here. Their menu never changes, so locals come here to enjoy their favourites (mine is the pear and goat cheese salad and pesto gnocchi)
• Maximilian’s Restaurant – a long-standing German/Austrian favourite known for its schnitzel. They also have one of the best outdoor waterfront patios in this 1840 building along the Tay River

25. Sip Local Brew

Just like the small towns of Creemore and Elora , Perth also offers a lively scene dotted with local craft breweries and distillers. Check out these:

• Perth Brewery – I couldn’t resist trying their refreshing grapefruit radler (yum!)
• Bridge Masters Brewing Company – Check out their summer experiences where they offer live music as you sip away
• Top Shelf Distillers – Your place to go for gin and spirits, and I’m a gin girl. I’m sorry my timing didn’t line up to check them out in person (but I know I’ll be back)

I spent two nights at the Best Western Plus Perth Parkside Inn & Spa , which is one of the most popular hotels in Perth, Ontario. Nestled on the edge of Stewart Park, your hotel room may have one of the prettiest views of the town (mine did!). This hotel boasts the perfect location for your stay in Perth as you’re within a short walking distance of restaurants, boutiques, beautiful parks and more.

These newly renovated rooms are spacious, modern, and comfortable. Each room has a flatscreen TV, working desk, and Keurig coffee maker. My bathroom was quite luxurious and even had a jetted tub. The Best Western Plus Perth Parkside Inn & Spa has a swimming pool, hot tub, sauna, fitness centre, and spa.

This accommodation also has a full service restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I enjoyed breakfast at the property one morning, and it wasn’t a problem for the hotel to accommodate my vegan dietary preferences. All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the Best Western Plus Perth Parkside Inn & Spa and I highly recommend that you make this hotel your home base while in Perth.

Located about a 10 minute walk from the downtown shopping district, Nevis Estate is a boutique accommodation with five star amenities. Things to Do in Perth: Explore Stewart Park

Stewart Park is one of the most beautiful city parks that I’ve ever seen. Going for a stroll here is an enchanting experience and truly one of the best things to do in Perth, Ontario. The park itself was donated to the town of Perth by Mrs. Stewart in memory of her husband. She vowed to always keep Stewart Park a free place to visit, even during special events, and nothing can be sold on the park property.

The park itself consists of multiple islands with massive flat rocks of the Canadian Shield making appearances throughout the landscape. The Tay River flows beyond one edge of the park, and its waters split into smaller streams throughout Stewart Park.

It is a charming and stunning place to relax or have a picnic. There are pretty bridges along the walking path that offer idyllic views. Enjoy picturesque scenes of sweeping willow trees and old heritage buildings in the distance. Quaint cottages with landscaped gardens on the edge of the park makes you feel as though you’re in England more than Ontario.

Best Things to Do in Perth: Go Stand-Up Paddleboarding

If you enjoy outdoor activities, going stand-up paddleboarding down the Tay River is a must when you visit Perth. Perth Major Outfitters rents SUPs, kayaks, canoes and more. Your half day paddleboard rentals come with a paddle and a lifejacket. I suggest spending an hour or two paddling up and down this calm and serene river.

From the Rideau Canal (the oldest continuously operated canal in North America), the Tay Canal flows off the Rideau Canal and into the Tay River, through the Tay Marsh and into the Tay River Basin. Larger boats can only travel so far due to some of the lower bridges as you enter downtown Perth. You may encounter a motorized boat on your journey, but it’s more likely that you’ll encounter fellow paddleboarders or kayakers.

Start at the Perth Major Outfitters dock and paddle towards town. Drift beneath bridges and you might even have the chance to spot some wildlife. We saw a turtle and a mink. Eventually, you’ll reach the Crystal Palace and the International Friendship Fountains with Perth Town Hall peeking out from behind some other buildings.

Continue to paddle towards the water tower and past Stewart Park. There’s a little cascade over a rocky area that’s a good stopping point. Turn around and venture back to where you started.

Perth Major Outfitters has other fun activities for the whole family, too. There’s a mini golf course, karts and kick bikes, and they run a day camp in the summer as well. One of the mini putt holes extends out over the water!

Top Things to Do in Perth: Go for a Hike

Let’s go for a hike and enjoy nature! While Perth is a bustling small town, it’s surrounded by parks and greenspace. The Tay River is a fantastic focal point for many of the nature trails in town. In fact, there are 26 hiking trails within a 45 minute drive from Perth, including several provincial parks and conservation areas. Two expansive footpaths, the Trans Canada Trail and the Rideau Trail, run right through Perth. Here are two of my favourite places to go hiking within the town limits of Perth.

Tay River Pathway

The Tay River Pathway is a short recreational trail that’s flat and accessible. Walk down a gravel path and across a boardwalk towards a pretty lookout point. The trail reaches a dead end at the Tay River where you can savour magnificent scenery.

At the start of the Tay River Pathway, the Round Garden for the Blind is a special feature of the trail. It is a circular gathering place with floral and herbal gardens, along with interpretive signs in English, French, and Braille.

Perth Wildlife Reserve

Perth Wildlife Reserve Conservation Area is a 257 hectare reserve that helps preserve the wildlife and nature surrounding the Tay Marsh. This flat path leads you through the forest and across sweeping meadows towards a lookout tower. You may have the chance to observe birds and wildlife, especially during migratory bird seasons in the spring and fall.

The main trail, the Betty Wilson Nature Trail, is 2.5km in length. Aim to spend 30 minutes to an hour at the Perth Wildlife Reserve. It’s a lengthier hiking trail than the Tay River Pathway, although it remains an easy trek that’s great for beginner hikers.

Things to Do in Perth: Discover the Craft Beverage Scene

Perth has celebrated craft brewing well before it became a popular trend! Perth Brewery is nearly three decades old, and Perth is home to a second craft brewery, Laketown Beer Co (formerly Weatherhead Beer Co). There’s also a really amazing distillery to check out, too.

Perth Brewery

Perth Brewery has been around long before craft breweries became a trend! Established in 1993, Perth Brewery is leading the way as one of Ontario’s most renowned breweries. You can find their beer in restaurants and LCBO locations throughout Ottawa and eastern Ontario.

Definitely stop by Perth Brewery to sample their brews or bring some home. They have a whopping 21 different kinds of beer in every style and seasonal variety imaginable. The Euro Pilsner is smooth and refreshing.

Top Shelf Distillers

Top Shelf Distillers is a Perth-based craft distillery creating spirits, moonshines, and liquors. Their retail location and tasting room is decorated with retro signs and artwork. There are classic spirits, like vodka, gin, and whisky. Some of their best sellers include their Reunion moonshines, handcrafted Canadian moonshines with flavours like cherry, apple pie, maple and wild blueberry.

Top Shelf Distillers also offers tantalizing dessert liquors in varieties like Cream Puff, Saskatoon Berry Pie, Butter Tart, Peanut Butter Chocolate, and Mint. Not sure if you’d like a particular flavour? They’ll let you try a small sample of whatever you’d like. The Butter Tart Liquor is absolutely delicious though, that’s the one that I ended up purchasing.

Laketown Beer Co

Formerly Weatherhead Brewing Co, Laketown Beer Co is another fantastic microbrewery in Perth, Ontario. I didn’t get to visit Laketown Beer Co this time around, but I’ll totally check it out when I return to Perth. From their website, they have five different kinds of beer, including one called “The Wreck of Boaty McBoatface” (love it!).

Take a Themed Walking Tour of Perth

Still wondering what to do in Perth? There are many themed walking tours of Perth on the free Driftscape walking tour app. These are interesting self-guided tours centered around a few different topics: Perth Downtown Walking Tour, Heritage Perth Tavern and Brewery Tour, Vintage Signs and Murals Walking Tour and the Elmwood Cemetery Walking Tour.

There are also a couple of special guided walking tours in Perth. Stories from the Settlement is all about the heritage and history of Perth. It’s available upon request on Saturdays in July and August. The Perth Ghost Walk is a spooky guided walking tour that gets you right in the spirit of Halloween (inquire about this tour at the Visitor Information Centre).

Perth Museum and Visitor’s Centre

Perth Museum is a popular tourist attraction and National Historic Site, situated inside the compelling Matheson House. Built in 1840, it’s a stone building that was once the home of the Honourable Roderick Matheson, a wealthy merchant and Canadian senator. The Matheson family lived here for 90 years. You can tour the rooms of the Matheson House and be transported back in time.

Perth Museum is also home to the town’s tourism and visitor centre. Stop by with any questions that you might have while you’re in town. There’s a gift shop on the main level with local merchandise.

Perth Festivals and Events

There are many festivals and events throughout the year in Perth, so you may wish to plan your visit around these fun happenings in town. I quickly counted over 30 different festivities listed on their website ! Some of the best things to do in Perth are its community events and festivities, like the ones listed below or events happening around Halloween and Christmas.

Perth Night Market

The Perth Night Market is an evening to wander the streets of Perth, be entertained by performers, discover its local artisans, and dine under the stars at restaurants and pubs. Go for a stroll in Stewart Park at twilight. Enjoy the heritage architecture in the town of Perth with many of the shops staying open extra late.

Perth Garlic Festival

The Perth Garlic Festival is a celebration of all things garlic! There are food vendors with many garlic-themed meals, snacks and wares. Watch cooking demonstrations and garlic braiding. There’s live music and a beer tent.

Festival of the Maples

Festival of the Maples is Perth’s annual maple syrup festival since 1976. Local maple producers offer fresh maple products. There’s live entertainment, local artisans, and so much more.

Stewart Park Festival

The Stewart Park Festival is a summer festival celebrating the community through a weekend of music, food and local vendors. The festival highlights national and international artists. There’s also a marketplace, a beer garden, and a kids area.

Things to Do in Perth: Go Shopping

One of the best things to do in Perth, Ontario is shopping. There are so many cute boutiques in the downtown core with unique wares and goods by local artisans. The main shopping streets in Perth are Gore Street and Foster Street, though you should wander around the side streets as well. There’s something for everyone in Perth and it’s a fantastic place to shopping for gifts (or treat yourself!).

Wilson Street and Code’s Mill

Located on Wilson Street, Code’s Mill is one of the most striking historic buildings in Perth. The first building was crafted by Scottish stonemasons, as were many of the limestone buildings lining the streets of Perth. It’s an example of industrial architecture that eventually expanded to five buildings, constructed between 1842 and 1932. Code’s Mill started as Codes Custom Wool Mill, later becoming the Tay Knitting Mill and Code Felt.

The factory eventually closed in 1998 and was completely restored and renovated for commercial enterprise. Inside Code’s Mill, you’ll find a collection of boutique shops, galleries, restaurants, and even a wedding venue. Here are some shops you need to check out within this historic building:

• Blackfly Grub Hub : Doughnut shop, including vegan donuts on Fridays/Saturdays/by special order
• Concave Gallery and Widdershins Canada : A gallery for unconventional artists and their art

Things to Do in Perth: Best Restaurants and Cafes

For such a small town, Perth has an amazing restaurant scene. There are an abundance of pubs, restaurants, cafes and coffee shops . Checking out all of them in one or two visits isn’t going to happen, so you will need to visit Perth on multiple occasions to dine at them all. While there aren’t any 100% vegan restaurants, here are a few of my favourite places for vegan eats .

The Fieldhouse

The Fieldhouse is a cute little restaurant and coffee shop in Perth. They offer caffeinated beverages, as well as meals for lunch, such as sandwiches, salads and bowls. I tried the tofu noodle bowl with peanut dressing, and it was the perfect picnic lunch. You can dine at their restaurant or patio, but it often fills up quickly. I enjoyed my meal across the street at a picnic table in Stewart Park.

Maximillian Restaurant

Maximilian Restaurant is locally owned and operated since 1973, and it’s a beloved establishment in Perth. They serve authentic European cuisine, including their famous schnitzel. I love that they are such a vegan-friendly establishment. They have vegan sausages, pretzels, sauerkraut and buttery potatoes. It was such a treat to dine there and really transported me back to my holidays in Germany.

Penny’s Place Diner

Penny’s Place Diner is the place to be for breakfast (and lunch)! The place seems to always be packed, but it’s well worth the wait if you need to wait for a table. It’s a quaint and charming little diner serving homemade and fresh cuisine. You can easily veganize the vegetarian dishes. My avocado toast and hashbrowns were seasoned perfectly and tasted so fresh.

Picnic Cafe

Picnic Cafe boasts excellent coffee, fresh food and friendly service. They have a spacious restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating. On the menu, there’s soup, salad, sandwiches, bowls, and baked goods. I chose the Mezze Bowl made vegan. There are so many tasty flavours happening in this dish that work perfectly with one another.

Michael’s Table

Michael’s Table is a family owned and operated restaurant, run by a mother-daughter duo. It’s a relaxing environment with classic and homestyle cooking where everything is prepared from scratch. The Thai Buddha Bowl is colourful and fresh, with loads of veggies on a bed of rice with red curry peanut sauce.

Gather serves “modern wholesome comfort food” where everything is made in house, fresh, and with great care. There are a few vegan items on the menu, although I really enjoyed this vegetarian-made-vegan dish. This is the Buffalo tofu sandwich, perfectly spiced and also had a fun element of crispiness from the potato chips. There’s also a vegan chickpea omelet offered at Gather, too.

North Folk Cafe

North Folk Cafe is a boutique cafe and market with kombucha on tap, espresso beverages, handcrafted pastries and gelato. I enjoyed a delicious iced Americano at North Folk Cafe, though I’d love to return in the future to try their kombucha and a meal. Even if you’re only craving a coffee like I was, it’s well worth stopping by North Folk Cafe.

Cafe Bean is a charming little coffee shop in Perth that you need to visit. First, the building looks straight out of Brooklyn! Inside, you’ll find friendly service and delicious coffee. Although I got my coffee for takeaway, it looks like a great place to meet with friends or cozy up with a good book.

Tips to Help Plan Your Trip

I visited Perth from Tuesday to Thursday in the summer, and it was pretty busy in town. Expect Perth to always be bustling as it’s such a wonderful place to visit. There is free parking on the city streets for two hours at a time. Many of these parking spots will likely be full. I suggest leaving your car at your hotel and walking everywhere. Otherwise, if you can’t find a spot, there are paid parking lots for a small fee ($1.00/hour).

Many restaurants and businesses close on Sunday and Monday. As these are small local businesses, the owners need to take some time off each week. I recommend visiting Perth later in the week to avoid any disappointment (Wednesday to Saturday is best).

You can travel to Perth all year round. There are festivals and events happening in every season. Summer may be the best time to visit for outdoor activities. The shops and restaurants are open all year long, too.

Perth makes for an excellent day or weekend trip from Ottawa, Kingston, and other cities in southeastern Ontario. I hope that more people make the drive from Toronto and the GTA. While it may take about four hours to reach Perth, it’s well worth the journey. Make a road trip out of it and hit up some other cute towns on the way.

This picturesque eastern Ontario town has historic stone buildings lining its main street. Winding through town is the sparkling blue Tay River. Located in Lanark County, Perth is 85 kilometres southwest of Ottawa. At an hour away, it’s one of the many Ottawa day trips . But with so many fun things to do in Perth Ontario, I love it as a weekend getaway.

Perth is home to a rich heritage, an assortment of unique shops, fabulous foodie finds, and endless outdoor activities. So, with such a diverse range of Perth Ontario things to do and places to explore, it makes for one of the best road trip destinations!

Behold the Mammoth Cheese

The weirdest item on the list of things to see in Perth Ontario is a mammoth block of cheese!

Standing proud in a bright red barn behind the Crystal Palace in downtown Perth, is a replica of a significant piece of the town’s history. Plus, it’s one of the many weird big attractions in Ontario .

An idea sparked in Mr. Henderson, the owner of the Perth Cheese Company, in 1893. With the help of fellow dairy producers, he created an enormous block of cheddar cheese. Made with the milk from 10,000 cows, the cheese weighed 22,000 pounds.

Fun Fact: Ontario’s first Mammoth Cheese was made in Ingersoll in 1866, weighing 7,300 pounds.

The Perth Mammoth Cheese was sent to the Chicago World Fair by train. After a lot of fanfare as it made its way across Ontario, the cheese made a surprising impact on the Fair. After crashing through the floor, a cement platform was made for it. The judges were even surprised by its delightful taste and it became a Grade A cheese!

After the success at the World’s Fair in Chicago the cheese was shipped to England for use by local chefs.

However, one chunk was sent back to Ontario. Now, the famous cheese is in the collection of the Perth Museum. While not always on display with its respective Perth cheese artifacts, it’s often brought out for curious onlookers!

Stroll Stewart Park

In the heart of downtown Perth Ontario is a sprawling green oasis called Stewart Park. Named after the Honourable John Alexander Stewart by his wife, she gave it to the town in 1947 for people to continue to enjoy for years to come.

Officially known as John A. Stewart Park, it’s a scenic 5 acre green space with the Tay River weaving through it. The park also covers parts of Cockburn and Haggart’s Islands, being connecting by beautiful bridges.

The best place to enter the park is across from Code’s Mill. At the entrance is a bronze statue of Ian Millar and his horse, Big Ben. Ian Miller is an equestrian rider and Canadian Olympian who calls Perth home.

One of the popular Perth Ontario events is held in the park every July. The Stewart Park Festival is a free weekend festival that takes over the park in the middle of July for three days. At the festival you’ll find both Canadian and international artists bring some epic tunes to delight of festive goers. There’s also food and various vendors set up.

Travel Tip: Stewart Park is the perfect place to enjoy a picnic! Grab some cheese from the Perth Cheese Shop, sweets from Perth chocolate works, and some iced coffees from North Folk Café.

Indulge in Sweets at Perth Chocolate Works

Across the street from Stewart Park is one of the sweetest Perth Ontario attractions, Code’s Mill. This historic complex is comprised of five different buildings and dates to 1842. Today the old mill is a must stop for visitors and locals alike.

Code’s Mill is home to a number of unique shops like Kelly’s Flowers and Gifts and Blackfly Grub Hub. In addition, there’s Fiddleheads Bar & Grill and a charming interior courtyard patio.

But the sweetest shop in Code’s Mill is Perth Chocolate Works! This family owned chocolate shop originally started on Manitoulin Island . Expanding the company, they opened up a second location in Perth.

Perth Chocolate Works sells a wide assortment of artisan chocolates. Plus, if you come during the week, you can see the magic happen as there are windows looking into their chocolate making kitchen within Code’s Mill!

All of their chocolates are made with high quality ingredients in small batches. Along with Belgian Callebaut chocolate they source ingredients locally when possible.

Browse their shelves to find an array of goodies from bars and barks to fun confections. There’s everything from chocolate covered chips to chocolate drizzled popcorn.

My favourite are their individual artisan chocolates! Two of the top ones on my list are the Orange Meltaway and the Mango, which is made with real mango puree!

Travel Tips: Be sure to pack a cooler when you travel to Perth to bring some goodies home. In addition, there’s a large parking lot behind Code’s Mill.

Hike the Perth Wildlife Reserve

Covering 257 hectares, the Perth Wildlife Reserve is a short 7 minute drive from downtown. This conservation area is one of the many hidden gems in Perth Ontario! When I visited, I didn’t see another person.

Perth Wildlife Reserve is a conservation area that’s home to an array of habitats, making it a rich hotspot for birds, wildlife and plant species. Along with marshlands, a number of waterways run through it like the Tay River and Jebbs Creek. It’s a prime viewing spot for bluebirds, waterfowl, deer, porcupines, and more.

The main trail in Perth Wildlife Reserve Conservation Area is called the Betty Wilson Nature Trail . At 2.5 km, the trail is easy to follow and can be completed in under an hour. However, I highly recommend taking your time.

There are a number of interpretive signs along the trail. Each shares some key features of the conservation area like wildlife, trees and fish in the park.

Plus, at the midway point there’s a lookout platform. Climbing to the top will give you sweeping views of the Tay Marsh. If you’re a bird nerd like myself, download the Merlin app before you go. At the top of the platform, you’ll likely hear more birds than you see and the app will help you know what is nearby. When I visited there was a family of Cat Birds.

The park is also home to another short trail that’s under 1 km. This trail takes you around a butterfly garden. It’s full of various wildflowers and butterflies in the summer.

Travel Tips: There is a parking fee of $8 for the day and can be paid via a pay by phone app. In addition, no dogs are allowed in the park.

Fuel up at Perth’s Coffee Shops

Always on the hunt for the best coffee shops when I travel, I was delighted to find a bunch in Perth! Most restaurants, cafes and coffee shops in Perth are found downtown, either along Gore Street East or North Street.

Coutts Coffee Roastery & Café

A staple in town is Coutts Coffee Roastery & Café. Set within a heritage building which dates to 1841, it’s known as The Sherriff’s House since the town’s Sherriff Thompson lived there. Inside you’ll spot original details like the fireplace and stone walls.

This café also roasts their own coffee in house. They source beans directly from farmers and produce Fair Trade, organic coffee. Plus, Coutts has the best café patio with views along the Tay Canal. Along with a list of coffee beverages, Coutts also serves a variety of baked goods and light meal options.

North Folk Café

One of my favourite places in Perth for coffee is North Folk Café! This is another downtown café but as soon as you enter, you’ll be greeted by the friendliest staff! Plus, the vibe is a mix of earthy boho chic with a splash of Instagrammable!

They use a local coffee, Mighty Valley from Smith Falls. I loved my straight black iced coffee! Plus, if you’re looking for a bite to eat, North Folk serves an assortment of light options, made in house, like pastries, sandwiches, and more. Plus, for tea folk you can enjoy one of their high tea experiences . They are offered weekends in the summer and include tea, mini sandwiches, desserts, as well as fresh flowers and fruit.

Another Perth hidden gem is Hourglass! Situated a few minutes’ walk from downtown, Hourglass is located in the old Perth Show Factory. Built over 100 years ago, the stunning brick building is hard to miss! At two stories, the building covers 17,000 square feet and is now home to a variety of businesses.

Originally Café Bean, Hourglass is a charming coffee shop that offers various places to relax with a coffee or work. Inside it features the exposed brick walls, photos from its past, and has a cozy industrial vibe.

Explore Murphys Point Provincial Park

For outdoor enthusiasts or history buffs, one of the best things to do in Perth Ontario is visit Murphys Point Provincial Park !

Situated on Big Rideau Lake, a 15-minute drive south from downtown Perth, Murphys Point is an awesome park to hike, camp, and enjoy the water. The park has a mix of landscapes including wetlands, forests, lakes.

Murphys Point Provincial Park is home to six hiking trails, most of which are under 2.5 km. Plus, part of the 300 km Rideau Trail from Kingston to Ottawa runs through the park.

The most popular trail is the Silver Queen Mine Trail. The beginning of the trail is across the street from the Lally Homestead, where you’ll find a parking lot. I recommend checking out the old homestead before you head off on the hike.

Silver Queen Mine is an early 1900s mica mine that has been restored. During the summer, on select days there are tours available to take into the mine. However, you’ll need to contact the park ahead of time to book one.

On the way back, you can take the Beaver Pond Trail that leads back to the Lally Homestead parking lot.

Another great trail in the park is the Point Trail. This 5.5 km loop trail takes you out to the tip of the peninsula with awesome views of Big Rideau Lake. Plus, you can stop and have a refreshing swim at a sandy beach along the way.

Trail Tip: I recommend borrowing a trail booklet at the trailhead. In it you’ll find information about the mine, the area’s history, and more interesting facts.

Shop for Antiques

Lanark County is a hotspot for antiquing! Along with books and coffee, I love browsing antique markets and shops. And if you enjoy the same, then you’ll love all the antique shops in Perth.

One of the most popular shops in town is Gore Street Antique Market . It’s considered Eastern Ontario’s best indoor antique flea market.

Walking up to the old brick building, it deceives its true size. Gore Street Antique Market covers over 8500 square feet! Along with a main floor and upstairs, there’s more out front. Within the market are over 45 vendors. There’s everything from jewellery to retro kitchenware as well as books to vintage clothing.

One of the newest shops in the Perth antique world is The Collection Vintage . Also on Gore Street, this little shop is full of midcentury modern items and cool vintage finds. I even found one of the brass bird statues I was looking for!

Another great place to go shopping in Perth is at the Perth Flea Market . South of downtown, the flea market has a mix of antiques and new items. A staple in the community since 1985, this family run shop has something for everyone.

Spot the Red Fox Mural

Welcome to Perth says the mural on the back of The Red Fox restaurant. This massive mural takes up the entire wall in downtown Perth’s main parking lot.

It’s known as the Red Fox Mural and one of a number of murals scattered around town. However, this 1988 mural is famous for being the backdrop of many photos from visitors and weddings.

Unlike most murals, The Red Fox Mural has an endearing story. After finding himself in a tough place after an ended marriage, Craig Campbell needed a place to stay. Larry Geroux, the owner of the restaurant said Craig could stay in an upstairs room.

Instead of paying for his lodging, food and drink, Geroux asked Campbell to paint the exterior rear wall of the building.

And it’s stories like this that make me fall in love with small towns and their lovely people.

The mural is a showcase of Perth’s iconic places and people. There’s an image of a red fox, Ian Miller and his horse, the Tay Basin, the Last Duel, and Stewart Park. Plus, there’s also an image depicting a horse drawn wagon ride celebrating Lanark County as the Maple Syrup Festival of Ontario.

Take a Heritage Walking Tour

With such a wealth of history and heritage buildings, one of the top things to do in Perth Ontario is to take a tour of it!

Crafted by masons are incredible stone buildings lining the streets of Perth. It’s one of main reasons Perth is known as one of the prettiest towns in Ontario ! Plus, these historic buildings help give it a very European feel.

Whether you’re a history buff like me or looking to learn more about Perth, I suggest taking a self-guided Heritage Walking Tour of Perth. The tour includes over 20 stops throughout downtown. You’ll stop at buildings like Town Hall, Code’s Mill and Code Mansion, as well as the McMartin House.

Along the tour, which can be found here , you’ll learn about the history of each building, many of which are over 170 years old.

My two favourites are Code Mansion and McMartin House. However, another interesting stop is at the Pharmasave at 57 Foster Street. Built in 1871, it has been a drug store since its construction. Plus, its one of the oldest pharmacies in Canada.

Dine at the Best Restaurants in Perth

Whether you’re coming in for the day or a couple, you’ll find plenty of places to eat in Perth! Throughout downtown are a variety of restaurants serving up different cuisine. There’s everything from pub grub to Mexican as well as Italian to Canadian classics.

Mex & Co is my favourite restaurant in Perth for a few reasons! They have delicious Mexican food, lovely staff and the best patio in Perth. Sitting waterside on one of their patios, you have amazing views as well as shade from the overhanging umbrellas. If you’re looking for what to order, I suggest the Vegetarian Burrito.

Fiddleheads Bar and Grill is another great spot to grab a bite to eat. Located in Code’s Mill, you can dine inside or on the patio overlooking Stewart Park. Their menu features a range of classics like nachos, perogies, prime rib, and more.

Bistro 54 is a cozy Italian restaurant. Located within an 1858 blacksmith shop, the menu boasts fresh hand made pasta and fresh desserts made in house. A few top dishes include Zuppa Gamberi di Bosco for its fabulous seafood and the chicken parmesan.

For 50 years, Maximilian Restaurant continues to be a staple in town. Serving up authentic European cuisine, the restaurant is best known for its schnitzel. Set in another heritage building, Maximilian is also home to an adorable little patio with views of the water.

More Places to Visit in Perth Ontario

Explore the Perth Museum – Situated within a historic building in town called the Matheson House is the Perth Museum. The stunning stone building dates to the 1840s and is the perfect place to explore, especially on a rainy day. Inside the Museum you’ll find elegant rooms that are furnished to represent the Matheson family’s time in the home over 160 years ago. Plus, the Perth Museum is a National Historic Site.

Visit Scotch Line Farms – Just outside of town is a working cattle farm that blossoms in the summer. If you’re looking for place to visit in Perth in August then head over to Scotch Line Farms. The farm has a photogenic sunflower field that’s worth a wander!

Shop the Perth Farmers Market – One of the best things to do in any small town is visit the local farmers’ market. While in town, I highly recommend shopping the Perth Farmers Market. Running on Saturdays from May through Thanksgiving, you’ll find it at one of top attractions in Perth, Crystal Palace. Vendors are inside and out and range from local produce to artisan crafts.

Take in a Show at Studio Theatre Perth – Another fun thing to do in Perth Ontario is to go to the theatre. The Studio Theatre Perth is considered one of the best community theatres in eastern Ontario. Among the live performances include musicals and plays.

Browse Perth Art Galleries – Along Gore Street you’ll find a variety of art galleries in Perth Ontario. One of my favourites is Studio 87. Inside you’ll find an array of mediums by artists from within 100 km of Perth. Riverguild Fine Crafts is known as one of the oldest artist co-operatives in Canada. Another is Katherine Muir Miller Gallery.

Where to Stay in Perth Ontario

If you’re planning on more than a day trip to Perth and looking for accommodation, there’s plenty right downtown. Below are some of the best places to stay in Perth, with options for luxury hotels and a budget inn.

Best Western Plus Perth Parkside Inn & Spa – With the best location, the Best Western Plus in Perth offers a boutique experience. The hotel has a full-service restaurant, sauna and hot tub. Each room includes a spa bath and some feature kitchenettes or park views of Stewart Park.

The White House Inn – Another beautiful downtown Perth accommodation is the White House Inn . Rooms are cozy with chic wooden accents. There’s also a restaurant on site. Additional amenities include access to the Parkside Spa with indoor pool and fitness centre.

Perth Plaza Inn – Set along the Trans Canada Highway, just north of downtown, is the Perth Plaza Inn . Along with an outdoor pool, the inn has some rooms that have spa baths and kitchenettes. The Plaza Inn is only a 20-minute walk into downtown and is a great budget friendly hotel option.

Located an hour southeast of Ottawa, Perth is an adorable town in Lanark County. The town still retains much of its old-world charm, with well-maintained heritage buildings that you can still explore.

It’s a peaceful town, especially after escaping from the noisy city of Ottawa . You’ll be able to enjoy mornings woken by only birdsong and stroll down the street without any construction noise.

It’s the perfect, peaceful getaway in Ontario. And the fact that it is full of amazing food and stunning hiking trails doesn’t hurt either!

I took a restorative 3-day weekend away in Perth and regained my love for Ontario. So I’m writing this guide to help you fall in love with Perth, just like I did.

15 Best Things to Do in Perth, Ontario

1. Explore Code’s Mill

The first building that caught my eye in Perth was Code’s Mill.

This classic limestone building is located on the Tay River alongside Stewart Park. The building was founded as a mill for the Codes Custom Wool factory, which processed sheep’s wool.

It evolved from a functional mill in the 1990s and became a landmark for the town.

Now Code’s Mill houses some of the best shops in Perth.

Even if you aren’t interested in visiting the shops, I recommend going inside this unique building. The interior atrium is stunning!

Perth Chocolate Works

Of course, I had to start with chocolate.

Perth Chocolate Works is a must-do when you’re in town. They’ve been making gourmet chocolate since 1911!

Their chocolate supports fair trade cocoa farming in West Africa, so you can be sure it’s ethical and delicious.

I stopped by for a truffle and left with a box of chocolates that I devoured before dinner.

Pick up a box for yourself or get some packages as a gift.

Every time you visit, the selection will change. With their locally sourced ingredients and small-batch production, you’re sure to find something new every time you visit.

Kelly’s Flowers and Gift Boutique

Are you a plant lover? Then you should stop by Kelly’s .

I popped in to browse and nearly left with a bag full of inspirational signs, cute Christmas ornaments (yes, in February!), and gorgeous placemats.

At the back of the store, you can find a selection of plants that will brighten up any home.

Fiddleheads Bar and Grill

If you’re looking for a casual meal, Fiddleheads is a safe bet.

The interior has an Irish pub feel, with exposed beams and limestone walls. You’ll feel very at peace drinking a beer here.

I stopped by for salmon on my first day and was honestly surprised at how delicious it was. I’ve heard their fish and chips are even better, but as a celiac, I couldn’t test it out myself.

Visit in the summer to sit on their patio overlooking Stewart Park.

Blackfly GrubHub

Blackfly GrubHub gives Suzy Q’s in Ottawa a run for its money. Not only are they excellent donut makers, but they’ve come up with fun flavours that you’ll never see anywhere else.

When I visited, they had pina colada, Bailey’s hot chocolate, chipotle chocolate, and cinnamon toast crunch!

They have vegan options as well.

You can also get unique hot dogs there, like a delicious-looking BLT dog.

Concave Gallery

Art lovers should stop by Concave Gallery. It’s a space where art can come to life.

Their collection is unique in that they include mixed-media forms and allow artists who don’t fit into traditional gallery shows.

2. Explore the Old Mill’s Shops

The Old Mill is another historic building that you can’t walk past without taking a photo. It was built in 1835 as a flour mill before being turned into a National Trust Building in the 1990s.

Now it houses one of my favourite things to do in Perth.

The Perth Cheese Shop

Perth is known for its cheese. A visit to Perth isn’t complete without a stop at this gourmet cheese shop.

The Perth Cheese Shop focuses on local cheeses and charcuterie boards. Stop in to sample some cheese and pick out a board to take on a picnic.

I love their charcuterie cones – they’re smaller and perfect to take with you on a hike!

Red Brick Emporium

Red Brick Emporium is a home goods store that features locally made decorations. I love their DIY kits and quirky socks.

3. Learn About Perth’s History

Perth was first settled in 1815. It was named for Perth in Scotland, as many of the settlers were Irish and Scottish.

It became a military settlement soon after due to the War of 1812 in America. The soldiers were offered land in exchange for their service.

Soon the area was well populated and the residents founded their own government.

Perth Museum & Visitor Centre

The Perth Museum is located inside the Matheson House. The home was originally owned by Roderick Matheson, a wealthy merchant who was also one of Canada’s first parliamentary senators.

His home is now a museum that features four historically maintained rooms to reflect how it looked in the 1840s, when Matheson lived in the house. You’ll learn more about life in early Canada when you visit.

Behind the house is the Courtyard, which is a stunning spot to visit in the summer.

McMartin House

The McMartin House was built in the 1830s for Daniel McMartin, one of Perth County’s first lawyers.

Perth still has a great legal tradition. When you walk outside the town centre, you’ll see many signs for law practices out of the surrounding houses.

The house is free to visit Monday – Friday from 1 to 4pm. Stop by to see the original designs inside.

Perth, Ontario is home to the last fatal duel in Canada.

In 1833, a law student named Robert Lyon was killed in a duel with his friend John Wilson. They were fighting over Elizabeth Hughes, a woman that they both fancied.

The duel is commemorated at Last Duel Park.

4. See Perth’s Most Famous Sites

The Mammoth Cheese

For the Chicago’s World Expo in 1893, the town of Perth produced a Mammoth Cheese. This wheel of cheese weighed 22,000 pounds!

It was meant to promote Canadian cheese on a global scale. Now, Perth is best known for its cheese.

You can visit a commemorative cheese at the Tay Basin behind the Crystal Palace.

Big Red Chair

Like many small towns in Ontario , Perth has a giant red Muskoka chair for visitors to visit.

In winter, you can’t access the chair, so I could only see it from across the Tay Basin.

But in summer, you can go and sit on this big red chair for a classically Canadian photo.

Dry Stone Bridge

The dry stone bridge is located in Stewart Park. It was built in 2016 to celebrate the town’s 200th birthday.

It was built using ancient techniques of dry stone masonry, which is why it looks much older than it is.

It’s a great spot on a sunny day to look out across the park.

5. Get Back to Nature on a Summer Hike or Winter Snowshoe

Perth isn’t just a cute town to laze about in. You can have a very active vacation with these epic spots for hikes, snowshoeing, and walking your dog.

Stewart Park

Stewart Park is one of the prettiest things to do in Perth.

The park is located beside Code’s Mill and is the perfect place for a summer picnic.

I had a winter picnic in the park, following by a nice wander through the snow. It was bracingly cold, but still a gorgeous place to spend an afternoon.

In winter, you can bring your skates for the small free ice rink in the park. It’s only a few metres big, but is a great place for a quick skate .

The park is a big spot for dogs, which is why I can’t wait to go back in the summer with my pup for a nice picnic with some local cheese and chocolate!

Last Duel Park

Last Duel Park is south of the city centre.

It commemorates the spot where the last fatal duel was held in all of Canada.

For those who are interested, it was between two law students who were fighting over disparaging remarks made about a local woman. It’s unclear whether one of the men was sweet on the girl or if his friend was, but he felt the need to defend her honour.

In the end, it cost him his life.

It’s now a large park and a beautiful campsite, complete with electrical hookups for RVs.

In the daytime, it’s massively popular as a local dog-walking area. So expect a lot of cute pups!

Rideau Trail

The Rideau Trail is a 387 km network of trails from Kingston to Ottawa .

Perth County is located along this trail. One of the best things to do in Perth is to hike or snowshoe a part of this trail.

I’ll be honest, the trail is hard to find and follow in the winter. Even with snowshoes, it’s unclear where the trail goes after about 1km following the Rideau Canal.

In summer, it’s said to be better marked and easier to complete. However, it does cross a number of roads without a crosswalk. So be careful!

Perth Wildlife Reserve & Tay Marsh Lookout Tower

My favourite hike that I did on my weekend trip in Perth was at the Perth Wildlife Reserve.

You’ll need a car to get to it from Perth.

Once you arrive, you’ll pay a parking fee online via your phone. Or you can buy this ahead. It’s $7 for the day.

Then get ready for a beautiful hike!

The trail is very easy to traverse, with beautiful trees and berry bushes on either side. The main loop takes you to the Tay Marsh Lookout Tower, where you can get a higher vantage point to see the entirety of the marsh.

In winter, it’s a beautiful snowy landscape.

You don’t really need snowshoes to do this winter hike , but I had a new pair and I was gonna test them out!

In summer, solid running shoes would be enough for this easy hiking trail. But be warned: there are many garter snake spottings.

It takes less than an hour to walk this 2.9km trail.

Murphy’s Point Provincial Park

Located near Perth, Murphy’s Point Provincial Park is full of beautiful hiking trails.

Visitors can go hiking in the summer or cross country skiing in the winter. You can also tour the Silver Queen Mine when you visit to learn more about the area’s mining history.

In the summer, the RV and campgrounds are open for use.

There are also reports of snakes on these trails in summer.

Kiwi Gardens

Plant lovers won’t want to miss a visit to Perth’s Kiwi Gardens.

It’s a plant nusery that features 10 acres of show gardens. Fans of botanical gardens around the world will love a stop to admire these plants.

Kiwi Gardens is open from May to October.

6. Take a Perth Walking Tour

One of the best ways to get to know any city is with a walking tour.

Use the Driftscape app for a free historic walking tour of the town. The downtown heritage walk is perfect for exploring the architecture and most prominent sites in Perth.

7. Sip Suds at a Perth Brewery

Perth Brewery

If you only have time for one brewery when you’re visiting the attractions in Perth, Ontario, make it the Perth Brewery.

Founded by a “hippie buffalo farmer”, Perth Brewery is a small batch beer company. They’re most famous for their Last Duel lager and their O’Canada Maple Ale.

My favourite is Easy Amber.

You’ll also find their beer served in basically every restaurant in Perth.

Weatherhead Brew Co.

Weatherhead is a beautiful brewery located on the Tay River. Their summer patio is a great place to sample their beer.

This brewery comes with a fantastic story.

Samuel Weatherhead, was taken prisoner by pirates when he ran away from his home in Barbados in the 1700s. He was stranded on an island when he refused to join the crew, until Quebec lumber tradesmen rescued him. From there, he moved to Canada where he established a booming trade post on the Tay River.

Although Samuel didn’t found the brewery, his spirit inspired the founders.

I love the names of Weatherhead’s beer – especially Long Winter’s Nap (a Russian stout) and Drink Me!

Top Shelf Distillers

Are spirits more your thing?

Top Shelf Distillers should be on your list of things to do in Perth, Ontario!

The distillery makes local spirits that you’ll find around the Ottawa area.

My favourite is their moonshine – solely for the indie designs of the bottles.

They sell classic spirits like gin, moonshine, homemade bitters, and even dessert liqueurs (the peanut butter chocolate one makes my mouth water!).

8. Go Shopping in Perth, Ontario

One of Perth’s primary tourist attractions is the main street. It’s historic-looking but features modern shops with unique opportunities for souvenirs .

There are so many shops to feature, so I’ll do a quick rundown. These shops are all very close together so it’s easy to visit them all in an afternoon (depending on how long you need to browse).

• Apropos is a small florist shop off the main street in Perth. It’s a local favourite for blooms (as I was told by every local I asked for their 5 favourite things about Perth).
• Fall River Fashion has one of the most beautiful storefronts in Perth. Stop by to shop their selection of globally sourced fashion. And if you go down the alley beside the shop, you’ll find the Fall River Gelato Cafe, which is perfect for a mid-shop pick-me-up!
• Blackbeat Books and Music was my first stop for shopping. They have an amazing collection of books that you can read while lounging in Stewart Park on a sunny day.
• Flint and Honey is a local favourite for clothes. They offer seasonal styles that everyone will love.
• Need a new hat? Head to Queen Bee Millinery !
• Gore Street Antique Market should have a warning that says “we will take all your money” because that’s how I felt the moment I walked in. I wanted everything!!
• Ground Waves is a hub for kitchenware and cookbooks. If I didn’t have a tiny apartment kitchen, I’d have left with a car full of their hand towels! Their gift selection is truly wonderful. If you need to pick up gifts, come here!
• The Rideau Candy Shoppe is a must for anyone with a sweet tooth. You’ll love this tourist attraction that features candy from around the world.
• Art lovers should stop by Katherine Muir Miller Gallery . I’m not a big art lover, but I was transfixed by the vibrant landscapes that felt like Indigenous art meets the Group of 7.
• Studio 87 is another beautiful art gallery in Perth that’s great for browsing.

9. Perth Pie Co.

One of the best things to do in Perth is to stock up on pies – both sweet and savoury – from Perth Pie Co.

They have seasonal flavours that are so perfectly delicious. You can ever get frozen pies to take home!

10. Kayak the Tay River

Perth is located on the Tay River, a beautiful and clean waterway that wraps around the town and follows the Rideau Trail.

In the summer, one of the best things to do in Perth is to get out on the water.

Rent a kayak, canoe, or stand-up paddleboard from Perth Major Outfitters. Then spend the day exploring the waterway and enjoying the greenery surrounding you.

You don’t need to be an expert to enjoy your time on the waterfront. The Tay River doesn’t have an incredibly strong current, so even beginners can spend some time paddling the river.

If you bring your own canoe or kayak, you can launch it from Last Duel Park. The Tay Basin also has a launch, but it’s often crowded on sunny days.

I brought my inflatable kayak with me, and you should too!

11. Have a Spa Day

I escaped to Perth to relax. And you can too!

Pamper yourself with a massage, facial, and mani/pedi at one of the town’s best spas.

I stayed at the Best Western Plus Parkside Inn and Spa , which is the most popular destination for spa-goers in the city. You can get a variety of treatments, including a haircut and style at their attached salon.

Other local options include the Beach House , Tay River Reflections , and Southfork Spa.

12. Rent a Bicycle

Perth is a beautiful place to explore in the warmer months. Get around more easily by renting a bicycle from Heritage Bikes and cycling along the city streets.

I recommend venturing out of the main town centre to go along the Tay River to Last Duel Park or to wind through the residential roads. It’s a great way to see all the best places to visit in Perth, Ontario.

The local houses are so charming!

13. Watch a Local Production at Studio Theater

I love local theatre. As a theatre kid growing up, I feel an obligation to go to any theatre production I find in small towns.

The Studio Theatre is unique in that they don’t just show plays. They also host concerts and display movies.

14. Watch a Movie at the Drive-In

Drive-ins are one of the best things to do anywhere. In Perth, Ontario, you can go back in time and enjoy a modern flick at an old-school drive-in.

It’s one of my favourite Perth Ontario tourist attractions in the summer.

The nearest drive-in is Port Elmsley Drive-In , between Perth and Smith Falls (about 20 minutes away).

The drive-in is only open in the summer months. Pair it with a sunny day exploring Perth for the perfect day in this small town.

15. Get Fresh Veg at the Farmer’s Market at the Crystal Palace

Who doesn’t want to eat local produce?

The Farmer’s Market in Perth is open on Saturdays from May – October. Visit between 8am and 1 pm (but it’s best before 11 am) to shop the local vendors.

You’ll find some of the best jams, local cheese, organic produce, handmade crafts, and small-batch kombucha.

The market is located at the Crystal Palace on the Tay River. It’s a great spot to grab some goodies for breakfast before walking a bit of the Rideau Trail.

Best Perth, Ontario Restaurants

Perth is full of amazing places to eat. I basically did a tour of every eatery in the long weekend when I visited, and genuinely was so excited at all the menu options.

As someone with dietary restrictions (celiac, lactose intolerant, etc.), I usually struggle in small towns.

But Perth is so accommodating!

Everywhere had great, inclusive options that made it so easy for me to enjoy every meal I had.

The Stone Cellar ($$)

The Stone Cellar was my favourite sit-down spot for meals. It’s a gorgeous eatery with stone walls and a massive fireplace on the main floor.

You can pop in for lunch or put on a nice top for a romantic dinner (even if it’s for one!).

The servers are so amazing and the food is delicious. Seriously, they have a candy apple duck dish and a peach bourbon salmon!

I recommend the salmon, the mussels, or the brie flatbread. Don’t forget to pair your meal with a Perth Brewing beer or a local wine !

Northfolk Cafe ($)

Northfolk Cafe is my #1 spot in Perth. I think I’ve told every single person I’ve spoken to since my trip about this amazing place.

I was drawn to the cafe for the artisan kombucha and homemade gelato, but stayed for legitimately the best grilled cheese I’ve ever had. Made with brie and apple this grilled cheese has a tangy red pepper jam that I immediately bought a jar of (and have eaten almost all of it in the 5 days since). They even have gluten-free bread options!

They also have a selection of made-in-house sweet treats daily. And tons of local souvenirs you’ll enjoy browsing.

The cafe is expanding to do takeaway dips, soups, and more. I highly recommend a stop for breakfast or lunch, or to get some takeaway treats for later!

Seriously, if you don’t eat anywhere else, eat at Northfolk !

Bistro 54 ($$)

When I asked locals for recommendations of where to eat, a number of them pointed out Bistro 54.

This Italian restaurant is only open Wednesday – Saturday. So plan your visit accordingly.

They’re best known in Perth for their homemade pasta, but my mouth waters at legitimately every item on their menu.

Their pizzas would be perfect for a takeaway dinner in the park!

Coutts Coffee Roastery and Cafe ($)

Coutts Coffee Roastery and Cafe makes a latte that rivals any I’ve ever found in Canada . And their range of flavours gives you so many options!

Once again, I was shocked to find (delicious) gluten-free bagels and breads here to be able to eat their yummy breakfast sandwiches.

This is definitely the place to go for your caffeine fix .

Fiddleheads Bar and Grill ($$)

Located in Code’s Mill, Fiddleheads is a great place for a casual lunch.

In winter, you can dine indoors to bask in the warmth of their Irish pub interior. In the summer, dine on the patio to have a view of Stewart Park.

Fieldhouse ($$)

Fieldhouse is a cafe in Perth only open Tuesday to Saturday for lunch.

You’ll want to stop by for a homemade croissant and a sweet treat.

Picnic Cafe + Catering ($)

Only open on weekdays, Picnic Cafe stands out for their variety of gluten-free and vegan options. Their gluten-free brownie is incredibly fudgy and delicious!

O’Reilly’s Ale House ($$)

If you’re looking for live music to accompany your meal, head over to O’Reilly’s!

They’re best known for their entertainment, beers on tap, and wide range of culinary delights.

Maximillian’s ($$)

Fancy a schnitzel by the river?

Maximillian’s is an authentic German eatery located amongst the quaint shops on Perth’s main street. Who would have thought you could find authentic Bavarian cuisine in one of the Perth, Ontario restaurants?

They even have gluten-free options!

Mex & Co. ($)

For a town with no Mexican heritage, Mex & Co came surprisingly highly recommended. Locals told me that it’s best in the summer, when you can eat on their waterfront patio.

But in winter, the warmth of a fajita never fails to brighten your spirits, too!

Tips for Visiting Perth, Ontario

Perth is a great town to visit on a day trip from Ottawa or Kingston.

They know they’re popular with visitors, so the town has free street parking for 2-4 hours (depending on the street). Look for the very visible signs posted at street level.

These signs also have maps to show you all of the parking lots in Perth.

When in doubt, you can park by the Crystal Palace and the Perth Library at the paid lot.

Best Time to Visit Perth, Ontario

Summer is said to be the best time to visit Perth. It’s when the wealth of outdoor activities are in full swing.

The town is far quieter than the busy summer in Ottawa and offers many opportunities to slip inside for air conditioning at the shops.

However, I visited in winter and found the town just as charming!

With a free skating rink, snowshoe trails, and warm fireplaces in most restaurants, I was overwhelmed with things to do in Perth.

All of the main tourist attractions were open to visit, so I had no problem enjoying the best of the small town, even if it was covered in a blanket of snow.

Sunday Closures

Perth is a small town. That means that most stores close for at least one day of the week – including the restaurants.

Expect almost every shop to be closed on Sundays, and often on Mondays as well.

If you’re planning a three-day weekend in Perth, try to come Friday to Sunday rather than Saturday to Monday. You’ll get two days to enjoy more stores and restaurants that way.

Best Western Parkside Inn and Spa

The Best Western in Perth is the most convenient place to stay.

Located one block behind the main street, and backing on to Stewart Park, you’ll be right among the town centre. It makes it so easy to roll out of bed, have your free breakfast, then immediately get to the Perth, Ontario tourist attractions.

The hotel comes complete with a jacuzzi tub in every room!

My stay was incredibly comfortable. I even had the whole pool and hot tub to myself.

Take advantage of their spa services while you’re there. And head down to the restaurant for a delicious dinner in their fireside, glass room. You’ll get to enjoy views of the park (either in full bloom in summer or covered in icicles in winter).

It’s the best Best Western hotel I’ve ever stayed in!

Nevis Estate

Looking to stay in a heritage building?

Head to Nevis Estate , a boutique B&B that is so picturesque your Instagram feed is sure to blow up!

The residence is a cute cottage B&B, with a private pool on the grounds and beautiful gardens for guests to enjoy.

It’s only a short walk from Perth’s main street with all the shops and restaurants, so very convenient for anyone visiting. You’ll be very close to all the things to do in Perth county.

My favourite thing about the Nevis Estate is the Scotch-named rooms. As someone who lived in Scotland , I can very much appreciate a good scotch – and even have a favourite room because of it!

They have a lobby bar opening in 2022, which will make the scotch experience even more complete!

Best Airbnbs in Perth, Ontario

If you have a car, consider staying a short drive from Perth to have a full house to yourself.

You’ll still be close to what you want to do in Perth while getting a more private place to stay.

• My favourite Airbnb near Perth is this converted gothic church. It features 2 bedrooms with modern amenities. You can enjoy nights curled up in front of the fireplace and still easily access Perth within a 5-minute drive.
• Want more of a cottage feel? This historic log cabin is complete with its own sandy beach and bonfire pit for evening s’mores. You’ll have the luxury of a summer cottage just 15 minutes from Perth’s downtown core.
• For a winter cabin, check out this traditional log home . You’ll be located on Big Rideau Lake with plenty of snowshoe trails at your doorstep. You can even ice fish right outside of the log home!

How to Get to Perth from Ottawa

Perth is most commonly accessed from Ottawa, both for locals and for tourists who fly into the Ottawa airport .

Perth is a 1-hour drive (85.7km) from Ottawa.

Leave downtown Ottawa to get on the 417 highway heading West. Take exit 145 for Carelton Place/Toronto.

Continue on to Highway 7. From there, you’ll turn left onto Drummond St. W, right onto Isabella St., and left onto Gore St. West.

There are also signs for Perth from the highway that you can follow.

Or enter “Perth, Ontario” into your GPS for directions.

Is Perth Ontario Worth Visiting?

I certainly think so!

Perth is a cute little town with lots of history. If you’re looking for quaint shops and restaurants to spend your day in, Perth has it all!

The little town is so peaceful that I genuinely started looking at house rentals a day after I’d arrived. If I hadn’t had to come back to my apartment, I might never have left this cozy getaway.

Many people sleep on Perth. It’s an underrated historic town that makes the perfect weekend getaway from Ottawa or Kingston.

Whether you’re travelling solo, on a romantic getaway, on a family weekend, or with your friends, you’ll love visiting Perth.

In Western Australia for example, heading north will see you experience landscapes that rival some of the best in the world.  We have the huge sandstone cliffs and river gorges of Kalbarri National Park only a few hours travel from Perth.  A little further north, if you like hiking then you will love the walking trails and the spectacular gorges of Karijini National Park. A fresh water swim is a must here - don't worry there are no crocs !  The Kimberley region in my opinion is the most idyllic, beautiful and isolated landscapes that you simply must put on your travel bucket list. By land or by sea the experience will never leave you but linger a lifetime in your heart.
