The Great Ocean Road Melbourne - Adelaide 4 day 3 night Tour

The tour was brilliant. Mick, our driver and guide, was very knowledgeable. He adapted the itinerary by adding in extra little stop-offs where we had time. He was great in keeping us informed about rest stops, food and other fundamental requirements. The actual tur was great - great scenery, wildlife and views of a small area of vast country.

7 Day Perth to Exmouth Explorer Loop Tour

7 Day Perth to Exmouth Explorer Loop

It's an adventure, not a holiday Mar 2024 • Solo I wanted to see some of the west coast of Australia, which isn't as easy as the East Coast, especially if you don't have your own form of transport. This trip was perfect for that! There were about 22 of us in total, all varying ages, and some solo or with a friend or two, aswell as a wide range of nationalities. We were able to see some beautiful places, helping us to appreciate the natural world. We saw wild kangaroos, wild dolphins, turtles, and more if you chose to do an excursion. Everything was well organised, and it helps that the job to ensure it was organised was our leader, Geoff. He was able to ensure the smooth running of the tour, while we focussed on the experiences. Geoff told us about some of his favourite spots, enlightened us with his own stories and experiences, and took us to places we wouldn't have known about otherwise. Breakfasts, lunches, and dinners are included. This is mainly cereals or toast for breakfast, wraps for lunch, and a mixture of meals in the evenings. Everyone gets stuck in to set up, prepare, cook, and clean up afterwards. As Australia is a big country, there were long bus journeys, unfortunately, I feel the bus could have been more updated. It was tight between the seats, and I am only 5 foot 2. The only place for our legs was straight down, there was no room to put them underneath the seat in front of us, to stretch them out a little, as the seats have low backs. We also had a day bag with us on the bus, and this had to go by our feet as there was no where else to put it, such as over head compartments, or under the seats due to how little space there was. I felt bad for those who were taller. Our large bags were in a trailer attached to the bus, which I thought was a good idea. There were also no curtains or blinds on the windows. I was sat on the left side of the bus, and it got very hot due to the sun being that side. I put my hat and sunglasses on due to how bright it was, though I was then not able to feel the aircon as it was right above my head and if I had my hat on, I couldn't feel the air, so became quite hot. Due to being on the road for long periods of time, I feel these issues on the bus need to be looked at a bit more. We stopped for plenty of toilet/snack breaks at road houses/supermarkets. The accommodation was good for me, I chose the shared hostel accommodation. We didn't spend much time in the rooms. I was first concerned we may be sharing rooms with others outside of the tour although that was not the case. We shared with those on the tour, and the dorms were mixed. I think those with private rooms had a few reservations. It would have been nice to have been able to spend time at some of the places where we had our accommodation such as when we visited Monkey Mia, or Geraldton. We mainly got everywhere in the evenings, and left early morning. The trip is fast paced, and a full day at one, or both of these would have been great. I know this would add cost, and make the tour longer, but they seemed like lovely places to explore and almost everyone said they would have liked to have stayed at Monkey Mia for atleast a day. I personally loved the trip and seeing the different areas of Western Australia. It is not an area I heard too much about and I am glad I decided to do the tour. I would like to once again thank, Geoff for his fantastic work ethic, and showing us some wonderful scenery/wildlife in Western Australia. It was clear that he loves his job. I feel we all had a magical night on the beach while stargazing and seeing baby turtles. A night to remember! If you go to do this trip, make sure to take a fly net for your head. There are lots of them!

We had a great time and seen lots of tasmanias most wonderful places and delicious food. Tour guide and bus driving have been amazing, got lots of information. Management of accomodation and telling us where to go next and what time could be better. At some places could calculate more time for the hikes and the lookouts. Surprised the first day has been different people because you could book it as a day trip as well.

Best Beaches, Rainforest and Islands – 13 Day Flashpacker Adventure Tour

My boyfriend and I travelled from Brisbane to Cairns with Via travel two weeks ago and had the trip of a lifetime! The tour had the perfect balance of sight-seeing and relaxing so it really felt like a holiday while also seeing and experiencing some amazing places! It was fun, well-organised and stopped at all of the must-see places on the East Coast! Our tour guide, Jason, was friendly and informative and had an outrageous amount of knowledge on everything East Coast, from local knowledge, information about the wildlife, history and culture to restaurant and bar recommendations! His energy kept us going, even when we were tired, and made sure that everyone had a great time! Although everywhere we visited was amazing, some of the highlights for me were Magnetic Island (our favourite!!), which gave us the chance to see koalas, wallabies and lots of wildlife up close and in their natural habitats, snorkelling the Great Barrier Reef, where we saw incredible aquatic life and coral (an absolute must do!!) and our Indigenous culture experience with Kuku Yalanji tours where we were completely out of our comfort zone but learned so much and got a real insight into local culture. We absolutely loved the small tour group size too, which allowed us to get to know everyone really well within a couple of days and make friends from all corners of the world! The group dinners and nights out that we had were so much fun! Whether you're a nature enthusiast, adventure seeker, or simply looking to explore the beauty of the East Coast, this tour with Via travel is a must-do experience and one that I will be recommending to all of my friends!!

Eyre Peninsula Adventure Tour

Eyre Peninsula Adventure

Excellent tour apart from ScotDesco experience which was a great disappointment. Virtually no activities and accommodation poor. Gawler Mountains tour with Geoff was excellent, great scenery and knowledgeable commentary. Arid Gardens and sculptures very educational. Head of the Bight and Nullarbor touring very interesting. The Big Farmer sculpture at Wudinna is without doubt the best big thing in Australia. Murphy’s Haystacks were exceptional unique rock formations. Our driver guide Simon went out of his way to make sure we enjoyed our adventure.

What people love about Australia Solo Tours

I did this 4-day tour and I really enjoyed it. Jens, the guide, as well as all participants were very nice and warmhearted. I felt like I travelled with new friends. There were only 5 people in our group. I totally recommend this tour that includes amazing spots and sceneries. We were also lucky to see many animals (koalas, kangaroos, emus, fox, etc.).
Cool group, great guide, some long drives. Would need a driver and a guide A flight from Byron Bay to avoid 2 long drives on the bus
A great tour with an excellent driver/guide, Carlos, full of information, well organized and sensitive to our needs. Lots of wonderful places to see and experience from sunrise to sunset. Long bus rides at times and a full bus so little room to stretch out. But worth traveling the distances. Highly recommend the one way tour and fly out from Exmouth

Excellent trip

I found the overall trip excellent. I believe Diane's professionalism, inclusive personality and ability to relate to all contributed to this. She worked to ensure the group was cohesive without individuals impinging on the personal space of others etc. a good skill to have and one she applied effectively. Kate, Canada/Alaska

Fantastic value for money

Fantastic value for money paid. Russell our guide is an asset to your company... he was fantastic! Overall the trip was magical from start to finish. Well done Two's a Crowd ... the best trip ever. Barbara, Canada/Alaska

Fantastic first solo trip

I had a fantastic trip. Absolutely loved Canada and Alaska. It's the first time I have travelled solo and was pleasantly surprised to find a bunch of people that all got on so well. Diane our host was great. She did a good job of getting us altogether for meals, excursions, shopping trips etc. I liked that she quietly got things done without being loud or "in-your-face". She was good at being one of us as well as our leader. Wendy, Canada/Alaska

Good balance of activities and spare time

Had a great time. Good mixture of organised activities and spare time. Diane was an excellent tour host. Russell the tour guide was great, very knowledgeable and personable with his insights into growing up and living in Canada. Sharon, Canada/Alaska

Well organised trip with an excellent host

Great holiday

What a great trip! I experienced so much and participated in all that was offered. I had read and reviewed as much as time allowed me but was not prepared for what the trip gave me and that is a better understanding of the beautiful people of both countries. - Lesley on Vietnam/Cambodia

In good company

I thought the suggestions for optional things to do, in the "free" time were very good. So good, we really ended up with very little free time. So much to do! - Mary on Vietnam

The Best Solo Travel Tours For Over 50 and Seniors in Australia

As much as I love travelling around Australia alone, I’d recommend visiting many places in Australia on tours. Certain regions are hard to reach or bring complications that aren’t worth dealing with. With an Australian solo travel tour for those over 50, you don’t have to worry about a thing. Sit back and enjoy the experience.

Table of Contents

Why go on a Group Tour For over 50 in Australia?

Exploring Australia on Tour is part of any travel solo in the BIG country. While Travelling Solo in Australia is the most exciting thing you can do, it can sometimes be challenging, even for the most experienced soloist.

Reasons to join small group tours for seniors in Australia 50+

There are many good reasons for going on group tours if you are single and over 50. Here are the three main positive reasons for going on tour in Australia:

  • Many single travellers after 50 prefer joining organised guided tours to travelling alone in Australia. It comes with no work since the tour company takes all the work off you and they plan, organise and look after every aspect of the trip.
  • Seniors and retired solo travellers want to get to know new people and love travelling with a small group of like-minded travellers. It also offers an opportunity to break from a solo adventure in Australia. And create a bond with people of the same age group, which may turn into friendships.
  • The opportunity to see remote places : some remote regions in Australia can only be accessed by local tour operators and indigenous people who can guarantee the conservation of those fragile ecosystems.

How to choose the best-guided tours in Australia for seniors and 50+

When choosing the right tour for your 50+ adventure travel in Australia, I recommend using comparison websites Get Your Guide (for day trips) or TourRadar (for multi-day trips). Check what the tours include and don’t and whether they match your group size and travel style criteria. Also, read reviews on social media or TripAdvisor before booking a tour for an honest assessment of the experience other travellers had.

The Australian Outback is one of those places where you’re better off going on a guided tour. The Outback isn’t just a single region in Australia. Instead, it’s a name for the remote areas with little population and overwhelming nature. It covers about 75% of the country, so there are plenty of opportunities for an Australian Outback Tour from any large city. The Outback is a destination that’s hard or impossible to explore on your own, especially if you don’t have any 4WD experience. If you book just one tour during your trip, this should be it.

Outback Tours in Central Australia (Red Centre)

For many people, the Australian Outback is a synonym for the Red Centre . You might imagine a remote destination, and it is, but because of Australia’s symbol, Ayer’s Rock, you don’t even need a 4WD to get to Uluru from Alice Springs . Going on a tour in the Red Centre will allow you to dive deeply into the Aboriginal culture and the wilderness of King’s Canyon and the West MacDonnell Ranges. Here are the Uluru Tours we recommend:

Uluru Tours

Uluru, the gorgeous monolith known as Ayers Rock, might be Australia’s most famous symbol. On a day tour, you’ll watch the sunset over Uluru and admire the indigenous paintings at Kata Tjuta Cultural Centre. On more extended tours, you’ll also explore Kings Canyon and the West MacDonnell Ranges.

Uluru Guided Trek Of Ayers Rock Base (day trip)

5 Days Outback Highlights (Yulara/Yulara)

Red Centre & Uluru Explorer (Yulara/Alice Springs, 6 days)

Larapinta Trek (West MacDonnell Ranges)

I recommend joining a small-group guided tour to make the Larapinta Trek, a 223 km long trail from Alice Springs to Mount Sonder—one of the best walking experiences in the world through the rugged desert landscape.

Classic Larapinta Trek (Alice Springs/return 6 days)

Outback Adventure from Darwin to Uluru (Darwin/Uluru 9 days)

North West Australia Kimberley Tours

One of the most impressive Outback adventures in Australia is the Kimberley . It’s almost impossible to explore this area alone, even if you are an expert four-wheel driver. And even then, there’s always a significant risk of damaging the rental car or getting flat tyres (not uncommon when driving in Australia ). Tours are the better option here, ranging from shorter 5-day trips to extended tours that take nearly a month. I went on an 8-day epic camping trip crossing the Kimberley from Broome to Kununurra .

Kimberley Off-Road Adventure Darwin Broome (Darwin/Broome; 10 days)

Kimberley Complete Tour (Broome/Broome; 15 days)

Western Australia Tours

Outback tours in Western Australia are typically overland from Perth to Exmouth or Broome . Along the way, there’s time to explore the many beautiful sights of the region.

Tours From Perth

Perth To Exmouth Explorer Tour  (Perth return, 7 days)

Perth To Exmouth Coral Coaster Tour (one way, 6 days)

Perth to Broome Overland Adventure (Perth, one way, 10 days)

Monkey Mia on the central coast of WA, is a part of the World Heritage-listed Shark Bay. It’s famous for its unique encounters with wild dolphins. A natural attraction is the Francois Peron NP, the marine safaris, Dirk Hartog Island, where the Europeans first set foot on Australia in 1616 and the stromatolites, one of the world’s oldest living lifeforms.

Perth to Monkey Mia Coastal Loop (4 days)

South Australia Outback Tours

(this is the heading H3 plus the text below, it goes into a side-wide block).

South Australia is home to some of the best outback tours in Australia. From 4WD safaris through desert terrain to hiking and camping in national parks, Adelaide offers a good base for all kinds of adventures.

Flinders Ranges Outback Tour

Flinders Ranges is one of the most ancient Outback areas in Australia. With breathtaking scenery and unique wildlife, it is the perfect destination for an Outback adventure in Australia. There’s so much to do here that I recommend booking a multi-day tour that welcomes 50+ seniors. I went on a 3-day Flinders Ranges adventure for a journey through some of the most spectacular landscapes of Australia, including the iconic Wilpena Pound and some interesting rock art sites.

Flinders Ranges Eco Safari Adventure (Adelaide/Adelaide; 8 days)

Eyre Peninsula & Flinders Ranges adventure (Adelaide/Adelaide; 6 days)

The Eyre Peninsula, located on the southern coast of Australia, is a must-see for solo travellers over 50 looking for an adventure. The peninsula’s rugged coastline and pristine beaches offer plenty of exploration opportunities. Whale watching, playing with sea lions or cage diving with sharks, it’s all about the ocean wildlife in this region. You can self-drive the legendary Eyre Highway from Adelaide to Perth (crossing Nullarbour on the way) or join a small group tour to combine the Peninsula with the Flinders Ranges.

Eyre Peninsula adventure (Adelaide/Adelaide; 9 days)

Northern Australia Tours (Darwin area)

In the far north of Australia, where the Outback meets the ocean and the rainforest, you have spectacular waterfalls, rugged mountain ranges and deep gorges. Darwin is the capital city of Northern Australia and the perfect base to explore this part of the country called the Top End.

Although you can explore this remote region independently, you won’t be able to access many sights without a 4WD. If you’re uncomfortable driving one, here are the best trips to join as a group tour: Then 3 columns: 1. Kakaud N.P + Arhnem, 2. Litchfield. 3. Nitmiluk.

Kakadu National Park

Kakadu is the most well-known National Park in the Top End of the Northern Territory and a UNESCO World Heritage site. It’s one of the most spectacular places in the country and offers a combination of extraordinary nature and rich Aboriginal culture. Although day tours are available, I recommend spending at least a couple of nights because of the larger size of the park and the many sights.

Remember that many places in Kakadu aren’t accessible during the wet season. Read more from my 3-day Kakadu Camping Tour . A trip to Kakadu National Park is often combined with a visit to Litchfield NP or Nitmiluk NP. Here are tours that I recommend taking if you plan to visit these places.

Kakadu, Katherine Gorge and Tiwi Island (Darwin/Darwin; 3 days)

4-day Kakadu Outback trip (Darwin/Darwin; 4 days)

Kakadu, Litchfield & Billabong Cruise (Darwin/Darwin; 5 days)

Litchfield National Park Tours

Litchfield is a National Park in Australia’s Top End located about 1,5 hours from Darwin. Its compact size makes it perfect for day trips to waterfalls, rockpools, and impressive giant termite mounds.

Litchfield & Jumping Crocodile Cruise (Darwin/Darwin; day trip)

Kakadu & Litchfield 4WD Camping Tour (Darwin/Darwin; 3 days)

Arnhem Land Tours

Arnhem Land is a bit of a hidden gem in Australia’s Top End region. Not many tourists make it here, but that doesn’t mean Arnhem Land isn’t worth a visit. Arnhem Land can be visited from Jabiru and is home to the Yolngu people. You need a permit to visit this vast wilderness area, so I recommend booking a tour to explore the rock art of Injalak Hill with an Aboriginal guide.

Arnhem Land from Jabiru (Jabiru/Jabiru; day trip)

Top End and Arnhem Land adventure (Darwin/Darwin; 5 days)

Nitmiluk National Park Tours

The Nitmiluk National Park was formerly known as the Katherine Gorge National Park because the gorge is its most famous sight. You can discover the region through bushwalks, boat tours and scenic flights. The park is often combined with the other highlights of the Top End region.

Jatbula Trail (Darwin/Darwin; 6 days)

Non-Outback Australian Tours For Seniors And Over 50s

Tours in South Eastern Australia are the perfect way to explore this vast and rugged region. Many Australia Tours can be done as escapes from Melbourne .

Great Ocean Road Tours

The Great Ocean Road is an iconic Australian road trip that takes visitors along the breathtaking southeastern coast from the surf capital Torquay to Warrnambool. You’ll stop at the famous Twelve Apostles viewpoint and the Loch Ard Gorge, but there are many more sights along the way.

If a  Great Ocean Road as a self-drive is not your thing, a small group tour allows you to discover the region with an experienced guide who can provide interesting stories and insights about the area. I also recommend it if you’re uncomfortable driving or looking to go on a day trip from Melbourne.

Great Ocean Road & Wildlife tour (Melbourne/Melbourne; day trip)

2-day Great Ocean Road Tour (Melbourne/Melbourne; 2 days)

Ultimate Great Ocean Road tour (Melbourne/Melbourne; 4 days)

The Grampians National Park

The Grampians National Park is one of South Eastern Australia’s most spectacular natural environments. Located in the western part of Victoria, the park is known for its majestic sandstone mountains, rugged landscapes and diverse wildlife.

There are many walking trails, including the Grampian Peaks Trail, a challenging 160-kilometre track that traverses some of the most spectacular scenery in the park. Going with a guide will allow you to spot the local wildlife more easily, and you’ll be able to visit the best spots all in one go.

Grampians great wilderness escape (Melbourne/Melbourne; day trip)

Overland Melbourne to Adelaide with Grampians & Great Ocean Road (Melbourne/Adelaide; 2 days)

Grampian Peaks Trail (Grampians/Grampians; 4 days).

Tasmania Tours

Tasmania is an island off the southeastern coast of Australia with natural beauty like no other. I recommend visiting Tasmania on a 10-day self-drive , but booking a guided tour to the island is an excellent alternative if you’re uncomfortable driving around or short on time. The main sights include Franklin River, Wineglass Bay, Russell Falls and encountering the iconic Tasmanian Devil.

Highlights of Tasmania (Hobart/Hobart; 6 days)

Cradle Mountain Overland Track (Launceston/Launceston; 6 days)

Tasmania Complete (Hobart/Hobart; 12 days)

Queensland Tours

Queensland has so many places to discover that I recommend going on a guided tour to make the most of your time. It’s a versatile destination with red-hued deserts, tropical rainforest and dramatic mountain ranges. Both Cairns and Brisbane serve as hubs for the region.

Daintree Rainforest

The Daintree rainforest is part of the Wet Tropics of Queensland World Heritage Area. It’s the largest continuous tropical rainforest in Australia, covering an area of approximately 1200 square kilometres, and it’s also one of the world’s oldest continuously surviving rainforests, with parts of it estimated to be over 180 million years old. Although driving alone in some parts of the national park is possible, you’ll need a lot of driving experience. Not to mention that only a small part is accessible with a regular car. I don’t recommend visiting the Daintree Rainforest by yourself. You can visit Daintree on a day trip from Cairns or Port Douglas, and most tours will also include a visit to Cape Tribulation and the Mossman Gorge.

However, I visited the area during a 2-day four-wheel adventure from Cairns to Cooktown , which I can recommend if you’re not up to driving a four-wheel van.

Daintree Rainforest Tours

Daintree & Cape Tribulation adventure (Cairns/Cairns; 8 days)

Brisbane to the Daintree discovery with Atherton Tablelands (Brisbane/Cairns; 12 days)

East Coast Tours

Australia’s East Coast spans almost 3000 km from Sydney to Cairns . Imagine tropical beaches, rainforests, the Great Barrier Reef and spectacular islands such as Fraser Island and the Whitsundays. While I love self-driving this route because of the sheer amount of things to do, I recommend a guided tour if you want to pack as many sights into your itinerary as possible.

Here are some of the best Australian East Coast Tours

Tropical islands and rainforest (Gold Coast/Cairns; 9 days)

East Coast islands and rainforest (Sydney/Cairns; 12 days)

OZ East Coast Adventure (Brisbane/Cairns, 20 days)

Fraser Island Rainforest Eco-Hike (Fraser Island/Fraser Island, 3 days)

Remote Fraser Island Tour with kayaking (Hervey Bay/Hervey Bay; day trip)

Blue Mountains Tours from Sydney

If you’re visiting Sydney , you should not miss the chance to tour the Blue Mountains. This UNESCO heritage site is home to the stunning Three Sisters rock formation, and the view of Wentworth Falls is worth the mildly challenging walk beforehand. If you’re short on time, Scenic World offers an excellent introduction to the stunning scenery in the Blue Mountains.

Walk the Blue Mountains (Sydney/Sydney; 4 days)

New South Wales Wineries & Countryside (Sydney/Sydney; 8 days)

Australia Day Tours for single travellers over 50

Most cities and regions that can be visited on a day trip are easy to do independently. But organised day trips in Australia for those over 50 are fun and convenient. There are so many activities in Australia that I cannot mention them all. That’s why I have created this list of the day tours I have experienced during my travels in Australia (which I think are worth the recommendation).

Wine Tours of Australia

Wine lovers won’t be disappointed when visiting Australia. With over 60 wine regions across the country, you can sample some of the best wines in the world, no matter your destination. With the help of a guide, you can learn about Australia’s winemaking history while you visit boutique cellars, sample the finest wines, and enjoy the often stunning views. Combine with a food tour to try local produce or a bike tour to add an active touch.

Margaret River Wine Tour

One of the best wine & food tours I had while exploring solo South Western Australia . This is the tour if you want a passionate, knowledgeable local to show you the Margaret River Wine Region and the best local produce.

Barossa Valley Food Experience

I went on this day trip from Adelaide. I enjoyed my time, visited five wineries and learned much about the Barossa region from the tour guide.

Swan Valley Wine & Food Tour

The Swan Valley is one of Western Australia’s oldest and most beautiful wine regions. It’s the perfect destination for a day trip from Perth, only 25 minutes away. I took the half-day food & wine tour, but for the complete experience, go for the full-day tour and visit some of the best wineries in the region, such as Sandlefords and Mandoon Estate.

Cruising day tours

If you like being out on the water, a cruise or boat tour is a beautiful way to spend the day.

Lake Argyle River Cruise

This is another great day tour in the Australian Outback. Excellent if you love sunsets and want to explore the Eastern Kimberley.

An Eco-Snorkeling Tour on the Great Barrier Reef

I enjoyed this kids-free snorkelling tour in a small group of 12. Starting from Port Douglas, we headed out on a beautiful eco-catamaran to Low Isle, where we formed two guided groups of people and snorkelled close to the shore. The sailing trip included sunset and champagne.

Adventure day tours

I’m a big fan of adventurous activities, and Australia is the right place to indulge in them. There are just so many fun things to do! Here are my favourite experiences.

A scenic flight over the Bungle Bungles

This is not a cheap day tour, but if you are on a tight schedule from Kununurra, you can visit the Bungle Bungles on a day with a flight + walking tour of Purnunulu National Park.

Ballooning on the Gold Coast .

This was my second hot-air balloon, and I loved to soar over the Gold Coast.

Sydney Helicopter Scenic Flight

This is a must-have experience. However, it’s not ideal for solo travellers to Australia since these flights start from 2-3 people. So, if you are lucky to get paired with someone else, you can fly.

Melbourne Hot-Air Balloon Ride

This was my first experience with a hot-air balloon. Waking up at 3.30 am is not fun, but it’s worth the breathtaking views you get at sunrise over Melbourne and the bay.

4WD Road Trip from Cairns to Cooktown

One of the highlights of my trip to North Tropical Queensland was this 4 4-wheel drive to Cooktown. It’s one of the most challenging 4WD drives in the world, so definitely book a tour for this!

Frequently Asked Questions about Australian Tours for Seniors 50+

How do I travel to Australia for the first time?

If you’re visiting Australia long term and for the first time, I highly recommend booking guided tours to get a good overview of the area you’ll be exploring. This way, you’ll save time and hassle by having all the information and details taken care of. If you’re comfortable renting a car and driving, that’s another great way to solo travel Australia for over 50s.

Is it cheaper to travel on a tour or alone?

Australia is known to be expensive regardless of whether you travel on a tour or alone. Still, depending on the destination and the accommodation type, a guided group tour may be cheaper than travelling solo. However, I don’t recommend investing more than 20 to 30% of your time in guided tours to leave some room for exploration on your own.

Is Australia solo travel friendly?

Australia is a solo travel-friendly destination for female travellers , regardless of age. It’s a safe country and easy to travel around in. Remember that it won’t be cheap as you’ll often have to pay a single surcharge for accommodation and the price of your rental car on your own.

What is the best city in Australia to travel solo to?

There are many places in Australia for solo travellers especially after retirement . The primary destinations are Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Cairns, Darwin, Hobart, Perth, and Adelaide are great hubs for exploring their respective regions. My favourite is Melbourne because there’s so much to do in and around the city for solo female travellers.

What is the best travel company for over 50+?

The best travel companies for over 50+ in Australia are G Adventures, AAT Kings and Wild Women Journeys for gender-specific Australian tours for seniors travelling alone. What is the best season to tour Australia?

What the best season is to tour Australia depends on your destination. Summer (Dec-Feb) is the busiest travel season, but visiting Tasmania and the East Coast is great. Winter (Jun-Sep) is the perfect time to visit Darwin and the surrounding outback, North Tropical Queensland, Central Australia and Western Australia. I recommend visiting during the shoulder season (spring or autumn) to avoid crowds.

Final thoughts: Solo travel tours over 50 Australia

Australia is a top place for solo travellers over 50 . Whether you explore the country independently or join guided tours, there are plenty of opportunities to discover unique experiences in and around the cities. You have unlimited adventures, from eco-snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef to exploring the Kimberley and a hot air balloon ride over Melbourne.  With my tips and resources above, I hope you can find a fantastic tour experience that fits your needs perfectly.

Adventure holidays for single travellers over 50

The world's a big place - where are you yet to explore? Our  Cultural Discovery  group adventure trips allow you to discover a new destination beyond just its tourist attractions - you'll learn about its history and culture through visits to historic sites and experiences, as well as meeting, and often even staying with, local people or tribes. Wherever you choose to go, you'll be made to feel welcome and truly at home with friendly like-minded people, and all at a pace that suits you. Cuba is one of our most popular destinations, particularly for solo travellers over 50, and it's so easy to see why. Whether you take our faster-paced  Cuba Libre!  group adventure holiday, or take a slower pace while you see  The Best of Western Cuba , this colourful and captivating country will amaze you at every corner, with vintage cars and rum bars lining the streets of vibrant Havana, pastel-coloured historic buildings and rich culture in Santiago De Cuba, and the story of Che Guevara to be discovered in Santa Clara. Should you wish to adventure a little closer to home, our moderately and relaxed pace group adventure trips to Europe and Turkey could be just the ticket. It may be the world's smallest continent, but Europe offers some of the richest experiences to be found anywhere on the globe - from admiring the  Highlights of Andalucia , to immersing yourself in the historical  Treasures of Turkey . If you're looking to be truly dazzled on your solo adventure on one of our group trips, let the magic of Iceland and its natural wonders amaze you on our Land of the Midnight Sun  trip, or seize the chance to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights on our winter itinerary - surely an experience that everyone has on their Bucket List.

Solo Travel Over 50: Embrace New Adventures on Your Terms

Janice Waugh

July 18, 2023 by Janice Waugh

female solo traveler over 50 hiking

Solo travel over 50 and you will find new interests, gain new confidence, and discover new ways to manage a major life transition.

More people over 50 are traveling solo than ever before.

More than a quarter of the respondents to our annual reader survey are over 50. The percentage is similar on Facebook where we host the Solo Travel Society with over 270,000 participants. Dozens, sometimes thousands of people engage with other solo travelers there every day.

Whether you're in a relationship or are fabulously single, solo travel delivers so much more than the typical travel experience. And whether you are traveling independently or with a group, solo travel does not necessarily mean that you are alone. Taking a cooking class, a walking tour, or attending a meetup on a subject you are passionate about are all great activities for solo travelers. They can connect you to people of all ages from all over the world.

But before we get into the best reasons to travel solo over 50, let's look at the major life transition you may be facing, some of the questions that are arising now, and why this might be the perfect time of your life to head out on your own.

a yoga retreat can give space to reflect on major life transitions

Table of Contents

Travel Solo to Navigate a Major Life Transition

If you're over 50, you are likely facing a major life transition. As a 50+ you may:

  • be content with your career and no longer looking for challenges there.
  • have adult children who are no longer at home.
  • be part of the sandwich generation with parents and children requiring your attention.
  • have a relationship status that is complicated.

In the many-faceted world of those over 50, life is changing. You are facing a major life transition and it may not be clear what you're transitioning to.

Where will you redirect your energy?

Perhaps you're experiencing one or a number of the situations below. See how solo travel can help.

  • Have you been in the same relationship for decades? Is it getting a little tired? Take separate vacations and return with lots to say to each other.
  • Is your spouse or partner uninterested in travel? Going solo is your answer. See the world and return refreshed to your relationship.
  • Have your kids just left the nest? Then it’s time to find out who you are again. You can’t really do this with a companion who knows you and expects you to act in certain ways. Get away. Travel alone and rediscover yourself.
  • Are you suddenly single, either by divorce or loss? Solo travel is a real confidence builder , a great way to make a comeback.
  • Are you concerned that people at work see you as old? Head out on a solo adventure and people will quickly adjust their attitudes.
  • Is work dull with little hope of things changing? Solo travel over 50 will inject some challenge into life.
  • Is money tight? Solo travel can be inexpensive. It’s much easier to save on hostels, hospitality stays, great deals, and cheap flights when you travel alone.
  • Do you have health problems? Stress is a major contributor to most health problems. Plan a solo holiday where you set the schedule and take a break from the stress in your life.
  • Did you retire early? Do you have time to travel but family and friends don’t? No need to sit around and wait for them. Go solo and enjoy.
  • Is it time for change? Travel alone, reflect, analyze, and explore your possibilities without the influence of others.

Best Reasons to Travel Solo Over 50

Maybe we all need a little time to ourselves, to make decisions, discover our strengths, and experience more autonomy. Maybe we all need to travel solo.

  • Enjoy your freedom.  If you have spent most of your life surrounded by and responsible to others this is your chance to be responsible to no one but yourself. Go to bed when you like. Get up when you like. Eat, drink, wander, explore what you like. It's all up to you.
  • Gain confidence from that independence . Whether you're traveling solo on a tour or independently, there is a confidence-building element to solo travel for having jumped into a somewhat unknown situation on your own.
  • Discover who you are when you’re not meeting the demands of a spouse or children . When responding to everyone else, who has time to get to know oneself? Solo travel over 50 gives you that opportunity. Do what you couldn’t afford or didn’t have time to do when younger.
  • Explore new interests.  Solo travel can be a gateway to new interests. Whether it's music or hiking or discovering like I did last month that I like champagne, try something new. Maybe you wouldn't go to a bar by yourself at home but on the road in a town like Nashville , how could you possibly stay in with all that music around you? Perhaps  hiking is not part of your lifestyle but if you find yourself in the Lake District of England you may just find a new love. Solo travel is a chance to try something new.
  • Model a different kind of aging. I find that many people in their twenties and thirties are really curious about me. They seem to look at me as the kind of person they want to be when they get to my age – which, in their mind is very, very old. They see me as bold and welcome me into their conversations. And they often tell me that I am not like their parents at all. It seems I'm an alternative model for their future.
  • Expand your world with cross-generational conversations . Talking with people younger and older than me breaks me out of my limited world and gives me a better understanding of the issues faced by others. And they amuse me. I remember walking down a street in Italy with an American man in his twenties. He turned to look back at a beautiful young woman who had passed us and said to me, “I love Italian women. They have great junk in the trunk.” Really! Whatever I think about his comment, to have such access to young attitudes is wonderful, if not curious and sometimes disturbing.
  • Enjoy the respect age receives in other countries . My hair is grey. Given the courtesy I receive in some countries I have thought that I present as older than I am. Then I realized that it's actually about age being respected more in other cultures. Traveling on a train in India a young man wouldn't dream of moving me from my seat even though I was willing (insisting) and had, by means of a seat shift, taken his. No, his response was, “but you are our guest.” I suspect someone younger may not have been treated quite so well.
  • Reboot your life that may otherwise be on autopilot . Feeling a bit bored? Need to shake things up a bit? Need new stimulation? Solo travel can give you this. Fulfill lifelong dreams that may not be shared with a partner. Many partners take separate vacations to pursue their personal dreams. Go for it.

Different Options for Traveling Alone

There are two basic ways to travel solo.

  • Independent solo travel
  • Solo travel on a tour

Independent Solo Travel

Independent solo travel is when you plan, navigate, and negotiate everything yourself. The downside is all that work and responsibility if you don't enjoy it. The upside is freedom and independence. It's exhilarating! Most of what we write here is about independent solo travel. Here's a guide to over 500 posts on Solo Traveler.

Solo Travel on a Tour or Cruise

This is solo travel in a group where the planning and organizing is all taken care of for you. Every day you have a guide and the group heads out to another activity. No fear of being lonely, eating alone, or your safety. The tour takes care of everything.

Most companies organize tours and have a few solos on them. There are a few companies that just cater to solo travelers. Check out our  Deals  page for our exclusive list of solo-friendly tours with no or very low single supplements from multiple companies. You can also receive our monthly Newsletter and Advisory of Deals by email. Just click here and sign up for the Solo Traveler Newsletter.

Solo Travel Safety Considerations

Every week, people reach this blog by using the search term “solo travel after 50.” These words are frequently paired with concern for safety. There seems to be some concern about age and solo travel. From my perspective, there shouldn’t be.

Being 65, I think I'm qualified to address this issue. And, as you might imagine, I believe that it is not only safe to travel solo after fifty but also, for all the reasons above, important.

That said, at a certain age we become more aware of safety issues. When we were young, optimism prevailed. Concerns were tossed into the wind. Not so much now. So, here I have a few safety tips specifically for older solo travelers.

  • Get travel insurance . If you're over 65 this can be a problem. It gets more expensive the older you are but it can also save your bacon. Read how travel insurance has saved me a number of times in  A Complete Guide to Travel Insurance for Solo Travelers.
  • Put medications in your carry-on luggage . Eliminate the possibility of being separated from your daily medications should your baggage go astray. Pack all medications in your carry-on. It's always recommended to keep all meications in their original containers from the pharmacy. Read  How to Get Through an Airport by Yourself with Ease
  • Request special services in advance . I've walked more than a kilometer from my plane to the airport exit. For some, this may be too long a trek. Consider your abilities and request any special support you need a few days in advance of your flight.
  • Travel light . There's nothing worse than being in a position where you can't get help and you can't manage your bags on your own. Read  Bare Minimum Packing: Here’s Your Packing List .
  • Wear quality shoes . Balance starts to go after a certain age. It's a subtle process. Not obvious at first but, under the right (or should I say, wrong) circumstances, a twisted ankle, or worse, can easily happen. I gave up my beloved Merrell sandals for my more stable Eccos a couple of years ago.
  • Have back-up glasses . I lost a pair hiking once. It's simple to do. Best to have a backup pair.
  • Keep the bling at home . At this stage of life you may have some beautiful jewelry but that doesn't mean you have to take it traveling. Keep it at home where it's safe and you won't attract attention to yourself.
  • Don't promote the fact that you're away on social media . It may be exciting to be going on a solo adventure but don't announce it to the world. You want your home to be safe as you travel as well.

Great Destination Ideas for 50+ Travelers

In reality, the best destination for any solo traveling boomer (the baby boomer generation is generally defined as people born from 1946 to 1964) is up to them. You might want to climb Mount Everest and if you're up to the challenge, it's a great destination for you. So what can I offer in terms of destinations? How can I generalize? Here are trips that just about anyone can enjoy and they don't involve learning another language.

  • Spectacular Western Canada.  I traveled Western Canada by plane, train, and car a few years ago. The grandeur of the mountains, the friendliness of the people, great hikes, and small towns made it a great trip. It was simple to plan and affordable. You can read about it here:  Western Canada Itinerary: Top Things to See and Do  and  British Columbia by Train: Budget or Luxury. It’s Your Choice.
  • The United Kingdom.  The UK has so much to offer. The culture is different but the language is the same, making it interesting and easy. London is a top destination for most of us. I find the center of the city to be very safe. I've walked at night and had no problem. Read  Solo Travel London on a Budget: Top Tips for Free and Cheap and  Best Places to Stay in London: Accommodation for Solo Travelers . I'll never tire of Northern Ireland's glens and its dramatic Causeway Coastal Route. Read  Solo Travel Northern Ireland: Tips for Belfast and Beyond .
  • Road trip!  I love a road trip. I especially love a road trip along the coast and through a rugged landscape and one that drops me into small towns and villages to meet locals. I've taken two such road trips in Canada, one in New Brunswick and the other in Nova Scotia. Both provinces are very accessible by car for those who live on the eastern seaboard of the United States. Read  15 Great Solo Road Trips: All Solo Traveler Tested .
  • An educational holiday.  I set a goal for myself to become fluent in French. I have improved greatly by using holiday time for French immersion classes in Quebec City and Lyon, France.
  • A river cruise.  A river cruise covers many destinations in one trip with only one unpacking and repacking involved. That makes it easy. Read 12 River Cruise Tips for Solo Travelers: How to Make the Most of Your Journey .
  • Walking trips . I really enjoyed my walking trip on the Isle of Skye . On the path, I would stop, take in the view, and find a huge smile stretching across my face. I smile a lot but smiling just because the air and view and exertion are so wonderful is not part of my regular day. I really suggest walking trips. You can be as adventurous as you like. I encourage you to read this post by Susanne, a reader from Austria:  Solo Travel Destination: The West Highland Way, Scotland .
  • Creative travel . Creative travel is travel for the express purpose of learning something new. It may be cooking or a language, dance or painting. Creative travel helps you enter your destination through the local culture and by meeting locals and learning from them. Read  Creative Travel Tips: Discover More of a Destination and Yourself.

Some Additional Solo Travel Tips

Traveling solo late in your second act (or maybe in your third) is a wonderful experience. Whether you go for luxury or budget travel, it's all available to you. I'd like you to remember a couple of things.

  • Others will welcome the excitement of you . You are, by the mere fact that you're traveling solo, adventurous to many. You liven up an evening for people. I have enjoyed many a coffee or meal with travelers and locals who welcomed me into their conversation. I enrich them as they enrich me.
  • Hostels are not just for the young . Once referred to as youth hostels, today they are just hostels. Some, like the YHA hostels, are still non-profit but others are part of hostel chains. Yes, just like boomers, hostels have grown up. As the hostel clientele of the 60s and 70s has matured, so have hostels. To get a sense of staying at hostels as a boomer, read  The Hostel Experience for Solo Travelers: What to Expect. How to Stay Safe .

And one final comment:  don't hesitate to return to places you visited when you were younger . One of the great benefits of solo travel over 50 is that the knowledge gained and life lived over the years will take you to a deeper understanding of a destination than you could possibly have had before.

Sharing is caring!

The perks of solo travel with Intrepid

A traveller smiling while drinking a glass of traditional mint tea in Marrakesh, Morocco

Authentic experiences with a local leader

Stuffy coaches, flag-touting tour guides and ‘seeing the sights’ isn’t our vibe. We prefer culturally-rich experiences – led by a local – that take you behind the scenes of a destination. Our itineraries are packed with unique insights into local life. We're talking hands-on pastry-making classes with local Macedonian women, watching a traditional dance performance on the sand dunes in Pushkar or sleeping in a lush eco-resort in the Amazon.

A group of travellers dancing on the deck of a small ship cruise in Greece

Small groups of ready-made friends

We’ve found that it’s not always about the places you go but the people you meet along the way. Our trips are designed for people of all ages and with all sorts of life stories. With an average group size of 10, you'll get to know each other beyond the pleasantries over long dinner conversations and shared experiences. With a little luck, the friendships you make on your trip may last long after you’ve unpacked your suitcase at home.

Safety, logistics and convenience

As exciting as travelling is, it often involves a fair bit of planning. While we're sure you're well equipped to handle any situation, the beauty of travelling with us means we'll do the heavy lifting and take care of the nitty-gritty details so you can focus on what you're here to do: travel! From navigating border crossings to booking bus tickets, bridging language barriers to cultural do's and don'ts, sit back and enjoy yourself while your leader takes care of everything.

Pick your own style of travel

We understand that people travel for different reasons. That’s why we’ve created a range of travel themes and styles to suit every Intrepid traveller. From our Basix style with simple accommodation and plenty of free time to our Premium trips featuring our best stays, experiences and leaders (with our Original and Comfort styles in between), choose what suits you and get ready for an unforgettable experience.

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip as a senior.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises). However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Who are Intrepid travellers?

Intrepid adventures are for travellers with a yearning to get off the beaten track. Whether you're travelling solo, with a group of friends, or are aged 18 or 70, there is an Intrepid adventure to suit your interests and comfort level. Each Intrepid adventure has a physical and cultural grading to help you decide if the trip is right for you. No special skills are required for most adventures, just a sense of adventure and a curiosity about the world. Even on our camping adventures no previous experience is required; our tents are easy to set up, even for first-time campers.

Are there age restrictions on your trips?

For the majority of our trips the minimum age is 15. An adult must accompany all children under the age of 18. Our Overland Adventures have a minimum age of 18. Younger children can join us on our Family trips and Short Break Adventures, but check each trip for its minimum age, which is located on the trip’s overview page on the website. Most of our trips don’t have a maximum age limit, but a Self-Assessment Form is required for all passengers 70 years and over.

How many people will be on my trip?

Good things come in small packages, which is why we keep our group sizes down. This means we’re small enough to remain flexible as we thread our way through communities without intimidating the locals. On most of our trips you’ll be part of an intimate group of 12-16 people, though our group sizes are on average 10 people. Our Overland trips are in purpose-built vehicles that can carry up to 24 travellers. Group sizes are displayed on each trip’s overview page on our website.

I’m travelling alone – is that OK?

This is the beauty of the Intrepid style of travel: many of our travellers join because they are travelling solo and want to meet and share experiences with like-minded people.

I have a disability – can I join an Intrepid trip?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. We ask that you carefully consider whether you are physically and mentally able to complete the itinerary you have chosen, recognising that on many trips you will be required to carry your own bags and use public transport.

Where we can we will make reasonable adjustments to the operation of our trips to facilitate the requirements of disabled travellers – such as booking ground floor accommodation, or having our leaders communicate important directions in writing as well as verbally. Many travellers with disabilities have been able to enjoy our trips by travelling with a friend or companion who can assist with specific needs. If joining a group trip is not practical we may be able to provide you with a private departure. Please contact our sales team for further information on any of our itineraries.

Learn more about accessible travel with Intrepid

Do I need to buy travel insurance?

Travel insurance is compulsory on all our trips if you’re travelling internationally. Minimum coverage may differ from trip to trip, so make sure you check the Travel Insurance section in your Essential Trip Information. You will not be permitted to join the group until your leader has sighted your insurance policy number and the insurance company's 24-hour emergency contact number – it’s really important there are no barriers to getting emergency assistance for you.

Will I have my own room?

It's your call. Rooming on our trips is organised on a twin-share basis, but most of our trips also have the option to pay an extra fee for your own room. Just let us know at the time of booking and we'll arrange it for you.

For twin-share rooms, we pair up solo travellers with another traveller of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. As a responsible tour operator, we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. In the case that your gender identity differs from what's indicated on your passport, please contact us so that we can discuss rooming options with you.

On a small selection of itineraries some accommodations are booked on an open-gender, multi-share basis. In those instances it will clearly be stated in your Essential Trip Information.

How does group time work?

Whether you’re travelling alone or with a partner, our trips have a set itinerary. But within that there’s time set aside for your own exploration (if you want to – no pressure). Depending on how you're feeling, you may want to have some downtime, ask your guide for a few tips then head out alone, or hang out with the group and see where the day takes you.

What makes a small group tour better than a coach tour?

The main difference between a small group tour and a coach tour is the size of the group; our tours have 10 travellers each (on average) while coaches can hold up to 60 people. This means that you'll never have to vie for your leader's attention on a small group tour because you'll automatically have it.

  • Deals for Senior Single Travel – Tours and Holidays

by Bronwyn White

solo travel deals

The landscape of solo travel has really changed over the last few years because travel companies have finally seen the solo traveller as a real ‘growth’ opportunity for their businesses.  We are really lucky to finally have a fairly wide choice of single travel options these days.

Single travel is no longer the domain of a few travellers, but a growing trend of empowered, mostly women who will not let having anyone to travel with fulfil their travel dreams!

Check out these companies that we consider to be ‘senior single travel friendly’.  They are companies who cater well to the single traveller.   If we haven’t travelled with them personally, we know others who have.  Or, have sold them confidently as a travel agent.

We have developed our own criteria:

  • Safety is a priority
  • Have a history in catering to the single traveller
  • Special programs in places – official or unofficially to make the solo traveller feel as comfortable as possible
  • They might offer great single deals.  They may always do this or offer deals intermittently. Some companies have great single deals as early bird specials or, at the other end of the scale as what the travel industry refers to as distressed capacity.  That is empty rooms or ‘bums on seats’ near to departure they are willing to sell at a discounted rate.  They often waiver the single supplement.
  • They may offer to find someone of the same sex to share a room with you.  This is commonly known in the travel industry as ‘share with a stranger’.

Companies that cater well to single travel.

G Adventures cater extremely well to single travellers.  For example, you may choose to share and they will match you with a fellow traveller of the same sex.  Or, if you wish to have your own room, some tours provide special single room pricing.

They run small groups tours to most corners of the globe to off the beaten track locations this means that the average group size is 10 and they take no more than 16.

You will encounter unique and local style accommodation and best of all, the costs are very reasonable.   They always have great specials, particularly the last minute.

Intrepid Travel like G Adventures runs small group tours and has assembled a selection of travel experiences that cater well to those singles who prefer not to be completely alone.

They’re not run-of-the-mill holidays typical of the larger tour companies.  Journeys range from the unexplored to the luxury and cater for many special interests, including cooking, music, painting and walking tours.  They also have a number of j ourneys that are exclusively for women.

I have met travellers who are truly evangelistic about their experiences with Intrepid.   Some women doing multiple tours back-to-back.

Evergreen Tours has made an enormous effort to capture the single travel market as a result, they have broadened their solo travel appeal. They also run a solo travel club that keeps you updated regularly on solo travel options, tours and offers.

Wendy Wu Tours has also created a program for single travellers promising travellers their own room with no single supplement.

Cosmos Tours is another well-known brand that offers solo travellers the flexibility of matching you with someone of the same sex to share a room.

Travel Tips for vacationers over 50 and single

T raveling as a single person over 50 can be an exciting and rewarding experience. Here are some travel tips to help you make the most of your vacation:

Choose destinations catering to solo travelers

Some destinations are more solo-friendly than others. Look for places that offer a good mix of attractions, activities, and social opportunities for solo travelers. Popular choices often include cities known for their culture, history, and vibrant social scenes.

Plan itinerary wisely

Choose activities that align with your hobbies or things you’ve always wanted to try. This will make your trip more enjoyable and allow you to meet like-minded individuals along the way.

Research accommodation options

Look for accommodations that cater to solo travelers. Hostels, guesthouses, and boutique hotels are often more social and provide opportunities to meet fellow travelers. Additionally, consider using platforms like Airbnb, which can offer more personalized and local experiences.

MORE TRAVEL TIPS

Join group tours

Group tours and activities are excellent opportunities to meet new people and share experiences. Look for tours specifically designed for solo travelers or small group tours that encourage interaction among participants. This can also alleviate some of the planning and logistics burdens.

Stay connected

Inform your family and friends about your travel plans and share your itinerary with them. Stay in touch regularly to keep them updated about your whereabouts.

Embrace technology

Utilize travel apps and websites to enhance your travel experience. Use apps for navigation, translation, and discovering local attractions and events.

Take necessary precautions to ensure your safety while traveling alone. Research the safety of your chosen destinations beforehand, follow local customs and laws, and trust your instincts. Avoid walking alone at night in unfamiliar or poorly lit areas and be cautious with your belongings.

Take care of your health

Prioritize your health during your trip. Visit a doctor before your departure to ensure you’re in good health for travel. Carry necessary medications, have travel insurance, and stay hydrated. Take breaks and listen to your body when it needs rest.

Enjoy your independence

Remember that traveling solo gives you the freedom to do what you want when you want. Embrace this independence, be open to new experiences, and enjoy the journey.

Remember, the key to a successful trip is to plan, stay open-minded, and embrace the adventure. Happy travels!

Day 1 / Stop 1 – The Red Square

  • Why it’s awesome: The Red Square is the most recognizable area in Moscow, it has mesmerizing architecture and centuries worth of history attached to its name.
  • Cost: Free to walk around, individual attractions in the square have separate fees.
  • Food nearby: Check out Bar BQ Cafe for friendly service and good food in a great location! The atmosphere is upbeat and they’re open 24/7!

The Red Square is Moscow’s historic fortress and the center of the Russian government. The origins of the square date back to the late 15th century, when Ivan the Great decided to expand the Kremlin to reflect Moscow’s growing power and prestige!

During the 20th century, the square became famous as the site for demonstrations designed to showcase Soviet strength. Visiting the Red Square today, you’ll find it teeming with tourists, who come to witness its magical architecture up close!

The Red Square

The square is the picture postcard of Russian tourism, so make sure to bring your camera when you visit! No matter the season, or the time of day, it’s delightfully photogenic!

It’s also home to some of Russia’s most distinguishing and important landmarks, which we’ve made sure to include further down in this itinerary. It’s an important center of Russia’s cultural life and one of the top places to visit in Moscow!

In 1990, UNESCO designated Russia’s Red Square as a World Heritage site. Visiting this historic site is a true bucket-list event and essential addition to your itinerary for Moscow!

Day 1 / Stop 2 – The Moscow Kremlin

  • Why it’s awesome: The Moscow Kremlin complex includes several palaces and cathedrals and is surrounded by the Kremlin wall. It also houses the principal museum of Russia (the Kremlin Armory).
  • Cost: USD $15.00
  • Food nearby: Bosco Cafe is a charming place to grat a casual bite to eat. They have excellent coffee and wonderful views of the Red Square and the Moscow Kremlin!

The iconic Moscow Kremlin , also known as the Kremlin museum complex, sits on Borovitsky Hill, rising above the Moscow River. It is a fortified complex in the center of the city, overlooking several iconic buildings in the Red Square!

It’s the best known of the Russian Kremlins – citadels or fortress’ protecting and dominating a city. During the early decades of the Soviet era, the Kremlin was a private enclave where the state’s governing elite lived and worked.

The Kremlin is outlined by an irregularly shaped triangular wall that encloses an area of 68 acres! The existing walls and towers were built from 1485 to 1495. Inside the Kremlin museum complex, there are five palaces, four cathedrals, and the enclosing Kremlin Wall with Kremlin towers.

The Armoury Chamber is a part of the Grand Kremlin Palace’s complex and is one of the oldest museums of Moscow, established in 1851. It showcases Russian history and displays many cherished relics. Definitely make sure to check out this museum while you’re here!

The Moscow Kremlin

The churches inside the Moscow Kremlin are the Cathedral of the Dormition, Church of the Archangel, Church of the Annunciation, and the bell tower of Ivan Veliki (a church tower).

The five-domed Cathedral of the Dormition is considered the most famous. It was built from 1475–1479 by an Italian architect and has served as a wedding and coronation place for great princes, tsars, and emperors of Russia. Church services are given in the Kremlin’s numerous cathedrals on a regular basis.

The Grand Kremlin Palace was the former Tsar’s Moscow residence and today it serves as the official workplace of the President of the Russian Federation (Vladimir Putin seems to have bagged that title for life) .

Insider Tip: The Kremlin is closed every Thursday! Make sure to plan this stop on your Moscow itinerary for any other day of the week!

Day 1 / Stop 3 – Lenin’s Mausoleum

  • Why it’s awesome: The mausoleum displays the preserved body of Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin .
  • Cost: Free!
  • Food nearby: Khinkal’naya is a charming Georgian restaurant with vaulted ceilings and exposed brick. It’s a popular place with locals and right next to the Red Square!

Lenin’s Mausoleum, also known as Lenin’s Tomb, is the modernist mausoleum for the revolutionary leader Vladimir Lenin. It’s located within the Red Square and serves as the resting place for the Soviet leader! His preserved body has been on public display since shortly after his death in 1924.

It’s located just a few steps away from the Kremlin Wall and is one of the most controversial yet popular Moscow attractions!

Admission is free for everyone, you’ll only need to pay if you need to check a bag. Before visitors are allowed to enter the mausoleum, they have to go through a metal detector first. No metal objects, liquids, or large bags are allowed in the mausoleum!

Lenins Mausoleum

Expect a line to enter the building, and while you’re inside the building, you’ll be constantly moving in line with other visitors. This means you won’t be able to spend as long as you’d like viewing the mausoleum, but you’ll still be able to get a good look. Pictures and filming while inside the building are strictly prohibited, and security guards will stop you if they see you breaking this rule.

The mausoleum is only open on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday – unless it’s a public holiday or a day scheduled for maintenance. The hours it’s open for each day are limited, make sure to check online before you visit to make sure you can fit this into your Moscow itinerary for that day!

Insider Tip: The Lenin’s Museum is there for people to pay their respect; remember to keep silent and move along quickly, it’s not intended for people to congregate around. Also, men are not allowed to wear hats and everyone must take their hands out of their pockets when inside the building.

Day 1 / Stop 4 – St. Basil’s Cathedral

This iconic cathedral has become a symbol of Russia due to its distinguishing architecture and prominent position inside the Red Square. It’s one of the most beautiful, wonderful, and mesmerizing historical cathedrals in the world!

St. Basils Cathedral

The interior of the church surprises most people when they visit. In contrast to the large exterior, the inside is not so much one large area, but rather a collection of smaller areas, with many corridors and small rooms. There are 9 small chapels and one mausoleum grouped around a central tower.

Visiting the inside is like walking through a maze, there are even small signs all around the cathedral tracing where to walk, and pointing you in the right direction! The walls are meticulously decorated and painted with intricate floral designs and religious themes.

The church rarely holds service and is instead a museum open for the public to visit.

Insider Tip: During the summer months the line to go inside the cathedral can get quite long! Make sure to arrive early or reserve your tickets online to guarantee quick access into the cathedral!

Cosmonautics Museum | Alexander Garden | Ostankino Tower | Izmaylovo District | Soviet Arcade Museum

Now that we’ve covered what to do in Moscow in 2 days, if you’re able to spend more time in the city you’re going to need more attractions to fill your time. Here are a few more really cool things to do in Moscow we recommend!

Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics

  • Hear the timeline of the ‘space race’ from the Russian perspective
  • This museum is fun for both adults and children!
  • Admission is USD $4.00

The Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics is a museum dedicated to space exploration! The museum explores the history of flight, astronomy, space exploration, space technology, and space in the arts. It houses a large assortment of Soviet and Russian space-related exhibits, and the museum’s collection holds approximately 85,000 different items!

Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics

The museum does an excellent job of telling the full story of the exciting space race between the USSR and the US! It highlights the brightest moments in Russian history and humanity and is very interesting and fun for all ages!

If you’re a fan of space or just curious about gaining insight into Russia’s fascinating history of space exploration, make sure to add this to your 3 day itinerary in Moscow!

The Alexander Garden

  • A tranquil place to relax near the Red Square
  • Green lawns dotted with sculptures and lovely water features
  • The park is open every day and has no entrance fee

The Alexander Garden was one of the first urban public parks in Moscow! The garden premiered in 1821 and was built to celebrate Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s forces in 1812!

The park is beautiful and well maintained with paths to walk on and benches to rest on. The park contains three separate gardens: the upper garden, middle garden, and lower garden.

The Alexander Garden

Located in the upper garden, towards the main entrance to the park is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with its eternal flame. This monument was created in 1967 and contains the body of a soldier who fell during the Great Patriotic War!

The park stretches along all the length of the western Kremlin wall for about half a mile. Due to its central location in the city, it’ll be easily accessible when you’re out exploring The Red Square.

It provides a bit of relief from the city’s high-energy city streets. Bring a picnic lunch, go for a walk, or just sit and people watch, this is one of the best Moscow sites to wind-down and relax!

Ostankino Television Tower

  • Television and radio tower in Moscow
  • Currently the tallest free-standing structure in Europe
  • Make sure you bring your passport when you visit, you can’t go up without it!

For spectacular views of the city, make sure to add the Ostankino Television Tower to your itinerary for Moscow! This impressive free-standing structure provides stunning views of the city in every direction. The glass floor at the top also provides great alternative views of the city!

Ostankino Television Tower

It takes just 58 seconds for visitors to reach the Tower’s observation deck by super fast elevator. The tower is open every day for long hours and is a great site in Moscow to check out! There is even a restaurant at the top where you can enjoy rotating views of the city while you dine on traditional Russian cuisine or European cuisine!

The tower is somewhat of an architectural surprise in a city that is not known for skyscrapers! To see the city from a new perspective, make sure to add this stop to your Moscow itinerary!

Izmaylovo District

  • The most popular attractions in this district are the kremlin and the flea market
  • Outside of the city center and easy to reach via metro
  • Most popular during the summer and on weekends

Travel outside the city center and discover a unique area of the city! The Izmaylovo District is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike, and one of the coolest places to see in Moscow! The two main attractions we recommend checking out are the Kremlin and the flea market.

The Izmailovo Kremlin was established as a cultural center and molded after traditional Russian architecture. This colorful complex is home to several single-subject museums, including a Russian folk art museum and a vodka museum!

Izmaylovo District

Next to the Kremlin is the Izmailovo open-air market, which dates back to the 17th century! The market is connected to the Izmailovo Kremlin by a wooden bridge. Pick up all your Russian souvenirs here, including traditional handicrafts, paintings, books, retro toys, and Soviet memorabilia!

You will find many hand-made and hand-painted options available at higher prices, as well as mass-produced souvenir options at lower prices!

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

  • Closed on Mondays
  • Filled with old arcade games that visitors get to try out!
  • The museum also includes a small cafe and burger shop

For something a little different, check out the Museum of Soviet Arcade Games! The museum features roughly 60 machines from the Soviet era, including video games, pinball machines, and collaborative hockey foosball! The machines inside the museum were produced in the USSR in the mid-1970s.

Museum of Soviet Arcade Games

The best part is, most of the games are still playable! Purchase tickets and try the games out for yourself! The museum also has a neat little screening room that plays old Soviet cartoons and an area with Soviet magazines! This unique attraction is a fun addition to a 3 day itinerary in Moscow, and an attraction that all ages will enjoy!

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .

Most Beautiful Metro Stations in Moscow

Most Beautiful Metro Stations in Moscow

Visiting Moscow? Get yourself a metro card and explore Moscow’s beautiful metro stations. Moscow’s world-famous metro system is efficient and a great way to get from A to B. But there is more to it; Soviet mosaic decorations, exuberant halls with chandeliers, colourful paintings and immense statues. Moscow’s metro is an attraction itself, so take half a day and dive into Moscow’s underground!

The best thing to do is to get on the brown circle (number 5) line since the most beautiful metro stations are situated on this line. The only exception is the metro stop Mayakovskaya one the green line (number 2). My suggestion is to get a map, mark these metro stops on there and hop on the metro. It helps to get an English > Russian map to better understand the names of the stops. At some of the metro stops, the microphone voice speaks Russian and English so it’s not difficult at all.

Another thing we found out, is that it’s worth taking the escalator and explore the other corridors to discover how beautiful the full station is.

Quick hotel suggestion for Moscow is the amazing Brick Design Hotel .

These are my favourite metro stations in Moscow, in order of my personal preference:

1. Mayakovskaya Station

The metro station of Mayakovskaya looks like a ballroom! Wide arches, huge domes with lamps and mosaic works make your exit of the metro overwhelming. Look up and you will see the many colourful mosaics with typical Soviet pictures. Mayakovskaya is my personal favourite and is the only stop not on the brown line but on the green line.

travel singles over 50 australia

2. Komsomolskaya Station

Komsomolskaya metro station is famous for its yellow ceiling. An average museum is nothing compared to this stop. Splendour all over the place, black and gold, mosaic – again – and enormous chandeliers that made my lamp at home look like a toy.

3. Novoslobodskaya Station

The pillars in the main hall of Novoslobodskaya metro station have the most colourful stained glass decorations. The golden arches and the golden mosaic with a naked lady holding a baby in front of the Soviet hammer and sickle, make the drama complete.

4. Prospect Mira Station

The beautiful chandeliers and the lines in the ceiling, make Prospekt Mira an architectural masterpiece.

5. Belorusskaya Station

Prestigious arches, octagonal shapes of Socialistic Soviet Republic mosaics. The eyecatcher of Belorusskaya metro station, however, is the enormous statue of three men with long coats, holding guns and a flag.

travel singles over 50 australia

6. Kiyevskaya Station

The metro station of Kiyevskaya is a bit more romantic than Belorusskaya and Prospect Mira. Beautiful paintings with classical decorations.

7. Taganskaya Station

At the main hall Taganskaya metro station you will find triangle light blue and white decorations that are an ode to various Russians that – I assume – are important for Russian history and victory. There is no need to explore others halls of Taganskaya, this is it.

8. Paveletskaya Station

Another and most definitely the less beautiful outrageous huge golden mosaic covers one of the walls of Paveletskaya. I would recommend taking the escalator to the exit upstairs to admire the turquoise dome and a painting of the St Basil’s Cathedral in a wooden frame.

It’s absolutely beautiful! Moscow is a great city trip destination and really surprised me in many ways.

My partner and I did a self guided Moscow Metro tour when we were there 2 years ago. So many breathtaking platforms…I highly recommend it! Most of my favorites were along the Brown 5 line, as well. I also loved Mayakovskaya, Arbatskaya, Aleksandrovski Sad and Ploshchad Revolyutsii. We’re heading back in a few weeks and plan to do Metro Tour-Part 2. We hope to see the #5 stations we missed before, as well as explore some of the Dark Blue #3 (Park Pobedy and Slavyansky Bul’var, for sure), Yellow #8 and Olive #10 platforms.

That’s exciting Julia! Curious to see your Metro Tour-Part 2 experience and the stations you discovered.
