Buffalo, New York is only an hour from where we live and yet we never have truly visited. Sure we have done plenty of shopping trips to Buffalo or flew from the Buffalo Airport but staying over and exploring the city? Embarrassed to say, never!

I am so happy to say that I can now put together a Buffalo, NY Travel Guide after finally experiencing a weekend trip to Buffalo properly.

A weekend trip where we not only enjoyed ourselves but may have fallen a bit in love with the second biggest city in New York State. It was our first time spending a full weekend in Buffalo but it certainly won’t be the last.

We felt like it was a mini “Brooklyn, New York” offering top notch restaurant and cocktail bars, amazing architecture and cool attractions that we would drive over to visit just for the day!

The best part is that it is located along Lake Erie so you have river views as well.

Now, let’s get to the best things to do in Buffalo, where to stay and what you should know before travelling to Buffalo for the weekend!

When is the Best Time To Visit Buffalo, NY?

Buffalo gets to enjoy all four seasons. Each season brings something special to do and explore.

We went during the last week of August and absolutely loved it! We could easily walk around, enjoyed the waterfront and felt those “Summer in the City” vibes.

Buffalo Winters can be cold and snowy but if you are Canadian, you know all about that kind of thing. We hope to visit again in the winter and explore some winter themed attractions.

How To Get to Buffalo, NY?

Travelling to Buffalo from Canada is easy peasy. We drove just over the border from Hamilton, Ontario and crossed over at the Peace Bridge. It took us 1 hour and 15 minutes.

As of August 2022, we did not require a COVID-19 Test entering the USA or for returning to Canada. We also did not need to fill out the Arrive Can app when crossing the border.

DRIVING TO BUFFALO FROM OTHER PLACES:

N EW YORK CITY- 6 Hours, TORONTO – 2 Hours

ARRIVING FROM THE AIRPORT: Buffalo has an international airport which is located at 4200 Genesee St, Buffalo, 14225. It’s about 20 minutes to the downtown core from the Buffalo Airport.

Where to Stay in Buffalo, NY?

Buffalo has a range of hotels depending on what you are looking for. Right off the highway you can find hotels like the Courtyard Marriott or the Hilton which are conveniently located and have lots of great amenities.

We stayed at the Marriott Lecom Harbourfront Center which was PERFECT! Not only was it beautiful (new and modern) but it was great for our family.

We upgraded to a family suite which had a one bedroom with King Bed and a complete lounge area. The lounge area had two couches ( one which turned into a Queen bed),a kitchenette and even a little kitchen table! The bathrooms legitimately made me feel like I was at the spa.

Other Hotels or Places To Stay In Buffalo

The curtis hotel- swanky hotel in buffalo.

The Curtis Hotel is a 5 star boutique hotel located in a stunning landmark building. It features a rooftop lounge, spa and has great food and beverage options on site. When I go back to Buffalo, I am going to try to stay here!!

Hotel at the Lafayette

This is a boutique hotel located in the core of the downtown. You are pretty much central to everything when you stay here. My favourite thing about this hotel was that is a historical landmark built by America’s first professional female architect, Louise Blanchard Bethune. Pretty cool and iconic!

They also are attached to an amazing coffee shop called Public Espresso.

What Are The Best Restaurants in Buffalo, NY?

One of my favourite things that we did in Buffalo was eat our way through it. And I am not talking about Buffalo wings ( though we did have those too!)

The food and dining scene in Buffalo is on FIRE! There are new, cool and unique restaurants and bars popping up left, right and center and I am here for it.

We were only here for the weekend so our stomachs could only handle so much but these were the best restaurants in Buffalo worth checking out!

Graylynn- Amazing Gin Bar and Restaurant in downtown Buffalo

Oooo this place had a vibe. It reminded me of the West Village in New York City. It’s located on a prime corner in Downtown and features a wrap around patio that offers views of the Buffalo City Bank.

It is a casual yet refined spot and the type of place you can go to once a week if you lived close by!

It has over 100 types of Gin on hand and their cocktail menu has beautiful hand crafted cocktails that reflect their Gin offerings. I went with one that had Empress Gin in it and my hubby got a Lemon Honey Basil drink. Both were equally amazing.

The food menu features smaller sharing plates, fish, pub fare and pasties. My favourite dish was the Oysters and Mussels!!!

Travel Guide to the best restaurants in Buffalo

Wonder Coffeehouse

This breakfast joint was located in the industrial area of town which made it even more cool. You wouldn’t expect there to be much there in terms of restaurants and then BAM- the cutest restaurant ever appears.

The outside patio and part of the exterior is made up of piled shipping containers. They are tastefully painted with some signage on a few that fit together perfectly. We recommend sitting on the patio but if you can’t- the inside is cozy and romantic.

They serve up over 15 kind of homemade Liege waffles so whether your taste buds are craving something savoury or sweet, you will be able to find something here that suits it.

Strong Hearts- Vegan Lunch Place In Buffalo

My husband loves meat. He normally snarls a bit at me when I make him something Vegetarian or Vegan. I read such crazy good reviews of Strong Hearts, one of Buffalo’s newer Vegetarian restaurants, so I did a little test.

I got him a “Chicken Parm” sandwich and didn’t tell him it was meat free. I got myself their Chickpea Wrap. My daughter got a Smoothie. We all finished our food within 10 minutes. It was SOOOO good! My husband thought it was one of the best “Chicken Parm” sandwiches he has had.

I finally told him it was vegetarian and he was floored! Vegetarian or not- this place is a must eat at for a casual, guilt free lunch!

The interior is also bright, colorful and perfect.

Liberty Hound- Waterfront Lunch and Dining Spot in Buffalo

Liberty Hound , located right on Buffalo’s Harbourfront, is a perfect place for the family for lunch or dinner. Not only do you get prime views of the Buffalo river, you get views of the Buffalo and Erie County Naval and Military Park which features two large war ships.

Liberty Hound’s menu is fish-centric featuring mouth watering Lobster Rolls, Clam Dishes, Jumbulya and more. Do not sit on the Lobster Roll. It was so delicious that we didn’t even have time to snap a photo of it.

If you don’t make it for the food, at least grab a brew on the patio! They have a big list of craft beers.

Butter Block- Pastry and Cafe

Located in Buffalos’ Five Point neighbourhood, this pastry shop made us feel like we actually lived in Buffalo! We learned very quickly that Butter Block had a cult following and for good reason.

There were locals lining up as early as 8:30AM to get their hands on what may be some of the best pastries and baked good we have ever eaten. Truth.

We got the Morning Bun, Chocolate Pop Tart and Almond Croissant. I could not for the life of me pick which one was best. DON’T MAKE ME PICK! All equally and insanely delicious.

Lucky Day- A Must Stop for a Cocktail

Lucky Day is a cocktail bar located in downtown Buffalo that houses over 100 types of Bourbons.

Make no mistake though- they have a lot of other amazing cocktails if you aren’t into Bourbon. I decided to have a bourbon cocktail though ( When in Rome!) and ordered a Mint Julep. Aaron got a Paper Plane.

We could have just visited and watched the bartenders in action though. The bar itself is over 20 feet high ( I mean 100 bottles of Bourbons need to be shelved somewhere) and all the bartenders are in classic vests. It gives off that old school and classic bar vibe but the space itself has a seriously edgy punch.

Amazing for a pre or post dinner drink!

Remedy House- Another stunning and delicious breakfast spot in Buffalo

Remedy House is a breakfast spot that you can really spend some time at. They have not only an extensive coffee menu and delicious handheld egg sandwiches but they are located on a prime corner in the Five Points neighbourhood. Their patio area wraps around the building and the building itself has sliding doors to give it an indoor/outdoor feel.

You can kick your breakfast up a notch too as they have a pretty amazing morning cocktail list.

The Coolest And Most Unique Things To Do in Buffalo, NY

There are plenty of things to do in Buffalo, NY. If you are travelling with friends, a partner, or your family, there are so many unique activities to discover and get up to.

We did a mix of family friendly activities in Buffalo as we were travelling with the little ones and then also got up to some more attractions that we wanted to explore for us! We loved seeing both sides of the city.

We hope to go back in the winter months so we can see Buffalo during this season.

Here are some of the cool and fun things we did during our Buffalo visit this time around ( end of August):

Frank Llyod Wright Tour

This was hands down our favourite thing that we did in Buffalo! If you are a design lover, you cannot miss the tour of Architect Frank Llyod Wright’s house that he created for Darwin Martin.

This masterpiece was built starting in 1903 and not only has a crazy history that went through lots of highs and lows but it is also considered one of Frank Llyod Wright’s masterpieces.

We opted for the 75 minute tour of Martin’s house and it flew by. It was so informative and kept us captivated. We got to ask questions as we walked through the place and we left really understanding how Frank Llyod Wright was as a person and how thoughtful his design process was here.

We brought along the kids too so the 75 minute tour was the right amount of time ( for their short attention span haha). This is a fun activity for adults in Buffalo though overall!

THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE VISITING THE FRANK LLYOD WRIGHT HOUSE: Strollers are not permitted inside and you cannot take photos of the interior.

Buffalo Heritage Carousel

HOURS: Open Monday, Wednesday to Saturday, 11 – 7 pm Sunday, from 11 – 5 pm & Closed Tuesday

For the price of $1, you can ride on one of Buffalo’s newer Canalside attraction- The Buffalo Heritage Carousel.

While we initially headed here for the kids, we equally enjoyed ourselves! It is a fun and affordable activity in Buffalo and the restoration of it was done so beautifully. If you don’t like marigold rounds, it is worth checking out just for the design of it all. The hand carved wooden animals and charming music make you feel all sorts of ways.

Explore the Street Art in Buffalo

Buffalo, Ny is home to some beautiful Murals and Street Art. There are over 50 Murals by some incredible artists in the city. You can spend a day scoping them out.

We purposely went to a few with the Mural addresses in tow and then other ones we simply saw just from walking around town. Between the neighbourhoods of Elmwood Village, Allen town, downtown and

Visit the Explore and More Museum

The Explore and More Museum in Buffalo is MUCH more than a Museum. It is the perfect kid friendly activity in Buffalo that is interactive, educational and FUN! There are four floors of things to do- each floor having a theme and unique element.

You can find Carwashes, a Mini Hospital, a Grocery Store, Farm Set ups, a Tree house, Climbing sets, Science elements, and a Rooftop with even more fun ( and fresh air).

We spent an hour here but could have spent (and would recommend) about 2 hours total here to really see it all.

We only had so much time in Buffalo so could only do the activities above but next time we come back we are looking to check out some of the following attractions:

Check Out the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site and Buffalo City Hall ( a little more history and architecture!)
Buffalo Botanical gardens
We have done many Niagara wine trail tours but there are also some wineries in Buffalo too which would be cool to see
Niagara Falls State Park ( to see the falls from the US side!)
We visited the outside of the Shea’s Performing arts center but I would love to see a show and go inside of the building!
Buffalo AKG Art Museum (formerly the Albright-Knox Art Gallery )

The best time to visit Buffalo is between April and November when the weather is warmer—it never gets super hot there, even in high summer. Popular Events and Festivals

Buffalo has events and festivals throughout the year that attract locals and visitors, sometimes increasing crowds. The largest are in spring and summer, including the uber-popular National Buffalo Wing Festival , which usually occurs in early September over Labor Day Weekend and can draw upwards of 60,000 people, and Dyngus Day, a Polish-American festival around Easter. Also in summer is the Allentown Art Festival and Taste of Buffalo, the largest two-day food festival in the country. And even though it’s freezing, Buffalo’s waterfront comes alive in winter (mostly with locals) with an outdoor ice rink that hosts everything from classic ice skating to curling to ice bumper cars.

Winter is the off-season for Buffalo, with freezing temperatures and snow, but it brings out the locals who love ice sports. Hotel prices and flights should be more affordable. That said, you should only visit in winter if you like cold weather and winter sports like ice-skating, hockey, curling, snowshoeing, and skiing. It’s also worth noting that Niagara Falls in winter is truly spectacular, with almost no crowds. Just be sure to dress warmly!

There are various Christmas markets in November and December throughout the city, including Queen City Market , Shea’s Shopping Soiree at Shea’s Buffalo Theatre, Christmas at the Wurlitzer Craft and Gifts, Buffalo’s Women’s Gifts with an all-women lineup of vendors, and Christmas in the Country and Yuletide in the Country at Hamburg Fairgrounds.
The Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conversancy hosts the Winter Blast over Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend in January, complete with pond skating and hockey, snowshoe trails, face painting, and cookie decorating.

Spring is lovely in Buffalo, as temperatures begin to warm up in late May (April and early May are still chilly) but generally stay below 70 degrees F (21 degrees C). Crowds are smaller than in summer as well, and there are several outdoor events. This is a perfect time to check out some of the many public parks in Buffalo and the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens .

Buffalo RiverWorks has Thawfest in early April, hosting breweries, cideries, wineries, and distilleries across New York State.
Dyngus Day is Buffalo’s Mardi Gras, the annual post-Lent party that comes from Polish tradition. It always falls on the Monday after Easter and brings crowds as large as 10,000 people. While Dyngus Day is celebrated elsewhere’s Buffalo’s festival is the largest in the U.S. Expect a parade and a day full of parties across multiple venues and neighborhoods, traditional Polish garb and/or red clothing, live music, Polish food and beer, Polka dancing, and an obscene amount of pussy willows being waved.
In May, there is the annual Buffalo Cherry Blossom Festival at the Japanese Gardens of Delaware Park.
Elmwood Village hosts the biannual PorchFest , a unique grassroots music festival where locals host musicians to play live music on their porches, in May.

Average temperatures in summer bring highs in the mid-70s Fahrenheit and lows in the 60s, with a pleasant breeze around Lake Eerie. Summer brings sunshine and warmth (although there are a few rainy days here and there), which means lots of outdoor events and festivals, and a bustling waterfront. Boating and cruising on the lake or river is a popular summer pastime. The revitalized RiverWorks and Buffalo Waterfront at Canalside host everything from concerts to fitness classes to zip-lining to rock climbing up the side of the famous grain silos. While things might be busier than usual, Buffalo doesn’t often have overcrowding, except at some major festivals like Taste of Buffalo.

The Allentown Art Festival has been around for more than 60 years. It celebrates Buffalo's art and culture over a summer weekend in June in the Historic Preservation District of Allentown, with artwork from dozens of mediums represented.
June brings Buffalo Pride Week , full of parades, parties, and a festival at Canalside on the waterfront.
The largest two-day food festival in the United States, Taste of Buffalo , is a food-filled weekend in the heart of downtown occurring annually over a July weekend since 1985. Food purveyors from across the Buffalo Niagara region charge between $1 and $5 for food and drink tastes, plus there is live music and other entertainment.
Buffalo on Tap Craft Beer Festival is usually held every year in July at the Hamburg Fairgrounds and features more than 150 beers from craft brewers from across Western New York and food and live music.
Buffalo Brew Fest has been happening annually in August for more than 20 years and now takes place at RiverWorks. There are typically more than 100 beers from around 50 brewers to sample, and all proceeds go to Buffalo Hearing and Speech Center.

Fall is a great time to visit Buffalo, thanks to cooler weather, beautiful foliage, and a top-notch beer scene. Temperatures can be up to 70 degrees F (21 degrees C) in September but can go as low as 35 degrees F (1 degree C) in November, and snow and rain are possible. You can head to the parks to see changing leaves, see Niagara Falls with fewer crowds, and enjoy one of the country's largest festivals, the National Buffalo Wing Festival. There are also typically about a dozen different Oktoberfest celebrations around the city.

Easily the festival that attracts the most out-of-towners, the National Buffalo Wing Festival is a two-day celebration of Buffalo’s most well-known food. It usually takes place over the Saturday and Sunday of Labor Day weekend in early September and features wings in various flavors from around 25 local restaurants. Events include the Miss Buffalo Wings Contest, Bobbing for Wings, Baby Wing Contest, live music from various bands, and the main event: the United States Chicken Wing Eating Championship. Around 60,000 people come from around the country and the world for the annual festival, held for more than 15 years.
Labor Day Weekend is Buffalo German Fest, celebrating German culture through food, beer, music, dancing, games, and more.
Starting in mid-September and through the end of October, head over to the Great Pumpkin Farm on weekends for their Fall Festival, featuring a corn maze, hayrides, Boo Barn, and more.
Take in the foliage at the Roycroft Fall Art & Antique Show , usually held in September or October. Visitors can browse and buy art, pet alpacas, hear live music, and observe demonstrations like glass blowing. Food trucks are on-site for snacks and drinks.

The best time to visit Buffalo is between April and November when the weather is warm. Even in the summer, the city doesn't get too hot, but visit in the shoulder seasons of spring or fall for comfortable temperatures with fewer crowds.

Winter is intensely cold in Buffalo, with the lowest temperatures in January and February. Snow is a part of everyday life throughout the season, so make sure to come prepared.

36 Hours in Buffalo

Classic architecture, international cuisine, adventurous activities and serious art: This Western New York city is blossoming.

Is it the influx of immigrants from countries like Myanmar and Bhutan or the uptick in cultural investments? The transformation of the waterfront or the revitalization of local institutions? Or is it simply the food? Like many small American cities, Buffalo, which had early booms from various industries, including railways, shipyards and steel manufacturing, is shedding its rusty roots and experiencing a bona fide renaissance. No longer merely the portal to nearby Niagara Falls, Buffalo is a modern and multifaceted city, more than ready for its moment.

1) 3 P.M. ABOVE IT ALL

A good place to begin your visit to the Queen City — so named for its once prosperous position within the state — is above it. City Hall , downtown on Niagara Square in a majestic 32-story Art Deco tower, has a free public observatory that offers 360 views of Lake Erie and Canada, the city’s old factories and grain silos, and a scattershot of the surrounding 20th-century architecture. When you enter the domed lobby, admire the murals representing such themes as peace, industry and pioneer life. Then take the elevator to the 25th floor and walk up the remaining three flights. Before circling the outdoor catwalk, read the placards on the inside perimeter that will give you a deeper appreciation of the city’s unique geography and history you’re about to look at.

2) 5 P.M. CLIMB A WALL

After seeing the sights, scale your own. Buffalo RiverWorks is a recreational complex occupying several structures of a former grain-milling facility along the Buffalo River, including old grain silos that now have 35-, 40- and 50-foot climbing walls, both inside and outside. Experts are on hand to harness you in and help guide you, whatever your level ($7 a single climb; $20 an hour). If wall-climbing is too daunting, do some loops on the indoor roller rink, rent a kayak or water-bike on the river, or just grab a home-brewed brown ale and watch all the action.

3) 8 P.M. WING IT

It’s hard to get a bad chicken wing in Buffalo. And while everyone has an opinion on whose is best, you can’t go wrong at Anchor Bar . Since serving its first batch of deep-fried wings doused in a “special sauce” in 1964, the bar has seemingly filled up every square inch of its original location with bric-a-brac. You’ll likely have to wait, so pass the time checking out the license plates from around the country, signed photos of minor celebrities who have eaten there, tricycles and Harleys hanging from the ceiling, and the trophies for the restaurant’s sauce. In addition to mild, medium and spicy, wings come in chipotle, garlic Parmesan and sweet and sour flavors, all served with celery and blue cheese ($11.95 for 10 pieces; $20.95 for 20). Not a wings person? Not a problem. In addition to standard bar fare like burgers and wraps, Anchor Bar serves a solid Buffalo-style thick crust pizza.

4) 9 A.M. A FRESH START

Make your way toward Canalside , the revitalized area along the Erie Canal Harbor that seems to keep expanding geographically. Its programming keeps expanding, too: concerts, fitness classes, children’s story hours and more, all of which draw locals and visitors alike to the once-neglected waterfront. Rent a paddle boat, try longboard yoga (the practice of yoga on a paddleboard while floating in water), stroll the boardwalk, play a game of Ping-Pong and check out the site of the future Explore & More Children’s Museum, scheduled to open next year. However you decide to get your activity on, make time to visit Sharkgirl , the half-shark, half-girl sculpture created by the artist Casey Riordan Millard that has become a selfie sensation.

5) 11:30 A.M. INTERNATIONAL FLAVOR

Pop across town and see another side of Buffalo’s changing face. Housed in a simple garage-like space, West Side Bazaar is a small business incubator run by the city’s booming immigrant and refugee populations. Browse the half-dozen vendors like Nadin Yousef who is from Iraq and makes macramé jewelry, wall hangings and plant holders. Then dive into the smorgasbord of international flavors at the casual cafeteria-style dining section. Between the nine vendors, there are over 200 options ranging in price from about $2 to $11. Ethiopian injera topped with spicy lentils and vegetables? Sweet and sour Thai tom yum soup? The world is your oyster.

6) 1 P.M. TOUR A CLASSIC

Move onto a different kind of cultural experience in Buffalo’s regal Parkside neighborhood. The magnificent Martin House , one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s many notable structures in Western New York, has been restored after 21 years and $50 million of efforts. The house has a fascinating history of opulence, abandonment and resurrection, which the docent will share as you start in the Toshiko Mori-designed glass pavilion and are then guided through the 15,000-square-foot home (one- and two-hour tours, $19 and $37). Upon entering, catch the epic view of a towering Winged Victory sculpture, visible in the home’s conservatory, across a dramatic 175-foot pergola. The home also features furniture, decorative elements and art glass designed for the Martin family by Wright.

7) 2:30 P.M. STROLL & SHOP

As you crisscross the city, one thing you won’t see is a big mall or department store. Instead the city’s shopping is wonderfully small-scale and local, best illustrated in Elmwood Village. Stroll alongside young families and students from Buffalo State College who give the neighborhood its buzz. Explore the unique boutiques. Blue Sky Design Supply offers sustainable housewares and interior decorating supplies; Half & Half is where you’ll find the season’s trends for both men and women; and Talking Leaves is your source for idiosyncratic book titles along with best-sellers. You also won’t want to miss Watson’s Chocolates , founded in 1946. Treat yourself to a box of sponge candy, an airy, crunchy treat made with caramelized sugar and covered in chocolate that’s a Western New York specialty.

8) 3:30 P.M. ARCHITECTURAL GEM

Before the day is over, do a little time travel with a visit to the theater district’s Market Arcade . Built in 1892, the historic Beaux-Arts and neo-Classical space is modeled after the decorative shopping arcades of 19th-century London. Admire the architectural details — Corinthian columns, Palladian windows and sculpted bison heads — as you step inside the three-story building that’s diffused with natural light from a frosted glass skylight above. You can also take home a piece of the city, thanks to the growing number of boutiques like Buffalo Adore , which features plenty of Buffalo-themed shirts, pins, coasters and prints from more than 100 local artisans.

9) 6 P.M. COCKTAIL CULTURE

It’s finally time to ease into evening, and there’s no better way to do it than with a well-crafted, cheekily named cocktail at the nearby Buffalo Proper . One of the city’s few focused cocktail programs when it opened in 2014, the tavern continues to be a big hit with the city’s young professionals. The mustachioed barmen in plaid, and the interior’s twee mix of taxidermy and mismatched vintage glasses makes it feel like Buffalo by way of Brooklyn. Try the BFLO Bramble, made with bison grass vodka, blackberries and mint ($10).

10) 7:30 P.M. MODERN MEXICAN

Finish the day back on the west side for more worldly flavors — this time contemporary Mexican at Las Puertas . A follow-up to his more casual restaurant, Casa Azul , the chef Victor Parra Gonzalez serves up a modern vision of Mexican food that’s as unassuming as it is special: guacamole dusted with crushed crickets; a bed of creamy mole verde, topped with vegetables, sesame seeds and queso cotija cheese; tender duck that’s paired incongruously but deliciously with poached pears, heirloom carrots and quinoa. The intimate space and simple white interior act like a blank canvas, letting the elegantly plated dishes stand out that much more. Dinner for two with wine is about $130.

11) 10 A.M. START WITH ART

Have a yearning to see a Rothko, Renoir or Rodin? You’re in luck. The Albright-Knox Art Gallery ($12), one of the oldest museums in the nation, packs a punch. The modestly sized museum started in 1863 with an oil painting by Albert Bierstadt and has steadily amassed an impressive collection of everything from photography to abstract expressionism. It also hosts about six major exhibitions a year, including this summer’s retrospective of the late Robert Indiana, which will feature a never before shown LOVE sculpture. Then journey across the street to the Burchfield Penney Art Center on the campus of Buffalo State College ($10). Devoted to the American artist who found much inspiration in Western New York’s vistas and streetscapes, there’s always an eclectic range of craft art, architecture and design on exhibit to discover.

12) 12:30 P.M. BRUNCH BREAK

A coffeehouse, larder and more, Rowhouse Bakery & Restaurant taps into all the things a modern foodie wants and delivers them in one charmingly sprawling space. There are all kinds of nooks to enjoy your turmeric smoothie or macchiato in: near a fireplace in the cocktail lounge, in a book alcove overlooking the three-story atrium, or perched at a counter in a clean white cafe. But with its plush chairs and ornamental fireplaces, it’s worth sitting in the refined dining room to dig into a breakfast pizza with ricotta, egg and sausage or cinnamon brioche French toast served with an apple compote. Brunch for two about $50.

13) 2 P.M. GO WILD

Another city institution, the Buffalo Zoo ($12.50, adults; $9.25, children), which dates back more than 140 years, continues to upgrade its facilities to both promote animal conservation and wow its guests. Take your time exploring the more than 23 acres, which are home to everything from a Brazilian tarantula to an Indian rhinoceros. Along the way you can watch a pride of lions frolic outdoors, escape to a rain forest with a two-story waterfall and free-flying birds, and go nose-to-nose with Luna, one of two polar bears and the zoo’s unofficial mascot.

As eclectic as it is classic, the 28-room Mansion on Delaware Avenue (414 Delaware Avenue, mansionondelaware.com) is conveniently located in the center of the city. Rooms seamlessly blend historic architecture with modern touches, including working fireplaces and LED TVs, while butler service makes you feel like you’re enjoying Buffalo’s golden days. Complimentary wine and tea and a large buffet breakfast are served in one of the two main parlors. Rooms start at $180.

Housed in a former mental hospital, the 88-room Hotel Henry (444 Forest Avenue, hotelhenry.com) is a unique stay, to say the least. Indeed, the exterior looks a bit foreboding, but the new hotel is completely modern and welcoming inside, starting with the spacious common areas and popular farm-to-table restaurant, 100 Acres. Rooms are also generously sized, and outfitted with padded headboards, soft throws and palettes of soothing grays. Standard doubles from $165.

Even though Buffalo is known to us Canadians as a place to hop across the border to go shopping at outlet malls or attending hockey games, there are so many things to see in Buffalo outside of that. In fact, I’m not even going to mention a single outlet mall or hockey arena in this entire travel blog post.

Buffalo has been undergoing a massive revitalization for several years now, with new businesses and community spaces opening at a quick pace. There’s such a buzz in the city as it continues to change by the moment.

Fun Things to Do in Buffalo: Cycling (Three Ways!)

Did you know that there’s more than one way to go cycling in the city of Buffalo? You can probably guess the first way – on a standard bicycle. One of the most fun things to do in Buffalo NY is going water biking! Haven’t heard of water biking? Let us show you what it’s all about.

Water Bikes of Buffalo

We rented water bikes from Water Bikes of Buffalo , and it’s one of the most fun things to do in Buffalo, NY. It’s essentially a bicycle on top of a floating platform that enables you to glide across the water. Justin and I pedaled down the canal on our water bikes, admiring the scenery as we embraced the slight waves caused by passing boats.

It’s not only an original activity to try, but the scenery is truly one of a kind. Drift past old grain elevators, a giant naval ship, and even out towards a lighthouse along the shores of Lake Erie. This is one of the most unique things to do in Buffalo as I haven’t seen it anywhere else before.

Water bikes are rented out by the hour during the summer months. Although we didn’t try it, there are even tandem water bikes – just in case you’re interested in trying to make your partner do all the legwork (just kidding!).

Cycling in Buffalo

With a revitalized waterfront and lengthy paved paths, going for a bike ride is an excellent way to savour stunning views of Lake Erie. You can rent bikes by the hour to explore urban trails, nature preserves, and marinas. Buffalo’s Outer Harbor connects with other local trail systems, and there’s even a bike ferry to help you get around town.

Justin and I discovered Wilkeson Pointe, a hill topped with wind sculptures that has sweeping views of Lake Erie and the Buffalo skyline. We continued our journey towards Buffalo Harbor State Park, a green space where you can watch the boats sail by.

I can also suggest going on a bike tour around this area to travel around with an experienced guide. Although you can wander around and explore the buildings on your own, it’s best to join a tour so you can learn from an expert. One of the best attractions in Buffalo is its architecture, so it’s not to be missed. It’s one of the best things to do in downtown Buffalo and beyond.

Taking a walking tour is the best way to familiarize yourself with the architecture in downtown Buffalo. Explore Buffalo operates their architecture tours several times a week. While you used to be able to simply show up, you now need to make reservations in advance through their website.

Our guide was knowledgeable, friendly, and answered any questions that we had. We mostly wandered around outdoors, although we did venture inside a few of the buildings to see various interior architectural styles. If you’re a history buff, you’ll adore this tour.

Along the way, we examined and admired several prominent buildings, including the Guaranty Building, the Old Post Office, the Ellicott Square Building, and St. Paul’s Cathedral. Notably, Hotel Lafayette was designed by Louise Blanchard Bethune, the first known female architect in the United States.

The tour lasts approximately two hours and costs $16 per person. It was not only a great way to see the brilliant architectural gems around Buffalo, but it really helped us to familiarize ourselves with the city. It’s one of the best activities in Buffalo that’s in this Buffalo travel guide.

Frank Lloyd Wright’s Martin House Complex

For fans of architecture, one excellent reason to travel to Buffalo is to witness Frank Lloyd Wright’s masterful project, the Darwin D. Martin House . This home was built in the early 1900s, and it’s considered to be one of his greatest works. This is one of the best places to visit in Buffalo for those who love history, too.

Every detail of this large Prairie home was carefully planned, including every piece of furniture. There are six connected buildings in total, including a long pergola that leads to a conservatory. The house contains nearly 400 examples of Frank Lloyd Wright’s originally designed art glass, including the “Tree of Life” window.

Even though it’s full of so much American history, the home surprisingly sat abandoned and empty for many years. Sadly, it became damaged and some buildings were completely destroyed. Thankfully, it’s been restored to its earlier glory. In 1986, the Martin House Complex was declared a National Historic Landmark.

We’ve never visited a home quite like this one. In fact, it’s one of the top tourist attractions in Buffalo. Justin and I really enjoyed exploring this site and learning all about its history. Whether you’re a fan of architecture or just a little bit curious, it’s well worth spending an hour or two walking around the Martin House Complex. The microbrewery scene is alive and well in Buffalo. Many of these breweries have unique elements and stories. You simply must sample as many varieties of beer as you can while you’re visiting. Resurgence Brewing Company

Resurgence Brewing Company features a taproom and a large beer garden on site. They offer many rotating styles of beer, as well as a few favorites that are always available. You’ll always find their signature Resurgence IPA at the brewery. Also on tap, the Sponge Candy Stout and Loganberry Wit are original classics at the brewery.

Resurgence’s name is quite fitting. After the brewery opened, the neighborhood continues to experience a resurgence in life. It’s even a metaphor for Buffalo as a whole as it undergoes many positive changes.

Riverworks Brewing Company

Riverworks Brewing Company is the first brewery in the world to operate inside a grain silo. Although branded on the exterior as a Labatt Blue silo, Riverworks brews the beer inside the silo and serves it up at the base of it (the Silo Bar). We sampled the Wheeler Wheat (a traditional German Hefeweizen brewed with wheat and barley), and it was super refreshing.

Riverworks also finds a second interesting way to utilize the old grain silos. There is a rock climbing all on the outside of one set of silos, with one going as high as 50 feet. Justin and I tried climbing the silos – before we drank the beer, of course! It was quite windy that afternoon, on the verge of raining. It made the climb a little scarier and certainly more challenging!

Big Ditch Brewing Company

Big Ditch Brewing Company is one of my favorite breweries in Buffalo. The name “Big Ditch” refers to the Erie Canal, back when the locals were skeptical that it would ever be constructed. However, this “Big Ditch” brought business and prosperity to Buffalo for decades.

I sampled a flight of five beers, including some seasonal ales mixed in with the classics: the Berliner Weisse, Blonde Peach, Cinnamon Apple, FC (Fantastically Crushable), and Fresh Baked. My vote for the best beer goes to the Blonde Peach by far, where they use loads of real peaches in the brewing process.

While you’ll likely be busy all day when you travel to Buffalo, save some energy for the evening. Buffalo has a happening nightlife scene, with several places to hang out and meet new people. If you’re looking for what to do in Buffalo, be sure to head out in the evening for a night on the town.

Larkin Square

The Colored Musicians Club and Jazz Museum is the only remaining and longest continually operating African American Musicians Club in the United States. Checking out a live performance is one of the best and most unique things to do in Buffalo, NY.

Back in early 1900s, the musicians union in Buffalo refused to allow African Americans to join. A separate union was formed, and a social club developed one year later. Members of the social club spent time there after work, using it as a practice space for band rehearsals. Eventually, the Colored Musicians Club found a permanent home, and this provided members with a sense of community.

Many jazz legends passed through the Colored Musicians Club, like Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, and Ella Fitzgerald. It is one of the top places to visit in Buffalo without question.

Today, the club promotes the preservation of jazz in Buffalo, as well as detailing the history of jazz through its museum. Right now, the Colored Musicians Club & Jazz Museum is undergoing a massive renovation, so it’s closed at the moment. It’s going to be incredible when it reopens, stay tuned!

The Burchfield Penney Art Center is a beautiful museum showcasing the works of artists hailing from Western New York. This includes the largest collection of art by famed artist, Charles E. Admire works by favorite artists like Andy Warhol, Vincent Van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, and Jackson Pollock. Surrounding the museum, there are outdoor sculptures that anyone can view on their own. Whether you venture inside the museum or not, you can walk around the property and explore almost 20 unique sculptures .

InnBuffalo off Elmwood

InnBuffalo Off Elmwood is a delightful place to stay in Buffalo, situated in Elmwood Village. It’s a very unique accommodation with an intriguing history. The building is a Victorian home, also known as the Hewitt mansion, converted into a nine room hotel.

Justin and I spent the night in the H.H. Hewitt Master Suite. The room features a king sized bed, comfortable bedding, and luxurious linens. While much of the furnishings are antiques, there are modern amenities like a flatscreen TV with satellite channels, complimentary Wi-Fi, and a Keurig coffee maker in the room. There’s also a complimentary breakfast.

The Richardson Hotel

We stayed at The Richardson Hotel back when it was called Hotel Henry, though I’m so pleased to see it reopen as we thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. It’s a National Historic Landmark set on a campus and 40 acre park designed by Fredrick Law Olmsted.

With its preserved architecture and modern amenities, you’ll stay at one of the most original hotels in the region. This historic site and accommodation describes themselves as a “timeless hotel experience”, and I truly adored staying at this elegant hotel that reminds me a bit of Hogwarts!

Wow! Thanks for completely removing my childhood memories of Buffalo. I left there in 1965 and headed to Arizona. When I was young, I remember Buffalo and Niagara Falls as smelling of countless chemical companies. After reading your review I'm going back for at least an extended visit. Thanks so much. I think you may have missed some gems while you were there. Try to visit restaurants and bars on elmwood, sheas theater, pearl street grill or the chocolate bar downtown. Things like devils hole, the roycroft, Ebenezers alehouse, taffys, vidlers, and the galleria are also great axillary locations to the city. And don't forget things like niagara stadium (or whoever owns it now) , Dunn tire park, and ralph wilson stadium which are some of the heart locations to us buffalonians.

Oh, for sure! We were there for 2 nights and I know there's a lot more to be explored :) We still need to come back down for a few more days! Dying to walk around Elmwood more.

Friendly flight attendants. Comfort plus seats were very comfortable and had lots of leg room. 10A and 10 B.

Our flight to Zurich was delayed by almost 3 hours, so we missed our next flight. There was no indication it would be delayed this much. We were told the gate had changed and then it apparently took over 2 hours to load the "catering" on the plane. We were not compensated in any way for the trouble.

The 1st class male crew member was very pleasant - the short female with round glasses , maybe in 50’s had no personality- never spoke when delivering my food, drink, & never smiled the whole trip! In fact looked annoyed when the boarding proses was happening- I would never hire this woman - unfriendly . Have never dealt with a crew member like her-

A regional sized plane was used for a cross country flight with no overhead bin space. I had to "pink check" my laptop and my medications. I was NOT pleased!!!!

Best airline! Always friendly and welcoming. Skyclub was great and loved the fast free wifi on board. I also love that you can pre-order your meal on the app!

The gate area was incredibly short staffed, with one representative manning 4-5 flights, which caused a 3 hr delay in boarding even though the plane was all ready to leave. Other flights also were delayed because of this. The flight crew was awesome and I feel bad for the only gate worker on call, but Delta needs to hire more employees.

It was a crowded flight. They did the best they could.

Boarding was great. The flight landed early. It took the crew over an hour and a half to bring out drinks. I paid to upgrade my seat to Comfort+ only to be near a crying/screaming baby who was seldom quiet. Noise-cancelling earbuds didn’t even help. Waste of money to upgrade.

Boarding was a sh!t show. JFK BOARDING was awful. The agent called three sections at a time Clogging the area then yelling at people to not block the walk way. How are you going to call delta one , premium select and comfort plus at once and the yell at highest paying passengers. Need to do a lot better and the flight attendants in the galley need to understand that their voices travel. They were talking about others and everyone in the cabin heard them

The main person that was coordinating everything was a short white/light skin Spanish man and he was very rude. It honestly made me feel like it was everyone’s First day at work. His announcements were very not reasonable and they did not make sense. The stewardess on the flight that made the announcements she didn’t even know what she was talking about she sounded inebriated. There were no snacks or drinks on our flight there wasn’t even much turbulence. This flight was not enjoyable nor was it what a Delta flight should be and just this past week I flew with Delta 3 times.

The walk from baggage claim to the taxi is very difficult for older people I will never fly into JFK again. It is physically challenging

Flight was delayed by almost 5 hours. Suitcase was not loaded despite the flight being near empty (my colleagues’ suitcases did reach JFK, unlike mine). Had to argue on phone to get JetBlue to deliver the case to my hotel. Never again

Overall, the flight was better than the flight I took to go to Florida, which had a bunch of problems. The crew is really nice and the plane was new so it had a small problem when we were on the runway, but the flight itself was great. They even made some time back up, which is always a good thing.

Jet Blue keeps getting iit wrong. 4 hour mechanical delay followed by terrible boarding experience. This is my third horrific jet blue flight in 2024. I am going to try to avoid this loser in the sky

After we landed, we were held on the plane for 30 minutes. There was no one at the gate once we landed and we forced to sit on a plan that had already over an hour delayed.

After the morning frenzy of 35 min wait through CLT security at 4;30 AM, it was nice to have a smooth pleasant boarding experience. This 6:30 AM flight was not full. We were able to get seated swiftly and took off promptly. Nice touch they distributed the old fashioned headsets with 8 mm jacks. Snacks were decent and arrival was uneventful.

My window shade didn’t work. So I missed coming into my city. ☹️

Flight was delayed due to the late arrival of the catering truck, which is quite unacceptable. There was a beverage service, but no pretzel, or cookie, or nuts were served in coach.

Not worth the price of premium class ticket paid, felt more like steerage.

Flighty delayed on boarding - then group 1 had to check their carry on bags but groups 3 and beyond could carry bags on - very inconvenient for weekend business trip with no checked baggage. Then delayed on the runway - before take off. No communication from pilot on why or how long. Wifi/Entertainment didn't work for 4+ flight. Upon arrival, attendants announced wrong carousel for baggage claim - everyone was waiting at the wrong place for their checked bags. This was a mess united!

I had a great flight. Everything went smoothly and the flight arrived early.

The flight and boarding were easy peasy. I was traveling with my 4-year-old, so a smooth boarding experience was especially appreciated. My only piece of feedback is really about where our gate was in O'Hare. They've shoved four gates into a tiny corner of the B terminal and there isn't early enough room or seating for everyone. Not United's problem, but did dent the overall experience.

Dinner was okay but the breakfast was not eatable on the flight San Francisco to Zurich.

There was no screens on board AND the WiFi didn’t work. My seat was broken and couldn’t recline so I couldn’t even sleep. The flight attendants didn’t offer anything to make it more comfortable. It was such an old cramped plane, when the person in front of me reclined I couldn’t even open my tray table. All the United ads talk about guaranteeing everyone gets a screen!

Worst experience flying American Airlines. I fly with them often, so I was super disappointed in the service I received at gate 30 in LGA on May 24, mid-day. The flight was delayed twice. I was patiently waiting in the American Airlines lounge when I received the notice on my app that the plane was boarding 45 minutes before its newly re-scheduled take off of 4 pm (from the orginal 1:45 pm then 3:00 pm). It took me 5 min to travel from the lounge to the gate and when I arrived there at 3:20 flight gate attendant told me the flight had closed and that they announced for passengers multiple times. I showed them the notification on my app and they were really rude and unempathetic. The person who rescheduled my flight at customer service wasn't any happier but was at least helpful in getting me on the next flight.

Was lucky to have a employee at the AA checkin counter that had compassion and understood they ordeal that we went through with our original flight being diverted, needing to stay in the aircraft and then flying to the original destination; adding hours to the trip and forcing us to miss our connection and our rebooked connection. She was able to get up on standby on the highest priority on the next flight to the closest airport we need to be at and it all worked out despite being many hours late.

I like the boarding process, it was fast. The seat doesn’t have a TV for a long flight and food wasn’t served, just snacks.

Not being able to purchase my check in baggage online was a negative.

I arrived to the airport 2 hours before my American Airlines flight was scheduled to take off. I have TSA pre-check. The airport was crazy packed when I arrived. After momentarily standing in the pre-check line, the TSA agent said that I am not pre-check. Of course I said that I am because I entered my KTN number on all my traveling sites and programs. I had to get out of line and go back to the AA counter to discover that American Airlines did not add my KTN to my boarding pass. I had to call TSA to find out my number, then have AA enter it onto my boarding pass. The emblem would not load onto my boarding pass. By this time, I decided to use my Clear in order to get through TSA but the line was ridiculous long. By the time I made through TSA, I missed my 11:08am flight and was re-booked for the 5:30pm. This is after the AA employee told me I should have gotten to the airport early. AA use to be a dependable airline not I use them only if I have too.

Horrible people at the gate, they force me to check in my carry on, even thought no one behind me has to do it. I had to get out of the airport in NY to get my bag and go thru security again on my way to Honk Kong. The worst part is the employee threatened me with loosing the flights if don’t comply.

Cut off carry ons, had to check, got on and there was plenty of bin space. Disappointing.

FRONTIER SUCKS! The agent downstairs tricked me into booking, just to get to the gate. At the gate, they told me they couldn't help. I then called Customer Service. They and the gate attendants kept blaming each other. Neither side was willing to help the customer.

The agent at check-in was strident, unwelcoming, and condescending to customers ahead of me.

Flight was delay 9hrs and nothing was provided at airport, had to go and get a room to sleep in, paid for Uber back and fort with no offers until we landed back home a 1hr later for a $75 voucher for a future flight.

Didn't like anything..entire crew was very rude to everyone on the flight. Plane old and the trays fall down on you the while time you're flying. Charged more for a carry on bag than for the plane ticket itself. Did make it from point a to point b, but worth the extra money to fly with another airline

It was delayed 9 hours for operational reasons, despite the plane arriving to the airport on time.

I am very disappointed with Frontier Airlines. They cancelled our flight because they couldn't find a crew member, and then didn't get us to our connecting flight. We had to cancel our whole vacation. We were promised flight and hotel vouchers, but they never sent them.

9hrs delay and didn’t provided anything until after flight landed $75 voucher for fiuture travel no meals or anything.

It was ridiculously hard to check in for the flight, and Frontier charged us a LOT of money to have a carry on suitcase, and then told everyone we could not carry on bags and had to check them through at the gate, and didn't refund the extra money we paid to have the suitcase as carry on.

I had a terrible experience with Frontier. I arrived before the 60 minute cut off and was told that Frontier has a two hour window for bags. I was then told the next available flight wasn’t until the end of the day (I had booked a 6am flight). I took a look around and saw other people being told that they could not board their flights or that they had to pay additional fees. I opted to rebook on American Airlines. There’s absolutely no straightforward way to contact Frontier, so this ticket was a complete waste of money. Oh - and the kicker is that the lady lied about the two hour cut off.

Chestnut Ridge Park Eternal Flame

The “eternal flame” at Chestnut Ridge Park in Orchard Park, NY isn’t eternally burning. But it’s still a pretty cool natural phenomenon. Here’s the deal:

It’s located at Eternal Flame Falls, a small waterfall in the Shale Creek Preserve section of the park.
A natural gas seep behind the falls fuels the flame. It creates a small flame, usually around 4-8 inches tall when ignited.
While it’s called an “eternal flame,” it can sometimes go out. Luckily, it can also be re-lit.
The waterfall itself is temperamental and only flows heavily in early spring or after significant rain. During high water flow, the water can obscure the flame.

Here are some additional things to know:

The hike down to the falls can be a bit challenging. So wear proper footwear and be careful, especially on the descent.
The main trail to the Eternal Flame Falls recently reopened in August 2023. It includes new steps and railings to make it a bit easier.
Chestnut Ridge Park itself is a 1,200-acre park with scenic overlooks and other attractions.

If you’re looking for a unique natural wonder in western New York, the Eternal Flame Falls are definitely worth checking out.

Just be prepared for a bit of a hike and the possibility that the flame might not be lit.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is gearing up for unprecedented passenger volumes at airport security checkpoints nationwide during this summer’s travel season, which began this past Memorial Day weekend and runs through Labor Day. On Friday, May 24, TSA set a new record for the busiest day in its 22-year history, screening 2,951,163 people at airport security checkpoints nationwide.

At Buffalo Niagara International Airport, TSA’s Federal Security Director for Upstate New York, Bart R. Johnson, emphasized the agency’s readiness to handle the increased travel volumes. “We are coordinating with the airport, airlines, and other travel partners, and we are ready to handle this summer’s busy travel volumes,” said Johnson. He advised travelers to arrive at the airport early and noted the implementation of new credential authentication technology units at the checkpoint, encouraging travelers to follow TSA officers’ guidance.

Buffalo Niagara International Airport has recently deployed the latest generation of Credential Authentication Technology (CAT) at its security checkpoints. This new technology confirms the validity of a traveler’s identification (ID) and verifies their flight information in real-time. The updated CAT units, known as CAT-2, not only scan a traveler’s photo ID but also capture a real-time photo of the traveler, comparing it to the photo on the ID. Once the match is confirmed, a TSA officer verifies the traveler, allowing them to proceed through the checkpoint without needing to exchange a boarding pass. The photos are then deleted.

The CAT-2 units are equipped with cameras on tablets and are used to match the face of the person standing at the checkpoint with the face that appears on the traveler’s ID, such as a driver’s license or passport. This technology enhances detection capabilities for identifying fraudulent documents at the security checkpoint. “Identity verification of every traveler prior to flying is a key step in the security screening process,” said Johnson. “This technology enhances detection capabilities for identifying fraudulent IDs and increases efficiency by automatically verifying a passenger’s identification.”

An additional feature of the CAT-2 units is their touchless operation. Passengers insert their ID into the unit, look at the camera, and if the ID is validated, they proceed through the checkpoint. This touchless process reduces touchpoints and speeds up the screening process. Despite the use of these units, travelers still need to check-in with their airline in advance and bring their boarding pass to their gate to show the airline representative before boarding their flight.

“This latest technology helps ensure that we know who is boarding flights,” Johnson added. “Credential authentication plays an important role in passenger identity verification. It improves a TSA officer’s ability to validate a traveler’s photo identification while also identifying any inconsistencies associated with fraudulent travel documents.”

The system also confirms the passenger’s flight status by verifying that the individual is ticketed to fly out of an airport on that same day. With these measures in place, TSA is committed to ensuring a safe and efficient travel experience for all passengers during this busy summer season.

We’re not entirely sure how the weekend weather is going to shake out, but either way there’s a whole lot going on, so let’s get to it.

The Resurgam Music and Arts Festival is Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Ocean Gateway marine terminal and surrounding areas. The list of performers is about 17 miles long and includes Oshima Brothers Band and professional hula hoop and circus artist Nettie Loops.

Another musician you can see at Resurgam is Toby McAllister from Sparks The Rescue. McAllister unpacked his perfect Maine day for us, and it includes a hike in Grafton Notch and a stop at Puzzle Mountain Bakery in Newry for cookies.

There’s plenty else cooking this weekend , including Yoga in the Park on Saturday and the Walk the Working Waterfront tour. Both are in Portland.
