Class A RVs With Motorcycle Storage:

You might not immediately associate a Class A RV with having motorcycle storage.

There are indeed a few Class A RVs that have motorcycle storage facilities. Often these RVs are designed for functionality alongside spaciousness and high-end amenities.

With how sturdy Class A RVs actually are, it makes sense that some would have storage for outdoor toys such as motorcycles. Most of the time, these RVs will come with rear access ramps as the motorcycle storage or toy storage area is located at the back.

Let’s now have a look at some Class A RVs that feature motorcycle storage so that you can decide if this RV category would work for you and your toys.

1. The Newmar Canyon Star 3747 RV

travel trailer with bike garage

If you’re looking for a Class A RV that’s noteworthy for all the right reasons, then have a look at the Newmar Canyon Star.

This RV has a range of impressive features and amenities to keep you comfortable and entertained while traveling the paths less traveled. The RV is slightly more expensive with a rough starting price of $170,000, but it is still reasonable considering what you will get.

The Newmar Canyon Star has a sleeping capacity for six people and has three slide outs that provide ample space for all possessions. With a length of 38 ft, this RV has a garage or storage area with a ramp where you can store your motorcycle or ATV. The rear of this Class A RV is actually designed specifically for ATVs and normal motorcycle clearance.

You can load up and store your outdoor toys easily and safely, both quickly and efficiently.

If we look at the interior, the first thing that we notice is the glazed maple cabinetry with a matte finish.

This sets off the RV’s interior color theme beautifully and complements the beautiful vinyl dark wood flooring. The lounge furniture is beige, and the kitchen countertops are white. This continues the brown and white color theme that’s present throughout this Class A RV.

The sofa in the lounge section can seat two people comfortably, and across from it is the dinette area, and alongside it is the kitchen. Inside the kitchen is plenty of cabinetry and modern appliances galore. There is a residential-sized fridge, a microwave, and a stove.

The kitchen comes with a sink with its own faucet and a stove cover that allows additional countertop space.

In the lounge, there is even a LED television where you can watch your favorite shows while relaxing after an action-packed day of activities. The dinette area, although small, is spacious and can seat two at a time. When we had down a passage, we come to the bedroom and bathroom section of this RV.

There is a private bedroom with a king-sized bed and cupboards for all your storage needs.

With this model, the bathroom is spacious and comes with a shower, wash hand basin with stainless steel sink, and a residential-style toilet. In this RV, a washer and dryer area is separate, and a half bathroom with a toilet and sink.

2. Tiffin Phaeton 40QKH RV

The 2018 Tiffin Phaeton is a slightly older model, but this bestseller has earned its reputable reputation.

You can expect to pay an estimated $230,000 for a second-hand model in good condition. For this price, you will get not only exceptional features and amenities but plenty of storage space. This 41 ft long Class A RV comes with four slide outs and an incredible accommodation capacity to sleep up to nine people.

For those who don’t like the hassle involved with manual ramp systems when storing their motorcycles in their RVs, the Tiffin Phaeton 40QKH has an easy to operate hydraulic motorcycle lift. With two storage slides in this motorhome, you won’t have any issue with space.

You will be able to store not only your motorcycle but all your other outdoor equipment too.

Should the sun be blazing outside, and you find you would prefer to stay indoors, you can enjoy a cooler climate with the three-zone airconditioner units that this model features. Another feature that is attention-grabbing for those not fans of LP  gas or propane is that this unit is completely electric.

There are USB ports throughout the RV, and for those who love a modern flair, there are touch screen control panels in the Tiffin Phaeton.

If you favor technological advancements and features in RVs, then the Tiffin Phaeton has a few tech features that are sure to impress you. There are Winegard internet and communications, a powerful high-end inverter to ensure consistent power supply, and there are even heated floors for those winter months.

You will even find that this model has heated bays and an electric water heater.

The interior of this model is breathtaking.

The dark wood cabinetry complements the gorgeous neutral tone furniture and marble look flooring theme throughout the RV. This RV is more luxurious than it first appears with leatherette sofa couches and dining room table chairs.

The lounge area and kitchen are situated in the front of the RV , and both areas are spacious and well lit with LED lighting.

Inside the kitchen, you will find a stunning countertop area with gorgeous backsplash tile work. The kitchen features a large full-size refrigerator that has a water dispenser and ice-making facilities. There is also an induction stove, a microwave, and a dishwasher for added convenience when cleaning up after meals.

The master bedroom has an adjustable king size bed and a washer and dryer. Inside the bathroom are a rain head shower, skylights, and electric and diesel hot water capabilities. The shower itself is large, and there is a toilet and wash hand basin.

You will want to spend time in this bathroom with its pleasing aesthetic and spacious shower that ensures you have a comfortable experience.

Toy Haulers With Motorcycle Storage:

With so many options available on the RV market for toy haulers that come with motorcycle storage, choosing the right one can be difficult.

Many RV manufacturers sell toy haulers with ATV storage and motorcycle storage, not to mention space to stow away all the other outdoor equipment you may have.

If you are a person who enjoys hauling multiple motorcycles or ATVs for frequent weekend getaways or vacations, then a toy hauler might be the best kind of RV category for you to consider. Toy haulers are not only trailers, though; they have the classic feel of a Class A RV with often more storage facilities for all your outdoor items.

What’s great about toy haulers is the garage can more than likely be closed off from the living area of the RV, or you could even use his storage bay as another camping area.

Below we will look at a few toy haulers with motorcycle storage:

3. Forest River XLR Boost 27QB RV

travel trailer with bike garage

This toy hauler by brand Forest River is slightly more expensive than others on the market with a rough starting price of $52,000.

However, your unlikely to regret your decision if you’re looking for an RV with lots of garage space. The 2021 XLR Boost has no slides, is 31 ft long, and can comfortably sleep, four people. Without slides, you may be thinking; surely, there isn’t space for a motorcycle. This assumption would be incorrect.

With a 14 ft 6 inch garage, this toy hauler has plenty of space for you to store your motorcycle as well as many other outdoor items. This toy hauler could be perfect for those who want to store and cart with them multiple motorcycles or AVs when on a trip.

The ramp is easy to operate as it has a spring assist function, so you won’t have a problem loading and offloading all your toys.

Additionally, there is a 30-gallon external fuel storage unit, so you can enjoy riding your motorcycle or ATV for extended periods of time.

Toy haulers are not as luxurious as some other RV classes, but that doesn’t mean you won’t have excellent features and comfortable furnishings.

In this RV, the master bedroom is located in the front and features a queen-sized bed. For convenience, you will have two bedside tables to place any electronics you might want to keep handy.

That bathroom is designed with space consciousness in mind. The toilet has a foot flush mechanism and is located in the bathroom corner opposite the corner shower unit.

There is also a bathroom sink and some wooden storage cupboards for all your travel toiletries.

Although small, the lounge and kitchen area has all the necessities and even a few that you could consider luxurious. There are an LED television and an electric fireplace to keep you warm on chilly mornings while you get ready for the day and two standard roll-over sofas.

In the kitchen, you will find a decorative backsplash and white countertops. There is also a kitchen sink with a faucet and a fridge, stove, and microwave.

4. Cruiser MPG 2700TH RV

travel trailer with bike garage

Are you looking for a budget-friendly toy hauler RV with the capability to store your motorcycle while out and about?

If the answer is yes, then the 2021 Cruiser MPG might be worth a look. This toy hauler has one slide and can comfortably accommodate a sleeping capacity of four people.

This toy hauler’s rough starting price is around $33,000, a competitive price point in this RV category.

The cargo storage area is located at the back of the toy hauler and is spacious. With the 13 ft storage space, you can easily store all your toys, including a motorcycle or two.

The ramp door is easy to operate ad comes down easily when you need to load up all your outdoor extracurricular items.

Inside, this RV interior is done with functionality in mind, but the flooring is a beautiful wood vinyl, and the appliances are state of the art.

The grey tone wooden cabinetry is complemented beautifully by the glossy white marble look countertops.

The lounge area is small, but there are two recliner style chairs and lots of space for walking.

There are a large refrigerator, a microwave, and a stove with an oven. Below the television is another kitchen counter space with cupboards, and the kitchen sink is built into the countertop and comes with a faucet. This model also has a small dinette area towards the back that can seat four.

The seating also folds out into additional sleeping accommodations.

In front of the toy hauler, you will find a private bedroom and a bathroom. Inside the bedroom is a king-sized bed, and there is also a dresser and wardrobe.

The bathroom in this toy hauler is on the small side, but you will have everything you might need. There is a shower, a toilet, and a wash hand basin.

Additionally, this toy hauler comes with a 20ft awning that allows for an outside living room for those evenings you want to be sociable in the outdoors.

People are starting to learn about bike campers in the USA. Yet, in Europe, these micro campers have been around for years. In the “Land of Motors,” our growing population of cyclists who don’t own a car are learning that they can enjoy the RV lifestyle. Using a bike camper in American cities and trails throughout our country allows them to see and do more.

In this discussion, we’ll show you some of the best bike campers that are available in the USA that you can purchase. Some are DIY bike camper trailers you can build yourself, and others come ready-made. Since the bicycle camper is still a new concept in the U.S., you’ll discover what they are and the realities of towing one with your pedal and e-bike.

What’s a Bike Camper?

What is a Bike Camper

Bike campers are one or two-person dry mobile shelters that connect to pedal or electric bicycles. These campers may have small batteries for lighting or charging mobile devices. Their key advantages are that they are a step or two above a tent, have storage, and give you some creature comforts.

As you explore the many bike camper designs, you’ll see that they come in three primary shapes. Many European companies make them either a fat-tire teardrop bike camper form or a half-circle. Do-It-Yourself (DIY) and some manufacturers use a rectangular box with a rounded roof that looks like a neighborhood mailbox.

The key to a bike camper build is to make them the most ultra-lite travel trailer on the planet. Pre-built bike camper frames generally use wood, but some manufacturers use aluminum tubing. Exterior camper shells can be canvas, fluted plastic, a hard shell polymer, or nylon. Mattresses for the sleeping space use moisture-resistant foam.

The majority of bike camper manufacturers exist in Europe. Bike trailers in the U.S. mainly exist as small versions for cargo, children, or pets. However, bike campers in America are finding their place both in the DIY and prefab sectors. If you’re interested in paving the way into this exciting new way of #BikeLife, here are some bike campers in America you can choose.

1. Wooden Widget Foldavan – Best DIY Bike Camper Plan

  • Length: 7.10 ft.
  • Height: 4.11 ft.
  • Open Width: 3.9 ft.
  • Closed Width: 2.5 ft
  • UVW: 66.14 lbs.
  • CCC: 165 lbs.
  • GVWR: 440 lbs

Wooden Widget is a french company that sells blueprints around the world. The owner, Benjy, started as a boat builder using locally sourced materials. He expanded into many other sectors, including bikes and the Foldavan folding bicycle caravan (the European word for a travel trailer).

When you buy this DIY bike camper plan , it comes with a guide on using the standard tools, epoxies, and everything else you’ll need to build the micro bike camper trailer. Benjy designed the Foldavan, so anyone at any skill level can create one themselves. Wooden Widget will also plant five trees for every purchase customers make.

As you see in the video, the example bike camper uses a white outer material, but the other two-person sleeper used a piece of green patterned fabric for the roof instead. Since the Foldavan folds up, you may want to have your traveling companion use a cargo bike trailer for your essential accessories and supplies.

2. Wide Path Bicycle Camper – Most like a Camper Trailer

Wide Path Camper Exterior is one of the best bike campers in the USA

  • Folded Length: 4.89 ft.
  • Open Length: 9.35 ft.
  • Height: 5.74 ft.
  • Width: 3.18 ft.
  • UVW: 88 lbs.
  • CCC: 10.59 cu.ft.
  • GVWR: 120 lbs.

You may have read about this manufactured bike camper before. The Wide Path Camper Model 3 has had a lot of coverage here in the U.S. This Denmark company was the first to export its bike camper in the American marketplace. It’s the most RV-like compared to its contemporaries and has bigger siblings towable by compact cars.

When you pivot down the bike camper’s shell, the interior living space gives you an incredible amount of room. Users can set up the dinette table inside our out. The folding cot inside can stretch out for dual sleeping or fold into a bench for two on one side of the four-person table. The standard mattress is 2-inches, but the luxury package adds an extra inch.

When you purchase the Wide Path Camper bike trailer , you can add the solar package, a fold-up panel that connects to a battery. Other accessories include an attachable awning, an outdoor furniture kit, and additional decor features with the luxury package.

3. Nomad Bike Camper – Inexpensive DIY Bike Camper

Nomad Bike Camper Exterior

  • Length: 6.5 ft.
  • Height:  4.2 ft.
  • Width:   3.2 ft.
  • UVW: 60 lbs.

Paul Elkin’s Nomad Bike Camper is one of many ideas in his da Vinci Notebook sketchpad. The inspiration came from an emergency homeless shelter he saw, but he let his creative mind reimagine it. The Washington State resident used locally sourced, repurposed materials to take the design off the page, bringing the DIY bike camper into America’s bike paths.

The residential mailbox-shaped bike camper frame has a rounded top and front for aerodynamics. Elkin used 1×2 wood studs for the chassis and fluted plastic campaign signs as the outer shell.

The near-weightless polypropylene plastic’s rigidity, UV resistance, and waterproof nature was the perfect building material for the bike camper’s shell. (also, it was free after election day). In addition, Elkin used zip ties to hold everything together, saving weight on hardware pieces.

Elkin insulated the bike camper with radiant sheeting and sealed it with duct tape. He made the most out of the fluted plastic by creating overhead cabinets and counters. Plastic bins added storage space throughout the bike trailer. He even installed a single burner propane stove using aluminum heat shields with a one-pound bottle.

Paul’s total cost to build his Nomad Bike Camper was $150, including the used $20 bike. He sells the 61-page bike camper PDF plans via PayPal for $20. The instructions include drawings, photos, and written instructions that walk you through the DIY bike camper build process. You’ll need basic hand tools, a drill, a conduit bender, a creative mind, and the will to see it through.

4. BikeStream RV – Bike Camper Built in the USA

  • Height: 4.2 ft.
  • Width: 3.2 ft.
  • UVW: 70 lbs.

When Paul Elkins built his Nomad Bike Camper in 2015, he created his website to tell his story and share his various ideas with the world, including his DIY bike camper plans. That summer, the founders of BikeStream RV saw great potential in the design. Located in the “RV Capital of the World,” they made an exclusive agreement with Paul and invested six years on R & D.

Today, BikeStream RV has bike campers and cargo trailers that sell in several bike shops and outdoor stores in the greater Michiana area (Northeast Indiana and Southwest Michigan).

Customers can customize the interiors, choose from 14 colors, and add their unique design to the exterior. For example, look how great maize and blue compliment each other on the bike camper video above!

If you’d like to take one of these $2,395 bike campers for a trial run, BikeStream RV leads three all-inclusive “hands-on” trips a year. Then, after the adventure, if you’ve fallen in love with your bike camper, they’ll deduct the cost of the journey from the purchase price of the bike trailer .

5. Kamp-Rite Midget Bushtrekka – Super Lightweight Bicycle Camper Trailer

great lightweight bicycle camper in the USA

  • Open L x W x H: 30 x 32 x 6 inches
  • Closed L x W x H: 90 x 32 x 40 inches
  • UVW: 56 lbs.
  • CCC: 4.3 cu.ft.

Kamp-Rite’s Midget Bushtrekka bicycle camper was a fantastic idea for on or off-road multi-day bike hiking. The tandem axle micro bike trailer looked like a high-sitting bike cargo trailer with a thicker top. When it was time to pull over for the night, users would set the four corner jacks down and unfold the 600-denier rip-resistant nylon tent.

Users could lift the expanded tent without collapsing it to access the storage bay if needed. Collapsing the tent the following day was a matter of pulling the aluminum poles towards the center of the bike camper. The weather wouldn’t be much of an issue since the nylon had a weather coating to enhance the moisture resistance.

You’ll find the Midget Bushtrekka bike camper listed on Amazon , but you won’t find it on Kamp-Rite’s website . It could have been due to poor sales performance or an issue with the axles. Yet, with the growing appeal of bike campers in America, we could see Kamp-Rite improve the design and release a new version. Meanwhile, you may find used Midget Bushtrekka’s online.

How Much Weight Can You Pull With a Bicycle?

You’ll be surprised how much weight you can pull with a bicycle. Looking to the past, rickshaw bikes and street vendors with concession bicycles have populated city streets worldwide for decades. Using thicker frames similar to a mountain bike and all-terrain hybrid variants, the average person can tow around 300 pounds on a bicycle.

The average person in good physical shape could tow that much on level pavement on a calm day at 10 Miles Per Hour (mph). The same person can pull 600 pounds at eight mph at a strenuous level.

Climbing a hill requires much more effort. A hill with a 2% grade requires three times the effort with 300 pounds. The same hill with 600 pounds requires 4.5 times as much physical power. Luckily, if you have a multi-speed gear system on your bike, the 18-22 inch gears will give you that low-end torque assistance you need. These gears will help you conquer those hills without deflating all of your energy.

Electric bikes and bike camper trailers pair well together. But, like their car and truck counterparts, the heavier the trailer, the less distance you’ll get from the battery on your e-bike. Learn more about this in RVBlogger’s June 2021 issue of RV Camping Magazine .

It’s a good idea to upgrade your e-bike’s battery and have a spare on hand. If you’re on a multi-day adventure, have a solar generator with a portable solar panel in your bike camper to keep your batteries charged.

The micro bike campers themselves have an Unloaded Vehicle Weight (UVW, a.k.a. “Dry Weight”) that ranges between 50- 150 pounds. Depending on the model and customizations, the Cargo Carrying Capacity (CCC) can be as little as 80 pounds or as much as 180 pounds.

You could buy DIY bike camper plans and build them with repurposed materials for under $50. The other extreme is to order a manufactured model for around $5,000.

How Do You Camp With a Bike Camper?

The outdoor experience with a bike camper has a lot in common with small teardrop trailers. Like the Little Guy MyPod for cars, you can’t stand up in a bike camper, but you can sit. The floor has a foam mattress that acts as your sitting and sleeping area. The sidewalls have storage space and surface areas.

Unlike tiny teardrops, micro bike campers usually have space for one person. People have kept themselves occupied by installing Bluetooth speakers, lighting, and other ultra-low wattage components that use small power sources. You’ll even see a few people install a single burner propane stove with a removable one-pound bottle.

What Do I Need for an Overnight Bike Camper Trip?

Best Bike camper in the US for an Overnight Bike Trip

To successfully use an enclosed bike camper, minimalism is the key. You don’t have to wear the same clothing for more than one day but micro bike campers are great for a weekend bike hike. You can balance your essential accessories by attaching your water bottles and mobile devices to your bike frame.

The other essential points are safety and security when heading out for your bike camping excursion. For example, you’ll want to place reflective signs and tape on the back and sides of your bike trailer so others can see you at night.

As we stated above, you could keep a pace of 10 mph with 300 pounds, but most veteran cyclists will tell you that’s a slower pace, and rarely you’ll find a flat trail. So you’ll want to keep your Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW= UVW + CCC) as lightweight as possible.

You’ll also find that some of these bike campers have a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR, the total weight they can safely hold) under 400 pounds. Increasing the GVWR on DIY bike camper projects can be as simple as substituting chassis and frame components with stronger materials.

As the days get closer to the trip, keep an eye on the weather report. Bike camper shells can handle rain because of their round roofs, but you don’t want to get stuck in a storm. Also, make sure the route you’re taking allows overnight bike campers.

A big issue that’s given the traditional RV community a headache is the cities and counties cracking down on crime and homelessness. Camping in certain commercial parking lots, parks and other areas now forbids RVs from staying overnight.

Some of these places require a permit to stay overnight. No one wants to be woken up at 3 a.m. because a law enforcement officer wants to know what you’re doing there.

Where Are the Best Places To Use a Bike Camper in the USA?

The best places to use a bike camper in the USA have some intersections with traditional RV categories. Many National Forests and other public land areas have bike trails like nothing you’ve ever seen.

There are many apps and websites online that help bikepackers plan routes, find accommodations, and locate other resources along the way. For example, the Travel Channel lists the best bike trails in the U.S., like Denali National Park in Alaska, Oregon Timber Trail, and Virginia Mountain Bike Trail.

No matter where you take your bike camper in America, make sure you prepare yourself properly and learn more about the camping lifestyle. RV Blogger has some great articles about camping safely and excellent tips no matter what type of rig you’re towing. Also, if you need some essential accessories camping gear, we have some great recommendations on our RVBlogger Amazon page we use ourselves.

So, enjoy your bike camper adventure; thanks for reading, and we’ll see you next time!

8 Travel Trailers that Fit in a Garage

December 15, 2022 by August Croft

Travel Trailers that Fit in a Garage

All of our reviews are based on exhaustive research, industry experience, and whenever possible, hands-on testing. When you make a purchase using one of our chosen links we’ll get a small percentage of the proceeds. This supports the site and keeps Jeffsetter running. You can read more here .

Storing an RV is often one of the most challenging aspects of owning one, so you may be wondering if there are any travel trailers that fit in a garage. Knowing where you plan on keeping your RV before you purchase one is a good idea, especially when you consider the fact that winter storage of your RV is likely best for its overall maintenance and care.

Whether you plan on storing your RV in an attached residential garage, a carport, or on your street, there are a few things to consider before you purchase something. But what might those considerations be, and how can you find a travel trailer that fits in a garage without too much fuss?

In this article, we will go over everything you need to know about storing a travel trailer in a garage, including giving you some options that are compact and convenient enough to keep in the average garage or carport. Protecting your RV from the elements is important, especially when you aren’t using your RV. Here’s everything you need to know about travel trailer garage storage.

Types of Garages for Storing Your RV

If you don’t currently have a garage you may be seeking some options for RV storage, including some potential carport or bay storage. While it will depend on your property and the potential alterations that you can do to it, there are many different ways to store an RV safely and efficiently .

Here are various types of garages for storing your new travel trailer.

Residential Attached Garage

If you’re lucky enough to have a residential attached garage, this is a great location to store your RV if you don’t keep a car or other vehicle in it. Depending on whether you have a single, double, or even larger type of attached garage, the average garage measurements begin at 12 by 20 ft.

Many residential garages vary in terms of their height, especially when you consider the fact that some garages have lofted or overhead storage options. However, the average residential garage is anywhere from 18 to 25 ft tall, so keep all of these measurements in mind as you shop. This is the first place to begin when it comes to finding a travel trailer that will fit in your residential attached garage!

Again, you may have a double or even triple-car garage, leading to a much larger interior space. This likely won’t affect the overall height of your garage, but every residential attached garage is unique. I highly recommend measuring your own space so that you know your precise dimensions and can shop with this knowledge in mind.

Residential Detached Garage

Just like a residential attached garage, detached garages offer a safe and secure place to keep your RV, no matter the season. The dimensions of a residential detached garage are similar if not identical to the attached garage measurements. However, you may have a detached garage with a bit more height given that it isn’t attached to your residential home and doesn’t need to match that particular roofline.

You may find that your detached garage is more or less convenient when it comes to parking your RV, as the location of the storage area might be easier to back into. However, detached garages do not offer as much security as an attached garage, and they do not offer as much convenience.

Your detached garage may also be less protected from the elements compared to your attached garage, so keep this in mind if you live in an area that experiences freezing weather during the winter. Winterizing your travel trailer is a must , and this is especially true if your travel trailer storage area gets below freezing!

Typically simple in construction and attached in some way to a residential home, carports make excellent options for storing a travel trailer. However, these areas are typically open and unsecured, which is definitely something to keep in mind if you are worried about protecting your personal property.

Speaking of open, keeping a travel trailer in a carport likely means that it is visible at all times. If you are looking for an option that doesn’t require you to stare down your travel trailer day in and day out, you may want to find a more enclosed option. This also speaks to security and keeping your personal possessions more private. You may want your RV to be less visible to avoid potential theft.

Carports are useful for keeping rain, snow, and debris off of your travel trailer. You may have a carport that is located behind a gate or a fence, likely giving you a bit more security than average. At the end of the day, a carport is simply a semi-enclosed area to keep your vehicles, and the average carport is likely large enough to keep most travel trailers in without much hassle.

Awning or Portable Garage

If you don’t have anything but a driveway, you can always purchase an awning or a portable garage for your RV. These options are unique in that you can find just about any shape or size to fit your rig. It’s also convenient that you can break them down and set them up when you need them, though most are designed to be a fairly permanent option for your home.

If you don’t have any other storage options for your RV, purchasing an awning or portable garage is an ideal solution. However, it’s important to note that these can cost a fair amount of money. If your main concern is protecting your RV from the elements, you may want to just purchase an RV cover instead of an entire awning or portable garage.

While RV covers have their own issues and need to be set up properly in order to work, they are significantly cheaper than an awning or a portable garage. This is especially true if you are shopping for a carport or driveway cover that is metal and more permanent, as these can often cost over $1,000.

Barn or Outbuilding

If you have a barn or a number of larger outbuildings on your property, you may consider simply storing your travel trailer or RV in one of those. While this is likely more complicated than you are hoping for, converting a barn or an outbuilding into an RV storage space can be one of the best options for storing a travel trailer.

Not only will you be able to store your travel trailer in a location that is secure and discreet, but you may also take advantage of the opportunity to convert the entire area into your travel trailer workshop. RVs need consistent maintenance and having a dry location to work in is a luxury most RV owners don’t get.

Again, this may be outside your budget and not something you’re interested in doing, but if you have any outbuildings you aren’t using, why not store a travel trailer in one?

Storing Your Travel Trailer in a Driveway or on the Street

At the end of the day, you can only store your travel trailer in your own driveway or even on your residential street. Keep in mind that your travel trailer will be uncovered and left secure with either of these options. However, these options are also free! Your driveway is an especially good place to keep a travel trailer if you have one, as this is out of the way and on your own property.

Keeping your RV or travel trailer on the street outside of your house may seem like a good option at first, but it all depends on where you live. Security is very important to keep in mind for this option, as your travel trailer is out in the open, likely sitting for months at a time. Plus, keeping an RV on a public street isn’t always legal, depending on where you live.

You may also run into the nosy neighbor that doesn’t like that you’re keeping your RV outside of your house, on the street where they might have a problem with it. Travel trailers can also get in the way of garbage and mail services. Unfortunately, given that it is technically public property, if you live in an area that doesn’t appreciate where you are keeping your travel trailer, you will likely have to move it.

Types of Travel Trailers that Fit in a Garage

Not every type of RV will fit in a garage, especially travel trailers. Fifth wheels will not fit in the average storage area, given their height and overall size. However, there are some types of travel trailers that will indeed fit in a garage. Here are some options for you to consider.

Pop-Up Trailers

Relatively inexpensive and surprisingly large enough for the whole family, pop-up trailers are a great option for storing in a garage. Arguably, pop-up trailers were invented to assist RV owners in RV storage solutions, given the fact that these travel trailers collapse when not in use.

You can find many different types of pop-up trailers, but the main identifier is a trailer that has the ability to transform and get smaller when not in use. Pop-up trailers can be made from fiberglass, but they typically have tent or fabric materials involved to help keep them compact. Some pop-up trailers are simply tents on wheels, something that may interest you if you are seeking an extremely lightweight option as well.

The good news is, the average pop-up travel trailer is no more than 15 ft long and 5-6 ft tall when fully collapsed. You may even find shorter options, giving you more peace of mind when you park it in your garage. There’s nothing more stressful than getting close to hitting the top of your garage door as your backing in!

A-Frame Trailers

Depending on the manufacturer, you may be able to find an A-frame travel trailer that fits in a garage or carport. Most of these unique trailers are designed to collapse when on the road, typically at a convenient height of 5-6 feet tall. This makes them aerodynamic as well as easy to store.

Once you reach camp or wherever you plan on setting up your travel trailer, it is designed to open up. This style of camper has a taller ceiling on average compared to other pop-up options, given the fact that the A-frame shape adds a bit of extra height. However, most of these travel trailers are fairly compact and small overall, likely not ideal for the average family.

Having a pop-up option with hard sides and a fiberglass roof may be appealing to those of you seeking a more durable pop-up option. While they may be more expensive, you’ll have better insulation and long-term use from a travel trailer with hard sides than one with fabric sides.

Teardrop Trailers

While some teardrop travel trailers can get a little tall for the average garage, this may be a great option for a solo adventurer or couple. Teardrop travel trailers are unique in that they offer RV owners a comfortable sleeping area inside, with an outdoor kitchen typically located on the back of the rig.

There are also a number of teardrop travel trailer options that are lighter than two thousand pounds , making this an easy RV to tow as well as store. However, keep in mind that most teardrop trailers are too small to accommodate a bathroom or a proper dining or living area. Some options may convert to give you as many RV amenities as possible, but these rigs will not be as developed as a standard travel trailer.

The shape of the travel trailers can make some of them aerodynamic and easy to tow, something that may interest those of you worried about your gas mileage. Plus, many teardrop travel trailers offer pop-out elements or unique storage solutions, offering you much more space than you likely assumed!

Standard Travel Trailers

Depending on the size of your garage or RV storage area, you may be able to fit a standard-size travel trailer in your chosen location. However, it’s important to know the measurements of your desired travel trailer as well as the location in which you plan on storing it. Some RV manufacturers are more efficient in their measurements than others, and you don’t want to mix up an interior living length with an exterior length!

When it comes to standard travel trailer measurements, the average width of these RVs is anywhere from 7 to 8 ft across. Height also varies, but you are likely looking at an option that is over 10 ft tall, with roughly 6 ft of interior height. Finally, length is the most variable factor on a standard travel trailer, as this is where RV manufacturers add square footage.

Depending on what you are looking for, standard travel trailers range in length from 13 ft to well over 35 ft. Obviously, a 40 ft long travel trailer won’t fit in the average garage or storage area, so make sure you know exactly what you are looking for and what you can feasibly fit before you fall in love!

If you’ve taken your measurements for whatever you plan on storing your travel trailer, it’s time to check out your possible options. While unique and unlikely to sleep more than 4 individuals, all of these travel trailers should fit in a garage, carport, or even your converted barn!

Let’s take a closer look at these options now.

Best for Residential Garages: Safari Condo Alto

  • Teardrop shape is aerodynamic and unique
  • Lightweight model makes it easy to tow without sacrificing interior space
  • Unique in its design and offers interior design options
  • Fairly expensive for a travel trailer, especially one of this size

Teardrop-shaped and complete with a unique roof that allows more light into the space, the Alto by Safari Condo is a great choice for storing in your residential garage. The dimensions should fit in just about any standard attached or detached garage, depending on your home. Ranging anywhere from $50-55k, this option is a bit more expensive than average but has a lot to offer.

Safari Condo offers a few different options in terms of its convertible and collapsible travel trailer choices, but the smallest Alto option measures 83 inches when closed. When you reach camp, the unique roofline of this particular travel trailer extends to over 100 inches tall, giving you plenty of interior headroom and living space.

This is a fantastic teardrop travel trailer for those of you seeking room for up to four people . In addition, all amenities are located inside the travel trailer, which means you are protected from the elements when you want to cook breakfast or dinner. Plus, the retractable and extendable roof line of this RV adds more windows than any other option on this list.

Aerodynamics and lightweight, the Alto is just over 1800 lb dry. This means you can easily tow it using a variety of SUVs and small vehicles. The interior offers plenty of convertible furniture and seating arrangements, giving you enough space to sleep a small family, so long as you’re comfortable being cozy!

With multiple sizes as well as interior design choices, this travel trailer is great for those of you seeking something that is more customizable than other options. Perhaps you want a bit more space in the dining area, or maybe you would like more length on this RV so that you can bring your pets.

Regardless of what you are looking for, Safari Condo likely has a travel trailer option for you. However, keep in mind that this option isn’t exactly budget-friendly, especially when you consider the overall interior living space compared to the cost!

Best for Carports: Coachmen Clipper

  • Very budget-friendly for all RV consumers
  • Compact frame expands to sleep up to 5 people
  • Optional tent additions so that you can bring even more people with you
  • Not very many bells and whistles, but you have the basics

If you’re concerned that the last option wasn’t exactly budget-friendly, The Coachmen Clipper is a compact travel trailer that can fit in most locations, including carports. Offering a traditional tent pop-up as well as a teardrop-shaped option with pop-up elements, the Clipper is unique and under $20k. Let’s take a closer look.

Depending on the option you choose, the Clipper weighs anywhere from 1400 to 2500 lb. While the larger options are a bit heavier, this is a lightweight travel trailer and should be fairly aerodynamic when on the road. Plus, the dimensions are ideal for fitting into just about any garage, with their pop-up option under 5 ft tall when collapsed.

The Clipper also has pop-up elements on the sides of the rig, offering you more length depending on the model you choose. These elements are fabric or tent-based, but they offer RV customers large sleeping areas that are heated to keep you protected depending on the time of year. This means that you can also likely sleep up to 5 people in the Clipper, depending on which floor plan you go with.

All of the kitchens are indoors for this particular travel trailer, and some floor plans even offer a portable cassette toilet. There may be an outdoor shower option depending on which model speaks to you, but this is a more bare-bones approach to camping compared to the average, standard travel trailer.

Another potential benefit to owning a Clipper is the fact that you can purchase an additional tent attachment so that you can sleep more people on your camping trips. This option attaches to the outside of your RV and allows you a bit more protection should you want to enjoy the great outdoors or sleep anyone in a tent outside.

However, given the budget-friendly nature of this particular option, there aren’t too many bells and whistles. The interior design is fairly blase, but this is a great choice for those of you to want to sleep more people and reconnect with nature!

Most Compact: OPUS OP LITE

  • Rugged and built to go anywhere you want
  • Comfortably sleeps two adults inside with two more people outside
  • Exterior kitchen and expandable elements make this one convenient
  • No bathroom amenities

If you have a particularly tight garage, you may want to check out the OPUS OP LITE for your space. Another pop-up style of a travel trailer, the OP LITE offers its customers a huge expandable tent space. Let’s check this cool rig out!

Let’s start with the measurements, as these are important if you want to store this travel trailer in a garage or other area of your home. This pop-up option measures under 6 ft across and 4.5 ft tall when collapsed. The overall length is 17 ft, making this a perfect option for the average residential storage space.

However, the expanding capabilities of this trailer are immense, with an interior height of 10 ft when opened. There are also expandable elements on the sides, giving you more interior living space. In fact, this travel trailer can sleep up to 2 people inside with an optional tent attachment to sleep a family of 4.

Speaking of expanding, OPUS has a particular design for their pop-up travel trailers. They use air inflation technology to expand the roof and sides of your RV so you don’t have to. The entire setup ranges from 60-180 seconds long, depending on the size that you purchased. In fact, the OP LITE only needs 80 seconds to fully expand and get ready for camping!

Another huge benefit to purchasing this pop-up travel trailer is the fact that it is extremely rugged and built for off-grid camping. You have rock guards, a raised chassis, all-terrain tires, and much more. You can truly take this travel trailer anywhere that your all-wheel drive vehicle can go, which is a fairly rare occurrence in the RV world!

The queen size bed inside of the OP LITE converts into a seating area for the whole family. There’s an exterior kitchen that gives you all the basics, and it should be covered by an awning or the optional tent addition should you choose to purchase it. However, keep in mind that there are no bathroom amenities on board this travel trailer, so be prepared to rough it!

Lightest Weight: TAXA Outdoors Cricket

  • Amazing and convertible design for any lifestyle
  • Under 1800 lb when unloaded, making it easy to tow
  • Plenty of amenities, including a kitchen and portable toilet
  • May be a bit tall for your garage

Arguably one of the more unique options on this list, the Cricket from TAXA Outdoors is a great choice for those of you seeking something exceedingly lightweight. In fact, this travel trailer weighs under 1800 lb dry, making it easy to tow by a number of different vehicles. Let’s take a closer look at it now.

One of the best things about the Cricket is the fact that it has a flexible interior living space. You can add additional sleeping arrangements for the kiddos so that you can sleep up to four people inside of this compact RV. Plus, the primary sleeping area can be converted into a dining space, or a lounge area, or you can even leave it open for additional storage.

In terms of the measurements of this travel trailer, the cricket is 15 ft long and just over 6.5 ft wide. When closed, the Cricket is just under 7 ft tall, making it one of the taller options on this list. However, it should still fit in the average residential garage, carport, or protected storage area. Take your measurements carefully, just in case!

While rugged and unique, this pop-up travel trailer still offers you plenty of amenities. There’s an indoor kitchen and a portable toilet as well as a shower option, depending on the floor plan you choose. Plus, having such a flexible interior likely appeals to a number of different campers, especially if you are seeking something unique.

There’s plenty of storage, inside and out, including rooftop storage for your bicycles, kayaks , and more. Keep in mind that, the more weight you add, the more you will have to tow, so make sure your tow vehicle can still handle this option when fully loaded!

All in all, the Cricket is a cool travel trailer that will still fit in the average residential garage. It’s lightweight enough to bring it wherever you want to take it, and it offers plenty of storage solutions with its convertible interior. However, it may be a bit outside your budget, especially if you are looking for something that is shorter in height.

Best for Families: Forest River Rockwood Hard Side Camper

  • Unique A-frame design gives you plenty of headroom when fully set up
  • Kitchen and wet bath on board, depending on the floor plan
  • Under six feet tall and collapsed, making it easy to store
  • Length may be too long for your garage, depending

Affordable and durable, the Rockwood from Forest River offers a hard-sided camper in an attractive A-frame shape. Some of these floor plans even include a wet bath on board, making it a more comfortable and compact camper for the whole family. Let’s take a look at all of the amenities that it has to offer.

If you haven’t heard of the Forest River brand name yet, I highly recommend checking out our complete review of this popular RV manufacturer. The Rockwood is available in a hard-sided pop-up travel trailer as well as a softer option if you need more living space overall. However, the hard-sided Rockwood offers more durability in the long run, particularly from rain or snow.

The length of this particular RV ranges from 18 to 21 ft long. The collapsed height is under 6 feet tall. If you have a longer garage than average, fitting this camper indoors is no problem, but you may have to park this one in your carport or driveway, depending on your specific situation.

With extra length comes extra interior living space, offering you a convertible queen or king-size bed as well as a convertible dinette area to sleep additional people. There’s a kitchen inside as well as a comfortable interior design, complete with air conditioning if you need it. Many pop-up campers cannot offer air conditioning given their design, but the hard sides of the Rockwood make this possible.

Another benefit to the Rockwood is the fact that you can store bicycles and kayaks on the roof of this RV when it is fully collapsed. There isn’t very much interior or exterior storage on this RV, but having the option to store things on top of your rig as you drive is a huge plus. Given the low profile of this travel trailer, storing things atop it while you drive shouldn’t interfere with your gas mileage too much.

All in all, this is a great choice for the average family or adventurous couple seeking something that is lightweight and easy to store. Make sure your specific garage measurements can handle the length of this RV, but it has plenty to offer otherwise!

Best for Couples: The Meerkat

  • Highly customizable for a fair price
  • Fiberglass exterior makes this option more durable than others
  • Expandable elements gives you more interior living space
  • Taller than average and may not fit in your tiny garage

At 13 ft long, the Meerkat is shorter in length compared to the Rockwood. This makes it easier to store in the average garage, especially with its unique pop-up rooftop that earned this travel trailer its name. Starting at $25k, the Meerkat is a cute, customizable travel trailer that fits in the average garage and is perfect for couples.

Meerkat Trailers only manufactures two different types of travel trailers. This means that they are open and available for any questions as well as customizable amenities that you might be looking for. You can choose the interior and exterior colors as well as a number of different amenities such as larger awnings, refrigerators, expandable sides, and more.

When it comes to the rest of the dimensions for this travel trailer, the Meerkat is 6.5 ft tall and roughly 5 ft wide. The pop-up element of this travel trailer is located in the center of the RV and doesn’t span the entire rooftop . While this may seem like a letdown, it likely enhances the overall stability of your RV roof, giving you less maintenance to consider in the long run.

The adorable fiberglass exterior and vintage interior make this option attractive as well as functional. There’s plenty of storage, inside and out, and the kitchen comes fully loaded. There’s an expansive seating area as well as a portable toilet on board, giving you plenty of amenities for an RV of this size.

However, given the height of this RV, you should make sure that it fits where you plan on storing it. Plus, this RV truly doesn’t sleep more than two people comfortably, so it really is meant for couples at the end of the day. With plenty to customize, this travel trailer is lightweight, attractive, and fun to camp in!

Boondocking Travel Trailer: OPUS OP 2

  • Compact for storage and spacious when set up
  • Plenty of amenities for four people
  • Air inflation technology makes setup easy
  • Tent materials may not last forever

Another option from OPUS has to be the OP 2. This pop-up travel trailer is larger than the LITE option previously discussed, sleeping up to four people inside. Plus, it’s just as rugged as the LITE option, capable of going wherever your journeys take you. While it’s more expensive than the previous OPUS  travel trailer, it’s well worth it when you see all of the additional amenities included!

Complete with all-terrain tires, a raised chassis, a rugged exterior design, as well as the air inflation technology that OPUS is known for, this travel trailer is great for boondocking. Not only does it have off-grid utility capabilities, but it also is designed to be used no matter the season and no matter the road conditions.

Let’s talk about measurements first. When collapsed, the OP 2 is just over 18 ft long, 6 ft wide, and has a height of 4.5 ft. This makes it compact and easy to store in your garage, carport, and elsewhere. The weight on this particular pop-up travel trailer is far heavier than average, however, just over 3,000 lbs dry .

After the air inflation technology sets up your RV for you, the interior is spacious and expansive. You have a large sleeping area at one end and a convertible dinette space at the other. Plus, there is an exterior kitchen, a portable toilet and shower, and plenty of storage solutions, both when the RV is set up and when it is in motion.

Another great perk to this pop-up travel trailer is the fact that you can add additional tent annexes or living spaces. This gives you more space to spread out and you can sleep more people on your camping trips should you so desire. However, keep in mind that this RV is built primarily out of tent fabric and materials, likely making it less durable than other options.

Most Unique: Airstream Basecamp

  • Stunning design with large panoramic window
  • Plenty of amenities and luxurious touches
  • Aluminum design and construction make this one well-built
  • May be too large for your garage, depending on the floor plan

There have been plenty of unique travel trailers on this list so far, but the Airstream Basecamp is one of the most eye-catching RVs currently being manufactured. Available in two different sizes, this aluminum beauty may not fit in your attached garage, but it’s certainly an option to consider if you want something durable and one-of-a-kind. Let’s take a closer look now.

Starting at $46k, the Airstream Basecamp is available in either a 16 ft long or 20 ft long model. No matter which you choose, the height of this RV is just under 10 ft tall. This may not fit in the average garage or carport, so definitely get your measurements exact before you fall in love with this option.

The Basecamp may not be the most traditional of Airstream travel trailers, but it still offers everything that Airstream is known for . It is extremely well-built, full of luxurious amenities, and more convenient than just about any other option on this list. It has plenty of storage, solar panels, and a more traditional RV interior that offers you a bathroom and kitchen.

The primary difference between the two sizes is the sleeping arrangements. Both models have a large panoramic front window so that you can take in the views of the great outdoors, but the smaller model sleeps two people in the larger model sleeps four. This is an important distinction if you want to sleep the entire family or bring some friends along with you camping.

With durable materials and more amenities than we can list here, the Basecamp is truly a special travel trailer to consider, especially for resale value. However, it is arguably the largest option on this list, so make sure it fits in your garage or driveway before getting ahead of yourself!

Final Thoughts

Finding a travel trailer that fits in a garage isn’t impossible, but it will take some research and searching. Knowing the measurements of the location where you are hoping to keep your RV is a good place to start, so get those numbers before you start shopping.

Garages are fantastic places to keep any RV, offering you peace of mind and security when your travel trailer isn’t amused!

RV Bike Racks: How To Take Your Bike With You Anywhere

travel trailer with bike garage

If you have a motorized RV , you could always secure your bikes inside while traveling between destinations. And we’ve certainly known owners of new and used travel trailers that transport bikes in the bed of their tow vehicle or on a roof rack.

Toy haulers are perhaps the easiest because they have a garage that can be used for gear storage. But fifth wheels make it tough because the pin box takes up so much space in your truck bed, and your 5th wheel cap needs room to pivot as you go around corners.

While there are ways to transport bikes without a rack, here are the major benefits of RV bike racks :

  • Dedicated bike storage. Don’t worry about having to navigate around bikes that are stored inside your RV if you’re making a one-night rest stop between destinations.
  • Increased storage space. Leave the room in your truck bed or toy hauler garage for other travel toys and camping equipment .
  • Maintain a clean living space. Avoid bringing dirty bikes inside your RV if you don’t have time to clean them after a muddy ride.
  • Less tangling. Bikes stored inside your RV or in a truck bed can shift while driving. Each bike has a dedicated spot with a bike rack, so you don’t have to untangle them when you get to camp.

RV Bike Rack Types

There are four main types of RV bike racks, categorized by how they mount to your RV. It’s fairly straightforward, but here’s a little more about each type of rack.

Ladder-Mount Racks

ladder-1-rv-bike-racks-07-2022

Ladder-mount racks are best for RVs with permanent rear ladders. They hook over ladder rungs to provide a stable place to transport your bikes. They are a great option for all types of motorized and towable RVs with ladders, and they also allow you to keep your tow hitch free to pull a second vehicle.

Hitch-Mount Racks

hitch-mount-rv-bike-racks-07-2022

Motorhome campers traveling without an extra vehicle, a “toad, ” can still use their RV’s trailer hitch mount. Hitch-mount racks are easy to install in your motorhome’s hitch mount. They come in two-bike and four-bike varieties and can accommodate bike rack covers if you want to protect your bikes from road dirt, moisture, and other potentially harmful elements.

Bumper-Mount Racks

bumper-mount-rv-bike-racks-07-2022

Usually best for travel trailers and fifth wheels that don’t have a rear hitch receiver, these racks mount directly to your trailer’s rear bumper. They appear similar to hitch racks from afar, but they are secured by bolting around your welded bumper rather than inserting them into a hitch.

Trailer Tongue-Mount Racks

tongue-mount-rv-bike-racks-07-2022

This rack type is great for toy haulers and trailers because it mounts on the front of your trailer’s tongue. This placement of a bike rack is out of the way, convenient, and doesn’t block any doors, ladders, or storage areas. It’s also nice to keep an eye on your bikes when you drive. They usually come in the shape of an upright Y and can accommodate two to four bikes.

How to Choose the Right Bike Rack for your RV

Your decision begins with considering the rack types above and deciding which mounting option is best for your RV. Aside from that, here are a few more factors to choose an RV-approved bike rack:

Number of Bikes

number-of-bike-rv-bike-racks-07-2022

For starters, you’ll need a bike rack that can accommodate the number of bikes you hope to bring on your next RV road trip. Most racks carry two or four bikes, so you won’t have much to consider here.

But remember that having more bike storage can come in handy in certain situations. Your RV family might expand in the coming years, or you might plan a road trip with guests who want to bring their bikes along. Or, perhaps you have several bikes of your own: a road bike, a mountain bike, and an e-bike.

If it’s not too much of a price difference between the two-bike racks and four-bike racks, having a rack with more space than you’ll normally use can be useful.

Weight and Weight Capacity

weight-capacity-rv-bike-racks-07-2022

Consider how much weight you’ll be adding to the location of your bike rack and how much your bikes weigh. Some of today’s e-bikes can weigh as much as 80 pounds, which can be a problem for a rack with a maximum capacity of 35 pounds per bike.

When considering a rack’s weight capacity, you can look at the rack’s total capacity or capacity per bike. Knowing the weight of each bike you’ll transport will benefit you. A rack that’s rated for 35 pounds per bike (and a total capacity of 70 pounds) may be able to hold a 50-pound e-bike if your other is a 15-pound road bike.

The weight you add to your RV can impact fuel economy and towing performance. The location of your bike rack makes a difference, particularly with tongue-mounted racks that increase your overall tongue weight, which must be accounted for when calculating how much your vehicle can tow safely .

Rear-mounted racks add weight to the back of your trailer, which may increase trailer sway (if heavy enough). This extra weight should always be factored in when considering how to load your trailer safely .

usability-rv-bike-racks-07-2022

The last thing to consider is how easy loading and unloading your bikes will be. The hitch-mount racks that extend upward from your hitch require you to lift your bikes to shoulder height (or higher) to load them on.

This can be restrictive for some RVers, but those racks have the benefit of carrying your bikes up higher to minimize the chance of dragging them on the road if you’re pulling into a gas station with a steep entry.

The alternative is the tray-style rack, which sits at the same height as your hitch mount. Loading and unloading bikes from a tray-style rack requires less lifting, but your bikes may ride a little lower behind your RV.

Finally, the Y-shaped tongue-mounted racks are great for maintaining the ease of going in and out of a rear entry trailer or toy hauler. But it might take a little longer to get used to loading and unloading these racks. Additionally, you’ll find it cumbersome to load and unload when your trailer is still connected to your tow vehicle.

How To Install an RV Bike Rack

install-rv-bike-racks-07-2022

Fortunately, most RV bike racks are easy to install. They come with instruction manuals that offer simple, easy-to-follow instructions. This is certainly one of those RV upgrades you can do alone, even with minimal experience.

But if you aren’t comfortable installing your new bike rack, you can always schedule an appointment at your nearest Camping World Service Center . Our techs can quickly install your rack, and they might even help you load up your bikes so that you can get back on the road in no time.

You show a bumper mount bike rack for the travel trailer using a clamp on hitch. I thought those would break the bumper and void the warranty?

Your safest bet is to contact the manufacturer or dealer to inquire about whether a bumper-mount bike rack installation would void any existing warranties.

I bought an e trike to use with my Class C. Then found out that racks shouldn’t be used with RV’s. Is there anything for a trike?

Best e-bike rack for fifth wheel hands down is Swagman e-rack. It is rated not only for e- bikes but also for trailer mount. 2 bike Rack is rated for 70 lbs. Each bike. The locking hitch pin eliminates any sway and wobble.

I had a Thule and found out the hard way it was not rated for use on a trailer.

Go Swagman!

Any bike rack that holds the bike by a clamp pushing on the frame will eventually over time of bouncing around the back of the RV, scuff up the paint on the bike frame. Use a bike rack that clamps down on the front tire instead. Swagman makes a good model that works in that manner and won’t damage the paint on the bike frame.

1. Best Overall: Swagman XC2 Hitch Mount RV Approved Bike Rack

41CY2HgMLyL. SL350

The Swagman Traveler XC2 is our top choice for the best overall RV bike rack because it’s adaptable to work well with multiple sizes of campers and trailers.

It fits a standard two-inch hitch receiver and can hold up to two bikes that weigh a maximum of 35 pounds each.

While it’s advertised as a hitch-mounted RV bike rack, it can also be secured to a 4.5-inch steel-welded RV bumper adapter.

This makes it somewhat of a hybrid rack and further increases its versatility and ability to work with a wide variety of RV designs.

You’ll be able to transport bikes with tire sizes ranging from 20 to 29 inches with this rack.

You will, however, need to purchase Swagman’s Bar Adapter if you wish to transport step-through or cruiser-style bikes with this rack.

The Swagman Traveler rack itself weighs just over 36 pounds and it folds up for easy portability when you remove it from your RV.

Things We Like

  • Fits Standard Hitch: This rack fits a two-inch, Class 3 hitch receiver.
  • Versatile Installation: Works as a hitch-mounted or bumper-mounted rack.
  • Bike Sizes: Works with bike tires from 20 to 29 inches in size.
  • Foldable: Makes it easy to store and transport when not in use.

Things We Don’t Like

  • Bike Capacity: This rack is only able to fit two bikes.

2. Best Ladder-Mounted Rack: Ladder Mounted Surco 501BR bike rack

41P2Zo+IQKL. SL350

If you prefer a bike racks for rv ladder because you don’t have (or want to use) a hitch or bumper on your RV, you can’t beat the Surco 501BR ladder-mounted rack.

This model is compatible with the ladder on any style van or RV and it includes pivoting arms that make it easier to access the ladder without completely remove the rack.

Of course, the bikes will still have to be taken off, but this is a super-convenient feature that many ladder-mounted racks don’t offer.

You’ll be able to carry two bikes on this rack and it can be installed without the need for any extra straps or the need to remove the ladder from your RV.

The Surco rack is also super lightweight and weighs less than four pounds. So it’s easy to move around when you do take it off your RV.

It’s made of heavy-gauge aluminum with a polished finish for added corrosion resistance.

Surco racks are also made in the USA and arrive at your door fully assembled, which further reduces the amount of effort and time needed to install it.

This particular model can handle up to 75 pounds (or two bikes weighing roughly 37.5 pounds each).

  • Pivoting Arms: Allows you to access your RV ladder without removing the rack.
  • Compatibility: Fits ladders on any style of van or RV.
  • Easy Installation: Doesn’t require straps or any additional hardware.
  • Ladder Mounted: Allows you to retain access to your bumper and hitch for other towing/hauling needs.
  • Bike Capacity: This rack is able to hold only two bikes.
  • Ladder Access: This rack will still somewhat restrict access to your RV ladder.

3. Best Budget-Friendly: Quick QPRBM2R Bumper Mounted RV bike rack

31+NLjJeiEL. SL350

If you’re searching for a budget-friendly bike rack, you’ll be hard-pressed to beat the price tag on the Quick Products QPRBM2R bumper-mounted rack.

This rack can be mounted on a four-inch or 4.5-inch steel-welded RV bumper and it can carry up to two bikes.

In terms of weight capacity, this rack is designed to hold a total of 60 pounds (or 30 pounds per bike).

It does, however, allow you to customize the space between the slots where your tires will sit so that it can accommodate bikes of many different lengths.

The entire rack is made of stainless steel and it’s finished with a powder coating for added corrosion resistance.

It can fit bikes with tires up to 29 inches but is not capable of transporting “Fat Tire” bikes.

The slotted wheel wells on this rack make it super easy to set your bike tires in place when loading up.

And the stabilizer post gives you a convenient place to both support your bikes and then fasten them down once they’re loaded on.

  • Price: This is the most budget-friendly rack on our list.
  • Adjustability: Accommodates bikes of many different lengths.
  • Powder Coated Finish: Provides resistance against rust and corrosion.
  • Slotted Wheel Wells: This design makes it really easy to load bikes without having to lift them too high.
  • Mounting: It will only work with RVs that have a 4-inch or 4.5-inch steel-welded bumper.
  • Bike Capacity: This rack holds only two bikes.

4. Best Bumper Rack: Swagman 2 Bike Bumper Rack RV Approved

For those of you that have an RV with a solid, steel-welded bumper to which you want to attach a bike rack, the Swagman  Bumper Rack is arguably your best choice for such an installation.

It’s super lightweight at less than one pound and it features heavy-duty steel construction.

The steel used in this rack is also finished with black paint and powder coating for added corrosion resistance.

It’s designed to be installed on four-inch or 4.5-inch steel-welded bumpers and secures in place using 6.5-inch and 8-inch long bolts around the bumper.

You’ll be able to transport two bikes on this rack and it can carry a total of 60 pounds (or 30 pounds per bike).

The rack has two sets of slots where the bike wheels can be inserted and then a central post gives you a place to secure the bikes.

Because the racks are actually two separate pieces, they can be positioned as far apart from each other as necessary for your specific bike sizes.

And this rack also supports a wide variety of bike tire sizes.

  • Lightweight: This rack weighs less than one pound.
  • Price: This is also a super budget-friendly RV bike rack!
  • Heavy-Duty Construction: Includes a powder-coated finish for corrosion resistance.
  • Versatility: Can be adjusted to fit bikes of many different lengths and tire sizes.
  • Bike Capacity: This rack (again!) fits only two bikes.
  • Installation: May require a little more installation time than other racks.

5. Largest Capacity: CURT 18065 5 Bicycles Trailer Hitch Bike Rack

31vf+vKjh3L. SL250

Those of you that have more than two bikes you want to strap on the back of your RV should consider the large capacity of the Curt 18065 rack.

It can hold up to five bikes and boasts a maximum total weight capacity of 225 pounds, which comes out to roughly 45 pounds per bike.

This is a hitch-mounted rv bike carrier that fits a standard two-inch hitch receiver. It features tapered arms that make it easier to fit bikes of multiple different sizes on the rack without handlebars getting in the way of each other.

This makes it a great option for families transporting both kid and adult-sized bikes.

The rack secures to your trailer hitch with an anti-rattle pin and the two-inch shank is threaded to reduce rack sway while traveling.

The rack is also equipped with built-in reflectors so that other drivers can clearly see you’re carrying something behind your RV when visibility gets low.

When you need to remove this rack, take out the pin and simply slide the shank out of the receiver hitch.

The tapered arms actually fold down for more compact storage and the entire rack (when empty) weighs 43 pounds.

The vertical arm of the rack can also tilt down if you need to access anything on your RV behind the rack, which also makes it useful for cab-over campers with entry doors on the back.

And finally, this rack is finished with a carbide black powder coating to increase durability and provide extra corrosion resistance over its lifetime.

  • Large Capacity: This rack holds up to five bikes and a total of 225 pounds.
  • Hitch-Mount Installation: Makes it easy to install and remove in seconds.
  • Tapered Arms: Makes it easier to fit bikes of different sizes on the rack together.
  • Powder Coat Finish: Reduces build-up of rust or corrosion over time.
  • Not For Trailer Use: This rack is designed for use on RVs, vans, trucks, SUVS, or other vehicles with a tow package. But it shouldn’t be used behind a trailer or other accessory that’s already being towed.

6. Runner Up For Best Ladder-Mount Rack: Camco 51492 Ladder Mount RV bike rack

31zTQewIbXL. SL350

While we couldn’t quite give the Camco Ladder Rack 51492 our top pick for the best ladder rack, this model comes in a close second to the Surco rack we highlighted above.

This rack can easily be hooked onto the ladder of your RV or trailer and can hold up to two bikes and a maximum of 60 pounds.

There are two sets of soft grips on the horizontal rungs of this rack where your bikes will sit once loaded on.

These grips help protect your bike from any damage while you’re bumping along down the road and straps secure them down so you can be sure they aren’t going anywhere.

The bonus of opting for a ladder-mounted rv bike carrier like this one is that you can use your ladder itself as a hard point to which you can lock your bikes overnight or if you decide to go for a walk into town.

And because your bikes will be stored relatively close to the ladder, you won’t need a super-long bike lock to make this work.

When you do remove this rack and need to store it away, the entire rack folds in on itself and weighs just eight pounds.

So it’s easy to move and doesn’t require a lot of space to store. The only downside of this rack is that it stores your bikes horizontally, which means they might stick out past the side of your RV, depending on the exact location of your RV ladder.

  • Easy Installation: This rack simply hooks over the rungs of your RV ladder and straps in place.
  • Lightweight and Compact: This rack weighs just over 8 pounds and folds up for easy storage when not in use.
  • Soft Grips: Hold your bikes in place and protect them from damage.
  • Bonus Straps: Secure your bikes in place and keep them from moving around while driving.
  • Holds Bikes Horizontally: This means that bikes may stick out past the side of your RV, depending on where exactly your RV ladder is located.

7. Best For Add-Ons: Hollywood Sportrider Se hitch bike rack

41d+j1CQs+L. SL350

If you’re interested in a two-bike rack that gives you the flexibility to add accessories for more hauling capacity in the future, the Hollywood Racks Sportrider SE is one of the best options out there.

It’s compatible with Hollywood’s two-bike add on kit or their cargo basket if you eventually need extra storage.

This is a hitch-mounted rv bicycle rack that can hold up to two bikes and a maximum of 100 pounds.

It features heavy-duty construction and fits a standard two-inch hitch receiver.

It also boasts a unique hitch tightening system that reduces rack wobble while you’re driving and provides a more secure installation.

The wheel holders on this rack are adjustable to fit bikes with a variety of wheelbase sizes.

It can fit wheelbases up to 60 inches and it includes locking frame hooks that secure the bikes to the rack with ease.

This rack also includes a locking hitch pin and security cable for added theft protection.

While it is one of the more expensive racks on our list, it offers more versatility and security than almost any other option.

And if you want to keep this rack installed even when you’re not hauling bikes, it can fold flat against the back of your RV so you don’t have to worry about it extending off the back if you need to park in a tight space.

  • Compatible With Add-Ons: You can add more bike storage or a cargo basket down the line.
  • Heavy-Duty Construction: Makes this a durable rack that’s designed to last for years.
  • Weight Capacity: This rack is rated to hold a maximum of 100 pounds (or 50 pounds per bike).
  • Hitch Tightening System: Reduces rack wobble and provides a secure fit on two-inch hitch receivers.
  • Price: This is one of the more expensive racks on our list, in part because of its versatility and heavy-duty construction.

8. Best For Travel Trailers: Lippert Let’s Go Aero Jack 2 bike Carrier System

31BQHnpWsqL. SL350

If you own a travel trailer that doesn’t have a steel-welded bumper, you’ve probably been wondering when we would get to an option suited for your situation.

Well, here we are at the Let’s Go Aero Jack-It Double Bike Carrier System. This rack doesn’t require a ladder, hitch, or bumper for secure installation.

Instead, it secures to the tongue of your travel trailer in between the trailer and the vehicle you’re towing it with.

It’s designed to fit most A-frame travel and cargo trailers and is compatible with all bike frames.

And by installing it on the tongue of your trailer, this rack will experience much less bounce than a rack installed on the back of an RV or trailer.

This carrier system can hold up to two bikes and offers a maximum weight capacity of 80 pounds (or 40 pounds per bike.

The camper bicycle rack itself weighs just 25 pounds and it mounts directly over the tongue jack on your A-frame trailer.

The good news about this rack is that it won’t void any existing chassis warranty when installed properly.

And speaking of proper installation, this rack comes with two Sway Control cradles and two lockable ‘No-Motion’ pins to prevent it from moving around while you’re driving.

This reduces the likelihood of pins or components loosening while you’re on the road, which can be a problem with some other racks.

  • Unique Design: Helps you maximize towing and hauling capacity with a travel trailer.
  • Versatility: This rack fits all bike frames.
  • Less Bounce: Because it’s installed on the tongue of your trailer, this rack bounces less than others mounted on the back of an RV or trailer.
  • Sway Control: The rack includes cradles to help prevent sway that can loosen components on other racks over time.
  • Loading Process: This rack is unique in the way it carries your bikes, so loading it might take some time to get used to.
  • Price: Because of the unique design and high-quality components, this rack is a more costly option than some others.

Choosing The Best RV Bike Rack

Okay, so those are the best RV bike rack models we could find on the market today.

But to help you make the best decision possible, we need to cover the most important factors to consider when comparing any bike rack model against another.

What Type Of RV Bike Rack Do I Need?

The most appropriate place to start is to define the three main types of RV bike racks.

These racks are defined by the method in which they attach to your RV and, as you might suspect, there are pros and cons to each method.

Bike Rack For RV Ladder

This type of rack hooks onto the rungs of the ladder on the back of your RV. It will also work with the ladders on the back of most travel trailers.

These racks are designed so that your bikes hook onto them vertically, with the front tire closest to the ground.

The benefit of this rack is that you can still use your hitch to tow a vehicle or trailer behind your RV.

But these racks also tend to have a lower weight capacity and few can hold more than two bikes at a time.

The other downside of a ladder-mounted rack is that you’ll need to remove it every time you need to go up your RV ladder.

In some emergency cases, you might need quick access to your roof and a ladder-mounted rack can hinder your ability to get up there quickly to patch a leak or perform any sort of emergency repair.

While they can offer a more cost-effective alternative to the other two rack types on our list, they tend to be looked at as a final option for those that don’t have a hitch or bumper to install another rack on.

Bike Rack For RV Bumper

Bumper-mounted racks are nice because your bikes will sit lower and they can eliminate any visibility issues that can come with your bikes being in the way of your RV’s back window or back-up camera.

This type of rack, of course, requires that you have a solid, steel-welded bumper on the back of your RV.

That bumper is what will support both the weight of the rack and the weight of the bikes you eventually load onto it.

So that’s one of the reasons why most of these racks carry a maximum of two bikes.

Depending on the design of your RV, you may be able to install a bumper-mounted rack and still have access to your hitch for towing purposes.

But these racks should generally only be purchased for RVs with a solid steel bumper that’s strong enough to support the weight of the rack and your bikes.

Hitch-Mounted Bike Racks

Hitch-mounted racks are the most common choice for RV travelers. But they’re only a good selection if you don’t plan to use your trailer hitch for any other purpose.

You should also make sure that your RV already has a hitch receiver or you’ll have a much harder time installing one of these racks.

This type of rack also requires compatibility with the size of your hitch receiver. Most standard hitches are two inches in diameter, but there are a variety of other sizes out there.

So just be sure that the hitch on the rack will fit inside the existing hitch receiver on your RV before making a purchase.

Hitch-mounted racks tend to give you the ability to carry more bikes than the other two types of racks.

They come with capacities varying from just two bikes up to five (or more!) bikes and they tend to have a higher weight capacity than the other two racks.

Because they install easily into a standard two-inch hitch, this type of rack can also be installed on your other vehicles.

So if you have a truck or SUV with a tow package, you’ll also be able to use your hitch-mounted rack on your other vehicles.

These racks are super easy to install and remove from your RV. They come in two different styles: hanging and platform racks.

The style you choose will really be up to your personal preference and how many bikes you like to bring along on your RV adventures.

Number of Bikes  Bikes Do You Want To Carry With You?

The number of bikes you need to carry is an obvious factor that will help you narrow down your choices. The racks we’ve included above hold anywhere from two to five bicycles.

But the important point here is that the rack you choose must be able to fit all of the bikes you’d want to bring on your RV adventures.

When considering the number of bikes you want to carry, you should also consider if you ever invite friends or another couple to travel in your RV with you.

If that’s ever the case for you, you might want a rack that can hold more bikes so that you always have the option instead of coming up short when it matters most.

Some of these racks give you the capability to add an additional accessory so that you can carry more bikes.

If you’re a young couple with only two bikes right now but you expect to add to that total in the coming years, one of these expandable racks could be a great choice for you in both the short and long term.

The size of your bikes will dictate whether or not you’ll be able to strap them onto a given rack securely.

And strapping multiple bikes onto one rack can present other challenges depending on the size and design of your bikes.

One example is trying to fit a large mountain bike with straight handles next to a smaller bike with the type of curved handles that are more common to road bikes.

This handlebar incompatibility can present issues if there’s not sufficient space between the bikes.

But the size of your bikes can also impact whether or not they simply fit on your chosen rack.

Even though many of these racks are adjustable so that they can fit a wide range of bikes, you should be careful to measure the length of your bike to make sure it will fit on your chosen rack, which is especially true if you choose a bumper-mounted rack.

For ladder-mounted racks, you must also be sure that your bikes won’t stick out on the side of your RV.

This will create a risk of clipping signs or running into other objects if you don’t swing wide enough.

In turn, this can make a ladder-mounted rack unsafe for other drivers on the road as well.

Rack Weight Capacity

Many of these racks have a maximum weight capacity for safe hauling.

This capacity should clearly be advertised when you’re looking at the rack’s specifications online.

Your job will simply be to make sure the weight of the bikes you plan to load onto the rack doesn’t exceed that rack’s maximum weight capacity.

The type of materials used in the construction of a rack is responsible for how well it can hold up against the elements.

Because of their primary use, RV bike racks spend most of their time outside and subject to the whims of Mother Nature.

The strongest racks on the market today typically feature stainless steel construction, but there are also aluminum options out there.

Ideally, if you can find a rack that’s finished with an exterior powder coating, that’s going to go a long way to reduce the build-up of corrosion on the rack, which is especially important if you live in (or frequently travel to) a wet or humid climate.

One of the best ways to really assess the quality and durability of a rack is to dive deep into the consumer reviews that people have posted on eCommerce sites where the rack is being sold.

These reviews will give you real-life accounts of how a certain rack performed and held up to multiple years of regular use.

How Much Dose RV Bike Racks Cost?

When it comes to your bottom line, even the best RV bike rack shouldn’t put a huge dent in your RV budget.

These RV bike racks are affordable and essential to safely transport bikes on your RV.

From our research, it’s clear that you should be able to find a quality RV bike rack if you’re willing to spend between $60 and $200.

Considering that some of us have bikes that came with four-digit price tags, this is a pretty minimal investment to make sure your bikes are safe and secure wherever you decide to point your RV next!

So, Which Is The Best Bike Rack For Your RV?

We chose the Swagman Traveler XC2 bike rack as the best overall selection because it’s a useful choice for many different types of RVs. It’s one of the more versatile choices on our list because it can be hitch-mounted or bumper-mounted depending on your preference and the design of your RV.

It can also accommodate bikes of many sizes, with tires ranging from 20 to 29 inches.

But if you’re looking for a budget-friendly option, the Quick Products QPRBM2R bumper-mounted rack is a solid choice for a rack that won’t break the bank.

It can hold up to two bikes at a maximum of 30 pounds per bike and fits on 4-inch or 4.5-inch square RV bumpers.

This rack also allows you to customize its width to fit bikes of many different sizes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Even if you have a great idea for how to choose an RV bike rack and which model is the best for you, there are still a few things here that will help you once you have your new bike rack in hand.

These are some of the most frequently asked questions about RV bike racks.

What are some tips for installing a bike rack?

The correct process for installing a bike rack will obviously depend on the type of rack you choose.

So the most straightforward answer we can give you here is to consult the manufacturer’s installation requirements to make sure you’re installing your chosen rack correctly.

That being said, bumper-mounted racks tend to require the most installation time and energy of the three types.

They require more hardware and, therefore, must be more carefully installed to be sure that the rack will be able to support the weight of your bikes once you load them on.

You’ll often need to screw on an adapter that wraps around the top and bottom of your RV’s steel-welded bumper.

Then can install screws and nuts to secure the bracket on top of the bumper and make sure it’s locked into place.

Lastly, the rest of the rack will slide into place and fasten with some type of bolt or pin.

For hitch-mounted racks, the installation is as simple as sliding the rack into the hitch receiver and secure the pin in place.

Ladder racks simply hook over the rungs of your RV ladder and strap securely into place.

If you do have trouble following the instructions in the manual that comes with the rack you purchase, you can always call the manufacturer’s customer service line for guidance.

If that doesn’t work, YouTube is also a great resource for videos that will clearly explain how to properly install the most common RV bike racks.

How to properly load bikes on an RV bike rack?

This will depend, of course, on the type of rack you choose and whether you’ll need to load bikes onto a platform or hang them from horizontal bars.

But for both of these rack types, it’s typically best to load bikes with handlebars facing in opposite directions.

For example, if you load the first bike on with the handlebars towards the passenger side of your RV or trailer, the next bike should be loaded with handlebars facing the driver’s side.

This will help you fit bikes together more easily and you should always make sure that pedals aren’t sticking through spokes or any important mechanical components aren’t going to bang together while you’re transporting your bikes.

What are the best brands for RV bike racks?

For our money, Swagman, Lippert, and Hollywood Racks are three of the top brands currently producing RV-specific bike racks.

Swagman offers a number of different designs for RV of different classes and Lippert is well-known for having arguably the best customer service in the industry.

Hollywood Racks also produces high-quality designs made for a variety of different installations but, true to their name, their racks tend to be a bit more expensive than others.

Can I attach other things to my bike rack?

We don’t recommend it! While we’re not going to tell you that it’s absolutely impossible to attach items other than bikes to your bike rack, that’s simply not what it was designed for.

And clumsily strapping items that aren’t meant to be transported on a bike rack can cause damage to either the rack of any of the vehicles following you on the highway.

These racks are specifically designed for transporting bikes and they should be used for this specific purpose.

Biking is one of our favorite past times when we get to a new location in our RV.

It’s a great way to get to know your campground or new neighborhood without having to drive your RV down tight one-way streets and it allows you to see more in a short period of time than you would be able to on foot.

With a quality RV bike rack on the back of our rig, we can be confident our bikes will go with us wherever we decide to explore.

And it also gives us a safe place to lock our bikes up when we have to spend a quick night in a Wal-Mart parking lot on the way to a new (and more scenic) destination!

We hope you’ve found these reviews and our bike rack buying guide useful and we wish you only the best of luck choosing the right rack for your particular RV or trailer setup!

As there are many types of bike racks available for your travel trailers, it is common to get confused. Choosing the right bike rack needs much experience and you need to think it over carefully according to your requirements.

So in this article, we present you with a list of bike racks that are suitable for any RV or travel trailer.

Different Types of Bike Racks for Travel Trailers

There can be plenty of bike racks for your travel trailer. They are all of the different shapes, sizes, and styles. Based on the preferences of different people, these racks had categorized into several types. If you are wishing to transport or haul your bikes with an RV or trailer, you need to find out which type of rack will be the most perfect for your trailer or RV. In order to get the perfect bike rack for your trailer, you need to be clear about these types of bike racks.

Just like the types of bike racks for normal vehicles, there are generally three types of bike racks available for Trailers, RVs, 5th Wheel Campers, and similar type vehicles. They are – hitch-mount, bumper-mount, and ladder-mount bike racks. We are going to demonstrate each of these racks and highlight the differences among these bike racks. Therefore, the management for choosing the suitable type for your trailer will be much easier once you have identified the differences.

Hitch-Mount Racks:

Most of the RVs, trailers come with a hitch pre-installed. So, hitch-mount bike racks are the most popular for a trailer. Moreover, the people who own an RV or a trailer; kind of look for the hitch-mount racks first rather than the other types because these are the choices that come into their minds first.

Again, these racks have different kinds with different bike load capacities. Most of the time you will find that these racks have the ability to carry 2, 3, or 4 bicycles respectively and you will find them in the market accordingly. Depending on how these racks carry your bikes, they can be found in hanging-style and platform-style.

With that being said, it is up to you to decide what style of hitch-mount bike rack suits your trailer the best. At the same time, you should also determine how many bikes you are willing to carry according to your preference. You may already know, hitch-mount bike racks are also available for regular type vehicles. This shows excellent versatility for such bike racks as these racks have proved to work very well with almost all regular types of vehicles.

The main difference between a regular vehicle hitch-mount and a trailer hitch-mount is the size of the hitch-receiver. Most regular hitch-mount racks work with 1.25” x 1.25” or 2” x 2” receivers. On the other hand, trailer hitch-mount racks only work with 2” X 2” receivers. But that doesn’t mean that you should try a regular hitch rack on a trailer because the hitch racks that are built for trailers or RVs are much stronger and can handle excessive pressure for being mounted at the back of an RV or a trailer. That is why these racks are called “RV approved”.

Bumper-Mount Racks:

If your bikes remain in a horizontal position while they are being mounted on a bike rack and also stays relatively high above the ground, then you may face a problem. The problem is the difficulty of accessing the rear-view mirror. When the bikes remain in such a position, the only thing you see when you look at the rear-view mirror is your bikes. They block the view and it will become difficult to see what is behind your vehicle. This difficulty rises to the next level when you are trying to park your trailer or you are driving backwards.

Therefore, some trailer owners like to have a bumper-mount rack for transporting their bikes. Bumper-mount bike racks provide a clear view by eliminating any visibility issues. Therefore, for the cautious drivers; these racks will come in very handy.

Hence, you may experience some issues if you use this kind of bike rack. For example – these racks can only work with a trailer or RV that has Steel welded bumper. Any spot-welded bumper or aluminium constructed bumper will not work with these types of racks. Then again, your RV or trailer must have a 4” to 4.5” square shape bumper otherwise; these racks will not accommodate. Most of the time, they are made to transport two or four bikes of the same type and size. So, if you plan on transporting two different types of bikes however, this type of rack is not suitable for you.

We should also inform you that a rack like this can provide the strength that can adapt the pressure coming from your bike’s weight. This type of rack maintains a balance of the overall weight combining the bikes and the trailer. Just make sure your RV or trailer features the optimal bumper if you wish to mount a rack like this. Most of these racks are able to carry either 2 or 4 bikes and they don’t require the usage of the hitch. As a result, you get an option to mount other things on your trailer hitch.

Ladder-Mount Racks:

The last but not least type of bike rack is the ladder-mount type. If your trailer contains a ladder at the back, then you can think of installing this type of bike rack. This type of rack keeps your bikes vertically where the front tires remain facing towards the ground. Most of the time, you will find these racks carrying two bikes at the back of an RV or trailer. Sometimes, they ensure proper security by providing hooks and rubber straps for the bikes.

Sadly, there are some disadvantages to this type of rack as well. We can start with the difficulty of loading and unloading of the bikes. Since your bikes remain at a high level attached to the ladder. So when you are a short guy or if you own quite heavy bikes, then there will be a hassle to load and unload your bikes as lifting them at a higher level will be quite difficult. Again, if you want to access the ladder for other means, you have to unmount the rack first and you have to do that every time you want to access the ladder that is very tiresome and exhausting. Moreover, these racks don’t have a mentionable capacity for bike loading. They can be expected to carry at most 2 bikes and they have to be very light.

When you know about the advantages and disadvantages of these bike racks, you can probably understand that these racks are for those who don’t have any hitch or bumper on their RVs or trailers. So if your RV or trailer do have a bumper that is capable of mounting a bumper-mount rack or a hitch that is appropriate for a hitch-mount rack, then you should go for them instead of buying a ladder-mount bike rack.

The Importance of a Trailer Bike Rack

If you are thinking – “I have an RV that is different from a regular vehicle, should I buy a bike rack ?” Then I must say you obviously should. Having a bike rack on your trailer can be beneficial in a multitude of ways. Like any regular vehicle, a trailer lets you the option to mount a bike rack on its hitch-receiver, bumper, or even on the ladder if it contains any. The manufacturers already thought about this requirement, so they built these vehicles in such a way that they can adapt a bike rack. So what is the importance of an RV or trailer bike racks that will lead you to buy them? We are going to discuss them below –

You can maintain a good condition of your bikes:

If you think you can store your bikes inside your RV or probably you are already doing it, then it will be normal that your bikes will be prone to scratches and damages as they are being stored in a small space

The situation will be worse if you make a typical RV ride on a bumpy road. Your bikes will collide with each other and get damaged and scratched off their paints. As a result, they will certainly vanquish their overall quality. So if you are wise, you should not hesitate to invest in a good quality bike carrier for your trailer.

you invest in a quality bike carrier and invest once rather than buying different cheap racks again and again. Different RV bike racks protect your bikes in different ways. So before you buy, try to make sure the bike rack that you are buying will carry your bikes in the most convenient way and will meet the requirements to adjust your trailer.

Convenient storage of your bikes:

I don’t have to remind you again that you can store your bikes on a bike rack in a suitable way instead of just storing them inside your trailer, you already know that. If you are a real outdoor sports lover who loves to go out with his bike frequently, then you need a suitable bike carrier no matter what type of vehicle you drive. Because of the limited storage inside of an RV or trailer, loading your bikes will be problematic.

The problem arises when you plan to make a group tour with multiple bikes. It is almost impossible to make a tour of 4 or 5 people where everyone has a bike and you need to load their bikes and also your bike along with them. A high-quality bike rack can carry multiple bikes at the same time and keep them secured and protected during the whole tour. Therefore, a lot of valuable room inside your RV or trailer will be saved.

You will have peace in mind when you know that your bikes are safe on the rack and with the available space inside your trailer, you can keep other necessary stuff that you will pick up during the trip.

Bike loading and rack’s portability:

A problem may arise when you simply just leave your bikes inside your trailer. That is the loading and unloading problem of your bikes. If you are somehow able to cram your bikes inside your RV, it will be very difficult to take them out. It will be a trouble because you need to take your bike out from a small space and you may damage or scratch the bike while taking it out. The trouble will be bigger if your trailer is filled with other stuff and all of the stuff is laying on your bike. If you really wish to damage your bike you can do that. There is also another problem when you want to take out your bike even if there is no stuff laying on your bike. The problem is the weight of your bike. It will be very tough to take out a heavy bike from inside an RV. All these loading and unloading problems can be solved easily if you install a bike carrier on your trailer. An ultimate bike carrier can make storing and removing your bikes a breeze.

However, this feature ultimately depends on the type of bike rack as some of the types need some effort to mount and unmount the bikes. For instance, storing and removing your bikes on a ladder-mount bike rack can be challenging due to the heights where this type of rack keeps your bikes.

When we talk about the portability of RV or trailer bike racks, we can see that most types of these racks stick to the RV or trailer. When you install a bike rack on your trailer or RV, you should know you can’t install and uninstall the rack again and again. These racks were meant to attach to the trailer for a long period of time, they don’t permit you to carry them around in your hand.

Keep your bikes safe from collision:

If you wish to proceed with your journey leaving your bikes inside your RV, then you will certainly make a grave mistake. Your bikes will tangle together and they will make frequent collisions with each other and with other things that will be laying around them. This situation will cause a great disaster and you will find your bikes damaged. I am sure you don’t want that to happen.

A good bike rack will offer assurance against this type of occurrence. Various bike carriers keep your bikes in various positions outside your RV and they provide adequate safety and security so that you can make a worry-free trip knowing that your bikes are safe.

Hitch-mount, ladder-mount, and bumper-mount racks keep your bikes relatively far from the trailer and ensure there is enough space between two bikes. That is how bike racks reduce the collision among bikes. But you can enhance the avoidance of collision if you tighten your bikes with straps or hooks so that they don’t sway when the road condition is not ideal.

How to Properly Install a Bike Rack on a Travel Trailer

The installation process of any RV or trailer bike rack depends on the model you end up buying. As we have discussed earlier in this article about the three different types of trailer bike racks, each of them has different installation methods as they mount on different positions of your trailer or RV.

Thankfully no matter what type of rack you buy, you will get an installation manual that will lead you to assemble and install the rack step-by-step. Each of the three different variants of trailer bike racks is very easy to install. However, we will demonstrate the procedure for installing a bumper-mount bike rack on your trailer or RV –

  • First, you need to be sure your bumper is suitable enough to adapt to a bumper-mount bike carrier. It cannot be welded with any spot or it cannot be made of Aluminum. It must have a square shape with a width ranging from 4” to 4.5”.
  • When you buy a bumper-mount bike rack, you will get an adapter that needs to be screwed into the bumper of your RV. If you find there is no such adapter when you open the package, then you need to purchase it separately. This adapter rests on both the top and bottom of the bumper.
  • Once you have successfully completed step-1 and step-2, now it’s time to screw the bolts and nuts. Double-check if you really tight the bracket over the bumper of your trailer otherwise, it can lead you to some serious complications.
  • Now slide the rest of the carrier into the place and fasten it with a bolt.

Does that sound too difficult? Honestly, I don’t think so. The installation process for a hitch-mount and ladder-mount is also pretty easy. All of them come with installation manuals that are filled with useful guidelines and detailed images.

The most simple and effortless installation process is offered with ladder-mount bike racks. You really don’t have to do much in order to install this type of rack. Just put it on the ladder at the back of your RV and tight it with some screws, that’s it. Hitch-mount rack might not have the most simple assembly, but I am sure you will figure it out with the help of its installation manual. Again, there are a lot of useful videos you can find on the internet that can help you if you face any difficulties installing any of these bike racks.

Once you have finally attained the knowledge about the usefulness of different types of bike racks by reading this article, it will be a breeze to choose the right trailer bike rack for you. You just need to apply the learning properly while you give a search for buying a trailer bike rack for yourself. And who knows you might end up buying one of these 11 bike racks from our list. Because the racks that we have selected are all quality products and they will be beneficial for different users with different sets of requirements.

No matter what is the design of the carrier or the type of carrier, just make sure it meets all the requirements that you have desired. If you can finally select a bike rack that is close to perfect, your entire trip with your RV or trailer will become much easier and relaxed.

You don’t have to load your bikes in your trailer anymore. Your RV or trailer will be left with enough room to store any stuff you may pick up during the trips. We wish you the best of luck for finding a suitable bike rack for your trailer and as always we thank you for reading this article. We hope this article has benefited you a lot.

My name is Dion Lewis.I’ve been cycling since my childhood. When I was in high school, I started racing in our local competitions. In my college life, I took a part-time job in a bicycle shop and I learned how to repair and maintain bicycles professionally.Though I love racing, mountain biking is another thing I do frequently. My friends, neighbors, and colleagues treat me as an avid rider and take my suggestions while they plan for a new bike or bike gear.

travel trailer with bike garage

Combination of either locking it to the trailer tongue with a chain through the frame, or I put in the truck bed and run a lock through a loop in the bed. If the weather is bad/wet, I will keep it under the canopy and locked to the stairs. Upgrading soon to a 5th wheel toyhauler with a separate garage, so they'll start going in there at night. Edit: I should add that most thieves are opportunists. My cable lock won't thwart a determined criminal, but a campground offers a ton of easier opportunities since so many folks don't lock their stuff up. If I will be away from the trailer for any extended period of time, they go inside.

To boot, slightly better fuel mileage with improved aero. The TT has a bunk house, which will hold two mountain bikes, it's a pia to do and when realistically your on the road for a while, you'll need the space. Side note, I left a key to one of the many cable locks I had back at camp one day. Instead of driving back for it, I used a simple wire crimper to cut the cable. Took less than a minute. When we were parked for days, I chained/ulocked the bikes to the TT tow chains. Go have fun! View attachment 1938253 Click to expand...

travel trailer with bike garage

I've hauled my bikes in the bed of my truck under a topper for years, never had an issue with people messing with them. Just get one with privacy glass or no windows, and a liftgate that locks. I also get carboard bike boxes and cut them up to use the sides between my bikes to pad them and keep them from scraping each other. These also help cover and hide what it is you have back there if people come peeking. IT's not fool proof but I haven't had a problem in the (counts fingers) 14ish years I've been doing this. Or maybe a cargo van would be safer in terms of locks and privacy.

travel trailer with bike garage

I only do short trips at this point, and put my bikes in the truck bed or chained to the trailer tongue or a stout tree in camp. I have a friend who is next to full time in his RV (motorhome) and he pulled out the bunk beds and converted the space to bike storage. When I "upgrade" my camper in the future, I'd like something that can keep the bikes inside. Not simply for security, but also for foul weather protection, better aerodynamics, and so on. Looking at the Sylvansport VAST, or a cargo trailer build, or something along those lines. I currently have a teardrop and a midsize pickup, to give you an idea of the sort of space I'm working with.

Everything goes inside the van, no windows. I had a bike stolen off my bike rack parked in the "secure" parking lot at work, cable locked to the bike rack.

We have a toy hauler, I really like having all the bikes inside. Out of sight, out of the weather. Handy place to wrench on the bikes when needed also.

travel trailer with bike garage

We try our best to store all the bikes inside the RV for our trips, if nothing else it keeps them cleaner as we drive around Alaska. We've got a small Coachman Freelander Micro 20cb and usually stick two bikes in the cab over sleeping spot for short trips. Easily get two road bikes up there or a mtb and a road bike. If needed, a third bike can be put on the bed in the back of the cabin on top of a moving blanket. And since my wife is tiny, there is enough room in one of the cargo compartments that I can stick any of her bikes in there if we need to bring all of our bikes. I do have a Yakima hitch mounted tray rack that comes along too, mostly for short transfers or nighttime storage so I can lock the bikes with the onboard locks, then lock the bikes to the hitch and that 4" RV bumper thing.

For our Class C motorhome we have two inexpensive mountain bikes which we lock to the bike rack and then put a bike cover over them and then a heavy duty cargo net over the bike cover. There is also a motion detecting alarm on the bikes that is hidden from view. I decided that more expensive bikes would be more attractive to thieves and the problem is one of having them stolen during a trip and being without them until we got back home and could try to find replacements. The safest way to transport bikes is in the bed of a pickup truck having a fiberglass cap and the windows blacked out. I mounted cross bars on the cap and used it to haul two kayaks as well. This means having a travel trailer with its limitations but such RV's provide by far the most bang for the buck.

Who makes a hardside camper with inner garage capable of storing two bicycles?

Outside of conversion vans - no one seems to make an inside garage for storing bikes or other gear.

Some people mount a smaller camper toward the back of a flatbed which leaves space between the camper and truck cab for storage.

I’ve been on the hunt for the same thing. I need a secure place to store my mountain bikes on a trip. So far ideas I’ve come up with are getting someone like alum-line to custom build a “garage” and then add whatever camper you want. You can also go with a custom camper builder like bundutec or similar. And lastly check out OAT (overland adventure truck) on Instagram. They’ve got a really cool habitation box and a garage for sale right now. I think a flatbed is necessary regardless of which option you go with. If you find anything on your search please share.

Yeah it’s called epro or Geo Pro 19FBTH. Pretty much where I have landed to address my family’s bike and sailing stuff. If it were just me solo? F150 hybrid power boost. Basic shell with pop up roof folding hard sides. Bike gets fork mounted on a 3 inch wide slide, to one side. Basics in flexible stowage. Induction hot plate the F150 can easily power for cooking. Electric heater same F150 can power it if needed. Typical truck cooler for cold ones. Done.. Water tote with basic water pump to hose off.

Buddha.

Finally in expo white.

We have videos on nearly everything we've done.... Lots to browse through. The bike rack was originally built for our 2019 F250 Crew Cab. We then moved it to our 2020 F250 Extended Cab - it bolted right up! Bikes fit either cab.

1. RV Rider E-Bike Rack

Hollywood Rack with a Lectric ebike.

Our TOP CHOICE is the RV Rider E-bike rack. The RV Rider bike rack for the back of RV's, motorhomes, and fifth wheels* carries 2 E-Bikes (up to 80 lbs. each). Special features include universal heavy-duty wheel holders for heavy load carrying capacity.

These wheel holders can fit any tire up to 5″ wide and include a ratchet wheel strap. Locking frame grabbers secure the bikes in place. The frame grabbers can attach to a bike's frame or seat tube with a diameter range of 1″- 2″; therefore, Bike Adapters are not needed .

They agreed and are giving our readers 20% off the RV Rider E-bike Rack. All you have to do is click the link above and enter the promo code RVLIFE to save 20%! They also offer free shipping in the U.S. (except Hawaii and Alaska).

Please note that this discount is only for the RV Rider Rack. You'll need a 2″ hitch and it *cannot be used on a travel trailer.

2. Fiamma Bike Rack

This unique bike rack is a top choice for various reasons. Its unique design allows it to be easily mounted to the rear of your RV, but still allows you to access your rig without having to remove it.

This brand has several different options depending on your rig and how high you want or need to mount your bikes. This rack can even be specially made for your rig.

The only downside is the steep price but it can be worth it if you need customizability. Is this the best RV bike rack?

3. Allen Sports 4-bike Hitch Rack

Allen Sports 4-bike Hitch Rack

The Allen Sports hitch rack is a popular choice for families or groups of travelers. The reason it is such a common choice is because of its load capacity. Many excellent racks can only haul two bikes, while the Allen can carry four!

This makes road trips with the family a little easier!

This stable rack is constructed from high-quality materials, making it very durable for your haul. It also comes with tie-downs to be able to carry any bike.

Finally, this rack is easily maneuvered once it is installed. That means that you can load your bikes easily and get on the road faster.

4. Swagman Traveler XC2

Swagman Traveler XC2

Some consider the Swagman bike rack your best choice overall when it comes to bike racks. This particular model is an adaptable hitch rack and can work easily with a number of different sized trailers or campers.

It fits into a 2″ hitch receiver and can hold up to 35-pound bicycles (70-pound maximum load).

Even though this is a hitch-mount rack, it can be used with a steel-welded RV bumper adapter as well.

Swagman products are known for their well-crafted, high durability, and ease of use.

5. Surco 501BR Ladder Mounted Bike Rack

Surco 501BR Ladder Mounted Bike Rack

The Surco 501 BR is the perfect choice for those looking for a ladder mount. It features pivoting arms so that you can easily access your RV ladder without having to remove the rack.

You can also still gain access to your hitch or bumper as well, making it easy to fulfill your hauling needs.

It is also versatile and can fit any ladder on an RV or van. The good news is that you do not need any additional tie-downs, straps, or hardware to use this model.

3 Main Types of Bike Racks

Best RV Bike Rack Options Ladder Bumper or Hitch

There are several different types of RV bike racks that you can choose from. Not all types will fit your specific needs, so it is important to know the differences. There are three main types of bike carriers that you can find: RV ladder bike racks, bumper mount racks, and hitch mounts.

Ladder Mounts

Ladder mounted bike racks, sometimes referred to as a ladder rack, hook onto the ladder rungs of your RV. It can also work with most ladders that are present on the back of a tow trailer.

The ladder mount rack is set up to mount your bikes vertically on the back of your RV, with the front tire pointed down closest to the ground.

This type of rack is a popular option because it allows you to still hitch your tow vehicle or trailer.

They are also more cost-effective than other types of racks. And provide a great option for those that do not have a bumper or hitch to install different types of bike racks.

One downside with these racks is that they usually have a lower weight capacity, and usually only come as a 2-bike rack. The limited bike capacity may not be a great choice for your family.

You will also need to take down the rack when you use your ladder. Keep that in mind when looking for a rack that is a good fit for your needs.

Bumper Mounts

These racks are sometimes called a bumper rack. And that is for good reason. They get mounted to your, you guessed it…RV bumper.

This type of mount can be one of your best options because your bikes can sit lower to the ground. That helps eliminate visibility issues when looking out your rear window or using a backup camera.

A bumper bike rack gets attached to your rear bumper. that means you need a very solid, steel-welded bumper on the rear of your rig to use it.

However, since this mount type requires the bumper will be carrying a lot of weight, these racks usually only hold two bikes.

With certain models, you may also be able to attach the rack, and still access your hitch. It depends on the design of your RV.

Hitch Mounts

A third option is a hitch mount bike rack. This type of bike rack mounts directly to your trailer hitch. However, they are only a viable option if you do not plan to use your hitch to tow a vehicle or trailer.

You will also want to ensure that your hitch has a hitch receiver or you will not be able to easily use this rack.

Most hitch receivers come in a 2′ standard size. But there are other sizes out there should you need them.

One benefit of this type of rack is that you can usually carry a greater number of bikes than ladder or bumper racks. Some can even carry up to five bikes, depending on the weight capacity of the rack.

I’ve been looking for a bike rack that will work well with my RV and this post has been incredibly helpful! I like the option of the hitch-mounted bike rack as it looks like it would be easy to install and take up less space than a bumper rack. Will definitely be considering one of these options for our next camping trip!

Have you considered the “Arvika” bike rack? They offer a product that can fit 4 bikes… The rack can fit on a A-Frame, but also on a car and RV. They have this hitch adapter that can be fit on any hitch. I also saw people mounting eBike on it! For now, I have it on my travel trailer and considering to buy the hitch adapter to travel with my car, prefer this than buying another bike rack! [Link deleted]

You need to consider an even better bike rack “Kuat”. It is extremely strong and rated for E-bikes. It tilts down and has a ramp you can attach to it to help loading and unloading. This is a big plus for those of us that do not want to end up with back problems.

Most hitch mount 2 ebike racks are NOT designed for travel trailers even though they state for RV. Trailers have a different side to side motion than a motor home. It could leave your multiple thousand dollars investment dragging in street. I have HOLLYWOOD 2 rack system that I can load and unload by myself in 20 minutes. I am 79. It was around $500, I have traveled so far nearly 10K miles with zero problems. Very easy to work with factory direct order. If you have trailer or fifth wheel be specific when you order. We have 2 RAD bikes that are wonderful.

Best RV Bike Rack: 7 Best & Safe Picks That Are Hassle Free to Install

travel trailer with bike garage

Given the limited space of an RV, finding a safe and appropriate spot for your road bikes can be an issue.

Take your worries away. This article will help you pick the best RV bike rack that will suit your needs and ideals.

Swagman takes the cake home both in price, value, and appeal. But if you’re in a pickle and need the cheapest bike rack that doesn’t compromise on quality, Surco doesn’t disappoint.

7 Best RV Bike Racks

Swagman traveler xc2 bike rack: best overall.

travel trailer with bike garage

Swagman has been one of the top brands that offer high-quality RV bike racks in the market. You’ll see a couple of their products on this list.

It’s not hard to see why.

This particular model exceeds expectations on what the brand has to offer to their patrons.

The manufacturers added unique features that make this hitch bike rack stand out among other Swagman products.

For starters, this hitch bike rack is compatible with various travel trailers and campers. The best part is that it is easy to install as it comes as a single piece .

Adaptability

While its adaptability to mount on various kinds of RVs is good all alone, you should take a second look at this model. It does not stop impressing travelers from all walks of life.

You noticed that we describe this model as a hitch mount type. With its two different mount systems, this product comes as a 2-in-1 package.

Besides a two-inch hitch receiver, there is a 4.5-inch bumper adapter for bumper mounting.

What can that do for you?

The convenience of course! Small trailer with little space? Not a problem for Swagman.

You don’t need to worry about the stability either since the adapter incorporates steel welding to reinforce its design so you can use Swagman for years and years of camping trips!

Adding to the premium features that contribute to the versatility of this product is its upright ratchet arm. This component can adjust to various bike frames, from children’s bikes to mountain bikes.

On top of these items, you also get adjustable hook designs to allow a unique way of mounting your bikes using their frames.

It seems that this is the most acclaimed product for all RV riders out there.

Loading Mechanism

All of these outstanding features supplement the mind-boggling bike capacity of this product.

The product itself only weighs about 36 pounds, but it can handle almost twice its weight when you maximize its 2-bike holding capacity.

Here’s what we mean by that:

With the sliding wheel hoops, you can fit two bikes in the bike rack at once, each having wheels ranging from 20 to 29 inches. This setup removes the problem of incurring damage to the bikes during transport.

Not to mention, its lightweight frame makes the product easy to carry. Its foldable design adds to its overall portability.

You can get all of these high-quality inclusions with lifelong insurance to boost your confidence in the product.

  • Easy installation
  • Comes with a lifetime warranty
  • Hitch pin not included in the package
  • Can only hold up to two bikes

Swagman 2-Bike RV Bumper Rack: Best Value

travel trailer with bike garage

It may not come as a surprise to you to see Swagman products dominating our list. Another top choice is the 2-bike rack model of the prestigious brand.

Unlike the previous item on this list, this product might have fewer offerings, but one can find its price worthy of its unique set of features.

Also, this product can only function as a bumper-mounted rack that can secure two bikes with ease.

Before you start criticizing this Swagman model, just know it also captures the practicality of all Swagman products out there.

Let’s dive more into it below:

Mounting Process

Installing this RV bike carrier to a solid bumper reinforced with steel welding is a piece of cake for anyone.

There’s ABSOLUTELY no issue in attaching it to either four-inch or 4.5-inch bumpers with the steel U-bolts included in the package.

Worried because the ride is bumpy? or perhaps the driver in the front seat constantly clocks in at 60 to 80 mph?

Take a look then at Swagman’s 6.5-inch and 8-inch bolts which further secure the RV bike rack around your bumper during RVing so no matter how much obstruction you drive through, your bikes are soundly safe.

Having a durable RV bumper rack is useless if it cannot hold two bikes securely during transport.

For additional support, the upright bar secures both bikes while on your way to an exciting exploration.

Here comes the not-so-great part

This model can only transport two bikes with a combined weight of 60 pounds. This value is way lesser than the bike capacity of the previous product.

Versatility

Despite this, it can match its sister product evenly in versatility, supporting various bike sizes, frames, and wheels.

It comes with two sets of slots where you can insert the bike wheels before securing the bikes with the central post.

What’s interesting about this product is it comes as two separate pieces . Therefore, you can place the two bikes far enough from each other depending on their sizes.

You can also find the brand’s consistency in addressing durability concerns of RV bike racks. You can see by yourself the state-of-the-art designs of its racks in this particular model.

While it is significantly lighter than the previous product, you can ensure its durability over time with its heavy-duty steel construction.

You might adore the black color of this product. This painting style, supported by powder coating, has a purpose beyond aesthetics, as it protects the bumper-mounted rack from corrosion.

Overall, the product does not fail to impress its users by providing functional features at a valuable price and aesthetics.

  • Super lightweight
  • Sturdy design
  • Flexible layout
  • Only two bikes can fit in
  • Installation might be time-consuming

Surco 501BR Ladder Mounted Bike Rack: Budget Pick

travel trailer with bike garage

You’ve encountered bumper-mounted and hitch-mounted RV bike racks so far.

So let’s switch that up, shall we?

Enter the ladder-mounted rack; in the name of Surco 501BR Ladder Mounted Bike Rack.

Generally, the best RV ladder-mount bike rack will secure your bikes at an RV ladder of your fifth-wheel, travel trailer, or utility van.

With that, most RV travelers prefer the best RV bike racks with ladder mounts that fit in all ladders.

Compatible with any RV rack, an RV ladder rack is the most economical choice for RV travelers who:

  • Are on a tight budget
  • Have minimal storage space
  • Want to be FREE of any hassle to assemble the ladder mounted rack. All you have to do is to install it in your RV’s ladder.

Ladder Support

The setup goes as simple as that, making its installation process quick and easy. You don’t need any bonus straps as the ladder-mounted rack itself is enough to secure your bikes on the RV.

However, you might want to check your ladder first before getting this product.

CHECK if your ladder is a one-inch tube ladder , as the RV ladder-mount bike rack does not fit in a 1.5-inch ladder.

Unloading two bikes can also be as simple as attaching them to the ladder-mounted rack. Grab, Go, and Rest anyone?

The secret lies in the pivoting arms of the model that provides easy access to the ladder . This feature removes the need for the removal and installation of the ladder racks over and over again.

Exhausting, right? That’s why we made sure to make it to our top 3!

Despite this feature, the ladder mounted bike rack still restricts your access to the RV ladder.

While you don’t necessarily need to carry the RV ladder bike rack often, you should find the lightweight RV rack easy to handle.

This four-pound ladder mounted rack has a load capacity of 60 pounds for the two bikes combined. You can fit any bike size, frame, and wheel in this 2-bike ladder rack.

Construction Style

Aesthetically, the premium aluminum construction polished with an elegant satin finish will make the back of your travel trailer look nice and clean.

More than the aesthetics, the heavy-duty aluminum component of this model protects the RV ladder bike rack from corrosion and rusting over time.

After seeing all these excellent features for the best RV bike rack, you might find it surprising to know that you can get this product at a low price.

Yes, you read it right.

It should be mind-blowing to know one affordable product that comes as a complete package. What more can you ask?

You simply need to it for yourself!

  • Extremely affordable
  • Compatible with ladders of any RV type
  • Unloading of bikes possible without removing the rack itself
  • Can only fit in a one-inch tube ladder
  • Two-bike capacity only

Swagman RV Approved Dispatch Hitch Bike Rack

travel trailer with bike garage

We hope you aren’t tired of seeing Swagman products?

Perhaps, you might be expecting a lot about this model since you witnessed how great the other Swagman products were.

So let us entice you a little bit more as a Swag-man. Get it?

You’re right to assume this is yet another high-quality product offered by the brand. It seems that there’s no one stopping them from catering to the needs of people who love RVing.

You can tell that this Swagman product is different from the first two racks mentioned in this list. However, you will see that it contains a distinct set of features that make it stand out.

Functional Components

For one, this trailer hitch-mount rack has a loading capacity of 90 pounds, way higher than the 70-pound capacity of the XC2 model.

However, both racks, supported by hitch mounts, can only carry two bikes at once.

Another thing about this product that you might love is the sliding wheel trays.

We know what you’re thinking… who the hell cares right?!

Well, here’s why you MIGHT care now:

These items let you adjust the hitch receiver to various bike types, so not only are you assured of the security of your bikes, but whether it’s a kid bike, adult, or pro-bike, the hitch receiver carries all.

This Swagman model exemplifies the brand’s dedication and consistency in providing versatile racks for everyone. The brand does its job in catering to the several needs of RV camping.

Worried about how the adjustable bike racks can secure your bikes in place?

This model has an a djustable hook design to hold your bikes in place on your travel trailers. There are bonus straps that come as adjustable wheel ratchet straps.

Compatibility

These components work hand-in-hand to secure your bikes in your travel trailer during road trips. You should have no more worries about bringing your road bikes with you while RVing.

Now comes the sweet treat:

Components worth mentioning and one you might find functional are the locking cables and hitch pin.

You might notice that these items are lacking in the previously mentioned Swagman racks.

Despite the numerous components included in the product, the trailer hitch-mount bike rack is easy to install .

This product is a testament to the brand’s never-ending commitment to innovate its RV bike racks over time.

In turn, they have established a good reputation in the industry with its numerous loyal patrons.

However, all these premium features come at a cost. You might want to prepare your budget in purchasing this product.

  • Huge loading capacity
  • Quick and simple installation
  • Adjustable bike fits
  • Relatively expensive
  • Can only hold two bikes at once

Camco RV Ladder Mount Bike Rack

travel trailer with bike garage

We have an exciting addition to our list of the best RV ladder bike racks. This time, you will meet another trusted brand for the best RV bike racks.

If you cannot afford the Surco RV bike rack , you’re NOT out of luck.

Consider the Camco RV Ladder Mount Bike Rack.

It has the essential features you need for a bike rack that comes with ladder mounts.

And the best part?

You don’t need a large amount of money to enjoy these exciting offers.

All you need is ladder mounts to use this RV bike rack.

Installation Process

Most people can handle the installation process all by themselves.

However, if you have any issues in doing so, you could ask for Camco’s expert installation add-on .

This add-on might cost you a little more, but you might not want to risk a doubtful installation of the RV bike rack.

After all, you’re RVing for the long haul, aren’t you?

It follows the standard size for ladder bike racks, so you must fit it in any ladder. Having ladder mounts for the RV bike rack gives you a couple of advantages in holding your bikes.

You might try using your ladder itself as a tough spot where you can lock your bikes for some time. Consequently, you don’t need an extremely long lock to secure your bikes in place.

Also, you will find two sets of soft grips on the horizontal rungs. These grips keep your bikes away from any damage on a couple of long-road expeditions.

Manipulation

Unloading your bikes is as easy as loading them to the RV bike rack.

If there’s one word to really describe this bike rack.. . It would be “Easy.”

The product screams convenience left and right, hassle-free in all corners, and easy just all over the place.

However, go easy on this model, alright? Your bikes should not exceed the bike rack’s loading capacity of 60 pounds to prevent any issues.

Be careful in getting this model if your ladder placement would make your bikes stick out beyond the side of your RV.

You don’t have to worry about this RV bike rack competing for the storage space in your RV.

Say goodbye to space issues and say hello to a new Marie Kondo RV series -if you want to keep the RV bike rack in a safe place inside your RV, you can fold it up for temporary storage.

Folding the RV bike rack does not require a lot of effort as it only weighs eight pounds making it easy to manipulate .

You can also strap this RV bike rack on top of your roof in the most secure way possible.

Perhaps, the foldable design of this bike rack makes it stand out among its competitors. If you’re looking for that feature on your bike rack, don’t hesitate to purchase one as it would be worth your money.

  • Foldable design for temporary storage
  • Add-on expert installation
  • Bonus straps for added security
  • Children bikes impossible to fit in
  • Loaded bikes oriented horizontally
  • Folding can cause damage

Allen Sports 4-Bike Hitch Rack

travel trailer with bike garage

What happens when two bikes aren’t enough for the entire group?

The previous products on this list can only carry up to two bikes at once.

You might be thinking… do I have to buy multiple bike racks?

Think again.

Are you willing to invest in the best RV bike rack and pay for it without meeting your capacity needs?

We don’t think so.

Because believe it or not, there are bike racks that can accommodate more than 2 bikes and Allen Sports 4-Bike Hitch Rack found a way to do so!

Now how can a bike rack with hitch mounts carry four bikes all alone? Here’s why:

Loading Capacity

Its hitch receiver allows you to mount the RV bike rack directly to your hitch, removing the need for any additional components.

It also comes with a paddle cradle that can rotate 360 degrees , letting you fit bikes that come with different bike tires, frames, and sizes.

Take that bike racks with only a 2-bike capacity!

However, carrying four bikes at once is a complicated feature that might require professional help. Unlike other racks in this list, installing this bike rack would not be an easy process.

For starters, this RV bike rack can only fit in a two-inch trailer hitch. As there are various kinds of two-inch trailer hitches, you should seek help when dealing with Classes III and IV .

But give us just 5 minutes more.

Hold back for a moment before releasing a good amount of money for the bike rack you are rooting for this time.

We want you to make the right purchase and spend your money wisely.

So before making your purchase, consider these things first to make sure you get the value of what you’re paying for.

Type of Bike Rack

Going through the list, you already encountered the general types of a bike rack.

You witnessed the distinct characteristics of each type from the best bike racks included in the list.

Each type of bike racks offers a unique set of advantages while having its corresponding disadvantages. Therefore, one must be familiar with the specifications of each bike rack type.

You should check if a particular bike rack fits your RV layout to prevent any issues in the long run.

For travel trailers…

bike racks with a hitch receiver are the most POPULAR choice.

Installing and removing one is quick and easy if it’s a perfect fit for your trailer hitch. They often come in different forms and designs, making them adaptable to different bike types.

What if you have a tow vehicle?

In that case, you must ensure first that you would not use your hitch often for other functions.

If you are expecting this, then you might want to get bumper racks instead. Although using a bumper-mounted rack might require you to have a steel-graded bumper, this rack does not block your driving view all the time.

If you’re on a budget…

A ladder-mounted rack might be an ideal pick. Given their unique configuration, most users had safety concerns in carrying their bikes on the RV with this rack installed.

However, several tests proved that ladder racks are generally safe .

User-Friendly Attributes

After deciding which rack type is the perfect fit for your RV, the NEXT step is to see how you can use and manipulate the rack without any hassle or discomfort.

Check if you can safely install the rack all by yourself.

In that matter, you should have no issues with most products mentioned in the list.

Loading and unloading the bikes might be tedious when your rack layout is too complex to hold your bikes securely in place. ‘

A ladder-mounted rack does not need any extra components to get this job done. All that it needs is on your RV trailer itself.

There might be times you want to store the rack TEMPORARILY when not in use. Well, the Camco RV Ladder Bike Rack would be the perfect pick for you.

Product Quality

This attribute shouldn’t come as a surprise to you.

A product’s quality must be one of your priorities in choosing the best unit, even in simple things like a bike rack.

Examine the construction style of a bike rack to check its durability and functionality . In doing so, consider the materials used in making the product.

Meanwhile, reading  about your desired product will help you evaluate if it is worth your money.

You can find valuable information from these reviews to guide you in picking the best bike rack for you.

Type and Number of Bikes

Perhaps, the most significant feature you should look for in a bike rack is its capacity.

After all, this is the essence of a bike rack that should be your priority.

A typical bike rack can only carry up to two bikes, which is enough for most RV travelers. However, if you have more than two bikes in use, the Allen Sports 4-Bike Hitch Rack could be a great companion.

If you settle on a two-bike rack…

Make sure it can carry your heavy bikes without sacrificing its stability. In that case, the Swagman RV Approved Dispatch Hitch Bike Rack could be the best choice with its 90-pound capacity.

In terms of versatility, the simple-looking Quick Products RV Bumper-Mounted Rack can fit well in almost all types of bikes with different wheels, frames, and sizes.

Finally, you must be mindful of the total price of the RV rack you wish to purchase. After all, you might need other essential items in your RV beyond a bike rack.

Sure, you might expect that a cheaper option comes with less value. However, the Surco 501BR bike rack proves otherwise as it offers most of the features you will find in premium products at a low price.

With all the products included in this list, it is hard to ignore the unique attributes each bike rack has to offer.

With that, we pick the top three bike racks that came out stronger among other bike racks mentioned in the article.

2nd-Runner Up: Surco 501BR Ladder Mounted Bike Rack

1st-Runner Up: Swagman 2-Bike Bumper Rack

Swagman  takes the cake home both in price, value, and appeal. But if you’re in a pickle and need the cheapest bike rack that doesn’t compromise on quality,  Surco  doesn’t disappoint.

travel trailer with bike garage

The manufacturers added  unique features  that make this hitch bike rack stand out among other Swagman products.

For starters, this hitch bike rack is compatible with various travel trailers and campers. The best part is that it is easy to install as it  comes as a single piece .

You noticed that we describe this model as a hitch mount type. With its two different mount systems, this product comes as a  2-in-1 package.

The convenience of course!  Small trailer  with little space? Not a problem for Swagman.

On top of these items, you also get  adjustable hook designs  to allow a unique way of mounting your bikes using their frames.

You can get all of these high-quality inclusions with  lifelong insurance  to boost your confidence in the product.

travel trailer with bike garage

There’s ABSOLUTELY  no issue  in attaching it to either four-inch or 4.5-inch bumpers with the steel U-bolts included in the package.

Worried because the ride is bumpy?  or perhaps the driver in the front seat constantly clocks in at 60 to 80 mph?

What’s interesting about this product is it comes as  two separate pieces . Therefore, you can place the two bikes far enough from each other depending on their sizes.

You can also find the brand’s consistency in  addressing durability concerns  of RV bike racks. You can see by yourself the state-of-the-art designs of its racks in this particular model.

travel trailer with bike garage

With that, most RV travelers prefer the best  RV bike racks  with ladder mounts that fit in all ladders.

Compatible with any RV rack, an RV ladder rack is the  most economical choice  for RV travelers who:

  • Want to be FREE of any  hassle  to assemble the ladder mounted rack. All you have to do is to install it in your RV’s ladder.

That’s why we made sure to make it to our top 3!

travel trailer with bike garage

So let us entice you a little bit more as a Swag-man.  Get it?

For one, this trailer hitch-mount rack has a loading capacity of 90 pounds,  way higher  than the 70-pound capacity of the XC2 model.

This model has an a djustable hook design  to hold your bikes in place on your travel trailers. There are bonus straps that come as adjustable wheel ratchet straps.

Components worth mentioning and one you might find functional are the  locking cables and hitch pin.

Despite the numerous components included in the product, the trailer hitch-mount bike rack is  easy to install .

travel trailer with bike garage

We have an exciting addition to our list of the  best RV ladder  bike racks. This time, you will meet another trusted brand for the best RV bike racks.

However, if you have any issues in doing so, you could ask for Camco’s  expert installation add-on .

Also, you will find  two sets of soft grips  on the horizontal rungs. These grips keep your bikes away from any damage on a couple of long-road expeditions.

If there’s one word to really describe this bike rack.. .  It would be “Easy.”

However, go easy on this model, alright? Your bikes  should not  exceed the bike rack’s loading capacity of 60 pounds to prevent any issues.

Say goodbye  to space issues and  say hello  to a new Marie Kondo RV series -if you want to keep the RV bike rack in a safe place inside your RV, you can fold it up for temporary storage.

Folding the RV bike rack does not require a lot of effort as it only weighs eight pounds making it  easy to manipulate .

travel trailer with bike garage

It also comes with a paddle cradle that can  rotate 360 degrees , letting you fit bikes that come with different bike tires, frames, and sizes.

For starters, this RV bike rack  can only fit  in a two-inch trailer hitch. As there are various kinds of two-inch trailer hitches, you should seek help when dealing with  Classes III and IV .

When it comes to durability concerns, this product has a patent design that testifies its  high-end durability .

You should also have no worries  about your bike’s security whenever you decide to stopover. The unit comes with a lock and two keys to ensure your bikes are safe and secure.
