3. HAND-PICKED ITINERARIES & ACCOMMODATIONS

Knowing where to go and what to do in Norway is not a simple or straight forward process for non-Norwegians. There are many language and cultural barriers to making the best decisions for your trip. Going with an expert guide company who knows exactly how to make the most of your trip cuts through the complexity and ensures a fantastic trip. We very carefully select our itineraries and the accommodations on our itineraries so you can have a premier experience.

5. SMALL GROUP ADVENTURE TOURS

Exploring Norway in a small group is the way to go. The trails in Norway are unlike most places – they are organically developed trails that often go straight up mountains instead of switchbacking gently across slopes like many areas. The nature of the hiking and trails is such that hiking paces will vary significantly, and our small groups (maximum 12 guests) allow us to take care of our guests on and off the trail at the Wildland standard.

MORE ABOUT NORWAY HIKING VACATIONS

Why a norway hiking vacation.

Norway’s star is on the rise as an adventure travel destination. Since 2015 the homeplace of the Vikings has rapidly increased in popularity, and for good reason. It is one of the safest countries in the world. Transportation is easy and reliable. English is a second language, and most Norwegians can speak it and understand it proficiently. The country literally has endless hiking opportunities, and culturally, Norway has a very strong connection with nature which helps inspire Norway hiking and trekking tours. The scenery is breathtaking with fjords , towering ocean side peaks, alpine lakes, unique wildlife, charming fishing villages and more. Sustainability is a huge focus for Norway, which makes it in many ways an environmentally friendly place to visit, and hiking around the mountains is a long tradition for these northern European dwellers. Really, the question should be “why not a Norway hiking vacation?”

LOFOTEN OR HUT TO HUT TREK?

We offer two trips in Norway – our Lofoten Islands Lodge-based Tour and our Mountains to Fjords Hut to Hut Trek . Many guests wonder which trip is the right one for them, so we will offer some advice about that here. The first differentiator between these trips is right in the names – the accommodations. On the Lofoten tour we stay in hotels, many in seaside towns. The Hut to Hut Trek on the other hand stays in national park mountain huts in Jotunheimen National Park, which are very nice for backcountry accommodations but still very rustic and communal compared to hotels. The second major differentiator is difficulty level. The Hut to Hut Trek is a Level 4, Lofoten is Level 3. Both trips have light day packs, so the difference is 100% the quality and difficulty of the trails. You can expect long days of hiking with significant elevation gains and losses on the Hut to Hut Trek, where as Lofoten has shorter hikes but still plenty of elevation gains and losses.

FOOD IN NORWAY

Norwegians have a very unique approach to their three daily meals, and it’s important to understand these customs when traveling to Norway. Breakfasts and lunches are often very simple and normally consist of simple bread and cheese or bread and cold meat sandwiches. Dinners are much more elaborate and usually include meat or fish, vegetables, breads or potatoes and other side dishes. If you’re a vegetarian, there will often be one option – it will be very tasty, but don’t expect an abundance of choices. On our Norway tours we bring more of an American approach, but we still honor the Norwegian approach as part of the cultural experience. So you can expect a hybrid approach to the meals that incorporates American and Norwegian meal traditions .

HIKING IN NORWAY

The hiking trails in Norway are very unique and generally more difficult than other trails around the world. Our Lofoten Islands tour features short hikes with significant elevation gains and losses; the Hut to Hut Trek features longer hikes also with big elevation gains and losses. But the quality of the trails is the most notable characteristic of hiking in Norway. The trails are not carved out of the mountainsides by trail crews like they are in the USA, Canada and other places. They are formed organically by people using the same path for decades or even centuries. Because of this the trails tend to go straight up the mountainsides instead of switchbacking. So be prepared for steep, strenuous trails that will reward you with some of the most dramatic scenery in the world.

WHEN TO HIKE IN NORWAY

Norway is very much a summer destination if your main interest is hiking. Even in summer, you can expect the weather to be variable with rain, wind, sun and sudden and dramatic shifts from one to the other. Below is a table showing the average temperatures and rainfall in the summer months.

Self guided hiking tour in the Fjords of Norway

Itinerary Norway Hiking Self Guided

Day 1 arrival to bergen.

Today is your arrival day and we’ve left you time to relax and explore Bergen! The vibrant and historic city of Bergen is Norway’s second largest city and has a lot to offer. Most famous is Bryggen; the wooden buildings on Bergen’s iconic wharf are reflections of its history in the Hanseatic League. St. Mary’s Church is Bryggen’s tallest and oldest structure, dating to 1180. The Hanseatic museum provides wonderful insight into daily life of German merchants living and working here during the Hanseatic era. Just beside it, is one of Norway’s best-preserved fortresses; Bergenhus. The oldest structure on site, Håkon’s Hall, dates to 1250, and was a royal residence during the Middle Ages. Tonight, you will have a welcome orientation (by phone and an in-person meeting when you get to Balestrand.)

Meals: None Overnight: Bergen

Day 2 Hiking in Bergen to Mount Fløyen: 3-10 km / 2-6 mi

Today’s hike is a walk with beautiful views and is suitable for all ability levels! You will start with a ride on a lovely cable car (roundtrip tickets are included for the cable car.) Take the cable car up, or down, or some of the way. At the top, which is 1049 feet above the city, you can enjoy a bird’s eye view of the city! Stop for a break in the café, restaurant, or at the scenic viewpoint. Several nice walks start from the top, so it is quite easy to continue on. For example, on short walk takes you to the small lake “Blåmannsvatnet” (+ 5 km.) To finish your day, you can either take the cable car down to the city centre, or walk down. The path winds its way down from the mountain with many twists and turns, but it is easy to follow. Make sure you have plenty of time to admire the views and stop in the one of the parks! Tonight, enjoy dinner on your own.

Meals: breakfast Distance/Elevation: 3-10 km / 2-6 mi, 2-3 hours Highlights: Mount Fløyen and panoramic views Overnight: Bergen

Day 3 Bergen - Balestrand with Hike: 4 km / 2.5 mi

This morning take the coastal express boat into the Sognefjorden, whose glacier waters mirror snow-covered majestic mountains. Admire small villages along the fjord and cascading waterfalls as you make your way to Balestrand at mid day. As early as the 18th century, Balestrand was known as a popular tourist destination for the wealthy and also many artists from Norway and Europe. A number of artists built their summer residences in the dragon style, a popular architectural style from this period. Many of these houses are well preserved today, creating a unique architectural environment and also Scandinavia’s largest concentration of dragon style houses. Take a walk along King Bele’s Road, to enjoy these houses or take a longer hike, which also features artistic influences! Tonight, stay at the Kvikne’s Hotel (from 1877), with its imposing façade facing the fjord.

Meals: breakfast & dinner Distance/Elevation: 2 different options in the afternoon – ca 4 km / 2.5 mi Highlights: boat ride, exploring Balestrand, cider tasting option Overnight: Balestrand

Day 4 Hiking to Raudmelen: 8 km / 5 mi

After breakfast, today’s hiking starts from the hotel. Follow a relatively steep path up through the woods, until it opens up to a view over Balestrand and the Sognefjord. From here, follow the path upwards to a marvellous viewpoint over Sognefjord and Esefjella. On one side you will see the bright green slopes of Balestrand and on the other, dramatic rocky mountains towards Esedalen. Follow along the ridge towards the highest peak, Raudmelen, with its expansive views on both sides. Note: There are plenty of options to take shorter routes in case of bad weather or other.

Optional services, advance booking required: -Easier hike (ca 5 km) that can end with a cider tasting.

Meals: breakfast, packed lunch & dinner Distance/Elevation: 8 km / 5 mi, 100- 978 m, 6 hours Highlights: views from Raudmelen Overnight: Balestrand

Day 5 Hiking Årøy – Solvorn: 8 km / 5 mi

Transfer from Balestrand to Årøy. From the end of Barsnesfjorden you pass the mighty Årøy River and start the hike at the other side of the bridge. Follow the same road that King Holy Olav took in 1023 with his men. This is the path where they found fresh water from the source and since then, was named the “Olav Source.” The path goes up to Hafslo and continues along the lake until Galden, where you hike down to picturesque Solvorn. A small village with white wooden houses, Solvorn is busy in the summertime with its public beach, ferry to Urnes, and nice summer atmosphere. The town has a small café and a nice art gallery in one of the old boathouses. Overnight at the historic Walaker Hotel, which is over 370 years old. Passed on from generation to generation since 1690, the hotel is now an attraction in itself.

Optional services, advance booking required: -Transfer (or bus) – hike from Nyre from Solvorn, or to Legene. Both tours along the fjord, 4 to 8 km.

Meals: breakfast, packed lunch & dinner Distance/Elevation: 8 km / 5 mi, 240 m, easy walk Highlights: hiking by Årøy River, Hafslo Lake, cute town of Solvorn Overnight: Solvorn

Day 6 Hiking Molden: 10 km / 6 mi

Transfer to Molden, ca. 6 km to reach the trailhead. The first few km follow trails through the forest, then the path rises steeply and climbs to Svarthiller, with its spectacular view over the fjord towards Ornes. Leaving Svarthiller, the path turns and winds its way past steep crags before levelling out, where you reach the top of Molden, at 1116 m above sea level. The best view is to the east, over the innermost parts of Lusterfjorden with Nes and Høyheimsvik in the foreground. Molden is described as the finest viewpoint of the Sognefjord, with a panoramic view of the fjord arms and the high mountains of Jotunheimen. Return to Solvorn to relax and have dinner.

Optional visits, payable on-site: -Ferry to Urnes: (20 minute ferry) visit the famous Urnes stave church and hike from the church. You can also add this to an extra day. -Visit the inside of the historical Urnes church

Meals: breakfast, packed lunch & dinner Distance/Elevation: 10 km, 1116 m Highlights: magnificent Molden, Urnes stave church option Overnight: Solvorn

Lisa Margolin

We had an AMAZING time on our Norway Hiking tour, and the trip definitely met or exceeded our expectations. We wondered (at the outset) if we could have found enough information to plan a trip this good ourselves, and came to the conclusion that we simply couldn’t. There’s just too much insider information that you can’t get from here, about hidden gems over there. And your local point person was a fantastic, flexible, accommodating. We had good luck with amazing weather, as a bonus. Highlights: Bergen hike at top of Floyen; Cider tasting and lunch; hike in Balestrand to top of fjord; both Walaker and Kviknes hotels (and meals); stave church visit. In Bergen, we would have preferred a hotel that was not so close to the shops and restaurants, but that is our preference. Overall, we had a great trip!

Hrmm. Looks like you're using an older browser, which means some site features may not work they way they should. For the full gadventures.com experience, we recommend upgrading to the most recent version of your browser . It's worth it! Honest!

Hardangerfjord & Lake Bondhusvatnet

  • Activity Overview: Cultural touring and hiking
  • Activity Level: Easy, 700' elevation gain/loss
  • Activity Length: 2-4 hours, up to 5 miles

Welcome to Norway! Our adventure begins in the UNESCO World Heritage City of Bergen with a funicular ride up Mt. Floyen. At the summit, we enjoy a breathtaking view of the port city and the surrounding fjord and mountain landscape.

Mid-morning, we transfer to the Hardangerfjord region, home to wild and rugged mountains rising from the fjord, verdant farmland, and storybook villages. We have lunch sourced from local ingredients, before hiking to the beautiful glacier-fed Lake Bondhusvatnet.

Later this afternoon, we cross the Hardangerfjord between Utne and Kinsavik, arriving shortly afterward at our fjordside hotel in Ullensvang.

Accommodations

Ullensvang Hotel

Ullensvang Hotel Lofthus Hardanger, Norway

The Ullensvang Hotel has been run by the same family for five generations and offers the perfect balance of rich traditions with modern facilities on the beautiful Hardangerfjord.

Husedalen Hike & Cider Farm

  • Activity Overview: Hiking
  • Activity Level: Moderate, up to 2,300' elevation gain/loss
  • Activity Length: 2-4 hours, up to 6 miles

Our hike today begins in Kinsarvik and wends through the Husedalen Valley along one of the most beautiful trails in Norway. We see a succession of stunning waterfalls on the way from Kinsarvik to the Hardangervidda mountain plateau, the largest high mountain plateau in northern Europe. Because the hike is an out-and-back trail, it can be shortened for those who prefer a less strenuous day.

Early this evening, we are met by a local farmer who will walk with us to the Alvavoll Fruit & Cider farm. Here we learn about the production of apples, pears, plums, honey, apple juice, and cider, and have an opportunity to taste some of the world-famous cider produced in the Hardanger region. Dinner will follow back at our hotel.

Folgefonna Glacier Walk & Voss

  • Activity Overview: Glacier walk
  • Activity Level: Moderate, elevation gain and loss is based on the group and conditions on the glacier
  • Activity Length: 2-3 hours, 2-3 miles

This morning, a 1.5-hour drive brings us to the Folgefonna Glacier, the third largest in Norway. After a safety briefing, our experienced glacier guides take us for a walk across the ice. Surrounded by the Hardangerfjord, Rosendal Alps, and the North Sea, this promises to be an exhilarating adventure.*

Afterward, we transfer to Voss (approximately 2 hours) and our hotel for the next two nights. Known for outdoor and adventure activities, Voss is a charming, small town in the lake district, situated between the mountains and the fjords. Most of the melting water from snowmelt and rainfall comes through this region, and the lakes, rivers, and waterfalls are ever-changing depending on the water flow.

*Our guides continuously monitor conditions on the glacier. If conditions are better for snowshoeing, we will trade in our crampons for snowshoes. If it is unsafe to be on the ice, we will hike to the Hovden Viewpoint, an alpine plateau with stunning views of Sorfjorden - one of Norway's most striking fjords (3-4 hours, 4.5 miles, elevation gain 1500').

Hotel Store Ringheim

Hotel Store Ringheim Voss, Norway

This 15-room historic hotel in a restored farmhouse offers views over different parts of the surrounding farm landscape and distant mountains.

Sea Kayaking on Aurlandsfjord

  • Activity Overview: Sea kayaking
  • Activity Level: Easy to moderate
  • Activity Length: 4-6 hours with stops, 5-8 miles

Today, we venture into the waterways of Norway - the fjords! Our morning begins with a 1-hour scenic transfer to Flam, where we gear up for a glorious day of kayaking on the Aurlandsfjord, one of Norway's most picturesque fjords. Our guides offer expert instruction, and all necessary equipment is provided.

Our adventure takes us past unique rock formations, waterfalls, and local small farms. We stop for a break at a suitable landing point and enjoy a picnic lunch.

The return journey brings very different views, looking at the inner part of the fjord back toward Flam. Upon completion of our kayak route, we return to our hotel where we have a chance to freshen up before dinner.

Voss Folkemuseum, Farm Visit, & Stave Church

  • Activity Overview: Cultural visits and walking
  • Activity Level: Easy, 300' elevation gain/loss
  • Activity Length: 1-hour visits, 1-hour walking

After breakfast, we take a short walk from our hotel to the Voss Folkemuseum to be transported back in time. When the museum was founded in 1917, one of its goals was to preserve the old farmstead at Molster (Molstertunet), where all the buildings still stand where they were once built. The wooden walls of the buildings have been weathered brownish-grey and the roofs are covered with turf or ancient slates. Inside the old farmhouse the walls still give off the pungent smell of smoke from the open hearth.

From here, we drive to the historical hotel and viewpoint of Stalheim, offering extraordinary views of the Naeroy Valley. A short hike up the side valley brings us to the farm of Sivle, where we enjoy a local meal and hear about the old traditions of summer farming.

As we depart, we take the steep serpentine road leading down the front side of the mountain between two cascading waterfalls. To the north is the Sivlefossen waterfall, and to the south, the Stalheimsfossen waterfall. As melting water plunges over the cliff edge it makes its way from the mountains to the fjord.

Early this afternoon, we visit the Hopperstad Stave Church in Vik. Believed to have been built around 1130, it is one of the oldest stave churches in existence. Inside, we see examples of carvings from the Middle Ages, and a guided tour of the church offers insight into the era connecting modern day Christianity and Viking beliefs.

Later today, we cross the Sognefjord and reach the township of Balestrand to check in to our waterfront hotel.

Kviknes Hotel

Kviknes Hotel Balestrand, Norway

This historic hotel boasts a large art collection, an onsite restaurant and bar, and beautiful views. Past guests have included Kaiser Wilhelm II and other prominent figures.

Balestrand Hike

  • Activity Level: Easy to moderate, 1,870' elevation gain/loss
  • Activity Length: 2-4 hours, 4 miles

Today's hike takes us from the Kreklingen Nature Trail to the stunning Buraasi lookout point. As we climb through moss covered forests and pine-clad trails, our vista opens up at approximately 1870 feet where we have staggering views of Balestrand and the majestic Sognefjorden. Here we enjoy a picnic lunch, or nistepakke, before our descent.

Later this afternoon, our guide will lead an optional Heritage Walk along the coast where we learn about this historic village and the life of the artists who lived here in the 19th century. Others may enjoy a bit of free time before we gather again for dinner.

Skagastols Lake Hike

  • Activity Level: Moderate, 1,475' elevation gain/loss
  • Activity Length: 5 hours, 5 miles

This morning, we depart for Jotunheimen National Park, also known as "the home of the giants." From the historical Turtagro Hotel, we follow a stream through the lush Skagastol Valley towards Skagastol Lake. We can sense the ancient mountaineering history of this trekkers' paradise, as the mountains here were first climbed by British lords in the 19th century. At this high alpine lake we enjoy a picnic lunch surrounded by glaciers and vertical peaks before our descent.

This evening, we stay at a luxurious guest house where we settle in for a cozy evening and a fine dining experience.

Fjelleventyret Guest House

Fjelleventyret Guest House Skjak, Norway

Located at the very heart of Norway, at the junction between majestic mountains and the mesmerising Geirangerfjorden, is a boutique farm-stay with cozy rooms and a restaurant and bar.

Geirangerfjord & Alesund

  • Activity Level: Moderate, 1,200' elevation gain/loss
  • Activity Length: 2-3 hours, 2.25 miles

We enjoy a scenic drive past Lom as we head to the Geirangerfjord region this morning. Geirangerfjord was granted UNESCO status in 2005 and offers stunning views of several waterfalls, including the famous Seven Sisters.

We embark on a hike from Vesteras farm, an idyllic old working farm sitting high above the town. After about an hour, we arrive to the thundering Storseterfossen waterfall, which we can walk behind. Upon returning to the farm, we enjoy a traditional lunch before heading into town for a different view of Geirangerfjord.

Our final drive takes us to the coastal city of Alesund. Here, we make our way up to the Mount Aksla lookout, which offers fantastic views of the city.

We gather this evening for our final dinner and celebration of our journey, where we raise a glass to new friendships, shared memories, and the many adventures Norway has to offer.

Hotel Brosundet

Hotel Brosundet Alesund, Norway

Ideally-located on the water, Hotel Bosundet has a contemporary and rustic design. A central fireplace and onsite restaurant create a particularly welcoming and cozy communal space.

After breakfast, you are free to depart at your leisure. The airport is a short taxi ride from our hotel.

Please note that this is a typical itinerary, and actual activities may vary due to weather conditions, local events, and to allow serendipity to play a hand in your experience. Summer in Norway brings long days full of sunshine and warmer temperatures. You are unlikely to have sunshine every day, but it is also unlikely for it to be cloudy for long. June, July, and August see 18-20 hours of daylight. The following are average temperatures in the fjord regions of Norway during the summer months.

High: 57 Low: 49

High: 62 Low: 53

High: 63 Low: 50

High: 64 Low: 53

Summer in Norway is short, and the best weather for hiking and outdoor pursuits is generally from June through August. Landscapes of lush greens, ripe fruits, and wildflowers peak this time of year. While it is often bright and sunny, cool and/or wet weather is possible any time of year, and the weather can change quickly in the mountains and on the coast.

Norwegians love fish — smoked, grilled, fried, salted, cured, poached, pickled. Menus for most meals will have fish options. In addition, you will find a variety of meat dishes, soups, root vegetables, and salads for lunches and dinners. Breakfasts offer breads, cheeses, yogurts, muesli, and yes, more fish. It is common even for small hotels to offer meals buffet-style, as this allows travelers to try traditional local dishes alongside more familiar fare. Simply put, Norwegian cuisine is hearty and fresh. Please inform us of any specific dietary restrictions, and we will do our best to accommodate you. Please call our office with any questions or concerns about our ability to meet your needs.

What people love about norwegian fjords tours.

Active and rewarding trip.
Just finished our tour. Everything went smoothly and the staff at Tour Radar were quick to respond when I had a question while traveling. The hotel rooms in Oslo and Bergen were a bit small. I would recommend the upgrade but the locations and breakfasts in both were excellent. Our favorite hotel, by far, was the Kivnes in Balestrand. Just beautiful and right on the fiord. Thank you Tour Radar!

The magical fjords of Norway

Your breath will leap right off the edge of those steep, steep cliffs

  • Newsletter sign up Newsletter

The Trolltunga rock formation affords gorgeous views of Ringedalsvatnet Lake in Norway

The fjords of Norway — all 1,000 of them — are majestic. That is the simplest, most straightforward way to put it. The long, narrow sea inlets are surrounded by dramatically steep cliffs, often best viewed from the water while gliding by on a ferry or kayak. Fjords can be found in all corners of the country, but to see some of the most stunning examples, visit the western part of the nation, known as Fjord Norway.

Geirangerfjord

The Geirangerfjord in Norway with snowcapped mountains in the distance

Geirangerfjord is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with Naeroyfjord

All you have to do is see a photo of Geirangerfjord to understand why this is among the most visited spots in Norway. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the natural wonder "inspires with its deep, blue water ringed by sky-grazing snow-capped peaks, gushing waterfalls and green vegetation,"  Travel + Leisure  said. For spectacular views, take a ferry ride past the Seven Sisters and Suitor waterfalls and drive up the windy road to Mt. Dalsnibba. There, you will find the  Geiranger Skywalk , where visitors can take in unobstructed views of the fjord.

Hardangerfjord

An aerial view showing the powerful Voringfossen Waterfall cascading down a mountainside in Norway

Norway's most visited waterfall is the Voringfossen

Often referred to as the Kingdom of Waterfalls, Hardangerfjord is home to Norway's crown jewel, the mighty  Voringsfossen . This is the country's most famous waterfall, and after witnessing its power, be sure to also visit Steinsdalsfossen, where you can walk on a pathway behind the water, and  Latefossen , a twin waterfall that plunges toward an old stone bridge. Hardangerfjord has another claim to fame: apples. Orchards thrive here because of the region's comparatively mild winters, and visitors can stop by farms on the  Fruit and Cider Route  in Ulvik to pick up produce, juice and ciders.

Tourists stand on Preikestolen to see Lysefjord

Hundreds of thousands of people visit Preikestolen every year

Lysefjord is a playground for mountain hikers. Opportunities abound, from the strenuous climb up to Kjerag, the highest peak in Lysefjord, to the popular trek to  Preikestolen  (The Pulpit Rock). From here, you can gaze down at the Lysefjord below, a view made even more special when hiking in for sunrise. If that is not enough to get your heart pumping, take a ferry to the village of  Florli  and ascend the world's longest wooden stairway — a 4,444 step journey up a mountain. There is also a wood-fired hot tub, filled with fresh fjord water, in Florli that visitors  can rent .

Naeroyfjord

A ferry going through the water in Naeroyfjord

Ferries have to carefully maneuver through the narrow Naeroyfjord

Another UNESCO World Heritage Site, Naeroyfjord is often included in the "Norway in a Nutshell" itinerary for travelers on a time crunch who want to see as many fjords as possible. This narrow fjord — at some points, it is only about 820 feet wide —  can be traversed on electric boats, which stop at some of the tiny villages that dot the landscape. Bakka is one of those remote communities, where visitors often become enchanted by the serene views and historic wooden buildings. The centerpiece is the  Bakka Church , built in 1859 and still hosting services during the summer.

A green meadow next to water in Sognefjord

Sognefjord is 120 miles long and about one mile deep

As the longest and deepest fjord in Norway, Sognefjord reigns supreme. Known as The King of the Fjords, it has several side branches (like Naeroyfjord) and is home to more than 19 tiny, charming villages. Sognefjord "offers Norway's best combination of scenic wonder and accessibility," legendary travel writer  Rick Steves  said, and is in a "relative sun belt, with only two feet of rain a year." Hikers should plan to spend a day or two in the Aurlandsdalen Valley, a scenic region often described as Norway's answer to the Grand Canyon. For a quick side trip, visit Fjaerland on Fjaerlandsfjord. This is a  book town , where tomes can be encountered or purchased everywhere from banks to bus stops.

Exploring the Fjords of Norway: A Naturalist's Dream

A h, the fjords of Norway-those deep, meandering inlets carved by ancient glaciers that leave every visitor in awe. If you're a nature lover, an adventure junkie, or just someone who appreciates breathtaking scenery, planning a trip to explore these geological wonders might just be your perfect getaway. However, before you add the fjords to your bucket-list, there are a few things that you should be aware of first. Here's everything you need to know to make the most out of your visit.

The Majesty of the Fjords

First, let's take a closer look at what the Norwegian fjords actually are. Imagine sailing through waters that are a deep shade of blue, flanked by immense cliffs that rise almost vertically from the water's edge. This is the landscape that we're talking about here. Shaped by ice ages, where glaciers slowly carved out deep valleys that later filled with seawater. Two of the most notable examples are the Sognefjord-the longest and deepest fjord in Norway-and the Geirangerfjord, known for its dramatic waterfalls and pristine surroundings. However, these two are just the tip of the iceberg (pun intended!).

A Haven for Wildlife

It's not just the landscape that makes this place so magical. It's also the exceptionally diverse wildlife ! Depending on where you are, you might spot otters playing along the shores, or seals lounging on rocks. The waters are rich with marine life-perfect for a bit of fishing or bird watching, as the cliffs provide nesting grounds for birds such as puffins and eagles. Every turn and every season brings something new for wildlife enthusiasts to discover.

The fjord’s lush surroundings are characterized by dense forests of pine and birch, interspersed with patches of Arctic tundra . These forests are not only absolutely beautiful to look at and walk in, but are home to an array of smaller fauna such as squirrels, hares, and a variety of birds. The ground layer is rich with mosses, lichens, and wild berries, including cloudberries, bilberries, and lingonberries. So depending on the season that you're visiting, you could experience something different each time. Which is the perfect excuse to visit the Norwegian fjords more than once!

Active Adventures

Now that you know what you can expect to see in the Norwegian fjords, let's explore everything that you will be able to do! To sum things up - pretty much anything. Because this is the perfect destination for any type of traveler. From the ones who enjoy slow vacation days filled with leisurely walks, to the ones who prefer to get their heart rate up and boost their adrenaline levels.

The fjords offer some of the world’s most picturesque hiking spots, no matter where your activity levels are at. Trails range from easy walks to challenging treks, like the famous Trolltunga or the more accessible Romsdalseggen. Kayaking along the fjord's calm waters is another way to get up close and personal with the stunning surroundings. And let's not forget winter sports-come snowfall, the region is perfect for skiing, snowshoeing, and more.

The fjords are rich in marine life, making fishing another popular activity. You can fish from the shore or head out on a guided fishing trip to deeper waters. Common catches include cod, pollock, and mackerel. For those who prefer a more relaxed way to see the fjords, a fjord cruise is an excellent option. These cruises can vary in length from a few hours to several days, depending on your interests and budget. And finally, don't forget your camera! Because even amateur photographers will be able to shoot spectacular photos here!

Hjørundfjord day 1, kayaking

Day 1: Start your journey and kayak to a roadless village

Get ready for an unforgettable Norwegian fjords kayaking and hiking tour. Meet your guide and the rest of the group at Urke Kaihus. Pack your kayak, then after instructions and a safety demonstration, paddle the first leg out into the Norangsfjord. Stop for a lunch break near the small harbour of Leknes, then turn into the Hjørundfjord and enjoy the afternoon paddling to Trandal, a roadless village only reachable by boat. Stay on a farm with the most amazing views over the fjord and the jagged peaks of the Sunnmøre Alps in the background.

Hike along the Hjørundfjord

Day 2: Hike to a waterfall and enjoy the view of the fjord from above

After breakfast, leave the farm and paddle into the fjord towards Sæbø. When you come on shore for a lunch break, you’ll see a small shop (the only one on this trip!) a great opportunity to   stock up on your favourite Norwegian snacks. After lunch, continue towards another roadless place, a village with two farms. Stay in one of the farm houses. Check in and enjoy your dinner. This is a great place for relaxing by the campfire down by the fjord, or a chance to make use of the lingering daylight with a walk to the waterfalls higher up the valley.

Hjørundfjord day 3, hike to waterfall

Day 3: Explore the most impressive part of the Hjørundfjord

Today, paddle perhaps the most impressive stretch into the fjord to Bjørke. The fjord’s many twists and turns make this stretch all the more dramatic and impressive. On the way, land on a little peninsula near Utåløyra for lunch, then pass by Viddal and Finnes before you land in Bjørke and stay in a local house for two nights. This sleepy little town has some beautiful historic boathouses.  If the weather’s nice, we can have an outside dinner with fjordview.

Day 4, kayaking to Bjørke

Day 4: Hike into the Sunnmøre Alps

After a relaxed breakfast (we do not need to check out) we start hiking from the house through the village of Bjørke and up into the mountains. Først through the forest and later above the treeline in an alpine mountain area. You will have great views all the way up. Our goal for today is the Tysselake at 600m elevation above the fjord. The total hike will be around 15 km and will take a whole day. The guide might decide to go on another hike than the one described above based on the weather, fitness level, or local circumstances, but anyhow fjord views are guaranteed. It will be great to cool down with a swim in the fjord after a hike like this. You will spend the night at the same place.

Hjørundfjord day 5, kayaking back to Urke

Day 5: Paddle the final stretch back to Urke

Paddle along the other side of the Hjørundfjord back to Urke. A typical lunch spot today is Viddal. This is partially the same stretch as yesterday but it is interesting to experience how different the views are while paddling in the opposite direction. Arriving at the Urke Kaihus around 16.00 (4 pm), raise a glass with your group, and toast with a hearty “Skål!” to the end of this unforgettable experience.

Note that this itinerary might be done the other way around on some of the departure dates due to availability of the accommodation.

One word: Amazing! I went kayaking and 1 day hiking with a nice small group of people from over the world. It was like diving in the heaven of Norway in an intercultural and local way. Feeling the nature, adventure to discover, wildlife (salmons, eagles, folfins) around, over the salty water, under the ever light sun, in the windy fjords, fire for fresh fish food. Thank you for the fun and never expected experience. Thank you Rogier and Anne for the perfect organization to make this happen. I will be back soon!

How to Visit Oslo, According to Someone Who Spent 6 Years in Scandinavia

Oslo, Norway, is a year-round destination — with saunas, fjord cruises, and fascinating museums.

Best Hotels and Resorts

Best things to do, best restaurants, best time to visit, how to get there, best neighborhoods.

Christopher Larson/Travel + Leisure

The mere idea of a summer day in a place like Oslo — home to subzero waters and black-metal music — might seem like a mirage. But the summers here are famously light and hot, with the Norwegian capital being an ideal playground for sunbathing, swimming, fishing, and hiking, replacing the darker months’ skiing, ice bathing, and roaring fireplaces.

Beyond its outdoor pursuits, Oslo 's eco-conscious efforts exceed most cities. In 2016, it introduced a “climate budget” with a goal of reducing emissions by 95 percent by 2030; two years later, 1,000 trees were planted for the Future Library project ; and in 2019, the city was crowned the European Green Capital .

Oslo’s young professionals and creatives may scatter themselves among the hip, diverse neighborhoods of Grünerløkka and Tøyen, or the more upscale Frogner and St. Hanshaugen (picture Parisian-like facades and tree-lined streets with mansions), but the main thing this city’s dwellers have in common is their commitment to time spent in nature. Visitors will find eco-friendly hotels committed to eliminating waste and championing reusable materials, restaurants that support third-world communities, and spas and saunas dispersed between the city’s central harbor and the dense surrounding forest.

At a time when travelers are becoming aware of how their leisure choices impact the environment, it’s interesting to see Oslo’s dedication to learning about and introducing the bigger ideas behind eco work. September’s Oslo Innovation Week, for example, is largely digital, with the aim of solving real global challenges through entrepreneurship, innovation, and green tech — the subjects of its panels include energy, circular economy, and life-science investment. For anyone interested in such, its panels and events make it a good time to visit.

For me, having spent six years in Scandinavia, and long summers and winters in Norway , Oslo became a base for months at a time. Most favor Danish and Swedish coastal cities for their accessibility. Like any capital, the Norwegian city is fast-changing and home to global diasporas that help shape the identity of this fjord-laden delight.

Top 5 Can’t Miss

  • Any trip to Oslo calls for a bracing ice dip and sauna session.
  • History buffs might note the elaborate original fixtures of Sommerro, a former electricity factory
  • Restaurant Alex is the newest place to see and be seen, yet it's ultra-welcoming.
  • Marvel at Vigeland, a park displaying nude sculptures.
  • Go cross-country skiing or hiking, or simply enjoy the view from the top, at Nordmarka.

Francisco Nogueira

Not long after Sommerro's fall 2022 opening, the hotel and spa made its way on Travel + Leisure' s list of the 100 best new hotels in the world . Its electricity factory history is felt while the mid-century interior design and moody lighting offer a polished feel. The 231 rooms of various sizes include annexes, sloped ceilings, and exquisite upholstery, plus top-tier amenities and service. Don't miss the newly opened Izakaya, which serves a Nordic-Japanese menu.

Villa Inkognito

The next-door sibling property of Sommerro, Villa Inkognito is housed in a former private residence dating back to 1870. It was transformed into offices for the city’s first electrical company, and later served as the Algerian embassy. The 11-room retreat is also available on a full buyout basis for an ultra-special trip, and each room is meant to feel like a home away from home.

Amerikalinjen

This revved-up former Norwegian America Line headquarters toots its own stylish horn. The cheery staff resurrects the bustling energy of the storied spot , which is decked out in snappy tailoring from Norwegian fashion favorite Holzweiler. Guests can also expect a chic library, original elevators, and ceiling stuccos that remain across the rooms.

The Well Spa & Hotel

The Well Spa & Hotel provides a holistic approach to health — meaning uniform bathing suits and gowns, a zero-digital policy in restaurants and communal areas, excellent menus, relaxing treatments, and a decidedly tranquil feel in the stunning sculpture garden. Located in Sofiemyr, about 20 minutes from Oslo's city center via its own shuttle, the impressively vast property makes for a divine solo sojourn or a social spa trip.

Clarion Hotel The Hub

Located close to Oslo Central Station, Clarion Hotel The Hub stands out with its magnificent lobby showcasing marble features, a sumptuous bar, and refurbished rooms.

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

With rugged natural terrain skirting the entire city, it’s no wonder most extra-curricular activities here revolve around getting outdoors. A winding, 20-minute tram ride up Nordmarka takes visitors to the place where the trees for Future Library are planted. Take the lift to ski jump Holmenkollen, then stop by Holmenkollen Restaurant for tartare, a hot toddy, and mountaintop views.

Sauna and Swim

In the winter, the adrenaline rush is rewarding, and come summer, the waters are refreshing. At Badstuforening , it's $25 for a two-hour communal seat; enjoy the peaceful camaraderie (and views) of this sweet setup. Just make sure to bring a towel. Alternatively, try Salt , a sauna and art space that's set opposite the Snøhetta-designed opera house and hosts concerts, plays, and exhibitions.

Museum Hopping

Explore the intricate history of explorer life at the Fram , which contains the reconstructed remnants of the ship that raced to the South Pole, headed by Norwegian adventurer Roald Amundsen. In the center of town, check out the Nobel Peace Center for its permanent and roving collections of significant human rights accomplishments. An unsung gem is the Emanuel Vigeland Museum , complete with frescoes and gong bath concerts. Tip: Plan in advance planning due to the location's unusual opening hours.

Silent Fjord Cruise

Take a silent electric fjord tour on the Brim Explorer , with multiple options to suit your mood. There’s yoga on the deck, an elegant brunch, or a dinner cruise. Other perks of this slick and small liner include less crowds and an intimate setting for your crew.

Courtesy of Restaurant Alex

Restaurant Alex

An overnight success with everyone from students to billionaires, this restaurant calls for advance reservations. Emerging chef Alexandra Ek guides a well-priced brasserie-style menu, while the resident DJs don’t frown upon dancing on tables after hours.

Sabi Omakase

Japanese cuisine this far from East Asia has a terrific head start thanks to the abundance of cold sea. At Sabi Omakase , guests can expect a carefully composed seasonal menu that's served in a harmonious, low-lit space. Interestingly, the chef used to be a surgeon — the locale and its offerings are not remiss of precision, and, yes, you’re safe in his hands.

Solsiden Restaurant

Solsiden is a fail-safe institution for seafood on the water, dapper and light-filled with its glass structure. Put on a pretty dress or shirt and enjoy the harbor breeze at this summer-only restaurant. Order the renowned shellfish tower and the Champagne.

It’s no secret Norway can whip the wallet. This fresh and lovely Asian noodle joint is a way of preserving splurges for another day while still giving you the opportunity to eat well. Plus, every purchase feeds a child in Africa, where founder André Evju spent lots of time.

Plant-filled with kitschy white tiles and pink lighting, Njokobok offers Senegal-style community dining. Order the jollof rice, grilled dorada, or whole lamb and indulge in the location's famous onion sauce three ways. Oslo has a sizable African diaspora, so you'll find good Ethiopian, Eritrean, Moroccan, and Somali restaurants throughout the city.

Christopher Larson/Travel + Leisure

While winter is for snow and snuggles, summer in Oslo is all about swimming and seafood.

Spring (or shoulder season), meanwhile, is ideal for soaking up art, history, opera, and the boutique shops. June through September sees music festivals such as By:Larm and Øya , and winter is prime time for ski tournaments, cozying up in a cabin, and cold-weather rituals like ice bathing and relaxing in a sauna.

The main thing to consider is winter's darkness — there are nearly 20 hours under cover, compared to summer’s two-hour nights.

Flying into Gardermoen is ideal for easy access into the city — it's about 20 minutes via speed train. Arriving at another airport means a long bus ride to the city, so don't be duped by the cheaper inter-European flights to Torp Sandefjord Airport. Another way to arrive is by cruise — check out eco operators such as Hurtigruten. You might also consider the spectacular, nearly eight-hour, cross-country Bergen Line route — often dubbed one of the most beautiful train rides in the world. If you're arriving from elsewhere in the country, domestic airline Widerøe is a great option.

Andrea Pistolesi/Getty Images

This east-of-central pocket is having a resurgence, thanks to the introduction of some trendy bars and restaurants, but its leafy, suburban feel is enduring. In addition to its waterside location, there are gorgeous local bistros, Frogner Church, grand foreign embassies, and lots of indie cinemas here. Plus, you're still a stone's throw from the theaters, palace, Litteraturhuset (House of Literature), and Vigelandsparken (Vigeland sculpture park).

The peninsula of Bygdøy has not only amassed some of the capital’s best museums and relics, but it’s also home to idyllic beaches — Huk, Paradisbukta, and Bygdøy Sjøbad — for swimming and picnicking. For something a bit more cultural, browse the collections at the Fram, Norwegian Maritime Museum, Oscarshall, or Norwegian Museum of Cultural History. The Gol Stave church is also a must-see.

Day Trip to Drøbak

The wider area of Oslofjord is full of small towns, and picturesque-as-they-come Drøbak is a wonderful jaunt for the day. Just a 40-minute drive (or 90-minute scenic ferry ride) outside of Oslo, Drøbak is home to the dramatic Oscarsborg Fortress , great shellfish in cute old buildings, a summertime opera, and even a quirky year-round Christmas shop.

How to Get Around

Once you arrive in Oslo via the Flytoget airport transfer, walking is doable and preferable to most. An Oslo Pass is handy for riding the tram, train, bus, and ferry. E-scooters can be less arduous than biking if you need to dash somewhere, but locals prefer a more relaxed and measured approach to getting around.

Norway Road Trip – The Ultimate 2 Week Travel Itinerary

This post is also available in: Nederlands

Are you currently trying to plan the perfect Norway road trip itinerary? No need to look any further! Cause if you love spending time outdoors then this is the perfect Norway road trip for you!

From discovering the Norwegian fjords, exploring the most beautiful National Parks, searching for wildlife and getting soaked next to waterfalls. This Norway road trip itinerary is for those who love to explore the more of the beaten path places.

In my opinion, t’s the perfect combination of the more popular touristic places and some true hidden gems that took a lot of planning and searching to find.

Get ready to discover some of the most beautiful places in Norway and the most beautiful hiking trails in Norway .

norway fjord hiking tours

Transportation for this Norway itinerary

We made our road trip through Norway with a camper and I would do it again. We chose a camper from  WeCamp  and really loved it! It was very spacious and comfortable and it really felt like our home away from home for these 2 weeks.

norway fjord hiking tours

A self-drive trip through Norway is   the best way to see all the beautiful places this Scandinavian country has to offer   . And no, public transport is really not an option for this itinerary. Then you really have to limit yourself to visiting the cities in Norway.

Do you want to explore Norwegian nature? Then you should rent a car or camper!

Fortunately, driving in Norway is   a great experience  ! And it is also the most budget-friendly way to discover the country. Not only because public transport in Norway is expensive, but also because you can reach the more remote places where you can normally find cheaper accommodation.

By renting a car or camper,   you actually save on transportation AND accommodation   .

Another big plus? You can literally look for good weather! Halfway through our trip we turned our route a bit upside down as there would be 4 days of sunshine so it would be perfect for walking! This is something you cannot do if you book all your hotels in advance. During these types of trips I don’t think accommodation is that important. If there is a hot shower, I am happy.

💡  TIP  – In Norway there are toll roads or you sometimes have to take a ferry. Your  WeCamp  camper is equipped with a barcode and these additional costs will be settled after returning your camper at the end of the trip.

norway fjord hiking tours

The start and end point of your trip through Norway

Norway is a really big country and it is practically impossible to explore both the south and the north in 2 weeks.

For our first tour through this beautiful country, we chose to focus mainly on the West Fjords and the most beautiful places in the lower half of the country.

So we started in Oslo, where after a smooth direct flight from Brussels we immediately traveled to  WeCamp  to pick up our camper.

If you want to dive into the city first, you can do so very easily because from Oslo Airport you can reach Oslo city center    in 20 minutes with the Flytoget Airport Express train  .

Our tour through Norway is a big loop that also ends in Oslo.

How many days do you need for this Norway itinerary?

Do you want to follow this itinerary completely? Then you should allow at least 14 days for this and a few extra days certainly can’t hurt. Do you have less time to explore this region of Norway? No problem! Then you will simply have to skip some places such as the Sunmøre Alps and Dovrefjell National Park.

Below you can find our exact itinerary with a lot of explanation about each region we visited, the most beautiful places you can visit and the average travel time from region to region. Oh and to top it all off, I have also added some tips for beautiful places you can encounter along the way!

norway fjord hiking tours

LYSEFJORD (2 DAYS)

Depending on what time you arrive in Oslo, you can already pick up your camper at  WeCamp  , do some shopping and start your drive towards the Lysefjord. This is suddenly also the longest travel time of this route with no less than 603km on the counter! We therefore decided to just drive as far as our fatigue would allow us on the first evening. After about 6 hours of driving we decided to use one of the parking lots next to the highway. You won’t find a shower here, but you will find a public toilet!

The next day we first visited the beautiful  Månafossen  waterfall , before driving to the beautiful Lysefjord. The hike to  Preikestolen  is one of the most popular hikes in all of Norway. The walk is about 7.8 km in total and takes you to the 600 meter high cliff where a breathtaking view over the Lysefjord awaits you. You can camp at  Preikestolen camping AS  .

💡  TIP  – If you want to spend the night here, it is best to try to get your place as early in the day as possible. Checkout is from 11 am and from then on it is always possible to reserve your place.

Travel time  – 8.5 hours including a short stop at the waterfall.

norway fjord hiking tours

HARDANGERVIDDA (2 DAYS)

The region around the Hardangervidda National Park is one of the most beautiful in southern Norway. Best known of course for the spectacular walk to the Trolltunga  . You walk above the   Hardangerfjord  and the total walking time is 20km or 28km, depending on your starting point.

But there are also some beautiful stops nearby that you should definitely not miss! How about the  Låtefossen  and  Furebergfossen  , two waterfalls that you can admire in all their glory just next to the road. Don’t forget to visit the beautiful  Bondhusdalen  Lake . For the latter you should allow approximately 2 hours for your visit, unless the weather is beautiful and you can also swim. So be sure to wear your swimsuit under your clothes on a sunny day!

The evening before you walk to Trolltunga it is best to stay at the  Trolltunga Camping    , which is just a 10-minute drive from P1 Tyssedal. Another option is the  Ringøy Gard Camping  , a 45-minute drive from the P1 Tyssedal, but here you camp next to the water with a view of the Hardangerfjord.

Travel time  – It is about a 7.5 hour drive from the Lysefjord to the Hardangervidda National Park

norway fjord hiking tours

JOTUNHEIMEN (3 DAYS)

Jotunheimen National Park was one of the biggest surprises of our trip! This beautiful region in the south of Norway is absolutely unique and the road there is absolutely fantastic. Along the way you will pass the impressive  Vøringfossen  , one of the highest waterfalls in Norway with a free fall of about 182 meters. The water literally crashes into the deep and you can safely admire this spectacle from the steel stairs and viewpoints. Along the way you will also pass Rjukandefoss, an idyllic waterfall that you can easily admire via a short forest path.

In Jotunheimen there is the  Besseggen Ridge Hike  . This 14.5km walk starts in Memurubu and ends in Gjendesheim. But to reach Memurubu you first have to take a ferry from Gjendesheim. This walk is described by the Norwegians themselves as one of the must-do hikes in Norway.

If you do not have 14 days to explore Norway, it is best to continue towards Åndalsnes, but otherwise you have an extra day here to also  explore the  Knutshøe  . This 13.2km walk takes you over the ridge of the Knutshøe and I thought it was certainly just as spectacular as the Besseggen.

You can stay at the    Besseggen Fjellpark AS  , which is located near the start of both walks.

Travel time  – 7 hours including all stops until you arrive at Jotunheimen National Park.

norway fjord hiking tours

DOVREFJELL NATIONAL PARK (1 DAY)

Dovrefjell national park  was one of the absolute highlights of our tour through Norway and actually a last minute decision. The weather gods had predicted rain again, so we decided to postpone our slightly more difficult walks for a day and look for the mystical musk ox! This is the only place in Norway, and one of the few places in the world, where you can see the majestic musk ox. The musk ox is one of the oldest mammals on our planet. Dating back to 187,000 to 129,000 years ago, musk oxen are known as    the rugged survivors of the Ice Age  .

💡  TIP  – When photographing wild animals, be careful to keep a safe distance and not to disturb them in their wild habitat. So it is best to use a camera with a good zoom lens for this.

After your visit to Dovrefjell you drive towards Åndalsnes, but before you arrive here you drive past the beautiful valley of  Innerdalen  . Also praised as one of the most beautiful valleys in Norway and very easy to reach, don’t miss a short but steep walk of 7km in total.

Travel time  – 2.5 hours to get from Jotunheimen to Dovrefjell  and then another 1 hour drive to Innerdalen.  We chose to drive to Åndalsnes that same evening so that we could start our walk early the next day. Doing this will add another 2.5 hours of driving.

norway fjord hiking tours

ANDALSNES (3 DAYS)

The   Romsdalseggen Ridge Hike  in Åndalsnes is one of the most impressive hiking trails in all of Norway! For this walk you will definitely need a whole day and you will have to take the  Romsdalseggen bus  that takes you to Vengedalen. Then you climb up and walk over the Romsdalseggen ridge back to Åndalsnes.

The   Trollstigenweg  is one of the most famous mountain roads in Norway and takes you to the beautiful  Trollstigen  viewpoint. The walk to  Stabbeskaret  also starts here, where you can literally sit on top of the troll wall.

💡  TIP  – One of the most spectacular scenes from Mission Impossible with Tom Cruise was also filmed here. Yes, that scene where he rides his motorcycle off a cliff.

End the day with a walk of less than a kilometer to  Litlefjellet  , one of the best places to admire the sunset over the Romsdal valley.

The area around Åndalsnes is filled with beautiful campsites and we had the pleasure of staying at two of them! We stayed at the    Åndalsnes Camping & Motell    and the    Trollveggen Camping   . Of these two, Trollveggen Camping is definitely the most beautiful! Here you camp right next to the impressive Troll Wall. And yes, we saw our campsite all the way down in the valley when we reached the Stabbeskaret viewpoint!

Another camping option is    Trollstigen Camping en Gjestegård   , which is just a 15-minute drive from the bus station in Åndalsnes and has been voted one of the best and most beautiful campsites in all of Norway. Unfortunately, I only found out about it after our visit to the area.

Travel time  – 2 hours to visit all the different places in Åndalsnes during these days .

SUNMØRE ALPS (1 DAY)

The Sunmøre Alps are still relatively unknown to the general public and one of the most beautiful views of this region is from the top of Saksa Mountain . This 6km walk is short but very challenging because it climbs very steeply. I literally huffed and puffed my way to the top, but the 360° view you get in return is completely worth it! Be sure to visit the  Christian Gaard  restaurant on this day . After all that camping, going out for a nice meal is even more fun and you will also find one of the most idyllic swings in Norway here.

You can camp at the  Urke Camping  , near the start of the walk to Saksa.

Travel time  – 4 hours to get from Åndalsnes to Urke

GEIRANGER (1 DAY)

Geiranger  is undoubtedly one of the most visited fjords in Norway. However, we were a little less impressed, mainly because it felt very touristy. Where in other places you can easily venture into the wide nature, this is not the case here and you are practically obliged to book a cruise. We therefore decided not to stay here very long and drove on to  Loen  . Loen is a beautiful town in the municipality of Stryn with crystal clear water as far as the eye can see. When the weather is nice you can go kayaking on Lake Lovatnet or take the cable car up in Loen for a fantastic view.

Travel time  – 2.5 hours drive to get from Urke first to Geiranger and then to Loen. From Loen it is about a 6-hour drive to Oslo. Depending on your timing, you can choose to drive back a bit today so that you can take it easy on the last day.
