Travellers Inn

Ratings and reviews, food and ambience, location and contact.

I have visited this pub for drinks many times over the years but not for a long time. Having recently seen the pub's social media feed following the relaxation of the recent Covid lockdown, I decided it would be a good place for only my... second indoor pub meal since the crisis began. This proved to be good choice. The decor was much more airy and fresh than I remember. The staff were extremely friendly and welcoming and had a good understanding of the Covid Safe guidelines. I ordered a pint of local Brown Cow ale from the local Bradfield Brewery which was well kept. I was tempted by the All Day Breakfast at £11.50 which was very hearty and filling. Everything was nicely cooked and presented. It is great that a traditional rural local like this still exists. So many similar places are turned into private residences or else get taken over by the national chains, get expanded and lose their character. I will try to visit this pub again in the near future. This weekend was the first time that my wife and I have been out for a meal since the lock-down. Our daughter and her boyfriend booked us a surprise family meal at The Travellers Inn Oxspring. The pub had organised a family day, to celebrate... a belated "Mother & Fathers Day". After shielding for so long we were a little apprehensive, but the landlords had excellent safe-guarding in place. Needless to say the food was first rate, and the gift of a home crafted miniature Gin & Whiskey was a nice parting gift. Staff were very helpful and polite, we felt as though we were out with an extended family as everyone was so friendly. Highly recommend a visit and a meal. Remember to book in advance to avoid disappointment. More

A couple of weeks ago Ruth from the Travellers popped a flyer through our door saying that they were doing takeaway meals during the second lockdown. Knowing how good Ruth's cooking or cheffing skills are we thought we would give it a try. we rang... up earlier this week and spoke to Jack, placed our order, he said when you arrive sit in your car by the door and your meals will be ready on time. and guess what, at 6.15 pm, parked near the door and our meal came out spot on time - thank you. Gina had Chicken Tikka and rice. I had Spicy Spanish Beef Stew. both meal were excellent and to cap it all we had a 2 pint carton of Belgium Blue beer. Thank you very much Ruth, Jack and the team. See you soon and keep smiling. Peter & Gina. More

Well, it takes a lot for me to leave a bad review, but after tonight’s awful experience I feel new customers should be aware before entering this establishment, not only for the lack of quality fresh food, but the disgusting attitude of the landlady. We... both ordered creamy garlic mushrooms that were basically mushrooms in condensed soup with a some garlic added to try and fob these off as creamy garlic mushrooms, we were asked if they were ok and we felt these were not even edible to eat as we don’t usually complain, we said this quietly and in a nice manner and the waiter said no problem and took them off the bill. We then weren’t very hopeful that the main course would be any better which sadly it wasn’t, the stew looked anaemic and was tasteless and I could not even chew a piece of the meat, this was served in a large frozen Yorkshire pudding with lumpy mashed potato, which was also tasteless, the girl then came up to ask if everything was ok with the main course and I said not really but left it at that and then within seconds the landlady appeared raising her voice telling us to leave if we were not happy, this is no way to treat customers when they have a genuine complaint, we then decided to leave after being talked to in this manner, as we were walking out the landlord asked what the problem was and we explained nicely and quietly for the landlady to then start again in front of all the other customers, this is no way to run a business and treat new customers who will never return even for a drink due to her despicable attitude, isn’t even worthy of 1 star to be honest, never met such a vile woman with a attitude like this in all the years of eating out. More

It is exceedingly infrequent - in fact in 4 years it is the first and only time we have felt it appropriate to suggest that customers take their business elsewhere - we value every customer who enters our premises and always hope that their experience... More

The burgers were not cooked properly and raw inside I ate half of mine to find it was very pink raw and stone cold. The quality of the burger was very low and commercially bought in like the onions rings and chips. The chips was... very greasy. My overall opinion is that nothing is home made in this establishment. Don't waste your money coming here for a premium meal. Who puts a burger in a tea cake and smothered in too much cheese of a low grade quality too greasy. The attitude of the staff was disgraceful when I was asked to be more specific about the raw meat in the burger. The customer is always right and unfortunately the arrogance of the staff in the establishment will be there downfall. More

Dear Samantha & Jessica - I have already replied to you both on Facebook but it would appear that to give us a nasty review once is not sufficient for you and you wish to be even more unpleasant this time around so I am... More

My husband and I had visited the Travellers previously on two occasions. The first time my husband had had the beef pie and I had had Lasagna. The beef pie had been ok and my lasagna acceptable. The second time we visited I had one... of my favourite dishes, Chicken Caesar Salad. Part way through the meal, I thought I was going to vomit, I ate some salad which tasted like eating earth. When I looked further at my plate there was quite a large amount of mud in the salad. We complained to the waitress, and was told that the salad was brought in and was just put on the plate as it was as it was supposed to have been pre-prepared. Whoever had prepared the plate had not watched what they were doing as it would have been almost impossible to miss. there was so much. The Travellers refunded the payment and offered me something else but the thought of eating something else there for me was not an option. Today, we decided to give the Travellers a second chance as it was one of the few places were we could eat outside, but still be under cover, and still be able to take our dog with us. We were initially very disappointed to hear that the menu had changed and the Inn was no longer serving main meals outside. They eventually stated that we could order the pie and lasagna but that this would be a one-off. We waited, as they had explained, for about 30 minutes for our meal to be FRESHLY COOKED but, under the circumstances, this was not a problem. When our meal came, however, we wished we hadn't bothered, there was something soft in the middle of the Lasagna which I think was supposed to be white sauce, there was very little mince, the layer of cheese on the top was a cheap and nasty english version and to top it all it was cold. The consistency of the sauce and the fact that it was cold, lead me to believe that it had been frozen and just warmed through. It was definitely not value for money for a few sheets of pasta at £14.95, even though it came with garlic bread and salad, which of course I did not order after my previous experience. As much as I tried to eat the Lasagna I couldn't; it made me feel pretty sick. My husband had ordered pie and mushy peas. The peas were a solid mass on the plate and were inedible. My husband complained to the waitress but she wouldn't come out to inspect the food. Instead a lady believed to be the Manager, came out to see us and apologied, taking the plates away and returning our money. Unfortunately returning the money did not help the fact that it was, by this time, too late in the afternoon to go somewhere else to eat. Being prepared to refund the cost is ok but does not alter the fact the customers are seemingly regularly being served inedible food and being told that they are short staffed should not be given as a reason or excuse. More

As the landlord and landlady of this establishment we have taken the decision not to reply to each part of your review regarding the food but instead to make one or two overall comments. We were not at the premises when this happened but have... More

0 stars given- hands down the worst food I’ve ever seen and tasted in my life. I wouldn’t even feed it to my dog!! The first meal was very raw and pink the burger was sent back and they recooked. They couldn’t even manage this... the second meal was actually worse. It was less cooked than the first. The waitresses attitude absolutely stinks and her managers should book her onto a course in customer service. We ended up going to another establishment to actually eat something. This meal was no value for money. The cost and quality of the ingredients very poor. Head in to Penistone centre or one of the many establishments around our local area that actually care about their customers. I have never sent a meal back ever until today. It was totally unacceptable. More

Initial thoughts were very positive. But. Let’s start with the positives. Welcome was cheery, informal and relaxed. The fact they serve Farmers Blonde amongst other well kept cask ales was a bonus. The menu had sufficient variety for most tastes and dietary requirements and one... steak and ale and one steak and Stilton were duly ordered to be eaten in the well kept beer garden. Both pies were very tasty and filling although some of the meat in mine had dried in cooking so was a bit fibrous and tough. I’d still say it was a good pie as the seasoning and taste were spot on. Had there been a check back I would’ve said the chips were bloody awful bordering on inedible unless you’d just left a concentration camp. There’s a saying “Don’t spoil a ship for a haporth of tar,” transposed into a culinary context “Don’t serve yesterday’s recooked frozen chips to save 10p on a £30 lunch.” I appreciate times are hard but when a website suggests the kitchen staff love cooking please don’t let them display this love by cooking poor quality chips repeatedly to near charcoal. I’m sure this was an aberration but don’t let it happen again because the pies were worth coming back for. More

I am glad you liked the pies - on the subject of the chips I would firstly say that we never serve frozen chips unless you ask for French Fries! The potatoes are bought from a local farm and at this time of year the... More

Following the easing of UK lockdown restrictiins I had the pleasure of visiting here once again for a well deserved and much needed treat in a "home from home" enviroment. This evenings experience didnt fail to impress, yet again! Travelling from West Yorkshire it has... always been worth going "the extra mile" to be able to experience and indulge in what I can only describe as a real treat. With a warm welcome and service to die for I had a night to remeber. The quality, presentation and portion sizes were generous and of extremly high quality and well worth every single penny, in fact could command higher premiums for the outstanding quality! The food was served in a timely manner, was warm and full of flavour. The staff are always incredibly helpful and are never far away, ready to serve and deliver a high quality service. I had the pleasure of chatting with the landlord and landlady who are super friendly, professional and always provide a warm and welcoming enviroment. Huge thank you to all the staff who made it such a fabulous experience yet again and never ever fail to deliver what can only be desribed as an outstanding dining experience! I will be back! in fact I made sure I booked again for next week before leaving! More

Thank you so much for taking the time and trouble to give us such a good review

We saw a flier advertising takeaways and promptly ordered Sunday lunch for 3 of us today. We collected the meals at the requested time in a Covid compliant way. What a treat - roast beef and turkey, roast and gorgeous mashed potatoes, 3 veg, beautiful... gravy and all the trimmings. It was delicious. Thank you to the team at The Travellers. More

We were looking to try this for the first time but unfortunately we were sadly disappointed. The pate was bought in and served in large ramekins which clearly showed it wasn’t homemade and not good. The fish cakes, agin commercially made and not quality, and... the burger not appealing at all. The staff seem friendly enough and so we didn’t complain but even the wine wasn’t great. We paid the bill but would not recommend this at all for food or wine. More

I’m absolutely over the moon to have visited here. We have recently moved to the area and this pub is the type of pub everyone wants on their doorstep. A massive, friendly, warm welcome from ever member of staff who passed our table. Drinks are... crisp, cold and regular (staff always asking if you are ready for another when your glass is 2/3 empty!). The food was delicious too. Proper good pub food. The menu has loads of choices and I said how on earth can you make all these different choices. In my mind I thought it can’t all be good?! Do you know what though.... it was! Every option we had! Starters, mains and desserts! Well done team Travellers what a super friendly, lovely pub. More

Thank you for your fantastic review

This was our first visit and won't be the last. The staff are so friendly and helpful. My elderly father wanted steak pie which wasn't on the menu. There was pigeon pie but he didn't want that! When the lady serving us overheard that she... immediately checked with the kitchen and a steak pie was found. That is service!! Everything we had was well cooked and well presented. The servings are generous. The treacle tart was to die for. All in all a very good meal helped by superb service. More

Thank you for your fabulous review - we really appreciate you taking the time to do this for us

1st visit to this pub, turned up without booking. The staff were great really friendly and managed to squeeze us in. The adults had the Sunday lunch which was excellent really enjoyable and generous, kids had sausage, chips and beans which was way above usual... kids meal standard for a pub. It’s rare nowadays that you go to a pub and actually feel welcome and appreciated for your patronage, staff where attentive and helpful and couldn’t do enough for us. More

The takeaway meals are exactly the same as the meals you'd usually get when you eat in. A lot of places their takeaways are lacking but the Travellers were perfect. very generous portion sizes and good quality food. Will be ordering from again , can't... wait to try their takeaway Sunday dinners! More

His fun and lively nature always keeps everyone amused!

The front of house team encompasses a range of ages but each person is selected for their friendly personality and ability to communicate well with all ages including paying special attention to the small furry friends who frequent the pub!

The incentive for the exterior makeover came about after a visiting couple remarked what a pleasant, comfortable, cosy pub this was – but added that people wouldn’t expect this judging from the outside!

That was enough to convince the members of the family-run operation at The Travellers that it was about time to ring the changes. Punch Taverns duly obliged with the facelift.

That was a while ago, and things are now looking much brighter at the inn, a shining beacon in these days of economic recession.

The pub has long been a popular roadhouse stop-off for travellers along the A629, but despite its relative isolation in the dip at the crossroads, it attracts a steady local trade from the village of Oxspring, down in the vale.

Over the years we have called at the inn, often when Town have been playing at Sheffield United or Wednesday, or more recently for a drink and/or bar snack. There is always a warm welcome from mine hosts of 16 years Ron and Sue Speed, chef son Scott, daughter Mel and the locals. The pub is small and intimate, decked out with interesting sporting memorabilia. Food is served on the tables in the bar area, and there is also a small but spacious restaurant extension at the side.

We have noticed that the food choices have been extended and the menu now makes quite impressive reading. Mother/son chef combination Sue and Scott experimented with various foodie theme nights and have now incorporated the most successful elements of these into their expanding regular menu.

Tuesday used to be curry night – now Indian cuisine is prepared every day of the week, with the exception of Sundays, when traditional Sunday lunches with all the trimmings are served up from 12noon to 5.45pm (£6, £8 & £10, 3 courses).

So when we called in on Wednesday last week we plumped for the Indian option. This was despite being more than a little let down by a recent experience with Eastern pub food. I ordered the chef’s special curry at the ‘country inn of character’ and was brought chicken nuggets on sticky, glutinous boiled rice, covered with a brightly coloured, but bland tasting peppery tomato soup sauce and a single, small, soggy, greasy poppadom. I had been warned. (The pub, I must add, was many miles away from these parts.)

But last week, when we tried again and ordered from the Indian section of the Travellers menu, there was a happier outcome.

For starters we ordered Poppadoms and the Pickle Tray (£2.50), Onion Bhajis with Mint Mayonnaise Dip (£2.50), then for my main course I chose the Chicken Madras (Hot) – chunks of marinated chicken in ‘a spicy, concentrated sauce with chilli and cumin’, accompanied by mushroom fried rice and garlic and coriander naan (£6), while Carol went for the Prawn Jalfrezi (Medium), prawns in ‘a rich tomato sauce with paprika and cardamom’, (£6.50).

They made for a splendid start – the poppadoms were large, crisp and tasty and came with an interesting selection of pickles: mild sweet mango and hotter chilli and onion blends. The bhajis were slightly crispy on the outside, smooth and spicy inside and the chilled raita was refreshing.

The main course was served up on large warmed plates. The Madras sauce with the chicken was a welcome drier blend of spices giving it an authentic Indian flavour. It was billed as being ‘hot’, but I found it pleasantly ‘warm’ and it was complemented by the light, fluffy rice, infused with the subtle flavour of the sliced mushrooms. Carol too was impressed by her Jalfrezi. The rich tomato sauce was just to her liking and prawns are a favourite. These, she said, had been well prepared – and what’s more there were lots of them. Both mains helpings were generous, but not over-facing. We did not, however, manage to find room for a sweet.

The starters on the menu also included Vegetable Samosas and the mains curries, priced £6, are Korma (Mild), Tikka Masala (Medium), Balti (Medium), Jalfrezi (Medium), Vindaloo (Hot) and Phaal (Extra Hot!). All these curry sauces are served with a choice of chicken, beef, lamb or prawns (50p extra). All are accompanied with boiled or mushroom rice and garlic and coriander or plain naan.

On the more traditional side the food service at The Travellers features starters including Soup of the Day with a roll and butter (£3); Yorkshire Puddings, with onion gravy (£3.25); Sausage, Bacon and Black Pudding Salad with a balsamic dressing (£3.50); Mushrooms, Bacon, Leek and Potato Rosti, cooked in cream, topped with cheese and grilled (£3.50); the Prawn Cocktail, with brown bread and butter (£4.25); Deep Fried Calamari, served with a lemon wedge (£4.25) and Deep Fried Cheese, with redcurrant jelly and salad garnish (£3.75).

Then there’s the Travellers ‘Sharers’ platter of boneless pork ribs, chicken wings of fire, prawn in filo, breaded mushrooms, spring rolls, onion rings, potato wedges, salad and three dips (£9).

Traditional mains, all served with a choice of chips, warm new potatoes or jacket potato, include Half Roast Chicken with salad (£7.95); Deep Fried Wholetail Scampi, with peas, salad and tartare sauce (£7.25); Gammon Steak, with pineapple, egg, black pudding and peas (£7.25), Homemade Quiche of the Day with salad (£6.25); BBQ Chicken (£7.50) and Beef Lasange, with garlic bread and salad (£7.50).

The Burger Shack serves up the Mega Burger, topped with fried egg and bacon (£7.25); the Club Sandwich, chicken mayonnaise on the bottom and BLT on top (£6.50); the Big Whopper, two ½lb burgers with lettuce, tomato and onion (£12.95) and the Venison Burger, topped with blue cheese (£5.95). The Steak House has the T-bone Steak (£17); the Wicked Mixed Grill (£14) and the Rib-eye (£14). Then there’s the Wednesday Grill Club with any two grills of Gammon Steak, Rib-eye Steak, Half Roast Chicken or Mixed Grill for £15.

The special Kids’ Menu includes a choice of curly fries or chips, peas or beans, apple or orange juice and chocolate bar. Hot drinks and coffee liquers are also served.

The Travellers menu has grown with the inn’s popularity, a measure of which is that it is already fully booked up for dinner on Christmas Day this year – and next! This is not surprising as this is a friendly, fun pub serving up wholesome pub grub – and the price is right.
