Mini review: Trek Circuit Pro bib shorts review

Comfortable lightweight summer choice

justin loretz

The Circuit Pros caught us by surprise. They appear to be fairly run-of-the-mill lightweight bib shorts, but try them on and you feel them come to life.

The thin 200g Lycra makes them a bit delicate but very comfortable, especially in warm weather, even if it is at the expense of being particularly compressive.

The leg grippers hold well and mesh bibs stay put and vent well; the legs themselves are slightly longer than usual, which you’ll either love or hate.

Trek Circuit Women’s Cycling Bib Shorts Review

' src=

Trek’s Circuit Women’s Cycling Bib Shorts are part of a larger move by Trek to do two things:

  • Rebrand at least some apparel from the Bontrager family to the Trek family
  • Increase the amount of recycled material used in their products and the amount of recyclable material in their packaging

While new product lines are interesting and exciting — and the Circuit Women’s Cycling Bib Shorts have a lot to offer, as you’ll read in a moment — the latter point is far more interesting. As Trek itself notes, the apparel industry is an environmental hot mess, as fast fashion often fast-tracks clothes straight to the dump. The clothing lifecycle is very linear from resource extraction, through manufacturing and shipping, consumer purchase, and finally, landfill.

That’s a long-winded way to say that if you care about the environment, being in the business of selling clothing is fraught with existential problems.

So are the Circuit Women’s Cycling Bib Shorts a solution to clothing life cycle woes? No, but they certainly point to a less environmentally devastating trend.

Trek Circuit Women’s Cycling Bib Shorts Specs:

  • bluesign® product and STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® tested
  • Elite inForm Chamois — form-fitting, dual-density pad with optimal balance of performance and comfort
  • Lightweight, breathable fabric balances compression and comfort
  • Low-profile bib straps with shaped mesh allow for easy bathroom breaks without disrobing

What I like: The Elite inForm chamois is comfortable for 1-2 hour rides; the average 6.3 oz of waste reduction per pair holds promise for an increasingly sustainable approach to the future of apparel in the cycling industry

What I’d change: A bit less silicone grip on the legs would improve the ease of getting into and out of the shorts

My call: A solid pair of bibs for two-ish hour rides that have the added bonus of being bluesign® approved seems like something most folks can get [on their] behind.

Trek Circuit Women’s Cycling Bib Short: bluesign® certified

Trek Circuit Women's Bib Shorts

bluesign® is a third party that establishes sustainability standards for the entire value chain, from material suppliers to manufacturers through to brands and retailers. If you’re a consumer looking to make the best choice possible, there’s a lot of  concern about companies greenwashing their environmental or sustainability claims. Or worse, picking and choosing what environmental facts they choose to report. The fact that the Circuit Women’s Cycling Bib Shorts are bluesign® certified should provide consumers with some comfort that Trek’s claims are verifiable.

  • Podcast: Can bike clothing be truly sustainable?

STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX tested

STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® is a global certification standard that sets strict limits on 100 harmful substances like pesticides and heavy metals. It’s an independent third-party process that tests textiles at all stages of production, from raw material to finished product. Consumers can feel confident that not only are they not exposing themselves to harmful substances, but that the people who manufacture the raw material and construct and package the end product are also not being exposed to harmful substances.

Trek Circuit Women’s Cycling Bib Short: The Ride

Trek Circuit Women's Bib Shorts

I’ve been testing the Circuit Women’s Bibs for a month, but we only reached shorts weather about a week ago. So most of that testing has been on the trainer. The Elite inForm chamois is Trek’s mid-level chamois. They recommend it for up to 2.5-hour rides, and I would agree that that is the high end of the chamois’s performance and comfort range. The dual-density padding manages to remain relatively thin and unobtrusive. For trainer rides ranging from 45 minutes to an hour and half, the chamois was fantastic — supportive and comfortable. It also performed well on the single outdoor test it received — a two hour gravel ride. At the end of that ride, I was starting to notice the thinness of the chamois and wanting a bit more support or firmness to the padding, but only just.

The Circuit’s bib straps are wide and thin with mesh on your back for improved cooling. The width distributes any pressure and they lay nicely under a jersey. The front of the shorts have a mid-rise height. They hit me right around my navel, offering light but non-restrictive support when I was bent low in the drops. The shorts have quite a few panels. But the pieces all come together nicely and I didn’t notice any awkwardly placed or uncomfortable seams.

That being said, I do have one gripe. The silicone grip on the leg bands are not my favorite —they’re grabby enough that it takes some work to get them past my calves when I’m kitting up. While that is a bit annoying when I’m in a hurry to maximize my hour-long lunch break ride, it bordered on embarrassing when I did wear them outside and I found myself bum out, struggling with the leg bands during a nature break. Once the shorts are in place, the grip on the leg band is fine and I don’t notice it. I’m hopeful the grip wears a bit as the shorts break in. While it would be nice if the shorts started with a little less grip, time should solve the issue.

Trek Circuit Women’s Cycling Bib Short: Final Word

I’m excited to see Trek embracing and working toward offering more sustainable products and I absolutely support that move. I also think the Circuit Bibs are a great product, especially for the price. The fact that Trek’s most sustainable bibs are also not the top tier bibs, but are instead $100, is great to see. And that’s not to say a hundred bucks is cheap or “budget friendly” for a lot of folks. But for the quality of the shorts, it really is a good price.

The Circuit Women’s Bib shorts will work great for anyone doing sub-two-hour rides. They are especially great if you’re looking to lighten your impact on the planet. Remember though, the most environmentally friendly thing you can do is not buy new clothes—even environmentally friendly ones—until you actually need them.

The Black Bibs cycling shorts review: They are the king of value, but are they any good?

No branding, a super-low price, and performance that doesn't disappoint. what's not to like.

The Black Bibs

Cyclingnews Verdict

For the money, there's no competition for the original Black Bibs and that makes them the best. The chamois pad is rather wide though and the fabric lacks structure.

Gel padding in the chamois will not bruise sit bones

The price is unbeatable

Dyed fabric

Comfortable no gripper leg opening

Wide range of size options

Fabric lacks proper compression

Chamois is too wide for narrow sit bones

You can trust Cyclingnews Our experts spend countless hours testing cycling tech and will always share honest, unbiased advice to help you choose. Find out more about how we test.

There is a staggering amount of choice when it comes to bib shorts. There's also a staggering amount of pricing variation. When you see the price of some of the big names you might shake your head. Is cycling only for the wealthy? We don't think so, and for our part we do our best to include quality budget options in our list of the best cycling shorts .

One brand we haven't talked about before though is The Black Bibs. If you start looking for recommendations of inexpensive bib shorts, there's no doubt that this name will come up; you might have heard ex-pro cyclist Phil Gaimon discussing them through his considerable social platforms. They have such a following that we felt like no deep dive on the subject of inexpensive bib shorts would be complete without including them. However, there's a saying "buy cheap, buy twice" - does that ring true here? Let's find out.

Now that we've spent time testing them, we are ready to share our thoughts. So, if you are looking for an alternative to the big budget bib short options, keep reading to see if the bargain option from The Black Bibs is money well spent or a waste.

The Black Bibs rear view

Design and aesthetics

The name for The Black Bibs is all about aesthetics. It's one of the driving forces behind marketing and identity and it's all about being plain, simple, and without branding. The reality is that there are very few current cycling bib shorts with large branding. You'll find it here and there, MAAP and PAS Normal are both guilty, but for the most part, the branding on bib shorts is pretty minimal. Which is to say, take the marketing how you will but it's certainly true that The Black Bibs original are devoid of any branding.

Branding is one way that designers add style to a bib short. Clever use of graphics in the form of logos and names is exactly why MAAP and PAS Normal feature the branding they do. In the absence of that, The Black Bibs finds movement in the aesthetics through a circular motif. The edge of a chamois is almost always in a circular shape near the groin and The Black Bibs echo that in the rest of the panels.

The low back features a circular panel where the shoulder straps connect to the lower portion. The actual connection to the straps is a curved line that cuts the panel like a bite of a cookie. Below that, the bibs use separate pieces for each side and in combination, it creates a circle that echos the shape of the back of the chamois. The same two panels come through to the front and radiate out. Once again it echos the shape of the chamois stitching. For the outer thighs, there's a panel that stretches from the top edge of the waist all the way down to the bottom of the leg and wraps around to the inner thigh.

The Black Bibs product page lists the chamois as a "dual density Coolmax chamois." That's a generic naming convention that doesn't really cover the design. Coolmax is a fabric and the reference there is likely to the upper fabric. Under the red, Coolmax, upper is where you'll find the actual, dual density, chamois. The whole outer is a very dense foam that's roughly 1.7mm thick, which is then thermoformed over a series of three separate pads that mirror on the opposite side for a total of six pieces. It's difficult to calliper padding, but they range in thickness between somewhere around 17mm for the thickest, then 11mm, and finally 7mm for the smallest forward pads. The largest has a gel interior to pad the sit bones while the smaller pads use foam.

Performance

The promise of The Black Bibs is a no-nonsense design and high quality that just works. That's not really what my experience with The Black Bibs was like, but it might be for you. I happen to be a fairly small person with narrow sit bones, and if I'm testing a saddle then I take the smallest every time and it's never been wrong. The outside of the chamois used in the original bibs is 18.5cm at the widest point, that's not even counting the lower density section, and it's way too wide for me.

The rear gel pad is actually a joy to use. It's incredibly effective at protecting my sit bones on a ride and I would love it to fit me. I know this because the roughly 9x9cm pad is big enough to cover my sit bones even though it's wider than I need. This arrangement wouldn't be an issue except that it's not a solid pad. The two rear pads have about a 1.5cm gap between them and as that gap heads forward it widens out to 2cm. As the shorts curve around the outside of my hips, it squeezes the pads together and makes for a strange articulation of the two sides. It's never in quite the right place and moves around depending on how I shift my weight.

The width and sizing issues go a little beyond that as well. The fabric used ends up being part of the issue as does the sizing. The way it all plays out is that the fabric is very low compression and the fit is not that tight. To get my preferred fit I had to go down a size to XS but that doesn't change the chamois size. I would bet that the women's chamois (at a claimed 16.5cm across) is a much better fit for me.

Now despite those fit issues, everything is not lost. For one thing, if you prefer a looser fit and your sit bones aren't quite so narrow, you'd likely be very happy with the chamois. Unlike the Trek Circuit bib shorts I recently reviewed, this one should have no problem with all-day riding as long as it fits. Also, lack of compression aside, the fabric is incredibly comfortable, it's silky smooth and soft against the skin. Plus the low compression and silky feeling allow the non-flatlock design to be a non-issue. It even works in the upper thigh in a similar way to the uber-expensive Assos RSR S9 Targa bib shorts where Assos has intentionally added a low compression section.

Another great feature is the lack of a gripper at the leg opening. When I reviewed the Castelli Free Aero RC bib shorts earlier this year, I talked about how that feature wasn't such a big deal. As time has gone on I've continued to enjoy it more and more. Without the gripper, the legs aren't any more likely to ride up but they are a lot easier to get on. Castelli turned me on to the advantage of no gripper but The Black Bibs actually do it as well and instead there's just a simple 2.5cm folded hem.

The big question in a discussion of The Black Bibs is: "do they work?" Answering that means first questioning desired fit and size needs. If you've got wider hips and prefer a looser fit then The Black Bibs are a better choice than the Trek Circuit and they are half the price. If you've got smaller hips you will want to skip The Black Bibs' original design. It does get a little more complicated though.

The Black Bibs is the brand name as well as the product. The company also has The Grey Bibs, The Olive Bibs, and The Navy Bibs which differ only in colour. More importantly, they have a Plus variant, which you can safely skip as it only adds leg gripper, and the Black Bibs Ultimate. The Ultimate version is double the price of the Original, but it's still inexpensive, and the chamois is significantly improved for those with smaller hips.

The other big question is how The Black Bibs compare to high end brands like Assos and Castelli. The price is so much lower that if you get a high percentage of the performance, it would be worth the savings. If you ignore style, you do get a lot of the performance. Certainly if you are talking about one product that's almost nine times the price, it's not nine times as good. Castelli in particular is a little more of a muddy picture, since their products are some of the best in the business and not the most expensive, and they frequently go on sale.

The bottom line is that if you can only afford The Original Black bibs, there's nothing else available that gets you similar performance for the price. If you've got a bit more money though, the better buy is The Black Bibs Ultimate, unless you can find a bargain among the regular sea of cycling clothing deals . It's also important to note that if you're outside the USA, then the shipping cost will be high - you're looking at approximately $20 for the UK - which is still much cheaper than the Castelli and Assos offerings, but the total price with taxes comes to around $70, which means you're likely going to find better value in something like the dhb Classic bib short or Endura Xtract.

One more thing, since we discussed Phil Gaimon and his love of The Black Bibs in the intro, it never hurts to check out Phil’s favourite charity, No Kid Hungry .

This guide will help you choose what bike shorts are right for you as well as educate you on the different offerings from Pearl Izumi.

There are 3 main versions or levels of bibs/shorts from Pearl Izumi

trek circuit bike shorts review

2. Expedition Bib Shorts

The Expedition Bib Short is specifically designed for endurance rides and long-distance cycling. It features a slightly more relaxed fit compared to the Pro Bib Short, allowing for increased comfort during extended periods in the saddle. The Expedition Bib Short incorporates durable materials to withstand the rigors of off-road cycling or gravel riding. It provides ample moisture-wicking capabilities, ensuring you stay dry and comfortable throughout your ride. The chamois pad in the Expedition Bib Short offers excellent shock absorption and cushioning for long hours on the bike. It also has thigh cargo pockets and a center pocket on the rear of the bib. This is what makes the Expedition bib stand out from the other options.

3. Attack Bib Shorts

The Attack Bib Short is a versatile option that strikes a balance between performance and value. It is designed to offer a comfortable fit and reliable performance for a wide range of riders. The Attack Bib Short utilizes moisture-wicking fabrics to keep you cool and dry during your rides. It features a supportive chamois pad that provides adequate cushioning and comfort for medium to long rides. The Attack Bib Short has a more relaxed fit compared to the Pro Bib Short, making it suitable for both casual cyclists and those looking for a more forgiving fit.

The “Air” Versions

The Pro , Attack , and Expedition also come in an “AIR” version . You can expect to pay about $60 USD more for the AIR version. The Air versions are made with an ultra-lightweight material that is infused with a special treatment to help keep you cooler as well as lighter than the standard versions.

  • In-R-Cool – Reacts when your core temperature rises to cool and dry itself. Jerseys infrared tech cools the surface temperature.
  • Ultralight Fabrics – Air fabrics made from the lightest materials, micro-perforated, soft to the skin
  • UV Protection – Built-in UPF 50+ Sun Protection
  • Form Fitting – Stretch for perfect contouring, seamless openings
  • Levitate Chamois – dual-density, moisture wicking

Pearl Izumi PRO vs Attack Bike Chamois

More about the Levitate Chamois and Review

The Levitate(TM) chamois are some of my favorites for road and mountain biking for overall comfort, quality, and longevity. The chamois are constructed with multiple layers of varying-density foam to achieve a comfortable ride with minimal bulk. The multi-density foam helps “levitate” you off the saddle. When shopping for a Chamois you should consider the following points:

  • Comfort : The primary purpose of a chamois is to provide cushioning and support for your sit bones during long rides. Look for a chamois that offers ample padding and is designed to reduce pressure points and friction. Consider the thickness and density of the padding, as well as any ergonomic features or multi-density foam construction that can enhance comfort.
  • Fit and Size : Chamois come in various sizes to accommodate different body types. It’s crucial to choose a chamois that fits properly and provides sufficient coverage. Consider the sizing charts provided by the manufacturer and take measurements to ensure a proper fit. A chamois that is too small or too large can lead to discomfort and chafing.
  • Breathability and Moisture Management : Look for a chamois that incorporates breathable materials and features to allow for adequate airflow and moisture-wicking properties. This helps keep you dry and comfortable by minimizing sweat accumulation and reducing the risk of chafing or skin irritation.
  • Durability : Consider the durability of the chamois, especially if you plan to do long rides or use it frequently. Look for materials that are resilient and can withstand the rigors of cycling. Reinforced stitching and high-quality fabric can contribute to the longevity of the chamois.
  • Brand and Reviews : Consider reputable brands known for their cycling apparel and chamois quality. Read customer reviews and ratings to gain insights into the performance and durability of specific chamois options. Real user experiences can provide valuable information when making your decision.
  • Price : Chamois can vary in price range, depending on the brand, features, and quality. Set a budget and consider the value offered by different options within that range. Remember that investing in a higher-quality chamois can enhance your comfort and overall riding experience.
  • Try Before Buying : If possible, try on the chamois or test it out in-store before making a purchase. This can give you a better sense of the fit, comfort, and overall feel.

1. Levitate PRO Chamois

The Levitate PRO is the most advanced and comfortable Chamois in the Pearl Izumi lineup. It has more support with ultra-high density . The high-density foam offers a more supportive yet comfortable ride, especially on longer rides. It has excellent moisture-wicking properties to keep you dry and comfortable on long hot rides. Lastly, the multiple layers provide a drag-free sensation to prevent chafing with the repetitive movement of cycling.

2. Levitate Plus Chamois

The Levitate Plus is found primarily in Pearl Izumi tights. It’s very similar to the PRO chamois offering two layers of foam but these are softer high-density and medium-density layers of foam. You still get the dual layer to help reduce friction and a relief channel in the middle to help alleviate pressure. They offer great breathability and moisture management because of the high-quality materials used. The multi-layer moves with you on the bike to help reduce friction.

3. Levitate Chamois

The Levitate chamois is a great overall value chamois that in my opinion offers a great value and is often better comfort and fit than other similarly priced chamois. Some of the features of the Levitate Pro Chamois have trickled down to the Levitate Chamois. It has a relief channel and a tapered pad for an infinite feel from pad to skin and fast-drying fabric. The main difference is that it’s cut from a single layer of foam.

My Personal Opinion on the Levitate Chamois

Having used all three chamois and many others listed below from Pearl Izumi I can say the amount of thought and design that has gone into the design defiantly shows. The fit and material reduce any gaps in the chamois to the skin. This helps with moisture management, comfort, and friction. I typically ride from 2 to 3 hours at a time and prefer the comfort and support of the Levitate PRO Chamois. However, on most Mountain Bike rides where I am in and out of the saddle the Levitate Chamois is preferred.

It’s also worth mentioning the quality and build of the Levitate Chamois. I’ve had some Pearl Izumi shorts and bibs for years now and logged hundreds if not thousands of miles in them. Where other less similarly priced or less expensive chamois have started to lose their stretch and get a “saggy diaper” feel to them, the Levitate Chamois has remained tight to my skin. they may show a little sign of dirt and not as clean after washing them weekly for years, but the performance is still there.

Other Pearl Izume Chamois

Clearing up the confusion around Pearl Izumi Bibs and Shorts

When shopping for bibs or short it can get confusing with all of the options of Expedition Bibs that offer the PRO features. What Chamois is included with what shorts? Understanding the basics of the three offerings of PRO, Expedition, and Attack helps you to know where to start shopping. The Pro and Pro Air are going to be the top-of-the-line offered by Pearl Izumi and the price will show that. They are the most comfortable with the highest quality of materials.

Moving toward the Attack versions of bibs and shorts you will find more value and budget-friendly options. These are still very good cycling shorts, and if you are newer to cycling may not notice a difference from a “Laser Cut Bib Strap” to the sewn bib straps. Or an advanced highly breathable cooling material may feel exactly the same to you as any other bike short. It’s best to start with the Attack budget-friendly options before jumping into the fancy higher priced versions.

Older Models

When shopping for Pearl Izumi shorts and bibs you might also see these other options of shorts available they are sometimes discontinued or ultra-value options that come included with some mountain bike shorts. They can still be great options and are worth looking into as they can save a lot of money over the higher priced advanced options we mentioned above.

A Review of the New Trek Velocis Cycling Bibs

Trek is back in the apparel business with the new Velocis cycling bibs! And yes, we know Bontrager is part of Trek, so technically, they were making the old stuff. This Trek Velocis bib review will look at what you can expect from the modestly priced bibs with all its updated features.

New Trek Velocis Bibs

  • Competitive Price
  • High-end material and feel
  • Longer leg length
  • Reduced total seem amount
  • 30 day guarantee
  • Chamois isn’t anything special
  • Sloppy construction
  • Still no “cargo” version

First Impressions

The new Velocis bibs feel like a more expensive bib when you first feel them at the shop. This makes the $145 price feel like a bargain. It’s worth noting that it’s impressive that Trek has kept the price of these bibs down for so long. The previous versions, Bontrager Velocis bibs and Bontrager RXL bibs, had similar prices over the last decade. Things you will notice when trying them on and love is the soft fabric feel and the low amount of seems on the bibs. The leg gripper is also comfortable and doesn’t pull.

Trek Velocis Bib Review

We were excited to get out on the Trek Velocis bibs to review them once we had them in hand, but it didn’t take long to remember why our previous generation of these bibs stayed in the closet. Even though these bibs have a new chamois design, it seems not to be that comfortable. It’s not so bad you won’t use them, but I doubt these shorts will make it into the regular rotation for anything other than short 1-hour training rides. Have we likely been spoiled by riding bibs that are twice this price from POC and Rapha? Even the cheaper custom bibs from Champ-Sys have a more comfortable chamois. I can’t imagine doing a more extended event like Unbound Gravel or century in these.

We also had some of the seems on the bibs that went past the fabric end. It doesn’t take anything away from the function, but it looks like an oversight for what I am sure Trek considers to be their high-end bibs.

Trek/Bontrager is still noticeably missing a pair of cargo shorts from the lineup. Why not give the riders everything they want for a company that is investing so much into the gravel market, such as the new Trek Checkpoint.

Final Thoughts

Are the Velocis bibs worth the $145 price? Yes, mainly because you have 30 days to see if they work for you. We will be keeping ours and may even invest in another pair as a weekday training bib because for the price; we won’t worry about wearing them out over a year of hard training compared to a $300 pair from Velocio.

Trek Circuit LTD Jersey Review

Classic jersey lines, eco-friendly construction

While Trek-branded apparel isn’t entirely new for the folks in Waterloo, I can’t think of many instances where the Bontrager brand was completely excluded from the item. Now, with this new clothing line, Trek may be dropping hints as to the future of the Bontrager brand. Maybe. Maybe not, but it is interesting and my contacts at Trek have been mum about it so far. Purists may scoff at a Trek kit with a Specialized or Cannondale bike, but a great kit is a great kit as far as I’m concerned.

For example, the Specialized SL Bib shorts and HyprViz SL Air Jersey remain among my favorite kits and frankly, I don’t care that they are from the Big S. Granted, the branding is subtle, so that may have something to do with my indifference to the scoffing cycling fashionistas, but they are great. Along those lines, the handful of items from Trek that I’m testing also have subtle branding that, hopefully makes them kosher for even the most particular among us.

Trek Circuit LTD Jersey and Circuit Bib Shorts Review

So, let’s get back to the Trek Circuit LTD Jersey. The cut and style of this one is as classic as can be. It is fitted, but not race-tight, features three jersey pockets, a card sleeve, laser-cut cuffs, silicone-printed grippers, a traditional collar and subtle branding. The materials are both eco-friendly (40% recycled) and tested devoid of harmful chemicals and materials.

One of the big selling points is the 37.5™ active-particle technology that’s infused into the fabric. The goal is to maintain proper body temperatures — no matter the outside temps. That’s no small challenge, due to the thickness of the material. My initial testing has been indoors with Zwift and this jersey gets super-saturated after a hard session. I mean, completely saturated. In the real world, I’ve appreciated the Trek Circuit LTD Jersey on cool rides where a little added warmth is desired. On mid-day rides in the 80’s, it does feel warmer than jerseys I would typically wear for those conditions. Part of that is certainly due to the dark color, but I’m still not going to grab this one on hot summer days. Trek does give a nod to added breathability by placing mesh material on the sides and underarm, but it’s still lacking true airflow.

Trek Circuit LTD Jersey Review - Zwift Sessions

I will add that on warm rides, it doesn’t get nearly as saturated as an indoor session (even with a good fan blowing), so that’s good. The material simply feels thick and the traditional-height collar does trap heat. On top of that, the front zip is difficult to unzip one-handed when airflow is needed. In short, the Circuit LTD is great for rides from about 60-75 degrees. Early morning rides are prime candidates for the Circuit. For temperatures above that, I’m going to opt for something with more mesh and built-in airflow.

As an added bonus, this fabric is awesome for cleaning sunglass lenses. It’s soft and absorbent and cleans lenses better than any jersey I’ve got.

Trek Circuit LTD Jersey Review - Three Falls

The three jersey pockets are easily-reached and can haul the typical amount of items without worry. The sleeve on the left pocket can also separate items from each other. I can see a couple of credit cards and ID or a multi-tool for that sleeve as it does a great job of separating items. They are pleated at the bottom, so volume is larger than a standard jersey pocket for added hauling.

Trek Circuit LTD Jersey Review

I really appreciate the extra length and silicone-gripper material that keeps this jersey in place. Both the hem and sleeves stay put quite well but the hem does tend to curl up a little. The diameter of the sleeves is also compatible with normal-sized biceps (e.g. you don’t have to be a super-skinny cyclist). It does do okay for a couple of rides between washing and that hang loop on the collar is a nice touch.

Fit: I’m 5’11” and 175 lbs, and am wearing the size medium.

  • Comfortable fabrics against the skin
  • Great-sized pockets and the extra sleeve is nice
  • Great coverage and silicone-grippy material keeps things put
  • Affordable price point
  • Classic styling with muted branding
  • Fabric cleans sunglass lenses very well
  • Hem can tend to curl up
  • Fabric is warm, so it’s not recommended for hot days
  • You’ll saturate it indoor training
  • Hard to unzip one-handed

The Bottom Line: Trek Circuit LTD Jersey

This new jersey comes in with classic lines infused with added performance materials that are also eco-friendly. With a streamlined, athletic fit, you’ll appreciate the comfort of the materials, but it does feel thick and rides a touch too warm for hot days in the saddle. I dig the subtle branding and can definitely see myself grabbing this one for the right outdoor temperatures.

Review: Trek Fetch+ 2

One of the things that can be intimidating about buying a cargo ebike is how unfamiliar they feel. Whether a bike is designed with weird geometry and wheel sizes or odd features for heavy hauling, every ride can feel unfamiliar.

For traditional cyclists who want to haul a grocery store trip’s worth of groceries home but don’t want to mess with technology they’re unfamiliar with, the Trek Fetch+ 2 is a decent option. It’s more expensive than some of our favorite alternatives, but it has an easy-to-ride step-through design, well-made components, and great plastic buckets (and other accessories) for storage.

There are bikes with more advanced features for the money, but even after I spent a summer riding the Fetch+ 2, it barely needed a tune-up. For a modern cargo ebike with a classic cargo bike maintenance schedule, it might be worth spending a bit more cash.

On the Road

The Fetch+ 2 is the smaller of Trek’s two latest cargo ebikes, which includes the box-fronted Fetch+ 4 ($8,500) , which is more oriented toward toting around dogs and children in between groceries and beer.

The Fetch+ 2 instead is a more traditional step-through cargo bike that employs a myriad of attachments, most notably two plastic panniers that hang off an extended rack on the rear. You can get a padded seat cover for the rear to let friends hold on and ride, or mount a couple kids’ seats behind you, but I’d still probably use this bike more for errands than transporting little ones.

Side view of black and silver bike with 2 containers attached near the rear wheel and 2 containers attached near the...

As an objet d’art , the bike is simple and unassuming, which is ideal for a bike this expensive. The battery is integrated into the frame, but a sizable bulge means nobody will fail to notice it's an ebike. You can get it in three colors. I liked the black of our review unit, but the bright blue would probably be my choice if I was buying one.

While much of the bike will be familiar to anyone who has ever seen or contemplated a cargo bike, Trek really gets the geometry and style of this bike correct as far as making it very usable for many tasks. Even the dual-sided kickstand pops up and down with remarkable ease (shockingly rare on other large ebikes I've used). I particularly enjoyed using the rear panniers for hauling flats of berries and other easily squished items that tend to rattle around in softer panniers.

The panniers fit a ton of stuff; I was able to get four full-size grocery bags spread between the two black plastic totes. I like that they had little plugs in the bottom that you could feasibly use a plastic bag to cover and then fill them with ice and drinks.

I spent a couple months using the Fetch+ 2 as my primary bike, and came away much more impressed than anticipated, given the specs and the price.

On paper, this is an expensive ebike to have pretty standard mid-drive cargo bike specs. The 85 Nm Bosch motor and 500-wH battery are good for 20-plus miles a day loaded down in any city, but they’re not better than models like the larger Xtracycle Stoker, which has the same torque and a 630-wH battery for $4,999. The Trek also doesn’t have a carbon belt drive and variable transmission, which we consider the best (and easiest to maintain) shifting mechanism for cargo bikes.

Overhead view of bike handlebars

The more traditional chain-and-gears drivetrain and no suspension make this a less comfortable and more difficult-to-maintain bike than favorites like the Tern GSD ( 8/10, WIRED Recommends ), which costs about the same. I have to say, I was expecting the difference in riding experience to be more severe. The fatter-than-usual 20 x 2.35-inch tires of the Trek absorbed potholes better than other suspensionless bikes. It also stopped just as well as its competitors, thanks to hydraulic disc brakes.

Mid-drive cargo bikes are much better than their rear-hub counterparts, especially when toting larger items or smaller humans, because they allow you to get more torque to the wheels, and provide a more traditional riding experience. I never found myself lacking for power, though I did crunch through the gears a bit when starting on a hill.

The Fetch+ 2 rides really well, with a solid frame and no creaks or sketchiness of any kind (as picked up from my local Trek dealer, another plus of ordering from the brand), and I really liked how bright the built-in lights were when riding home from soccer games and band practices at night. The fat wheels were easy to turn, giving this a turning radius similar to a non-extended ebike when I was making U-turns in the city. It also has a built-in phone mount with a wireless charger, which makes it really nice for using a map app to cruise to unfamiliar places.

Side view of grey and black bike with small rack over the rear tire

It’s not a fun bike to ride in the traditional sense; it’s not the fastest or the most comfortable, but it is satisfyingly robust and confidence-inducing. In my months of riding, I never had a single issue with the bike. That’s unusual given the state of some of the roads I often took the Fetch+ 2 on the side of, and a testament to Trek's great build quality.

If I was a longtime Trek owner and interested in getting into cargo ebikes, I’d certainly give this line a look, with the understanding that I might find something I like better from Tern, Xtracycle, or another brand for the same price—or something from Rad Power Bikes or another more affordable direct-to-consumer manufacturer for less. It’s a well-made bike that does what it claims to do, but it’s on the spendy side.

It is a bit hard to come by, at least in bike shops around my hometown of Portland, Oregon. If you’re interested in this one for your treks around town, I’d make sure to call ahead for a test ride. If you want a familiar-feeling bike with all the frills of electrification, it’s worth a spin.
