Ultimate Barcelona Vegan Guide: Restaurants, Tours, & More

' src=

Barcelona is one of my favorite cities and one of the best cities to visit in Spain! It is a city full of life, culture, beauty and it doesn’t hurt that year-round it has pretty marvelous weather. From the unique art of Antoni Gaudí that fills Park Güell to amazing vegan restaurants, shopping, and nightlife — there is something for everyone to enjoy!

This Barcelona vegan guide will help you plan your entire adventure from finding vegan restaurants for brunch to stores to shop and everything in between!

One last thing, if you’re feeling a little anxious about traveling as a vegan, be sure to check out my  vegan travel tips!

TIP: If you visit in late January – March, you’ll still experience temperate weather with fewer tourists and it will be less expensive! On average it is in the low 60’s with a bit more rain in March than January or February.

Is Barcelona Vegan-Friendly?

Yes! Barcelona is very vegan-friendly — actually more friendly than I anticipated. You’ll find over 50 vegan restaurants, vegan markets, and shops, plus loads of places that have great options! According to HappyCow, the number of vegan-friendly businesses grew by 173% since 2022. On top of all that, just outside of the city, you’ll find one of the largest vegan festivals in Europe — Vegan Fest Catalunya.

Yum! Top vegetarian restaurants in Barcelona

This blog post was originally posted on August 27, 2014 and was updated on September 6, 2017.

There exists a sort of myth that vegetarians have it tough in Spain…

Of course, all things pork  do play an important role in the many different regions’ cuisines, but by no means do they dominate it, especially in such a cosmopolitan city as this one. Vegetarian restaurants in Barcelona may seem few and far between, but we have the inside scoop! Vegetarians can easily enjoy Barcelona as much as their meat-eating friends. Here is a brief and delicious vegetarian guide to Barcelona.

Our complete vegetarian guide to Barcelona will show you the best places to enjoy authentic, veggie-friendly food in the Catalan capital!

Veggie Garden

Near the Macba in the heart of the Raval neighborhood, you can find a spacious, colorful and vegan restaurant called Veggie Garden . Focusing mostly on ethnic flavors, the menu here is 100% organic and significantly varied. From the flavorful hot and cold soups to the tofu curry dishes, the portions are generous and cheap, and you can even enjoy them on the sizable terrace outside.

Address:  Carrer dels Angels, 3

BarCeloneta

Before or after visiting Barceloneta, the old fishermen’s neighborhood  and adjoining beach, check out this lovely sangria bar that does delicious tapas and flavorful tofu burgers. BarCeloneta is a worthy addition to any vegetarian guide to Barcelona. Also worth noting is their weekend brunch , offering up a buffet as well as “light, basic, medium and strong” menus starting at 8,50 euro.

Address:  Carrer Sevilla, 70

The best vegetarian food in Barcelona--it's not hard to find!

Perfect for vegetarians in Barcelona, but also for beer lovers, burger fans and musicians, CatBarCAT is an awesome place to spend an evening trying out different local craft beers while listening to piano jam sessions (or playing—the piano is there for anyone who wants to give it a whirl). With over 30 different bottled beer options and several different tapas and burgers, this punky spot a neighborhood favorite.

Address:  Carrer Boria, 17

Devour Barcelona

We can’t help but toot our own horn when it comes to talking about a vegetarian guide to Barcelona! We offer a wide variety of vegetarian-friendly food tours in Barcelona . Throughout every experience, you will have your fill of some of the most traditional (and vegetarian!) Barcelona specialties as well as a taste of local history and culture.

It would have been funny to see what locals thought of Govinda back when it opened in the 80s. The first vegetarian restaurant in Barcelona, this Indian restaurant is a classic in Ciutat Vella. It’s particularly unique, with generous portions and a fantastic, three-course weekday lunch menu. It’s a delicious, unique addition to any vegetarian guide to Barcelona.

Adress:  Plaça de la Vila de Madrid, 4

Les Tres a la Cuina

Les Tres a la Cuina is a lovely little spot in the lovely Village of Gracia neighborhood.  It’s one of our favorites for homemade, flavorful food that also happens to be super healthy, wholesome and vegetarian-friendly! From a green gazpacho to a couscous salad, these three ladies change their menu daily and post it online so you can take a glimpse before stopping by. They also do takeaway, perfect to carry out to your rental apartment’s terrace!

Address:  Carrer Sant Lluís, 35

Why Barcelona Is The Best Place In Spain To Be A Vegan

vegetarian food tour barcelona

Since 2016, Barcelona has officially been a  vegetarian and vegan-friendly city . So what exactly does that mean? Well, it means that one of the city’s left-wing parties presented a bill to City Hall which was accepted. Now Barcelona – the land of cured meat – will take action to encourage their population to embrace a plant-based diet. The state has begun to take an active role in reducing meat consumption, which could mean that Barcelona is the perfect vacation destination for all you vegans. Read on to find out what the veggie-friendly bill means and where you can secure some top quality ( not to mention healthy ) vegan food.

BCNvegPoint

One of the most tangible consequences of the veggie-friendly bill is the creation of a new BCNvegPoint. This is an initiative to provide a space for small and medium, vegetarian and vegan businesses to cooperate and interact with each other. This extra-governmental support gives plant-based enterprises an opportunity to grow.

The difficulty for many people in becoming vegan is simply the lack of services. If there were more vegan businesses,  catering great vegan food , then it is likely the number of vegans will increase. Spain is already in the  top ten for vegan concentration  by country, but this move could push it higher up the rankings.

Meat Free Mondays

The bill also states that the government will publicize and  encourage Meat Free Monday . This is a campaign set up in 2009 by Paul McCartney, along with daughters Mary and Stella. The aim here is to encourage meat-eaters to take just a single day a week to give up meat. This might not seem like much, but with millions of participants over many years, this would save immeasurable damage being done to the environment, not to mention the lives of animals.

Going meat-free has another positive effect. If each Monday, huge swathes of Barcelona give up meat, then restaurants will be under more pressure to provide a vegetarian alternative. It is also a good way to help people get used to a meat-free diet, which may encourage them to extend beyond more than just one day a week.

Top vegan restaurants in Barcelona

Barcelona has a young and trendy population so vegan restaurants are popping up all the time as well as their vegetarian sisters and brothers , which are better established. It would be almost impossible to list them all, let alone eat at each one. Honorable mentions include the takeaway Bio Bento , Sesamo at the Sant Antoni foodies district, trendy Teresa Carles , and raw vegan restaurant El Cafe Blueproject . While these are both setup by and dedicated to the vegan community, you’ll find that plenty of traditional restaurants are rapidly adding vegan dishes to their menu.

Since Barcelona officially declared itself as a veggie-friendly city, it has gone from the land of the meat to a vegan haven. If you eat a mostly plant-based diet, then you should have no problem finding healthy and delicious food in this city. Barcelona combines its traditional master cuisine with changing societal trends to produce vegan food as good as its meat and dairy alternatives.

And in case you are into an immersion into Catalan gastronomy and learning tons of local culture, our foodie experiences in Barcelona are vegan or vegetarian-friendly! Cheers!

Vegan Barcelona | Best Restaurants, Food Tours, Hotels & More

Barcelona could easily be called one of the most vegan friend cities in southern Europe . The concept of veganism is well understood and there are more and more vegan places opening up every month. We only spent a few days in Barcelona so didn’t get to go to quite every single one of them, but we hit some of the highlights and were very gracefully helped by Caitlin of The Vegan Word in prioritising which places to visit, since she lived there at the time.

  • breakfast: typically 09:00-11:00
  • lunch: typically 13:00-16:00

  • serves meat / vegetarian / vegan / raw vegan

A rough price range (based on prices of mains)

  • cheap: up to €8
  • moderate: €8-€12
  • expensive: €12+

Here is our vegan Barcelona guide with the highlights from our brief trip.

vegan / lunch & dinner / cheap

One of the oldest vegan restaurants in Barcelona, this small and casual joint is the go-to place to satisfy your fast food cravings. The sandwiches and burgers are generous and served with lots of sauce, chips are crispy and satisfying, and the range of cakes is impressive.

The giant creamy things are delicious and they also do pretty good cinnamon swirls, donuts and muffins. It has a bit of a counter-cultural vibe, but is welcoming if a little packed.

  • Address : Carrer dels Escudellers, 42, 08002 Barcelona
  • Foursquare ; Facebook

vegan / lunch / cheap

There is no seating at this cute take away place, and the focus is on healthy vegan food that is ready to eat. The hummus, tortilla and quiche are lovely, and there are a few other goodies such as soy meatballs, soups, salads and the occasional cake. Great for grabbing a quick bite while on the way elsewhere.

  • Address : Carrer del Torrent de l'Olla, 138, 08012 Barcelona
  • Foursquare ; Facebook ; Instagram ; website

vegan / breakfast, lunch / moderate

The new kid on the block, this is currently Barcelona’s only 100% vegan bakery. Both the setting and staff are lovely, though there is no seating: instead buy something here and walk up to Plaça de la Virreina to eat baked goods on a bench in the sun.

The cakes are huge and delicious and the brownies are especially amazing. There are also muffins, cookies and several gluten free options.

  • Address : Carrer de Torrijos, 37, 08012 Barcelona
  • Foursquare ; Facebook ;  website

Dolce Pizza y los Veganos

vegetarian, vegan / lunch & dinner / expensive

This place has an extensive menu, with half of the pizzas vegetarian and the other half vegan. They make their own vegan cheese, mostly nut based, and bases are generous and crispy.

The vast majority of the ingredients are organic, but they do not advertise the fact as they don’t want that to be the focus of the food: instead, they are keen on offering great pizza, and they certainly do! All the desserts are vegan, with the perfectly moist tiramisu being the absolute winner.

  • Address : Avenida de Gaudí, 74, 08025 Barcelona

vegetarian, vegan / breakfast, lunch / moderate

A lovely hipster coffee shop that offers soy, oat or almond milk for hot drinks and always has at least one vegan cake, usually the very sweet carrot cake. But make sure to ask, as it changes.

The chai is especially good and the setting is delightful. The back area could also make a decent place to work from your laptop, if that’s what you’re looking for. Everyone there is beautiful, staff and customers alike, making it a great place to people watch and take in some eye candy!

  • Address : Carrer de Santa Teresa, 1, 08012 Barcelona

vegan / dinner / moderate

This all vegan bar serves an enormous range of beers from all over the world, as well as a few vegan burgers and croissants or other cakes. The burgers are tasty if a little dry, but quite substantial.

There is a piano for guests to play if they wish, but unfortunately no cats as the name might imply. A nice choice for an alternative evening hangout with some quirky decor.

  • Address : Carrer de la Bòria, 17, 08003 Barcelona

Blueproject Café

vegetarian, vegan, raw vegan / lunch / expensive

Attached to an art space of the same name, this vegetarian café is beautifully designed and full of light. As well as selling some organic t-shirts, there are a lot of vegan options, plus some raw and gluten free ones too, all of which is marked very clearly on the menu.

For hot drinks there is a choice of oat, rice, soy or almond milk. Service is delightful and it’s a wonderful place to sit and relax on a sunny day after enjoying the art on display next door.

  • Address : Carrer de la Princesa, 57, 08003 Barcelona
  • Foursquare ; Facebook ; website

vegetarian, vegan / lunch, dinner / moderate

With three locations around the city, this vegetarian restaurant blends Spanish and Asian flavours in some delightful combinations, such as the vegetable paella, Thai curry or seitan lasagna. Vegan options make up about a third of the menu and are clearly marked.

Staff are very friendly and welcoming and the setting is cosy and inviting. It’s a good place for a slightly nicer evening meal perhaps, or a generous and filling set lunch menu.

Vegan-Friendly Hotels in Barcelona

Eco Boutique Grau – this 2-star, eco-friendly hotel is well located in the center with easy access to Barcelona's best hot spots, including some of its popular vegan restaurants. The hotel bar offers a selection of ecological wines and they focus on renewable energy and environmentally-friendly technology.

Casa Bella Gracia – an eco-friendly hostel located in the Gracia neighborhood, a bohemian area with a variety of eco-friendly business, vegan restaurants and a vegan supermarket. Many popular attractions in Barcelona are located just a 10-minute walk away including Casa Batllo, the Antoni Tapies Foundation and Casa Lleo Morera. There is a small bar and restaurant onsite and you can also prepare your own food in the shared kitchen.

Recommended Hotels in Barcelona

While not specifically vegan-friendly, this shortlist of our favorite hotels has been hand-selected to provide with a variety hotel options in the city to consider if you’re visiting Barcelona.

Hotel Clarís – this property is located in Eixample near plenty of shopping and cultural attractions, only steps away from the Passeig de Gràcia, the legendary Plaza Catalunya, Las Ramblas and the historic Gothic Quarter.

Axel Hotel – They are the first gay hotel chain to coin the term “straight-friendly.” And even better is the rooftop patio with a pool and bar. Even if you don’t stay here, the rooftop bar is open to the public and well worth a visit during the evening for a cocktail and nice view. The Axel is located in the heart of the Eixample gay neighborhood. Great gym and restaurant onsite.

Hotel Soho – For those who love minimalism and innovative design, Hotel Soho Barcelona is the perfect choice, right the heart of Eixample. Hotel Soho is located between Plaza España and Plaza Universidad and receives guests into a glazed atrium. It offers an outdoor terrace pool with incredible panoramic views of Gran Vía.

TOC Hostel – this is a high end, designer hostel located in Eixample. This is a great option if you’re on a tight budget or really like the social atmosphere found in hostels. You’ll find lots of great common areas plus an outdoor pool and terrace. They offer both shared and private rooms starting at 20€ per night.

There are many sites for apartment rentals including Airbnb and Vrbo. Prices are generally comparable to budget hotels, especially if you’re willing to get a room in a shared apartment.

I knew Barcelona was a hot bed of awesome vegan food, but I got lazy and parked my butt at Gopal for most of my few-day trip. It was so good and easy to find, but next time I’m in Barcelona again I will venture out.

Mmmmm all looks amazing!! I haven’t been back to Barcelona since becoming vegan a few years ago, so looks like I’ll have more than enough to try when I head back. Great post!

Story at Every Corner

How to Eat Like a Local in Barcelona, as Vegetarian

Barcelona , Blog Post , Destinations , Europe , Food , Spain

Every day was a vegan/vegetarian tapas food tour of Barcelona for our family of foodies. It was winter break from school and we indulged in many food discussions followed by anticipation and satisfaction. Along the way, we learned about the authentic local Spanish foods, tapas, and the best vegan and vegetarian restaurants.

In this article, I describe the authentic and local Spanish foods, and where we found vegetarian and vegan food in Barcelona. Some of the restaurants and tapa bars we ate at were fully vegetarian or vegan while others were conventional restaurants that serve vegan or vegetarian options. I’ll also include the list of vegan-friendly restaurants in Barcelona that we meant to try but didn’t get to.

More importantly, I will share the backstories of the culture that gives color to the present day flavors of Barcelona.

Vegan Paella

Bakery & bread, vegetarian and vegan culture on the rise, vegan friendly restaurants we tried in barcelona, more vegan restaurants on our barcelona list, popular food markets in barcelona, awesome food ideas for vegans.

Disclaimer: This article refers to a food tour that was provided by WithLocals. However, the idea to write this article and its contents are entirely my own.

To get a food culture immersion, we took a food tour with Natalia of WithLocals . Our guide shared much of the information and cultural anecdotes in this article. She brought perspective and context to the mindset, culture and the food scene of Barcelona. She brought the city’s heart to life for us. I hope to share my perspectives and some tips with you.

Local Foods of Barcelona

Let’s start with the foods of Barcelona and what they are. Local Catalonian food of Barcelona is predominately fish, ham, and cheese-based although it’s rare to see beef because of its high cost in Catalonia.

The good news is that times are changing. People are realizing the enormous health hazards, environmental impact, and violence involved in meat production. Like much of the world, Barcelona is surly embracing vegan and vegetarian food. It’ll be hard to change the habits of the older generation that’s set in their ways and beliefs. But, the younger generation is rapidly transitioning to a more plant-based diet or turning completely vegan.

Here are the most popular nibblers, tapas, main dishes, pintxos, and desserts from Catalonia and where we found vegetarian and vegan preparations in Barcelona.

Catalonians love their olives. You can see dozens of varieties in any food market. Our guide, Natalie, picked some green and black (dark maroon) olives for taste, both were absolutely delicious. She described the various types of olives, their source, significance, varieties, and so much more while we devoured the yummy nibblers.

Olive tasking in Barcelona's food market, an excellent vegan snack.

Formatges – Selection of local Sheep or Goat cheeses

Sheep cheese is an absolute essential in any Catalonian meal. We sampled cheeses in the market visit during our food tour as we chatted about their various textures and flavors.

Earlier when we visited Montserrat, we met the villagers from around the mountains that bring their wares to sell by the monastery. They reminded me of the delicious and fresh food in the mountain villages of Sinhagad .

Honey, nuts, and snacks produced by the Spanish mountain villages around Montserrat.

The villagers near Montserrat make the best goat and sheep cheese. Typically the cheese in Montserrat is are aged longer, giving a stronger flavor. As we learned, the longer aging process also enhances the spicy flavor of the cheese. They make for delicious vegetarian Spanish food.

Aged goat and sheep cheese in Montserrat, from the Spanish mountain villages.

If you’re visiting Montserrat, their local produce of roasted nuts, fig, apple pomegranate cakes with nuts is amazing. If you like vegetarian Spanish food, honey, pollen, cheese, cheesecake, nougat, etc are also the best in Montserrat. You can also taste samples of cheese before you buy.

Figs and nut cakes in Montserrat, made by local villagers.

Nuts are an essential part of the snack pallet in regular and vegan Barcelona. They are typically roasted, coated and sold in small bags or bulk. They have sweet and savory nuts, a perfect snack for all pallets. We found them in all the food markets in Barcelona and in Montserrat.

Nuts of all kinds, a delicious nibbler in Barcelona.

The fun Pintxos is very pretty looking, bite-size appetizers, placed in tiered plates on high bars. They are an essential part of Barcelona’s culture.

If you’re in Barcelona, you’ll see Tapas restaurants everywhere. Also, most restaurants have a tapas section on the menu. I feel tapas are more like small plates, typically a few pieces of appetizers to share, similar to what you’ll see around the world. However certain tapas dishes are more traditional and popular in Barcelona.

Empanadas are a typical Barcelona street food that can be found in every market or empanada-only shops, anywhere you look.

Empanada at Barcelona's Spanish food markets

We found some decent cheese empanadas in the Mercat de Boqueria. But we found amazing vegan and vegetarian empanada in a tiny empanada shop on the pedestrian path going from the Sant Pau hospital museum to Sagrada Familia. It was on the left not too far from the hospital.

A nice empanada stop in Barcelona, a nice supplement to Vegan restaurants in Barcelona

Patates Braves – Potatoes with Sauces

Fried cubes or wedges of potatoes are a popular tapa and can be found in pretty much any restaurant or tapa joint. What really makes it special is the homemade aioli and the spicy sauce. Our guide took us to a local joint that we would have never spotted. They make the best Patates braves and more importantly, they make the best homemade sauces.

Patates Braves, POTATOES WITH SAUCES - vegetarian and vegan tapas in Barcelona

Tomato Bread – Barcelona’s take on Bruschetta

Other than the ingredients, there’s little resemblance between the delicious Barcelona tapas and its Italian sibling. The bread has a completely different texture. It’s topped with grated tomatoes and salt, then toasted. Although these are not so fancy looking, the tomato bread was our absolute favorite on the food tour.

Pebrots de Padrón

Pebrots de Padrón are small fried peppers sprinkled with salt crystals. The ingredients are simple but when done properly with the freshest and most flavorful peppers, they taste amazing. I alone probably ate half of this plate. They were soft, mild and full of flavor. They reminded me of soshito peppers that are more popular in California.

Truita (Omelette)

Tortilla de patata (potatoes and onions) truita are the most traditional tapas. Some restaurants make them with espinacs (spinach) or carbassó (courgette/zuchini).

Croquetes (Croquettes)

These are stuffed fried balls with a crunchy top. Traditionally they are stuffed with meat in Catalonia but we had a combination platter. The croquettes were filled with cheese, ceps (mushrooms) or espinacs (spinach).

At the New Years eve dinner, Teresa Carles served three different croquetes, two with cheese and one vegan.

Escalivada are grilled red peppers and aubergines/eggplants. They are oven-roasted until soft and served cold or hot in olive oil. Sometimes they include anchovies so be sure to let the server know when ordering.

Carxofes fregides

Another favorite tapa is the fried sliced artichokes. Something to try on our next trip.

Xampinyons al ajillo

One can never go wrong with mushrooms, especially those cooked in a lot of olive oil and garlic. They are served in a classic terracotta dish.

Creative New Tapas

In addition to the classics, Barcelona’s food scene is bursting with innovation. Some wonderful vegan restaurants cater to the gourmet foodie pallets, like this mango avocado tartare at Teresa Carles –

Here are polenta tapas stuffed with mushrooms, topped with a delicious sauce and garnished for presentation. We had these in BarCeloneta Sangria bar.

There are polenta tapas stuffed with mushrooms, topped with a delicious sauce and garnished for presentation. We had these in BarCeloneta Sangria bar, a vegan restaurant in Barcelona.

Paella is a traditional, coastal rice and seafood-based dish. The one we had was loaded with delicious vegetables and gourmet mushrooms. It was wholesome and flavorful. It was served with a vegan aioli and lemon wedges. It made for a very satisfying dinner.

We had the vegan paella at BarCeloneta Sangria bar near Barceloneta beach. It’s an all-vegan restaurant in a quiet street, with absolutely delicious vegan and raw-vegan dishes. While we ate, it filled up with customers. You see we eat dinner around 6-8 pm while dinner time for locals of Barcelona starts around 9. Naturally, there were only some tourists before 9 pm.

Vegan Paella in BarCeloneta

I’m not much of a sweet tooth so I probably only noticed what spoke the loudest – Churros and gelatos were everywhere. Otherwise, restaurants had a usual western dessert menu. Some were more interesting based on the chef’s talents.

A pastry delicacy made vegan in Teresa Carles in Barcelona.

Churro seemed to be the most popular street food dessert or snack in Barcelona. There are churro places everywhere, in residential neighborhoods, old town, touristy places, and outside monuments. It’s Spain’s answer to the quintessential fried dough+sugar desserts found in every culture.

Most churros have eggs in them but many are made with coconut oil and no eggs. It’s easy to check and confirm.

Unlike Mexicans, the Catalonians dip their churros in chocolate sauce and sometimes in whipped cream. The pairing works very well. Most plates of churros come in 5-8, about 5” pieces. Some places also have stuffed churros with a huge variety of stuffings.

We had churros in three different neighborhoods in three different styles. We ranked them from #1 to #3 in taste.

  • La Nena cafè is in Gracia neighborhood which used to be a separate village and still maintains the vibe after being merged into the city of Barcelona. This café had great ratings and packed with locals but our family voted it at #3 on churro. I loved my vegan sandwich and the family vibe of the café. They even had shelves full of board games on all the walls.

Churros at La Nena cafè in Gracia neighborhood

  • Our WithLocals Food Tour in Gothic quarter took us to the most famous and authentic churros. The churros were in the ‘independent’ Catalonia ribbon shape. They were not as piping hot because the place that makes it was closed for siesta and we ate at a nearby café that stocks the churros when the churros makers go on siesta. The chocolate was the best of the three we tried and the churros came at #2 .

Churros at Petritxol in Gothic quarters

  • Xurreria San Romàn across from Sagrada Familia. This one didn’t have the best ratings on TripAdvisor and one couldn’t possibly expect good churros by the main monument of Barcelona. They had a large variety of plain and stuffed churros, right from their kitchen. In the end, I was quite surprised when it was voted at #1 of 3 by our family.

Churros at Xurreria San Romàn across from Sagrada Familia

We had gelato recommendations in our food list and we saw several more as we walked around. But it was too cold and we were too full to eat any more.

People of Barcelona are very specific about where they buy simple staples like their daily bread. We saw a bakery in every square but people get very specific about the bakery they buy their bread from. It reminded me of bakeries from my Paris trip .

It turns out that Praktik bakery, which we had been visiting in our neighborhood is one of the best. No wonder their croissants, baguettes, olive bread, seed bread, baguette sandwiches, and pastries were amazing.

Praktik Bakery Kitchen in Barcelona has the best bread and baked goods

Like in Portugal , people in Barcelona are very protective of their coffee. We did see some Starbucks but I’m not sure how it compares to the Portuguese regulations on coffee prices.

Catalonians love their local coffee ground right in Barcelona. Our guide’s favorite coffee shop has been roasting and grinding coffee of generations. The family still works in the coffee shop, while they’ve also opened a café in recent years.

Mag by El Magnifico Coffee Shop, best coffee in Barcelona

As we started planning for our trip to Barcelona, we were thrilled to hear that Barcelona has a thriving vegan food scene. In addition to the traditional dishes of Catalonia, there is plenty of international and innovative food in Barcelona.

Like the surprise pizza place in Windhoek, Namibia , restaurants in Barcelona had innovative pizzas with interesting toppings and gourmet of bases made with ancient grains and spelt flour. They all have vegan and gluten-free options.

Mushroom pizza with truffle sauce at Don Kilo in L'Eixample

The vegan Lasagna in Teresa Carles was nothing like a regular lasagna. The noodle was made from ancient grains. The layers had scrumptious sauces and vegetables.

A lasagna in name but treat in its own right at Teresa Carles in barcelona

Some vegan restaurants serve raw vegan desserts like the delicious Tiramisu we had in BarCelonate.

A raw vegan tiramisu in BarCelonate, Barcelona

As we travel across the world such as Italy , Portugal . Malta , Colorado , Sedona , Southern Africa , Canada , Turkey , etc. we see increasing selections of vegan and vegetarian foods that are scrumptious, adventurous, local and authentic. To my delight, the vegan revolution is making travel so much more fun as a vegetarian. It’s exciting to see how easy it’s becoming to travel as a vegetarian or vegan .

Lists of Places to Eat Vegan/Vegetarian

We started our list of restaurants well in advance and added all recommendations as we got them. Here’s a list for you

  • Golfo de Bizkaia
  • Euskal Etxea
  • Teresa Carles is a vegetarian restaurant but can make nearly anything vegan too. We ate here twice. One time we came here for a quick bite and loved it. Later we returned for their special New Year’s Eve set dinner. The same owner has a fully vegan restaurant (Flex & Kale) too.
  • Don Kilo is a very popular pizza place in L’Eixample neighborhood and it didn’t disappoint.
  • La Nena cafè in Gracia neighborhood
  • Xurreria San Romàn across from Sagrada Familia
  • Petritxol in Gothic quarters
  • Praktik Bakery in l’Exemplaire neighborhood.
  • El Magnifico Coffee Shop is the oldest and best coffee in Barcelona
  • Montserrat village and Fresh Food Markets were a great source of ingredients to prepare meals in our 2 bedroom Airbnb with a full kitchen.
  • Mood Sensorial restaurant is not in Spain but we loved the food on our day trip to Andorra.

New Year's eve dinner in Barcelona at Teresa Carles

For the last few seconds leading up to the stroke of midnight, people of Barcelona, eat a grape for every second. The restaurant gave a little bag for each of us to eat with the countdown to 2020.

New Years Grapes in Barcelona

We curated a list of restaurants from TripAdvisor recommendations, our guide, and my trusted friend Wendy of Nomadic Vegan

  • Flax and Kale multiple locations in Barcelona. It is by the same owner as Teresa Carles but Flex & Kale is an all-vegan restaurant.
  • Brunch and Cake is a vegan restaurant recommended by our guide. She loves their vegan quinoa burgers.
  • Veg World India
  • Maoz Barcelona
  • Odacova (breakfast)
  • The Green Spot

I learned that people of Barcelona are generally food snobs (I mean it in a very admiring way). They eat fresh food brought from the many markets that procure produce directly from farmers, where feasible. Every neighborhood has a fresh food market. I heard that are some 40 markets in Barcelona city. You must visit a few on any trip. Here is a list of some popular food markets –

  • La Boqueria Market
  • Santa Caterina Market
  • Sant Antoni Market
  • L’Abaceria Central Market
  • Sants Market
  • Sant Galvany Market
  • El Ninot Market
  • La Barceloneta Market
  • Barcelona Hip Food Market
  • La Concepció market

During the holidays, the markets of Barcelona were all decked up. Everyone heads to the markets for the feast on January 6th, which is when the children get gifts and families feast, as we do on Christmas in the US.

A nativity scene put together by the vendors in Santa Caterina Market of Barcelona.

The narrow streets of Barcelona were decked up too. They change the decorations for different festivals, seasons and friendly neighborhood competitions throughout the year.

Streets of Barcelona are all decked up for the holidays.

We loved Barcelona for its architecture, culture, and food. You will too. If you visit, please do share your findings and together let’s help promote healthy eating that’s also good for the planet.

Thanks, Carol for stopping by! It’s wonderful to hear that you liked the Barcelona food information and pictures.

Finding vegetarian or vegan food in Europe is not as easy as it is in the USA. But some cities in Europe are waking up especially the ones high on the travelers. Thanks for sharing this awesome guide, Jyoti. Yet to visit Barcelona and I’m sure I can use this post of yours to my benefit.

Jyoti February 5, 2020 @ 6:42 am

It’s awesome how global travel and travelers are bringing change to the food culture of Barcelona, while keeping the authentic local flavors. If more travelers prioritize local food experience while eating vegetarian food, it’s a win-win situation for culture, tradition and Mother Earth.

Cynthia Mackintosh February 5, 2020 @ 5:10 am

I’m sure with so many delicious & colorful food choices, leaving beef behind doesn’t get missed while in Barcelona. I’ve never been to Spain, but that is high on my list because my ancestors are from there. In fact, my great-grandparents were born there. I know a lot of the ingredients because in Costa Rica where my parents & grandparents are from we cooked with them. In Spain, however, it’s the same ingredients, but it’s all about the way they are prepared & cooked.

Jyoti February 5, 2020 @ 6:36 am

Hi Cynthia, that’s so cool to see how good culture, traditions and ingredients travel with space and time. It would to see the evolution of the Spanish ingredients and cooking styles for 1: your great grandparents to your kids generation 2: within Spain from that time to the kids generation now. It would be fascinating to compare and contrast the Spanish food cultures.

Sage February 5, 2020 @ 3:31 pm

I follow a pesceterian diet. So while I am typically okay with all of the fish and seafood in paella, I don’t eat chicken, beef, or pork. Everything you tried (and photographed) looked AMAZING!

Jordin February 5, 2020 @ 6:38 pm

I LOVE food tours! Your tour looks amazing with excellent food options as well as sightseeing. I am not vegan or vegetarian, but with these foods I wouldn’t mind giving up meat. This food tour showed a great way to explore Barcelona.

You are making my mouth water! We’ve been to a few places in Spain and have been able to sample some of these foods. But, Barcelona is still on our list. I love the market offerings you featured here. And, I’d love to try the vegetarian pallela as I don’t eat seafood!

Sharon February 6, 2020 @ 8:23 am

What a pleasure to read an entire, in-depth post featuring yummy-looking vegetarian food! Sometimes I feel “weird” for not eating meat, but not on your website!! I could live on cheese, nuts, and olives. You found so much good food in Barcelona!

Yukti Agrawal February 6, 2020 @ 8:28 am

Being vegetarian, I love all the suggestions given by you for Barcelona and it would be great to try some delicious Spanish food here. Going for food tour is always my favorite thing to do as through food, we can know the city well. Tomato bread looks something very unique and I missed it during my Barcelona visit. Polento mushroom tapas too looks very exotic vegetarian. After reading this, who can now say that vegetarian food is boring.

Jackie February 6, 2020 @ 9:24 am

I am drooling…Though not a Vegetarian or Vegan, I am a foodie for sure! I would be thrilled to sample each and every one of these delicious Spanish dishes. I think a food tour like WithLocals Samplers is the way to go, offering the opportunity to try so many bites at locally reputable places. It would be hard for me to pick a favorite from all these tasty options, but perhaps it might be the Vegetarian pintxo? It would be fun to try those foods traditionally thought of as Italian, like the Lasagna and Bruschetta, too. I can’t decide! A big “yum” to all!

Laura February 6, 2020 @ 7:25 pm

Wow, my mouth is watering just looking at the pictures and reading the descriptions! I can never say no to mushroom truffle pizza, yum! I have been to Barcelona a number of times and did my first food tour on my last trip there. It is such a great way to experience a city and I love hearing about all these vegan and vegetarian options that are available. Thanks for the great resource!

Tiffany from Mommy And Me Travels February 7, 2020 @ 1:51 pm

We love tapas. During our visit to Barcelona it was great getting to try all of the different types of tapas available, both vegetarian and non-vegetarian. We will be adding a lot of these restaurants to our next visit as your pictures look delicious.

Hi, vegan barcelona spanish food is tasty and delicious. thanks for sharing this article.

Elouise P Smith October 8, 2020 @ 12:10 am

Thank you for sharing blog. I hope your opinion will help me in Barcelona. Well, which foods are very tasty in that place? I hope I get the answer!! And take love..

Jyoti October 10, 2020 @ 2:01 pm

Hi Elouise, we love trying local foods and all the foods we’ve mentioned are delicious. If you’re Barcelona, I’d say try some pintxos, even if its just for the culture because its rare to find vegan pintxos. Otherwise, I’d recommend vegan paella which are quite easy to find.

Elouise P Smith October 10, 2020 @ 10:34 pm

Thanks for your great reply!!

14 Best Vegetarian Restaurants in Barcelona + Vegan Options

vegetables at a top vegetarian restaurant in barcelona

The best vegetarian restaurants in Barcelona have really taken off recently. And even I must confess, they’ve managed to rope in stubborn meat-eaters like myself: guilty as charged.

Let’s take a little tour through Barcelona vegetarian restaurants and see what grub greatness this city has up its sleeve

Here’s my Barcelona vegetarian restaurant list!

Best Vegetarian Restaurants in Barcelona

vegetarian food tour barcelona

Area:  Eixample   |   Carrer d’Aribau 125   |  Metro: Diagonal  |   Website

This delicious  gourmet tapas restaurant  famous for ‘ new classics ‘ gets to the top of the list because most of my vegetarian readers want a balance of Spanish tradition and contemporary style .

Vegetarian in Barcelona? You’ll love the vegetable ceviche , couscous with coriander oil, asparagus meatballs, and vegan tacos . It’s also the first vegetarian restaurant in Barcelona to use Beyond Meat .

You can book a table and order à la carte using the button below:

L’Hortet

Area: El Raval   |   Carrer del Pintor Fortuny 32 | Metro: Liceu (L3) | Website

Like eating straight out of a garden, this pearl of Raval unites top-quality produce with innovative and healthy cuisine. The  €11.35 set menu at lunch is some of the best value vegetarian-friendly food in Barcelona.

In low season the soup of the day  is always spot on, while during the summer, I opt for the salad bar buffet . Some highlights here are the nachos , frittatas, and cheese croquettes.

The 7.5% sweet potato beer is also something for adventurous diners.

🥘 Looking for food + history + wine + fun? Take one of Barcelona’s best food tours .

vegetarian food tour barcelona

Area: Eixample | Carrer Roger de Flor 216 | Metro: Verdaguer (L4, L5) | Website

Arc Iris was the first vegetarian restaurant in Barcelona . And what’s more, this legendary establishment is located within the Eixample Dret, making it one of the top vegetarian restaurants near Sagrada Familia .

Since 1980 they’ve been cooking vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free dishes with love and a touch of ingenuity , offering traditional recipes adapted to the vegetarian world.

They are open from Monday to Saturday from 1 pm to 4 pm and offer a 3-course menu and dessert . The vibe is very relaxing, you will find families or young foodies in equal numbers. Booking is recommended by calling +34 93 458 22 83.

🍷 Want to sample the best local wines ? Book one of Barcelona’s best wine tours from €30.00.

Ale & Hop

Area: El Born |   Basses de Sant Pere 10a | Metro: Arc de Triomf (L1) | Website

Though technically a bar, it made the list because, in addition to serving excellent craft beers, they offer exclusively vegetarian cuisine. So combine some great beers with some light and delicious dishes prepared using seasonal vegetables harvested in the Catalan countryside .

Me and my brother had an IPA, a great vegetarian lasagna , and some tasty guacamole with chips. Whether it’s for the location (the square outside is beautiful) or the genius combination of craft beer with vegetarian food, this place has become a favourite.

Area: El Gotico |   Calle Escudellers 54 | Metro: Liceu or Drassanes (L3) | Website

Despite being a small chain, the philosophy of Vegetalia rests on the pillars of sustainability and respect for the land. The result is easily one of the best vegetarian restaurants in Barcelona.

It’s all about the simplicity and freshness of the vegetables which come from nearby Montserrat, a hilly area just a stone’s throw from Barcelona. I recommend the vegetable and cheese fajitas or the three-grain risotto.

At lunch, they do a €11.40 set menu , while evenings will run you €15.00 – either way, you’ll be full to the brim! One of the best value vegetarian restaurants Barcelona has to offer.

vegetarian food tour barcelona

Area: El Raval  | Carrer de Sant Antoni Abat 52 | Metro: Sant Antoni (L2) | Website

This is how veggie tapas should be done. What’s good here is the chalkboard menu of daily specials and the super-helpful staff  to help you decide. The tasting menu is also a great dinner option with creative dishes like gnocchi with beets, almond and aubergine curry , and mushroom croquettes.

This is a great vegetarian restaurant for a romantic Barcelona night out .

Cat Bar CAT

Area: El Born |   Carrer Boria 17 | Metro: Jaume I (L4) | Website

The cat-themed place is a bit young, rock n’ roll, and alternative. The friendly staff here will find the perfect craft beer or cider to pair with your vegetarian-friendly food. They say you’ll find the best veggie burgers in Barcelona .

I opted for the €8.50 Black Cat (a tasty bean patty with caramelized onion, eggplant, and garlic veganaise), and it almost made me forget about meat. Throw in a solid patatas bravas with chilli sauce and the best hummus in town, and you’re in heaven.

Vegan Tulsi Restaurant

Area: Eixample | Carrer de Consell de Cent 279 | Metro: Universitat (L1, L2) | Website

Yet another fantastic vegetarian option in the district of Eixample, the Vegan Tulsi Restaurant, has been turning heads since opening in 2020. If you’re looking for reasonably priced vegan cuisine in a pinch, this is the spot.

If you’re popping in early, they offer a fantastic array of juices, shakes and smoothies starting at just €3.50. And their extensive menu features a great mix of vegan tapas, burgers and bowls.

If you’re looking to keep it real, I’d opt for the Thali, a classic Nepali combo dish featuring basmati rice, 2 types of curried vegetables, dal, chutney, papadam and pakora.

All of that for just €10.50! Not only is it their namesake dish, but it’s also one of the best deals in the city .

Woki Organic Market

Area: Eixample |   Ronda Universitat 20 | Metro: Catalunya (various)  | Website

This Eco-friendly restaurant is found in a market where you can eat 100% organic. They make pasta, salads, quiches and much more.

The organic market with vegetables and other fresh products is found right around the restaurant tables. You might even see the chef step out of the kitchen and go grab a few eggplants, a couple of zucchini, and an onion.

Though the place is a little pricey, you generally get what you pay for. And that is quality. They do takeaway, and you can even just go in to get some fruit or a smoothie.

vegetarian food tour barcelona

Area: El Gotico |   Carrer Palau 5 | Metro: Jaume I (L4) | Website

Located in the heart of the Gothic Quarter, this is the only Barcelona vegetarian restaurant to call itself a bistrot . A good place for refined, curious palates . You’ll find innovative veggie tapas here and an impressive dinner menu.

For those who say that meat has more flavour? They probably haven’t been to Rasoterra. The dishes are prepared using seasonal vegetables and a strictly 10-mile diet.

They also have a good selection of organic Catalan wines . You’ll spend around 30-35 euros a couple.

Samsara by Arc Iris

Area: Barceloneta  |  Carrer de Guítert 58 | Metro: Barceloneta (L4) | Website

Not to be confused with the now-shuttered Samsara in Gracia, this Barceloneta vegetarian hotspot is renowned for its brunch, specialty coffee and lunch menu . This makes it perfect for vegetarians and vegans looking to pair a meal with a trip to the beach on a lazy weekend afternoon.

The restaurant currently boasts a staggering 4.8 stars on Google , with close to 200 reviews – so you know you’re in for a treat. My fave was the eggs benedict with vegan jamon , which is a delectable Catalan take on a breakfast classic.

Plus, this beach-side restaurant benefits from the culinary pedigree of the legendary Arc de Iris restaurant in Eixample. So how can you lose?

Quinoa Bar Vegetaria

Area: Gracia  | Travessera de Gràcia 203 | Metro: Jaume I (L4) | Website

This small and charming restaurant, with its old-school decor, makes honest and rustic food . They specialize in salads, quiches, and veggie burgers of the utmost quality and freshness.

With €10.00-€13.00, you’ll get a great feed with delicious fruit or vegetable smoothies .

If you’re looking to eat at your Barcelona apartment  or can’t find a seat, they even have takeaway. I also suggest taking your delicious vegetarian meal to the tree-lined street on Passeig de Sant Joan.

Teresa Carles

Area: Raval |   Carrer Jovellanos 2 | Metro: Catalunya (L3, L1) | Website

I still haven’t been to this place, but my friend Pedro is forcing me to put it on the list. It’s one of the most reviewed Barcelona vegetarian restaurants, and as such, it’s highly recommended to book in advance.

It is a restaurant for extremely refined vegetarian-friendly palates; be prepared to spend about €30.00-€35.00. Even Pedro, a self-confessed steak guy, swears by this place, so there must be a rhyme to his reason!

The breakfast and brunch are highly recommended, as well as the artisan pasta .

Bubita Sangria Bar

Area: El Born |  Carrer dels Flassaders 70 | Metro: Jaume I (L4) | Website

Near the centre of Barcelona’s Born district is this vegetarian tapas bar famous for having an entire menu dedicated to different types of sangria . Need I say more? They also have a Barceloneta location, but unfortunately, it is temporarily closed.

This is the perfect summer pit stop after a day at the Picasso Museum or the Museu MOCO . The aperitivo offerings here should be obligatory. What takes the place to a whole new level, though, is their delicious paella .

I really enjoyed the guacamole made with edamame, and the vegan prawns almost fooled this meat eater! 😉

Vegetarian restaurants in Barcelona

Aguaribay

  • El Poblenou
  • price 1 of 4

At this trendy spot, it’s easy to forget that you’re even in a vegetarian restaurant. Soggy tofu and wilted greens are nowhere to be found, and healthy, inventive dishes abound. We’re talking hearty wraps, fresh roasted veggies, handmade pastas and veggie-forward soups as well as yummy tapas. Aguaribay also has a carefully curated selection of beer and wine, so you can feel like you’re indulging even when there’s no meat on the table.

Teresa Carles

Teresa Carles

  • price 2 of 4

This charming spot is set apart by their unique menu. Most of their dishes are a mix of traditional Catalan fare and haute-cuisine technique which makes for a truly wonderful dining experience. Don’t forget to wash everything down with a glass (or two) of something from the formidable wine list.

Rasoterra

  • price 3 of 4

This phenomenal vegetarian restaurant, owned by the creators of Slow Food Barcelona, is open for lunch and dinner. At noon they have an affordable menu with soups and dishes that stray from the predictable vegetarian trope. At night they serve homemade pasta dishes and international delicacies that pair nicely with the wine and craft beer. With all this variety under one roof, there’s no way you’ll grow tired of dining at Rasoterra.

Flax & Kale

Flax & Kale

  • Haute cuisine

At this healthy hotspot, you can find raw foods, vegan options and gluten-free dishes along with ‘flexitarian’ creations containing lots of veggies and small amounts of animal protein. The menu also boasts cold pressed juices from fresh fruits and vegetables. Whether you visit for lunch, dinner or weekend brunch, you’ll leave Flax & Kale feeling full and plant-powered.

The Green Spot

The Green Spot

The owners of The Green Spot set out with the goal of creating a a restaurant for everyone – not just vegetarians. With this in mind, this spot focuses more on featuring vegetables than calling the itself 'vegetarian'. The international recipes incorporate tons of fresh produce, and everything you’ll find is flavourful, fun and made from legumes, seeds, nuts and herbs.

Macrobiotic Zen

Macrobiotic Zen

Entering Macrobiotic Zen feels like stepping into another world – a veggie-filled, peaceful haven. You choose between five main ingredients to create your own culinary adventure. No matter which direction you head in, everything on the menu is vegan and macrobiotic and can be combined in different ways.

L'Hortet

This classic institution has been a Raval staple for over two decades. People flock here to enjoy traditional vegetarian dishes and vegan options all made with the freshest produce. Additionally –thanks to the varied clientele – you’ll always get your meal at L'Hortet with a delicious side of people-watching.

Biocenter

Biocenter has been going strong for 30 years. When you enter you have the feeling that it's not a restaurant that's just for vegetarians, but for anyone who wants to eat well, with generous portions and healthy options at an incredibly good price. Flax & Kale Passage

Flax & Kale Passage

  • Sant Pere, Santa Caterina i la Ribera

The third location of Flax & Kale is truly a wonder to behold. Two rooms frame a pizza oven that churns out burbling Neapolitan pies, but don’t fret – the people behind this iteration of the healthfood staple are just as committed to creating gut-friendly dishes as they are to experimenting with the perfect chewy pizza crust.

Amaltea

One of the first vegetarian restaurants in Barcelona, Amaltea has something for every veggie enthusiast. The big space is usually full thanks to the menu’s variety, so head over and see what all the fuss is about.

Cat Bar

  • 4 out of 5 stars

This punk restaurant-bar serves up a killer veggie burger and trendy craft beers. We really couldn’t give you a better recommendation for an all-day spot with unmatched, casual vegan vibes.

La Vitamínica d'Horta

La Vitamínica d'Horta

  • Mediterranean
  • Horta - Guinardó

This isn’t the kind of place where your veggie plate is served with a side of moral preaching on the environmental or health attributes of vegetarianism. The team behind La Vitamínica certainly cares about plant-based diets, but part of their bar also serves up omnivore-friendly sandwiches. This is a restaurant where anyone – meat-eater or not – can incorporate some more veggies into their life.

Vegetalia (Gòtic)

Vegetalia (Gòtic)

What started as a business dedicated to producing natural, organic vegetarian food has transformed into two of Barcelona’s favorite restaurants. For €20 you can sample a whole range of tasty, imaginative dishes, some of them vegan. And don’t leave without sampling one of the beatiful cakes displayed at the front – they taste as good as they look.

Govinda

A vegetarian Indian restaurant without a drop of alcohol on the menu isn’t exactly what many people think of when they think of the Barcelona food scene, but don’t use that logic to dismiss Govinda. Since the 1980s, they’ve been providing Barcelona with hearty Indian cuisine, pizzas and a formidable salad bar. Go with a lot of friends or when you’ve worked up a real appetite, as portions are generous.

Brunch InterContinental

Brunch InterContinental

They say good things come to those who wait, and that's exactly the case with the brunch at Arrel restaurant , located on the ground floor of the InterContinental Hotel : you can only enjoy it once a month! This brunch arrived in Barcelona with very high expectations – in Madrid it's famous for being one of the best –and luckily we weren’t dissapointed. For €75, everything is included (food, drinks, and coffee, the works) and you choose from 20 options plus dessert. Start with Iberian ham, oysters and salted prawns, continue with lobster eggs, and finish by trying dishes like glazed veal gigot, cep mushroom risotto served in a wheel of parmesan, or the romesco sauce with monkfish, squid and prawns. The dessert section deserves its own encyclopedia. Go there hungry.

Eat My Trip

Eat My Trip

Eat My Trip is one of the hottest breakfast spots in town, serving up sweet and savoury all-day delights. Sample ‘American waffles ’ (which happen to be both sweet and savoury) or an amazing ‘Guacascramble ’ that also includes salmon tartare. Try eggs Benedict with a Thai touch (panang sauce), salad bowls and smoothie bowls, and homemade desserts. To drink, try one of their special lattes.

Solc Brunch

Solc Brunch

You’re in good hands at Solc , where vegetables come from its own garden in Maresme, its meats from local producers, and its fish from Barcelona’s fish market. But the brunch is something special, featuring dishes and flavours from the early 20th century with modern techniques. It’s €65 per adult, €23 for kids, every Sunday from 12:30 to 16:30. You won’t regret it.

Don’t be fooled by the unassuming decor at Auto Rosellon. The keep it simple and they make great food. As part of their excellent brunch menu, you might choose the Nordic scrambled eggs with cured salmon, crème fraîche and dill (all the egg dishes are out of this world, and all made with organic eggs), or maybe you’re in the mood for a bowl of granola with home-made Greek yogurt and organic fruit, or perhaps some toast with home-made jam. If you’re feeling frisky, get a brunchy cocktail, like a Bloody Mary, Mimosa, Kir Royale or Bellini. This is quality food with an eco-friendly attitude.

Federal Cafè

Federal Cafè

  • Sant Antoni

Federal Cafè is done up in a style befitting the trendiest, most cosmopolitan of cities. Natural light, tasteful decor, good music, fast and friendly service, and a menu specialising in breakfasts that can resuscitate you after a night of overdoing it: juices and smoothies, eggs and sausages, fruit and sandwiches... Federal was one of the pioneers on the brunch scene in Barcelona, and it ’s  still living up to and surpassing expectations.

Fat Schmuck

Fat Schmuck

Fat Schmuck started as a bar but is now serves up a delicious American brunch with southern influences, from two guys that constantly find themselves at the top of best bars list.  Here you’ll find a private terrace, vintage interiors and a late 80s gangsta-rap soundtrack. Their famous waffles with fried chicken, or pancakes with shredded duck confit and hoisin sauce, are like their cocktails: top-notch, with a touch of brilliance and reasonable prices.

Can Dendê

Specialising in brunch, Can Dendê serves up four different versions of eggs Benedict, sweet or savoury pancakes, and deli items for lunch that are simple yet exquisitely made, like pulled pork sandwiches with pork that’s marinated for hours before it’s grilled. You’ll also find a few Brazilian dishes from chef Patricia Leona’s country of origin.

Dopietta

Dopietta is right next to Benzina, one of the best – and coolest – Italian spots in Barcelona, and they're under the same ownership. Dopietta is an updated version of the ‘salumeria’, the Italian delicatessen shop, featuring cheeses and cold cuts (some of them homemade!). On weekends, you'll find their version of brunch, which could be seen as a spin-off of the Italian aperitivo served at midday. Every Saturday and Sunday there’s a buffet of cold cuts, pastas and an aperitif cocktail. We know what you’re thinking, but it’s brunch, okay? Because they say so.

Flaherty’s Irish Bar

Flaherty’s Irish Bar

The offering at Flaherty’s isn’t a brunch per se, but they ’ve got some breakfast items on the menu served until 3pm every day and some served until 7pm for those who get a late start. Your traditional Irish breakfast includes Irish bacon and sausages, a fried egg, baked beans, black pudding, hash browns, grilled mushrooms, white pudding, slow-roasted tomatoes and toast. And that is all for less than a tenner! There are also creative vegetarian and vegan options (meaning they don’t just scrape off the meat!). Until 3pm you can get eggs Benedict, chorizo baked eggs, sweet and savoury waffle, and more.

Ugot

Ugot (which means ‘cakes’ in Hebrew) owner Adi Nachson is proud that her ‘bruncherie’ has grown without losing its heart and soul. Now serving some of the best eggs in Barcelona, Ugot offers five versions of eggs Benedict – the ones atop shredded pork and their version of French toast are heavenly – and five other hearty options. Other featured options include omelettes and soups, and you can also get tapas, salads, burgers, and cakes that are out of this world.

La Desayunería

La Desayunería

The concept was to serve breakfast all day but gear the idea toward locals. And so they’ve become a staple in the Sant Antoni neighbourhood, with even the grannies having learnt to order pancakes with their cup of ‘suizo’ chocolate. The menu can make you dizzy, featuring pretty much everything you can imagine served in a diner, using local Catalan products. We’re still dreaming about the Manchito’s tail: their version of French toast with scrambled egg and cheddar, and ridiculously crispy bacon. Take your time drooling over the pancake menu – there are nearly a dozen and a half types to choose from.

Baldomero

Baldomero defines itself as a country house in the middle of the city, and the description is spot on. You step into a bright space with high ceilings that feels like a farmhouse: in other words, a restaurant in a former parking lot in Eixample (so called because the owner, Baldomero , was a bon vivant, one of the first to own a Mercedes in Barcelona). During the week, there's a fabulous Mediterranean lunch menu (the pistachio cake and low-temperature lamb are the star dishes) available from Monday to Friday. On weekends, they offer a lavish brunch with all-you-can-eat options for €35.

Picnic

Picnic’s brunch is already known as the best place to recover from a night out on the town with its eggs Benedict and an ace cocktail selection. Since Tara and Jaime opened the space in the first half of the 2000s, the tradition of an American-style brunch has become a favourite in Barcelona, and you can dig into other scrumptious fare like pancakes or huevos rancheros as well. Plus, outside of brunch and depending on the season, you can gobble up dishes such as pork ribs with mashed potatoes, a New Orleans–inspired gumbo, or lighter options like ceviche.

Norte

Three friends who graduated in philosophy, journalism and art history have turned a corner bar into a delicious miniature restaurant, where they rework and update classic dishes from Basque and Galician cuisine. Stop by on Saturday mornings and try their brunch menu, which includes toast and home-made jam that has become a reason to make the pilgrimage.

Green Vita Healthy Coffee & Brunch

Green Vita Healthy Coffee & Brunch

Green Vita is exactly what you‘d expect: no processed foods, artificial additives or frying, just real, fresh, whole, and organic ingredients. For brunch, tuck into eggs, potatoes and truffled mushrooms, Korean tacos, salads and more. To drink, grab a fresh juice or a smoothie, and a very nice coffee. If you‘ve been over-indulging somewhat, this is the spot you need.

Milk

You’ve got to respect this powerhouse that opened in 2005 as one of the city’s brunch pioneers and has never lowered its standards. They serve brunch every day of the week from 9am to 4.30pm, and the impressive repertoire includes four different versions of eggs Benedict, bagels, a selection of pancakes, Turkish eggs, chorizo hash, huevos rancheros, gourmet burgers and more. Plus, you are sitting in a bar, so don’t forget to order a brunch cocktail. And if you’re not feeling up for that, try a smoothie.

Elsa y Fred

Elsa y Fred

Elsa y Fred have reinvented the classic tapas bar with creative and signature cuisine, making it one of the most visited spots in the area. But their brunch is something to shout about, served every weekday from 9am to 1pm and weekends from 9am to 4pm. The menu features eggs benedict, scrambled eggs, shakshuka and English breakfast (also available vegan).

Trópico

  • Latin American

Trópico was made famous for its beautiful, light-filled space, but now people have caught on to its brunch offering. Here you’ll find everything from impeccable eggs benedict and pancakes to huevos rancheros and açaí na tigela, a Brazilian bowl with hearts of palm ice cream, fruit, chia and homemade granola. Our favourite? The arepas stuffed with huevos pericos  (scrambled eggs with tomato, onion and mozzarella) and avocado.

Caravelle

The duo from Australia and England who own this minimalist place define it as a gastropub. Here you can find delicious and original recipes with British, Italian and Catalan influences. They serve up good breakfasts in sweet or savoury options, as well as imaginative dishes like the American-style fried rabbit. There are excellent home-made desserts to satisfy your sweet tooth. And really, you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu, from confit ribs grilled over low heat to the now-ubiquitous healthy poke bowls packed with raw fish and 10,000 other ingredients.

Barcino Food

Barcino Food

Barcino Food takes its speciality (brunch) very seriously. There aren’t many brunch restaurants in Barcelona that operate every day of the week, but this spot is committed to the cause. Find acai bowls and yogurt with fruit and granola, burgers, bagels and eggs benedict, and don’t sleep on the homemade pastries. Oh, and try a ‘poptail’, a fusion of cocktail and popsicle (can be alcoholic or not).

12 Best Barcelona Food Tours

By: Author Hannah Cooper

12 Best Barcelona Food Tours

Never mind the museums and churches, the best Barcelona food tours are reason alone to travel to Spain’s coastal city.

Barcelonian cuisine is inspired by Catalonia and other Spanish regions. Restaurants and markets reflect the season but you can rest assured that seafood, cured meats, and cheeses are available year-round in the city.

Most Barcelona food tours focus on tapas and pintxos (appetizers served on bread) while wine is usually included in the package. This post has the inside scoop on the top-rated tapas and wine tours in Barcelona.

Best Barcelona Food Tours

As Barcelonian and Catalan food revolves heavily around meat, fish, and cheese, the majority of the tours are unsuitable for vegans. However, most operators are able to accommodate vegetarians provided you make a dietary note at the time of booking.

This guide will match you with the best food tour in Barcelona according to your tastes, budget, and travel itinerary.

1. Barcelona Tapas Walking Tour with Food, Wine, and History

Taste the best of Catalan cuisine on this Tapas Walking Tour with Food, Wine, and History . It’s a three-hour tour focused on gastronomy and the cultural history of the city and Catalonia.

The excursion is headed up by a local guide who is well-versed in history and gastronomy and will be happy to answer any questions.

This walking food tour of Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter is easily accessible from central hotels. The itinerary covers four bars where you will share tapas dishes and sample a mix of wine, cava, and vermouth. In addition, you’ll score an explanation of how to make your own sangria back home.

Open to solo travelers as well as couples and groups and at a great price, it’s a solid all-rounder.

Price: from $62 per person

Duration: 3 hours

Departure time: 2.15 p.m. or 7 p.m.

Best Barcelona food tour for: Overall experience

Book the tour here on GetYourGuide.com

Explore the history and architecture, as well as the food around Barcelona.

2. Tapas and Wine Walking Tour in Barcelona with Optional Flamenco

This Tapas and Wine Experience Small-Group Walking Tour gives you the choice of a lunch or dinner slot. It’s slightly costlier than the average tapas and wine tour in Barcelona although that’s reflected in the amount of food you receive. Consider this a full meal!

Either way, you will visit four tapas taverns in the Gothic Quarter and El Born quarters. At each, you will try a variety of meat, cheese, fish, and bread tapas plates as well as a glass of premium wine.

By choosing the evening tour, you also have the option to tap on a flamenco performance. This requires advance booking although you’ll pay the venue for the show. Upgrading makes this one of the best Barcelona food tours for an all-around cultural experience.

Price: from $102 per person

Duration: 3-4 hours

Departure time: 11 a.m. or 6 p.m.

Explore one of the many markets around Barcelona, both with a tour and on your own!

3. Street Food and Sightseeing in Barcelona with a Market Visit

The Street Food and Sightseeing Tour takes place in and around Mercat de la Boqueria off La Rambla.

Your guide will steer you around the vendors while sharing tips, tricks, and recipes about Barcelonian and Catalan food. Along the way, you’ll stop off at a traditional family-run stall. This is where you’ll sample a mix of jámon, cheese, patatas bravas, and pastries – or vegetarian tapa.

At a low price point, this is the best walking food tour in Barcelona on a budget. This tour does require a minimum booking of two people per party and drinks are not included. The market is also one of the best free things to do in Barcelona that you can explore independently.

Price: from $20 per person

Duration: 2.5 hours

Departure time: 11.30 a.m.

Best Barcelona food tour for: Local experience, budget travelers

No Barcelona food tour would be complete without tasting some Iberico ham!

4. Barcelona Electric Bike Small Group Tour with Tapas and Wine Tasting

One of the best Barcelona food tours for adventurous foodies, the Electric Bike Small Group Tour takes place via a fleet of two-wheelers. Fortunately, these bikes save you from having to pedal too much when you have a belly full of cheese.

The route covers El Born, Barceloneta Port, and Ciutadella Park. Stops are designed to show you the sights in between ducking into four different tavern bars and wine cellars. Main roads are avoided as much as possible and you’ll steer clear of congested streets.

Getting around on an e-bike means you cover far more ground compared to a walking tour. Therefore, it’s a clever way to maximize your Barcelona itinerary and see a bit of the coastline. Before you set off, your guide will explain how to use the bikes while helmets are provided for safety.

Price: from $70 per person

Duration: 3.5 hours

Departure time: 4 p.m.

Best Barcelona food tour for: Outdoorsy travelers, covering a lot of ground

Sample tapas and vermut on one of many Barcelona food tours.

5. Vegan Tapas Walking Tour in Barcelona

The El Born Vegan Tapas Tour is the only dedicated walking food tour in Barcelona for plant-based travelers (or the vegan-curious).

It takes place in the historic center with stops at markets and taverns where you will eat vegan tapas.

The guide will provide insight into ingredients used in Barcelonian, Catalan, and Spanish cooking that are available to vegans and vegetarians. A glass of kombucha, vermouth, and one other alcoholic (beer or wine) or non-alcoholic drink is included in the price.

Before the activity culminates, you’ll receive a PDF guide to eating plant-based in Barcelona. This covers restaurants with vegan menus as well as general tips that might inspire you to cook a meat-free Catalan feast back home. This is a small group tour capped at six pax.

Price: from $80 per person

Departure time: 12 p.m.

Best Barcelona food tour for: Vegans and vegan-curious travelers

Sometimes there is nothing better than a cold glass of vermut and a bowl full of delicious Spanish olives.

6. Tipsy Tapas Food Crawl Walking Tour with Tastings

The Tipsy Tapas Food Crawl Walking Tour with Tastings is the best tapas tour in Barcelona’s El Born quarter. It’s an evening tour for social travelers – solo explorers and couples alike.

The route takes you to taverns in this trendy neighborhood where you’ll taste a mix of traditional and modern tapas. While you tuck in, your guide will dish the details about Catalan cuisine and explain how it has evolved over the decades. All plates are paired with wine, beer, and/or cava.

There may also be a couple of shots on the agenda, so wear your party shoes and consider this the gateway to a lively night in Barcelona.

Departure time: 5 p.m.

Best Barcelona food tour for: Socializing and nightlife

The seafood in Barcelona should not be missed.

7. Secret Food Tour in Barcelona

The walking food tour in Barcelona by Secret Food Tours is an in-depth study of the city’s history, culture, and cuisine. Foodie stops include an ancient Catalan bakery, a market, a tapas bar, and a paella restaurant overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.

As well as the typical plates of cured ham and regional cheeses, you’ll sample a “surprise” dish. All tours include wine tastings although it’s possible to add the upgraded drinks package to your booking.

Sunday tours differ slightly as they focus on what a Barcelonian family would usually eat when gathering over the weekend.

These tours start with breakfast churros before heading to a restaurant for seafood tapas and culminating over stew, calçots (green onions), and wine from a porrón (wine pitcher). If you happen to be in town over a weekend, this is one of the best Barcelona food tours for a unique culinary experience.

Price: from $94 per person

Duration: 3-3.5 hours

Departure time: 10.30 a.m. or 11 a.m.

Best Barcelona food tour for: Traditional cuisine and culture

Book the tour here on SecretFoodTours.com

Be sure to try one of the most famous tapa in Spain, a gilda!

8. Paella Cooking Experience and Boqueria Market Tour

This paella masterclass is one of the best Barcelona food tours for a hands-on approach. The Paella Cooking Experience and Boqueria Market Tour starts off in the city’s main market.

A professional chef will guide you through the marketplace and introduce you to the best tapa in Mercat de la Boqueria.

After that, you’ll assemble your own Basque pintxos (also known as montaditos). As you nibble at these, you’ll watch the chef cook a paella in front of you, using fresh seafood and seasonal veggies from the market. The grand finale is to divvy up the rice and dive in – while dipping sangria that you’ll have made yourself.

Although this is more of a demonstration than a traditional cooking class, the chef will call upon group members to assist at certain points. You do have a sangria mixing class though plus you’ll receive the recipes for all items made during the tour.

Price: from $69 per person

Departure time: 1 p.m., 4 p.m., or 6.45 p.m.

Best Barcelona food tour for: Travelers who love to cook

It is common to walk into a bar in Spain, perhaps a bit more common in the Basque, where you will find different snacks on top of freshly sliced bread.

9. Gourmet Tapas and Wine in Barcelona at Sunset

This sunset tapas and wine tour in Barcelona is perfect for a sociable couple or group of friends! Focusing on the El Born and Gothic Quarter areas, the Barcelona Gourmet Tapas and Wine Tour takes place at golden hour.

Starting with a cava and tapa aperitif, you’ll work through various plates at traditional and modern joints. All of these are run by a local family and provide the warmest hospitality and dining experience.

One restaurant throws a spotlight on Latin American food and lets you see how the Argentine proprietor united the cuisine of her home and adopted countries.

As one of the more luxurious tours, this one includes upscale yet casual taverns and lots of food.

Price: from $115 per person

Departure time: 5 p.m., 6 p.m., or 7 p.m. (varies based on time of year)

Best Barcelona food tour for: Couples

Book the tour here on DevourTours.com

Patatas Bravas come from Barcelona, so any good food tour will no doubt include them!

10. Barcelona Sailing Adventure: Winery Tour, Tasting, and Lunch

This is one of the best Barcelona food tours for a luxury experience. The Barcelona Sailing Adventure departs from Port Olímpic and journeys north to Alella. Once there, you’ll hop into a minivan and visit a family-run winery for a traditional Catalan lunch and wine tasting.

While you’re there, you’ll also enjoy a vineyard and cellar tour to digest your meal. It’s a bit pricey but it’s a great way to get a sense of Catalan food, visit a winery, and see Barcelona from the sea.

The journey back to Barcelona is via road although weather conditions can mean that the travel method is flipped. The tour operates all year although it only runs a couple of days a week during winter.

Price: from $128 per person

Duration: 4 hours

Departure time: 10 a.m.

Best Barcelona food tour for: Day tripping

There are so many amazing places to eat in Barcelona, a food tour of the city will allow you to sample a lot of places and a ton of different dishes in a shorter period of time.

11. Wine Tasting Experience in Barcelona

While most of the best Barcelona food tours also include wine, booking a dedicated wine experience is worth booking if you’re a wine fanatic.

This wine-tasting experience in Barcelona is affordable and short enough to squeeze into a shorter itinerary. It’s hosted by a sommelier at a gourmet wine and food store in El Born.

The package includes the tasting of five Catalan wines as well as bread and cheese-based tapas. No Barcelonian would ever drink on an empty stomach!

During the tasting, your host will explain the history of winemaking in Catalonia and the nuances of the wines.

At the end of the activity, you can purchase a bottle of wine to take back to your accommodation. However, there is absolutely no pressure to do this. The tour is available to solo travelers as well as groups and couples.

Price: from $32 per person

Duration: 1 hour

Departure time: 6 p.m.

Best Barcelona food tour for: Wine aficionados

You’ll spot this beer all over Barcelona, why not head to the brewery and see how it’s made and sample a fresh glass?

12. Estrella Damm Old Brewery Tour with Tasting

An alternative (or additional!) option to the wine tasting, the Estrella Damm Old Brewery Tour with Tasting is designed for beer drinkers.

Estrella Damm is one of the most iconic beers in Europe and it originates from Barcelona.

This guided tour takes you into the boiler room, the cooking room, and the machine room. The old brewery contains an archive of objects related to the company’s history.

The tour wraps up with a tasting of five Estrella Damm specialties. It’s located close to La Sagrada Família and makes a short, sweet, and unique addition to your Barcelona itinerary. Just remember your ID if you want to sample the brews.

Price: from $19 per person

Duration: 1.5 hours
