Your Trip to Perth: The Complete Guide

visit perth airport

Perth is the largest city on Australia's west coast and the perfect base for adventurous travelers. Surrounded by beaches, deserts, and wineries, it has a population of around 2 million people and remains one of Australia's underrated gems.

Perth is a great destination for foodies, art lovers, and outdoorsy visitors, offering whale watching, wildflower blooms, and native wildlife, plus world-class restaurants, breweries, museums, and galleries. Read on for our guide to everything you need to know for your trip to Perth.

Planning Your Trip

  • Best Time to Visit:  The best time to visit Perth is in the spring (September to November) for most travelers. Fall (March to May) is also pleasant, thanks to similarly mild temperatures , but Perth's famous wildflowers are in full bloom in spring. Summer (December to January) is peak season.
  • Language:  Australia has no official language, but English is spoken almost everywhere. Many locals also speak another language at home, like Mandarin, Cantonese, or Arabic. Noongar  is the official language of the Aboriginal people of the southwest of Western Australia.
  • Currency:  The Australian dollar is the national currency.
  • Getting Around:  Perth's buses and trains cover most of the city and are relatively easy to use. You can buy cash tickets or use a SmartRider card across the network.
  • Travel Tip:  Perth runs on Australian Western Standard Time (UTC+8) and does not use Daylight Savings, meaning it is two hours behind Sydney from April to September and three hours behind Sydney from October to March.

Things to Do

Whether you're here for the unique flora and fauna or you want to explore the urban jungle, Perth has activities for every kind of traveler. Depending on the season, you can enjoy the beautiful beaches, go for a hike, visit a museum, and get some retail therapy all in one weekend.

  • In Western Australia, more than 12,000 species of wildflowers bloom every year. The flowering season usually hits Perth in September, when Kings Park is transformed into a floral wonderland. Throughout all four seasons, Kings Park is Perth's top tourist destination, thanks to the panoramic views from the the treetop-grazing Federation Walkway .
  • You can easily spend a day exploring the port city of Fremantle, which is only 45 minutes by train from the center of Perth. Spend the morning at Bathers Beach, grab lunch at the markets , then visit Fremantle Prison to learn about Western Australia's convict history.
  • Take the ferry to Rottnest Island to meet one of its famous quokkas, a small, friendly marsupial that is arguably Australia's cutest animal. Rottnest also has 63 beaches with crystal clear waters that are ideal for snorkeling. The ferry takes around 30 to 90 minutes, depending on where you board.

Explore more of Perth's coastline with our article on the best beaches in Perth .

What to Eat and Drink

Perth is packed with incredible restaurants, cafes, and bars that make the most of the city's seafood and fresh agricultural produce. You'll find many top fine dining spots in the city center and around Elizabeth Quay, while Fremantle is known for its wine bars and trendy cafes.

The inner-city neighborhood of Northbridge is the heart of Perth's nightlife scene, with pubs, bars, and clubs open into the early hours every weekend. You can also find Perth's Chinatown here, with plenty of authentic Asian dining options and fun late-night restaurants.

Check out our complete guides to which  dishes to eat  and the  best restaurants in Perth .

Where to Stay

The Perth metropolitan area (including the neighboring port city of Fremantle) covers around 2,500 square miles with about the same population density as Houston, Texas, so we recommend staying close to the main hubs.

Most boutique and luxury hotels are concentrated along the Swan River in the Central Business District (CBD), Northbridge, and South Perth, close to all the main attractions.

Over by the ocean, Fremantle is home to quirkier and more affordable offerings, and Scarborough hosts a couple of beachside resorts that are popular with families. There are also plenty of Airbnbs throughout the city and a good selection of airport hotels.

Learn about the different neighborhoods you can stay in and our recommendations for the best hotels in this guide .

Getting There

Almost all international visitors will fly into Perth Airport (PER). It is also possible to take the Indian Pacific luxury rail service from Sydney to Perth, or drive the 2,500-mile journey across Australia. The airport is located in the east of the city, and a 20-minute taxi or ride-share service will cost around AU$43 ($25).

You can also take Bus 380 from Terminal 1 and 2 or Bus 40 from Terminal 3 and 4, which will cost around $3. Renting a car can be cost effective and convenient if you're planning on traveling more around Western Australia.

Culture and Customs

Perth is safe, modern, and welcoming to visitors. The city is located on the traditional lands of the Noongar, an Aboriginal people made up of 14 different language groups, who lived in Western Australia for at least 45,000 years prior to British colonization in 1829.

Tipping in Australia  is voluntary and usually only done at upmarket restaurants and bars (around 10 percent is standard). At hotels and with taxi drivers, feel free to tip a dollar or two if you would like to, but it's not expected. Servers and other hospitality workers receive a relatively high minimum wage, meaning tips do not make up an integral part of their income.

Money Saving Tips

Traveling in Australia is generally not cheap, and Perth is no different. You are likely to spend a large proportion of your budget on food if you plan on dining out, as well as public transport or car rental for day trips . However, it is possible to stretch your savings a little further with these tips.

  • Perth's public transport system includes a free transit zone in the center of the city, as well as free CAT buses that run seven days a week in the city and Fremantle.
  • The city offers free walking tours at 9:45 a.m. every day except Sunday, leaving from the Perth City Visitor Kiosk near the Perth Underground train station. You can register by email ([email protected]) or by visiting the kiosk.
  • Access to the Perth Cultural Centre in Northbridge is generally free, but there may be an entrance fee for some special exhibitions. The Cultural Centre includes the  Art Gallery of Western Australia , the  State Library of Western Australia  and the  Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts .

Perth Airport flights to resume after refuelling issue grounded planes, stranding thousands

A refuelling issue at Perth Airport which grounded domestic and international flights on Saturday morning has been resolved, the airport says.

At least 70 domestic and international flights were affected, with planes unable to land at the airport or depart.

Passengers were stranded at airports nationwide and at some international destinations, including Doha waiting to get to Perth.

A flight board shwoing cancelled flights.

Perth Airport said a problem with load pressure in the fuel lines had caused the issue, which had since been fixed.

Airport CEO Jason Waters said the system had now been repaired and tested.

Mr Waters apologised to impacted travellers and said the airport would be working with airlines to resume normal operations as soon as possible.

"The effects will be felt throughout today but we'd like to think that within a short period of time after that we'll get back to normal flights," he said.

"I'd like to think that by this evening and into tomorrow we'll have it dealt with but given we're talking about long haul flights and the extent of the backlog, it might take some time."

It's understood some flights had been delayed since Friday night, leaving thousands of passengers stranded.

Passengers mill about an airport terminal, with one in the foreground siutting on the floor beside a pink suitcase.

The airport called in external experts, including engineers and technicians, to identify and repair the problem.

"As of just recently, I can inform you that we are back to normal refuelling and obviously very keen to see a return to normal operation," Mr Waters said.

"This has had a significant impact on flights overnight.

"From Perth airport's perspective we're very apologetic and sympathetic to impacted travellers.

"We're going to work very hard with our airlines here to ensure we get things back to normal as quickly as possible."

Mr Waters said the problem appeared to be the result of "air sucked into the distribution system".

No compensation for passengers, says Virgin

Virgin Airlines apologised to customers in a statement handed to passengers at Perth Airport, but said it was not required by law to provide compensation "for delays or cancellations outside of our control".

"We recommend you contact your travel insurance provider to assist you with any unforeseen expenses," the statement said.

A virgin spokeswoman later clarified that passengers were entitled to be re-booked on other flights or apply for a refund.

Perth man Darshan Patel, who had had been planning to go to Hobart on Saturday for his wife's birthday until their flight was cancelled, said the airline's response was not good enough.

He wants compensation for his flights and other non-refundable bookings, such as accommodation.

Mid-shot of a family standing at Perth airport.

"We're really not happy because we've been planning for this holiday for quite a long time," Mr Patel said.

"Somebody is responsible for what is happening and there should be something done to help the passengers.

"We've booked everything well ahead, now it's getting cancelled. All our bookings are non-refundable.

"It's just passengers who are suffering."

Flights diverted to regional airports

At least four flights were diverted to regional airports including a Philippines Airlines flight from Manila to Perth that landed in Geraldton earlier on Saturday.

Geraldton is about 420 kilometres north of Perth.

A Phillipines Airlines plane parked on a runway viewed through a black steel fence.

A Geraldton Airport spokesperson said the small regional airport could only assist with a handful of flights due to having limited fuel supply themselves.

Passengers on the Philippines flight were not allowed to disembark and a biosecurity representative was on site.

City of Geraldton chief executive Ross McKim said Geraldton Airport was in danger of running out of fuel after the Philippines flight took a quarter of the airport's fuel capacity.

"The [airport's] refuelling isn't booked until mid-next week so we're going to have to work out how to get some up sooner than that," he said.

Qantas flight QFA10 from London to Perth was diverted to Karratha, in the state's far north.

Other flights were diverted to Kalgoorlie, about 600km east of Perth.

Passenger sat on plane for hours

Perth man Campbell Grieves and Swiss exchange student Zander Goosen arrived at the airport early to catch a flight to Sydney.

"We were taking (Zander) to see all the classic Aussie things in Sydney … the bridge, the Opera House," Mr Grieves said.

Two young men in a busy airport terminal smile at the camera.

"We get here at about 6am and we get on the plane, boarded alright, then we sat there in the little economy seat for two hours.

"The captain was ringing every in hour saying 'dunno where the fuel is,' eventually we get kicked off the plane and the flight is cancelled."

Mr Grieves said he had been told the earliest he and Mr Goosen could travel to Sydney was Monday.

A long queue of people stand in line with their luggage at Perth Airport.

Perth resident Stephen Herbert is stranded in Doha, where he was meant to stop briefly en route from London to Perth on Qatar Airlines.

" We have been in a line with other returning Aussies for nearly four hours," he said.

"No official from Qatar Airlines has given us any updates and we are relying on social media.

"[There are] lots of tired and disgruntled people wanting answers."

Crowds mill about a crowded airport terminal.

He was scathing of Perth Airport over the delays.

"There's no way you can call Perth an international airport after this debacle. Imagine if this happened at Heathrow?" he said.

Another passenger in Doha, Rae de Wet, told the ABC a delay of more than 24 hours was expected before they could get back to Perth, but little information had been provided.

She said she had already been in transit for more than 30 hours since leaving South Africa.

Perth airport board showing cancelled flights

"It is incomprehensible that an international airport could face an issue of this nature, embarrassing really especially on an international scale," she said.

At Sydney Airport, Perth man Steven Dipane said his son had been at a baseball tournament in Lismore and he was trying to head home.

"They're going to book us in to a room for the night, and then get us on a plane to Melbourne tomorrow and then to Perth.

"It just delays it. I would have liked to be home tonight."

Dieter Spurgeon's family is currently in Darwin after their flight home from a family holiday to Perth was delayed over 36 hours.

"We've contacted both Qantas and Perth airport and neither seem willing to reimburse us for an extra night's stay in Darwin," he said.

He said communication by both the airport and airline has been "horrendous".

Perth Airport Gets New Terminal in $5 billion Makeover

Avatar

The Western Australian capital of Perth is set to become home to a new world-class airport terminal following the signing of an agreement that will deliver billions in new investment.

On Friday, Perth Airport and Qantas announced a 12-year agreement that will underpin a major upgrade for the airport and deliver a significant boost to Western Australia’s tourism industry and economy.

The agreement will see more than $5 billion invested towards a new terminal at Airport Central, a new parallel runway, two multi-storey carparks and an airport hotel.

Qantas and Jetstar’s services will relocate to the new terminal when it opens in 2031.

By that time, Qantas and Jetstar plan to have added 4.4 million seats in additional annual capacity to and from Perth.

The new terminal will feature seamless domestic and international transfer as well as state-of-the-art check-in and bag drop facilities.

Qantas will work with Perth Airport on plans for a multi-lounge precinct for international and domestic passengers with a new signature design and bespoke dining and wellness initiatives.

As part of the agreement, Qantas plans to build a new engineering hangar in the Airport Central precinct.

The new terminal will be serviced by the METRONET Airport Central Station, which will provide an affordable public transport link directly from the airport to the city.

As an interim measure whilst the new terminal is being developed, Perth Airport will invest in upgrades to Terminals 3 and 4 – the current home of Quantas domestic and international flights.

This will create additional capacity whilst the new terminal is being constructed.

Jetstar will relocate its domestic services to Terminal 2 from September 2024, unlocking further growth opportunities for both airlines, before moving into the Airport Central terminal when complete.

Whilst the ultimate goal centres on the new terminal, the interim upgrades in the meantime will enable Qantas to add services and more destinations from Perth. This will include Auckland and Johannesburg flights from mid-2025, subject to meeting border agency requirements.

The works will also include gate upgrades to accommodate ultra-long-haul aircraft. This includes Quantas’ Project Sunrise Airbus A350s which are expected to arrive from 2026.

Qantas and Perth Airport have also agreed on the need for and timing of the new parallel runway which is expected to be open in 2028.

The latest agreement is expected to deliver significant benefits for the city of Perth and the state of Western Australia and will deliver benefits for specific important sectors such as tourism and resources.

The hub will also enhance inbound tourism and give Australians more options when travelling to Asia, Africa, India and Europe.

This is particularly important as the airport is currently running at capacity during weekdays at peak periods.

As things stand, airlines and passengers currently need to endure a waitlist of slots between 5:30am and 7:30am.

The latest agreement has also resolved a long-running dispute between Quantas and Perth Airport over processing charges, the former’s move to a single terminal complex on the eastern side of the airport and building the parallel runway.

Whilst the main airport sits on the eastern side of Perth’s runway, Qantas and Jetstar domestic flights never made the move across to this and remain stuck in the old airport building on the western side of the runway.

As a result, passengers navigating between Qantas’ garden shed and the main airport currently endure an eight-kilometre bus ride.

visit perth airport

Perth Airport CEO Jason Waters welcomed the announcement.

“This is a special moment in the history of aviation in Western Australia as this agreement will unlock the future for both Perth Airport and Qantas,” Waters said.

“Qantas has some ambitious growth plans for its operations in Perth and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to push ahead together to realise this potential.

“Western Australians will now see the largest-ever private investment in an infrastructure development in Perth – a once in a lifetime investment program that will completely change the face of Perth Airport over the next decade.

“Perth Airport’s plans will see more than $5 billion invested in delivering new terminal facilities, a new parallel runway, two multi-storey carparks with associated roadworks, and our first airport hotel.

“This will create thousands of construction and on-going jobs, underpin the future growth of the FIFO-based resources sector, generate new tourism and trade opportunities, and deliver enormous ongoing benefits to Western Australia.

“Most importantly, it will deliver one airport for the people of Western Australia which will host all flight services giving them a seamless, world class travel experience.”

Quantas CEO Vanessa Hudson agreed.

Noting that Quantas’ Perth-London and Perth-Rome represented two of the most popular flights on the carrier’s international network, Hudson said that Perth is now on-track to become Quantas’ second biggest international gateway behind Sydney.

The additional flying would see Quantas create an additional 700 jobs across Western Australia, from pilots to crew, engineering and airport staff, Hudson added.

$5bn to develop new airport gateway

Qantas has announced its biggest ever airport investment reaching a historic agreement with Perth Airport to make Western Australia home to the nation’s second biggest airport hub.

The 12-year agreement to develop a new terminal and runway was reached between Qantas and Perth Airport after years of negotiations. They are expected to be operational by 2028.

It will form part of a $5b capital investment program by the airport, the largest infrastructure development to be undertaken in Perth, which will also deliver multistorey carparks, roadworks and the airport’s first hotel.

The development will make Perth Airport the biggest airport hub for domestic and international flights outside of Sydney.

Qantas and Jetstar will relocate all services to a new terminal in the Airport Central precinct that will see the airport become the nation’s second biggest hub for domestic and international airlines.

Qantas and Jetstar plan to add 4.4 million seats to and from Perth annually by the time the new terminal opens in 2031, enhancing inbound tourism and giving Australians more options to travel to Asia, Africa, India and Europe.

A new engineering hangar will also be built by Qantas at the airport, as part of the agreement.

The current terminal 3 and 4 building will be upgraded to add services and destinations from Perth to places such as Auckland and Johannesburg from mid-2025, and will service more logistic flights and private planes.

Perth Airport chief executive officer Jason Waters said it was moment in history.

“This deal delivers a new future for aviation into, out of and around Western Australia, it allows both Qantas and Perth Airport to realise growth plans and cements Perth as Australia’s western aviation hub,” he said.

“For Perth Airport, it unlocks $5bn worth of investment which will see a dedicated terminal for Qantas Group airlines, an expanded international terminal, a much needed new runway and the upgrade and expansion of our existing terminal 2, multistorey carparks and our first airport hotel.

“It will be completely change the face of Perth Airport.”

Mr Waters said they expected the development to create 3000 new jobs across the construction period, as well as support growth in WA’s resource sector, tourism and trade opportunities.

Qantas chief executive officer Vanessa Hudson said it was the largest airport infrastructure deal in Qantas’ history, significantly expanding its domestic and international services.

“It has been a long and sometimes hard and difficult journey but in the last 12 months the team came together to work through all the challenges,” she said.

“This investment is the largest airport investment that the Qantas Group has ever undertaken.

“We are absolutely delighted to make this historic investment in Perth, this will become our western hub.

“Once completed it will be the largest airport hub complex outside of Sydney, that is so exciting.

“Not only will it allow us to bring hundreds of thousands more travellers to and through Western Australia each year, it will also make it easier for overseas tourists to connect to more destinations across Australia.

“The additional flying will see us create an estimated 700 new jobs in WA across pilots, crew, engineering and airport staff.”

Premier Roger Cook said it was a great day for Western Australia and continued the vision that Perth would become the western gateway for the rest of the nation and connect it with the rest of the world.

The Premier said the deal settled historic issues between to the two parties and forged a pathway ahead to make sure WA could grow through the crucial piece of economic infrastructure.

“This is a mega deal,” he said.

“It has been long anticipated … I am so excited about the future of WA.”

Tourism Council WA chief executive officer Evan Hall welcomed the certainty and investment of the new commercial agreement.

Mr Hall said a key outcome of the new commercial arrangement was a significant expansion in aviation capacity to attract new international routes, both in the short term and over time.

“Ultimately, a single airport for international and interstate visitors with easy connections to regional WA services, will create a seamless transfer for visitors and enhance international tourism to Perth and regional WA.”

Flying from Perth

Perth Airport, Australia’s fourth busiest airport, serves the west of the continent and links passengers to destinations all over the world.

Qatar Airways flights from Perth regularly travel to Doha, making this a convenient departure point for both business and leisure travellers.

The typically laid-back Australian nature makes this a very friendly airport too, with helpful staff available throughout. Parking and transportation

Perth Airport is very business-focused, providing plenty of parking and easy transportation to, and from, the city of Perth for business users.

Long-term parking is just 10 minutes away from the International Terminal 1, and a shuttle bus runs every few minutes from the parking area to the terminal. Both short and long-term parking areas are patrolled by 24-hour security.

The Perth Airport Connect shuttle bus runs from East Perth train station, and other locations in the city, to Terminal 3. International travellers can then connect with a shuttle bus service to take them to Terminal 1. Covered taxi ranks are located outside the main entrance to the terminal. Arriving in Perth

Qatar Airways flights from Perth leave from International Terminal 1. The terminal has a number of lounges (some of which are airline-specific). Security is tight in Australia, so ensure that you do not have any banned items in your handbags and carry-on luggage to avoid delays. Facilities and amenities

Wi-Fi is available throughout Terminal 1 (note that there may be some not-spots in areas close to ongoing construction). There are a number of retail outlets in Terminal 1, including duty-free shops  and others that offer Australian goods – ideal for buying last-minute souvenirs.

A food court provides passengers with a selection of light bites, snacks, drinks and substantial meals with an international flavour.

Arriving in

From the iconic domes of St Basil’s Cathedral and the drama of Red Square, Moscow is a unique city with its own very individual personality. The people of Moscow are incredibly warm and welcoming, and are particularly friendly towards visitors who come to see their city. For 860 years this thriving metropolis has been at the heart of Russia. It is the country’s political and financial hub, as well as its commercial centre. Book a flight to Moscow with Qatar Airways and you’ll find that it’s also a popular tourist destination, full of photogenic architecture, fascinating museums and galleries, and a thriving arts scene that includes world-famous dance and ballet companies. Tourist attractions The vast majority of visitors head straight for Red Square, at the very heart of the city. This huge square is also home to St Basil’s Cathedral with its brightly painted ‘onion’ domes, the State History Museum, Lenin's Mausoleum and one of the Kremlin's imposing brick walls. Inside the Kremlin you’ll find a wealth (quite literally) of attractions, including the famous Diamond collection in the armoury, some stunning architecture and matinee ballet performances in the Conference Centre.

If you need somewhere to rest for a moment, the Kremlin’s gardens are beautifully tranquil oases of calm in the middle of a noisy and busy city. If you want to discover the spirit of Moscow then take a stroll down Old Arbat Street, with its boutiques and street traders. Art is hugely important to the Russian people, and one of the best collections can be found at The Institute of Russian Realist Art, with a stunning display of the country’s finest realist artists. For a glimpse of modern Moscow, head to the revived Gorky Park, now home to trendy cafés, shops and an open-air cinema. And for a little peace and tranquillity take a stroll around Park Sokolniki, or the lesser known Aptekarskiy ogorod park. Travel considerations Flights to Moscow with Qatar Airways land at Domodedovo International Airport. Visa restrictions for entry into the country will depend on your country of origin, length of stay and whether your trip is for business or pleasure. Before you fly to Moscow please check the visa and passport requirements.
