ActiveSG to partner Australia's Voyager Tennis Academy to develop players in Singapore

voyager tennis academy reviews

SINGAPORE - Years after talk of partnering a top tennis training centre to work with local junior players first surfaced, such a collaboration has now materialised with the Sydney-based Voyager Tennis Academy's new collaboration with the ActiveSG Tennis Academy .

The partnership, a two-year contract worth a six-figure sum, will offer a developmental pathway from beginner to elite levels at an affordable price - 10 weekly sessions cost $130 in total. This works out to between $6.50 to $8.60 per hour.

Hourly group lessons at private tennis academies here can start from more than $20 per hour.

Voyager is a multi-award winning tennis academy that has developed multiple national champions and professional players in Australia. It is also where Ethan Lye, one of Singapore's top junior players, trains at. In 2018, Voyager partnered the McDonald College to win the Australia Tennis School Championships and also took fifth place in the World Tennis School Championships.

Sport Singapore (SportSG), then called the Singapore Sports Council, had in 2011 explored a partnership with Barcelona's Sanchez-Casal Tennis Academy and three years later met Carlos Rodriguez, the former coach of two-time Grand Slam champion Li Na, to discuss the possibility of a collaboration.

SportSG chief executive Lim Teck Yin told The Straits Times on Wednesday (Sept 4) that such a partnership was not feasible at the time "given the state of development of the tennis scene in Singapore then".

But, referring to the popularity of the tennis courts at Heartbeat @ Bedok, he added: "What has changed is there's a growing interest not just in the central district but also further afield, (that) people want to play good quality tennis.

"When we were running our tennis academy there were a lot of people wanting to come and try... we've made tennis more affordable and accessible."

The revamped ActiveSG Tennis Academy programmes start from Sept 16 at seven locations island-wide with a core team at Heartbeat @ Bedok Development Centre. This core team comprises one head coach from Voyager, Allen Belobrajdic, senior head coach Sharin Jamal and six other local coaches.

Voyager managing director Ryan Henry said: "We are really excited to be given the opportunity to bring our expertise to Singapore and to work with the many talented players in this country. We hope, over the next couple of years, to contribute towards producing more Team Singapore athletes that will make the nation proud in international competitions."

Singapore Tennis Association president Clement Leow added: "This partnership will make it more accessible for Singaporeans to take up tennis as well as to progress in the sport. This can only bode well for tennis in Singapore. We will work together with Sport Singapore and Voyager to strengthen our national team."

Is It Safe in Moscow?

voyager tennis academy reviews

Stanislav Solntsev / Getty Images

When you visit Moscow , Russia, you’re seeing one of the world’s largest, and most expensive, capital cities . While there is a history of violent crime against foreign journalists and aid personnel in Russia, a trip to Moscow is usually safe for mainstream travelers. Most tourists in Moscow only face potential issues with petty crime, though terrorism is also a concern. Visitors should stick to the principal tourist areas and abide by the local security advice.

Travel Advisories

  • The U.S. Department of State urges travelers to avoid travel to Russia because of COVID-19 and to "exercise increased caution due to terrorism, harassment, and the arbitrary enforcement of local laws."
  • Anyone exploring more of Russia should avoid "The North Caucasus, including Chechnya and Mount Elbrus, due to terrorism, kidnapping,   and   risk of civil unrest." Also, travelers should stay away from "Crimea due to Russia’s occupation of the Ukrainian territory   and   abuses by its occupying authorities."
  • Canada states travelers should use a high degree of caution in Russia due to the threat of terrorism and crime.

Is Moscow Dangerous?

The Moscow city center is typically safe. In general, the closer you are to the Kremlin , the better. Travelers mainly need to be aware of their surroundings and look out for petty crime. Be especially careful in tourist areas such as Arbat Street and crowded places like the Moscow Metro transit system. The suburbs are also generally fine, though it is advised to stay away from Maryino and Perovo districts.

Terrorism has occurred in the Moscow area, leading authorities to increase security measures. Be more careful at tourist and transportation hubs, places of worship, government buildings, schools, airports, crowds, open markets, and additional tourist sites.

Pickpockets and purse snatching happen often in Russia, perpetrated by groups of children and teenagers who distract tourists to get their wallets and credit cards. Beware of people asking you for help, who then trick you into their scheme. Don’t expect a backpack to be a safe bag bet; instead, invest in something that you can clutch close to your body or purchase a money belt . Always diversify, storing some money in a separate location so that if you are pickpocketed, you'll have cash elsewhere. Keep an eye out for thieves in public transportation, underground walkways, tourist spots, restaurants, hotel rooms and homes, restaurants, and markets.

Is Moscow Safe for Solo Travelers?

Large cities like Moscow in Russia are overall fairly safe if you are traveling alone, and the Moscow Metro public transit is a secure and easy way to get around. But it is still a good idea to follow basic precautions as in any destination. Avoid exploring alone at night, especially in bad areas. You may want to learn some basic Russian phrases or bring a dictionary, as many locals don't speak English. However, in case you need any help, there are tourist police that speak English. Also, exploring with other trusted travelers and locals or on professional tours is often a good way to feel safe.

Is Moscow Safe for Female Travelers?

Catcalling and street harassment are infrequent in Moscow and the rest of Russia and females traveling alone don't usually have problems. There are plenty of police officers on the streets as well. Still, it serves to stick to Moscow's well-lit, public areas, avoid solo night walks, and use your instincts. Women frequenting bars may take receive some friendly attention. Females can wear whatever they want, but those entering Orthodox churches will be required to cover up. Though women in Russia are independent, domestic violence and other inequality issues take place regularly.

Safety Tips for LGBTQ+ Travelers

Russia is not known as a gay-friendly country. However, Moscow is one of the more welcoming cities with a blooming LGBTQ+ community and many friendly restaurants, bars, clubs, and other venues. Hate crimes in Russia have increased since the 2013 anti-gay propaganda law. Openly LGBTQ+ tourists in this conservative country may experience homophobic remarks, discrimination, or even violence, especially if traveling with a partner. Also, while women hold hands or hug publicly—whether romantically involved or not—men should avoid public displays of affection to prevent being insulted or other issues.

Safety Tips for BIPOC Travelers

Moscow  and other big cities in Russia have sizable populations of various cultures, so discrimination against BIPOC travelers is rarer than in other parts of the country where it can become dangerous. Some people living in Russia who are Black, Asian, Jewish, and from other backgrounds have experienced racial discrimination and violence. Tourists won't usually experience overt racism but may be the recipients of some stares. If anyone should bother you, be polite and resist being taunted into physically defending yourself.

Safety Tips for Travelers

Travelers should consider the following general tips when visiting:

  • It's best not to drink the tap water. If you do, boil it before drinking, though showering is safe and the amount used to brush teeth is generally not harmful. Mineral water is widely drunk, especially at restaurants, and if you prefer not to have it carbonated ask for “ voda byez gaz” (water without gas).
  • If you need emergency assistance in case of fire, terrorism, medical issues, or more, dial 112 in Russia for bilingual operators.
  • Be judicious about taking photographs, especially of police or officials. This can potentially bring unwanted attention to yourself by members of law enforcement who won’t mind asking to see your passport. Also avoid snapping photos of official-looking buildings, such as embassies and government headquarters.
  • Carry your passport in as secure a manner as possible. If you get stopped for any reason by the police, they can fine or arrest you if you don't have the document with you. Also, keep photocopies of your passport, the page on which your travel visa appears, and any other documents that relate to your stay in Russia.
  • Use official taxis only and steer clear of illegal taxi companies, especially at night. Ask your hotel to call a reputable taxi company.

Dmitri Jurowski

Moscow City Symphony-Russian Philharmonic/Dmitri Jurowski – review

G lorying in a name that seems to have been chosen by a very large committee, the Moscow City Symphony-Russian Philharmonic is a smart modern orchestra based in the city's glitzy modern concert hall . Judging by its London debut, however, it is old-school where it counts.

Its chief conductor is Dmitri Jurowski , and his appearance meant there would be a Jurowski on the Festival Hall podium four times in a week; big brother Vladimir was in the audience to cheer him on. The programme was Russian and proud. Extracts from Prokofiev's ballet Cinderella immediately introduced a distinctive sound, soft-edged but hefty, with well-blended strings underpinned by weighty low woodwind; the rasp of the bass clarinet and contrabassoon were to become gratifyingly familiar sounds.

But not so much in Prokofiev's Third Piano Concerto, in which the orchestra seemed to be consciously ceding focus to Alexander Ghindin 's piano playing. While Ghindin was all offhand, unfussy brilliance, the orchestra were neat and contained – except, that is, for the opening of the slow movement, when the flute phrasing made the melody sound positively flirty, and Ghindin responded in smooth, almost louche style. His encore, Rachmaninov's G minor Prelude, whizzed by in a flurry of sonorous chords, but the richness with which he brought out the secondary melodies in the middle section spoke of attention to detail worn lightly.

That was just a taster for the main Rachmaninov event – the colossus that is the Symphony No 2, approached by Jurowski with a certain lightness of touch and all the better for it. It was because he began the third movement so gently and at so flowing a pace that he was able to make such an impact with the sense of stillness after its climax. The second movement was crisp, the finale buoyant – and the encore, the Infernal Dance from Stravinsky's Firebird, was a flamboyant signoff from an orchestra confident of hitting its mark.

What you love about Tennis? I love tennis because of how unique it is. Tennis is a very physical, psychological and emotional sport, making it demanding and exciting to play. I also love how tennis is one of the only sports that when you are on the court, you are on your own. Having to problem solve and figure out a solution is one of many traits tennis players develop, which in return can also help with overcoming real life situations. Tennis has taught me many lessons throughout my career, which I am excited to share to other up and coming tennis athletes.

What I love about Tennis? That it teaches you not just to confront all kinds of situations inside the court, but outside of it too. In that way it becomes a way of life, a way of looking and dealing with it, that most people don’t have the opportunity to get ahold of. I also love that through it, it can help lots of young people to open a variety of rich life paths linked to tennis.

What I love about Tennis? “Tennis does not shape the character, it reveals it. The beauty of this sport is that you have to face a lot of challenges, defeats and hard training but the reward, the feeling when you manage to achieve a goal, is priceless. Every single drop of sweat worth the journey.”

What I love about Tennis? The fact that it’s just you verse one other person. There are so many ways in which you can play the game and when you’re out there competing you might not match up so well against a particular player, so you have to problem solve your way through it because there is no where to hide. I love that there is no time limit either, so you’re never racing the clock you’re just competing.

The reason I love tennis is that it brings a competitive nature to each match where it’s just you and your opponent, with no team mates that you can rely on to get the job done for you. What our Voyagers say about us.

Aimee started with Voyager in 2018 when she was seven and half.  She has progressed through several squads. Due to the large number of good players across all age groups within the Voyager Academy, each squad has been a strong group. A high intensity training standard is maintained in all squads by different coaches who always put 100% effort in. High quality training is what we get from Voyager.

voyager tennis academy reviews

I enjoy training with Voyager, it’s something I look forward to every week. They have high performance coaches like Luke and my main coach Adam who help set goals and achieve them together. It is very fun and you get to play with some amazing players as well. Voyager is an awesome tennis academy and I thank them for supporting me through the years.

One year ago, I did a bit of independent research online by looking at google reviews and a few other alternatives before I chose Voyager Pennant Hills for tennis training. I am now addicted to tennis training here! The coaches such as Abhi, Rafa, and Gaurav are true professionals. They are passionate, result-driven. They will tell you how and explain why. They don’t just possess the theory. They are good professional players themselves as well. Most important, it is always a fun experience to train with them. My brother, nephew joined their training and both benefited from it tremendously.

I’ve returned to tennis after a 30 year break and started training with Adam and the coaching team at Voyager. With such a high quality coaching service I’ve found the group and private lessons have improved my tennis skills. It’s great to be matched with other players at the same level in the group sessions. Best of all I always leave the Voyager courts with a smile on my face!

Both myself and my husband are completely new to tennis. We have relied on the strong support our son Max has received from Adam and the Voyager team. They have helped Max to achieve incredible results and after only one year and two months of playing tennis Max competed in his first Junior Tournament in Canberra. Max absolutely loves being part of the Voyager team.

This place has far more negatives than positives. Management is overbearing and there is a culture of blaming coaches for things that are outside of their control. The pay is poor across the board regardless of position. Management demand very long hours from coaches. The classes constantly have far to many players and not enough court space.
