Is Warner Brothers Studio Tour Really Worth The Money?

So you’re planning a trip to Los Angeles and you’re wondering – is the Warner Brothers Studio Tour really worth the money? The short answer is – yes. (You can certainly keep on reading if you’d like to hear my thoughts and observations on the entire experience!) In this article I’ll answer another popular question: what do you see on the Warner Brothers tour?

The Warner Brothers Studio Tour has been known to be one of the best backlot studio tours in all of Los Angeles for more than a decade. The first time I went on a tour was back in 2007 – when Everybody Loves Raymond was a hit TV show produced on site. I remember it well because seeing the sets of the popular sitcom up-close was a highlight for me that day.

Warner brothers studio tour

Fast forward to 2023 and the Warner Brothers Studio Tour is still great – but has been streamlined with even more unique experiences for visitors.

Buying Tickets And Starting The Studio Tour

The ticket buying process is simple – you can purchase them online and see right away which tours are still available. The studio has a paid parking garage which is immediately next to the entrance where you’ll start your tour.

You’ll begin the experience with a video presentation that lasts about ten minutes and gives a nice overview of the studio’s history, location, and what you can expect as the tour begins.

As you exit the theater, one of the tour guides will drive you around the backlot on a small tram that holds about 15 people. It’s not a crowded experience – each tour is quite intimate and you shouldn’t have any trouble at all hearing the trivia tidbits or seeing things they’ll point out along the way.

is the warner brothers tour worth it

The Warner Brothers Studio Tour finally begins!

You’re likely to see some notable locations as you cruise around the lot. For fans of the show Friends , you’ll see where they filmed the introduction of the popular sitcom and splashed around in the “Friends fountain.” You also may spot the Tanner’s San Francisco home from Fuller House or the cafe featured in Shameless . Be on the lookout for the courthouse – it’s used in many films but notably was where Batman & Robin went to visit Commissioner Gordon in the 60s TV series Batman .

Friends set at Warner brothers studio tour

While you’re on the backlot tour you’ll likely stop to see one of the actual production sets for a current television show. Back in 2007 – I remember getting to visit the sets of The West Wing; ER; and Gilmore Girls. Since I don’t watch much television these days, I wasn’t really familiar with the sets we were able to see this time. The good news is – even if you don’t know the show, it’s still really interesting being on a sound stage and seeing how they produce television programs.

You’ll also likely visit some of the empty facades which line the streets of the backlot. It’s interesting to hear which classic films or shows previously used the same buildings – with different paint jobs or decorations. Warner Brothers is known for making good use of everything they already have built! It’s cool how many of these buildings you get to see during the Warner Brothers Studio Tour!

Dress Appropriately For The Tour!

The first part of the tour is almost completely outside (the tram has no doors or windows) and you’ll be subject to whatever the weather happens to be doing. Bring a light jacket in the winter months or prepare to be hot in the summer months.

Explore Warner Brothers Studio Tour Visitors Center

The second part of the tour takes place in a visitors center where you’re able to take as much time as you want to explore. You can even grab a bite to eat! It’s here where you are able to have some really interesting hands-on experiences and learn about the production process that takes place at Warner Brothers.

Warner brother studio tour

You’ll have a chance to try your hand at voiceovers and see how sound effects are produced for films. You’ll learn about the process for creating a musical soundtrack and how to creatively use camera angles. There are quite a few wardrobe pieces on display from notable films and even a section of drawing cartoons – like Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck.

See The Set of Friends and Big Bang Theory Set

The most popular attraction for guests at the visitors center is getting to see the Friends set. The iconic sitcom is still popular and people love getting the chance to sit on the Friends couch.

Personally, my favorite part of the Warner Brothers Studio Tour was having the chance to sit in Sheldon’s spot on the set of The Big Bang Theory. For no additional charge, you can have your photo taken while you visit the set Friends or see the Big Bang Theory set. (They also offer a paid version if you’d prefer a higher quality image. I just used my Iphone!)

Now on to the third and final part of the Warner Brothers Studio Tour – a tram whisks you away to another building that’s connected to where you started your tour. This building has memorabilia and artifacts from various Warner Brothers productions like Batman Returns, Superman, and Harry Potter. (I’ve honestly never seen Harry Potter – but if you read the books or watched the movies – this is something you’d probably really enjoy.)

Warner brother studio tour

Again – you’re allowed to take your time browsing and once you’re finished, you’ll exit back into the main lobby where you can go through the Warner Brothers Studio Tour gift shop or head back to your car in the garage.

Is Warner Brothers Studio Tour Worth It?

Overall, the Warner Brothers Studio Tour is a great bargain if you’re looking for the best backlot tour in Los Angeles. If you can find a southern California resident to tag along – the tickets are about $10 cheaper!

You can find tickets and tour times on their website . They also offer a “deluxe” tour experience for a much higher price – but for the average person – the general tour is going to be more than enough.

It may not be as popular as some other studio tours in Los Angeles, but this is actually one of my favorite places to visit as a film fan.

That's why I decided to write this post about the experience, including details about the Warner Bros. Studio Tour such as how to get tickets, ways to save money on admission, the best things to see here, and tips for planning your trip to the studio.

PLAN YOUR VISIT

This section will help you plan your visit with directions to Warner Bros. Studio Hollywood, the best times to visit, and security measures to keep in mind.

How to Get Here

Warner Bros. Studio is located just North of the Hollywood sign at 3400 Warner Blvd. in Burbank, California, and it's known as one of the busiest working studios.

The closest bus stops are just a few blocks away on W Olive Avenue, and they are serviced by lines 501 and 549.

Alternatively, you can also take the Metro Red line to North Hollywood station and take the 501 bus from there.

Needless to say, the Starline combo ticket which includes transportation to and from the studio is another easy option.

If all else fails, you can always use a rideshare service or drive up on your own – but it is important to note that parking will cost $15 per vehicle.

Best Times to Visit

Since they offer timed tickets for the Warner Bros. Studio Tour, you can rest assured that pretty much any time is a good time to visit.

That said, it should be noted that the tv studio is open daily from 8:30 am - 3:30 pm with tours available throughout the day.

The time you arrive will depend on what type of tour route you take, and you can find more information about this in our studio tours section .

Security Requirements

If you're tired of the showy, amusement park rides that some studio tours have become, you'll be happy to hear that Warner Bros. has begun offering a special tour based on the TCM network, which is well known for being a bastion for fans of classic films.

The tour, conducted by expert tour guides, lasts for 1 hour, and you’ll be given another 2 hours for a self-guided tour with access to the Warner Bros. Archive.

Immerse yourself in the cinematic world, tracing the footsteps of Harry Potter and exploring iconic back-lot sets like the Casablanca cafe, all while gaining insights into studios' production requirements.

Reviews and Tips From Locals and Travelers

If I'm being honest, I have to admit that this isn't the most popular studio tour in Hollywood. Even so, it's definitely a hit with some film and television fans, and there are a lot of interesting things to see on the backlot.

To quote LeVar Burton, "you don't have to take my word for it!" Our Los Angeles Travel Tips group on Facebook is full of travelers and locals who have either been on these studio tours themselves, or are frequently asking questions about them.

Here are a few of the better reviews and notes that our group members have made about the Warner Bros. Studio Tour:

warner bros tour cost

Most people who swear by this studio tour have little to say about it, and while it's helpful to see that some guests enjoyed their experience on the back lot, it's much more helpful to hear about the journey.

warner bros tour cost

William's comment is the perfect example of describing the experience. After multiple trips to Los Angeles, he has seen and done a lot of fun things, but still considers his tour of Warner Bros. Studios to be his favorite of the bunch.

Now that's high praise!

warner bros tour cost

It should be noted that this is an active studio, and some shows are still filmed here during the week. If you're a fan of television, this is an especially good studio tour, because it includes a lot of attractions related to Warner Brothers tv shows.

Warner Bros. Studio Tour: Know Before You Go

warner bros tour cost

If you've ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes during the making of a television show or major Hollywood movie, the Warner Bros. Studio Tour in Los Angeles gives visitors an opportunity to find out. For more than 75 years, Warner Bros. has been making movies at their Burbank studios, and they generously share their heritage with visitors on daily tours of the facilities.

However, unlike the extensive  studio tour at Universal , the Warner Bros. tour is unscripted and changes depending on what's currently in production at the studio. While Universal Studios has many sets from previous films, the only set you'll find at Warner Bros. is from the "Friends" television show, which has been relocated to a small room near the prop department so that visitors can enjoy it.

Tips for Enjoying the Tour

  • Some walking is required, and you'll get on and off the tram several times.
  • Adults must bring legal photo identification, and you will have to show it at the ticket counter.
  • Children under 8 are not allowed. Additionally, children ages 8 through 17 must be accompanied by an adult to take the tour.
  • Plan on arriving at least 30 minutes before your scheduled tour departure. Arriving early will allow time for parking and security.
  • Leave your video camera in the car as much of the tour doesn't allow photography; however, there are parts of the studio where you can snap a picture on your phone.
  • Do not bring large bags like backpacks or suitcases, or anything that might be considered a weapon (including pocket knives, mace, or pepper spray).
  • You will be check by a metal detector and have your personal belongings inspected before being allowed to enter the studio.
  • If you're visiting several Hollywood attractions on the same day, you can save money on the Paramount Tour with a Go Card.

Tour Options

Besides the basic tour, Warner Bros. offers an expanded tour or two that cover more areas, go into more depth, and may include lunch in the commissary. Visit their website to find out about these options if you're interested. However, keep in mind that the deluxe tour experiences may also have higher age requirements for guests—experiences that feature drinks are often only available to guests over the age of 21.

Warner Bros. Studio Tour

The standard Warner Bros. Studio Tour takes guests through a real, working film production area—not a theme park. Every tour is different and depends on the film and television production schedules, but they regularly include a visit to a set or two and a peek at some of the behind-the-scenes productions of Hollywood. Highlights of the tour include:

  • The reception center shows a short film highlighting the history of Warner Bros.
  • Visitors travel in groups of 12 or less in an open-air tram. The tour varies, but you may see the Costume Department, Scenic Department, sound stages, editing rooms, screening theaters, and the 2-million-gallon tank used for filming water scenes.
  • Some parts of the Warner Bros. Studios are off-limits to photography, such as the sound stages where movies and television shows are filmed. The tour guide will stow your cameras when you visit these areas.
  • Tours usually visit at least one or two filming sets, which are typically for television series; the sets you visit will depend on the filming schedule for the studio.
  • The tour visits some of the studio's twenty acres of exterior sets. It's in this area where most of the picture taking are allowed. This is also where the tour guides shine, showing visitors spots such as the scene of Spiderman and Mary Jane's first kiss. They'll also take you behind the facades, building fronts made just for show and into a "practical" set, which has rooms inside.
  • Even though only a small portion of the studio's memorabilia collection is on display in the Studio Museum, you'll probably still be looking around at the costumes, scripts, props, and letters when your tour guide says it's time to leave. Vigilant guards keep itchy hands off the treasures, and very little is behind glass so that you can see it all clearly.

Once you've been on the studio tour, you'll never think of a movie or television program in quite the same way again.

We rate the Warner Bros. Studio Tour 4 stars out of 5. It's an authentic tour of a working studio unfettered by special effects, and the museum is excellent.

What You Need to Know

Tours are available on weekdays year-round (when you'll find more things going on) and weekends during summer vacation time. Check the current schedule before you go (not required but highly recommended). Open spaces are sold on a first-come, first served basis. There is an admission fee charged (expensive) and parking is extra. The basic tour lasts a little more than two hours, the expanded tour options last longer. Any time is a great time to visit.

Getting There

3400 Riverside Drive Burbank, CA

Parking is in a visitor lot near Gate N which is located across from the above address. A parking fee is charged. Driving directions from all the Los Angeles freeways are available at the Warner Bros. website.

Our Review Of The Warner Bros Studio Tour In Hollywood

Batman emblem in light at Warner Bros studio tour Hollywood review

Touring a tv and movie studio should be on your Los Angeles travel itinerary, especially if you’re visiting for the very first time. But tours are not cheap and they take up a considerable portion of your day. There are also 4 major studios in Hollywood, so which one should you chose during your time in the City of Angels? In our review, we’ll show you exactly what to expect during the Warner Bros studio tour. We booked with Warner Bros because our research led us to believe this was the purest movie studio in town and we want to help you decide if taking a movie tour is worth your time and money.

Our Experience

Man and woman sitting on the couch on the Friends set at Central Perk

We visited Los Angeles during a 3 month road trip from New York to California. It was part of our 18 month honeymoon and it was the trip of a lifetime. Since neither of us had been to Los Angeles before, we looked forward to doing all of the touristy things including take a movie studio tour.

After comparing the options, we ended up booking with Warner Bros because it’s an extremely well known name and the reviews were good. We also enjoy many of their moves and tv shows so we though it would be interesting to see where these had been made. All of the photos in this guide were taken by us during the tour so you can really understand what to expect. Read more about us .

Warner Bros Studio History

Entrance to the Warner Bros Studio tour

Located in the city of Los Angeles, Warner Bros is one of the four major movie studios you can tour when visiting Hollywood. Officially known as Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc, it was founded by four brothers, Harry, Jack, Albert and Sam Warner who emigrated from Poland to Ontario, Canada in the early 1900’s.

In their first few years, they capitalized on various moving pictures and theater ventures eventually beginning to produce their own films. Warner Brothers Pictures was officially incorporated on April 4th, 1923 becoming a very recognizable name in the film studio business. By the end of the 1930’s, Warner Bros was producing over 100 movies a year with control over 360 theaters in the US and hundreds abroad.

Here are some of their popular works by decade :

  • 1930’s – The Public Enemy  (1931),  Scarface  (1932) and debut of Looney Tunes
  • 1940’s – The Maltese Falcon  (1941), Casablanca  (1942),
  • 1950’s – A Streetcar Named Desire  (1951),  Rebel Without a Cause  (1955) and the western tv series, Cheyenne  (1955)
  • 1960’s – My Fair Lady  (1964), Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?  (1966)
  • 1970’s – The Exorcist  (1973),  Blazing Saddles  (1974)
  • 1980’s – Blade Runner  (1982),  The Color Purple  (1985) and tv series, The Dukes of Hazzard

In 1990, Warner Communications merged with Time Inc. to form one of the largest media corporations in the world and Warner Brothers became part of this newly formed endeavor. Popular films after the merger included  GoodFellas  (1990),  The Fugitive  (1993),  Inception  (2010), and  Wonder Woman  (2017). Famous tv series such as the Matrix ,  Harry Potter , Ocean’s Eleven , Friends , ER and The Big Bang Theory followed in the later years.

We’re telling you this because your tour will include access to sets from the recent decades. So it’s important to think about what you’d like to see.

Travel Tip : Bugs Bunny is the official mascot for Warner Bros. You can expect to see him in numerous locations during your tour.

Warner Bros Studio Walkthrough

Main entrance to the Warner Bros studio

Overall, we thought the Warner Bros studio tour was well organized. After arriving, we waited in a lounge type area for our designated time slot before beginning the tour. A brief welcome movie in an intimate cinema setting introduced us to what we could expect on the day ahead.

When the movie concluded, we immediately met our guide and he brought us to the large electric powered cart we used to get around the studio. We had about 10 people on our tour including us so it was a very nice small group size. As our guide drove, he’d point out specific things around the immediate area so we always knew what we were looking at.

A golf cart waiting to take groups of tourists around the Warners Bros set

One of the most important things to remember is this a live working studio, which means several tv shows and movies are being filed at the time of your tour. But this also means no two tours will be the same because each time slot may plot a different route through the grounds based on filming schedules.

For this reason, you are not allowed to wander off a rogue mission to find famous people and the tour guides will keep a very close eye on the group.

You can expect the tour to take approximately 3 hours. This includes a 2 hour guided portion and a 1 hour self-guided tour at Studio 48. You can take pictures, but only at certain allocated times. Your tour guide will inform you throughout the entire tour where you can or can not take photos.

1. Backlots And Sound Stages

Empty streets on a movie set at Warner Bros

Warner Bros is home to 10 backlots spread across 110 acres. A backlot is a permeant exterior building used for outdoor scenes in movies and tv shows. Think the old west or New York City buildings. One example is the alleyway where Tobey Maguire hangs upside down as Spiderman to kiss Mary-Jane. That same alley and brick building surrounding has also bee used in other major blockbuster movies.

Here are the notable backlots at Warner Bros:

  • Brownstone Street – Used in ER ,  Pretty Little Liars ,  Looney Toons and Back in Action
  • Midwest Street – Used in Stars Hollow from  Gilmore Girls and Rosewood from  Pretty Little Liars
  • New York Street – Used in A Star is Born ,  Whatever Happened to Baby Jane ,  ER ,  The Big Bang Theory ,  The Last Samurai  and  Blade Runner

We found it interesting to note that while backlots were once widely used in cinema, the use of backlots has declined as movies began shooting with actors physically on location and CGI technology has rapidly advanced.

Outside view of Stage 26 on Avenue E at Warner Bros studios

Sound stages are very large sound-proof warehouse like buildings where many of the major movies film scenes that are not on location. Entire movie sets are constructed inside these buildings and can stay in place for as long as necessary. The entire series of Friends was filmed inside studio 24 and Saito’s Castle scenes from Inception were filmed inside Stage 16. When we visited, Warner Bros had about 30 sound stages and we won’t give anymore away!

On the outside of every stage building is a plaque showing each of the movies and tv shows filmed inside that particular stage. You’ll be able to go inside and walk around on stage to view the set of a currently running tv show. On our visit, we went inside the full sized apartment of Lucifer and we were told Denzel Washington was on the premises shooting scenes for a movie. There are no photos allowed inside the sound stages.

2. Friends Fountain

Two people sitting on the Friends couch in front of the famous fountain

One of the biggest highlights for our group was the stop at the Friends fountain. This was the actual couch and fountain used in the opening credits. It has since been moved from its original location, but it was really fun getting photos in such an iconic spot.

3. Stage 48

Man accepting an acting award in Hollywood

Stage 48 is a very interesting part of the tour. It’s called script to screen which means you get an insight into what happens at the pre-production, production and post-production stages of making a movie. It’s definitely another aspect of filming making that gets over looked by the average movie watcher.

This part of the Warner Bros studio tour is self-guided and completely interactive. You’ll learn about editing, sound, casting and even green screen for CGI. A movie can not be made without any of these elements. While this is a self-led section of the tour, our guide was around to answer any questions.

There is also a section where you can ride Harry Potter’s Firebolt broom or Batman’s Batpod with a green screen behind it. A guide will instruct your to cast a spell or turn left as you watch yourself on the monitor. This of course is being filmed and you can buy a video souvenir, but they aren’t cheap and we personally did not buy one. Mark found it difficult to get into character because he didn’t have the full batsuit shouting ‘Where’s the trigger?!” at Bane in a deep harsh voice.

Our personal favorite spot in Studio 48 was the sound engineer insight called “Art of Sound.” A guide will show you how sound was composed in space for the movie Gravity and it’s truly fascinating. This part has since been expanded since we visited and it’s one place you don’t want to miss.

You can also hold a shiny Oscar like in our photo above when Mark won his Best Actor award from the 1950’s.

Travel Tip : It’s easy to rush through this section, but take your time and read as much as possible. This was one of our favorite stops on our tour.

4. Central Perk

Exterior view of Central Perk from Friends

Fans of the tv show Friends will enjoy the entire authentic set of Central Perk cafe. You can take a seat on the famous sofa, order coffee from imaginary Gunther and maybe even pretend that you are also being paid $1 million per episode!

Two people sitting on the famous couch in Central Park at Warner Bros

With a total of 236 episodes, Friends has to be regarded as one of the most iconic sitcoms of all time. It’s a classic feel good background noise at worst and an engaging emotional rollercoaster at best. It’s one of the only American sitcoms that used to get replayed over and over again in the UK and still widely adored.

Netflix even paid over $100 million for rights to stream re-runs between 2014 and 2019. Not bad for a show that finished all the way back in 2004. # timeless

5. The Big Bang Theory

Empty hallway and apartment 4B from the Big Bang Theory

Moving swiftly onto another show where you can imagine earning a cool million per episode is one of America’s favorites, The Big Bang Theory . It’s one of the longest running multi camera sitcoms in history with almost 280 episodes across 12 seasons.

Woman sitting on Sheldon and Leonard's couch from the Big Bang Theory

Imagine how much time each of the main actors playing Sheldon, Leonard, Raj, Penny and Howard spent filming in front of live audiences at Warner Bros. Much like the Central Perk set, you can visit the Caltech physics department cafeteria, Apartment 4A and the famous broken elevator.

6. DC Universe Exhibit

Wonder Woman's costume from the 2017 film

If you’re a superhero fan, the DC Universe is what you’ll get to see at Warner Brothers. Exhibits include Batman’s Batcave, the actual Arkham Asylum gates, Wonder Woman’s study, Superman’s office and Aquaman’s lair. This isn’t the most exciting part of the tour because it’s more like a photo opt, but it does allow you to appreciate other elements of what makes movies so engaging.

Man holding the Trident of Neptune from Aquaman

In addition to the main exhibits, you can also walk around to see other displays of costumes and accessories. Some of these include Diana Prince’s Lasso and Arthur Curry’s armored suit. Costumes, weapons and design are vital to every movie and we think they don’t often get the recognition they deserve.

Travel Tip : If you’re a Marvel fan, it’s a subsidiary of the Walt Disney Company so you won’t see them at Warner Bros.

Close up view of the Bathammer at Warner Bros

The Batcave is an entire area dedicated to the caped crusader. Personally, we love the Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale Dark Knight Trilogy so getting to see the tumbler and the Batpod was pretty cool. This area is very dark and looks more like a strange car showroom with purple lights, but the exhibits do have some good information for light reading.

The Batmobile close up from the Batman trilogy

Also inside the Batcave are replicas of the Neutron Bomb from DKR and older Bat mobiles like the Bathammer from the Clooney, Keaton and Kilmer eras. Even the Batsuit Christian Bale wore is on display.

7. Harry Potter

Several Harry Potter costumes on display

Another stop on the Warner Bros studio tour is the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts . You’ll walk a one way route around all things Hogwarts, Dumbledore’s Army, Newt Scamander and Grindelwald.

There are numerous photo opportunities such as sitting inside Harry’s cupboard under the stairs on Privet Drive, sitting under the sorting hat in the Great Hall and repotting baby Mandrakes in Herbology.

The Marauder's Map from Harry Potter on display

Now, we will say this is not like the Harry Potter tour in London where you can see the film sets. And we wouldn’t recommend choosing Warner Bros based solely on your love for Harry Potter. But what you do get to see is authentic props like Dobby the House Elf, the sorting hat plus real costumes worn by most of the main characters.

All of your favorite wizard outfits are also on display. It’s fun to imagine the actors being there in person or putting on one of the costumes yourself, picking up a wand and shouting “Expelliarmus.”

Real story boards from the famous Harry Potter films

The most interesting part for us personally was being able to see some of the original storyboards. It’s fascinating to see how the drawings compare to the end product on screen.

8. Old Movie Props

At some point during your tour, you’ll also get the chance to see some really cool props used in previous movies. Our golf cart brought us to a warehouse filled with amazing items we’ve seen on screen over the years. For us, this was one of the best stops on the Warner Bros studio tour.

Think you could recognize the 2 faded red leather chairs from the Matrix ?

What about the armor worn by Tom Cruise and Ken Watanabe in the Last Samura i?

All of these and so much more can be found inside the prop storage building. We were lucky enough to see the building next door with it’s shutter open… and what was inside?

Phoebe's taxi from Friends and Austin Power's Shaguar parked in a garage

Only Phoebe’s taxi from Friends and Austin Power’s Shaguar!

You’ll be guaranteed to see props from some of your favorite movies when walking around this building. But many will be a surprise because there’s so much to see.

Tour guide pointing out highlights on a movie set at Warner bros studio

If you’ve gotten this far in our guide, we’ll take a wild guess and say you’re a bit of a movie buff. So are we and the best part about our tour, was our amazing guide. Erik set the benchmark for being a bona fide movie buff and he was incredibly knowledgable about everything we visited. We highly recommend you ask questions throughout your tour to maximize your time on set.

What’s The Best Studio Tour In LA?

Overall, we loved our Warner Bros studio tour and genuinely though they put a lot of effort into allowing us to see behind the scenes of our favorite tv shows and movies. And now that you know what to expect on this tour, it’s important to know about the other options before booking a tour.

There are 4 major studios to choose between in Los Angeles:

  • Warner Bros
  • Sony Pictures

For the basic studio tours, the prices are very similar, but what you see will be drastically different. So we created the graph below to help you understand the highlights of each company:

Detailed chart comparing the four movie studio tours in Los Angeles, California

The major stand out in this graph is that Universal is more of an amusement park compared to a studio tour. So if you want to really go behind the scenes, we’d recommend Warner Bros, Sony Pictures or Paramount.

This is the exact tour we booked:

Check out the reviews for yourself and see if it’s something you’d like to do as well. You can also visit the official website here to learn about the other deluxe tours offered if you wanted even more of a movie experience.

This exact studio tour is also included on both the Go City Los Angeles All-Inclusive and Explorer Pass. These passes can save you money if you want to visit several of LA’s top attractions. Click here to see all the other attractions included on the pass.

How To Get To Warner Bros Studio Tour

Red sign point the way to the beginning of a studio tour in Hollywood

Warner Bros studio is located in Burbank, Los Angeles. The easiest way to find it on a map is by looking to the north west corner of Griffith Park.

LA is huge and is well known for its traffic congestion. If you have your own vehicle and don’t mind driving across the city, there is an underground parking garage right underneath the WB building. This is what we did because we had our vehicle in LA since we were on a road trip. However, driving in LA is not much fun so consider arriving by another means if you’re not the most comfortable driver.

No matter if your hotel is in Santa Monica, Beverly Hills or Hollywood, your most efficient route is to drive up Cahuenga Boulevard. Take the right turn at Barham Boulevard which transitions into W. Olive Ave. Turn right onto West Riverside Drive and right onto Warner Boulevard. From here, just follow the signs for tour parking.

If you don’t have your own vehicle or you’d prefer to leave it parked at the hotel, you can use the metro or a ride sharing app. The cheapest option is the Metro B Line (Red) which stops at Universal City/Studios. This is the closest you can get by metro and your options are either walk 2.4 miles or take a Lyft/Uber. You can also take a ride sharing app the entire way for more convenience, but it will cost more.

What we like : We were impressed by the sheer scale and magnitude of the Warner Bros studio grounds. Our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable about the industry and always had informative answers to our questions. We thought the tour would be more about sets and backlots, but we really enjoyed the costumes, props and productions aspect. Parking was also not an issue thanks to the multi-story underground lot (even though you had to pay extra for it).

What we don’t like : The main downside to the tour at Warner Bros was the fact tours leave every 30 minutes so it can sometimes feel like a conveyor belt of tourists and you’ll run into many other groups throughout. Because it was very busy, we thought the tour lacked a personal touch and could benefit from a few freebies or take homes. Our group moved through the DC Universe and Harry Potter exhibits quickly which made it difficult to read all the informational boards. We also think the extra charge for parking was a bit harsh because we had already paid for two tour tickets.

Is the Warner Bros studio tour worth it? Yes, the think the Warner Bros tour is worth it. After some research we chose Warner Bros because their basic studio tour was longer than any competitor and they had some really great recent reviews. However, if you don’t have an interest in Harry Potter, the DC Universe, Friends or The Big Bang Theory, you might want to consider choosing another studio tour.

They tell you to get there a half hour early, our tour time was 1100, we waited until after 1140 for the video to begin

Thanks for sharing your experience, Terry. The FAQ’s page on the Warner Bros Hollywood Tour site does state “plan to arrive 30 minutes prior to your tour” so you can find a parking spot, check in and pass through the security checks before your time slot. Hope you enjoyed the tour!

Warner Bros.? Paramount? Universal? How to choose the best Hollywood studio tour for you

W hen it comes to L.A. outings, the movie studio tour can be easy for locals to overlook. After all, surrounded by Hollywood productions, the entire city can feel like a stage. And if you've been on backlots or know people who work in the film and television industries, the magic of the moving picture may already be demystified.

And yet there's still much to adore about an afternoon jaunt through a filmmaking campus.

In a city that's too often unjustly stereotyped as favoring the new, the Hollywood studio reminds us of how much history — and, specifically, pop-culture myth-making — is rooted in and around Los Angeles. There in these spaces, you might see a spot where James Dean once stood, roll past the "Psycho" house, step into a partly dressed soundstage or walk through a sound-making Foley factory. Our studios remain working palaces dedicated to crafting dreams.

That all may sound romanticized — the reality of " making it " in Hollywood is increasingly challenging, and the studio itself is threatened by a global, digital and consolidating production industry — but it's only meant to note what's at risk.

For me, the studio tour was once a go-to destination when out-of-towners came to visit. These days, I like to revisit one every few years, just as a reminder to remain uncynical and to marvel at the talent and cinematic art that this region has invented. And each tour has a slightly different flavor. Whether it's animation history you crave or museum-like installations, there's a tour for every kind of film buff.

Universal Studios

Best for: Seekers of thrills and cinematic magic

It's not an exaggeration to say that if there was no tram tour on the Universal Studios lot, there would be no Universal Studios theme park. Sixty years ago, the backlot tram tour began as a way, in part, to increase commissary sales as tourists liked the opportunity to dine on the lot. Quickly, however, those running the tour had a realization that every studio trek has to confront: looking at giant soundstages or deserted sets is fun for only so long.

Thus, Universal Studios pioneered the concept of melding the tour with various attractions — cinematic illusions such as a flash flood, a runaway train or, in the late ’80s, an earthquake simulator. Today, the tram tour — now officially designated as the World-Famous Studio Tour — is but one part of a larger theme park, designed to show us mini-attractions such as an encounter with a shark from "Jaws" or a 3-D ride alongside King Kong. Yes, there are backlot sets, including instantly recognizable locations from "Back to the Future," "Pyscho," "Desperate Housewives" and, most recently, "Nope." But this 60-minute journey is more than a behind-the-scenes look. Instead, the focus is on the emotion and excitement of movie-making mirages.

There is even a lesser known VIP option to exploring the park. Expect to spend around $400 per person for it, but the perks include a longer tour with the ability to walk around the sets, venture into a prop house and likely set foot on a soundstage.

Universal Studios, 100 Universal City Plaza. The tram tour is included with theme park admission, which varies per day but ranges from $109 to $149 per person. For more information , visit universalstudioshollywood.com .

Warner Bros.

Best for: Fans of interactive exhibits, Central Perk selfies and everything "Harry Potter"

Warner Bros. has always had a showman's approach to its studio tour, opening its gates to the public in the mid-'60s to herald the arrival of "The Great Race" with cars, props and a behind-the-scenes featurette to accompany a backlot venture. It's a mindset that continues today, as the Warner Bros. Studio Tour aims to walk the line between pure history and entertainment, with numerous recent expansions into interactive installations. Come for the tour, stay for a potion-making mini-game to celebrate the "Harry Potter" franchise or the ability to pose with multiple Batmobiles.

The standard tour offers about a 60-minute tram outing. Expect to stop and walk among its suburban town, where guides will point out filming locations from "Friends," "The Big Bang Theory," "Gilmore Girls," "Cool Hand Luke" and more, as well as to see the wilds of San Fernando Valley, including a forest area that's been used in the likes of "Jurassic Park," "True Blood" and "Pee-wee's Big Adventure." There's also a Turner Classic Movies-themed tour , if you lean more toward cinematic classics such as "Casablanca" and "Rebel Without a Cause."

But what truly separates Warner Bros. from its competitors is recent investments in a re-creation of the "Friends" Central Perk Café — yes, you can dine there — and its surrounding museum-like exhibits. Interactive tables will allow you to explore the actors of Warner Bros. past and present, while special effects stations can add or subtract digital accouterments with the movement of a knob. There's up-sell green screen photo ops, short films and demonstrations of motion-capture technology. A secondary stop pulls from tricks from the theme park industry, with photo ops pegged to DC superhero films and the "Potter" franchise, including the ability to be assigned a personality by the latter's wizardly Sorting Hat.

Warner Bros. Studio Tour, 3400 Warner Blvd., Burbank. The standard tour starts at $73 ; Southern California residents receive a $12 discount through Dec. 17 , with deluxe and VIP offerings providing additional exploration of the studio's backlot. For more information , visit wbstudiotour.com.

Walt Disney Studios

Best for: Disney history buffs and animation lovers

If Disneyland idealizes American stories and Western takes on classic fairy tales, then a trip to the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank grounds them in a bit more reality. But it is still Disney, so expect a little bit of folkloric mythologizing, especially when it comes to company founder Walt Disney.

A centerpiece of the 2½-hour tour — open only to members of the Disney fan club D23, including those with a free membership — is the meticulous restoration of Disney's five-room office suite. It's a treasure trove of items belonging to Disney — or re-creations of them, such as a reproduction of the special Oscar he won for “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” with a normal-sized statuette and seven smaller ones. Marvel, too, at the Disneyland master plan, with nods to what were then recently completed projects such as It's a Small World. The office is preserved as it would have looked at the time of Disney's death in 1966. (Note: At the time of publication, the office was due for renovation in late 2024.)

Additionally, no other tour is as dedicated to the art of animation as this one. No real surprise, of course, but guests will visit the original animation building — where "Cinderella" and "Lady and the Tramp," among many others, were created — and learn about Disney's many advancements to the medium. Discover, too, the unique construction of the lot, and clever efforts to conceal precious hand-drawn animation cels from the sun. The tour also includes a stop at the Walt Disney Archives, the working research lab dedicated to preserving all things Disney.

The Walt Disney Studios Official Tour, 500 S . Buena Vista St., Burbank. D23 members are allowed to purchase two tickets; ticket cost varies by membership level but starts at $79. For more information , visit d23.com/upcoming-events.

Sony Pictures

Best for: Game show devotees and a vision of Oz

The Times first wrote about a tour of the famed MGM Studios lot in the late ’60s. Times, culture and ownership have changed, and the now Sony Pictures Studio Tour no longer, for instance, provides a look at Esther Williams' private swimming pool. Today, it begins with a re-creation of the "Seinfeld" set and props from the "Men in Black" films. The Culver City lot still offers the occasional nod to its past, via architectural allusions to MGM's history or artist Tony Tasset's 94-foot, 2012-constructed rainbow that references "The Wizard of Oz," which was filmed at the locale.

A signature of the modern Sony Pictures tour is a stop on the sets of venerable game shows such as "Jeopardy!" and "Wheel of Fortune," provided they're not in the midst of filming. But even if they are, you'll still have the opportunity to stand before a green screen and take home a "Jeopardy!" picture as a memento.

You'll also likely get a look at various working aspects of the studio. On the day I visited, we strolled through the sound production offices to see how Foley artists operate. Imagine a darkened, cramped room that looks like someone's garage filled with old clothes, crusty leaves, an assortment of footwear and broken machinery.

It was a brief chance to play, as guests stepped among different floor types to create various sounds. We also spent a moment in an overdub room, mimicking the creation of white noise from a crowd.

"Breaking Bad" and Ghostbusters" fans will snare a look at vehicles used in productions. For a different perspective, schedule one of Sony's evening tours.

Sony Pictures, 3990 Overland Ave ., Culver City. Tours start at $55. For more information, visit sonypicturesstudiostours.com.

Paramount Pictures

Best for: Those looking for Hollywood nostalgia

Paramount dispenses with the slickness and some of the how-to's of other tours, focusing instead on its historic Hollywood locale on Melrose Avenue. A sense of grandeur permeates the lot, thanks in large part to the ornate archway of the Bronson Gate — which was a filming location for "Sunset Boulevard." On Paramount's standard tour, you'll learn how Alfred Hitchcock nearly destroyed a soundstage to film "Rear Window," and glimpse the lot's expansive "blue sky tank," which can create oceanic illusions. On the day I visited, we explored a soundstage dressed for Taylor Tomlinson's "After Midnight," and paused to watch crews ready the lot's New York streets for filming.

At a prop warehouse specifically geared for the tour, one can step on a transporter from "Star Trek Beyond." Also present: costumes for the "Halo" series, a full-scale Bumblebee from the "Transformers" films and mushrooms and an "egg mobile" from the "Sonic the Hedgehog" movies. This is more of a gallery-like setup than it is a venture into a working prop house.

The two-hour Paramount tour is relatively intimate, featuring a small group and a tour guide armed with an iPad. Higher-priced options offer a look into more operational archival areas of the lot, but as it stands, it's primarily a chance to see a historic Hollywood lot, one potentially on the verge of significant change .

Paramount Pictures, 5515 Melrose Ave., Los Angeles. Tour start at $65. For more information, visit paramountstudiotour.com.

Why Is Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) Up 5.7% Since Last Earnings Report?

September 06, 2024 — 11:31 am EDT

Written by Zacks Equity Research for Zacks  ->

It has been about a month since the last earnings report for Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD). Shares have added about 5.7% in that time frame, outperforming the S&P 500.

Will the recent positive trend continue leading up to its next earnings release, or is Warner Bros. Discovery due for a pullback? Before we dive into how investors and analysts have reacted as of late, let's take a quick look at its most recent earnings report in order to get a better handle on the important catalysts.

Warner Bros. Discovery Q2 Earnings Miss, Ad Sales Fall Y/Y

Warner Bros. Discovery reported second-quarter 2024 loss of $4.07 per share, significantly wider than the Zacks Consensus Estimate of a loss of 18 cents. The company had incurred a loss of 51 cents in the year-ago quarter.  Revenues decreased 6.2% year over year to $9.71 billion, which missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 3.5%. Advertising revenues decreased 3.5% year over year to $2.43 billion. Distribution revenues dropped 5% year over year to $4.87 billion. Content revenues declined 13.8% year over year to $2.1 billion. Other revenues were $295 million, up 14.3% from the year-ago quarter.

Top-Line Details

Studios (25.2% of total revenues) reported revenues of $2.44 billion, down 5.1% from the year-ago quarter. Revenues decreased 4% ex-FX from the prior-year quarter on a pro forma combined basis. Within the segment, content revenues fell 6% ex-FX to $2.23 billion. TV revenues declined 27% ex-FX, primarily due to the timing of initial telecast productions as well as lower licensing sales. Games revenues declined 41% ex-FX, primarily due to the weak performance of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League this year compared with the strong performance of Hogwarts Legacy in the prior year. Theatrical revenues increased 19% ex-FX, primarily due to higher home entertainment revenues from Dune: Part Two , and higher box office carryover due to the performance of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire , which was released at the end of March. Other revenues increased 20% ex-FX, primarily driven by the June 2023 opening of Warner Bros. Studio Tour Tokyo. Networks revenues (54.3% of total revenues) decreased 8.4% on a year-over-year basis to $5.27 billion. The AT&T SportsNet exit negatively impacted the growth rate by approximately 200 basis points (bps). Within the segment, distribution revenues decreased 8% ex-FX, primarily due to a 9% decline in domestic linear pay-TV subscribers and an approximately 300 bps impact from the AT&T SportsNet exit, partially offset by a 5% increase in domestic affiliate rates. Advertising revenues decreased 9% ex-FX, primarily due to a decline of 13% in domestic network audiences and the soft advertising market in the United States. Content revenues increased 5% ex-FX, primarily driven by the timing of third-party licensing deals, partially offset by lower inter-segment content licensing to DTC. DTC revenues (26.4% of revenues) declined 6% from the year-ago quarter to $2.56 billion.  Within the segment, distribution revenues increased 1% ex-FX, primarily driven by a 7% rise in subscribers following the launch of Max in Latin America in the first quarter of 2024 and in Europe in the second quarter of 2024, partially offset by continued domestic linear wholesale subscriber declines. Advertising revenues surged 99% ex-FX, primarily driven by higher domestic Max engagement and ad-lite subscriber growth. Content revenues plunged 70%, primarily due to lower volume of third-party licensing deals.

Subscriber Details

WBD ended second-quarter 2024 with 103.3 million global DTC subscribers, which increased 3.6 million sequentially.  Global DTC ARPU increased 4% ex-FX to $8.00, primarily driven by the growth of the ad tier domestically, along with the continued subscriber mix shift from linear wholesale to other distribution channels, partially offset by a rise in lower ARPU international markets.

Operating Details

In the second quarter, selling, general and administrative expenses decreased 3.9% from the year-ago quarter’s levels to $2.46 billion. Adjusted EBITDA declined 16.5% from the year-ago quarter’s levels to $1.79 billion.  Second-quarter 2024 cash provided by operating activities came in at $1.22 billion compared with $2.01 billion in the prior-year period. The company reported a free cash flow of $976 million compared with a free cash flow of $1.72 billion in the prior-year period.  The company reported an operating loss of $10.28 billion compared with an operating loss of $906 million in the year-ago quarter. Net loss available to Warner Bros. Discovery was $10 billion, which includes a $9.1 billion non-cash goodwill impairment charge from the Networks segment, as well as $2.1 billion of pre-tax acquisition-related amortization of intangibles, content fair value step-up and restructuring expenses. The goodwill impairment was triggered in response to the difference between market capitalization and book value, continued softness in the U.S. linear advertising market and uncertainty related to affiliate and sports rights renewals, including the NBA.

Balance Sheet

As of Jun 30, 2024, cash & cash equivalents were $3.61 billion compared with $3.78 billion as of Mar 31, 2024. WBD repaid $1.8 billion of debt during the reported quarter and ended the quarter with $41.4 billion of gross debt and 4x net leverage. WBD purchased $3.4 billion of debt for $2.6 billion through a tender offer funded by cash on hand and a €1.5 billion senior notes offering. As of Jun 30, 2024, the average duration of the company's outstanding debt was 13.7 years with an average cost of 4.6%.  The company maintains an undrawn $6 billion revolving credit facility.

Q2 Highlights

The company successfully launched Max and migrated subscribers to the new platform across Europe, including new market launches in France and Belgium. Max is now available in 65 countries and territories. The 2024 CNN Presidential Debate was the highest-rated linear program in the history of CNN. TNT Sports continued to strengthen its sports portfolio with multi-year domestic agreements for BIG EAST men's and women's college basketball, the French Open, Mountain West college football and the College Football Playoffs. Adult Swim’s second-quarter primetime ratings grew 14% year over year, its third consecutive quarter of primetime growth.

How Have Estimates Been Moving Since Then?

It turns out, estimates review have trended downward during the past month.

The consensus estimate has shifted 2557.14% due to these changes.

Currently, Warner Bros. Discovery has a nice Growth Score of B, though it is lagging a lot on the Momentum Score front with an F. However, the stock was allocated a grade of B on the value side, putting it in the second quintile for this investment strategy.

Overall, the stock has an aggregate VGM Score of B. If you aren't focused on one strategy, this score is the one you should be interested in.

Estimates have been broadly trending downward for the stock, and the magnitude of these revisions looks promising. Notably, Warner Bros. Discovery has a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). We expect an in-line return from the stock in the next few months.

Performance of an Industry Player

Warner Bros. Discovery is part of the Zacks Broadcast Radio and Television industry. Over the past month, Fox (FOXA), a stock from the same industry, has gained 2.9%. The company reported its results for the quarter ended June 2024 more than a month ago.

Fox reported revenues of $3.09 billion in the last reported quarter, representing a year-over-year change of +2%. EPS of $0.90 for the same period compares with $0.88 a year ago.

Fox is expected to post earnings of $1.13 per share for the current quarter, representing a year-over-year change of +3.7%. Over the last 30 days, the Zacks Consensus Estimate has changed -5.5%.

Fox has a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) based on the overall direction and magnitude of estimate revisions. Additionally, the stock has a VGM Score of B.
