An Itinerary for a lush road trip in Kerala, India

Brightly coloured houses, reticent but smiling locals, and low-lying clouds. Undulating Tea Estates spread out as far as the eye can see, mystic spice plantations and coffee farms spread over acres, walls covered with bright red hibiscus flowers, and roads lined with sunflowers. A road trip in Kerala is a delightful assault to the senses – the colours, the smiles, and the landscapes are bound to leave the traveller in you reeling with joy.

Kerala Road Trip Itinerary

Suggested itinerary for a road trip in Kerala

Here’s a suggested itinerary for a road trip in Kerala before I divulge the route we took and provide tips and tricks to making the most of a road trip to Kerala in 2 weeks:

  • Tea Estates and hills at Munnar or Wayanad (3-4 days)
  • Spice Plantations and wildlife at Thekkady (3 days)
  • Backwaters and houseboats at Kumarakom or Alleppey (3 days)
  • Beaches at Varkala or Kovalam (3 days)
  • City life in Kochi, with a day trip to Athirappilly (2 days)

Our itinerary for a road trip in Kerala

Of course the itinerary charted above is flexible. You can weed out places based on personal preferences and the amount of time at hand. We had just 10 days in Kerala, so we decided to skip the beaches of Varkala and Kovalam. Here’s the route we followed on our road trip in Kerala:

Budgeting for your road trip in Kerala

Let’s start with the logistics first – car rental and expenses. The overall cost of this road trip will depend on the city of departure and the hotels you choose. Kerala boasts of some stunning hotels and you can choose everything from bespoke hideaways to homestays, depending on your budget and personal preferences. Here’s a list of expenses other than accommodation

  • Domestic flights to Coimbatore/Kochi cost under £100/INR 10,000 from most cities in India
  • A rental car will set you back by approximately £20-£30/INR 2000-3000 per day depending on the car you choose.
  • We spent £45/INR 4500 on fuel for a 10 day road trip. This amount will increase if you decide to drive down to Kovalam.
  • It’s easy to eat for less than £5/INR 500 at little eateries across Kerala. They serve delectable food and have a variety of local delicacies on offer. There are also several fine-dining restaurants in the area and some of our favourites are mentioned in the article below.

Driving and Renting a car for your road trip in Kerala

You know just how much we love driving around in new places and this was no exception. Driving in Kerala is much easier than Ladakh (our last road trip in India). Roads are in good shape and drivers are not aggressive. However do beware than this route featured hilly drives and hairpin bends by the dozen, so drive yourself only if you have previous experience driving in hills. Having said that, we loved driving in Kerala. We would recommend it if you’re a seasoned driver who enjoys road trips.

We would definitely recommend renting with an Indian rental company while you are in India as they understand the nuances of the market well. We’ve rented with Myles Cars in India before and enjoyed their service, so we decided to stick to the same provider this time around too. We picked up our car –  Mahindra XUV 500 – from Coimbatore airport. It was

Best time to visit Kerala

The months between November and February are perfect to visit Kerala. Expect moderate temperatures and lush green estates. Of course these are peak months, so expected higher rates and crowds at popular places. We wanted to avoid the tourist hordes, so we visited during March, which is a shoulder month. It was perfect but some days did tend to get extremely hot and humid, especially in the backwaters.

July and August are popular with tourists too as this is peak monsoon season. Kerala’s monsoons are special – expect an abundance of greenery and beautiful waterfalls.

Day by day itinerary for a road trip in Kerala

Day 1: fly into coimbatore and drive to munnar.

This day is reserved for arriving in Munnar, the first stop on your road trip of Kerala. Fly into Kochi or Coimbatore. We chose Coimbatore International Airport because it is serviced by Myles.  We picked up are rental car at the airport and kick started our road trip.

Roads are in great shape and there are lots of supermarkets and restaurants on the way. Stock up on snacks, fruits for your road trip. There’s no need to go overboard as hot food is readily available during the length of this road trip in Kerala. Stop at Thoovanam Falls on the way  – the gurgling waterfall is worth a pitstop only if you’re visiting during monsoon months (July & August)

The scenery will begin to change dramatically as you inch closer to Munnar. The searing sun will give way to a nip in the air. Winding roads punctuated with undulating tea plantations and rolling hills will welcome you to the area.

Accommodation in Munnar

Munnar town is quite crowded and chaotic. We suggest staying in a hotel in a village called Chinnakanal. The village is a convenient forty minute drive from Munnar. Here it is possible to stay in a hotel or homestay in the midst of gorgeous tea plantations. Two hotels that boast of great views in the area are Terrace Greens and Club Mahindra. We chose the former for our stay in Munnar – rooms at Terrace Greens aren’t luxurious but they are spacious and well-equipped. Food is tasty. However the lack of wifi in the rooms lets it down.

The hotel is nestled in the countryside, so make sure you stock up on provisions beforehand. Munnar is twenty kilometres away and Surianelli village, which has a large bustling market, is just 5 kilometres away

Days 1-4: Explore Munnar and Chinnakanal

There are lots of things to do in the area but waking up to the sight of endless tea plantations would have to be one of my favourite experiences in Munnar. Low hanging clouds float over verdant tea estates, lending magic to the proceedings.

But we weren’t just exploring tea estates or photographing them. Here’s a list of other things to see and do in the area:

  •  Anayirankal Dam and Lake: a picturesque boating and picnic spot, Anayirankal Dam and Lake provides photo opportunities by the dozen.
  • Mattupetty Dam and Lake: one of the most popular sites in the area, it tends to get quite crowded. We didn’t love the viewing area but really enjoyed driving along the lake.
  • Top Station and Echo Point: Combine your trip to Mattupetty Dam with a drive to Echo Point and Top Station. This makes for an incredibly scenic drive. Expect gorgeous views of the Western Ghats and magical low-lying clouds everywhere.
  • Kolukkumalai tea estate: A bumpy ride gets you to the world’s highest tea plantation, where tea is picked and processed in a traditional fashion. Kolukkumalai is gorgeous and definitely worth a visit.
  • A traditional tea factory: It should be illegal to leave Munnar without visiting a traditional tea factory. Watch tea leaves being painstakingly picked and processed into high-quality tea. Make sure you pick a bag or two for friends and family back home.

Day 5: Drive from Munnar to Thekkady

After luxuriating in the green environs of Munnar for a few days, it is time to continue with your road trip of Kerala. Start early as the drive from Munnar to Thekkady is one of the prettiest ones – you will want to stop for photographs every few kilometres.

The drive begins, quite predictably, with endless stretches of tea estates. Gradually these get replaced by spice plantations and coffee farms. Roads snaking through Kerala’s Cardamom Hills are lined with bright red hibiscus flowers and chrome sunflowers. Every once in a while, purple wild flowers make an appearance, as if to add even more colour to the landscape.  Check in to your hotel on reaching Thekkady.

Accommodation in Thekkady

Try to opt for an experiential hotel in the area. Choosing a hotel that in the midst of a spice plantation amplifies the experience manifold. We stayed in Shalimar Spice Garden . Shalimar Spice Garden is a rustic yet luxurious hideaway in Thekkady. The hotel is located in the middle of 30 acres of spice plantations. Rooms are well-equipped, spacious, and boast of huge balconies. The hotel boasts of a gorgeous pool area dotted with hammocks and swings. The in-house restaurant serves delectable food. We loved our stay at Shalimar Spice Garden and would recommend it wholeheartedly.

Days 5-8: Explore Thekkady and Periyar National Park

Spend your days in Thekkady exploring its rich spice plantations, the Periyar National Park, and its surroundings. Here are a few of our favourite things to do in Thekkady on your road trip of Kerala:

Visiting Periyar National Park

Boat tours are coveted at the park because tickets are limited. Apparently you can book tickets online but despite multiple attempts, we were unable to do that.  If you want to get on a boat safari at Periyar National Park, then plan on getting up early. Get to the entrance of Periyar National Reserve by 5.45 am, park your car, get your entrance tickets (INR 65 for Indian Nationals and £3.5/INR300 for foreign nationals) and board the bus operated by the Forest Reserve. If you get onboard the first bus, chances are you’ll get a ticket for the much coveted boat ride (£2/INR150) . This is what we did but to be honest, we didn’t see much (except for a couple of stray birds). The Periyar Lake is pretty early in the morning. But the boat safari at Periyar National Park is definitely not worth the effort, especially if you’ve been to other destinations rich in wildlife such as South Africa or Australia. If you want to visit the National Park, opt for a Jeep Safari at Gavi instead.

Other than visiting Periyar National Park, here are a few of our favourite things to do in the area.

  • Chellarkovil: The area boasts of waterfalls and cascades during monsoon season. There was no water at the waterfalls when we visited. But the sleepy village of Chellarkovil makes for a great drive and offers sweeping views of the neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu too. It’s also a great picnic spot, so make sure you pack a snack or two.
  • There are some great treks in Kurushmala Hills – it’s better to opt for guided treks in the area
  • The bustling town of Kumily is the gateway to scenic drives in the Periyar Valley. Pandikuzhi is a great place to stop for a picnic or a few photographs.

Periyar National Park road trip in Kerala

Day 8: Drive from Thekkady to Kumarakom

This drive isn’t the most scenic of the lot as it passes through lots of busy towns and chaotic villages. If you enjoy hiking, make sure you go for a short hike to Eagle Eock in the village of Parunthumpara on the way to Peerumedu . It offers a vantage point from where one can drink in views of the neighbouring valleys, mountains, and villages. Also try stopping in one of the villages on the way for a meal or a cup of coffee – experience everyday life in a village, explore Kerala’s pastel churches, or photographs its brightly-coloured houses. Upon reaching Kumarakom, you will start spotting glimpses of Kerala’s iconic backwaters and lagoons. Check into your hotel and prepare to be smitten by this quaint village of canals.

Accommodation in Kumarakom

The backwaters of Kerala boast of some stunning hotels. On the recommendation of dozens of friends and readers, we booked a pool villa at CGH Earth Coconut Lagoon Resort . And we couldn’t be happier about it. It is definitely one of the prettiest hotels we’ve EVER stayed at (and we’ve stayed in thousands!). You can park your car at their private parking at Kumarakom Jetty and board their boat, which brings you to the hotel. We promise you will fall in love with the hotel almost as soon as you float into the reception area. The hotel complex resembles a traditional village, intersected by canals and lagoons. We chose a room overlooking the backwaters of Kerala – rooms are luxurious and boast of modern amenities. Can’t recommend this one enough!

girl at the iconic backwaters of Kerala at Kumarakom

Days 8-12: Explore the backwaters of Kerala and experience life on a houseboat

The backwaters of Kerala will seduce you in no time. Spend your days taking in the stunning scenery.

  • Go for a languorous canoe ride on Vembanad Lake or a sunset cruise in the backwaters.
  • Treat yourself to a traditional Ayurvedic massage, which is bound to leave you feeling rejuvenated.
  • Savour local delicacies such as Meen Pollichathu (grilled fish) or Karimeen curry (spicy fish curry), and  Sadya (traditional vegetarian feast) at meal times.
  • Go for a bird-watching walk – Kumarakom bird sanctuary is famous for hundreds of species of birds and attracts bird enthusiasts from all around the world.

Spend your last night in Kumarakom on a houseboat. This is an experience like no other. Make sure you choose a traditional houseboat fashioned out of reed, cork, and bamboo. We spent the night on a 1 bedroom houseboat by Spice Coast Cruises and loved the experience. The evening was spent sailing past duck farms, busy villages, and floating shops. We watched the sun set over the backwaters from the comfort of our houseboat. We devoured a three course meal as the day metamorphosed into night. Most of the evening was spent lounging on the boat while staring at the stars. Make the most of it as it will soon be time to drive out of Kumarakom.

Sunset from a houseboat in Kerala

Days 12-15: Fly back or continue to the beaches of Kerala

If you have a few more days in Kerala, you should drive from Kumarakom to the southern tip of the state to explore its beaches. Varkala is a perfect pit stop if you like beach destinations sprinkled with bohemia. If you enjoy classic luxury, then choose a decadent hotel in the coastal town of Kovalam .

We had just 12 days in Kerala, so we drove back to Coimbatore International Airport from Kumarkom and boarded our flight back to New Delhi. You can also spend a night or two in Kochi on your way back to Coimbatore. Make sure you drive to Athirappilly Waterfalls if you’re in Kochi.

The Athirapally Waterfalls need to feature on your itinerary for a road trip in Kerala

That’s it – an idyllic 2 week road trip in Kerala, India. This road trip offers a plethora of panoramas, sights, and cultural experiences – it is bound to leave you rejuvenated! We loved our time in Kerala and can’t wait to go back!

I’m coming to kerala with two friends next month! What was your favorite part of your trip? We are thinking about giving thekady a miss and concentrating on munnar and kumarakom/alleppey, curious to hear your opinion of it we only have a week, what would you cut out of your intinerary!

Hey Sierra,

Our favourite part has to be Kumarakom and the night we spent on the boat house. YEs, we’d give Thekaddy a miss and spend longer in Munnar/Kumarakom

For this whole trip which places did you need to take the inner permit for your vehicle? I am wondering as i am also planning the same roadtrip on this route with Myles. Thank you ?

From my recollection we did have to take permits in different places but don’t really remember how many places. But I do remember that it wasn’t difficult at all and we didn’t have to do anything in advance

Hi Can u guys suggest me best resort in kovalam i am travelling in june with 1 kid

Hey we stayed at CGH Coconut lagoon and can’t fault it 🙂

Credibility of the post is highly appreciable with the benefits are fantastic. Can view the best work of budgeting trip for Kerala, within the single page of this blog. Not needed for guide at all !!

Hi Savi & Vid. I have been closely following you on Instagram and your posts on travel make me jealous. Wish I could go roam the country (leave aside the world) more frequently. I am mesmerized by every post of yours.

Anyways I have been planning a trip to Kerala in December (we shall start from Kochi) for 4 days/3 nights. My friends and family suggested Munnar-Takkady-Kumarkom (1 night stay at a boathouse). We would reach Munnar by afternoon as we would definitely stop for various waterfalls along kochi-munnar route. But we would stay only 1 night in munnar (I wanted to stay 2 days) and leave next day morning around 11 am for tekkady. Do you think this plan can get hectic? Or should we skip Tekkady/Periyar altogether for a more relaxed holiday? Any suggestions on an itinerary? Any places you feel we should not miss around Munnar (like chinna kanal) if we decide to stay there for 2 days?

Your suggestions could be of great help. Please help out!!

Definitely seems hectic – you won’t be able to enjoy at all 🙂 Best to spend 2 days in and around Munnar and then head to Kumarakom

Hi savi and vid

Hey guys, Thank you so much for sharing this information. I really like to visit munnar.

Happy to hear that!

I have plan to go for summer vacation and search for where to go and reached on your blog where I see Kerala is best place for holiday destination and I will plan for kerala in next week. Thanks for sharing amazing content and photos.

Happy to hear that 🙂

Hi Savi and Vid,

I discovered your Youtube channel a while back and was instantly impressed, inspired and not to mention, instantly subscribed. I’ve enjoyed the many trip reports there and so when I was “Googling” about itineraries for our upcoming Kerala trip and found a link to your blog, it definitely brought a smile and a feeling that this is going to be it. And after going through it and seeing the pictures, I’ll say I was not disappointed at all.

Anyway, to the subject. As I mentioned it’s going to be a Family Trip – 6 adults, Two kids (2 yr and 1 yr). The dates – 20th-27th September. Unfortunately, we don’t have many days. So my question is, can your itinerary be modified to 7 days and will the season be good? Also, I checked Myles but they don’t have availability on those days. Any other Car Rental recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks. Anticipating a reply, even though this blog post is quite old now.

Thanks for your message. Yes you can definitely fit this into 7 days – spend 2-3 days in and around Munnar, 2 days in Thekkady, and 2 nights in Coconut Lagoon 🙂

Haven’t really tried any other rental agency – perhaps you could try Zoomcar?

Have a great road trip in Kerala and share photos with us 🙂

Appreciate the response. We ended up going for 8 days and hiring an Innova. We did 2 days in Kovalam, 2 in Varkala, 1 in Alleppey, 2 in Munnar and 1 in Kochi. It was a great trip. I haven’t uploaded any photos because I’m too lazy for that, unlike you guys. Keep up the good work and happy travels! By the way, just saw your Arctic Cruise video…so awesome!

Nice content and pics especially the sceneries that you have captured are awesome.

Thanks Ram!

Your post is completely fantastic, fabulous and inspiring! Lovely one! Awesome captures. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks a ton Sarah – so happy you found our tips for a roadtrip in Kerala helpful 🙂

Hey guys! Loved the article and the pictures <3 I am planning a road trip to Kerala with my parents and I've included almost all the suggestions given in this itinerary. Also, can I get a suggestion on the kind of clothes I should carry for a comfortable trip in Kerala? I would be travelling there in mid-February. Thank you.

Carry breathable cotton fabrics 🙂

You’re welcome Raji. Hope you have a great road trip to Kerala 🙂

It’s a very beautifully weaved post and very informative as well. Love the pictures.

Heyy Savvi and Vid! I have a question: for Houseboats and backwaters, which is a better place to visit : Allepey or Kumarakom?

What a beautiful place to visit! Not going to lie I had to look up the location! I think the waterfalls and especially wildlife safaris is where you’d find me! Love the lush and greenery!

Thank you. Wayanad is not world-famous, so it’s expected that you might not know about it.

I wasn’t familiar with this place, glad you included a map. My husband and I love to hike so I’m intrigued with that. Thanks for opening my eyes to a new place! Saving for future reference.

The tea estates are high on my list and now I need to add spice plantations. The smaller owned plantations would be ideal to see the entire process, without crowds of people. The map really helps demonstrate how far apart everything is.

Thanks Jen. Hope you visit the tea gardens of India soon!

What an incredible itinerary. Amazing how just three short days can give you such a wonderful diverse experience.

Thanks Karen. I read and dream a lot about slow travel but unfortunately most working professionals like us don’t have the luxury of time. These short weekend trips are what keeps our wanderlust spirit alive.

Is coffee and tea from India that different from the once in europe`?

I have to admit, that I have never even heard of this place :O Shame on me, but I give a great thanks for the education 🙂

Thanks Ann. There are many treasures of India that people are unaware of. Nothing to be ashamed of. As far as I know the best quality tea and coffee produced in India are exported to the West because they are way too expensive for Indian markets.

India is really starting to grow on me, I am getting more and more intrigued. And to be honest, if I could afford one more, longer trip in 2020, it would probobly be to India 🙂

This looks like the type of place to slow travel your way through. I like the idea of using homestays to explore this part of the world, but how to you find out where they are. Is there a website that lists them all?

Hi Jay, The homestays for Wayanad can be searched on the Indian hotel booking sites like MakeMyTrip.com or even on HotelsCombined. Makemytrip has separate category for homestays.

Jumping on a bamboo raft to reach Kuruva island looks like an amazing adventure!

Thank you for sharing so much helpful information Sinjana! This looks like a beautiful area. I love the idea of a homestay on a coffee plantation. That would be so interesting to learn and connect with the farmers. The waterfall looks gorgeous. So many things to do in this area. It would be hard to narrow down choices. I can see why you’d want to stay for at least a few days.

Thanks Nancy. This is a beautiful part of India. You must visit if you are travelling to India

India is beautiful and this post gives a comprehensive guide of a place I had never ever thought of travelling to. Thanks for sharing

How did I manage a trip to Kerala but not know about Wayanad? Roaming around lakes, forests and tea plantations sounds heavenly. Would love to stay on a coffee plantation. If you can’t get a proper coffee there, where can you!

This is such a beautiful part of India and I am so glad that things are improving after the horrible floods. It certainly is God’s country with all the culture and hertiage

Wayanad looks beautiful! I hadn’t heard of it before, but now I want to pack my bags! Soochipara Falls would be a must-see for me, but the caves and lookout look stunning too.

Did not know about this place and your highlights have certainly made me think of including it in my itinerary if I should visit this part of the world. Love the lush green and the views.

The waterfall photo is lovely. Wayanad is a beautiful place that I didn’t know anything about. The raft ride looks fun, too!

Wow! Breathtaking area! Just wonderful for a weekend getaway. I love the scenery and your photos are spectacular!

I must confess to having to google Wayanad. It looks like a beautiful place to visit with spectacular scenery. Thank you for telling me about this hidden treasure.

Wow great itinerary! Very well thought out!

Wow, Wayanad sounds like such a fascinating place in India. Before reading your article I had never heard of it and now I want to visit. The caves sound particularly interesting. Thanks for all the great information.

Wayanad is truly fascinating! We visited the place a few years ago and your post evoked the nostalgia about this place. The best time to visit is always the cooler time of the year as Kerala can get quite humid in summer. 🙂

Amazing itinerary!!! It looks like you have covered almost every place. A very detailed, inspiring and informative post, all pictures are extremely beautiful.

nice, India blogs always makes me excited to explore. love from London…

If we wish to do a complete experience of Wayanad and around (don’t minnd more travel too) because we have 8 days, what do you suggest? How many days in Wayanad and how many elsewhere?

Hi Reshal, If you have 8 days you can easily spend 3 full days in Wayanad. After that you drive to Oooty, Coonoor and Kodaikanal if you are into forests and hills. Or you can head south to the beaches. Feel free to reach out to me with more questions.

This looks brilliant! I love the kind of holiday that involves interesting history (Edakkal Caves is fascinating) aaaand so much nature, viewpoints and waterfalls! I can totally see why you loved Wayanad.

Thanks a lot Josy

This is a great itinerary very informative. I hadn’t heard of Wayanad before, but it looks like a great travel destination. I’ll save this post for later when planning a trip there.

Thanks a lot Lenore

Planning a trip to Munnar? Try these scenic routes

 alt=

The alluring hillocks of Munnar paints a perfect portrait of serene nature, often drawing hundreds of visitors to enjoy the misty mornings and lush tea plantations. The two routes to Munnar are particularly praised for its great natural beauty and has amazing sceneries and splendid views in store for the visitors. The Neryamangalam-Munnar route from Ernakulam and the route to Marayur are the best when it comes to incredible nature and fabulous tourist attractions.

Neryamangalam-Munnar route: 59 kilometres

This is one of the most chosen routes that is sure to thrill the travellers. There are plenty of sceneries and naturally beautiful places on both sides of the road until you reach Munnar. You could just stop your vehicle on the wayside and enjoy these views to your heart’s content. However, if you are travelling by bus, make sure to sit on the right side of the bus. The grand panoramic view of the hills and the valley is breath taking.

Sugarcane plantations and sandalwood trees beckon travellers to Marayur

Marayoor near Munnar is more than tea plantations

Marayoor near Munnar is more than tea plantations

Only the Cheeyapara waterfall is on the left side. Meanwhile, the Neryamangalam bridge could be called the entrance or bridge to Munnar. The construction of the bridge began in 1924 during the reign of the regent queen of Travancore Sethulakshmi Bhai. Neryamangalam which receives the highest amount of rainfall in the state is often touted as the ‘Cherrapunji’ of Kerala.

Cheeyapara waterfall

The Cheeyapara waterfall is the first stop in this route. You could park the vehicle and enjoy the picturesque waterfall. Meanwhile, the Valapara waterfall is a few kilometres ahead. Park the vehicle on the left side of the road and walk a few metres to the right to reach the waterfall. Adimali town boasts of some amazing hotels and eateries that serve authentic local food.

wayanad to munnar road trip

Pallivasal and Attukadu waterfall

Pallivasal is a beautiful place to visit before Munnar. It is known for Kerala’s first hydro electric project. You could see the huge penstock pipes here. Turn to a small road in the right from Pallivasal to reach the Attukadu waterfall.

This small pathway through the verdant tea plantations looks straight out of an impressionist painting. There is a quaint tea shop on the side that adds to impeccable charm of the rural setting. If you are interested to enjoy the tea plantation, then you could walk to the waterfall. The waterfall looks fabulous from afar. The Headworks dam is another attraction before you reach Munnar. The water to the Pallivasal hydroelectric project is stored here.

Munnar town

As you enter the Munnar town, a spectacular river on the right side welcomes you. There is a grandis orchard too here. Meanwhile, the KSRTC bus station is just beside this area. Enjoy a stroll through the mesmerizing grandis orchard; however, you should be alert as bug bites could ruin your little trip. Moreover, the authorities warn against taking a swim in the river as it could be precarious .

As the name ‘Munnar’ suggests, it is a place of three lakes. Kanniyar Lake that flows from the Munnar side, Nallathanniyar Lake that joins the Kanniyar Lake and the Kuttiyar Lake that flows from Muttupetti are the three major lakes here. All these lakes would join together and then flow as the mighty Muthirapuzha River. This is the river that you see on the side as soon as you enter the Munnar town.

Eravikulam national park reopens for visitors after lockdown

Munnar-Marayur route

Marayur is an enchanting land where pristine rain forests and exotic sandalwood trees lure you. The road to Marayur runs through the banks of the Kanniyar Lake. The verdant meadows are beautiful, but could be filled with bugs.

Eravikulam National Park

The Eravikulam National Park is one of the major attractions in Munnar. You could purchase the ticket from the entrance and then travel to Rajamala in the bus arranged by the forest department. Rajamala is world famous for the neelakurinji (Strobilanthus kunthiana) seasons that blooms once in twelve years. When it bloomed in 1994, the beautiful hills of Rajamala got covered in a splendid wash of blue colour and the pictures became a sensation. You can spot the Nilgiri tahr that is endemic to the Nilgiri Hills here. This is the perfect place if you wish to get away from the bustle of the city and enjoy some fresh air.

Neelakurinji

Ettam mile is one of the highest places in the Marayur route. This area gets covered in a blanket of mist in the dawn. Meanwhile, the twilights are magical here. You could spot the karinkurangu or the Nilgiri langurs in the nearby woods, if you are lucky. The road that descends from Ettam mile to Marayur is quite narrow and precarious. The Munnar-Marayur route is lined with flowering trees. The Jacaranda trees with its vibrant lilac-coloured flowers is an enchanting sight during the blooming season.

Lakkam waterfall

The Lakkam waterfall is beautiful and safe too. So, you can take a dip in the refreshing waters of the Lakkam waterfall. The forest department has made all the arrangements for the tourists to enjoy the waterfalls safely. Sandalwood forests on both sides of the road exude an exotic fragrance. However, these forests are separated by fences. A drive through this road is definitely a dream journey for any travel enthusiast.

The countryside

A few metres ahead of the Nachivayal forest station is a road that turns to the right. This road through the sandalwood forest leads to the marvellous countryside that is known for its sugarcane farms. You could also see how authentic Marayur jaggery is being made at the countless workshops here. Do not forget to buy the Marayur jaggery and the flavoursome garlic as they are the most iconic items here.

Aanakottapara hills is on the route from Marayur to Kanthalloor. The scene in Kamal Haasan starrer 'Anbe Sivam' where a bus turns over and slides into a gorge was shot here. Muniyara or the dolmens (single-chambered megalithic tomb) is the most amazing highlight of Aanakottapara. Meanwhile, the apple orchards in Kanthalloor are a must visit. Marayur offers you unending scenes and surprises; so, it is better to plan an overnight stay here.

wayanad to munnar road trip

Munnar-Marayaur: 49 kilometres

Finding a place to stay the night won’t be a problem as good accommodation facilities are available in Kanthalloor and Marayur. An early morning drive to the Chinnar tropical forest would be a unique experience. Even though the Chinnar forest is a bit dry, it is still incredibly beautiful. The road runs parallel to the mountain ranges. You could grab a distant view of the Pambar Lake from here.

If you are an history enthusiast, then do not forget to visit the Aalampetty forest. You could enter the forest area after purchasing tickets from the Aalampetty eco development committee office. You can see the rare pictures that were drawn by early humans on the rocks.

The Thoovanam waterfall is known for its mesmerizing beauty. Interestingly, the forest department arranges trekking and accommodation facilities here. You can purchase tickets from Aalampetty and enjoy trekking to the waterfalls with the help of a guide. The Kerala-Tamil Nadu border is a few kilometres from here. The office of the Chinnar wildlife park is close to the border. Purchase tickets and enjoy a stroll through the banks of the Chinnar River. You could even stay in the tree houses in the woods. You could also spot rare faunas like Indian giant squirrels, Hanuman monkeys and Indian star tortoise.

Munnar-Marayur Road

Visitors from the northern part of Kerala can return from Chinnar via Udumalpet without driving back to Munnar. You will reach Coimbatore and then enter Palakkad.

About the Destination:

Munnar is one of the most sought-after hill stations nestled on the Western Ghats. This town located in Kerala’s Idukki district is also called “Southern India’s Kashmir” because the rolling hills adorned with lush vegetation, mesmerizing waterfalls, and tea plantations cast a mystical charm on the visitors. On the other hand, Alleppey, or Alappuzha as it is called, is referred to as the “The Venice of the East”. This city in the Kerala state is a town of lagoons, beaches, backwaters and canals. wayanad to munnar road trip

Taste the Best of Kerala in 3 Days - Munnar & Varkala.

Photo of Hemant Khandagale

Kerala, known as gods own country, best for its hospitality and geography, why won’t anybody want to spend years of their life in this well preserve natural beauty. I explored Kerala in many trips and still couldn’t come to conclusion to create “out of the best” itinerary for my long weekend plan.

During my SWRT (South West Road Trip) I explored mostly all the coastal region of Kerala, the best corner of that trip was Varkala after “Amrita’s smile of Kanyakumari”. I decided I must include it in this plan as well. But I was looking to get bashed by something totally new. With help of Nature Walkers , I could able to explore the belt from Coorg - Idukki - Wayanad to Munnar. But to choose the best for my long weekend, I chose Munnar. Yes, this trip consist of the best parts of Kerala in 3 Days. Dense green carpet of tea gardens and jungles of Munnar & white sand of Varkala and its cliffs beside Arabian Sea is be best summary in words I could describe.

Kolukkumalai Tea Estate

The ridge of this range divide Kerala and Tamil Nadu (cloudy region).

Initially, the plan seemed impossible for following reasons. First I had only 3 Days, Secondly, I will be covering a distance of total 1500 km, via Salem, (not forgetting the 2 state permit taxes I would be paying, if I go on my vehicle) Thirdly, will it be worth traveling so far?, the answer to all the questions are Yes, it will be one of the best holidays you could opt with all checks on budget and time. I prepared an itinerary with both the destinations and presented it to Nature Walkers. With all their cost effective measures we prepared the final cost of the trip including travel, stay, food and all forest permissions & guide within 7500/-.

Meesapulimala

We planned to start our trip on Thursday early evening, boarded the bus with all the other participants and started our journey through the beautiful destinations of Kerala. We reached Munnar in the morning, while waiting for the forest department to open, I was enjoying tracking the sun rays moving like a dragon ball with the morning dew just dropped from the leaf of a tea plant. You could sense the freshness of the morning. I knew the travel time to reach Munnar including dinner time will be close to 12-13 hours. So we planned our start time by about 3.15 pm.

Tea Garden Munnar Kerala

The campsite of Meesapulimala Trek is in the middle of Silent Valley and the road leading to the valley goes through wide spread of beautiful Tata Tea Gardens. The 20 mins ride from Munnar town to the campsite in an open forest jeep was the best way to start my journey in the magical land of uniform dome hills with floating river of clouds and snaky roads. At night the scene looks even more beautiful when vehicle move through the valley in dark, giving you an illusion of 100 fireflies sparkling with all energy, in efforts to amplify the beauty of Munnar.

Meesapulimala is the highest trekking path in Western Ghats, The trek takes you through the Silent Valley to Rhodo Valley to the Meesapulimala Peak.

Rhodovalley

Dense pine-cone forest, green meadow carpet of long grass, bushy tree covered in blood red Rhododendron flowers, fresh water stream at every corner and an amazing view of ocean of clouds from the Meesapulimala Peak is a brief summary of the Trek. Please do check out the complete trek of Meesapulimala Trek & Forest Camping .

The second destination of my travel map is Varkala. Which is close to 250 km south west from Munnar. I knew if we leave early from the Munnar campsite, we can avoid much traffic on road to cover our next 7 hours of journey. We packed our bags after a lovely breakfast and departed with a heavy heart from the campsite. I must say the forest department hospitality could be compared equivalent to a Three Star hotel in Munnar.

We reached Varkala before late-noon, Nature Walkers always use this travel time to bond between the participants. The ice breaking session on road decreases the shyness in discussion and creates an invisible bond between the people. We laughed, danced, played several games and enjoyed this moments which now we cherish with good memories.

Varkala Helipad

The guest house on the cliff of Varkala had an amazing view of the beach. Looking at water waves bouncing people at the shore, we couldn’t hold our enthusiasm and head straight to the beach after our check-in. An ocean dip after a tiring trek of Munnar and travel, dissolved all my body energy and turned me into a crawling Sea-Lion. My head felt light, feet’s turned into flexible ladle and my body felt like a boiled potato, I lay down on the beach with all my stretched corners, waiting for the next wave to push me little more out of water. The mesmerizing sunset of Varkala nailed my bum into the white sand. I felt the time has stopped for minutes. I knew all the efforts I used to reach the Meesapulimala Peak of Munnar has paid off. I was waiting for this heavy ocean wave bash of Varkala after a memorable trek of Meesapulimala. One can only enjoy the shade, if he had been under sun long enough.

You can also enjoy paragliding experience of hovering the place from above with some local vendors. Although it’s seasonal. The best time to experience all the vibes of Varkala is from December to February.

After an evening walk photo-shoot with the team on cliff streets and shops, we selected our restaurant for the night with live music. We all got dressed for Christmas party dinner after a relaxing shower. The interesting thing to note in Varkala streets was the out stall display of fresh catch from the morning. You could point the fish you want to eat and chef will pick it to kitchen for preparing. Fascinating.

We danced, we sang song with the singer on mic and his small band. Other customers from the restaurant also joined us on some of their local and foreign numbers. The food was great, ambience was lovely and travelling companions made this evening into one of the most memorable time of my life. I will always cherish the best moments I created from an itinerary “Taste the best of Kerala in 3 Days”.

Early next morning, I took my cam bag, packed a towel and a biscuit pack and head to the beach for my morning dip. After a rejuvenating warm ocean bath, I just sat there for a while thinking, how wonderful these days been. Places I have seen in the journey, people I met, the food I tasted, the experience was amazing on this trip. Watching a mom and her son making their sand castle on the beach made me realize how peaceful atmosphere this place Varkala offers. I made a promise to the view that I will bring my kid here to make our sand castle. With this thought, I head back to the guesthouse. We all dressed up again in the hunt for a place for our breakfast photo shoot. Believe me, if you are in Varkala, you would want to have your breakfast in a themed restaurant, as ambiance surely add a feel to the beautiful view of the ocean and sometimes it gets difficult to figure out the mood.

When Amrita and I came here for the first time, even we got confused in selecting the ambiance so we planned our course of the meal in the different theme restaurant. Like Appetizer in Kerala style, main course in Chinese, and pan from India. Must try.

The time flies very fast here, so you should always have a checklist of the things you want to do in that day. Paragliding will be a cherry on top for this trip but as the cost was little of my budget, I passed. Thanks to the lovely company of my travellers, I enjoyed every second of my time in Varkala. The idea of creating an itinerary mixing the highest mountain and softest beach of Kerala was fruitful and enjoyable to its every drop.

Some thoughts.

Between Puducherry and Thanjavur visit the mangroves at Pichavaram and overnight in Chidambaram

Make a choice between Munnar and Thekkady so you have more time to explore.

Hello Robin,

Welcome to South India and you are certainly normal :)

Most of the foreigners travel tours for 2 weeks when they plan for a long break in South India. We have had people who have customised tours for 24 to 40 days last year including the destinations you have specified above

You can also cut Chennai on Day 2 and increase 1 more night in Pondicherry as there are enough options to enjoy Pondicherry for 2 days.

Since this is a long trip it is always good to book flight tickets yourself and local tours through a single tour operator based on past experiences posted in this forum like https://www.tripadvisor.in/ShowTopic-g297631-i5501-k12298473-L1500_Savings_on_a_Kerala_Holiday_from_UK-Kerala.html

You should also take a taxi for the entire trip with booking in same or better hotels for a hassle free travel. Here are some reasons

1- Cost of booking resorts(including your choice) + taxi through a tour operator will be cheaper than booking directly. The reason is that customer has to pay a tax of 18% when you book directly while a tour operator will give it to you at lower prices (including taxes which for a tour operator booking is 5%). This difference alone is enough to fund a good sedan car

2- Taxi is always at your disposal 24X7 and that means hassle free travel

3-If you experience any issues,( taxi breakdown, hotel not honouring the booking, tickets to a local attraction?) the local contact will help you to fix this at the earliest unlike an OTA who will put you in endless calls

Just few reasons that may be helpful to take a decision

You can find a list of top rated tour companies on TripAdvisor at https://www.tripadvisor.in/Attractions-g297633-Activities-c42-a_attractionType.SUPPLIERS-Kochi_Cochin_Ernakulam_District_Kerala.html

You can also find the list of approved Travel Companies by Kerala tourism at https://www.keralatourism.org/tour-operators

Hope this helps

Thanks Janvned and Iris holidays,

This change also gives us an extra day so where else should we spend another day?

Iris holidays, we had planned to use a local company to have a driver and book guides. I normally book the hotels, as in the past found it was cheaper but with your comment on tax will see what quotes are,

The church was built by Henry Mansfield knight, a man who served as the manager of the Kannan Devan tea plantation during the British era. The newlywed knight and his wife Eleanor Isabel came to Munnar in the winter of 1894.

Mesmerized by the beauty of Munnar, Isabel requested her husband to bury her remains in Munnar after her death. Isabel fell victim to the cholera outbreak and had a premature death at the age of 24. Thus, with an aching heart, the knight buried his wife’s body on the hilltop to fulfill her wish. The CSI church was originally built by the knight in memory of his wife, in front of a small hill where she was buried. Later a cemetery was constructed in the vicinity, exclusively for British planters.

The Top 10 National Bike Road Trips to Explore

A s an avid biker who lives for the open road, I've had the privilege of traversing some of the most stunning routes across India. And let me tell you - this country has landscapes that will take your breath away! From rugged mountain passes blanketed in snow to sun-kissed coastal drives, India offers a biker's paradise.

Over the years, I've explored famous circuits like -

  • Manali to Leh stretch
  • Chamba to Sach Pass and many more.

I've battled challenging terrain, pitched tents under starry skies, and discovered quaint towns lost in time.

Now, I want to share my top 10 favorite national bike road trips that should be on every rider's bucket list.

These routes promise gorgeous vistas, adrenaline-pumping adventures, interactions with friendly locals, delectable food discoveries, and so much more!

I've covered

  • Best time to visit
  • Road conditions, duration
  • What to see and do on the way

All the insider tips to ensure your ride is smooth, safe and filled with memories for a lifetime.

So, let's start the engines and ride into the heart of incredible India!

1. Manali – Leh – Srinagar Motorcycle Tour

  • Best Touring Season : June to September
  • Estimated Duration: 12-14 Days
  • Route : Manali- Keylong – Sarchu – Leh – Pangong Lake- Nubra valley – Leh – Kargil - Srinagar
  • Scenic Beauty : Navigate Nature's grandeur, featuring towering mountains, serene lakes, and captivating valleys.

I recently embarked on the ultimate adventure - the Manali – Leh – Srinagar Motorcycle Tour. As a long-time motorcycle enthusiast, it was a dream journey for me through the majestic landscapes of Ladakh. Nestled in the Northern part of India, Ladakh is a true haven for bikers, surrounded by awe-inspiring Trans Himalayan mountain ranges.

I prepared myself for an adventure of a lifetime as I navigated through high-altitude mountain passes that took my breath away. I traversed broken bridges that got my adrenaline pumping. And I conquered off-road challenges that tested my grit and determination, but filled me with immense satisfaction.

Roughly 50% of the roads were smooth tarmac, while the rest offered thrilling off-road experiences. This was not just a bike trip for me - it was a test of will and courage amidst Ladakh's unparalleled beauty. The vistas of mountain peaks and valleys are forever etched in my memory.

  • Estimated Duration : 7-10 Days
  • Route : Manali – Kaza – Tabo – Nako – Sangla – Chitkul – Sarahan – Shimla (and optionally, Delhi or Chandigarh)
  • Scenic Beauty : Explore the rugged beauty of Spiti Valley, surrounded by towering mountains, ancient monasteries, and enchanting landscapes.

Riding through Spiti Valley on my motorcycle was an epic adventure I'll never forget. I kicked off my tour from Shimla and rode onto Manali, where the real thrill began. The route takes you through some incredible destinations - remote villages like Kaza and Tabo, the serene Nako lake, trekker havens like Sangla and Chitkul, and the quaint little town of Sarahan.

I'd say about 70% of the route from Manali to Kaza was actually rideable for me. There were definitely some tough stretches too along that picturesque but bone-rattling mountainous terrain.

The whole tour took me around 7 days but I was taking plenty of breaks for the gorgeous views and to meet the friendly locals. An experienced biker could do it in maybe 10 days.

3. Chamba – Sach Pass – Pangi Valley motorcycle tour

  • Estimated Duration : 10-12 Days
  • Route : Dharamshala – Doda – Kishtwar – Killar – Sach Pass – Chamba – Manali (and then optionally to Chandigarh or New Delhi)
  • Scenic Beauty : Experience the rugged beauty of Pangi Valley, encountering the treacherous Sach Pass on the journey from Killar to Chamba.

I'm always up for adventure on my motorcycle and my ride through Chamba, Sach Pass and Pangi Valley was one of my craziest exploits yet! This circuit is no walk in the park - bikers call the rugged Pangi terrain the "mother of all difficult roads".

Parts of it boast the title of being the world's most dangerous road. Suffice to say the Himalayas dished out undoubtedly the toughest challenge for us riders!

The expedition starts from the scenic hill station of Chamba, leading me through exotic spots like Dharamshala, Kishtwar, quaint little Killar village and finally the breathtaking Sach Pass. The highlight was undoubtedly conquering Sach Pass - at 4400+ meters, crossing this high mountain pass tested every bit of my riding skill and determination!

From there I rode downhill to the Parvati Valley and concluded my tour in the adventure biker haven, Manali. You can opt to end your tour at Chandigarh or Delhi too via different routes.

  • Best Touring Season : November to February
  • Estimated Duration: 7-10 Days
  • Route : Jaipur – Udaipur – Jaisalmer – Pushkar – Jodhpur – Ajmer
  • Scenic Beauty : Immerse yourself in the rich cultural tapestry, vibrant festivals, royal charm, and heritage richness of Rajasthan.

Rajasthan has been high up on my wishlist as a motorcycling destination. On my bike, I got the chance to dive deep into the best of Rajasthan's rich cultural experiences across regal cities like Jaipur, Udaipur, Jodhpur and beyond.

Cruising through Jaipur was a riot of colors - the vibrant markets with their glittering trinkets and fabrics were reminiscent of the grandeur of Rajasthan's royalty. In Udaipur, I lost myself witnessing gorgeous sunsets against the backdrop of the Pichola Lake.

Jaisalmer truly overwhelmed me with its golden desert landscape and intricately carved havelis. I found solace among the spiritual vibes in Pushkar and liberation watching the sunset from the Savitri temple.

The regal architecture in Jodhpur took me back to the era of mighty Rajput warriors. And finally, paying respects at the Ajmer Sharif Dargah was a sublime experience.

Rajasthan unfolded itself as a rich sensory experience blending heritage with scenic vistas. Being on my motorcycle, steered gently along twisting roads surrounded by Aravallis on one side and golden sand dunes on the other, felt nothing short of liberating.

Around each corner was a new visual delicacy - from bustling local bazaars to quaint hamlets to ornate palaces.

  • Best Touring Season : Throughout the year
  • Estimated Duration : Short-duration ride
  • Route : Mumbai – Coastal Highway – Alibaug – Murud – Dapoli – Anjarle – Guhagar – Ganpatipule – Tarkarli – Goa
  • Scenic Beauty : Experience the raw beauty of the Konkan Coast, with its small fishing villages, narrow roads, authentic cuisine, and pristine beaches.

You know which bike ride has stuck with me as one of my all-time favourites in India? Riding the Konkan coastal route from Mumbai down to Goa. Now I've done a fair bit of touring across India, but that stretch along the Arabian sea was just something else!

Instead of taking one of the main highways, I decided to take the scenic coastal road. And I'll tell you, that was one of the best decisions on two wheels! I simply took my time meandering through twisty palm-fringed roads overlooking endless white sand beaches on one side and the bluest sea on the other.

It was such a rejuvenating experience, just riding breezily from one fishing village to the next - exploring little seaside temples, grabbing freshly caught fish at local markets, stopping for cutting chai with villagers under shady trees. No busy tourist crowds anywhere, can you imagine! Each place more picture-perfect than the next, makes you feel like you're starring in a dang music video or something.

And with the forests, beaches, seafood, the Konkan has got its own special coastal culture. The locals dishes out such warm hospitality too. The 10 days I spent riding through rural coastal Maharashtra and northern Goa gave me memories and stories that'll last a lifetime!

  • Estimated Duration : 14 Days
  • Route : Chennai – Mahabalipuram – Pondicherry – Kolli Hills – Ooty – Madhumalai & Bandipur Tiger Reserves – Coorg – Chikkamagalur – Hampi – Goa
  • Scenic Beauty : Explore diverse landscapes, including ancient temples, tea gardens, wildlife reserves, coffee plantations, and enchanting beaches.

Riding through South India has been a dream trip on my motorcycle bucket list for as long as I can remember. The chance of experiencing the region's diversity - from ancient history to beaches, lush jungles, hill station vistas and more - makes this an epic cross-country adventure ride in my books.

And when I finally got to go from Chennai down to Goa, it did not disappoint! Whether I was negotiating the 70 breathtaking hairpin bends up Kolli Hills or stopping for coffee at a plantation in Coorg - the route was chock full of magic around every corner.

Temple hopping through magnificent Hampi ruins, crossing the Western Ghats multiple times and even hoping to glimpse tigers in Bandipur - talk about non-stop highlights!

Now I'll admit the two week journey wasn't all smooth sailing in terms of roads or terrain. But a bit of adventure is part of the package deal when exploring areas off the beaten tourist track! For every bumpy patch, I was rewarded with stunning scenery and warm local hospitality.

When it comes to epic motorcycle touring, the one ride that never lets me down is my trusted Bajaj Dominar 400. I've taken my hardy Dominar on countless expeditions - from the serene beaches of the Konkan coast to the towering mountains of Ladakh and many routes in between.

While planning these trips across various terrains, I consciously chose the Dominar 400 for its perfect blend of features suited to long distance touring. Its powerful 373cc engine makes light work of even steep uphill climbs to places like the Kolli Hills while maintaining stability on hairpin bends or broken village trails.

The comfortable upright riding position and reasonable weight makes many hours in the saddle effortless, without compromising maneuverability or balance. Even with pillion riders and luggage loaded up for weeks on the road, my Dominar 400 takes on any challenge the road throws our way.

Add the Dominar's respectable fuel efficiency figures while even having a top speed of up to 155 kmph where permissible. For me, it really is the ideal motorcycle for exploring the diverse landscapes India has to offer - dependable, practical and pumped up for adventure!

Test ride one on your next touring holiday and I assure you, the Dominar 400 won't disappoint.

To wind up, the open road beckons with its promises of adventure, discovery, and the thrill of exploration.
