Frequently Asked Questions

Like The Wizard of Oz, Wicked is the definition of family-friendly. But like the classic 1939 movie, younger children may find it too long or be frightened by the show's flying monkeys, allusions to offstage violence and death of a character. Most children over eight, however, will be delighted by the world of Wicked .

There is no specific dress code at the theatre. For all performances, attire should be comfortable and appropriate for the occasion. Please remember the theatre is air conditioned during the summer months; sweaters are recommended.

The Gershwin Theatre offers soft drinks, water, cocktails and candy 45 minutes before the show and during intermission. Bars are located on the front orchestra and mezzanine levels. Visit the bar before the show to pre-order your intermission drinks! Please note that no food or drinks are allowed into the theater and must be consumed in the lobbies.

Devices are available free-of-charge on the second level of the Gershwin theater, as well as hand-held captioning devices for the deaf and audio descriptions devices for the blind.

Audien™ Translation System devices are available for $10 on the second level of the theatre – currently offered in Japanese, German, Portuguese, Spanish, French, Mandarin and Korean. You can rent a headset and get a running synopsis of the show in any of these seven languages.

The seating procedure for latecomers varies by seat section. Generally speaking, late patrons who are seated in the orchestra may be held in the lobby until approximately twenty minutes after the performance begins. They are then escorted directly to their seats by an usher.

No. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande will star as Elphaba and Glinda in the film adaptation of Wicked , but they do not appear in the Broadway production.

MK is honored to be the 25 th  woman to play Elphaba full time on Broadway. MK spent a decade touring through 92 cities with  Wicked  (Elphaba),  Mean Girls  (Janis), and  Hair  (Sheila), before making her Broadway debut last year as the Elphaba Standby. She is a graduate of Syracuse University.

Broadway credits include Head Over Heels, Brighton Beach Memoirs , and Spring Awakening . Encores!: Mabel in Mack & Mabel, Paint Your Wagon . Off-Broadway credits include Actually (MTC), Fun Home (The Public, Lortel nomination), Death Takes a Holiday and Dream of the Burning Boy (Roundabout, Drama League nomination). Regional: Papermill Playhouse, Williamstown, Yale Repertory. Television: Skye on Amazon’s Red Oaks, Mrs. Maisel, Evil, The Big C , and many more.

Broadway debut! Jordan comes directly from the national tour after playing the Winkie Prince for over a year and a half. Credits:  Radio City Christmas Spectacular ,  Legally Blonde,  numerous productions with   Walt Disney World .  Jordan   hails from California where he was a competitive swimmer, winning collegiate national championships and competing in the 2012 US Olympic Trials. Forever thankful for his family, Josh and darling wife, Julie.

Jake Pedersen is made his Broadway debut in Parade . National tours:  Wicked  (Boq),  Escape to Margaritaville  (Ensemble). Regional:  Writing Kevin Taylor  (Meadow Brook Theatre),  Newsies  (Crutchie, NLBP). New works:  The Last Day  (Sarah Schlesinger/Mike Reid),  The Lucky Boy  (Kristen Childs). BFA in Musical Theatre from Penn State.

Donna McKechnie received a Best Actress Tony Award for her performance in A Chorus Line . Other Broadway shows include How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying ; The Education of Hyman Kaplan ; Sondheim – A Musical Tribute (which she also choreographed); Promises, Promises; Company ; On The Town; State Fair (Fred Astaire Award); and The Visit . She has starred in and choreographed numerous productions regionally as well as productions in London's West End, Paris, and Tokyo. Her TV credits include Hullaballoo, Fame, Cheers, Dark Shadows , and HBO Specials. Films include The Little Prince and Every Little Step. Donna's memoir, Time Steps, was published by Simon and Schuster. In 2021, Ms. McKechnie was inducted into the American Theatre Hall of Fame.

William Youmans is thrilled to return to Wicked . He originated the role of Dr. Dillamond on Broadway. ‘Wicked’ Movies: Trailer, Behind-the-Scenes Facts, Release Dates & Everything Else We Know

‘wicked: part one’ is one of the most highly-anticipated movies of 2024, and a new trailer has been unveiled learn more about the upcoming movies..

S omething wicked this way comes. Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo are taking on the iconic roles of Glinda and Elphaba in the upcoming movies. The first trailer was released on February 11 during the Super Bowl, and a second one was unveiled on May 15. The footage gave a first glimpse of Cynthia’s incredible transformation into Elphaba, as well as the the gorgeous sets and costumes. The final moments of the trailer give a snippet of Cynthia singing “Defying Gravity.”

Director Jon M. Chu shared photos from the Wicked set on his Instagram page in April 2023. The two photos include Cynthia feeling green in her Elphaba look, while Ariana’s Glinda is seen running up the stairs in a pink ball gown. “Green & Pink. It always starts with green and pink. #WickedMovie coming to you in 2024,” he captioned the photos.

Universal Studios has assembled an incredible director and all-star cast to lead the upcoming two-part film adaptations. The movies are based on the Tony Award-winning Broadway show, which is a prequel to The Wizard of Oz . A  Wicked  movie was announced way back in 2016, but it took until 2021 for the process to really get going. Fans are so excited to see the story of  Wicked  come to life on the big screen this time. From the talented cast to the release dates, the expectations are very  high for these two films. Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming  Wicked  movies.

‘Wicked’ Movies Release Dates

The first  Wicked  movie, titled  Wicked: Part One , will be released on November 27, 2024. The sequel, titled Wicked: Part Two , comes out exactly one year later on November 26, 2025.

Jon explained why the project is being split into two movies back in April 2022. “As we prepared this production over the last year, it became increasingly clear that it would be impossible to wrestle the story of WICKED into a single film without doing some real damage to it,” Jon wrote on Twitter. “We decided to give ourselves a bigger canvas and make not just one WICKED movie but TWO!! With more space, we can tell the story of WICKED as it was meant to be told while bringing even more depth and surprise to the journeys of these beloved characters.”

‘Wicked’ Movies Cast & Crew

Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo were cast as Glinda and Elphaba, respectively, on November 4, 2021. Both actresses shared the news of their casting on Instagram. Ariana shared a photo of her hands over her face as she sat in front of an Apple MacBook after learning the news. The pop star also shared screenshots of a three-way call between herself, Cynthia, and Jon, followed by just a call between the ladies.

In Cynthia’s post, the British actress held her hands over her mouth and was in tears as she found out she got the role. Ariana and Cynthia also sent each other flowers with heartfelt notes where they congratulated each other on the new job.

Ariana is taking over the role of Glinda the Good Witch, which was originated by Kristen Chenoweth  in the Broadway show. Cynthia is playing Elphaba, who was originally portrayed by Idina Menzel on Broadway. Both Kristen and Idina congratulated Ariana and Cynthia on snagging the iconic roles.

The rest of the cast for the  Wicked  movies is pretty epic.  Bridgerton  star  Jonathan Bailey is playing Fiyero, Elphaba’s love interest. Jon Chu confirmed Jonathan’s casting in September 2022. “He’s perfect, they’re perfect. They’d be perfect together. Born to be forever….. I am too excited to pretend this hasn’t been happening. We have a Fiyero!!!! #JonathanBailey #Wicked,” he wrote on Twitter. 

The role of Fiyero in the Wicked movies was a top role for musical actors. Nick Jonas confirmed in June 2023 that he did audition for the role of Fiyero. “Yes, it’s true. Joe and I both went out, and we didn’t get it. But that’s the life of an actor,” Nick told Variety .

He added, “I think it went really well. I was very happy coming out of the room. I’m a huge fan of the show, and that’s a role I always thought it would be fun to play. But I think Jonathan [Bailey] is going to do a great job, and I’m sure the movie is going to be great.”

Michelle Yeoh  is playing Madame Morrible, the headmistress of Crage Hall at Shiz University. Jeff Goldblum  is confirmed to be playing The Wizard. Saturday Night Live  star Bowen Yang  is playing Pfannee, Elphaba and Glinda’s classmate at Shiz University. The Greatest Showman  star Kaela Settle  is playing Miss Coddle. The cast also consists of Ethan Slater as Boq, Marissa Bode as Nessarose (Elphaba’s sister), Bronwyn James as ShenShen, Aaron Teoh as Avaric, and Colin Michael Carmichael as Professor Nikdik.

Jon M. Chu is directing the  Wicked  movies from a screenplay written by Winnie Holzman and Stephen Schwartz . Stephen is also doing the music, which is set to include some of the musical’s most classic songs such as “Defying Gravity” and “Popular.”  Marc Platt , who is Ben Platt ‘s father, and David Stone are producing the films.  Alice Brooks  is the cinematographer, Nathan Crowley is the production designer, and Paul Tazewell is the costume designer.

Production Trivia

Rehearsals for  Wicked: Part One  began in August 2022. Both Ariana and Cynthia gave fans some behind-the-scenes glimpses into their rehearsals in October 2022. The duo posed for a cute mirror selfie during a break in the rehearsal studio. Ariana underwent a blonde hair makeover that month to play Glinda. Jon Chu confirmed on December 9 that filming had begun three days earlier, in London.

The cast and crew were supposed to shoot Wicked: Part One  and  Wicked: Part Two  back to back. However, the SAG-AFTRA strike put production on hold in July 2023 when the cast and crew just had a few days left of filming. Once the strike was over, filming resumed and wrapped up in January 2024.

In March 2024, director Jon M. Chu revealed to Vanity Fair that Cynthia and Ariana insisted on singing live while filming. “When we were shooting it, those girls were like ‘F**k the pre-records. We’re going live,'” he said.

What We Know About the Plot Of the ‘Wicked’ Movies

The  Wicked  films are expected to closely follow the plot of the Broadway show, which is actually based on Gregory Maguire ‘s 1995 novel. The story takes place before and after Dorothy Gale arrives in Oz from Kansas and explores the relationship between Elphaba and Glinda. The pair start off as unlikely friends but eventually, they become adversaries after The Wizard casts a spell on Elphaba which turns her into the Wicked Witch.

Cynthia previously teased how the films are going to be even better than the musical. “I think it’s going to be unlike anything you’ve ever seen before,” Cynthia told Entertainment Tonight  at the 2022 SAG Awards. “I think we’re going to enjoy the magic of it. We’re going to try and put our own spin on what we know already and show you a story about two women [who] are sisters,” she added.

Stephen Schwartz confirmed in a June 2022 newsletter that there will be new songs in the films. “There are two new songs in the second movie that are complete songs in themselves, and then there are new sections in some of the existing songs in both movies. All the new material, of course, is to meet the demands of the storytelling,” he said.

Broadway blockbuster 'Wicked' has landed in OKC, here's what to know before you go

It doesn't take a magic spell to figure out what makes the musical "Wicked" so perennially popular.

Before the show even starts, the three-time Tony Award-winning smash provides a practically peerless musical theater spectacle, from the giant glittering map of Oz that serves as the curtain to the massive mechanical Time Dragon Clock looming above the stage.

From Glinda's ( Celia Hottenstein ) iconic entrance in a big bubble to Elphaba's ( Olivia Valli ) famously verdigris visage, the national touring production of "Wicked" didn't let down the Oklahoma City audience at its Feb. 22 performance at Civic Center Music Hall. With lavish costumes, dazzling special effects and a captivating cast, the show effectively transported the crowd to the enchanted land of Oz.

For the first time in a decade, "Wicked," is making its long-awaited return to Oklahoma City for a three-week run through March 10 as part of OKC Broadway's 2023-2024 season .

Here's what you need to know about "Wicked" in OKC:

What is 'Wicked' about?

Set before and during the events of "The Wizard of Oz," "Wicked" helped launch Broken Arrow native Kristin Chenoweth and "Frozen" actor Idina Menzel to stardom when it bowed on Broadway in 2003. The show last followed the Yellow Brick Road to OKC in fall 2013 , which means local fans have been waiting more than 10 years for another chance to see the song-and-dance extravaganza.

Based on Gregory Maguire's novel "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West," the show boasts music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Winnie Holzman.

An alternate telling of the iconic 1939 film "The Wizard of Oz" and L. Frank Baum's classic 1900 book "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz," "Wicked" chronicles the unlikely friendship between Elphaba, a smart and talented yet hot-tempered and misunderstood witch who was born with green skin and eventually gets labeled the Wicked Witch of the West, and Galinda, a spoiled and bubbly blonde who is particularly popular and eventually becomes known as Glinda the Good.

The Broadway blockbuster drops the audience into the Land of Oz as the people are raucously celebrating the death of the Wicked Witch of the West. Glinda confirms that the Time Dragon Clock has recorded that the Wicked Witch was melted at the 13th hour by a bucket of water thrown by a female child.

Setting off the flashbacks that constitute much of the musical, Glinda tells of her unlikely friendship with Elphaba, which started when they were roommates at Shiz University and endured despite the two witches having divergent outlooks on life, falling in love with the same roguish prince, Fiyero (James D. Gish), and reacting differently to uncovering corruption in the Ozian government run by the so-called Wonderful Wizard of Oz (Tom McGowan, also a busy movie and television character actor ).

How does the current national touring production of 'Wicked' measure up?

In many ways, "Wicked" is the ultimate musical theater spectacle. Directed by Tony winner Joe Mantello with musical staging by Tony victor Wayne Cilento , the current national tour delivers on eye-popping stage magic.

The show casts a strong spell with Euegene Lee's Tony-winning steampunk-inspired settings, Kenneth Posner's often emerald-tinged lighting, Elaine J. McCarthy's otherworldly projections, whimsical wigs and hair by Tom Watson and sensational special effects by Chic Silber. Susan Hilferty deserves special praise for the stunning Tony-winning costumes.

Holzman's book sometimes struggles to keep all the threads of the complex story untangled, and if, like my daughters, you haven't seen "The Wizard of Oz," the show's narrative can be a bit mystifying. It's fun to learn the origins of cinematic icons like the witches, flying monkeys, Tin Man, Scarecrow and Cowardly Lion — Dorothy literally stays in the shadows — even if the timeline between the movie and musical gets a little muddled.

But there's nothing confusing about why Schwartz's "Wicked" score has become so beloved: His potent songwriting bewitches the audience, especially as delivered by the excellent ensemble. Kathy Fitzgerald is perfectly loathsome as the Machiavellian headmistress Madame Morrible, Gish continually brings new depths to the princely character who isn't as shallow as he first appears, and McGowan impresses as the insidious Wizard, particularly on his "Wonderful" number.

After charming as the lead in the national tour of "Pretty Woman: The Musical," which played OKC in 2022, Valli again proves a towering talent as Elphaba, from emotional ballads like "The Wizard and I" and "I'm Not That Girl" to the bombastic anthem "No Good Deed."

Hottenstein nimbly plays up the comedic side of Glinda while showing off her ceiling-scraping vocal capabilities on "No One Mourns the Wicked," her version of "I'm Not That Girl" and on the ever-entertaining "Popular." She and Valli conjure up excellent chemistry, and they are dynamic duet partners on the uproarious "What Is This Feeling?" and the moving farewell "For Good."

"Defying Gravity," the show's signature Act 1 closer, never fails to delight audiences, and if it doesn't soar quite as high as the first time you see it live, it's still a thrill to be swept away by it.

How do the themes of 'Wicked' continue to resonate?

Over the past two decades, "Wicked" has been performed in more than 100 cities in 16 countries around the world, been translated into six languages and been seen by in excess of 60 million people worldwide.

Last year, the show's 20th anniversary on Broadway was cause for multiple Technicolor celebrations, and the anticipated two-part cinematic adaptation of "Wicked," starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, recently premiered during the Super Bowl. "Part One" of the movie version is flying into theaters Nov. 27, while "Part Two" is slated for a 2025 debut.

The show's explorations of the nature of good and evil are part of its timeless appeal, and it still remains the rare Broadway hit with two women as the main characters and a focus on the power of female friendships.

But many of "Wicked's" themes resonate even more strongly and uncomfortably than ever in these contentious times, including storylines about censoring marginalized communities, bullying and scapegoating outsiders and strategically spreading misinformation.

Entries for each performance will be open starting at 10 a.m. four days prior to each performance at lottery.broadwaydirect.com . Entries will be accepted through 6 p.m. three days prior to each show, at which time winners will be contacted by email.

Those selected as winners have 60 minutes to purchase up to two tickets. Seats are assigned at the discretion of the ticket office and cannot be transferred to other people or performances. Ellen DeGeneres Announces Dates for Her 'Final' Stand-Up Tour Across North America

Tickets for the 27-show farewell tour will be available May 30 for an artist presale and May 31 in a general onsale

Ellen DeGeneres is embarking on one last hurrah in her stand-up career.

This summer, the 66-year-old comedian will take a lap around North America on a 27-show tour, titled Ellen’s Last Stand… Up . Per a release shared with PEOPLE, the dates will be the “last opportunity” to witness DeGeneres in her “final curtain call.”

Produced by Live Nation, Ellen’s Last Stand… Up will be DeGeneres’ final comeback to comedy. The tour will see the former talk show host “reintroduce her trademark wit and laughter-inducing anecdotes” to a live crowd.

"Here it is! These are the cities and dates for my final stand-up tour," DeGeneres wrote on Insatgram . "Pre-sale starts tomorrow May 30th at 10am local time with code CHICKEN. Get your tickets at ellenshop.com/tour."

Tickets will also be available to the general public on Friday, May 31, at 10 a.m. local time.

Earlier this May, PEOPLE announced that DeGeneres' upcoming Netflix special — set to be taped Aug. 16 and 17 in Minneapolis — will be her “last.”

“To answer the questions everyone is asking me — Yes, I’m going to talk about it,” DeGeneres said in a statement. “Yes, Portia [de Rossi] really is that pretty in real life."

DeGeneres implies that the stand-up set will broach even the most controversial topics, like the controversy surrounding The Ellen DeGeneres Show 's alleged toxic workplace environment. The claims, which first emerged in a BuzzFeed News report , included being penalized for taking medical leave, instances of racial microaggressions and fear of punishment for raising complaints.

DeGeneres long-running series concluded in 2022 after 19 seasons. Before that, she confirmed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that the toxic workplace controversy was not a factor in her decision to conclude the series. 

In her latest routine, which she performed at the Largo in Los Angeles on April 24 , DeGeneres joked about being “kicked out of show business” for being “mean.” She also admitted that although she “hated the way the show ended,” she was happy to be back onstage with her marriage to de Rossi, 51, stronger than ever.

“I think we need more laughter and less drama,” the Emmy winner added.

Wicked Movie Musical Defies Gravity With First "Popular," High-Flying Trailer (WATCH)

Watch Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande as Elphaba and Glinda in the trailer for the highly anticipated movie adaptation of the hit play. 

The trailer for what’s sure to be one of the most "Popular" movies of the year is here. On Wednesday, Universal released the official trailer for Wicked , the highly anticipated film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical.

The trailer, which at nearly three and a half minutes is a lengthy one, introduces viewers to the Land of Oz before Dorothy and her little dog Toto ever showed up. Cynthia Erivo plays Elphaba, a young woman with green skin who will become the infamous Wicked Witch of the West… but maybe there’s more to her story than it would seem. Opposite her is Ariana Grande as Glinda, a pink-clad, popular girl who rooms with Elphaba at Shiz University where they’re both studying magic under the headmistress Madame Morrible (Michelle Yeoh).

As the trailer reveals, the pair don’t initially get along, but Glinda begins to form a friendship with Elphaba despite her initial prejudice, eventually accompanying her to the Emerald City to meet the Wizard of Oz (Jeff Goldblum).

Peter Dinklage , Bowen Yang, Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Bronwyn James, and Keala Settle also star.  

The trailer features hints of a couple of songs from the musical, including the most well-known of the bunch, “Popular” and “Defying Gravity.”

If you haven’t seen the Tony-winning play the movie is based on, you should know that the trailer covers a lot of plot. However, that’s perhaps OK because the film, which is helmed by Crazy Rich Asians director John M. Chu, only covers the first act of the play. A second film, due in theaters a year after this one, will conclude the story. 

Wicked , which was originally based on a 1995 novel by Gregory Maguire titled Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West , was adapted into a Broadway musical that opened in 2003. Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth originated the roles of Elphaba and Glinda, respectively. The play won three Tony Awards and is the fourth-longest-running show on Broadway as well as the second-highest-grossing show. To say that the film adaptation is anticipated is an understatement.
