Wilderness Tours

Wilderness Tours is Canada’s largest whitewater rafting and adventure resort company as well as the Ottawa River’s oldest and first rafting company.  This 240+ hectare adventure playground is located on the shores of the Ottawa River, about an hour’s drive west of Ottawa or 4.5 hours from downtown Toronto.

The facility is strategically positioned to take full advantage of the whitewater action on the nearby stretches of the river. The mighty Ottawa River is known as one of the world’s best waterways for whitewater adventure. Gentle currents quickly escalate into adrenaline-pumping class III and IV swells and rapids, including the steep, 5 metre waterfall in the Middle Channel.

The Main Channel has rapids called the Butcher’s Knife, the Bus Eater, Hell’s Half Mile and the White Faced Monster, you know you’re in for a wild ride.  The Middle Channel’s rapids are perfect for gentle family rafting trips for both adults and children as young as 5 years old.

A variety of fully outfitted water based adventures are offered, including canoe trips, stand up paddle boarding, sea kayaking as well as tubing.

A range of accommodations are available to suit every group and budget. In between rafting on the river, hit the trails on a mountain bike or work up a sweat on the sports courts. If relaxing is more your speed, chill on the sandy beach, soak in one of the hot tubs or lounge in the new timber sauna, repurposed from a 150-year-old timber cabin.

More about Wilderness Tours

Customize your ideal adrenaline-fueled getaway at Canada’s premier adventure destination. Choose from different types of accommodation, including camping, RV and trailer sites, as well as basic and deluxe cabins and luxury cottages. Sizes and amenities of the cabins and cottages vary, and some feature ensuite washrooms while others have shared bathrooms. Families or groups of friends may prefer multi-bedroom cottages with full kitchens and docks. The park village features designated family and adult zones.

Though wild river rafting and kayaking on the Ottawa River is the main attraction at Wilderness Tours, there are loads of other adventures and activities to keep everyone engaged and entertained.

Explore the local trails of the National Whitewater Park by mountain bike or on a hike. Splash in the outdoor pool, test your balance on a stand-up paddle board or spend an afternoon fishing. Play basketball or volleyball on the sports courts which are open and lit in the evenings.

On site, a fully licensed bar and casual restaurant regularly features live music, DJs and entertainment.

For us quality of experience is only second to safety.

We are committed to providing world-class trekking experiences for our guests that go way above and beyond the mass-produced tours so common today.

The Mt. Rainier Inn trip with Wildland was perfect. The Inn was comfortable; the guide was an expert in his field; the pacing was just right to accommodate all those on the trip; the scenery was ideal. If you can go please do.

Why Join a Guided Hiking or backpacking Tour?

10,000+ people join our guided hiking tours and backpacking trips annually, and there are many reasons so many people make this choice.

Reserve A Trip

Trained Guides

Hiking with an experienced, trained guide helps to maximize the safety and enjoyment of your trekking adventure. This is especially true if your trip is in an unfamiliar area, which guided trips often are.

Everything Included

A specific hiking or backpacking trip may be on your "life list" and you don't want to purchase all the gear and equipment to do a single trip. In this situation going with a guide service where everything is included provides a tremendous benefit.

Knowledge & Learning

Some guests are most interested in learning as much as they can about the area(s) they're hiking through. Guides can bring places to life by sharing stories, knowledge, observations, context and personal passion.

Convenience

We handle all the trip planning and on-the-ground logistics. This service takes the burden of planning almost entirely off your plate. Additionally you can travel light and have everything waiting for you.

Learn from Experts

Some guests are new to the outdoors, backpacking, hiking, and/or camping and prefer to go with experts to learn best practices from professionals. Guided trips are an excellent way to get started.

A Perfect Combination

For most guests it's a combination of some or all of these reasons that they join guided hiking tours and backpacking trips. Whatever your reason is, we're ready to help you create the experience of a lifetime.

Choosing the Right Hiking Trip

Choosing the right trip is a key ingredient for enjoying your hiking vacation. We offer backpacking trips, horse/llama/porter supported hikes, inn-based hiking tours, basecamp hiking tours and day hike tours. For guests looking to challenge themselves and travel deep into the backcountry, a backpacking trip is the best choice. Some people want to explore the backcountry but without heavy backpacks, and for those folks we recommend horse/llama/porter supported trips. Inn-based and basecamp tours are multi-day hiking vacations that showcase the best hikes and highlights of an area and are either inn-based or camping-based, and are great for families, couples, and solo travelers. And, finally, day hikes with an award winning hiking tour company like Wildland are an exceptional way to maximize a short amount of time at one of America’s amazing national parks.

wilderness tours login

When and Where to Hike

For desert hiking destinations like Joshua Tree and Death Valley, the best seasons are spring, fall and winter. In mountain destinations like Yellowstone, Iceland, the Pacific Northwest, the Alps and others, the best seasons to hike are late spring, summer and early fall. Some destinations are great year round, regardless of whether they are in the desert or mountains; examples are Grand Canyon, Sedona, the Smoky Mountains, Yosemite, Yellowstone (ski and snowshoe tours), Peru, and Ecuador. Winter is, generally, the most underrated season for hiking and backpacking tours in many areas, as it’s a spectacular time of year to hike but largely skipped over by many people.

When choosing your next destination, it’s important to consider more than just the time of year. You can call us 7 days a week at 800-715-HIKE (4453) to speak with our Adventure Consultant Team.

REVIEWS FROM OUR CLIENTS

This is the only way to really experience Alaska and meet its people. The food was incredible, the boat a classic, and our naturalist was wonderfully knowledgeable, whether we were kayaking, hiking, or whale watching! It was a magical and soulful way to see the Inside Passage just as John Muir saw it.
The inclusion of the Blackfoot Powwow, the museum visit, the rodeo, and the Blackfoot ranger program presentation made this so much more than a hiking trip!
This trip was everything and more that what we were looking for. My dreams of seeing wolves in the wild came true two days in row and the trip was perfectly planned and timed.
From the first interaction with the WT office to the last interaction with Paul on the trip, our expectations described by Wilderness Travel were fulfilled and in most cases exceeded. Kudos to all.
This was the best trip ever. Hiking, kayaking, glaciers, bears, whales, sea lions—magical! This happily did not resemble a cruise ship and we loved the adventure!
All-in-all, the trip was amazing—the trip of a lifetime. The crew did a wonderful job and the kayaking and hiking was great (although I could have done more, but do realize that sometimes the boat just has to travel!). And we were really fortunate to have a great group of guests that all got along.
The trip was wonderful and something we won’t soon forget. I would highly recommend it to anyone who loves nature, who is willing to get up early and spend your days taking in the sights.
The food was absolutely outstanding—it was like dining every day in a three star restaurant. Captain Bill is an wonderful guy with great stories. He was able to navigate the many icebergs and got our small vessel right to the head of the Dawson Glacier!
An amazing trip. We seemed to have Alaska’s Inland Passage all to ourselves, sharing it only with an array of whales and mountain goats plus bears and sea lions. The scenery was gorgeous; the crew knowledgeable and enthusiastic. We enjoyed gourmet cuisine at every meal. This is absolutely, positively the ideal way to travel!
We enjoyed this trip very much. Its intimacy with the landscape and wildlife was everything I had hoped for and more. The crew was incredibly personable and knowledgeable.
