FLINDERS RANGES

Arrive in Adelaide Airport where you meet your Ross tour leader. Our destination this afternoon is the picturesque Clare Valley. Here, a patchwork of farmland seamlessly blends, rows of vines, elegant eucalypts and natural bushland. Check into your hotel, Clare Country Club for the next two nights and soak in the bucolic rural setting. Welcome dinner together tonight.

Clare Country Club , Clare

Step back in time at Bungaree Station Established by George Hawker and his brothers in 1841, Bungaree became the headquarters of an extensive sheep station with 100 thousand merino sheep by the 1880s. It resembled a small village, with its own Church, Station Store, Blacksmith Shop and even the District Council Chambers , as well as its beautiful sandstone Homestead, Woolshed, Shearers Quarters, Stableyard, Managers House and other staff cottages. Now, 178 years later, it is an efficient mixed farm run by the descendants of the original founder, G.C. Hawker. Consequently Bungaree Station is not a museum, but rather a living record of rural Australia since 1841. Enjoy lunch here and soak up life on this fascinating property. Afternoon wine tasting at Seven Hill Winery. The first winery ever built in the Clare Valley and one of the oldest in Australia.

Travel north through the beautifully sparse landscapes to the desert oasis of Parachilna. First licensed in 1876, the award-winning Prairie Hotel is today one of Australia’s most iconic outback destinations and renowned for its innovative menu. As today’s lunch spot, it’s the perfect spot to soak up this extraordinary landscape and meet some locals. At the historic railway town of Lyndhurst are the remarkable Ochre Cliffs. An important site for local Adnyamathanha people and protected under the Aboriginal Heritage Act 1988, the Ochre Cliffs are a quarry where, for thousands of years, local people quarried ochre then trading it as far north as the Northern Territory and Queensland, and south to the coast. The cliffs are a visual feast of red, yellow, white and brown. Continue your desert journey to Marree your home in the outback for the next two nights. Dinner included tonight.

The Marree Hotel , Marree.

Maree is at the junction of the Birdsville and Oodnadatta Tracks and surrounded by vast deserts. Nearby is Kati Thanda–Lake Eyre. At 144 kilometres long and 77 kilometres wide, it is Australia’s largest salt lake, an important indigeneous cultural site and a natural wonder. The best way to appreciate Kati Thanda–Lake Eyre’s incredible colours and patterns is from the air. For a truly unforgettable experience, there’s the option this morning to take a scenic flight – at own expense – over the lake. You’ll also see the Dingo Fence and mysterious Marree Man, the world’s largest work of art. Maree is a fascinating town to explore, full of local history including the small reconstruction of a mosque to commemorate the first mosque in Australia, built in 1861 by Afghan camel drivers. Weather permitting, we’ll drive a little of the famous Birdsville track. Dinner included tonight.

We are travelling into the ancient gorge country of the Flinders Ranges-Ikara National Park. In rugged Parachilna Gorge, giant river red gums line the creek bed, offering a shady spot for morning tea. Lunch stop in the historic copper mining town of Blinman before we head into Wilpena Pound. It’s a dramatic landscape as the road winds up out of the gorge. A photo stop to see the rocky ridge line known as the Great Wall, an astonishing geological feature. Experience a sense of place and space that is unique to the semi-arid zone. As the suns sets this place is teeming with kangaroos and emus. Keep watch for the elusive Yellow Footed Wallaby. We are heading to Wilpena Pound Resort, in the heart of Flinders Ranges on Adnyamathanha Country. Dinner is included tonight.

Wilpena Pound Resort , Flinders Ranges

Cradled by ancient mountain ranges on the edge of the desert, Wilpena Pound is the crowning jewel of the Flinders Ranges. Also known by its Adnyamathanha name of Ikara, meaning meeting place. A local guide from the historic Willow Springs Station joins us today, this vast and ancient landscape with its iconic landforms, unique geology and wildflowers; a landscape that inspired artists including Sir Hans Heysen. Wilpena Pound is a natural amphitheatre. Native white cypress, mallees and wildflowers dominate the rugged scenery in Bunyeroo Valley and Brachina Gorge. This pass was used by bullock teams pulling their loads as they traversed the ranges. Today it’s a refuge for the elusive Yellow-footed Rock-wallaby. Birdlife is rich and varied. Picnic lunch is included today. Stop to photograph the famous Cazneaux Tree, a solitary river red gum made famous by Australian photographer Harold Cazneaux who captured it’s image in 1937. We should see Australia’s National Floral Emblem, the Golden Wattle, Acacia pycnantha, in full bloom. It’s a full day of saturated geology, flora and fauna in this “cradle of life”. Dinner is included tonight at the resort.

A scenic flight (own expense) is the ultimate way to experience Wilpena Pound and the Ikara-Flinders Ranges. This optional morning flight takes you over the Wilpena Pound, the ranges and gorges that make up this spectacular national park. From the air, you’ll get a bird’s eye view and see how the two Ranges form a backbone on the landscape below. It’s a truly unmissable experience. On the ground, there’s much to see today at Old Wilpena Station one of South Australia’s oldest and best-preserved pastoral settlements. Stroll under magnificent river red gums with stunning views of Wilpena Pound. And finally a ‘Sunset Tour’ to watch changing colours of this vast ancient landscape of Wilpena and the Flinders Ranges from a panoramic viewing platform with drinks and canapes. Our local guide will relate traditional stories of the formation of the Flinders Ranges and the two serpents that joined to form Ikara (Wilpena Pound). Dinner is included this evening in your hotel.

We are leaving the desert and traveling into Port Augusta to visit Australia’s arid heart at the Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden. It’s a garden of plants from Australia’s low rainfall regions, that is also home to more than 150 bird species. Next the charming historic town of Quorn. Once an important town at the junction of the Sydney-Perth and Adelaide-Darwin railway systems, Quorn is now a popular film set/location. Beautiful heritage-listed sites and dramatic landscape have seen the making of productions as diverse as Wolf Creek, Gallipoli, The Shiralee, The Sundowners, The Lighthorsemen, Sunday Too Far Away, The Last Ride and Robbery Under Arms. Stay overnight in Quorn to see the Silo light show.

Great Northern Lodge , Quorn

On our way back to Adelaide we stop in Snowton, on the South Australian Silo Art Trail. The Silo Art Movement is more than a visual spectacle; it is a dynamic force of transformation and rejuvenation. In its majestic strokes and grandeur lie the seeds of renewal for many towns and communities that once teetered on the brink of obscurity. Arrive in Adelaide, check into your deluxe hotel in the centre of the city. Farewell dinner tonight at the hotel.

We take the unsealed Parachilna Gorge Road to Blinman, a scenic drive and landscape which has been the backdrop for famous movies, such as Gallipoli, Robbery Under Arms and Rabbit-Proof Fence. Blinman is the highest town in South Australia sitting at 614m above sea level and the town is home to an old Copper Mine. I have travelled with this company FIVE times , and each trip has been a fabulous experience. Mostly I travelled with my sister, once with my daughter and once with a young friend. Each time my companions also greatly enjoyed the trips and thanked me for their great holiday. Who would travel 5x, if they did not have a wonderful time and delicious fresh food ? and very good value for their money ? Ursula

A tour that provides the best of the Flinders Ranges, Arkaroola, Wilpena Pound, Peterborough, Clare Valley. Food and accommodation superb, knowledge of the area and it’s history are provided by an organised and personable tour guide who looks after her passengers thoughtfully. A tour not to be missed by those who love the wilderness of our ancient land.

Itinerary & Accommodation Snapshot

Please check your required arrival time with the office before booking your flights.

Today you will be greeted by our friendly and professional Tour Directors.

After landing at Adelaide Airport please collect your baggage and make your way to the café located at the bottom of the escalator in the baggage hall where one of your Tour Directors will meet you.

We then depart Adelaide and travel north along the Princes Highway, making our way to Port Augusta. We spend the night at the Standpipe Golf Motor Inn. (L,D)

This morning we enjoy a visit to the Australian Arid Lands Botanic Gardens. Established in 1993 to research, conserve and promote the wider appreciation of Australia’s arid zone flora, the centre is home to thousands of highly evolved plant communities that are specially adapted to thrive in an environment where temperatures are extreme, and drought can last for decades. The garden showcases a diverse collection of arid zone habitats in a picturesque setting of more than 250 hectares.

Later this morning we continue our journey north to Parachilna. Enjoy a gourmet lunch under the verandah of the Prairie Hotel before heading on through Lyndhurst and Leigh Creek, arriving in Marree late afternoon. This historic little settlement lies at the junction of the Birdsville and Oodnadatta Tracks, and was once one of the busiest towns in Outback Australia! Tonight, we stay at the Marree Hotel. (B, L, D)

Please Note: Today your tour will split into 2 groups. Group 1 will take the scenic flights/tour as per the itinerary below, while Group 2 travels up to William Creek by road following the Old Ghan rail line. On Day 4, Group 2 enjoys the scenic flight and tour, while Group 1 travels back down to Marree by road.

This morning we head to the Marree Aerodrome to prepare for our scenic flights. Meet your experienced pilot and board our Cessna Grand Caravan (subject to availability) . Once airborne, our morning flight will take us over Lake Eyre South before crossing over to Lake Eyre North, the larger of the two lakes.

We continue north over Clifton Hills Station and Goyder Lagoon on the Diamantina River floodplains. Located at the junction of the Diamantina River and Eyre Creek, this large ephemeral swamp consists mainly of shallow braided micro-channels which look stunning from the air. From Goyder Lagoon we fly further north to Birdsville where we land and enjoy a leisurely lunch at the iconic Birdsville Hotel. This is followed by an informative town tour taken by a local guide to close points of interest and the Waddi Waddi trees.

This afternoon we take to the skies for our second flight for the day, this time heading southwest over the mighty Simpson Desert. Admire the endless red sand dunes that stretch to the horizon, before once again flying over Lake Eyre North. After another close inspection of this breathtaking natural spectacle we’ll fly over Belt Bay, the lowest point on the Australia continent at 15 metres below sea level, and head for William Creek, where we rendezvous with the rest of the tour group. We spend the night here in modern ensuite accommodation and enjoy dinner in one of the most atmospheric outback pubs in Australia - the William Creek Hotel. (B, L, D)

Today Group 2 enjoys the scenic flights to Birdsville and Lake Eyre, while Group 1 travels down the Oodnadatta Track to Marree.

Later this morning we continue south along the Oodnadatta Track, following the Old Ghan line - one of the great historic railway lines in the world. Construction began in 1878 and it eventually reached Oodnadatta in 1891. The line only reached Alice Springs in 1929, so the journey from Oodnadatta at this time was still made by camel. The old line was eventually closed in 1980, and the new line takes a different route to Alice Springs. Some of the old sidings that refilled the steam engines with water, such as Coward Springs, are incredibly interesting and well preserved. Today we’ll visit a few of them on our way down to Marree. Upon our arrival we’ll rendezvous with Group 2 and check-in to the Marree Hotel for our overnight stay. (B, L, D)

After breakfast we farewell Marree and begin our trek south to the Flinders Ranges and Wilpena Pound. Enjoy the scenic drive through Bunyeroo and Brachina Gorges, stopping at several vantage points along the way to admire the views of the Flinders Ranges. Enjoy a picnic lunch along the way before arriving at Wilpena Pound Resort early in the afternoon.

Wilpena Pound sits in the southern region of the Flinders Ranges National Park. It is characterised by spectacular scenery and is home to nearly half of South Australia’s species of plants. After checking in to your deluxe resort room, we’ll set off on a guided walk through the tranquil Pound Gap into Wilpena Pound (easy grade, 2-3 hrs return). Follow Wilpena Creek past ancient River Red Gums and pines to arrive at the historic Hills Homestead. For the more energetic, there is an optional extension to the walk that leads to Wangarra Hill lookout, which offers panoramic views of Wilpena Pound (good level of fitness and mobility required).

This afternoon we return to the resort. Take some time to freshen up before dinner in the restaurant. (B, L, D)

This morning we enjoy a visit to the Old Wilpena Station precinct, one of South Australia’s oldest and best-preserved pastoral settlements.  There’s also an opportunity to take a 20-minute scenic flight over Wilpena Pound (at your own expense).

Later this morning we begin our trek south back to Adelaide. Travel to Hawker before taking the R.M Williams Way down through Carrieton, Orroroo and Burra. Enjoy a quick look around this interesting little village before heading on to Adelaide, arriving late afternoon. We then check-in to the Stamford Grand Hotel in Glenelg for our final evening together.

Tonight, enjoy a farewell dinner in the hotel restaurant and reflect upon your adventure into the heart of outback Australia.  (B, L, D)

Today your adventure concludes. After breakfast you’ll be transferred to the airport for your return flights home. (B)

  • X9904TFannies 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Highlight of the trip! This tour was the highlight of my Australia travels and the perfect way to end my trip! We got to see all the key sites that I wanted to see, my favourite places being Coober Pedy and Uluru/Kata Tjuṯa, and learn about the places whilst placing a key importance on being respectful to the Aboriginal cultures. The majority of the group were also solo travellers which was really nice. Everyone made an effort from the beginning to be friendly, and it was a great group to be able to share these once-in-a-lifetime memories with. Our tour guides Gary and Iluka were fab and made sure we felt very looked after, but also got involved and added to the fun of the group. I highly recommend this tour to anyone who wants to explore this part of Australia :) Read more Written 16 May 2024

Damo, our tour leader, was outstanding and was always busy to ensure the group could enjoy the tour to the max, the group was amazing and of course the adventure really was exciting. Every day was busy and enjoyable and I believe the value of the tour is unbeatable. Read more Written 31 March 2024
  • 373murrayd 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Fantastic introduction to Kangaroo Island My friend and I had a fantastic time on this three day tour! We saw wild kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, sea lions, and geckos - and we were lucky enough to see an echidna, too. The stops were all enjoyable and there was a pleasant amount of walking involved. Our guide, Gianna, was as personable as she was professional and catered expertly to every tourgoer's needs. Recommended, especially for those who have never been to Kangaroo Island before! • nadinesO5828KR 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Nature, wildlife pure! Highly recommended Can highly recommend. Was nervous about the swags, but perfectly fine and safe on an private camp site. Our guide Gianna did an amazing job. Safe driving, watching out for us to drink enough and not forget sunscreen. It was a fun group. We saw lots of wildlife which I loved, as I was hoping for that. Took nice beach swims as well. And even a flat tire Gianna handled so well, I was impressed. Read more Written 17 March 2024
  • jerot373 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Not much of an Adventure tour It was ok, Tour says adventure tour however there wasn’t much adventure, mainly visited gift shops which was pretty boring specially for people who is traveling last thing we want is buy extra stuff and smell candles, only one that should be kept on the tour is the winery, the seals and remarkable rocks definitely a highlight, but that’s it, remove all the gift shops from the tour and include more wildlife and actual adventures like hikes, felt like we were just driving for ages to go from shop to shop, which is pretty tiring, couldn’t do the volunteering so should have a back up plan for it too, food was good, just the house toilet has a really bad smell so that should be sort out too. • mgatien 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles This is the real australia! A totally unforgettable and awesome experience! From beginning to end, it was a delight to engage with this company - they made me feel like a valued person during the booking process. This trip literally was an epic journey across the land, but an emotional journey as well, being able to see parts of Australia that are unique in their own right. Brendan and Emily were outstanding guides throughout: funny, knowledgeable, engaging, easy-going yet at the same time well-organized. Participating in setting up camp, loading and unloading the bus and in meal prep made it seem like we were one big family. And of course, the destinations themselves were amazing - King's Canyon, Kata Tjuta and Uluru - with plenty of other interesting things to see along the way. One piece of advice ... for those who find the heat, sun, or flies especially difficult to tolerate, try timing your trip to minimize those aspects. Otherwise, I can only highly recommend this tour ... it's the best one I have done! Read more Written 14 March 2024
