Freeride World Tour acquired by FIS; (Photo/FIS)

The International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) acquired the Freeride World Tour this month. And the future of freeride skiing and snowboarding is looking bigger and brighter than ever.

The FIS is the largest winter international federation in the world and is recognized by the International Olympic Committee. The Freeride World Tour is a worldwide circuit of freeride ski and snowboard competitions. It’s where skiers and riders face off on some of the gnarliest alpine terrain that ski resorts have to offer.

Now, the two organizations are joining forces. They’re merging to bring some of the most exciting snowsports in the world onto a much larger stage.

Freeride World Tour and FIS: Aligning Snowsport Disciplines

Jeremy Bernard Photography junior Freeride world tour

FIS’ acquisition of the Freeride World Tour is big news that has a lot of people feeling very hopeful about the future of freeride skiing and snowboarding.

Because FIS is a sports federation with a global pool of resources, it has a lot to bring to the Freeride World Tour’s table. It’s aiming to align snowsport disciplines under a single governing body. And it wants to offer these sports more power to develop on the global stage.

“Integrating FWT will see FIS add one of the most exciting, dynamic winter sports competition formats to its portfolio,” said Johan Eliasch in a press release announcing the acquisition. “FWT brings a highly professional tour that offers breathtaking action and an entirely new element of skiing and snowboarding to FIS.”

The Freeride World Tour is a big deal in the world of professional ski and ride competitions. There are (on average) five top-level events that take place throughout the ski season and over 200 “development events.”

The Tour currently includes over 6,000 licensed athletes that compete in three different tiers: Challenger, Qualifier, and Junior. Athletes can work their way up to the top level. Currently, over 1 million viewers tune in to watch Freeride World Tour events every year.

Freeride Skiing and Riding: Olympic Games-Bound?

Female skiers on podium at Freeride World Tour

FIS’ acquisition will provide the Freeride World Tour with more resources and a bigger stage. But it could also eventually mean that freeride skiing and snowboarding finally become Olympic Games.

The FIS structure follows guidelines recognized in Olympic sports, so this might open the Winter Olympics’ door for freeride skiing and boarding. Understandably, this prospect has the FWT excited.

“We are thrilled to be joining forces with FIS,” said Nicolas Hale-Woods, Freeride World Tour founder. “For our freeride athletes and event organizers, being under [FIS] will give them more access to support, increased visibility, and additional resources. That will ultimately allow the FWT and all of its stakeholders to grow.”

So get ready for big things to come. The first Freeride World Tour competitions for 2023 are already slated and coming up fast .

The competition events are scheduled for Saturday 3 August 2024

Hotham, Australia’s premier powder capital, is set to make history as the first Australian ski resort to host Freeride World Tour events, featuring both Qualifier and Junior competitions for ski and snowboard. Freeride History

What is freeriding?

What? You haven’t heard about it? It’s called freeride and it’s arguably the most exciting snowsport competition of the 21st century.

world tour ski freeride

FREERIDING IS A philosophy.

world tour ski freeride

It’s a vertical free-verse poem on the mountain. It’s the ultimate expression of all that is fun and liberating about sliding on snow in wintertime.

the freeride philosophy

Forget placing slalom poles down the mountain. Forget building artificial jumps and hips and halfpipes and tabletops. Forget grooming the slopes even. Freeride contests are  100% natural, 100% clean . Indeed, the event is all about celebrating the god-given terrain features found on any mountainside in the most exciting and elemental format possible.  There‘s a start gate at the summit and a finish gate at the bottom. That’s it. Best run down wins .

It truly is that simple. Think  skiers and snowboarders choosing impossible-looking lines through cornices and cliff-faces and nasty couloirs . Think progressive: big jumps, mach-speed turns and full-on attack. Think entertaining.

world tour ski freeride

a competition like no other

world tour ski freeride

Launched in the winter of 1996, the Verbier Extreme was originally strictly a snowboard contest. But all that changed in 2004...

what THE history books say

The concept of freeride informs the very soul of the snowsport experience. The notion of freeriding was born the moment folks figured out how to secure their feet onto long planks of wood in order to move easier over the winter landscape – and discovered that they could suddenly shuck the bonds of gravity and fly. They were free. They could ride down the hill at will. They never looked back…

  • 1930's - 1940's

As far back as the 1930’s and ‘40’s, legendary ski champion  Emile Allais  and his merry band of mountain adventurers were already assaulting the couloirs and gullies that dropped from the heady summits around Mt Blanc and Chamonix. Some of their early descents beggar the imagination – especially considering the rudimentary nature of the gear they were using back then.

  • 1950's - 1960's

But it took until the late 1960’s and ‘70’s – when Ski Extreme was first coined by the French and the gear had improved substantially – for freeriding to really attract global attention. Much of it was due to the hard-charging styles of its main proponents – visionary mountain men like  Sylvain Saudan, Patrick Vallencant, Bruno Gouvy  and  Jean Marc Boivin  – who were stretching the limits of downhill riding in a way that had never been seen before. In these years, freeride was truly extreme. If you fell, you died…

  • 1960's - 1980's

But the Americans weren’t far behind. Led by pioneers like Montana’s  Bill Briggs  and California’s  Steve McKinney , a whole new generation of young riders begin testing themselves in the steep slopes of the Rockies, the Wasatch and the Sierra Nevada. More ‘Hollywood’ than their French counterparts, and far more into the entertainment aspects than the Europeans, icons like  Glen Plake  and  Scot Schmidt  brought a whole new aesthetic to the American ski experience in the 1980’s. It was their offbeat, out-there style, showcased by filmmaker  Greg Stump  in such seminal films at Blizzard of Aaaah’s that really set the stage for the launch of the first ever freeride contests.

  • 1990's - Today

And what a launch that was! The near-mythical World Extreme Ski Championships (WESC), contested on the hoary slopes of Alaska’s Wasatch Mountains, was the coming out party for a whole new gang of big-mountain freeriders. In fact, the start list for the inaugural 1991 contest reads like a Who’s Who of modern freeriding:  Doug Coombs  won the inaugural men’s title while  Kim Reichhelm  was tops in the women.

Meanwhile the Europeans – primarily the French and the Swedes – were honing their big-mountain techniques on the often-nasty inclines around Mont Blanc and the Savoie Region. But the moment they discovered there were contests happening in America, the while game changed. When a French teenager by the name of  Guerlain Chicherit  unleashed a corker of a run in flat-light and ugly Alaskan conditions to capture his first WESC title back in 1999 (and beat out his mentor,  Seb Michaud ), few people realized the enormous impact his Valdez victory would have on the freeriding movement. For the new World Champion wasn’t alone. Back home in France were dozens of young chargers just like him. Fast, smooth – and incredibly efficient on skis. Bold beyond belief. Yet completely sure of their stuff – even in big exposure.

This, many ski historian believe, was the true beginning of the freeride revolution…

But what about the snowboarders?

From the very inception of the sport in the early 1980’s, it was clear that the one-plank concept was ideal for attacking gnarly terrain and steep drops. More stable and easier to manage in difficult – or changing – conditions, the snowboard became the new tool of choice for many big mountain adventures. In fact, for many early freeride practitioners, it was a snowboard that got them into the backcountry in the first place!

Like the skiers, the snowboarders of the early 1990’s had their very own Alaska event in which to shine. Launched as the World Extreme Snowboarding Championships in 1992, the event soon morphed into the hugely popular King Of the Hill under visionary  Nick Peralta ’s guidance. Here too, the start list for these event events reads like a list of snowboarding royalty:  Matt Goodwill, Shaun Palmer, Steve Klassen, Julie Zell, Tina Basich, Anthonin Lieutaghi  and  Axel Pauporté .

It was just a matter of time before the two disciplines would join forces…

But it took a Swiss-Brit entrepreneur by the name of  Nicolas Hale-Woods  to make it happen. Launched in the winter of 1996, the Verbier Extreme was originally strictly a snowboard contest. But all that changed in 2004 when ten of the world’s top two-planked freeriders were invited to participate. The event was never the same again.

Today, FWT Management SA, a company based in Lutry/Switzerland oversees an annual world ski and snowboard circuit – the Freeride World Tour – that travels from Japan to Canada, the Pyrenees and the Alps with the final event in Verbier. The very cream of the proverbial riders crop – skiers and snowboarders, men and women – all vie for participation in this prestigious event. "The development since 1996 has gone beyond our expectations,” says Hale-Woods. “It’s a great event. But more importantly, the success of the FWT Junior and FWT Qualifier series, with over 130 events and 4,000 licenced riders wordwide is what gives a true dimension to the sport”.

What is Freeride?

Freeride skiing and snowboarding is all about celebrating the natural terrain features in the most exhilarating and epic way possible. Each rider picks their own line, no set course or trails, just un-groomed terrain and the endless possibility of epic lines and jumps. Technically speaking, the very first skiers and boarders were freeriders. It was however in the late 60’s that the French coined the term Ski Extreme and freeride started to gain worldwide traction.

What is Competitive Freeride?

The Freeride World Tour and qualifying rounds all have the same simple rules, no matter where you are in the world. Competitive freeride skiers and snowboarders don’t have a practice run, meaning they’ll rely purely on visual inspection of the face to select a creative line and send it based on five elements of subjective judging criteria: 1. Line 2. Fluidity 3. Control 4. Air & Style 5. Technique

Shadow Basin

The Shadow Basin chairlift is basically a trip to freeride heaven! A 10-minute walk up on your right will bring you to a lookout, where you can take in an aerial view of Queenstown before going downhill. This area is called the Highway and has many different routes for you to explore. Don’t feel like going for a walk? Leave the upper part for another day and just go down the lower routes. An uphill hike to your left will take you to the famous Alta Chutes, named after the stunning accompanying lake. The Elevator and Escalator in that section are great for steep and exposed skiing and lead you to another epic freeride zone, called East Knoll. This area includes Boulder Basin, East Face, The Nose and Front Face.

Curvey Basin

Get stoked to discover the freeride near Curvey Basin, because there’s some good fun to be had. Straight above the lift is a freeride area that our lifties call Centurion/Ambush. Don’t let that stray your attention from the area on the left side of the lift though, which we call Curvey Headwall. The possibilities there are endless. Straight through the Curvey Headwall runs a manmade crossing that takes you to the Gallipoli Chutes, no hiking or climbing necessary.

Sugar Basin

Sugar Basin has some great freeride terrain off Emerald Buttress which is to the Skiers Right of the Gallipoli Chutes for some double black diamond action. Take the Water Race from the top of Sugar past Swan Lake and work your way up Terrain Access Track 1. Want to develop your skills a little bit before you conquer these advanced freeride terrains? The concept park Burton Stash is a natural course constructed from organic elements, making it perfect for practising your techniques beforehand!

Anticipation is high for another winter season, including all the fun events that come with it. The Freeride World Tour , a multi-stage event that focuses on the highest level of freeride skiing and snowboarding, is back for FWT20, and is set to return to the same venues of 2019. Complete with rookies, wild cards, and a returning champ, the coming season is poised to be one of the best ever.

2020 Freeride World Tour Official Teaser

The Athletes of FWT20

None

Reigning world champion Markus Eder, of Italy, has decided to retire from competitive skiing , meaning the overall world title is up for grabs on the men’s side. The favorite is certainly Kristofer Turdell, of Sweden, who was the overall world champion in 2018 and finished the FWT19 season behind Eder in second place overall.

The Swede won’t have a clear path to the championship, however, as former World Champions and freeride skiing veterans Leo Slemett (FRA, FWT17 Champion), Reine Barkered (SWE, FWT12 Champion) and Drew Tabke (USA, FWT13 Champion) are also set to return to the Freeride World Tour for 2020.

Other threats for the top spot include rookies Carl Renvall (SUI), Blake Marshall (NZL), Tao Kreibich (AUT), Jack and Kevin Nichols (USA), and Isaac Freeland (USA). The dark horse is certainly Craig Murray (NZL) who won  Kicking Horse last season before a crash in Fieberbrunn took him out of the rest of FWT19. And when Tanner Hall (USA) is in the lineup, anything can happen.

Watch more: Best of the FWT19

The Wild Cards for the men’s ski side are also worthy of attention, both for viewers and the other competitors. Yu Sasaki (JPN) will return for FWT20, as well as Sam Lee, of New Zealand, who is one of the most capable freeride skiers on the planet. Ivan Malakhov (RUS), Yann Rausis (SUI), Konstantin Ottner (GER), and Hank Bilous (NZL) round out the other injury wild cards on the men’s side for FWT20.

Women’s Ski

Italian Arianna Tricomi is back for FWT20 and gunning for the three-peat. Her stylish 360s and confident, consistent cliff drops certainly make her the favorite, and the fact that she has already earned the title of overall world champion in 2018 and 2019 means she’s definitely the girl to beat this season.

None

The biggest threats for the two-time Italian champ are Norwegian Hedvig Wessel and American Jacqueline Pollard. Wessel proved last season she has a number of tricks up her sleeve, including massive backflips. Pollard demonstrated strong, confident freeskiing throughout the season, which judges loved. Both are coming off rookie seasons and, with the knowledge that comes from experience, are solid bets for storming to the top in 2020.

Other ladies out for Tricomi’s title include Jessica Hotter (NZL) and Emma Patterson (USA), who qualified after strong FWQ seasons in 2019. Wildcards Juliette Willman (FRA) and Evelina Nilsson (SWE) are also ready to challenge Tricomi.  Injury Wild Cards include Maude Besse (SUI) and Rachel Croft (USA), who both showed promise last season before getting injured.

The Freeride World Tour 2020 Schedule

None

The FWT20 Schedule looks a lot like last season’s, with every comp taking place just a little later compared to last season. The Andorra and Austria stops have also been swapped in order compared to FWT19. Last year, the Andorra stop was delayed slightly due to spring conditions, so hopefully moving it to earlier in the year will help it go off with a bang.

If there are two stops you don’t want to miss, it’s Kicking Horse and Verbier. The snow and venue at Kicking Horse, B.C. are as good as it gets, and last year the skiers put on a high-flying show. The infamous Bec des Rosses face in Verbier is the final stop for a reason: Nothing compares in the sport of freeride skiing. Wadek Gorak took it to a new level last season with his gigantic backflip , and we’re excited to see what goes down on that face in 2020.
