I called worldwide travel agency , a very rude women answered the phone Arlene Kurr I told her I need her expert opinion on planning a trip she asked me what was my budget , I really didn't have a budget because I don't know what it costs to travel on a tour , so I asked her what she thinks for a 10 to 7 day trip just a ball park , still very rude said I can't help you if you don't know what you want to spend or where you want to go . I thought that's what a travel agency does , she told me to look on line for Information about where I what to go or I can come in and get a brochure! then another phone was ringing ,she said she will keep in touch and she had to get the other call . I called her back to ask if she was going to help me find anything, she said I don't think were a good fit and call another agency !! Ive never been treated so rude from someone who just talked to me on the phone and is supposed to be in the hospitality business .I will by pass travel agency's and go direct from now on !!

World Wide Travel Agency About

Forty-two years ago, Harvey Kurr was startled to learn that only 25 percent of Americans had ever traveled on an airplane. With increased union enrollment and more businesses offering paid vacation time, Kurr decided to get into the travel business and started World Wide Travel Agency in Quincy. For the past 20 years, he has operated in downtown Hingham and now offers customers packages for travel around the world. He says the most popular destination, by far, is the Caribbean, whether by cruise or hotel. World Wide is endorsed by the International Airlines Travel Agent Network and Kurr says his experience is what draws customers to his agency.

World wide travel: 40 years of travel planning and still going strong, each week hingham patch speaks with a small business owner..

Joseph Markman's profile picture

Joseph Markman , Patch Staff

worldwide travel hingham ma

More than four decades ago, Harvey Kurr was an accountant reading Time Magazine when he came across a potentially lucrative fact: only 20 percent of Americans had used airline travel. Moreover, unions were pushing for vacation time, and that meant millions of people were making more travel plans than ever before. World Wide Travel was born.  Now, all these years later, Kurr's company has undergone some changes – including the addition of his wife Arlene – but Kurr, now in his 70s, says he has not had a down year since opening, despite a myriad of economic and industry changes. Hingham Patch sat down with the Kurrs recently to talk about their travel agency as part of a weekly business conversation series. Come back every Monday for more interviews. What did you do before? Harvey, a Coast Guard veteran from Winthrop, was an accountant for Star Market, which opened several other companies, such as Brigham's. Arlene, originally from Brookline was a stay-at-home mother, raising their two children. The couple met when their sisters roomed together at Northeastern University. When did you open? World Wide Travel originally opened more than 40 years ago at the corner of Hancock and Beach streets in Quincy. The Kurrs opened the Hingham location, at 52 South St., 23 years ago. What challenges did you face opening the locations? Back when the Quincy location opened, it was among 10 travel companies in Quincy, Harvey said. That meant a lot of competition, and Harvey had to start from scratch networking since he was not from the area. When Arlene opened the downtown Hingham location, there were five travel agencies in town. Now World Wide Travel is the only one.  Why did you pick Hingham? The Kurrs have lived in Hingham for 41 years. They found a prime location downtown, moving into a new building after the original building on their block burned down.  Arlene and Harvey also live just five minutes from their storefront. How many employees do you have? Today it is just Arlene and Harvey and one other full-time agent. When the Quincy location was still open, they had about half a dozen people working there, mainly to hand-write airline tickets. The Quincy location closed several years ago, prompted by a change in airline policy. That location focused primarily on commercial business, booking airfares for companies. But the airlines stopped providing commission on those sales.  How have you adapted to industry changes? World Wide Travel, and especially the Hingham location, has been focused on crafting vacations for people, so the change in commissions did not hurt the Kurrs as much as those with other agencies. Computers and the Internet have not overly affected World Wide Travel. Because their agency focuses on customer services that often cannot be found using online booking tools, they have many repeat customers and referrals. They also have 40 years of travel experience, both working as agents and traveling themselves.  "We are well traveled," Arlene said. "It we haven't been there we have a resource." World Wide Travel offers group bookings, cruises and domestic and international travel packages. What are the most popular destinations? Today people often use the Internet for domestic trips to visit relatives, and instead turn to agencies like World Wide Travel for international or exotic travel, Arlene said.  Arlene's favorite destination, and a favorite among customers, is Italy. Religious groups will often book trips to Rome or Israel, Harvey said. Also popular are Hawaii, Asia, Alaska and South America. Where do your customers come from? They are primarily from the South Shore, and many Quincy customers have transitioned to the Hingham location. What's your favorite part of the job? "I like working with people," Arlene said. "I get excited when they are planning a trip." Harvey added that 99 percent of people come into World Wide Travel with a smile on their face, happy to be going on vacation, and that is infectious. If there was one thing you could change in town to help small businesses, what would it be? The Kurrs said they cannot think of any complaints during their years in business in Hingham when it comes to rules and regulations. In fact, the town and the civic organizations have been very helpful. They like their area, with its varied, locally-owned shops and restaurants. "It has a uniqueness," Arlene said. 15 Best Things to Do in Hingham (MA)

A well-heeled seaside town on the South Shore, Hingham is near the southeastern cusp of Boston Harbor and has volumes of colonial history going back to 1635.

This heritage shines through in downtown Hingham, where the sights include the oldest church in continuous use in the United States, and the birthplace of General Benjamin Lincoln (1733-1810), a key figure in the American Revolutionary War.

Hingham has an amazing abundance of public open space, by the water, at the extraordinary World’s End, Bathing Beach and Bare Cove Park.

This also applies to Hingham’s interior, where Wompatuck State Park and adjoining reservations create 5,000 acres of woods, wetlands, ponds, meadows and pasture.

1. World’s End

World’s End, Hingham

A place of immense natural beauty, World’s End is a craggy peninsula on a chain of glacial drumlins between the Weir River and Hingham Harbor.

One person drawn to this majestic location was the merchant John Brewer (1818-1893) who built his summer home here in the mid-19th century and then bought up surrounding land, becoming the largest real estate owner in Hingham by the time of his death.

In 1890 he hired world-famous landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted to design a subdivision for 163 homes here. Although the carriage paths were cut, and survive today, the development never went ahead.

Later, in 1945, World’s End was mooted as a location for the United Nations Headquarters. The 251-acre reservation is nothing short of magnificent, with clear views of the Boston skyline, Hingham Harbor, and the Weir River.

2. Downtown Hingham

Downtown Hingham

Encompassing the earliest streets laid out in the town and reaching down to the harbor, Hingham’s upmarket center reaches back almost 400 years.

This is the kind of downtown area that lends itself to a walking tour, and there are a lot of intriguing stops.

One is the Old Ship Church, which we’ll cover in more detail below, while the General Benjamin Lincoln House (1715), is the birthplace and home of the major general who formally accepted the British surrender at Yorktown in 1781.

For a handy guide to all the important sights, the Hingham Historical Society has published a custom google map, with overlays for a range of topics, from 17th-century history to local industry.

Amid this heritage, downtown Hingham is a modern center, brimming with boutiques, galleries, international dining, arts, culture and exciting events.

On the Third Thursday Stroll, numerous participating stores stay open late, and the Hingham Historical Society gives free guided walking tours during this event.

3. Bathing Beach

Bathing Beach Aerial View

Lining the west side of Hingham Harbor is a scenic public park, composed of a beach, a large grassy space, a bandstand and seasonal amenities like concessions and restrooms.

In summer, if you can time your visit to the window either side of high tide this is a fine place to enjoy the sand between your toes.

At any time of year the views of the harbor and World’s End are a delight, and you can get a history lesson on the Harbor Boardwalk, which has interpretive signs detailing Hingham’s old mackerel industry.

Bathing Beach is also the venue for the third-oldest farmers’ market in Massachusetts, meeting on Saturday mornings, May through mid-November at 96 Otis Street.

4. Loring Hall

Loring Hall

In 1936, a Greek Revival meeting hall on Main Street in Hingham’s historic center was converted into a single-screen movie house, and has remained one to this day.

Loring Hall dates back to 1852 and was built by the town as a place for social meetings, lectures and other functions, but had outlived its purpose by the 20th century.

Even some 90 years after its conversion there can’t be many more unusual places to watch a movie. Just as surprising, Loring Hall isn’t an arthouse theater, but shows first-run movies as soon as other theaters.

There’s a balcony in the auditorium, and the screen, sound and seating have all been modernized in the last few years.

5. Old Ship Church

Old Ship Church

The only surviving 17th-century Puritan meetinghouse in the United States stands at 107 Main Street. Dating back to 1681, this is also the oldest church in continuous use as a place of worship in North America.

The Old Ship Church was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1960, and contains several original meetinghouse furnishings, including a christening bowl that predates the 17th century and is thought to have come to the Massachusetts Bay Colony with emigrants from Hingham, England.

On the gently rolling landscape behind is the Old Ship Burying Ground, where you’ll find the burial place of many of Hingham’s earliest settlers, with memento mori headstones.

6. Hingham Heritage Museum (Hingham Historical Society)

Hingham Heritage Museum

The Hingham Historical Society was founded in 1914 and looks after a couple of fascinating old properties in the town.

The headquarters and Hingham Heritage Museum are housed in the stately Old Derby Academy, built in the Federal style in 1818.

The private Derby Academy, founded in 1784, is the oldest coeducational institution in the United States, and relocated to new premises in 1960.

On the second floor, society’s changing exhibits tell the story of Hingham through the centuries, touching on mackerel fishing, seafaring, shipbuilding, and manufacturing, in particular bucket making. The society’s archives are on the third floor, and there’s a visitor center and museum shop downstairs.

7. Bare Cove Park

Bare Cove Park

From 1917 up to the early 1970s a big stretch of east bank of the Weymouth Back River was occupied by the Hingham Naval Ammunition Depot, which employed close to 2,500 civilians and military personnel.

One of the famous people stationed in Hingham was saxophonist John Coltrane, who performed in the depot’s own jazz band. Today, 484 acres are a town-owned park, serving as a wildlife sanctuary and a place for low-impact public recreation.

There are five miles of paved and woodland trails in Bare Cove Park, with scenic riverside paths looking across to the wooded esker on the Weymouth bank.

You’ll come across plenty of traces of the old depot, from wharfs and mooring poses along the riverfront to bunkers hidden in the woods.

8. The Old Ordinary

The Old Ordinary

Hingham Historical Society maintains this early tavern that was donated in 1920 by the writer and philanthropist Wilmon Brewer (1895-1998).

The Old Ordinary was set on the main stagecoach road from Boston and got its name as a place where travelers could stop “for an ordinary meal” and a drink. Built in 1686, the Old Ordinary served as a tavern for more than 150 years.

On the same campus is a refined formal garden landscaped by the Olmsted Firm at the turn of the 20th century, as well as the 17th-century Old Fort House and the Arts and Crafts Annex.

You can come for tours and special events, mid-June through September, while the much-loved Candlelight Tours take place in November.

9. Wompatuck State Park

Wompatuck State Park

Most of this 3,500-acre public recreation area sits within Hingham’s boundaries. If you want to escape to nature in Hingham this is a great place to start, with a 250-site campground, 40 miles of forest trails and another 12 miles of safe roads that are closed to motorized traffic.

Something truly remarkable near the campground is Mt Blue Spring, which has provided free, exceptionally pure spring water since it was tapped in the mid-19th century.

Like Bare Cove Park, this space is on a big piece of the Hingham Naval Ammunition Depot, and old military infrastructure litters the park.

In the north, the depot’s old Whitney Spur railroad has been turned into a rail trail, connecting Wompatuck State Park with a network of trails through neighboring reservations.

10. Stodder’s Neck

Dog Park

Jutting out into the Weymouth Back River next to a patch of redeveloped waterfront is a peninsula that was previously the site of a sand and gravel pit.

Stodder’s Neck is now a popular spot for dog walking, especially as dogs are allowed off-leash to splash around in the river here.

There’s a fence at the head of the peninsula for extra peace of mind, and the main loop leads around the water’s edge. At the center is a sparsely wooded hilltop, which is a great vantage point for the mouth of the river and Boston Harbor.

11. Whitney and Thayer Woods

Whitney and Thayer Woods

Spilling over into Cohasset, more than 5,000 acre of Hingham’s interior are publicly accessible, as there’s a patchwork of reservations linking with Wompatuck State Park.

The largest of these is Whitney and Thayer Woods, in the care of the Trustees of Reservations. At almost 900 acres, this parcel of woodlands with glacial erratics, streams and vernal pools was the estate of industrialist Henry Melville Whitney (1839-1923).

Following old carriage roads you hike or bicycle through hardwood forest and open fields, arriving at some of the area’s most spectacular glacial erratics.

One grouping, known as Ode’s Den, is named for a 19th-century hermit who lived under one of the boulders after losing his home in 1830.

Climb neighboring Turkey Hill for a beautiful view of Cohasset Harbor, while the Milliken Memorial Path, dating to the 1920s, is stunning for its rhododendron and azalea blossoms in spring.

12. Weir River Farm

Weir River Farm

Adjoining Whitney and Thayer Woods, this working farm and nature reserve, also owned by the Trustees of Reservations, was the summer home of the Boston painter and pastel artist Polly Thayer Starr (1904-2006).

Starr donated Weir River Farm in 1999, and you can come to wander the footpaths weaving through open fields, pastures and oak and red cedar woods.

For kids the best part will be seeing the animals, among them goats, pigs, horses, cows, sheep and a llama.

The trails on Weir River Farm connect with Whitney & Thayer Woods, and then Wompatuck State Park, providing thousands of acres of contiguous open space to explore.

13. Bare Cove Fire Museum

Bare Cove Fire Museum

By the entrance to Bare Cove Park there’s a delightful museum documenting the long history of firefighting in Hingham.

The Bare Cove Fire Museum was established in 1974, and has an enthralling collection of historic equipment to check out.

In beautiful condition there’s an array of engines and ladder trucks, from 1922, 1924, 1935 and 1939, as well as a hand engine from the turn of the 20th century.

You can take a look at the progress of a Dodge/Maxim 1937 Forest Wagon, undergoing restoration.

Exhibits on the walls recount half-forgotten events in the town’s history, such as the Hingham High School fire of 1927.

14. Patriot Cinemas at the Hingham Shipyard

Movie Theater

In 2009 the local Patriot Cinemas company, which also runs the theater at Loring Hall, also opened a multiplex on the site of the WWII Bethlehem Hingham Shipyard, close to the ferry docks.

This first-run cinema has Colonial-inspired architecture, with a clapboard facade, pilasters and a cupola above the lobby.

Inside is a modern, well-appointed facility that has six auditoriums, all with stadium seating. The theater is one element of Hingham Launch, a large redeveloped area with new residential streets to the east, but also a great choice of restaurants in front for date nights and family days out.

15. Derby Street Shops

Shopping

This upscale outdoor shopping mall, opened in the mid-2000s, is on Hingham’s southwestern corner, and has around 65 shops and restaurants.

Derby Street Shops is laid out on long, tree-lined sidewalks, with vintage style street lamps and storefronts evoking New England seaside towns.

When we wrote this article, a few of the retailers at the mall were Allbirds, Sephora, Banana Republic, Barnes & Noble, LOFT, American Eagle, Levi’s, Kohl’s Gap, J. Crew, Apple and Whole Foods.

For food and drink there are branches of CAVA, Chipotle, Panera, Legal C Bar and Bertucci’s.

The Town of Hingham, incorporated in 1635, covers an area of 25.04 square miles. The town’s history is reflected in its many immaculately kept antique houses, including the “Old Ordinary” on Lincoln Street, which houses the Hingham Historical Society Museum. Hingham’s tree-lined streets, white clapboard colonial homes and scenic harbor reflect the decidedly New England character of the town. Green farmlands, a town forest and the Wompatuck State Park give the community a rural flavor.

Did you know?

The town of Hingham wasn’t always known as Hingham. It was first settled by Europeans in 1633 and named Bare Cove. The town was later incorporated in 1635 and renamed Hingham.

Crime & Public Safety

Crime & public safety | hingham apple store crash: massachusetts prosecutors call defense request a ‘fishing expedition’, the defense team is trying to blame the fatal crash on toyota technology.

A Hingham man is accused of slamming his SUV into an Apple Store, killing one person and seriously injuring 22 others. (Matt Stone/Boston Herald)

Bradley Rein’s defense team is trying to blame the fatal crash on Toyota technology, claiming that the vehicle’s software caused the SUV to unintentionally accelerate and slam into the store.

Rein’s defense lawyer recently filed a motion directed at Herb Chambers Toyota of Boston — seeking “All customer complaints of unintended acceleration for all Toyota models for model years 2015-2022” and “All customer complaints of vehicle speed increasing without operator applying pressure to the accelerator years 2015-2022.”

But prosecutors with the Plymouth County District Attorney’s on Tuesday filed a motion in opposition to this defense request, calling it “overbroad, vague, irrelevant to the defendant’s case.”

Rein is accused of slamming his vehicle into the Apple Store, killing one person and seriously injuring 22 others. He has been indicted on one count of murder in the second degree and one count of motor vehicle homicide by reckless operation in the death of 65-year-old Kevin Bradley, who lived in Wayne, N.J.

The prosecutors in their Tuesday motion noted that Rein gave two recorded interviews with police on the day of the crash, lasting more than 60 minutes in total.

“At no time did the defendant claim that his vehicle accelerated without the accelerator pedal being pressed,” the prosecutors wrote. “Instead, the defendant stated that his foot became ‘stuck’ on the accelerator pedal.

” ‘On my car, um, it’s a 4Runner – and this has happened before – is, is, my right foot gets stuck on the accelerator,’ ” Rein allegedly told police. ” ‘It doesn’t- it’s, it’s like how can that happen? But the design of it is like it kinda gets, your foot can get sort of stuck in between the pedal and then to the right of it. And that’s what happened. It’s happened to me before once.’ ”

The Plymouth DA prosecutors had a section in their motion titled, “Fishing expedition.”

“With this motion, the defendant casts the broadest possible net in the hopes of finding something, currently unknown to him, that will assist in his defense,” they wrote, adding, “It is a fishing expedition, and it should be denied.”

Rein’s defense attorney Joan Fund said she will be filing a response to the DA’s motion.

Rein allegedly drove his SUV through the Hingham Apple Store’s plate glass storefront window at around 10:45 a.m. on Nov. 21, 2022, leaving a gaping hole in the storefront.

Hingham Police responded to the crash in the Derby Shops after receiving 911 calls about a vehicle plowing into the store’s window, with multiple people injured.

Upon arrival, first responders found Apple employees and other bystanders treating victims who needed urgent care. Many victims were transported to South Shore Hospital. Bradley was pronounced dead at the scene.

The next date for the court case is June 27.

Black bear sightings on the South Shore raise questions. Here are some answers.

Bear last seen in scituate thursday..

worldwide travel hingham ma

So many bear questions, so little time.

A black bear traveling north from Plymouth has been seen on a porch, in yards, crossing a street, taking a swim and coming face to face with a dog in Cohasset before heading to World's End in Hingham the beginning of the week reemerging in Marshfield by last Friday.

Now he − or possibly another bear − was spotted by a Quincy police officer near the BJ's Wholesale Club on Crown Colony Drive late Tuesday, July 27.

You have to wonder, what is he −or they − up to? (Hint: sex is definitely involved.)

We'll try to answer many of your questions.

Sightings of a black bear were first reported in May as it traveled through Taunton, Fall River, Dartmouth, New Bedford, Acushnet and Marion.

As bear reports moved north to Plymouth, Carver and Lakeville, it wasn't clear whether there was one bear, two or even more.

That question was somewhat resolved when dual sightings were confirmed in Lakeville and Carver on May 31.

One bear, two bears or more on the South Shore?

"I still think all the sightings down south were one bear, but suddenly, as it made its way into Plymouth, it seemed the sightings split," said David Wattles, a biologist for MassWildlife .

Since then, one of the bears has continued north. Sightings have been reported in towns including Plymouth, Plympton, Marshfield, Pembroke, Scituate, Cohasset, Hull and Hingham.

"We do not know how many bears are in the Southeast region from these reports," said Nicole McSweeney, the assistant director of outreach and education at MassWildlife. "We know there is certainly more than one bear from the reports, and likely a few more that are staying out of the spotlight."

Weymouth and Braintree police have not reported any sightings so far, and a spokesperson for the Quincy Police Department said they have not received any reports that a bear may be coming their way.

The Cohasset dog encounter was Monday, when Katie Dunn recorded a video of her 6-year-old Great Pyrenees, Lars, facing off with a growling bear in her family's backyard.

The incident was “shocking and scary,” she told Storyful.com .

The video footage shows a large white dog near the edge of the yard peering over bushes toward a bear. People in the background are heard asking why Lars is wagging his tail, and someone says, “Come on, Lars. It’s just a black bear in the backyard. Don’t worry.”

Great Pyrenees dogs are livestock guardians bred to deter and fight off predators, Dunn told Storyful. She and her family were afraid that Lars might attack the bear to defend them, so they tried to act like “it was not a big deal and just a friendly animal in the yard.”

Lars was taken inside and the bear swam away in the pond behind the family's Jerusalem Road home.

How much do black bears weigh?

While the sex of the (at least) two bears has not been confirmed, McSweeney said the one seen in Plymouth is believed to be a male about 2 years old, given its appearance and behavior so far.

"The distance of travel is not unusual (for males)," McSweeney said.

Yearlings, or bears 1 to 2 years old, generally leave their mother after around 17 months in a process known as dispersal.

"Dispersing males travel long distances to establish a new territory," McSweeney said. "It is looking for space and potential mates."

Females do not usually travel so far as they mature and enter breeding age around 3 to 4 years old. Size and other physical differences, such as body shape (males have boxier builds), make it easier to tell the sex of the bears as they mature.

McSweeney said her agency does not have a weight estimate for the bear. A male that age can weigh from 100 to 120 pounds, according to the website bear.org .

At full maturity, males can weigh up to 600 pounds, although its more often 100 to 300 pounds less than that. They can reach a standing height of 7 feet.

How many black bears are there in Massachusetts?

American black bears – Ursus americanus, should it come up on trivia night – are endemic to North America. The National Park Service estimates 750,000 of them are in the U.S.

According to MassWildlife, the state's bear population is easily over 4,500, with an expected annual increase of 8%. The species has long been common in the central and western parts of the state and is slowly expanding eastward.

Despite the occasional appearance of black bears, which are the only bear species in the state, the South Shore is not considered part of the bears' normal range.

Given the bears' overall population increase, they are listed as being of "least concern" for extinction by the International Union for Conservation of Nature .

While an exact figure for the Southeastern Massachusetts bear population may be hard to pin down, their presence is not new to the area.

A dubbed Boo Boo drew an equal amount of attention in 2021 as it made its way north from Wareham to the South Shore before returning to the South Coast, where it died from injuries after it was hit by a car on Interstate 95 in Marion on June 24.

Bear sightings continued into 2022.

"We kind of had this last year where we think three to five different bears at different points of the summer moved through different parts of Southeastern Massachusetts, so it's becoming a more regular thing," Wattles said.

Where are the bears being seen statewide?

A statewide black bear interactive map has been developed by MassBears , a collaborative  research project by MassWildlife, the Massachusetts Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit , Amherst College and UMass-Amherst. The map has sightings from 2019 on. The 2023 sightings are being added regularly, although the recent regional sightings are not yet on the map.

What do black bears do all year?

According to MassWildlife and other sources, black bears typically start to hibernate – or “den” – in November and December. They emerge from March to mid-April.

Black bears mate in June and July, but embryonic development does not begin until November or December. Cubs are born in late January/early February.

Female bears, or sows, reproduce every other year and usually have two or three cubs per litter.

While black bears can live into their 30s in captivity, most do not make it that far, according to a 15-page document called “Coexisting with Black Bears in Massachusetts” co-authored by wildlife experts at UMass-Amherst and MassWildlife.

Mortality is highest among young dispersing bears because of inexperience, competition, movement into unfamiliar territory in pursuit of food and a settlement area, as well as the sort of human-bear interactions that led to Boo Boo's death.

What is the South Shore bear up to?

The bear isn't just trying to show he's not a failure-to-launch sort of cub.

"June is also the peak of the mating season for bears, so there will be lots of activity and movement associated with mating," McSweeney said. "Additionally, bears are searching for food at a time of year when natural foods like berries are still not available."

Being omnivores, black bears will eat whatever they can get their paws on, whether vegetable, insect or animal.

Is the state planning to relocate the bear?

"MassWildlife and other related agencies will only take steps to relocate the bear if it is in danger or creating a dangerous situation for others," McSweeney said.

MassWildlife and other related agencies will only take steps to relocate the bear if it is in danger or creating a dangerous situation for others. Nicole McSweeney, assistant director of outreach and education at MassWildlife

If such a situation does occur, she said the Massachusetts Environmental Police or MassWildlife will provide advice and determine if a response from the state Large Animal Response Team is necessary.

McSweeney and other experts and officials say the best thing residents can do when seeing a bear is nothing.

More: Buster the bear continues his travels. Here's where he was last seen

"The mere presence of a bear in a populated area is not a public safety threat, and the bear will usually leave the area on its own," she said. "If left alone, the bear will most likely move back into a forested area where it can establish and settle into its new territory."

While many local police departments are using their Facebook pages to report sightings and provide updates to residents, they do not need to be contacted whenever an uneventful sighting occurs.

What should I do to keep bears away?

  • Remove bird feeders, pet food and human food from outside.
  • Secure all trash/recycling containers.
  • Clean and cover all grills.
  • To protect your pets, consider not leaving them outside in your yard alone, and when walking a dog, use a leash (so you can control them and remove them should you encounter a bear).

Bear aggression warning signs

That black bear's growl you hear on TV is just an overdub of a grizzly bear's roar.

Black bears have been responsible for fewer than 100 human deaths in North America since 1900, according to bear.org.

Most attacks by black bears are defensive reactions to a person who is too close.

Physical signs a black bear feels threatened include slapping the ground with its paws, huffing or blowing air forcefully through its nose or mouth and snapping its teeth together.

When a black bear is feeling threatened or scared, it will more likely run or climb a tree than try to attack.

If the bear becomes aggressive, contact your local police department for help. MassWildlife can also be contacted.
