The Smithsonian’s National Zoo is home to over a dozen species of primates.

The homestead for the Zoo’s gorillas and orangutans is the Great Ape House . Within the house, floor-to-ceiling viewing panes allow visitors to view these endangered animals up close. Having a choice of how to spend their time is critical to great ape care, so enclosures are designed to provide the animals with opportunities to use their natural behaviors in new and exciting ways. Whether inside or outside, the apes have an opportunity to climb trees and multi-level platforms, rest in a hammock; swing from hanging ropes and fire hoses, engage in enriching activities (such as training and painting) and forage for food.

Walking between the Great Ape House to Think Tank? Look up! Orangutans travel along the O-Line , a 50-foot-high suspended cable track that gives them the freedom to move between their yards at the Great Ape House and Think Tank. Orangutans have the choice to use the O-Line on nice weather days from late morning to the early afternoon.

The interactive Think Tank exhibit is the place to think about animal thinking! Visitors are introduced to orangutans, Allen’s swamp monkeys, Schmidt’s red-tailed monkeys, Norway rats, and land hermit crabs to explore the concept of thinking through three main themes: language, society and tool use. Learn more about the Zoo’s ongoing primate research projects, see the monkeys illustrate the rules of living in a society, and observe rats navigating their exhibit, highlighting their physical abilities and flexible decision-making skills.

Inside Think Tank, participate in a tug-of-war with an orangutan at the orangutan rope-pull and test their arm strength. Looking at the animals outside? Get caught under a mist of water—turned on by an orangutan—in the Wet Zone . The outdoor orangutan exhibit is fitted with two mister shower heads. The push valves are operable only by the apes, who will have the ability to shower a visitor, themselves or both.

At Gibbon Ridge , visitors can see white-cheeked gibbons and siamangs swing through the ropes and branches. The Zoo’s tall outdoor enclosures are fitted with platforms, ropes and swings that encourage these lesser apes to navigate their habitat just as they would in the wild. With their long arms and hands, gibbons are adapted to moving fast high in the tree canopy using an arm-over-arm motion called “brachiation.” When walking on the ground, they place their arms above their head for balance.

Ring-tailed lemurs, red-fronted lemurs and black-and-white ruffed lemurs live on Lemur Island . Throughout the day, lemurs may be found basking in the sun, jumping through the trees, or huddled together, often grooming one another to strengthen their social bonds.

Depending on the time of day and weather conditions, all of the lemurs and apes have a choice to be in their indoor or outdoor enclosures. Great apes tend to be active in the morning and nap in the mid to late afternoon. Our gorillas and orangutans also have the option to enjoy some time away from the crowds in off-exhibit areas behind the scenes.

  • Conservation

Keepers provide the primates with  enrichment —enclosures, socialization, objects, sounds, smells and other stimuli—to enhance their well-being and give them an outlet to demonstrate their species-typical behaviors.

In addition to the Orangutan Rope-Pull and Wet Zone exhibits at Think Tank, animals have plenty of activities to keep them busy throughout the day. The Zoo’s primates receive between four and eight forms of enrichment every day to keep them physically and mentally active. Keepers maintain a detailed calendar to ensure that the items and experiences remain novel and interesting. Novel items and activities include iPads (for playing with various apps), musical instruments, painting, mirrors, boomer balls, rubber tubs, burlap, paper and boxes among others. Check out videos of ape enrichment in action:  playing with the iPad ,  medical training , and  painting !

No day is routine; keepers offer the primates various activities to stimulate cognition. As with any enrichment, the animals have the flexibility and choice to participate in the activity or walk away. These activities range from participating in a research demonstration, to training with a keeper, to creating an abstract painting on a canvas using non-toxic, water-based paint. Zoo visitors can watch great ape cognition research in action during Think Tank’s daily animal demonstration. Check the  daily calendar of events  schedule for demonstration times.

To encourage the animals to use their natural behaviors, keepers will often spread food around the enclosure and hide it within enrichment items. For example, keepers will often mix hay with smaller foods—such as fruits, herbs, popcorn and seeds—so that the primates spend a significant portion of their day foraging, just as they would in the wild. Often, keepers place food in special feeders or hard-to-reach spots to give the apes an opportunity to climb and create tools to obtain these treats. In addition to foraging, each animal receives an individual diet of nutrient-dense foods to ensure proper nutrition. On any given day, primates may receive: kale, celery, green beans, carrots, sweet potatoes, white potatoes, romaine, kale, cabbage, bananas, apples, oranges, mango, grapes, melon, papaya, onions, broccoli, turnips, squash, cucumbers, nuts, seeds and primate chow.

At the Zoo, gorillas and orangutans use hay, sheets, and a variety of other materials to build nests. They also receive browse (fresh plant trimmings), the type of which varies, but may include bamboo, banana leaves, Bradford pear, willow, mulberry or maple trimmings.

Social enrichment applies to the manner in which our primates are housed, as well as to the activities they participate in with animal care staff. Housing primates in appropriate social situations is one of the most significant ways to enrich their lives. Primates have active minds and complex social relationships, and companionship provides a constant source of stimulation. The keepers also provide social enrichment by engaging in games of chase, tickle, research or training sessions with the primates to engage them as well as strengthen social bonds.

The Small Mammal House hosts several other species of New World primates, including golden lion tamarins, golden-headed lion tamarins, red-ruffed lemurs, pale-headed saki monkeys, Geoffroy's marmoset and black howler monkeys.

The  Great Cats  exhibit is located near the Speedwell Foundation Conservation Carousel. Visitors can observe Sumatran tigers, African lions, caracals and bobcats at this location.

The  Reptile Discovery Center  celebrates the diversity, beauty and unique adaptations of more than 70 reptiles and amphibians. It is located between the Great Ape House and Think Tank.

The  Great Meadow  picnic area is located adjacent to the Reptile Discovery Center.

A little farther away, visitors can see also see titi monkeys on exhibit in Amazonia .

All of the primates exhibited at the Zoo participate in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan (SSP). The SSP Steering Committee determines which animals to breed by considering their genetic makeup, nutritional and social needs, temperament and overall health.

One way to determine what makes the human mind unique is by studying the minds of primate relatives. At Think Tank, Zoo scientists are looking closely at how great apes think in order to better understand what is unique about the human mind. How do apes approach the processes that make up social learning, such as memory and spatial understanding?

Monkey size compared to a soccer ball

Monkeys eat all kinds of things: flowers, fruits, nuts, leaves, seeds, insects, birds’ eggs, spiders, and small mammals. Baboons will also eat meat when they can catch it, including young antelope, rabbits, and birds like guinea fowl. Colobus monkeys and langurs like leaves, and geladas graze on grass!

Rainforests

Most monkeys live in trees, in rainforests and other places.  Baboons live in savannas, open wooded areas, and rocky hillsides. Although they are able to climb trees, they spend most of their time on the ground.

description

Monkey in a tree

Most of these magnificent, mischievous, and sometimes mysterious monkeys are arboreal, meaning they spend much of their lives in trees. They have many different adaptations, depending on their habitat. Macaques, baboons, and some mangabeys spend most of their time on the ground.

Marmoset

Tail of two worlds

Monkeys are found in two main regions of the world, so scientists have grouped them as either Old World monkeys or New World monkeys. Old World monkeys are found in Africa and Asia. Some examples are guenons, mangabeys, macaques, baboons, and colobus monkeys. New World monkeys are found in Mexico, Central America, and South America. Some examples are woolly monkeys, spider monkeys, howler monkeys, capuchin monkeys, and squirrel monkeys. Marmosets and tamarins also live where New World monkeys are found, but are different enough to be in their own scientific grouping.

Monkey Troop

Groups of troops

Groups of monkeys, called troops, travel together by day to find food. A troop can number from a few individuals to a thousand or more. Within huge troops, monkeys form smaller groups, called harems, which include an adult male, several adult females, and their offspring. Unattached adult males, called bachelors, may form their own group. To build family bonds, monkeys engage in daily mutual grooming.

Monkey at the top of a tree.

One exception to monkeys living in large groups is the gray titi monkey, native to the tropical forests of Bolivia. These small monkeys, weighing about two pounds, live in small, monogamous family units made up of the parents and their immature offspring.

Monkey holding a branch with its feet.

Monkey feet are as flexible as their hands, and that helps them travel along small branches high up in the rainforest canopy.

Mokey holding from a branch with its tail.

Tails that hold on

All monkeys can use their hands and feet for holding on to branches, but some arboreal monkeys can use their tails, too. Tails that can grab and hold are called prehensile. These special tails are ridged on the underside and very flexible, so much so that they can grab a tree branch or pick up something as small as a peanut!

Black Howler Monkey

Scientific Name: Alouatta caraya

Conservation Status:

Near Threatened IUCN Red List

Known for their haunting, lion-like roars, black howler monkeys are considered the loudest land animal in the world. Their calls can be heard up to three miles away and can reach 140 decibels. (A jet engine at takeoff is about 150 decibels—loud enough to rupture eardrums.) These monkeys howl to establish their territories and howling sessions can begin at sunrise and last more than an hour. Neighboring troops howl back and forth to declare their locations, allowing them to avoid each other. Family groups are small, with up to eight members. Howler monkeys have prehensile tails, which means they can be used like an extra limb to grasp branches and pick up objects. A naked patch under the tip of the tail has ridges and grooves that are unique to each monkey and allow for a strong grip.

zoo monkey travel

Black howler monkeys live in the middle and upper parts of the tree canopies in the forests of central South America.

In addition to the leaves that make up most of their diet, these herbivores also eat figs, plums, buds, flowers, nuts, and leaves. Leaves are not very energy-dense, so howlers spend up to 70 percent of their time resting on branches with their limbs dangling.

Physical Characteristics

If you encounter a troop of black howlers in a zoo or in the wild, you might think you are looking at two different species. The species is sexually dimorphic, which means males and females differ in appearance. In addition to males being larger than females, these monkeys are also sexually dichromatic, meaning the sexes are different colors—males are black while females and juveniles are a golden color. Males measure 24 to 26 inches long with a 24- to 26-inch tail. Females’ bodies are slightly shorter at about 20 inches. Weight ranges from 15 to 30 pounds. Their lifespan is 15–20 years.

Pygmy marmoset sits on a bunch of bananas

Pygmy Marmoset

  • CLASS: Mammalia (Mammals)
  • ORDER: Primate
  • FAMILY: Cebidae
  • GENUS: Callithrix
  • SPECIES: pygmaea

Mini monkeys:  High in the rainforest canopy of South America lives a tiny monkey. It dodges behind tree trunks and branches, freezing and dashing, just like a squirrel. It also has brown fur and a long tail like a squirrel—but it's a pygmy marmoset, the world's smallest monkey!

Marmosets and their cousins, the tamarins, are some of the tiniest primates around. A full-grown pygmy marmoset could fit in an adult human's hand, and it weighs about as much as a stick of butter. But there is nothing tiny about a pygmy marmoset's tail: it's longer than its body! The tail is not prehensile, but it helps the little monkey keep its balance as it gallops through the treetops.

Both male and female pygmy marmosets are orange-brown. Each hair has stripes of brown and black, called agouti coloring. This coloration gives them good camouflage. A mane of hair covers the pygmy marmoset's ears. Most primates have flat nails on the ends of their fingers, along with opposable thumbs that allow them to grasp objects. Pygmy marmoset fingernails are like claws to help them climb up and down tree trunks. They do not have opposable thumbs.

HABITAT AND DIET

Pygmy marmosets live in the Amazon region of Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, and northern Bolivia. They make their home and living in forest trees or bamboo thickets near or alongside rivers and floodplains. Pygmy marmosets prefer living in dense rainforests where there are lots of hiding places among the plants. Each marmoset group has a small home range of less than half an acre. They feed from just a few trees.

Because they are so small, pygmy marmosets can become prey for cats, harpy eagles, hawks, and snakes. That is why they dash from one safe spot to the next. Their neck is flexible, and they can turn their head backward to spot predators. They are deliberate about their movements to avoid drawing the attention of predators. But when they need to move, pygmy marmosets are fast, leaping several feet to avoid the predators that would like to make a meal out of them.

The ability to climb is important for pygmy marmosets, as tree sap is their favorite food. They scamper up and down trees and thick vines headfirst and gouge a hole in the bark or vine with their sharp lower teeth, using an up-and-down sawing motion. When the sap puddles up in the hole, they lap it up with their tongue. Pygmy marmosets have certain trees they like within their territory; they can make up to 1,300 holes in each tree! Sometimes they lie in wait for insects, especially butterflies, which feed at the sap holes. The marmosets also eat some nectar and fruit.

At the San Diego Zoo, pygmy marmosets eat veggies, fruit, a specialized commercial diet for New World monkeys, crickets, mealworms, wax worms, and hard-boiled eggs.

FAMILY LIFE

Pygmy marmosets live in extended families, called troops , of up to nine monkeys but with an average of five members. Usually the troop has a breeding pair, their babies, and any of their adult children. The parents stay together for life. Living in a group is useful for pygmy marmosets. There are more pairs of eyes to spot predators, and everyone helps take care of the little ones. For added safety, the troop spends the night among thick vines or in a tree hole.

A mother pygmy marmoset's gestation period is about 4.5 months, and she can give birth every 5 to 7 months. She almost always has two babies, but in zoos, pygmy marmosets have had three or even four babies in one litter. Each newborn is about the size of a human thumb! The father helps deliver the babies, cleans them up, and then takes over their care. He carries the newborns piggyback style for their first two weeks, bringing them back to the mother to nurse. Older siblings may help, too. When they are a bit older, the babies hide while the rest of their family looks for food until they are strong enough to travel with the group.

Usually the young marmosets are weaned and can follow the troop by three months of age. It takes them about two years to grow as large as the adults. They may leave the troop at this point to start a family of their own, or they may stay to help raise the newest babies.

Pygmy marmosets communicate with each other by chattering and trilling in high-pitched voices. They can make sounds so high in pitch that humans can’t hear them. Certain squeaks and calls express danger or other urgent monkey messages. They also make faces to express emotions like contentment, surprise, or fear by moving their lips, eyelids, ears, and the hair around their face. We humans do that, too! These mini monkeys groom one another, and that helps establish social bond. They are fussy about keeping their fur in good shape. Pygmy marmoset families have territories marked by scent. This signals neighboring troops to leave each other alone.

CONSERVATION

If the current rate of habitat destruction can be slowed, these tiny monkeys will have a big chance at long-term survival in their forest home. Their largest threat is the pet trade, due to their tiny size, cuddly appearance, and appealing face. We cannot express this enough: monkeys do not make good pets. The United States has banned the import of primates, and most South American countries don't allow primate exports anymore.

By supporting San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, you are our ally in saving and protecting wildlife worldwide.

Save Wildlife. Help us keep this and other species from disappearing forever.

This Incredibly Rare Baby Monkey Was Just Born at an Ohio Zoo— See the Adorable Photos

Say hello to the zoo's newest Francois langur monkey.

zoo monkey travel

An adorable and rare orange baby is now swinging around Cleveland Metroparks Zoo.

The Ohio zoo announced the birth of a Francois langur monkey last month with a series of squeal-worthy cute photos. Although the baby is not yet named, it is already a hit among fans for its big eyes and charming grin.

The species is considered endangered by the People Resources and Conservation Foundation, which notes that there are fewer than 1,000 left in the wild. The monkeys tend to inhabit rocky places with trees but are losing their habitats due to deforestation and hunting.

The baby was born on July 16 to a pair of Francois langurs named Glora and Vinh. This is the second offspring of Glora and Vinh, according to the zoo. Guests at the zoo will be able to see the young monkey on the second floor of "The RainForest'' exhibit during regular visiting hours.

When Francois langurs are born, they are a striking bright orange color, and the reason is evolutionary: The coloring lets adults keep an eye on the babies when they are first born, according to the New England Primate Conservatory. As Francois langurs grow their coats will darken and become a glossy black, which will last for the rest of their life. At full grown the monkeys are about two feet tall and can weigh up to 17 pounds.

The zoo describes Francois langurs as "excellent aerialists," and for good reason. The animals need to be skilled in the trees because they spend a good deal of time eating leaves, and fruit of flowers when available, according to the zoo. The monkeys also follow diurnal patterns (awake during the day, asleep during the night) and their natural habitat is in Asia, particularly Southeast China, central Laos, and Vietnam.

Admission to the zoo is $18 for adults and $14 for children aged two to 11. The zoo is open every day from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

In a podcast hosted by Lightspeed partner Michael Mignano, Beykpour reminisces about her role in Twitter's history. Later, Beykpour moved to work on mobile at Twitter around the time when other third-party apps were growing in popularity on other platforms, like BlackBerry and iOS.

Monkey Sets Up Shop in Robert Irwin's Hotel Room and His Response Is Perfect

G oing on vacation to a foreign place almost always means running into at least one animal that makes you question everything you know about life. For Maine, it's our crazy pigeons. Florida has those little lizards that are, somehow, not afraid of anything. South Africa, apparently, has monkeys that will walk into your hotel room like they own the place.

Robert Irwin learned this lesson the hard way on Tuesday, May 7th. After a hard day spent exploring, he just wanted to relax - but the monkey had other plans:

There are many possible reasons why this guy made his way into this hotel room. My favorite, as well as a lot of people in the comments', was that he heard that the Robert Irwin was staying there and needed to check it out for himself. Personal space, dude!

Related: Robert Irwin Officially Has a Species Named After Him and It’s Really Cool

Robert has been in South Africa for a little while doing some work with the South African Wildlife Rescue. Across the ocean back home at the Australia Zoo, his own conservation efforts have made him "famous," and his father's legacy has given him a platform to build on. During his time in South Africa so far, he's seen many different animals and been able to offer a lot of good advice!

When he's not doing all of that, though, he's like the rest of us - he wants to chill. Which, when you're in a beautiful hotel room in a beautiful country, is not hard... unless there's a monkey in your room. Then it gets tough. Instead of freaking out like most of us would, he only had one message: "this is why you lock your doors."

Can Monkeys Unlock Doors?

As some of the only animals with thumbs, monkeys can do a lot of things other animals can't. They can hold things properly, turn things, and they're great thieves, that is, if they can get in.

Monkeys can absolutely pick locks, and they actually enjoy doing so. There are plenty of reports of monkeys and apes alike picking locks and escaping from zoos or cages. A monkey who frequents a hotel like this has probably learned that the locks are either easy to pick or that the doors don't lock automatically and all they have to do is turn the knob - another thing they are perfectly capable of. While the front door of a hotel room typically locks automatically, balcony or patio doors are often a different story.

Luckily, this monkey was in good hands, and Robert was probably very calm and collected while he shooed it away. I wonder if he'll turn back up!

Exmoor Zoo welcomes pair of world's smallest foxes

Keepers at the zoo in Devon are asking the public to help name the pair of furry new arrivals.

Saturday 4 May 2024 16:59, UK

Fennec fox. Pic: Exmoor Zoo

A pair of the world's smallest foxes have recently arrived at a zoo in Devon.

The fennec foxes have their own purpose-built enclosure at Exmoor Zoo - a new arrival two years in the planning.

The breed is native to areas of North Africa , including Morocco , the Sahara Desert and Mauritania.

As nocturnal animals, fennec foxes live in underground burrows in the desert, which allows them to keep cool.

Their characteristic large ears also help to dispel heat.

Otherwise known as the desert fox, their prey includes small rodents, snakes, lizards and insects such as grasshoppers and locusts.

But they also eat eggs, roots, leaves and fruit.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.
