On Location: Rachael Leigh Cook Shares Her Vietnam Itinerary From ‘A Tourist’s Guide to Love’

By Rachel Chang

A Tourist's Guide to Love. Le Thien as Ba Noi Scott Ly as Sinh and Rachael Leigh Cook as Amanda in A Tourist's Guide to...

Lifting the curtain on some of the season's most exciting new releases.

As the sun set in Hoi An one evening last spring,  Rachael Leigh Cook gazed out on the Vietnamese scene on the Thu Bon River. Her mom sat beside her beaming ear-to-ear as someone played Peter Gabriel in the distance. “I remember thinking, ‘I don’t want anything else in the world—I just want to be exactly here, where I am,'” the 43-year-old actress says. “That was a transcendent travel moment for me.” It’s exactly that kind of travel magic that’s celebrated in her latest film,  A Tourist’s Guide to Love , a Netflix original, premiering April 21, about travel executive Amanda Riley who is sent undercover to experience a small-group tour company that her American corporation is considering buying. Arriving in Vietnam with a check-list of sights to see, she soon discovers that the most meaningful moments are found veering off the itinerary.

In A Tourist's Guide to Love , Rachael Leigh Cook's Amanda is a lovelorn travel executive who goes undercover to learn more about Vietnam's tourism industry.

Filmed all around the Asian nation—from its major hubs Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi to the beach town of Da Nang and the northeastern province of Ha Giang —Cook was stunned by how unique every corner of the country is. “It seemed too good to be true,” she says. “Then I got there and realized it’s just that beautiful, and people will get to discover that if they watch our movie.”

This movie is such a celebration of travel—how has traveling been a part of your life? I spent my whole childhood in Minnesota . My dad worked in the school system, so we could travel a little bit in the summer, but we never went especially far. My parents are extremely prudent financially and we would stay at youth hostels. I remember we went to the Seattle's Northwest Folklife Festival and saw the fish market . As someone who didn't travel much as a kid, the opportunities to travel that have come from my work have shown me some of the most eye-opening and unexpected moments of my life. And this movie is the pinnacle of that.

The movie starts in Ho Chi Minh City and ends in Hanoi—how do the cities compare? Ho Chi Minh City is bustling. It is hard-working, fast-paced, and kind of crazy. There are incredible rooftops there. There's glamour. Anything that you could want to find, you can find in Ho Chi Minh City. Hanoi is completely different. The energy there is very different. Everyone walks at a slower pace. There's just less sound in the air. The aesthetic is different—and it’s absolutely beautiful.

A Tourist's Guide to Love. Rachael Leigh Cook as Amanda and Scott Ly as Sinh in A Tourist's Guide to Love. Cr. Sasidis...

Scott Ly plays Sinh, an expat tour guide with whom Amanda falls in love.

The first spark of romance comes during a scene in Hoi An—how would you describe it? When people see images of Vietnam that have those streets full of lanterns and borderline Disney magic about them, that's Hoi An. It's stunningly beautiful—I think that that might have been my favorite stop. It’s conveniently very near Da Nang, which is named the most livable city in Vietnam. It's just a gorgeous beach town. I'm not gonna pretend it wasn't hot. Of course it is. It's Vietnam. But a must-see for sure.

The group then ventures off the plan and heads to My Son Sanctuary . What was it like to film there? You can feel the stillness and the history there. Its beauty is transcendent and very special. It feels pretty weird to have lighting equipment on an ancient temple—that juxtaposition is not lost on me. I felt just very grateful that they let us film there. I hope that people want to go check it out after seeing our movie.

The movie purposely skips the Golden Hand Bridge , but did you go there? I totally went to the Golden Hand Bridge. We even say in the movie that it’s awesome, but it's just not steeped in as much history. My mom came out for about 10 days with my kids—they couldn't miss more school, but they came during their spring break—and they absolutely loved it. They've created a theme park after a gondola ride. It takes like 22 minutes to get to the top of this mountain. And then up there is something that I would equate to the scale of maybe like a quarter the size of Disneyland and there are theme park rides up there. There is a giant—I don't want to call it a food hall because it's beautiful—but all these restaurants, it is really worth seeing. The engineering blows my mind. What a gift that we got to experience that together.

The film is set in both bustling Ho Chi Minh City and sleepy Hanoi, giving a glimpse at life in various Vietnamese cities.

Filming the homestay scene in Ha Giang must have been quite a contrast? Ha Giang is mountainous and very beautiful and it's near the border to China. It was probably our most rustic place. It's very much a hard-working community that's seen a lot over the years. It's one of those places I never would have been motivated to come to, but I'm so glad that I did. It’s very user-friendly and the people they're incredibly welcoming. They're excited that you're there. They want to know how you got there. I really just hope they liked the movie—I hope we do them justice.

What were your favorite food experiences in Vietnam?   The food that I ate way too much of that I have not been able to find as good since I've returned back here is bánh xèo. That's my favorite thing. It's like a very thin egg pancake with fresh vegetables quickly cooked in it, and it gets wrapped up like a pancake. So it's sort of like a burrito without the burrito. And oh my gosh, the sauces with it. It's delicious. I did try the durian. I was impressed by the taste. It's in the family of sweetness of a mango, almost. I found the consistency [was] what I couldn't really get behind. And obviously this smell—it is as advertised.

A Tourist's Guide to Love. Rachael Leigh Cook as Amanda and Le Thien as Ba Noi in A Tourist's Guide to Love. Cr....

Cook notes the difference between a tourist—someone who wants to escape their life—and a traveler, who does so in order to experience theirs.

Amanda is a very over-prepared traveler. How would you categorize yourself? My packing style is not impressive. If I have a week to pack, it'll take a week. If I have three hours to pack, it'll take three hours. If I have 30 minutes, it'll take 30 minutes. The results are all the same. It's never better or worse. My travel style is generally unprepared and heavy on recommendations. I love knowing where people say to go, especially if it's friends or friends of friends, I find that the most fun and reliable way to sort of like wade through a city. I also like to stay where it makes things central, so I can walk as much as possible. I'm a little bit daunted by taking underground systems where I can get lost because I have no sense of direction.

What’s been your favorite interaction with a stranger while traveling? I made friends with this woman when I was working [on 2014’s  Red Sky ] in Russia. She spoke no English and I speak no Russian, but we could just tell that we liked each other and that we had a similar vibe and humor, and we still found ways to laugh together. I remember her very fondly—she's such a special soul.

A Tourist's Guide to Love. Rachael Leigh Cook as Amanda in A Tourist's Guide to Love. Cr. Sasidis SasisakulpornNetflix ©...

Cook's own travel style is different from the overprepared Amanda—the actress relies largely on recommendations.

What’s a place you’d always go back to? A place I've been twice and I hope I go many times is Moorea , near Bora Bora [and] Tahiti . I think it was Marlon Brando who lived out in Bora Bora because he knew that his heart rate would drop by like 20 percent the second he touched down there, and I could feel it in myself too. It's just so relaxing and centering.

What do you think it is about travel that makes us let go? In the movie, we say a tourist is someone who wants to escape their lives, and a traveler is someone who wants to experience theirs. But I think that those sentiments go hand-in-hand. Sometimes you gotta jump out of the boat that you're in to be able to experience a new thing, and that's okay. Getting out of your comfort zone is what creates and inspires lasting memories. You don't know how long life is going to be, and you should spend your life on experience.

A Tourist's Guide to Love Takes Viewers to Incredible Filming Locations in Vietnam

The Netflix rom-com is giving us major wanderlust.

Ho Chi Minh City

Formerly known as Saigon, Ho Chi Minh City is the largest city in Vietnam. It’s where Amanda starts her trip. Along with the tour group, she browses Ben Thanh Market , one of the city's many lively markets where visitors can grab anything from fresh produce to garments and handcrafted items.

In Hoi An, an ancient town on Vietnam’s central coast, the tour group goes sightseeing, visiting spots like Quon Cong Temple . Hoi An turned out to be Do’s favorite place to film. “The town’s character is so unique,” the production designer says. “My team and I designed and created a total of four main locations within Hoi An.”

Do’s team set out to elevate the existing value of each location. The tailor shop was one such spot, created at a Yaly Couture shop. “Knowing their newest collection was not on current display, I took the privilege of turning their vintage courtyard into a brand-new showcase area with the most unique pieces of Yaly’s latest designs,” Do says. “And with the appropriate addition of the peacocks and some jays, this center area was transformed into an authentic colorful royal garden for our scene.”

The dreamy lantern-lit street that Amanda and Sinh wander down is another creation. While Hoi An is known for lanterns and small lantern-covered streets, none as elaborate as the one in the film existed. So, Do's ordered more than a thousand lanterns in various shapes and sizes. At more than half a mile long, it was constructed over four hot summer days—and it still stands. “We were very honored when Hoi An People’s Committee and Department of Culture asked production to leave this set intact for future tourists to enjoy,” Do says.

When Amanda and Sinh partake in the water lantern festival, they’re on the bank of the Thu Bon River . That experience “is a treat to even a Vietnamese person because the actual festival only happens once a year, and it is rare for a tourist to conveniently be in Hoi An during such time,” Do explains.

Filming also took place at the Hoi An Hotel , which functioned like a studio since it was closed at the time due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “We were going to name it Da Nguyet (Moon Watching) Hotel, but since the flower vines, after months of pandemic, had beautifully covered the sign of the hotel, we decided to let nature be the voice.”

The coastal city of Da Nang was tapped as a filming location for its sandy beaches. About an hour away from Da Nang and Hoi An, filming also took place at My Son Sanctuary . The Unesco World Heritage site encompasses the remains of tower temples and “was the religious and political capital of the Champa Kingdom for most of its existence,” according to Unesco . Surrounded by mountains, the area is set in a stunning geological basin.

Sinh’s family home is located in Hà Giang, on the banks of the Lô River in northeastern Vietnam. “Hà Giang, and Hà Giang city in particular, was an incredible opportunity to show Vietnam’s cultural ethnic heritage and roots,” Do says of the area. It took the cast and crew six hours to get there from Hanoi. “Its rustic, countryside beauty with fields and terraces of rice really lent the off-the-beaten-track value to the film.”

The pure beauty and cultural value aren’t the only aspects that made filming in the location extra special. “It could very well be the last time that that old village is filmed, as Hà Giang is developing at such a rapid speed, meaning a traveler would need to drive eight, even 10 hours to see the likes of that kind of village again,” Do says.

the hanoi opera house was built by the french colonial

Vietnam’s capital of Hanoi served as the backdrop for the film’s final scenes. Both the interior and exterior for the water puppet show were shot at Thang Long National Water Puppet Theatre , which is located in the heart of the city and near one of Vietnam’s most famous lakes called Ho Hoan Kiem. “The traditional art of performing water puppet shows dates back as far as the 11th century from the people whose life were nurtured by the water of the Red River,” Do says. “For us, it was a mission to bring this art form into our film.”

The heartwarming moment between Amanda and Sinh at the end was filmed at the iconic roundabout in front of the Hanoi Opera House , which was built by the French from 1901 through 1911 and was inspired by classical Greek architecture and Paris’s Palais Garnier.

In Hanoi, filming also took place at the Tirant Hotel . Located on Gia Ngu Street in the Old Quarter, the hotel has operated since 2011. Surrounded by beloved restaurants and entertainment venues, it’s ideal for both business and leisure travelers.

Welcomed by a charming and free-spirited Vietnamese tour guide named Sinh, Amanda arrives right in time for the Vietnamese Lunar New Year celebration. As the two embark on a scenic journey across the country, they begin developing feelings for each other and, eventually, fall in love.

However, when Amanda’s ex pays a surprise visit to her in Vietnam, a love triangle ensues as she must choose between the two men in her life. Besides Cook, the romantic drama movie features talented cast members, including Scott Ly , Missi Pyle, Ben Feldman, Nondumiso Tembe, and Andrew Barth Feldman. The voyage of self-discovery that Amanda embarks along with Sinh gives us a glimpse into some of the picturesque sites in Vietnam, be it the city life or the countryside. Thus, many of you might wonder about the actual filming sites of ‘A Tourist’s Guide to Love.’ In that case, allow us to fill you in on all the details!

A Tourist’s Guide to Love Filming Locations

‘A Tourist’s Guide to Love’ was filmed in Vietnam, specifically in Hanoi, Quang Nam, Ho Chi Minh City, Hà Giang, and Da Nang. As per reports, the principal photography for the rom-com film commenced in April 2022 and wrapped up around mid-June of the same year. Interestingly, it is the first US movie to be entirely shot on location in Vietnam. Now, let’s follow Amanda and Sinh on their life-changing journey and get a detailed account of all the specific places that appear in the Netflix movie!

Hanoi, Vietnam

The capital of Vietnam, Hanoi, served as one of the prominent production locations for ‘A Tourist’s Guide to Love’ as the filming unit utilized numerous locales and streets for shooting the film. With various exterior shots of the city incorporated into the romantic movie, you are likely to notice a few iconic landmarks and lakes, including Turtle Tower, Hanoi Opera House, Imperial Citadel of Thăng Long, West Lake, Trúc Bạch Lake, and Bảy Mẫu Lake.

The diversity and culture of Da Nang, Hội An, and Mỹ Sơn were breathtaking. And living and filming in Hà Giang was spiritually moving.”

In another interview in April 2023 with Distractify , Tsuchida talked some more about filming in different parts of Vietnam. He stated, “Physically, it was like 90-degree weather all the time and 100% humidity, so it’s really hot and sweaty. With that said, working in Vietnam was an incredible experience. Because the Vietnamese people, the crew, government, the location, whatever, they were super enthused to have us there.” Moreover, many popular city streets were reportedly shut down during the production process, making the entire experience all the more smoother for the actors.

Where was A Tourist’s Guide to Love Filmed? Explained

where-was-a-tourists-guide-to-love-filmed

Where was A Tourist’s Guide to Love Filmed? We discuss the Netflix film and its many filming locations.

A Tourist Guide to Love is a Netflix romantic dramedy starring Rachel Leigh Cook , an executive producer on the film. Cook plays Amanda, a travel executive sent to vet a family-owned Vietnamese travel company called Saigon Silver Star.

When her boyfriend John puts their relationship on hold, she takes the assignment herself and travels to Vietnam undercover to evaluate the business from a customer perspective. Despite her strict work ethic, she finds herself drawn to the region’s beauty and the unconventional mindset of Sinh, the owner’s nephew (Scott Ly), who helps her when her luggage is lost.

This marks the first Netflix film shot in Vietnam. Screenwriter Eirene Tran Donohue’s script is based on her real-life experiences after a breakup on a five-week trip in Vietnam. She told Tudum, the official companion website to Netflix:

“On my last week in Vietnam, I met a Canadian backpacker who was very much a free spirit and very adventurous. It made me realize that I didn’t actually want a safe, predictable life. He was supposed to be my holiday fling, but we have been together ever since — 22 years.” — Tudum

Donohue also commented on the importance of filming in Vietnam:

“There are almost no American movies set in Vietnam that aren’t about the trauma of war. It was really important to me to tell a story about life now. One that was full of joy and love and celebration. I wanted to change the conversation about Vietnam, to highlight it as a modern, thriving country whose stories are worthy of being told.” — Tudum

Where was A Tourist’s Guide to Love filmed – a breakdown of filming locations

Hoi an, quang nam, vietnam.

Hoi An, Quang Nam, Vietnam, is an ancient riverside town in Vietnam. This is the setting where Cook’s Angela and Ly’s Sinh light a lantern. They then make a wish and release them into the river. (This can be found at the 37:10 mark).

Hoi An is located in the central area of Vietnam’s Quang Nam Province, at the mouth of the Thu Bon River. Home of the Hoi An Lantern Festival (also known as the entire moon festival) is held on the 14th day of the lunar month.

Da Nang, Vietnam

Da Nang is a famous beach area in Vietnam. This was the setting for the scene where Ly comes out of the water, and Cook’s character swims together. (The location can be found at the 39:10 mark of the movie).

The Vietnamese city is the fifth largest in the country, with just over one million people. The city is home to multiple World Heritage Sites. This includes the Imperial City of Hue and the Old Town of Hoi An, which fuels tourist activity in the region.

My Son Sanctuary, Quang Nam, Vietnam

The My Son Sanctuary is a cluster of abandoned Hindu Temples. The area was built between the fourth and fourteenth centuries under the Indianized kingdom of the Cham people. (At the 43:10 mark, Sinh takes the group to My Son instead of a Golden Bridge tour).

The World Heritage Center describes the sites as “A vivid picture of spiritual and political life in an important phase of the history of Southeast Asia. The monuments are unique and without equality in Southeast Asia.”

Ha Giang, Vietnam

The off-the-beaten-path of Ha Giang is a border town in Vietnam. Next to China, this is an official Frontier Area of the country. (You can experience the area with Sinh and Amanda when they visit his family at the 45:45 mark). The site has some of Vietnam’s most beautiful frontier landscapes and unique cultures.

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Formerly known as Saigon, Ho Chi Minh City is the largest city in Vietnam, with a population of almost ten million. Amanda can be seen at the 10-minute mark in the Tan Son Nhat International Airport and the Ben Thanh Market at the 21:10 mark.

According to IMDB, some of the movies shot in Ho Chi Minh City are The Lover (1992), Da 5 Bloods (2020), The Roundup (2022), Artemis Fowl (2020), and both versions of The Quiet American.

Where Was A Tourist's Guide To Love Actually Filmed?

Amanda Riley smiling

Netflix's new romantic comedy "A Tourist's Guide to Love" is a movie that just might have viewers checking their vacation calendars and bank accounts to fantasize about when they might escape to the film's colorfully exotic locations. Brimming with fast-paced, dazzling urban excitement juxtaposed with dreamily evocative rural vistas, the film is a visual feast as well as a whirlwind emotional journey.

The narrative centers on travel exec Amanda Riley, played by "She's All That" star Rachael Leigh Cook , who bails from a long-term relationship and heads off to Vietnam to heal her heart and explore the Southeast Asian nation's touristy side. But no sooner does she arrive in the country than she meets a fresh potential love interest Sinh (Scott Ly), the attractive and available local guy assigned to show her around.

As viewers likely won't be surprised to discover, the movie was filmed entirely on location in Vietnam. But the truth is, as Eirene Tran Donohue explained to Netflix Tudum , "There are almost no American movies that I can think of set in Vietnam that aren't about the trauma of war." That being the case, she said, she wanted to utilize on-location filming in Vietnam because, "It was really important to me to tell a story about life there now, one that was full of joy and love and celebration."

A Tourist's Guide to Love is also a love letter to Vietnam itself

As the film's title telegraphs, "A Tourist's Guide to Love" is primarily concerned with its lead character's romantic journey. But the film also serves up a wide-ranging exploration of Vietnam, from its bustling urban centers to its mist-shrouded countryside.

"As someone who had never been to Vietnam before this production, my fervent hope is that it's worth the watch just to get a sense of this incredible country," Rachael Leigh Cook told Netflix Tudum. The actress then went on to enumerate a mini-travel guide to the film's numerous shooting locations, saying, "We filmed in Ho Chi Minh City [formerly Saigon], Hoi An, Da Nang, Ha Giang and Hanoi." Cook then explained that the filming sites pictured in "A Tourist's Guide to Love" help to portray Vietnam's many and varied landscapes and cityscapes, all of which are different from each other in a number of ways.

Due to all of these factors, the movie acts as a cinematic tour of Vietnam. "Our goal, that I feel like our director Steven Tsuchida accomplished, is that you feel like you had a seat on the bus with us," Cook said.

'A Tourist's Guide to Love' Is a Love Letter to Vietnam — Inside the Beautiful Filming Locations (EXCLUSIVE)

Gabrielle Bernardini - Author

Apr. 20 2023, Published 4:50 p.m. ET

Following an emotional breakup with her longtime boyfriend, a travel executive ( Rachael Leigh Cook ) decides to throw herself into a new assignment and goes undercover as a tourist in Vietnam in the new Netflix rom-com, A Tourist's Guide to Love . But, the food and the beautiful sights aren't the only things Amanda Riley finds interesting on her foreign work-cation .

Amanda falls for her Vietnamese expat guide, Sinh Thach (Scott Ly), after he reroutes the usual tour and takes Amanda and the rest of the group "off the beaten path" so they can discover everything the beautiful Asian country has to offer.

In an exclusive interview with Distractify , director Steven K. Tsuchida spoke about the breathtaking filming locations, and how Vietnam becomes a central character in the movie.

'A Tourist's Guide to Love' filming locations — director on how Vietnam is a central "character" in the movie.

While the rom-com storyline may sound familiar, the unique lens of the movie taking place in Vietnam adds another layer to this journey and this particular romance, which is what makes this movie special, the director explained to us.

"To be able to showcase this sort of universal story told through this, I think, really sort of beautiful and unique place that is Vietnam [...] it's an opportunity to really show people like number one, the incredible cultural, and visual, and experiential nature of Vietnam that is just quite spectacular from a natural standpoint," he said. "And on the flip side, to really show the warmth, generosity, and then the variety that both the people and the culture sort of exude."

A Tourist's Guide to Love was filmed on location in Vietnam and gives viewers a glimpse at life in the major cities such as Ho Chi Minh City, as well as showcases the country's rural areas and villages.

Though the director emphasizes the beauty of Vietnam, shooting in a foreign country did come with a few challenges, specifically, the weather.

"Physically it was like 90-degree weather all the time and 100% humidity, so it's really hot and sweaty," he said. "With that said, working in Vietnam was an incredible experience," the director added. "Because the Vietnamese people, the crew, government, the location, whatever, they were super enthused to have us there."

The film's director told us that the people of Vietnam were "incredibly welcoming" to the cast and crew. During filming, popular city streets were shut down to accommodate the actors as they shot scenes.

Though the movie stars Rachael Leigh Cook and Scott Ly, Tsuchida feels that Vietnam is "a character [in and of] itself."

He continued, "I think one of the things that I really love about making movies like this and using a lot of the local talent is, I start watching the Western talent interact with, like, the local talent and [...] you actually realize as far away, as foreign as Vietnam is compared to Los Angeles, how [many] more similarities that we all have as human beings than differences."

You can stream A Tourist's Guide to Love on Netflix on April 21.

A typical rom-com that anyone might be looking for on a lazy Saturday, however, A Tourist’s Guide to Love certainly celebrates the country, showcasing multiple cities and landscapes as Amanda (played by She’s All That’s Rachael Leigh Cook) and her new friends discover the wonders of Vietnam. They find adventure and romance in markets, streets, temples, and ancient villages that actually were the set for some of the film’s most beautiful scenes.

As someone who had never been to Vietnam before this production, my fervent hope is that it’s worth the watch just to get a sense of this incredible country… We filmed in Ho Chi Minh City, Hoi An, Da Nang, Ha Giang and Hanoi, all of which are wildly different places in look, history and energy…

Cook tells Tudum of Netflix.

Viewers of A Tourist’s Guide to Love can find the film a slapstick comedy, fish-out-of-water gags, copious shopping montages, a secret to be revealed and a last-minute dash to say “I love you”, but this time they’re set against the backdrop of present-day Vietnam, which gives this artwork an unusual feeling of novelty. “A Tourist’s Guide to Love” is essentially a travelogue with a plot, and, somehow, a motivation for you to pack your suitcase and come to Vietnam, to explore, relax and play and all above, to live freely and fully in Vietnam.

We hope to see you in Vietnam, in person, really soon!

Now streaming on:

“A Tourist’s Guide to Love” is as harmless as its blandly forgettable title would suggest. It’s not quite a Movie to Fold Laundry To, because the scenery is quite lovely, so you’ll actually want to pay attention. But it is a pleasant escape if you’re seeking lazy Saturday afternoon viewing.

Rachael Leigh Cook brings her perky rom-com presence to this made-for-Netflix movie, which checks all the boxes you’d expect from such a slick and glossy example of the genre. Slapstick comedy, fish-out-of-water gags, wacky supporting characters, copious shopping montages, a love triangle, a secret to be revealed and a last-minute dash to say “I love you”—they’re all there, but this time they’re set against the backdrop of present-day Vietnam, which gives “A Tourist’s Guide to Love” an unusual feeling of novelty.

Director Steven K. Tsuchida , a TV veteran, was also behind 2021’s “ Resort to Love ,” another Netflix romantic comedy set in a picturesque vacation destination. This is pure formula, but the leads have such a sweet chemistry with each other, and the locations are so enticing, that you may as well just surrender.

Cook stars as Amanda Riley, an uptight, Los Angeles-based travel agent living a safe and predictable existence with her boring accountant boyfriend, John ( Ben Feldman ). Amanda’s boss (and apparently only friend), Mona ( Missi Pyle ), insists John is going to propose to her. Instead, he tells her he’s taking a job in Ohio and putting their relationship on hold. (Julia Shiplett makes the most of a brief supporting role as Amanda’s unimpressed manicurist.)

Stunned, Amanda agrees to Mona’s suggestion that she travel to Vietnam undercover to scope out a local tour company with the possibility of her firm buying it. This is also her chance to eat-pray-love her way out of heartache. Plus, she’ll be there for the annual Tet celebration, which just happens to be all about renewal. Would any of this actually happen in real life? No. Would a spoiled hotel heiress actually hit her head on a tree at a ski resort, suffer amnesia and fall for the hunky, widowed dad who owns a charming bed and breakfast? Probably not. We don’t watch these kinds of movies for realism.

And so Type-A Amanda becomes part of a tour group led by the handsome and soulful Sinh ( Scott Ly ) and his effervescent cousin, Anh (Quinn Truc Tran). Screenwriter Eirene Tran Donohue tries somewhat to flesh out the motley assemblage of fellow travelers, but she saddles them with awkward small talk, and no one is terribly interesting. The inordinately prepared Amanda insists on adhering to the itinerary because she wants to get the most out of her covert mission, but the easygoing Sinh takes a more spontaneous approach which—spoiler!—Amanda eventually learns to enjoy. Sinh also happens to have just the right profound thing to say for every occasion, which speaks to the flux in which Amanda finds herself. (Example: “A tourist wants to escape life. A traveler wants to experience it.”) Again, these are familiar types, but Cook’s likability softens her character’s pushy, impatient traits, and the charismatic Ly’s understated delivery makes Sinh’s platitudes less cheesy than they might sound.

Working with cinematographer Jon Keng and featuring plenty of shimmering aerial shots, Tsuchida makes every stop along the way seem vibrant and appealing, from the bustling streets of Ho Chi Minh City to the beaches of Da Nang to the verdant hills of Sinh’s home village. “Doing nothing feels very weird,” Amanda admits while lounging under an umbrella by the sea, and truer words were never spoken.

“A Tourist’s Guide to Love” is essentially a travelogue with a plot, but you might actually find yourself caring about whether these two attractive-but-extremely-different people end up falling for each other in the end.

On Netflix now.

TRAVEL GUIDE: Where to go in Hong Kong if you want to relive KathDen's 'Hello, Love, Goodbye' moments

By Yoniel Acebuche Published Jun 20, 2024 2:13 pm

Kathryn Bernardo and Alden Richards ' unforgettable portrayal of Joy Fabregas and Ethan Del Rosario's bittersweet romance continues to capture our hearts. But fans would be excited to know that their love story will unfold with an upcoming sequel.

In case you didn't know, Kathryn and Alden, dubbed KathDen, will return as on-screen partners in Hello, Love, Again , the sequel to the blockbuster 2019 film Hello, Love, Goodbye. The film is set to be released in the Philippine cinemas on November 13.

While its 2019 film catered to a star-studded cast, witty banter, and reel-to-real-life narratives that draw us in, the film also fuels our wanderlust with dreamy scenes of Hong Kong.

From the Avenue of Stars to the Instagramable areas in Central, discover the places that witnessed the love story of Joy and Ethan below.

Avenue of Stars

a tourist guide to love filming locations

First on the list is the famous Avenue of Stars, which celebrates the city's artistic offerings and elemental aesthetics. According to the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB), it was originally modeled after Hollywood's Walk of Fame.

Located along the Victoria Harbour waterfront in Tsim Sha Tsui , the place features the country's biggest entertainment stars immortalized via handprints and statues.

This is a pivotal location for Ethan and Joy. Here, their feelings for each other blossom as Ethan helps Joy with her side hustle. It's also where Joy gets a glimmer of hope, realizing she almost has enough money to pay for her work permits in Canada.

Aqua Luna: Evening Harbour Cruise

Another way to explore Hong Kong's picturesque skyline and relive some scenes from the film is through Aqua Luna: Evening Harbour Cruise.

In this 1,500-square-foot cabin, tourists can enjoy the view while indulging in cocktails and snacks.

In the film, Aqua Luna is one of the places Ethan and Joy visit before the latter goes to Canada. Here, they recreated Jack and Rose's famous Titanic pose.

Pro tip: For a more romantic experience, visit at night. You'll get to enjoy the cruise's aesthetic lights, the city's vibrant lights, and the relaxing sea breeze. Plus, there's a light show held every day from 8:00 p.m. for 13 minutes.

Central Pier, Victoria Harbour

Meanwhile, Central Pier number 9 witnessed all of the highlights of Ethan and Joy's love story.

Among the ten central piers in Hong Kong, Central Piers No. 9 and No. 10 are less crowded than the others. From here, you will get a magnificent view of Harbour City, with its breathtaking waterfront and skyscrapers.

For Joy and Ethan, who struggled with their personal lives and love story, this Victoria Harbor viewing deck, which overlooks the Kowloon side of the island, has become a regular hangout place. It is also where they initially converse as strangers at the beginning and, in the latter part, when they finally come to grips with their connection and relationship.

A familiar sight in Central on Sundays is overseas Filipino workers enjoying their day off. This location was used to film several sequences for Hello, Love, Goodbye , including one in which Joy is seen forming bonds with her fellow Pinoy friends and doing side projects to support her family.

Ethan used any excuse to visit Joy in Mong Kok, buying things from Joy's stall just to be near her.

As the movie goes on, Ethan becomes her apprentice, selling random things so that she can earn money for a Canadian Visa.

More than anything else, Mong Kok, which was described as the busiest district in the world by the Guinness World Records, is a bustling district with winding alleyways that is popular with tourists for its shopping. It features kiosks of clothing and trinkets from the Ladies' Market, and shoes from Sneaker Street, among others.

Joy finds herself short on funds after negotiating the remaining terms of her contract with her present employer. She takes a side job as a waitress in the heart of Hong Kong's nightlife, Lan Kwai Fong, but l ittle does she know, this chance encounter with the bustling bar scene will lead to a near brush with the law and, more surprisingly, the beginning of her love story with Ethan.

According to HKTB, over 90 restaurants and bars are located in Lan Kwai Fong , one of Hong Kong's most well-liked nightlife hotspots. The cuisine selection reflects the diversity of the patrons, with events ranging from sophisticated wine pairings to wild jelly shots.

Tracing The Notebook through Charleston: The South Carolina filming locations you can still visit

W alking through the cobbled streets of Charleston on a summer’s night as a warm breeze gently sways palm trees against a midnight sky, it’s easy to see how this city became home to one of Hollywood ’s greatest love stories.

Two decades ago, film producers came to South Carolina to scout locations for a new film based on the novel The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks. With its historic mansions, beautifully preserved architecture and horse-drawn carriages slowly clopping through the city streets, they fell for Charleston and settled on it as the setting for the fictional town of Seabrook, South Carolina, where the majority of Allie and Noah’s love story takes place (although the novel itself was actually set in the real town of New Bern, North Carolina).

The film debuted on 25 June 2004, propelling Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams to stardom and cementing itself as a cultural touchstone in the public consciousness.

Charleston’s history is not without controversy – the city was once the slave trade capital of North America , acting as a key port for the movement of enslaved people from west Africa . But the city has taken strides to face up to its troubled past – the excellent International African American Museum helps to tell the story – and has grown into one of the most popular tourst destinations in the south of the USA , with charming hotels, a thriving restaurant scene and rows of boutique stores.

And fans of The Notebook can experience all this while visiting locations that, 20 years on, are still easily recognisable from the movie. These are the 12 that are worth a look both in and ariound the city – some are private residences and you won’t be able to enter, while others welcome visitors and have fully embraced their Notebook fame.

The Admiral’s House (and the Old Navy Base)

Address: 1100 Navy Way, North Charleston

Built in 1905, the Admiral’s House was used for several interior shots of The Notebook , including the scene where Allie paints on the balcony – it’s the “white house with blue shutters and a room overlooking the river” and the “big old porch that wraps around the entire house” of her dreams. Downstairs, the blue room was used for a scene in the old people’s home where the Noah tells his wife their story. The interior of a nearby desanctified chapel went through several set transformations to serve as the backdrop for multiple scenes as well.

Just a 20-minute drive from Charleston, the Admiral’s House sits at the Old Naval Base – the area was where some of the (behind-the-scenes) production offices were located. The house itself is picture-perfect South Carolina, with weeping willows surrounding the property. It’s now used for weddings and corporate events, and can be booked for overnight stays as part of these packages.

Boone Hall Plantation

Address: 1235 Long Point Road, Charleston

Exterior shots of Allie’s family’s summer house were filmed at the Boone Hall Plantation and Gardens in Mount Pleasant, which is around 25 minutes’ drive from downtown Charleston. Photography and video recording isn’t allowed inside the house, so production used a second location (the Williams Mansion) to film indoor scenes.

Fans will recognise the gates that Noah skids and crashes into when arriving at the house (a fun fact is that this wasn’t planned – Ryan Gosling simply didn’t brake on time), and the front porch that Allie runs up. The creek behind the house was used for the famous lake scene where Noah jumps in the water.

The plantation is popular tourist destination, but has come under scrutiny in the past for holding weddings – Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively were criticised for marrying at the location without recognition of its troubled history. There are nine 18th-century slave dwellings on the property, and Boone Hall now holds educational programmes where visitors can learn about the history of the estate.

Cypress Gardens

Address: 3030 Cypress Gardens Road, Charleston

Cypress Gardens are a 40-minute drive out of the city, but it’s worth making the trip and taking a boat out through the man-made swamp that’s lined with cypress trees – just like Noah and Allie did in The Notebook ’s famous boat scene.

As you glide through the water that’s criss-crossed by pretty white bridges, you’ll spot herons, yellow sliders, egrets, turtles, wood ducks and osprey – and even some alligators. You can also take a stroll along the trails that surround the swamp.

Although the lake that Allie and Noah row through through is filled with swans, these birds are actually not native to the area – filmmakers bought the ones seen in the movie as chicks and then raised them on a nearby lake in a playpen so that they would get used to the location before using them in filming.

Martins Point Plantation

Private residence, Wadmalaw Island

Although this is a private residence and visitors cannot enter, it’s on our list as it’s the location of the house Noah built Allie – so worth a mention. Rumour has it that Ryan Gosling wanted Noah to burn the house down after completing its renovations.

The American Theater

446 King Street, Charleston

Opened in 1942, the wonderfully retro American Theater Scene was the setting for Noah and Allie’s first date. Although it no longer shows movies, its beautifully preserved Art Deco charm both inside and out is used as a venue for events, including weddings, dinner receptions and corporate retreats. The board outside that once showed screenings now displays mssages – in fact, it’s become very popular for marriage proposals. Although you’ll need to be part of a planned event to enter the building, its exterior is a must-see when strolling around Charleston.

High Cotton

Address: 199 East Bay Street, Charleston

Noah and Allie’s love story takes a turn after Allie goes to college and meets Lon (played by James Marsden) and the couple become engaged. At the High Cotton restaurant in Charleston Noah spots Allie greeting her fiancé through the restaurant’s window.

You can still eat at the restaurant on East Bay Street in downtown Charleston where you’ll be served traditional low country fare on white tablecloths against a backdrop of exposed brick and heart pine floors. Interestingly, a manager of neighbouring restaurant Slightly North of Broad was cast as the maitre d’ in this Notebook scene.

Old Village

Address: Old Village Drive, Mount Pleasant

The charming Old Village in Mount Pleasant sets the scene for parts of Seabrook. Fans will recognise Pitt Street Pharmacy as the place where Noah and Allie go on an ice cream date – you can still go into the delightfully old-fashioned store now for a scoop or two.

Just 15 minutes drive across the bridge from downtoen Charleston, Mount Pleasant is well-worth a visit. It’s smaller and more laid-back than its neighbour, but you could easily send a day exploring the beaches, restaurants and shops. Old Village itself is particularly quaint with historic homes, cute little inns and boutique stores.

Williams Mansion (formerly Calhoun Mansion)

Address: 16 Meeting Street, Charleston

As mentioned, the Williams Mansion was used for indoor shots of the Hamiltons’ (Allie’s family) summer house. Built in 1876, the house has served as a private residence, a hotel, a filming site, and a tourist attraction. Although currently closed to tourists, it should be open for visitors later this summer.

William Aiken House

456 King Street, Charleston

Engaged to another man and trying on her wedding dress, Allie is in William Aiken House right in the centre of downtown Charleston – just steps away from the America Theater – when she sees Noah in the newspaper and faints. William Aiken House, built in the 19th century, still looks very much the same now as it did in the movie, filled with artwork and antiques, and with an elegant wraparound balcony.

Nowadays, the house is a popular wedding venue, with a large courtyard and a two-century-old magnolia tree sitting outside. Tourists can view the house from the street, but will need to be part of an organised event to be invited inside.

Black River Plantation

Address: Georgetown

Another private residence, so not one you can actually enter, Black River Plantation was Allie’s nursing home. In the past it has held various names such as Rice Hope Plantation and Waddell Ranch, and was at one time the International Paper Company House.

King Street

Address: Charleston

The joyful scene in which Noah and Allie dance and lie together in the road after their first date was shot at King Street. A temporary stoplight, as well as vintage parking meters and window signs were set up during the filming.

Now it’s a relatively busy intersection – so don’t be tempted to recreate the scene – and it’s just a short walk from the William Aiken House and American Theater, so you can combine all three locations on a stroll downtown.

College of Charleston

66 George Street, Charleston

In the film Allie went to college at Sarah Lawrence in New York , but the producers decided to utilise the Charleston-based college to stay local, and used it for scenes when she was studying. It’s worth taking a wander through the campus, which was founded in 1770 and is the 13th-oldest university in the US.

Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton Will Return for More Bridgerton

Season four will hopefully feature Penelope and Colin's happily ever after.

"I'm excited for the happily ever after and to see what that brings," Newton tells Town & Country about the future plot for Colin and Penelope. "I have so much trust in Jess [Brownell, the showrunner] that it will always be interesting and always be exciting. That's also the joy of being in the Bridgeton family: There's always going to be drama. There's always going to be something I get to help out with or causing mischief or whatever it is."

luke newton nicola coughlan

Newton continues, "There is a little moment in the show where Colin is just happy and content and feels really good—he's like this bumbling, giggling idiot. It is really fun if we get to play that next year. Nic and I have talked about how fun that'll be, just to play that."

He also hopes that Colin and Penelope's storyline will "lean into the comedy."

"Nicola is known for her comedy and being an indie actress, and she came to see my play that I did last year [ The Shape of Things ], which was a dark comedy. And she said in that moment, 'We can do all of that stuff. We can do all those comic moments in the future of Bridgerton .' Maybe we'll be a comedy duo for season four."

luke newton nicola coughlan

When Coughlan thinks about the future Bridgerton seasons, she looks forward to continuing to work with Newton. "I love filming one-on-one scenes with him," she tells T&C . "I'm not great in huge crowd. I've really adored filming the silly moments together—that's when I love them as a couple."

She adds, "There's a line in season three where Penelope teases Colin. She's like, 'Were you ever punished as a child?' Even in season one, when they are at the ball and they're standing at the edge and she's making fun of this guy and he finds it really funny. That kind of stuff, I just completely adore."

She also sees the "comedy potential" in scenes featuring not only Colin and Penelope, but also Eloise. "I hope that's something. I haven't seen anything! I have no idea what season four is going to be about, but that would be very fun to do."

Most Beautiful Metro Stations in Moscow

Most Beautiful Metro Stations in Moscow

Visiting Moscow? Get yourself a metro card and explore Moscow’s beautiful metro stations. Moscow’s world-famous metro system is efficient and a great way to get from A to B. But there is more to it; Soviet mosaic decorations, exuberant halls with chandeliers, colourful paintings and immense statues. Moscow’s metro is an attraction itself, so take half a day and dive into Moscow’s underground!

The best thing to do is to get on the brown circle (number 5) line since the most beautiful metro stations are situated on this line. The only exception is the metro stop Mayakovskaya one the green line (number 2). My suggestion is to get a map, mark these metro stops on there and hop on the metro. It helps to get an English > Russian map to better understand the names of the stops. At some of the metro stops, the microphone voice speaks Russian and English so it’s not difficult at all.

Another thing we found out, is that it’s worth taking the escalator and explore the other corridors to discover how beautiful the full station is.

Quick hotel suggestion for Moscow is the amazing Brick Design Hotel .

These are my favourite metro stations in Moscow, in order of my personal preference:

1. Mayakovskaya Station

The metro station of Mayakovskaya looks like a ballroom! Wide arches, huge domes with lamps and mosaic works make your exit of the metro overwhelming. Look up and you will see the many colourful mosaics with typical Soviet pictures. Mayakovskaya is my personal favourite and is the only stop not on the brown line but on the green line.

2. Komsomolskaya Station

Komsomolskaya metro station is famous for its yellow ceiling. An average museum is nothing compared to this stop. Splendour all over the place, black and gold, mosaic – again – and enormous chandeliers that made my lamp at home look like a toy.

3. Novoslobodskaya Station

The pillars in the main hall of Novoslobodskaya metro station have the most colourful stained glass decorations. The golden arches and the golden mosaic with a naked lady holding a baby in front of the Soviet hammer and sickle, make the drama complete.

4. Prospect Mira Station

The beautiful chandeliers and the lines in the ceiling, make Prospekt Mira an architectural masterpiece.

5. Belorusskaya Station

Prestigious arches, octagonal shapes of Socialistic Soviet Republic mosaics. The eyecatcher of Belorusskaya metro station, however, is the enormous statue of three men with long coats, holding guns and a flag.

6. Kiyevskaya Station

The metro station of Kiyevskaya is a bit more romantic than Belorusskaya and Prospect Mira. Beautiful paintings with classical decorations.

7. Taganskaya Station

At the main hall Taganskaya metro station you will find triangle light blue and white decorations that are an ode to various Russians that – I assume – are important for Russian history and victory. There is no need to explore others halls of Taganskaya, this is it.

8. Paveletskaya Station

Another and most definitely the less beautiful outrageous huge golden mosaic covers one of the walls of Paveletskaya. I would recommend taking the escalator to the exit upstairs to admire the turquoise dome and a painting of the St Basil’s Cathedral in a wooden frame.

It’s absolutely beautiful! Moscow is a great city trip destination and really surprised me in many ways.

My partner and I did a self guided Moscow Metro tour when we were there 2 years ago. So many breathtaking platforms…I highly recommend it! Most of my favorites were along the Brown 5 line, as well. I also loved Mayakovskaya, Arbatskaya, Aleksandrovski Sad and Ploshchad Revolyutsii. We’re heading back in a few weeks and plan to do Metro Tour-Part 2. We hope to see the #5 stations we missed before, as well as explore some of the Dark Blue #3 (Park Pobedy and Slavyansky Bul’var, for sure), Yellow #8 and Olive #10 platforms.

That’s exciting Julia! Curious to see your Metro Tour-Part 2 experience and the stations you discovered.

17. Tsaritsyno Palace

Tsaritsyno Palace

Once the summer residence of Catherine the Great, the stunning Tsaritsyno Palace is now a museum-reserve. The architecture is magnificent and there is a lovely park surrounding it for visitors to explore.

Located in the south of Moscow, the palace was commissioned in 1775 and recent renovations mean its lavish interior looks better than ever before with its elegant halls and beautiful staircases.

The exhibits on display look at the life of the empress as well as the history of Tsaritsyno itself. The huge palace grounds are also home to some other delightful buildings with the elegant opera house and wonderful brickwork of the Small Palace being particularly impressive to gaze upon.

VDNKh

Starting out in 1935 as the ‘All-Union Agricultural Exhibition’, VDNKh has slowly morphed over the years into the fascinating open-air museum of today. Remarkably, over 400 buildings can now be found within its confines.

The huge park complex has numerous pavilions representing former Soviet republics on show, such as those of Armenia and Turkmenistan and the distinctive architecture of each of the buildings is always interesting to gaze upon. In addition to this there is the fascinating Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics which is dedicated to space exploration and the fun Moskvarium aquarium even offers you the chance to swim with dolphins.

With lots of eateries scattered about and numerous entertainment options such as horse-riding and zip-lining, there is something for everyone to enjoy; the Friendship of Nations fountain truly is wonderful.

15. Kremlin Armoury

Kremlin Armoury

One of the oldest museums in the city, the Kremlin Armoury has a wealth of treasures; highlights include the ornate Grand Siberian Railway egg, the historic Cap of Monomakh and the stunning Imperial Crown of Russia which often has a crowd of tourists around it, jostling to take a photo.

Once the royal armory, there are loads of fascinating objects on display. Perusing the many sabers, jewelry, armor and more is as interesting as it is educational and entertaining and the swords are so finely crafted that you’ll almost wish you could pick up one and wield if yourself.

Established in 1851, the museum is situated in the Moscow Kremlin.

14. GUM Department Store

GUM Department Store

Standing for ‘Main Universal Store’ in Russian, GUM is stunning. Its wonderful skylights and beautiful facades mean it doesn’t look out of place alongside its illustrious neighbors on Red Square.

With over 200 shops, boutiques and upmarket eateries inside, it is a shopaholic’s heaven and concerned partners will be glad to find more affordable options alongside luxury brands such as Dior and Prada.

The main department store in the city, GUM was opened in 1893. The stunning architecture makes it well worth a visit even if shopping isn’t your thing.

13. Moscow Metro

Moscow Metro

It’s not often that public transport looks like a work of art. So many stops on the Moscow Metro will astound visitors with their beauty and elegance.

Decked in marble and with frescoes covering the walls, the stations are amazing to gaze upon and are part of one of the longest metro systems in the world, with the first stations opened in 1935.

Using the metro is the quickest and easiest way to get around Moscow and braving the crowds of commuters is well worth it for the beauty all around you.

12. Arbat Street

Arbat Street

An elegant yet lively street, Arbat is full of impressive architecture and was once a popular place to live for aristocrats, artists, and academics.

A historic place, it is down Arbat Street that Napoleon’s troops are said to have headed on their way to capture the Kremlin.

Nowadays, there are many cafes, restaurants, and shops, as well as various monuments and statues to former residents such as Alexander Pushkin who was reputed to be a lover of the Russian Empress due to his massive influence in court.

11. Novodevichy Convent

Novodevichy Convent

Drenched in history, the Novodevichy Convent is located in a striking building that was once a fortress. This captivating place is well worth visiting when in Moscow.

Founded in 1524, the convent houses four cathedrals; Smolensk Cathedral is the undoubted highlight due to its delightful 16th-century frescoes.

Wandering around the grounds is like stepping back in time. The Novodevichy Cemetery is where many famous leaders of the Soviet Union are buried, such as Yeltsin and Khrushchev.

10. Pushkin Museum

Pushkin Museum

Despite its name, the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts actually has no connection at all to the famous poet other than that it was named in his honor after his death. A delight to visit, its extensive collection focuses on European art with masterpieces by Botticelli, Rembrandt, and van Gogh all featuring.

Sculptures, graphic art, paintings and more can be found in its beautiful galleries; various sections look at themes and epochs such as the Renaissance, the Dutch Golden Age, and Byzantine art.

Among the many highlights are the clownish characters which can be found in Cezanne’s Fastnacht (Mardi Gras) and the twirling ballerinas who look so elegant in Degas’ Blue Dancers. Picasso’s Young acrobat on a Ball is also well worth checking out for its interesting use of shapes and colors.

9. Christ The Savior Cathedral

Christ The Savior Cathedral

This gorgeous Russian Orthodox cathedral is located on the banks of the Moskva River, just a stone’s throw away from the Kremlin.

The church as it stands today was consecrated in 2000, as the original church that stood here was destroyed on the command of Josef Stalin in 1931 due to the anti-religious campaign.

With its delightful golden dome, spires and dazzling white facades, the Christ the Savior Cathedral is stunning. The interior is just as captivating to wander around, with its beautifully tiled floors and impressive altar.

8. Lenin Mausoleum

Lenin Mausoleum

Opened to the public in 1924, Lenin’s Mausoleum is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Moscow. The red granite structure is located at the heart of the city in Red Square.

Lenin’s embalmed body lies in a glass sarcophagus; it is a somewhat eerie experience walking past the former leader of the Soviet Union but is well worth doing as you understandably can’t do it anywhere else in the world.

After visiting the mausoleum, head to the Kremlin wall right next to it for more graves of important communist figures such as Stalin and Brezhnev.

7. Tretyakov Gallery

Tretyakov Gallery

Home to the most extensive and impressive collection of Russian fine art in the world, the State Tretyakov Gallery is definitely worth visiting when in Moscow for the wealth of amazing art pieces that it has on display.

Having started out as the private art collection of the Tretyakov brothers, there are now over 130,000 exhibits. Highlights include the iconic Theotokos of Vladimir which you will almost certainly recognise despite probably not knowing the name and Rublev’s Trinity which is considered to be one of highest achievements in Russian art.

An absolute must for art lovers, the State Tretyakov Gallery will delight visitors with all that is has to offer.

6. Kolomenskoye

Kolomenskoye

Once a royal estate, Kolomenskoye is now a museum-reserve and lies a few kilometers outside of the city center. A captivating place to visit, there is a plethora of history on show and the site overlooks the Moskva River.

Consisting of four historical sites, there are extensive gardens for visitors to explore, as well as loads of interesting old buildings, the former village of Kolomenskoye itself and the impressive Palace of the Tsar Alexey Mikhailovich – once considered the Eighth Wonder of the World by contemporaries.

Among the many stunning sights, it is the brilliantly white Ascension Church that is the undoubted highlight – dating back to 1532.

5. Gorky Park

Gorky Park

Lying alongside the Moskva River, the huge Gorky Park is a lovely place to visit. Its extensive gardens are home to numerous cultural institutions and visitors should definitely check out the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art and while the eclectic exhibits may not always feature such incredible sights as a balloon-covered rider on a zebra; they certainly always succeed in pushing back the boundaries of art.

Pop-up exhibitions and festivals can be found from time to time in the park itself and there is an open-air theatre and numerous eateries alongside a plethora of leisure activities.

Whether it’s cycling, table tennis or yoga that you are after or beach volleyball and rowing, Gorky Park certainly has it. In winter, there is a huge ice rink for visitors to enjoy.

4. Bolshoi Theatre

Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi Theatre is the main theater in the country. The amazing opera and ballet performances it has put on over the centuries go a long way in explaining Russia’s rich history of performing arts.

While the Bolshoi Ballet Company was established in 1776, the theater itself was opened in 1825. The glittering, six-tier auditorium is lavishly and decadently decorated; it is a fitting setting for the world-class performances that take place on its stage.

Spending a night watching a performance of such classics as The Nutcracker or Swan Lake at the Bolshoi Theatre is sure to be a memorable experience and the beauty all around you only adds to the sense of occasion.

3. Moscow Kremlin

Moscow Kremlin

This famously fortified complex is remarkably home to five palaces and four cathedrals and is the historic, political and spiritual center of the city. The Kremlin serves as the residence for the country’s president. It has been used as a fort, and this fact is made clear by its sheer size. The Kremlin’s outer walls were built in the late 1400s.

Under Ivan III, better known as Ivan the Great, the Kremlin became the center of a unified Russian state, and was extensively remodeled. Three of the Kremlin’s cathedrals date to his reign that lasted from 1462-1505. The Deposition Church and the Palace of Facets were also constructed during this time. The Ivan the Great Bell Tower was built in 1508. It is the tallest tower at the Kremlin with a height of 266 feet (81 meters).

Joseph Stalin removed many of the relics from the tsarist regimes. However, the Tsar Bell, the world’s largest bell, and the Tsar Cannon, the largest bombard by caliber in the world, are among the remaining items from that era. The Kremlin Armory is one of Moscow’s oldest museums as it was established more than 200 years ago. Its diamond collection is impressive.

The Kremlin’s gardens – Taynitsky, Grand Kremlin Public and Alexander – are beautiful. The Kremlin has also served as the religious center of the country, and there is a tremendous number of preserved churches and cathedrals here. The collections contained within the museums include more than 60,000 historical, cultural and artistic monuments. Those who enjoy the performing arts will want to consider attending a ballet or concert at the State Kremlin Palace. Completed in 1961, it is the only modern building in the Kremlin.

2. Red Square

Red Square

Lying at the heart of Moscow, Red Square is the most important and impressive square in the city. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions due to its wealth of historical sights and cultural landmarks.

Drenched in history, the huge square is home to incredible sights such as the Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral and Lenin’s Mausoleum, among others. Consequently, it is not to be missed when in Moscow as it really is home to the city’s most stunning monuments.

It is here that many important moments in Russian history took place; the former marketplace has hosted everything from Tsar’s coronations and public ceremonies to rock concerts and Soviet military parades. Wandering around the massive square is a humbling experience and undoubtedly one of the highlights the city has to offer.

1. Saint Basil’s Cathedral

Saint Basil's Cathedral

Located in the impressive Red Square, St. Basil’s Cathedral is gorgeous; its delightful spires appear as if out of a fairytale. The most recognizable building in the country, the cathedral is very much a symbol of Russia. No visit to Moscow is complete without having taken in its unique and distinctive features.

Ivan the Terrible ordered the cathedral’s construction in the mid-16th century, and legend holds that Ivan put out the architect’s eyes so that he would be unable to build another cathedral more glorious than St. Basil’s. Designed to resemble the shape of a bonfire in full flame, the architecture is not only unique to the period in which it was built but to any subsequent period. For various reasons, both Napoleon and Stalin wanted to destroy the cathedral but fortunately did not succeed.

Known for its various colors, shapes and geometric patterns, St. Basil’s Cathedral houses nine different chapels that are all connected by a winding labyrinth of corridors and stairways. On the lower floor, St. Basil’s Chapel contains a silver casket bearing the body of St. Basil the Blessed.

Throughout the cathedral are many beautiful murals, frescoes, wooden icons and other art works and artifacts. Outside the cathedral is a lovely garden with the bronze Monument to Minin and Pozharsky, who rallied an all-volunteer Russian army against Polish invaders during a period of the late 16th century known as the Times of Troubles.
