In 1977 Christopher Wood left university teaching to inaugurate Australians Studying Abroad (ASA) because he wanted to take learning from the classroom into the world. Chris began leading small groups of university students to Europe during the holidays in order to enhance their campus studies. In the 1980s ASA’s offerings grew to include educational tours for the general public, and ASA exploded as a major public education organisation in the 1990s. In Australia and America, meanwhile, Chris pioneered the much-used current phrase ‘cultural tourism’ long before others understood what it truly meant.

All ASA tours reflect a belief that learning is as much an act of imagination and experience as a garnering of information, based on the assumption that an intimate relationship exists between geography, history and culture. Our tours aim to give you unique insights into different cultural traditions by travelling to the places where each tradition evolved, and tracing how climate, geography, demography and politics interact to create specific types of art and culture. The physical experience of different landscapes, environments and communities that generate myriad colours, sounds and scents is the first step to understanding different cultures and enjoying these diverse places.

Many years on, ASA is no longer a one-man show. It now employs 12 permanent staff and a collective of consultants and local contributors in some 45 countries around the world, including an ever growing team of dedicated and experienced group leaders and lecturers, including international experts who interact with, educate and help ASA travellers to interpret the cities, monuments and landscapes through which they pass and the customs, rituals and performances they witness on their journeys of discovery.

We, therefore, strive on a daily basis to make each tour a better experience for our ASA travelling community by enhancing the programs with local hosts who provide inimitable insights into their regions and particular aspects of their landscapes and cultures. There is great excitement in the office when we receive emails confirming special events or access to private sites like exclusive musical performances, receptions in private villas or palaces, or visits to international artists, gardeners and designers who give generously of their time to welcome our groups not only to their projects but to their private studios and homes.

ASA programs relate very particular experiences of places, many of them not available to other travellers, to a broad vision of the world, by exploring the layers of history and the stories each has to tell. By unravelling the full tale of a place from the specific to the broader context, ASA tours show you the trees and the wood.

ASA Open-Age tours

ASA offers around 30-40 journeys each year to some 45 countries around the world. There is an average of 16-17 participants (and a maximum of 26) on any trip. A number of our tours, particularly our city-based tours, are limited to a maximum of 20 participants. ASA welcomes travellers from other countries. We already have regular travellers from New Zealand, Canada, Britain and the USA.

University Credit Courses and School Overseas Study Programs

We also organize study tours on behalf of institutions including the University of Melbourne, Monash University, La Trobe University and St Catherines Girls School.

Well-Researched, carefully crafted itineraries

True to ASA’s pioneering role in the development of cultural tours, great thought and energy go into carefully researching our itineraries. These are always designed and developed in-house. Research begins with isolating a number of important themes to guide our teaching program. These are then taken into account when choosing guest lecturers, selecting site visits that tease out the themes, with special attention to privileged access to places that would not be available to most travellers. We also look for distinctive accommodation, interesting performances, and any fascinating festivals in the countries we visit. We prepare pre-tour resources, including reading material, and also research and write special handbooks for many tours, or find the most appropriate books to send to participants.

Special Events and privileged access to people and places

ASA’s careful research and accumulated expertise offer you privileged access to places and experiences that are not available to most tourists. Tours often include visits to private palaces, villas, country houses and gardens hosted by their owners. They may include special ‘behind the scenes’ or ‘out-of-hours’ visits to famous museums and monuments that are usually packed during conventional visiting hours. We also have a huge network of local experts who have become ‘friends of ASA’. Many are leaders in their field, like Eduardo Mencos, Spain’s most famous avant-garde gardener and garden writer.

Experienced, engaging, enthusiastic tour lecturers

ASA tour lecturers are noted not only for their broad knowledge and the expertise they bring to their tours, but also for their articulate, enthusiastic commitment to ASA’s focus upon meaningful and enjoyable ‘on the spot’ learning. Our lecturers give comprehensive background talks and on-site commentaries in concert with international experts and local guides. Many of our lecturers have been leading tours from 10 to 30 years and over 38 years ASA has been privileged to work with some 500 local and international experts who are world leaders in their fields.

How our education programs work

Each tour demands a distinctive education program. On a number of tours your tour lecturer, or a local or international guest speaker, will give special illustrated talks in your hotel before or after a day’s activities. These are supplemented or substituted by general talks or site briefings on your coach; these coach talks are especially important if an itinerary does not allow time for hotel lectures. We place special emphasis upon informed on-sight commentary, which links the general themes of the tour and hotel talks to what you actually see. Where available we use ‘whisperers’, individual units with earplugs that allow you to listen to the on-site commentary but also give you freedom to explore for yourself. These ‘whisperers’ are excellent when we are in a crowded site or if you are a little hard of hearing; ASA group members swear by them!

Educational and Practical Information

ASA is renowned for the wealth of educational and practical information published for tours. Handbooks and site notes written exclusively for ASA by experts often support a tour. Other tours are supported by compilations of important articles providing in-depth information. In some cases, we choose the most apposite reference books available, which you receive prior to departure. We also produce pre-tour reading lists and detailed practical information.

Accommodation

We take great care in selecting your accommodation. We prefer hotels in a very central location in walking distance to sites of interest and restaurants. Where possible we select hotels that complement the theme of each tour (including heritage hotels, boutique hotels with historical charm or ‘design’ themes). Examples include the famous Parador of Santiago de Compostela and the extraordinary London hotel designed by Philippe Starck.

Limited hotel changes

Wherever possible, tours hinge on a limited number of ‘hubs’ from which we make day trips. This means less moves and therefore less packing and un-packing and more time to achieve practical chores. It also allows you time to explore a place better, and enjoy personal interests, such as attending theatre and music performances.

Diverse culinary experiences

The full experience of a place involves all the senses: of sight, sound, fragrance, feel and taste. Our detailed research team enjoys finding interesting ways to enhance your culinary delights. These may include Michelin star restaurants, or establishments that are famous for their local cuisine, their design, and/or associations with famous people and events. On a range of tours you will enjoy visits to distinctive wineries or even foraging in local markets for a group picnic lunch.

Leisure time

All tours are planned to include leisure time. The amount of time varies from tour to tour, from half days at leisure to days that finish early. Leisure time occurs on days when interesting sites like museums are open or offers visits to markets and souqs that lend themselves to individual exploration, or you may just want to sit in a café and ‘people watch’.

DAY 1 – SINGAPORE – ROME

Assemble at Singapore Changi Airport and begin your holiday with a pleasant flight to Rome, Italy.

DAY 2 – ROME

Upon arrival, proceed for Rome sightseeing tour which will include the St Peter’s Basilca, an Italian Renaissance Church in Vatican City. Continue to the Colosseum for a photo stop, it is an oval amphitheatre in the centre of the city of Rome. Built of concrete and sand, it is also the largest amphitheatre ever built and it was also used for Gladiatorial contest during the ancient time. Photo stop at the Fountain of Trevi, designed by Italian architect Nicola Salvi and completed by Pietro Bracci. With a standing height of 26.3 metres high and 49.15 metres wide, it is the largest Baroque fountain in the city and one of the most famous fountains in the world.

DAY 3 – ROME – PISA – FLORENCE – TUSCANY REGION

After breakfast, we travel to Pisa to visit the Square of Miracles, where you can have a stunning view of the Leaning tower of Pisa. Continue our journey to Florence, Tuscany region capital. Begin our tour with admire white marble Duomo (Cathedral) Santa Maria and Gates of Paradise (Golden Gates). Continue the walking tour to Piazza Signoria (open air-museum) to view the statue of David. Next, we walk along the Arno River to enjoy the wonderful view of Florence.

DAY 4 – TUSCANY REGION – VENICE

Today, we make our journey to the romantic city of Venice, enjoy cruise ride on a private boat that will sail pass 13th Century Palaces to St Mark’s Square. Disembark and view Doge’s Palace,built in Venetian Gothic style and is one of the main landmarks of the city of Venice. The palace was the residence of the Doge of Venice, the supreme authority of the former Republic of Venice and it is connected to the prisons by the Bridge of Sighs. It was from here that Casanova made his daring escape. Conclude our day with a visit to the Venetian Glassblowing Factory. Overnight in Veneto region.

DAY 5 – VENICE – MILAN – LUCERNE

Embark Sightseeing tour of Milan and take a sights Gothic Duomo – second largest church in Italy. Walk thru the 19th century Victor Emmanuele II Galleria and famous Piazza Del Duomo .Free at leisure at your own exploration and shopping at one of the world’s first shopping malls. Drive through the scenic countryside to Lucerne, one of Switzerland’s most beautiful cities.

DAY 6 – LUCERNE – MOUNT TITLIS – OBERLAND

This morning, start our walking tour starts at the wooden 14th century Chapel Bridge. Make a photo stop at the Lion Monument, dedication to Swiss guards who died during the French Revolution. Visit Bucherer, Switzerland’s leading watch retailer. Next, we travel to Engelberg to begin your adventure up to the peak of Mount Titlis via Rotair. Where you will be treated to 360-degree panoramic view of steep rocks face. Thereafter, we will drive to Oberland, the gateway to the Jungfrau Region.

DAY 7 – OBERLAND

DAY 8 – OBERLAND – GOLDEN PASS SCENIC TRAIN – MONTREUX – ZERMATT

Today morning , we will experience an unforgettable Golden Pass Scenic Train ride from the luxurious mountain village – Gstaad to Montreux. Thereafter, make a photo stop at Chillon Castle, one of the best-preserved medieval castles in the region that dates back to the 11th century. Thereafter , we travel to Valais – one of most beautiful region in Switzerland. Next, from Tasch Train Station, we will get on-board a Scenic Train proceeding to Zermatt – a car free village at the bottom of Zermatt’s world famous Swiss Alpine – Matterhorn.The Matterhorn Mountain has the highest point of 4478 meter, straddling the main watershed and the border between Switzerland and Italy. Did you know the famous Swiss chocolate Toblerone was designed after the shape of the Matterhorn ? Tonight, we will spend the night in Valais region. Note : Golden Pass Scenic Train maybe replaced with any Swiss Panoramic Train without notice.

DAY 9 – ZERMATT – GENEVA – DIJON

After breakfast, we drive along the Lake Geneva the largest lake in Switzerland surface area about 580.03km2. Thereafter, proceed to Geneva the 2nd-largest city in Switzerland by population size. Upon arrival, we will make stops at landmarks such as the United Nations Building, Flower Clock and a large fountain in the city – Jet d’Eau. Next , we making our way to Dijon , France for a overnight stay.

DAY 10 – DIJON – LA VALLEE VILLAGE – PARIS

Today, we will drive to La Vallee Village, the luxury shopping destination where you will find lifestyle brands reduce by 60% all year round . Tonight , we will be spend the night in Paris .

DAY 11 – PARIS

Begin your Paris adventure with a guided tour of the city cover the glorious Arc De Triomphe that was erected by Napoleon in 1806 as a memorial to his victorious army which has since 1919 become a National monument to the unknown soldiers of France. Drive along Champ Elysees to Place de la Concorde and drive pass Louvre Museum, Alexander III Bridge, Les Invalides. Visit Eiffel Tower built for the exhibition of 1889. Take a lift up to the 2nd level for a charming panorama of Paris.(In the event of Eiffel tower is fully booked or cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances, it will replace by Montparnasse Tower or other attraction)

DAY 12 – PARIS

Enjoy a free day at your leisure. You may do more shopping in this shoppers’ paradise in Paris.

DAY 13 – PARIS – SINGAPORE

This French capital is one of the world's greatest cities and certainly one of its most beautiful. The Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, Louvre and Orsay Museums, the Champs Elysees, Montmartre and the Sacre Coeur, and many others are all iconic symbols of the "City of Light." Renowned for fabulous dining, high fashion and the French savoir faire, one can keep returning to Paris over a lifetime and still not see everything it has to offer.

Sitting on the French Riviera, north of Cannes, is a town that is an olfactory oasis. Set in the hills, Grasse is considered the perfume capital of the world. The town’s fields of jasmine, lavender, and other fragrant flowers are harvested to create essential oils for perfume production. Perfumers (known as a nez, or nose) in Grasse can teach you how to recognize different scents and how top notes, mid notes and the lingering base of a fragrance come together to create a magical aroma.

At 370 acres or three-quarters of a square mile, the Principality of Monaco is the world's second smallest sovereign state. A perfectly preserved medieval enclave of Roman origins, Avignon is set in the heart of France's Provence region on the banks of the Rhone River. For 68 years in the 14th century, Avignon was the capital of Christianity, the seat of 10 Popes before the papacy was brought back to Rome in 1377. Avignon has always been a center for art and culture, a designation that continues with its annual Arts Festival, hosting numerous stage productions, film showings, exhibitions, poetry readings, concerts, mime performances, ballets, and more.

Small-town touring:

Take a break from the City of Light and get a taste of old world France when spending time in countryside villages that look like they are plucked from a storybook. With many unique villages, each region has its own special qualities for you to experience. Travel through hilltops, rocky coasts and remarkable views while learning about the locals and their lifestyles.

Omaha Beach:

This was one of the beach sectors assigned to the American landing forces during the invasion of June 6, 1944. It was here that the U.S. First Division fought the bloodiest engagement on D-Day. Go through the towns that make up the sector: St-Laurent, Colleville and Vierville. Set foot on the beach and reflect on that fateful day and cherish the present peace. The American Military Cemetery stands up on the bluff as a testament to the greatest sacrifice that these Americans have made in the name of freedom.

Dinner at Eiffel Tower:

Put yourself in a scene from a movie; the lights of Paris glitter beneath you as you dine inside one of the world’s most iconic landmarks – the Eiffel Tower. Built in 1889 as part of the World's Fair by the architecture team of Gustave Eiffel, the Eiffel Tower is the symbol of Paris today. Located on the first level is 58 Tour Eiffel, a gourmet restaurant with stunning panoramic views of Paris. Since food is another big part of Parisian culture, the meal is several courses, beautifully displayed and accompanied with wine, coffee and tea.

Cabaret Theatre performance:

Immerse yourself in the nostalgic side of Parisian culture when taking your seat at a traditional cabaret show. Colorful, crazy, glamourous and intriguing are all used when describing the excitement that is Parisian cabarets. Enjoy your meal while being entertained with a show or play in this festive atmosphere.

In many places in France, wine costs less than water. Stay hydrated of course but this is also an affordable chance to try many different varieties of the best wine in the world.

Dinner at the Paradis Latin requires business casual attire; shorts are not allowed. This is your chance to get into the spirit of this exciting night.

The French eat lunch between noon and 2:30p.m. and dinner between 8-11p.m. Many restaurants close after lunch and do not open again until dinner time.
