Welcome to the Consular Services of the Embassy of Mozambique in Washington, DC. The aim of this page is to provide useful information on the requirements for one to apply for an entry visa into Mozambique, types of Visas, fees and mailing modalities. The general principle is that if you are not a Mozambican Citizen, you MUST have a visa to enter Mozambique. However, citizens of the following Southern African countries DO NOT need to require Visa for tourism purposes:

• South Africa

Unless the purpose to enter Mozambique is to  study ,  work  or  reside  in the country, citizens of Brasil, Cabo Verde, China, Cuba, Guine-Bissau, India, Portugal, S.Tomé e Principe, South Korea, and Vietnam, holders of an official or diplomatic passport are visa exempted to enter Mozambique.

Process for applying Visa to Mozambique

• All Passport Data Page, Visa Application Form and documents must be scanned in one PDF file per applicant (except 2 passport size photos, money order and prepaid return label and envelope). Then send it to the Consular email which is [email protected] DO NOT EXCEED 5MB per File/document (reduce the quality of scanner to get a smaller file size pdf)
• The consular will acknowledge once they receive your application by responding to your email “ RECEIVED ”. Please take note that review process may take up to 1-2 weeks as the PDF file will be forwarded to Immigration in Mozambique. DO NOT send your physical requirement yet, wait for the consular to advise you on when you can mail/bring in your Physical requirements, this includes the printed copy of the PDF file, Actual passport, 2 photos, money order and the Prepaid Label with envelope.

3. Processing time takes place once we got the pre-approval from the Immigration in Mozambique and as well when we receive the physical documents/requirements. This may be 3 or 10 Business days depending on what you would choose. Refer below.

Visas can be Single or Multiple Entry

–      The visa must be used within sixty (60) days from the issuance date.

–      Visa fees are non-refundable.

General Requirements:

• Submit an original passport, valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry into Mozambique and with at least 2 blank pages for visa . Amendment pages are excluded.
• Citizens other than from United States of America and Canada, but living in these countries must submit a copy of their permanent residence status .
• Fill the visa application form properly. It is very important that you provide all the information required, including the name and address of your place of stay in Mozambique.  Please be advised that lack of information may result in delay or even denial of your application. Do not forget to sign the application. Please download the form in the following link:  visa Form
• Submit two passport size photographs (passport photos must be in color and with a white background).
• Include a self-addressed envelope or a pre-paid air bill with a tracking number (preferably FedEx), unless the application is brought to the Embassy in person.
• Payment must be only by money order in US dollars, and payable to the Embassy of Mozambique . After a payment you are entitled to a pick up slip.  Please note that visa fees are non-refundable (approved/denied).
• Invitations by non-citizens living in Mozambique must include a copy of “DIRE” as proof of residence.
• Groups of visitors invited by organizations are required to attach one invitation per visa application form.
• Persons under the age of 18 must attach a parental travel consent letter and their birth certificate to the visa application form.
• If the applicant has been in a Yellow Fever endemic country, he must present a Vaccination Certificate, both at the Embassy and at the entry border post.

Types of visa and specific requirements

Visit Visa:      

• Signed invitation Letter from the inviting party in Mozambique as well as a copy of BI (Mozambican ID), Passport (Mozambican) or DIRE.
• Copy of the flight itinerary

Business Visa: 

• When the purpose of entry is business related, a letter from applicant’s company or from the inviting company in Mozambique is required.
• Copy of hotel and flight reservation

Tourism Visa: 

• Confirmed Flight and Hotel Reservation
• Copy of authorization letter from Ministry of Labor/ Ministry of Justice and Religious Affairs in Mozambique.
• Clean bill of Health (3 months validity)
• Copy of work contract in Mozambique.
• Copy of Police Clearance from your current residence, authenticated by the U.S. Department of State in D.C. and recognized by the Embassy of Mozambique. (3 months validity)
• Business Letter from the Company.
• ALVARA (Business Permit)
• Copy of the Mozambican ID of the employer.
• Copy of flight itinerary and a copy of hotel reservation.
• A Single Entry is the Type of Visa you need to apply for.

Document Recognition

• Please make sure the document is authenticated first by the U.S. Department in D.C. before sending it to Consular Services of Embassy of Mozambique.
• A copy of authenticated documents is also needed, money order and Pre-paid return label with envelop.                                                 

Recognition Fee per document

  Residence Visa:  

• Copy of Police Clearance from your current residence, authenticated by the U.S. Department of State in D.C. and recognized by the Embassy of Mozambique.
• If traveling with a Minor, a notarized Parent Consent singed by both parents and a copy of the birth certificate of the child are needed.
• If traveling as a spouse, a letter of responsibility and a copy of your Marriage Certificate

Transit Visa: 

• A visa for the final destination is required, unless this is the applicant’s country of origin or residence

Diplomatic, Official Visa & United Nations  laissez – passer  (UNLP or LP) :

• Only for government officials as well as United Nations, World Bank and International Monetary Fund Staff, when on official business. Applicants must produce official letters from their institution when applying for diplomatic or official visa.

Country Summary: Violent crime, such as mugging, is common.

Terrorist groups in northern Mozambique continue to be active. Public areas may be attacked with little or no warning.

Mozambique’s health infrastructure is limited: there are only three doctors per 100,000 people, frontline health providers are often poorly trained, and medicine shortages are common. More than 1.2 million people in Mozambique have HIV/AIDS, representing a sizable population with compromised immune systems. In the event of a public health emergency, access to an ICU and ventilator support is highly unlikely.

Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

*** Due to technical issues on the Mozambican e-visa website, U.S. citizen travelers wishing to obtain a visitor visa are advised to follow the guidance below related to tourism and business travelers until further notice. Please note an invitation letter is still required.***

• U.S. citizens wishing to enter Mozambique for the purposes of tourism or business are not required to obtain a visa at this time. Entry requirements are determined by the traveler’s length of stay which is decided by immigration officials at the time of visa issuance. Trips spanning more than 30 days likely will require the receipt of an approval to remain extension from the provincial Direcção Nacional De Migração closest to the traveler. Administrative fees may apply. Tourist and business travelers are required to show proof of a round-trip flight and hotel reservation. These travelers may stay  no more than 90 days (consecutive or interrupted) in a year . Travelers are eligible for tourist visas  only if  they do not intend to reside with a citizen or resident of Mozambique during their stay in the country. Due to the absence of a physical visa in travelers’ passports, the Direcção Nacional De Migração encourages travelers under this category to retain their receipt as proof of payment while in Mozambique. Tourist and business travelers from countries not eligible for visa exemption must apply for a visa using the electronic visa (e-visa) platform. 
• Travelers intending to reside with a citizen or resident of Mozambique during their stay in the country must obtain a visitor visa. Pre-approval for visitor visas can be obtained via the e-visa platform. Travelers must submit a notarized letter of support from their host as well as proof of the host’s status in Mozambique (i.e., valid visa, foreign residency document known as a DIRE, or passport) with the application. Visitor visa pre-approvals are located under the “Border Visa” section of the e-visa platform.
• Visa pre-authorizations are accessed via the e-visa platform ( https://evisa.gov.mz/ ). In addition to tourist, business, and visitor visa pre-approvals, the site also provides pre-approvals for those engaging in crew member travel, humanitarian assistance efforts, sports and cultural activity participation, and investment.
• Pre-approvals are not guaranteed visas, travelers must be sure to travel with all requirements related to their visa category for official review and acceptance at the time of arrival to Mozambique. 
• In the case of diplomatic, courtesy, official, transit, student, work, temporary residency, and residential visas, the Mozambican government requires travelers to obtain visas from their nearest embassy or consulate before arriving at Mozambican borders. Those wishing to obtain a visa instead of a pre-authorization prior to arrival in Mozambique can apply for visas at their nearest embassy or consulate.
• Travelers 18 years and below traveling with one parent or unaccompanied must obtain a parental consent for the absent parent(s). The document must be notarized and in written in Portuguese. For additional assistance with this requirement, please contact:  [email protected] . 
• All travelers to Mozambique must be in possession of a  passport at least six months validity after arrival  that contains  least two clean (unstamped) visa pages  each time entry is sought. This does not include endorsement pages.
• Please pay attention to the authorized period of stay on your visa (" Autorizado a permaneçer pelo período de  [number of days]"). This is the maximum number of days you may remain in the country before you  must  depart Mozambique. This is distinct from the validity of the visa which indicates when you may enter Mozambique.
• Travelers not in possession of a valid visa  will be fined  for each day they illegally reside in Mozambique. Trips spanning more than 30 days likely will require the receipt of an approval to remain extension from the provincial Direcção Nacional De Migração closest to the traveler. Administrative fees may apply.
• All travelers except those traveling on diplomatic, courtesy, and official visas have associated fees. Visa-related fees are assessed and paid  only  at the following locations: embassies or consulates, local immigration offices once in Mozambique, and ports of entry (i.e., air, land, and sea borders). Fees are payable by credit card and local currency. Currency exchange options may be available at larger ports of entry for those not in possession of a credit card or local currency. Fee payment is not requested online .
• Travelers have 60 days from the date of visa issuance to use their visa. Unused visas will expire after the 60 th  day.

• Travel to Mozambique often requires transit through South Africa. If traveling with minors, please visit the South African  Department of Home Affairs website  for the most up-to-date requirements as the requirements can change without notice.

Vaccinations:

• A valid certification of vaccination for Yellow Fever is required if you are coming from a country where Yellow Fever is present.
• Border authorities can require all travelers to present a yellow vaccination books.  See the  CDC website  for further information on suggested vaccinations for travel to Mozambique.
• If you cannot present a certificate at the port of entry, you will be vaccinated at your own expense.
• The U.S. Department of State is unaware of any HIV/AIDS entry restrictions for visitors to or foreign residents of Mozambique. Find information on  dual nationality ,  prevention of international child abduction  and  customs regulations  on our websites.

Safety and Security

Road travel outside the city after dark is dangerous. U.S. government personnel are prohibited from traveling outside the major cities after dark by car, and are encouraged not to travel outside the city alone. You should be vigilant when you travel in Mozambique and if you travel to/from South Africa, as both countries have high crime rates.

Crime: Street crimes, including mugging, purse-snatching, and pick-pocketing are common in Maputo and in secondary cities. Carjackings are rare, but still occur.

• Pedestrians have been mugged at all hours of the day. Avoid isolated areas and walking at night, even in well-known tourist areas.
• Avoid walking along the Marginal south of the Southern Sun Hotel and Avenida Friedrich Engels and Rua Caracol.
• Avoid walking along roads bordered by wooded areas, as criminals may hide there.

Johannesburg International Airport:

• Secure your bags. Use an airport plastic wrapping service.
• Avoid placing currency and high value items in checked luggage when transiting.

Landmines:  Mozambique was declared free of all known landmines in 2015; however, there could remain unknown mines in very rural areas. Seek local information before going off-road outside major cities.

Report crimes to the local police and contact the U.S. Embassy at +258 21-49-0723. Local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting crimes. See our webpage on  help for U.S. victims of crime overseas .

• contact relatives or friends with your written consent
• help explain the local criminal justice process

• help find accommodation and arrange flights home
• replace a lost/stolen passport

Domestic Violence:  U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence may contact the Embassy for assistance.

Fraud:  The U.S. Embassy in Maputo has received reports of scams which originate online, and involve promises of large inheritances that require international travel. Victims of this type of scam are asked to deliver suitcases from one location to another, and become unwitting narcotics traffickers. Be skeptical about financial promises made by an online contact, and never carry anything that you did not pack yourself.

Tourism:  The tourism industry is unevenly regulated and safety inspections for equipment and facilities do not commonly occur.  There is some tourism infrastructure, often operated by expatriates, but the host government has limited capacity to regulate.  Hazardous areas/activities are not always identified with appropriate signage, and staff may not be trained or certified, either by the host government or by recognized authorities in the relevant field.  In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is typically available only in/near major cities.  First responders are generally unable to access areas outside major cities to provide urgent medical treatment, especially outside normal working hours.  U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance .

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties: You are subject to host country laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be deported, arrested or imprisoned.  It’s very important to know what’s legal and what’s not wherever you go.

• Penalties for possession, use, or trafficking in illegal drugs in are severe. Convicted offenders can expect long jail sentences and heavy fines.
• Some laws are also prosecutable in the U.S., regardless of local law.  For examples, see our website on crimes against minors abroad  and the Department of Justice website.
• Carry your passport with you at all times. You can be taken in for questioning if you cannot present your passport.  
• Photography of some government buildings may be illegal. Ask before taking pictures.
• Driving under the influence can land you immediately in jail.
• Your U.S. passport will not help avoid arrest or prosecution.

Arrest Notification: If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately. See our  webpage  for further information. Faith-Based Travelers: See the Department of State’s International Religious Freedom Report . LGBTI Travelers: Mozambique is a very tolerant society. Consensual same-sex relations are not criminalized and there is increasing space in public conversation regarding LGBTI issues. There remains, however, some societal stigmatization and room for progress in terms of full equal treatment, such as in the registration of LGBTI groups. Travelers Who Require Accessibility Assistance: Although the government legislatively mandates access to public buildings, transportation, and government services for persons with disabilities, few buildings are accessible.

• Restaurants, hotels, and residential buildings have stairs at the entrance without wheelchair ramps, except perhaps at a few major hotels and retail areas.
• Pedestrian paths and transportation are extremely difficult for persons with disabilities.
• Sidewalks are not commonplace and, if they exist, are poorly maintained and dangerous to walk on at night.
• Pedestrian crossings are infrequent and drivers seldom obey traffic signals.
• Buses and taxis do not have special accommodations for disabled persons.

Women Travelers:

• Rape:  The law prohibits rape, including spousal rape, but it is not effectively enforced and is largely unknown in rural areas where the majority of rapes take place. Penalties range from two to eight years’ imprisonment if the victim is 12 years of age or older and 20 to 24 years’ imprisonment if the victim is under 12, according to the new penal code.
• Domestic Violence:  The law prohibits violence against women. Domestic violence against women, particularly spousal rape and beatings, remain widespread. Abuse of a spouse or unmarried partner is punishable with one to two years in prison, or a greater penalty if in conjunction with another crime.

Consult the CDC website for the Mozambique prior to travel. Medical facilities are rudimentary, and most medical providers do not speak fluent English. Medications are not always available.  Public and private medical facilities exist in the city of Maputo and most provincial capitals.

• All health care providers require payment at the time of or before providing service. Most do not accept credit cards.
• You are responsible for all medical costs. U.S. Medicare does not cover you overseas.
• Prescriptions Medications: Check with Ministry of Foreign Affairs to ensure the medication is legal to bring into the country.  Always, carry your prescription medication in original packaging with your doctor’s prescription. 

Medical Insurance : Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. See our webpage for more information on insurance coverage. We strongly recommend  supplemental insurance  to cover medical evacuation. 

Vaccinations : Be up-to-date on all vaccinations recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety : The EN4 toll road between Maputo and South Africa is well-maintained. The road network connecting provincial capitals is in fair condition, but can be riddled with potholes and other obstacles. Vehicles on certain sections of the EN1 roadway in Sofala and Manica provinces and the EN6 between Beira and Chimoio have been shot at and the Government of Mozambique has instituted convoys on some stretches of the road. U.S. Embassy officials are restricted from traveling in Sofala or Manica on the EN1 between the Save River (in the south) and the city of Caia (in the north) and on the EN6 between Beira and Chimoio. Restrictions are also in place on the EN7 from Nova Vanduzi to Luenha.    

• U.S. government personnel are prohibited from traveling outside cities after dark because of the increased risk of banditry, poor road conditions in some areas, poor maintenance of many vehicles in the country (e.g., no headlights or rear lights), as well as the threat imposed by livestock grazing on roadsides and intoxicated drivers.
• Travel outside Maputo often requires a four-wheel drive vehicle, which creates an additional security risk since these vehicles are high-theft items. Public transportation is limited and often has poor safety standards.   

Accidents Serious traffic accidents are one of the greatest threats to U.S. citizens in Mozambique. Accidents involving drivers and pedestrians are common and sometimes fatal. The potential for accidents increases at night due to unseen holes and obstructions, poor lighting conditions, pedestrians on the highways, and other vehicles driving without headlights. If a serious accident occurs or if a driver hits a pedestrian, crowds quickly gather.

• Mozambican law requires parties to an accident to render assistance ; however, you should exercise your best judgment. Render assistance if necessary and practical, but only if you feel you can do so without placing yourself at risk.
• Report the accident to the nearest police station and contact the U.S. Embassy immediately.

Traffic Laws :   Drivers should obey police signals to stop at checkpoints, which are common throughout Mozambique. Foreigners visiting Mozambique for more than 90 days are required to have an International Driver’s License or to obtain a Mozambican driver’s license. Public Transportation : The U.S. Embassy advises U.S. citizens not to use “ chapas ” (local minibuses) as a method of transportation due to frequent, often fatal accidents involving these vehicles. Aviation Safety Oversight : As there is no direct commercial air service to the United States by carriers registered in Mozambique, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has not assessed the government of Mozambique’s Civil Aviation Authority for compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aviation safety standards. VISA REQUIREMENTS:

Mozambique has introduced a new visa exemption program for ordinary passport holders for nationals from Belgium, Canada, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ghana, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Ivory Coast, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom , and the United States for a 30-day stay (renewable for an additional 30 days upon justification) for business and tourism. The newly added visa-exempt nationals may travel to Mozambique with their travel documents and pay a processing fee of MZN 650 upon arrival.

The citizens of Botswana, Malawi, Mauritius, Swaziland, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe do not require an entry visa when travelling to Mozambique for no more than 30 days and not for residence or working purposes.

Legislation on visa exemptions

NOTE: Please, be advised that the issuance of entry visas (not covered above) requires a pre-authorization from the immigration authorities in Mozambique.

The process takes approximately 30 working days. Collections 48 Hours after full payment.

The following information applies to the citizens and nationals of ALL COUNTRIES for visas not covered by the visa exemptions mentioned above. 

ALL APPLICANTS WITH NORMAL PASSPORTS MUST SUBMIT THE FOLLOWING DOCUMENTS:

• Valid passport with at least six months validity and at least three (3) or more blank pages;
• Photocopy of the main passport page(s);
• Two (2) colour passport photos;
• A document to confirm the applicant’s address during his/her time in Mozambique. This may be either a Hotel booking confirmation or an invitation letter from the host in Mozambique, which is required if the applicant will be staying at a private home with his/her family or friends. In the latter case, the invitation letter/Term of Responsibility must be signed by the host and notarized by the public services notary;
• Applicants must also present a copy of their bank statement of the last three months proving that they have adequate funds for the duration of their stay in Mozambique;
• Holders of Visit and Tourist visas are not allowed to engage in any employment (including voluntary work) while in Mozambique;
• For Business Visas it is also required a letter/Term of Responsibility from an official or business institution in the United Kingdom, including if traveling for private business or volunteer activities, and a letter of invitation from the official or business institution in Mozambique. In the case of invitation by a business institution in Mozambique, copies of its official documents (License authorizing its activities, and a Certificate confirming its financial and tax situation, if applicable) and of a representative (Passport and residence visa, or ID) are also required.
• All documents should be printed in 1 sided A4 Paper.

• Copy of the employment contract authorized by the competent authorities in Mozambique (e.g. Ministry of Labor);
• Criminal Record Certificate issued by the official authority of the applicant's country of nationality or last residence for at least one year (to be valid in Mozambique needs to be notarized by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office - FCDO and by the High Commission, which can be done together or separated from the visa application);
• Health Certificate (to be valid in Mozambique needs to be notarized by the FCDO and by the High Commission, which can be done together or separated from the visa application);
• Copies of the official documents of the employer (License authorizing its activities, and a Certificate confirming its financial and tax situation, if applicable);
• Letter from the employer requesting the work visa, including a copy of a personal document of the letter subscriber (Passport and residence visa, or ID).
• All documents should be printed on 1 sided A4 Paper.

Requirements for a Residence visa:

• Requirements 1, 2, and 3 for Normal Passports;
• Copy of the employment contract authorized by the competent authority (e.g. Ministry of Labor);
• Applicants must present a copy of their bank statement for the last six months proving that they have adequate funds for the duration of their stay in Mozambique.

Requirements for a Humanitarian Assistance visa:

• A letter specifying the reason for the application and the planned length of stay;
• Criminal Record Certificate issued by the official authority of the applicant's country of nationality or last residence for at least one year;
• Health Certificate.

PLEASE ALSO NOTE:

• The submission of an application for an entry visa and payment of the fee is not an assurance of its approval as such a decision is solely the responsibility of the Mozambican authorities, following individual examination of each application;
• The visa fee is not refundable;
• Additional documents may be required;
• Applicants may be asked for an interview;
• The issuance of a Visa can take less or longer than usual;
• Applicants are required to indicate a contact (UK phone or email) at the submission of the application.
• Applications (documents in photo format will not accept) can also be sent by post and must include a  Registered Royal Mail return envelope.

DEFINITIONS:

A single Entry Visa allows one entry. The length of stay can range from a minimum of 1 day to one month, renewable in Mozambique, provided that the Visa is still valid at the moment of application. Visas must be used within two months from the emission date.   Multiple Entry Visa allows more than one entry. The maximum length of stay for each entry is 30 days. Visas must be used within three months from the emission date, not from the entry date in Mozambique.  

POSTAL APPLICATIONS -  ATTENTION:

Due to the recent and alarming cases of violation/loss of postal applications, including passports, and in order to ensure the safety of applicants, as of 10 July 2017, the Consular Section of the Mozambique High Commission in London will only post out passports with processed Visas if, in addition to the full compliance with Visa requirements, the following procedures/rules are observed:

• Use only of registered postal services/companies, including: (i) a complete address and name for the return of the passport; (ii) an official envelope from a registered postal service; (ii) an official tracking number from a registered postal service.

The use of official envelopes and tracking numbers are, therefore, designed to prevent or minimise the growing mail violations while allowing for easier detection of signs of violation and tracking thereof.

Postal applications that do not follow the above procedures/rules will no longer be processed.

Applications received at the Consular Section with clear signs of having been violated will be returned to the registered postal service.

The Consular Section is not liable for the loss, delay or violation of the postal applications while en route to and from the High Commission.

Entry visas for the Republic of Mozambique can be obtained from Mozambican diplomatic missions and consular offices abroad, designated border posts, immigration services, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation. Prohibited items include narcotics and pornographic materials. Other items such as firearms require a permit.

Foreign currency exceeding the amount of US$5,000 or equivalent in cash must be declared at customs .

All visitors, except South Africans and Malawians, require visas in order to travel to Mozambique , and it is better to have it all ready before you get to the border gate – you can get a visa there, but it is not guaranteed; visas are issued at either the Mozambiquan embassy, high commission or consulate. You can get single entry visas or multiple entries. An official Mozambique visa is a green sticker which is barcoded, it will be stamped in your passport.

ALL NATIONALITIES traveling to Mozambique need to obtain an entry visa before arrival: (Exceptions: Angola, Botswana, Eswatini, Kenya, Malawi, Mauritius, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe for no more than 30 days and not for residence or working purposes)

Applicants should comply with the following requirements:

• Original passport with six months minimum validity and must have at least 1 blank page for the visa. Amendment pages are excluded. For foreigners residing in U.S.A.: a copy of the residence permit/visa.
• Photocopy of the passport bio page.
• Fill in the visa application form properly (one color ink, blue or black). It is very important that you provide all the information required, including the name and address of your place of stay in Mozambique. Please be advised that lack of information may result in delay of your application. Additional documents may be required.
• Two passport size photos (must be in color against a white background and taken within the last 6 months, cut accordingly to 2” x 2” size).
• Copy of flight reservations.
• Latest copy of the bank statement (blocked out the sensitive information).
• For Tourist Visas, a document to confirm the applicant’s address during his/her time in Mozambique. A copy of hotel reservation.
• For Business Visas, Business invitation letter from the company in Mozambique – explaining the reasons for the trip and being responsible for the stay in Mozambique. Copy of hotel reservation.
• Applications submitted by mail which will not be retrieved directly at the Mission, please include a self-addressed or prepaid labeled return envelope preferably with a tracking number.
• For family and friends Visiting Visas, Invitation Letter from the inviting party in Mozambique as well as a copy of BI (Mozambican ID), Passport (Mozambican) or DIRE. Invitations by organizations operating in Mozambique must include a copy of their legal status issued by the Mozambicans authorities.
• For Diplomatic, Service/Official passports and Laissez-Passer (No Fee), a Note Verbal or an official letter from their institution when applying for diplomatic or official visa .

DEFINITIONS:

Single Entry Visa allows one entry. The length of stay can range from a minimum of 1 day to one month, renewable in Mozambique, provided that the Visa is still valid at the moment of application. Visas must be used within two months from the emission date .

Entry requirements

This advice reflects the UK government’s understanding of current rules for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK, for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Mozambique set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Mozambican High Commission in the UK .

COVID-19 rules

There are no COVID-19 testing or vaccination requirements for travellers entering Mozambique.

Passport validity requirements

To enter Mozambique, your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after the date you arrive.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Make sure you get your passport stamped.  

You need at least 2 blank pages for entry stamps.

Visa requirements

You can travel without a visa to Mozambique for tourism or business for up to 30 days.

On arrival, you must be able to show border control a written invitation from your host, or a confirmed hotel reservation, and a return or onward air ticket. You must pay a fee of 650 Mozambican meticais using cash or card.

For all other travel purposes, you can apply for a visa online through the e-visa portal .

Entering Mozambique by land crossing

It can take a long time to clear border formalities at the Lebombo-Ressano Garcia land crossing from South Africa, especially during holiday periods. There can be delays if you are travelling on public transport. Allow time to get to your destination before nightfall.

There have been armed robberies close to the Lebombo border in Nelspruit. These often take place in the queue for the border, mainly after dark. When you stop at junctions or in queues, stay alert and ensure you have space to turn and drive off.

Travel to or from South Africa  

If you’re planning to enter South Africa before or after you visit Mozambique, or if you’re planning to travel through South Africa, check the travel advice for South Africa .

Vaccination requirements

At least 8 weeks before your trip, check the vaccinations and certificates you need in the Mozambique guide from TravelHealthPro .

The Cost of Travel in Mozambique: My 2024 Budget Breakdown

Mozambique marked my first foray in Sub-Saharan Africa and I couldn’t have chosen a better destination to start with.

I spent a full month travelling across this country, and now? I’m fully obsessed with Mozambique. I can’t stop talking about how hard I’ve fallen for the beaches, the people, the sealife, the food, and the laid-back way of life.

This is one of my favourite countries on the planet and I’m so excited to start sharing why.

But first, let’s talk about expenses.

In this post-pandemic world, the cost of travel has been skyrocketing, but Mozambique has managed to remain relatively inexpensive.

Today, I’m going to be revealing exactly how much you can expect to spend on a trip to Mozambique.

I’ve been recording every single dollar, peso, and baht that I’ve spent on my travels since 2011 (I now have  over 65 budget breakdowns on the site !), aiming to give you an accurate picture of how much you can expect to spend in every country around the world. Today, it’s Mozambique’s turn and I’m so excited to start sharing.

Let’s get started. Note that prices below are listed in Euros.

How to Save Money on Flights to/From Mozambique

Let’s start with actually getting to Mozambique. This country isn’t overrun with tourists, so you won’t find the same number of flight options that you would for a country like neighbouring South Africa.

Being based in Europe, I found the flight options to be super-reasonable, thanks to TAAG Angolan Airlines . In fact, my flight (with a layover in Luanda) was just €250 return from Lisbon, Portugal, meaning Mozambique was cheaper to fly to than many European destinations would have been!

Because of this, do keep an eye on Angolan Airlines’ website, just in case a sale happens to coincide with your travel dates.

Mozambique is a former Portuguese colony, so that also means that TAP (Portugal’s national airline) flies direct into Maputo for reasonable prices. Even when there aren’t sales on, it’s not hard to find return flights from Lisbon for under €700. If you’re based in Europe, then, you may find that it’s cheaper to fly first to Portugal, and then onwards to Mozambique.

As always, I recommend heading to  Skyscanner  to compare flight deals and find the cheapest option.

If you’re flexible with dates and itinerary, you’ll find the best deals by searching by setting your flight departure date to be across an entire month. This will show you the cheapest dates to fly and ensure you have the very best deal possible.

In general, you’ll find that it’s cheapest to fly to Mozambique outside of high season; low season is between January and April. Despite this being the middle of the rainy season, I visited in January and only had a single day of wet weather. It meant I was able to take advantage of the lower prices while also lounging on the beaches in the sun. I lucked out, of course, so visiting at this time of year does involve taking a risk on the weather.

September to November marks out the shoulder season, where you’ll encounter cooler weather and fewer tourists. If you do have the freedom to visit during shoulder season, I highly recommend it, as it’ll mean spending less on flights and accommodation while having to deal with fewer tourists. Shoulder season is my favourite time of year to travel, and it’s worth making the effort to do so in Mozambique.

What if you’re not in Europe?

Most travellers to Mozambique hail from South Africa, so flights are relatively inexpensive if that’s where you’ll be coming from — expect to pay R3000 return. Many people opt to drive into Mozambique as well, so that’s definitely an option if you’re keen to avoid flight and rental car costs.

In terms of my North America readers, getting to Europe is surprisingly cheap these days, and I wouldn’t expect you’d need to pay more than around $400 for a return ticket. Allow me to introduce you to one of my favourite websites in the world:  Secret Flying ! I’d estimate that half of the flights I book these days are due to a deal I’ve found on Secret Flying.

From Europe, you’ll then be able to utilise the tips above to score a cheap flight to Mozambique.

And for all of the above: you may find it cheaper to first look for flights to Johannesburg and then make your way to Mozambique from South Africa.

How to Save Money on Accommodation in Mozambique

Like practically every country in the world, prices have increased post-pandemic in Mozambique, so you’ll be paying a little more for everything than you would have done a few years ago. Despite that, costs  are  lower than most Western countries, so accommodation in the country still offers up good value for money.

Let’s start on the lower end of the spectrum. If you’re willing to put in the time and effort, it’s possible to avoid paying for accommodation entirely.

Couchsurfing  exists in Mozambique and allows you to stay with a local for free, usually sleeping on their sofa and enjoying a local’s insight into life in their country. It’s not the most comfortable of living situations, and there aren’t a huge amount of hosts in Mozambique, but if you’re on a tight budget, it might be worth sending out a few requests to see if anything comes of it. You can browse through the 10,000-odd local hosts registered on  the Couchsurfing site , but don’t rely on it if you’re used to bouncing your way from sofa to sofa elsewhere in the world; there’s not much a scene here.

Workaway  is another option, where you can help provide work (farming, language-learning, charity work) in exchange for food and accommodation from a host. Its an excellent way to spend more time in Mozambique, get to know the country away from the tourist centres, and save on your travel budget.

And then we have  hostels . In Mozambique, you’ll only find hostels in the most touristy of destinations (think: Maputo, Tofo, Vilanculos), and even then typically only one or two in each place. Where they do exist, though, they’re usually well-rated, clean, and one of your best options for saving money.

Hostels in Mozambique  are on a par with much of south-eastern Africa, and you can expect to spend around €12 a night for a dorm bed  for the best-rated hostels in the country

When it comes to private rooms in hostels, you’ll be looking at around  €30 a night  for a clean, basic room in a good location, so if you’re travelling with friends or with your partner, you may find it doesn’t cost much more to grab some privacy over settling for two beds in a dorm room. 

In Mozambique, I recommend the following hostels.

• Maputo: Base Backpackers is the best spot for backpackers in Maputo, with a central location, helpful staff, and safe premises. Dorm rooms are €17 a night , while a private double is €41 a night . The property is extremely clean, the roof terrace offers up lovely views, and the Wi-Fi is fast. Overall, a great place to stay.
• Tofo: Kitesurf Tofo House is the best-rated hostel in the entire country, racking up an average review score of 9.8/10 on Booking ! You’ll pay €10 a night for a bed in a four-person dorm, or €27 a night for a queen room. What I loved most about Kitesurf Tofo is its location: it’s close to the beach and close to the action, but just far enough away that you don’t have to deal with any noise. The owners are wonderful, the bedrooms beautiful, and the garden perfect for relaxing in.
• Vilanculos: Baobab Beach is the spot where everybody ends up staying in Vilanculos — myself included! It’s a fun, lively, friendly hostel, where it’s easy to make friends, excursions run everyday, and there’s still a calm, quiet atmosphere for when you need to sleep. Dorm beds start at just €13.50 a night , while private doubles come in at €36 a night .

And then there are hotels, which I’m going to jump into next.

The Cost of Accommodation in Mozambique

Here’s where I stayed in the country:

GuestHouse 1109, Maputo : €47/night (single) , €75/night (double)

This is easily one of the best-value guesthouses you’ll find in Maputo, which is otherwise pretty expensive for accommodation. My single room was basic but clean (the double rooms looked much bigger and nicer!), the pool was lovely, and the staff were super-friendly and helpful., with loads of useful tips about where to go and what to see in Maputo The hotel is in a great central location downtown, within walking distance of the cathedral and most of the city’s other attractions, and there’s a vey reasonably-priced airport transfer available if you need it. Breakfast is tasty if you decide to eat onsite, but I decided to try the nearby restaurants instead: there were several of them within a short walk.

Baia Sonambula, Tofo : €61/night (single), €86/night (double)

One of the best places I’ve ever stayed in and such great value for money! If you want a bit of luxury travel in Mozambique, stay at Baia Sonambula . The staff are incredible, it’s located just up from the beach, the rooms are gorgeous, the views are the best, the breakfasts are divine (and included!), and you even get free cake and coconut water every afternoon. I spent five nights and considered cancelling the rest of my trip in order to spend even longer there. I’m currently trying to convince all my friends to take a trip to Mozambique with me and it’s mostly so that I have an excuse to return to Baia Sonambula. 

Baobab Backpackers, Vilanculos : €36/night

Baobab Backpackers is a standard backpackers hangout: it’s rustic, there are cockroaches, and the rooms are hot and humid. If, however, you’re looking for a chilled-out spot on the beach to make friends and be well-looked after, this is the place for you! Despite the relative discomforts (especially after my stay at Baia Sonambula), I really liked it and would stay here again. Lots of activities and excursions for you to take, there’s a restaurant on-site, which is useful if you’re feeling lazy, and the staff are so, so lovely. 

Total cost for accommodation in Mozambique: €554 over 11 days = €50.36 per day.

The Cost of Transportation in Mozambique

Transportation is unbelievably inexpensive if you’re willing to suck it up and ride the chapas. To quote from my post about what it’s like to travel in Mozambique :  Imagine a humid minivan with poor suspension, swerving its way over pot-holed roads on a thirty-degree day. Now imagine filling it with 10 times more people than the recommended capacity until you’re all packed in the back like sweaty sardines. Maybe throw a child on your lap, a broken seat below your legs, and some pungent food in there, too. Now, get the driver to rip you off on the price.

Before arriving in the country, I planned to travel overland from place to place to save money, but it only took two days for me hand in my backpacker card and swear off using them. Unfortunately, though, if you’re not willing to use the chapas, don’t want to hitchhike, and don’t want to rent a car, there aren’t many other inexpensive overland transport options you can take.

So, yeah. I definitely splurged on transportation on this trip. I flew from Maputo to Inhambane for €92 , then took a free hotel shuttle to Tofo (the entire journey would have been around €11 total by chapa), then to get from Tofo to Vilanculos, I splurged on hiring a private car after finding out the overland journey would involve a ferry, multiple chapas, and many hours stood alone on the side of the road attempting to flag a ride down. I didn’t feel comfortable hitchhiking as a solo woman.

Cities and towns in Mozambique are small, so you can walk basically everywhere you need to. I explored Maputo and Tofo on foot, and took tuk-tuks in Vilanculos in the evenings for safety reasons (the guesthouse staff told me it was unsafe to walk around at night). It cost around € 1-2 each way to most places in the town.

The Cost of Food in Mozambique

Food is cheap, cheap, cheap and delicious in Mozambique, and you definitely won’t go hungry. Portions were huge!

It was super-common for breakfasts to be included in the price of your room, and they were all pretty standard breakfast fare of toast, butter, scrambled eggs, some fruit, and coffee. Baobab Backpackers didn’t include breakfast but had a restaurant on site where you could grab an enormous omelette before hitting the sandbanks.

In Mozambique, you’ll find peri-peri-smothered everything and the enormous seafood platters will fill your stomach. Yes, if you’re not a fan of chilis or seafood, you may find yourself having to hang out in tourist restaurants every now and then.

The seafood is delicious, though, with some of the best prawns and crayfish I’ve ever had the pleasure of eating and some seriously great deals. A seafood platter split with two friends came to €6 each in Vilanculos, and was washed down with a €2 beer . I also had things like peri-peri chicken, bean curry, and smaller seafood meals like calamari or fish curries: they all set me back €5-7 .

For something local that’s without Portuguese influence, there’s a dish called matapa, which is stewed cassava leaves, cooked with seafood and covered with peanuts, garlic, and coconut milk. I didn’t try it because I can’t eat peanuts, but friends who did liked it more than they expected. It typically costs € 3-4 .

Matapa is often served with xima, another super-common food you’ll find throughout Mozambique. Best described as a thick porridge or soft dough and made from maize flour, it’s unlikely to be something you order separately; rather, it’ll accompany many dishes in the same way that bread or rice might do elsewhere.

Speaking of bread, one of the many ways that Portuguese colonisation has influenced the local cuisine will be obvious the first time you pass a bakery. Crusty rolls known as pãozinho are very common in Mozambique; the same word is used in Portugal for a very similar type of roll, and you’ll likely get one served with your meal pretty often.

Drinking-wise, I used my  Grayl water purifier bottle  that kills 99.999% of all viruses, bacteria, and cysts in water, making it completely safe to drink. I drank the tap water everywhere in Mozambique, didn’t get sick, saved money on water bottles, and didn’t pollute the country with my plastic waste. I highly recommend grabbing one of these for your trip. If you’re short on space, a Steripen is a great option for making tap water drinkable.

When I wanted to drink something other than water, I usually went for either a soft drink or a beer. I typically paid about 50c for a bottle of Coke in a local restaurant, and around a euro for a large glass of Laurentina or 2M beer.

Fruit is insanely cheap in Mozambique, and especially if you eat multiple portions of it a day — you’ll find deals like 30 mangoes for 20c while you’re wandering around the markets, and the locals will be bemused if you want to buy just one.

I spent just €101 on food during my 11 days in the country. That’s € 9.18 per day! 

The Cost of Activities in Mozambique

To save money on activities in Mozambique, you should plan to wait until after you’ve arrived in the country to start booking experiences. Like many places around the world, the prices listed online for tours and activities are drastically higher than what you’ll pay by turning up and asking around.

It’s worth mentioning, too, that if you’re a solo traveller, you’ll find it beneficial to stay in hostels and take advantage of the group tours that are run for travellers. When looking at tours outside of my accommodation, group tours were rare, and private ones charged at least twice as much if you were alone.

So what type of activities can you expect to experience in Mozambique, and most importantly, how much do they cost?

The main star of the show here is hanging out with whale sharks. Tofo is one of the best places on the planet to swim with megafauna: whale sharks, manta rays, humpback whales, dolphins — and rarely, even hammerhead sharks. I took a boat trip with Liquid Dive Adventures , which cost €55 for a two-hour trip where I got to snorkel with whale sharks! It was amazing!! They also run scuba trips so you can get even closer to this amazing sea life: it costs € 55 per dive.

In Vilanculos, I opted for an island excursion that was arranged through Baobab Backpackers . It cost € 50 to spend a full day on  Ilha de Magaruque and included snorkelling equipment and a fish barbecue lunch. This was my favourite experience in Mozambique and well worth the money I spent! I wish I’d had longer in Vilanculos so I could have jumped on another one of their tours.

In Mozambique, it is possible to rock up and negotiate with the local fishermen to hire a dhow for the day at a cheaper price, but you’re taking a risk by doing so. Hotel staff warned me of the dangers of doing this (potentially to convince me to take their tours, mind you!) and said there was a risk that the fishermen could take you out to an island, then ask for more money to bring you back.

The Cost of Miscellaneous Stuff in Mozambique

Visas:  Depending on where you’re coming from, a Mozambiquan tourist visa might be quite pricey, pretty cheap, or completely free! If you hold a passport from a SADC country, which includes South Africa and other nearby African countries, you’re exempt from tourist visa requirements for visits of up to three months.

Citizens of 29 other countries , including the UK and USA, can get a 30-day visa exemption on arrival for 650 MZN ( € 9.50) . If none of that applies to you, you’re looking at $50 USD ( € 46.20) for a single entry tourist visa. Citizens of almost all countries can get a visa on arrival as long as you can prove you’re a tourist (print out of a copy of your flight out of the country and accommodation confirmations). You can also get an e-visa in advance , but it costs over twice as much for the same thing.

A local SIM card: Now. I don’t know about you, but one of my least favourite aspects of arriving in a new country is having to figure out how to get connected. Specifically: buying a local SIM card so that I have data to use while I’m in the country.

There’s locating a store that will sell you one, language barriers to deal with (in Mozambique, I did struggle with this), various forms of ID you might need to bring, scams to navigate, and… well, it’s a headache.

This year, I started using  Airalo , which sells local e-SIM cards for travellers. What that means is that you can buy your SIM card online  before  you arrive in Mozambique, and then as soon as you land in the country, you can switch on your data and start using it. It’s worked flawlessly for me and I’ll never go back to physical SIM cards. You’ll pay between $8 (€7.40) for 1 GB of data and  $24 (€22.20) for 5 GB of data  and can top-up through the Airalo app.

Anti-malarial tablets:  Mozambique was the first country where I took anti-malarials! The country has one of the highest risks of malaria in the world, and cerebral malaria is common, so you’ll really want to make sure you take anti-malarials and take them properly. I opted for generic Malarone tablets, which were  € 2.24  per tablet . Doxycycline is a much cheaper alternative at €0.18 per tablet, but requires you to also take the tablets daily for a month after you leave the country and is an antibiotic, which I definitely didn’t want in my system.

Travel insurance: If you’ve read any other posts on Never Ending Footsteps, you’ll know that I’m a great believer in travelling with travel insurance. I’ve seen far too many Go Fund Me campaigns from destitute backpackers that are unexpectedly stranded in a foreign country after a scooter accident/being attacked/breaking a leg with no way of getting home or paying for their healthcare. These costs can quickly land you with a six-figure bill to pay at the end of it.

In short, if you can’t afford travel insurance, you can’t afford to travel.

Travel insurance  will cover you if your flight is cancelled and you need to book a new one, if your luggage gets lost and you need to replace your belongings, if you suddenly get struck down by appendicitis and have to be hospitalised, or discover a family member has died and you need to get home immediately. If you fall seriously ill, your insurance will cover the costs to fly you home to receive medical treatment.

I use  SafetyWing  as my travel insurance provider, and recommend them for trips to Mozambique. Firstly, they’re one of the few companies out there who will actually cover you if you contract COVID-19. On top of that, they provide worldwide coverage, don’t require you to have a return ticket, and even allow you to buy coverage after you’ve left home. If you’re on a long-term trip, you can pay monthly instead of up-front, and can cancel at any time. Finally, they’re more affordable than the competition, and have a clear, easy-to-understand pricing structure, which is always appreciated.

Things to Know About Money in Mozambique

• You’ll pay for most things in Mozambican Meticals (pronounced meti-caish), but the South African rand and U.S. dollars are widely accepted, too.
• ATMs often run out of cash, and some of them just wouldn’t work with my Visa debit card, so if you can’t get money out of the first one you try, don’t panic! Try a few others before concluding that your card has been blocked.
• Expect to pay with cash in restaurants, but all accommodation I stayed at had card readers, and so did the tour companies.
• Tipping isn’t expected, but I like to tip a small amount anyway.
• You basically can’t change meticals outside of the country! I forgot about this and took a whopping €140 worth of meticals out of Mozambique with me, turned up in South Africa, and discovered nobody would change them. Fortunately-ish, Portuguese currency exchange places do change meticals, but at an appallingly bad rate. I got just €65 for mine once I landed back in Lisbon. If you aren’t headed to Portugal, though, don’t expect you’ll be able to change your money once you’ve left.

And that’s how much it costs to travel in Mozambique! I spent around €1010 for my 11 days in the country, which works out at €92 per day .

It’s not the cheapest country in the world, but it’s far from the most expensive, and there were definitely a number of ways I could have kept my costs down. If I’d been happy to stay in hostels, eat cheaply, travel overland, and minimise the number of activities I did, for instance, it wouldn’t have been hard to travel around for as little as €25-30 a day .

We have some transport concern…indeed we couldnt find a private transport from Vilanculos to Gorogonsa National Park. We find someone who could do this trip for 350$…which is very expensive. Mozambique Visa Requirements - Documents, Eligibility & Fees

Indian passport holders who are willing to apply for a Mozambique visa can find the necessary visa information on this page. In the following, you can find Mozambique visa requirements which mainly include the visa documents and eligibility criteria. General guidelines to be followed at the time of submission of Mozambique visa documents are mentioned on the page. For further visa consultation, you can contact BTW Visa Executives.

Following is the general list of documents required for Mozambique visa for Indians.

A passport is a document that is required at the time of international travels. It is issued by the government of the country to verify the identity and nationality of the candidate.

The submitted passport must meet the parameters given below

• It must have minimum two blank pages for the visa stamp.
• It must be valid for 6 months ahead of the span of stay.
• It must be original and genuine.
• It must not be torn, ripped, split, or damaged in any kind of way.

One cannot cross international boundries without the passport. It is considered a criminal offense otherwise.

The photo is provided to the authority so that you can be identified based on the same.

The photographs must be provided as per the given photo specifications

• It must cover face 80% of the frame.
• It must be of proper size with dimensions of 35x45 mm (length - 45mm, breadth - 35mm).
• Two copies to be submitted with general photo guidelines.
• It must be clicked on an all white background.
• It must have a matte finish.
• It must be a recent photograph.
• The expressions on the face must be neutral, there must not be any kind of smiling of frowning in the photograph.
• Any kind of glasses must not be worn in the photograph.
• The hair must be tied back so that the face is clearly visible.
• The ears must be visible clearly.
• It must not have any headgear worn apart from religious reasons.
• It is to be taken care that your teeth do not show in the photograph.

Recent pictures are mandatory as old pictures can cause the authorities to reject your application.

An air ticket is a ticket or pass that is possessed by the traveller who is taking a flight for travelling from one location to another.

It is an important document and it should be submitted for the given reason

• It must be confirmed for the to and fro journey to Mozambique.
• It must be confirmed for the complete round trip.

An air ticket shows your course of travel and confirms your return to the native country.

A yellow fever vaccination is a medical certificate that proves the applicant as non-contagious for the disease.

It should be submitted as per the following

• It must be original and should be issued from an authorized medical organization.

An old passport is a passport that has expired or is completely stamped. In the visa processing, it is required to track the travel history of the applicant.

If available, the old passport must also be provided meeting the given criteria

• If any of the traveller has old passport, it must be submitted along with latest passport.
• It must be original and in a good condition to access the required information.

Citizens residing in Belgium, The Netherlands, and Luxembourg may request entry visas for Mozambique at the Embassy of Mozambique located in Brussels - Belgium. Citizens of different nationalities working in the EU institutions as well as in international organizations based in these countries can also apply for visas at this Embassy.

NON COMPLIANCE

Applicants who have been expelled, forbidden to enter the Republic of Mozambique, or declared "persona non grata" do not comply with the General Conditions for obtaining entry visas.

VISA EXEMPTIONS

Nationals holding passports from the SADC countries do not require visas to enter the Republic of Mozambique. This exemption allows foreign nationals to remain in the country for a period that cannot be extended and cannot exceed 90 days.

Visit Visas are meant for applicants who are planning to travel to the Republic of Mozambique to visit family and friends.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

Providing applicants meet the General Conditions, the Specific Requirements are to be submitted to the embassy. The submission can be done directly at the embassy or via registered mail. The visa application processing and issuing take approximately 2 weeks.

VISA FEES & VALIDITY

Visit visas are subject to application processing fees at the value of € 60 and are valid for 30 days. However, once in the country applicants may extend the visa for an additional 30 days. This visa type can also be with multiple entries at a visa application fee of € 120.

SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS

Applicants are to gather all documents, as specified in this section, items 1 to 9, ensuring good visibility, and submit them to the embassy. This can be done directly at the embassy or via registered mail. The Embassy is located at:

RETURN VIA REGISTERED MAIL

If you wish for the passport/s to be returned via registered mail, please include the following amounts in cash when sending or delivering the documents to the Embassy:

1. TRAVEL DOCUMENT

The document should have validity not less than six (6) months / 180 (one hundred eighty) days.

2.  MEANS OF SUPPORT

Proof of possession of sufficient funds during the applicant's stay in Mozambique.

3. AIRLINE TICKET

Applicants should provide a copy of the airline ticket. The ticket should be for a round trip.

4. RECENT PHOTO

Applicants should provide one recent passport-sized photo

5. ACCOMMODATION PROOF

Applicants should provide proof of accomodation.

6. VISA PROCESSING FEES

Payment of visa processing fees.

7.  LIABILITY LETTER

A liability letter, if the visa application is based on an invitation by a private entity; the letter should be certified by the Notary Service of Mozambique. The liability letter must include a commitment that ensures that the costs of the stay of the applicant in Mozambique are covered, as well as any costs of repatriation, if necessary.

8. TRAVEL CONSENT

If a minor is traveling alone or with one parent only, a travel consent document is required. The document should be signed by the parent(s)/ legal guardian and authenticated by the relevant authorities of the country of origin or residence for the past two years.

9. APPLICATION FOR ENTRY

The form entitled APPLICATION FOR ENTRY TO MOZAMBIQUE has to be duly completed and signed by the applicant.

The form can be filled only in English, Portuguese or French, in capital letters, and in black or blue ink. Abbreviations and acronyms are not permitted.
