Best Time To Visit Auli

Hill stations welcome travelers and tourists all year round. Some may prefer the mild temperatures of Auli in summer to escape the heat while others may prefer to see the snowy sheets covering the whole landscape during the winter months. Depending on your preference, here's how each season can affect your visit:

Summers (From March to June)

The weather is temperate during these months, with the temperature at a comfortable range of 11 to 15 degrees Celsius. This is the ideal time for engaging in activities like hiking, camping, sightseeing, and more because the temperatures are not so cold that it's hazardous to engage in these activities. Most honeymoon packages in India include trips to Auli during this time.

Monsoon (From July to October)

These are the months when there is heavy rainfall, which can sometimes make traveling difficult due to roadblocks and slippery conditions that can sometimes be hazardous. However, tip rates are significantly lower during this time, which can be a great trade-off. Temperatures around this time range from 9 to 12 degrees.

Winters ( From November to February)

These are the months of snowfall when temperatures can drop down to -8 degrees Celsius. This is the perfect time for those people who love braving colder temperatures and enjoy snowfall. During this time Auli is one of the Best Places to Enjoy Snowfall in February in India .

How to Reach Auli

By air

The Jolly Grant airport in Dehradun is closest to Auli. From there, taking a cab or bus to Auli is best. This is one of the fastest ways to reach Auli if you prefer convenience, and depending on where you're traveling from, it can be as quick as a few hours.

Taking the road to hill stations is also popular among many travelers. However, this is mostly viable during summer and not advisable during monsoon or winter. Depending on where you start, you'll find road tour routes to Auli in the best tour packages in India .

By railways

The Rishikesh Railway is located the closest to Auli and is well connected to most other railway networks. The railway is certainly one of the more scenic routes to Auli, crossing numerous landscapes and villages along the way. From Rishikesh onwards, you'll have to take a taxi or a bus to Auli, which will also have scenic quotes, lush green coniferous forests, and a noticeable transition from the cityscape to the hills.

The Top 8 Things to Do in Auli, Uttarakhand

auli travel places

anand purohit/Getty Images

Auli, one of the best places to visit in Uttarakhand , rose to prominence as a snow skiing destination after hosting the first South Asian Winter Games in 2011. While Gulmarg in Kashmir is undoubtedly more accessible and has superior facilities, less-commercialized Auli offers serene conifer-lined slopes and spectacular Himalayan mountain views. It's located about 3,000 meters (10,000 feet) above sea level in the Chamoli district of Uttarkhand, on the way to Badrinath . Admittedly, it's not easy to get there (be prepared for a long 10 hour drive from Haridwar or Rishikesh ). The uncrowded, pristine terrain is worth it though! Here's the pick of things to do in Auli, even if you're not a skier. The destination has something for nature-lovers throughout most of the year except the monsoon season , during July and August.

Ski, Of Course!

Varma Gajarla/Getty Images

Auli's south-facing slopes mean that the ski season is limited to just a month or so, from around mid January to the end of February, each year. Snowfall has become temperamental too, due to global warming. Downhill and cross-country skiing are both possible at Auli, although the skiable area isn't large. There are four downhill runs, with one ideally suited to beginners. A 500-meter J-bar standing surface lift services the beginner run, while the other runs are connected by an 800-meter chairlift. One ride on the chairlift costs 500 rupees per person, while it's 50-100 rupees for the J-bar. Day passes are available for skiers.

There are a range of options for learning how to ski, for all levels. These include freelance instructors, courses by private operators, and seven and 14-day courses conducted by Uttarakhand Tourism's Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam (which provides and maintains Auli's infrastructure). Local skiing champion Ajay Bhatt founded Auli Ski and Snowboard School , the recommended private operator. If you enroll in a course, the cost will include accommodations, equipment rental, lift fees, meals and training. Otherwise, you'll need to arrange and pay for everything separately if you get lessons from a freelance instructor,

Ride Asia's Longest Aerial Tramway

During winter, the aerial tramway/ropeway is the easiest way to reach Auli. It runs from Joshimath to Auli, over a distance of 4 kilometers (2.5 miles), and is the only way of getting to Auli if the road is covered in snow. The journey takes about 25 minutes and costs 1,000 rupees per person, return. Tickets can be purchased from the ticket counter at Joshimath. There are fixed departure times every 15-25 minutes throughout the day, with the first departure at 9:15 a.m. and last departure at 4:20 p.m. in winter. However, the aerial tramway will often only run if it's filled to capacity of about 20 people.

Spot the Himalayan Peaks

Richard I'Anson/Getty Images

One of the things that makes Auli special is that it's surrounded by so many major Himalayan mountain peaks. These include Nanda Devi (7,817 meters), Kamet (7,756 meters), Mana Parvat (7,272 meters), Chaukhamba (7,138 meters), Trishul (7,120 meters), Dunagiri (7,066 meters), Nanda Kot (6,806 meters), Hathi Parbat (6,727 meters), Gauri Parbat (6,719 meters), Neelkanth (6,597 meters), Bethartoli (6,354 meters) and Panchchula (5,904 meters). Nanda Devi is India's highest peak, not taking into account Mount Kanchenjunga (which is partially in Nepal). A panoramic view of these powerful snow-clad peaks, which literally loom over you from some places in Auli, has a profound impact.

Trek to the Highest Point in Auli

Dinodia Photo/Getty Images

For unsurpassed views of peaks such as Nanda Devi and Dunagiri head up to Gorson Bugyal (meadow). At 3,056 meters above sea level, it's the highest point in Auli. Although it's not very far from the aerial tramway station, the steep incline requires a picturesque 2-hour trek through oak forest to get there. Alternatively, it's possible to ride on a pony at a cost of about 800 rupees. The meadow is particularly attractive during spring, when it's carpeted in lush green vegetation. If you're feeling energetic, you can also include Chattrakund, a pretty sweet water lake, in your day trek around Auli. Do take a guide with you to Chattrakund, to avoid getting lost in the dense forest.

Visit the Temple Where Lord Hanuman Rested

Michael Scalet/Flickr/CC BY-SA 2.0

Auli is even connected to the great Hindu epic, "The Ramayana," which narrates the life story of Lord Ram. Accordingly to mythology, Lord Hanuman rested there for a while when traveling to the Himalayas to get a healing herb called Sanjeevani for Lord Ram's brother Laxman, who was injured while fighting demons in Sri Lanka. The small temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman sits near the Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam hotel at Auli and provides a magnificent view.

Check Out the Artificial Lake

Another of Auli's claims to fame is its artificial lake, which is said to be one of the highest in the world. It's located next to the Clifftop Club . The water from the lake is used to feed the snow-making machines that have been installed to improve snow cover. However, the ability to make snow is dependent on weather conditions, and unfortunately unseasonably high winter temperatures have had a negative impact on this.

Glamp Under the Stars

If you don't care about snow and simply want to enjoy the outdoors, glamping is a fabulous way to do so. Auli Woods is the first luxury campsite in Auli, with just six fully-equipped premium tents nestled into the mountainside. It was set up by mountaineer and skiing champion Ajay Bhatt, who also has a popular luxury homestay (Himalayan Abode) in nearby Joshimath, in addition to founding Auli Ski and Snowboard School and Himalayan Snow Runner adventure trekking company. (Yes, he's done a lot to promote tourism in the area!). Auli Woods is open from April to January, although the weather is best from May to June and September to October. The cost is 7,500 rupees per night for a double, including breakfast and dinner. Plenty of activities are offered including village visits, jungle walks, night trails, day hikes, horse riding, and photography.

Go Bird Watching

Mary Plage/Getty Images

In April and May, after the snow has cleared, birds start venturing to the higher regions of Uttarakhand. Birding enthusiasts will be delighted with the unusual Himalayan species that can be spotted around Auli, such as the Himalayan Monal (a type of pheasant) and Himalayan Griffon vulture. The forests are also home to doves, eagles, tits, jays, woodpeckers, spotted nutcrackers, and sunbirds. Serious birders should consider staying at Devi Darshan Lodge , run by community-owned ecotourism company Mountain Shepherds . Their local staff are qualified mountaineers and conduct outstanding bird watching hikes. They can take you completely off-the-beaten-track to places tourists don't visit.

Therefore, first, you’ve to reach Joshimath which is situated at a distance of 276 KM from Haridwar, stay there for the night and leave early in the morning for Auli.

Try to leave early in the morning to reach Joshimath by evening because most of the road is surrounded by mountains so you can’t travel during the night. Therefore, you’ve to stay one night in Joshimath to reach Auli.

There are three ways to reach Joshimath from Haridwar – Bus, shared taxi or you can travel by your own car or bike. From 5 AM to 9 AM, you can easily get buses from Haridwar to Joshimath which takes around 8 to 10 hours to reach Joshimath. By evening you’ll reach Joshimath. There are lots of staying options in Joshimath where you can spend a night.

The distance between Joshimath to Auli is around 11 km, which can be covered in two ways – by road or cable car. The cable car is the highly recommended way to reach Auli because it is the second-longest and highest cable car in Asia. It takes around 25 minutes to reach Auli which can cost you around 1000 INR including a return from Auli to Joshimath as well.

The first ropeway ride leaves around 9 AM from Joshimath while the last ropeway leaves around 4:20 PM. And the same timing while returning from Auli to Joshimath. Important info: During the peak season try to book ropeways tickets well in advance. From midnight around 1 AM tourists stand in queue for the next day’s tickets, therefore, most of the tickets are sold out during the morning. So you’ll hardly get any tickets if you arrive there in the afternoon.

From the road journey, you can easily get a shared jeep and taxi in Joshimath that takes around 30 to 40 minutes to reach Auli. The taxi or jeep can cost you around 1000 to 2000 INR from Joshimath to Auli so it’s good to book a taxi from Haridwar to Auli rather than Haridwar to Joshimath. It can help you save lots of money.

By Flight: Jolly Grant Airport of Dehradun is the nearest airport to Auli which is situated just 278 KM away from Auli. Auli is a hill station located in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand state in India. It has rightly derived its name Auli - meaning meadows, from the characteristics of its topography. The hill station is located on slopes and has far-stretching meadows that look stunning to the eyes. Auli is fondly referred to as a place where nature comes alive in all its glory and splendor. It is rich in natural resources and offers a stunning landscape of the surrounding hills.

The hill station has a plethora of wildflowers and trees like deodars, oaks, coniferous and pine forests. The slopes here which are as high as 9000 feet above sea level offer stunning views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks; like that of Nanda Devi, Kamet, Dunagiri, and Mana Parvat. There are a number of attractions here at the hill station. The most famous one amongst tourists is the ropeway.

Auli tour packages offer a unique experience to explore the highest and longest ropeway not only in India but across Asia, providing breathtaking views of the Himalayan peaks. Auli’s artificial lake, one of the world’s highest man-made lakes, adds to its allure. Additionally, Chattrakund and Chenab lakes are two other captivating destinations to visit in Auli. Known as the skiing capital of India, Auli ensures an unforgettable skiing experience amidst its pristine beauty.

The winter months offer this thrilling experience and invite enthusiasts from across the globe. Other activities in Auli include trekking to nearby hills like Guarso and Kwani Bugyal. There is also a great scope for camping in and around Auli.  The cherry on top is the weather in Auli. The hill station being located on a slope is high in altitude but is also surrounded by dense vegetation of deodars and oaks. This controls the pace of the wind blowing here and thus, giving Auli a pleasant environment.

Ideally placed in the mountains, Auli is also the base town to travel to the holy town of Vishnuprayag, where one can clearly see the two tributaries of Alaknanda and Dahuliganga merging together to form one single river. Vishnupruyag is actually one of the five places (Panchprayag) where the river meets its sister tributaries before transforming into the mighty Ganga River.

Vishnuprayag lies in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand and is located at an elevation of 1,372m above sea level. At the banks of this majestic sight, one can also see a famous Vishnu temple that was built by the Maharani of Indore way back in 1889. The Moscow Metro Museum of Art: 10 Must-See Stations

There are few times one can claim having been on the subway all afternoon and loving it, but the Moscow Metro provides just that opportunity.  While many cities boast famous public transport systems—New York’s subway, London’s underground, San Salvador’s chicken buses—few warrant hours of exploration.  Moscow is different: Take one ride on the Metro, and you’ll find out that this network of railways can be so much more than point A to B drudgery.

The Metro began operating in 1935 with just thirteen stations, covering less than seven miles, but it has since grown into the world’s third busiest transit system ( Tokyo is first ), spanning about 200 miles and offering over 180 stops along the way.  The construction of the Metro began under Joseph Stalin’s command, and being one of the USSR’s most ambitious building projects, the iron-fisted leader instructed designers to create a place full of svet (radiance) and svetloe budushchee (a radiant future), a palace for the people and a tribute to the Mother nation.

Consequently, the Metro is among the most memorable attractions in Moscow.  The stations provide a unique collection of public art, comparable to anything the city’s galleries have to offer and providing a sense of the Soviet era, which is absent from the State National History Museum.  Even better, touring the Metro delivers palpable, experiential moments, which many of us don’t get standing in front of painting or a case of coins.

Though tours are available , discovering the Moscow Metro on your own provides a much more comprehensive, truer experience, something much less sterile than following a guide.  What better place is there to see the “real” Moscow than on mass transit: A few hours will expose you to characters and caricatures you’ll be hard-pressed to find dining near the Bolshoi Theater.  You become part of the attraction, hear it in the screech of the train, feel it as hurried commuters brush by: The Metro sucks you beneath the city and churns you into the mix.

With the recommendations of our born-and-bred Muscovite students, my wife Emma and I have just taken a self-guided tour of what some locals consider the top ten stations of the Moscow Metro. What most satisfied me about our Metro tour was the sense of adventure .  I loved following our route on the maps of the wagon walls as we circled the city, plotting out the course to the subsequent stops; having the weird sensation of being underground for nearly four hours; and discovering the next cavern of treasures, playing Indiana Jones for the afternoon, piecing together fragments of Russia’s mysterious history.  It’s the ultimate interactive museum.

Top Ten Stations (In order of appearance)

Kievskaya station.

auli travel places

Kievskaya Station went public in March of 1937, the rails between it and Park Kultury Station being the first to cross the Moscow River.  Kievskaya is full of mosaics depicting aristocratic scenes of Russian life, with great cameo appearances by Lenin, Trotsky, and Stalin.  Each work has a Cyrillic title/explanation etched in the marble beneath it; however, if your Russian is rusty, you can just appreciate seeing familiar revolutionary dates like 1905 ( the Russian Revolution ) and 1917 ( the October Revolution ).

Mayakovskaya Station

Mayakovskaya Station ranks in my top three most notable Metro stations. Mayakovskaya just feels right, done Art Deco but no sense of gaudiness or pretention.  The arches are adorned with rounded chrome piping and create feeling of being in a jukebox, but the roof’s expansive mosaics of the sky are the real showstopper.  Subjects cleverly range from looking up at a high jumper, workers atop a building, spires of Orthodox cathedrals, to nimble aircraft humming by, a fleet of prop planes spelling out CCCP in the bluest of skies.

Novoslobodskaya Station

auli travel places

Novoslobodskaya is the Metro’s unique stained glass station.  Each column has its own distinctive panels of colorful glass, most of them with a floral theme, some of them capturing the odd sailor, musician, artist, gardener, or stenographer in action.  The glass is framed in Art Deco metalwork, and there is the lovely aspect of discovering panels in the less frequented haunches of the hall (on the trackside, between the incoming staircases).  Novosblod is, I’ve been told, the favorite amongst out-of-town visitors.

Komsomolskaya Station

Komsomolskaya Station is one of palatial grandeur.  It seems both magnificent and obligatory, like the presidential palace of a colonial city.  The yellow ceiling has leafy, white concrete garland and a series of golden military mosaics accenting the tile mosaics of glorified Russian life.  Switching lines here, the hallway has an Alice-in-Wonderland feel, impossibly long with decorative tile walls, culminating in a very old station left in a remarkable state of disrepair, offering a really tangible glimpse behind the palace walls.

Dostoevskaya Station

auli travel places

Dostoevskaya is a tribute to the late, great hero of Russian literature .  The station at first glance seems bare and unimpressive, a stark marble platform without a whiff of reassembled chips of tile.  However, two columns have eerie stone inlay collages of scenes from Dostoevsky’s work, including The Idiot , The Brothers Karamazov , and Crime and Punishment.   Then, standing at the center of the platform, the marble creates a kaleidoscope of reflections.  At the entrance, there is a large, inlay portrait of the author.

Chkalovskaya Station

Chkalovskaya does space Art Deco style (yet again).  Chrome borders all.  Passageways with curvy overhangs create the illusion of walking through the belly of a chic, new-age spacecraft.  There are two (kos)mosaics, one at each end, with planetary subjects.  Transferring here brings you above ground, where some rather elaborate metalwork is on display.  By name similarity only, I’d expected Komsolskaya Station to deliver some kosmonaut décor; instead, it was Chkalovskaya that took us up to the space station.

Elektrozavodskaya Station

auli travel places

Elektrozavodskaya is full of marble reliefs of workers, men and women, laboring through the different stages of industry.  The superhuman figures are round with muscles, Hollywood fit, and seemingly undeterred by each Herculean task they respectively perform.  The station is chocked with brass, from hammer and sickle light fixtures to beautiful, angular framework up the innards of the columns.  The station’s art pieces are less clever or extravagant than others, but identifying the different stages of industry is entertaining.

Baumanskaya Statio

Baumanskaya Station is the only stop that wasn’t suggested by the students.  Pulling in, the network of statues was just too enticing: Out of half-circle depressions in the platform’s columns, the USSR’s proud and powerful labor force again flaunts its success.  Pilots, blacksmiths, politicians, and artists have all congregated, posing amongst more Art Deco framing.  At the far end, a massive Soviet flag dons the face of Lenin and banners for ’05, ’17, and ‘45.  Standing in front of the flag, you can play with the echoing roof.

Ploshchad Revolutsii Station

auli travel places

Novokuznetskaya Station

Novokuznetskaya Station finishes off this tour, more or less, where it started: beautiful mosaics.  This station recalls the skyward-facing pieces from Mayakovskaya (Station #2), only with a little larger pictures in a more cramped, very trafficked area.  Due to a line of street lamps in the center of the platform, it has the atmosphere of a bustling market.  The more inventive sky scenes include a man on a ladder, women picking fruit, and a tank-dozer being craned in.  The station’s also has a handsome black-and-white stone mural.

Here is a map and a brief description of our route:

Start at (1)Kievskaya on the “ring line” (look for the squares at the bottom of the platform signs to help you navigate—the ring line is #5, brown line) and go north to Belorusskaya, make a quick switch to the Dark Green/#2 line, and go south one stop to (2)Mayakovskaya.  Backtrack to the ring line—Brown/#5—and continue north, getting off at (3)Novosblodskaya and (4)Komsolskaya.  At Komsolskaya Station, transfer to the Red/#1 line, go south for two stops to Chistye Prudy, and get on the Light Green/#10 line going north.  Take a look at (5)Dostoevskaya Station on the northern segment of Light Green/#10 line then change directions and head south to (6)Chkalovskaya, which offers a transfer to the Dark Blue/#3 line, going west, away from the city center.  Have a look (7)Elektroskaya Station before backtracking into the center of Moscow, stopping off at (8)Baumskaya, getting off the Dark Blue/#3 line at (9)Ploschad Revolyutsii.  Change to the Dark Green/#2 line and go south one stop to see (10)Novokuznetskaya Station.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.
