The Bantu are a group of people who speak related languages and have similar social characteristics. They occupy a large part of Zaire and southern as well as eastern Africa. The Bantu are said to have originated from somewhere in the Congo region of central Africa and spread rapidly to the Southern and eastern Africa. (Today, more than one half of the population of Uganda are Bantu.) There are several groups speaking different Bantu Languages.

Bantu are said to have settled in Uganda between A.D. 1000 and A.D. 1300. Some reasons are given to explain why the Bantu moved from their original homeland to come to settle in Uganda. One reason is that they might have been overpopulated and therefore some groups decided to move away in search of vacant lands on which to practice agriculture. Another reason given is that they might have moved away just in search of fertile lands or due to internal conflicts within their communities or external attacks by their neighbors. Other reasons suggested include diseases and natural disasters which might have made them uncomfortable in their homeland and so they decided to move away. One other reason is that they may have been encouraged to move away in quest of adventure and this was because they had invented iron tools which enabled them to confront wild animals and other obstacles during their movements.

Having moved away from their original homeland, the Bantu who settled in present Uganda include; the Baganda, the Banyoro, the Batooro, the Banyankole, the Bakiga, the Bafumbira, the Basoga, the Bagwere, the Banyole, the Bagishu and the Basamia-Bagwe.Though there are striking similarities in language and customs among the different Bantu groups, each group has its own peculiarities in customs and other social arrangements.

EFFECTS OF THE BANTU MIGRATION

The coming of the Bantu to Uganda had many effects. The most obvious among such effects is that they led to the settlement and increased the population of eastern, central, and southern Uganda. They are also credited with introducing iron working in Uganda. Although it is not yet clear whether it was the Bantu or the legendary Bachwezi who introduced iron working in Uganda, We still believe that the Bantu might have come with the idea because their movement coincided with the Iron Age 9A.D 500-500).

It is also stated that the Bantu introduced centralized governments of the type that existed in the Bantu kingdoms of Buganda, Bunyoro-kitara, Nkore and Toro, Igara and Buhweju. The assertion however has raised a number of theories. Some historians assert that the idea of centralized government could have been an indigenous one. They attribute state formation to the Bachwezi whom they say were Hamites from Ethiopia who were of either Portuguese or Greek origin. Such assertions are presently not taken very seriously because they contain a lot of bias against the idea of African initiative. It can therefore be tentatively stated that the Bantu brought the idea of centralized state formation while these assertions are subjected to further research.

The Bantu are also said to have introduced agriculture. This is true because their predecessors were essentially hunters and gatherers. In addition to agriculture, the Bantu also introduced crops such as millet and Sorghum.

The Bantu can be categorised into the following groupings with distinctive cultures

Gorilla Safaris

We offer gorilla tours, chimpanzee and other primate safaris in Uganda and Rwanda.

Sites for gorilla safaris include the Bwindi Impenetrable Rain Forest National Park, situated in south-western Uganda, and home to roughly half of all mountain gorillas on the African continent.

The park covers about 200 square miles of extremely dense rain forest and is a proclaimed World Heritage site.

Part of the fun of tracking gorillas here is trying to follow them through the dense foliage. You can also get to see chimpanzees as well as some spectacular bird life.

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is situated on the extreme southwest corner of Uganda on the slopes of the Virunga Mountains, bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda.

The park only covers 28 square miles so it’s quite small, but besides gorillas you can also see leopard, buffalo, bush buck and golden monkeys.

This park is home to the Nyakagezi gorilla group, which is known as a trans-boundary group, largely because they move between Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Ugandan gorilla permits cost $700 USD. Rwanda gorilla trekking is $1500 all year, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, gorilla tours are $400 for all seasons.

The Pearl of Africa

Why Visit Uganda?

Uganda is known as the pearl of Africa for a reason. It is probably Africa’s best-kept secret, offering a fantastic variety of experiences and landscapes while maintaining its serene beauty. A country truly gifted by nature, Uganda supports a diversity of habitats, from snow-capped mountains to lakes, winding rivers, forested reserves and jungles.

Uganda is a thriving destination with various opportunities for the more adventurous traveller. It forms an East African Community with Kenya and Tanzania , with Tanzania located pretty much in the heart of the continent and bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo to the west, Rwanda to the south, and Sudan to the north.

Home to half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, Uganda offers trekking expeditions through local villages and canopies of rainforests. Here you can get the rare opportunity to see a family of gorillas nesting among the bamboo. And as if that’s not enough of an adventure, you can also stand at the foot of the continent’s tallest mountain range and see the source of the White Nile.

But Uganda is not only about meeting majestic gorillas and chimpanzees. You can also enjoy a traditional East African safari in one of the game parks dotted around the country. The Queen Elizabeth National Park is famous for its unique tree-climbing lions that rest in the giant fig tree branches.

Whatever your adventurous spirit seeks, our East Africa Travel Experts can make it happen!

In Africa, It's Not About What You Know, But Who You Know.

We've partnered with the best to ensure you get front row seats at the best possible price., frequently asked questions.

We've taken the liberty to answer everything you may need to know about visiting Uganda

Although it's a year-round destination, the best time to visit Uganda is generally considered to be between June to September and December to March.

This is mainly because Uganda has two distinct seasons, namely the dry and rainy seasons. The long dry season is best for gorilla trekking because the terrain is easier to hike on. At the same time, conditions for Big 5 safaris are also ideal during these months because the bush is dry and there are fewer water sources, which makes it easier to spot wildlife.

During the shorter rainy season from October to December, Uganda is lush and migrant birds make their debut. March to May is the country's long rainy season, meaning fewer crowds, so you might snag some great deals. Furthermore, this time of year is actually great for chimpanzee trekking because these primates move lower down the slopes looking for more warmth and fruit, so it's a shorter walk to find them.

A gorilla safari in Uganda is one of those bucket-list experiences that many people only dream about. It's highly exclusive, and you need to obtain a licence to be allowed gorilla trekking. Of course, this is all to protect these endangered primates for future generations.

Everything is done to ensure the gorillas are not disturbed, limiting the number of people and time spent with the gorilla families at a time. Therefore, to ensure booking your gorilla safari is a seamless experience, it's always best to book with experienced travel experts. And as the World's Leading Safari Company, we can confidently say that's us!

Uganda is a thriving destination with diverse offerings for the more adventurous traveller. Here is our list of the best things to do in Uganda:

Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest:  The Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is a national park home to almost one-half of the world's endangered mountain gorilla population. This makes it perfect for your safari because gorilla trekking is one of the best things to do in Uganda. As a result, it's an extremely valuable conservation site and one of the top places to visit. Bwindi is situated southwest on the edge of the Great Rift Valley and is considered the most diverse forest in the country.

Chimpanzee Trekking in Kibale National Park:  Kibale is one of the top destinations in the world to go chimpanzee trekking. About 500 of these primates call this area home, and the chimpanzee trekking tours leave twice a day with an expert guide who will lead you through the verdant rainforest to meet them. The Kibale forest is rich in wildlife, making it perfect for your Uganda safari, but it's best known for its primate population. Besides chimpanzees, you can see red-tailed monkeys, diademed monkeys, olive baboons, and black and white colobus on your luxury safari in Uganda.

Queen Elizabeth National Park:  Uganda is not just about gorillas and chimpanzees. You can also enjoy a traditional East African safari in one of the national parks dotted around the country. The Queen Elizabeth National Park is located at the base of the Rwenzori Mountains, and the views from some of the camps are simply spectacular. It boasts an array of wildlife such as lions, leopards, elephants, and antelopes, including the native Ugandan kob. The national park is also home to over 600 bird species, making up a quarter of Africa's total birdlife!

The Mountains of the Moon:  In ancient times, it was reported that the much-debated source of the Nile was a group of massive mountains in East Africa. It was said that the Nile flowed from the mountains into a series of large lakes. The natives called this range the Mountains of the Moon because of their snow-capped whiteness. Today, you can admire these mountains from afar or, for the more adventurous, you can tackle them on challenging multi-day hikes. On the range's foothills lie the crater lakes, also called explosion craters, which are extinct volcanoes. These picturesque crater lakes (some over 400m deep) are ringed with improbably steep hills. It's a great spot to settle in for a few days to explore the footpaths or cycle the seldom-used roads.

Murchison Falls:  Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda's largest national park and where its most significant drawcard, the famous Murchison Falls, is located. Here, hippos, crocodiles, waterbuck and buffalo gather on the river banks. Other wildlife includes lions, leopards, elephants, giraffes, hartebeest, oribi, Uganda kob, chimpanzees, and many bird species.

Most airlines can be used to get to Entebbe, whether via Nairobi, Dubai, Addis Ababa, Amsterdam or Doha. The East African Tourist Visa is a collaboration between Uganda, Rwanda and Kenya designed to make the region more attractive as a tourist destination by making travel easier through the purchase of a single visa. However, because visa requirements are constantly changing, our Travel Experts can provide you with the latest requirements to make your dream trip possible.

For travelling within Uganda, it is recommended to use a reliable taxi service for transportation to and from the airport. The use of four-wheel self-drive vehicles is highly encouraged for trips around the cities.

Uganda has various cultural groups speaking over 30 different languages, with English and Swahili as the official languages. Ugandans can be classified into these broad language categories: Bantu, Nilotics, Madi-Okoru or the Sudanic speaking, and the Pygmoid (who live mainly isolated in the rainforests of western Uganda). One-third of the Ugandan population is comprised of Roman Catholic, one-third is Protestant, 16 percent is Muslim and 18 percent believe in local religions.

In the countryside, a variety of festivals, ritual celebrations and familial gatherings demonstrate the culturally rich experience a traveller could enjoy.

The largest and most noteworthy museum in the country is the Uganda Museum in Kampala. Others include those at Murchison Falls and Queen Elizabeth national parks. Although Kampala's vibrant city is a traveller’s favourite, it is located outside of the city. However, it's Uganda’s national parks and reserves that lure most travellers.

It is recommended that you get vaccinated against the following before your trip: Diphtheria, Malaria (there is a considerable risk), Yellow Fever, Hepatitis A and B, HIV in Africa, Meningitis and Tetanus, Tuberculosis, Typhoid and Rabies. You are advised to have your Yellow Fever vaccination card with you at all times, as well as all other vaccinations administered, when travelling between countries. It's best to seek advice from a specialist travel doctor when planning your East Africa trip.

Ugandan cuisine consists of traditional and modern cooking styles, practices, foods and dishes, with English, Arab, Asian and especially Indian influences. Most tribes have their own speciality dish or delicacy. Many dishes include vegetables and fruit, such as potatoes, yams, bananas and other tropical fruits. Chicken, fish, beef, goat and mutton are commonly eaten, although among the rural poor meats are consumed less than in other areas. Tea and coffee are popular beverages and important cash crops, served English-style or spiced. Coca-cola, Pepsi and Fanta, as well as traditional and Western beers are widely available. Fermented banana wine is popular, as is Waragi (distilled spirits).

The Equator runs through the country, although the average altitude of 1,000 meters provides some relief from the heat and humidity. The average temperature is 26°C, and the high summer is from December to February. The rains occur from April to May in the south and again from October to November, so we advise against travelling there during these months, as locomotion can be difficult. The north is humid from April to October, but it is largely off the tourist trail.

5 of Uganda’s most magnificent national parks

Few African nations can match Uganda in terms of the wide variety of parks and reserves to explore. From action-packed 4WD safari adventures to breathtaking mountain hikes, these five national parks offer memorable experiences to set your heart racing.

bantu africa travel uganda

In Uganda’s national parks, there’s an adventure at every turn. This supremely fertile and biodiverse equatorial nation may be famous for its great apes, but it's also a prime destination for those looking to spot lions, monkeys and giraffes. Uganda is also home to over 1,000 bird species, from long-faced shoebills and delicate warblers to dazzling turacos and bush-shrikes. With tangled rainforests, steamy papyrus swamps, soaring mountains and layer upon layer of cultural heritage including three world heritage sites (two of which are national parks), this is a nation to explore in detail, one park at a time.

1. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Best for: trekking with mountain gorillas

Some of Uganda’s most thrilling safari experiences require you to set out on foot. Hiking in Bwindi Forest National Park tops many adventurers’ wish lists, as this is one of the few locations in the world where tourists can track and encounter mountain gorillas. Alongside expert guides, visitors can navigate the steep and abundant rainforest in the hope of spending a precious hour in the company of a family of gorillas. While watching them respectfully from a distance, you can see them forage, groom and go about their daily lives.

While gorilla trekking is utterly unforgettable, it’s not the only way to explore this protected forest. Join a guided birdwatching or plant-spotting walk, and you’ll hear and see a host of fascinating species. Additionally, Batwa cultural performers, whose ancestors lived among the trees, run organised events on the forest fringes to share their rich heritage.

bantu africa travel uganda

2. Rwenzori Mountains National Park

Best for: rare, high-altitude flora and fauna

Uganda’s spectacular Rwenzori Mountains National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994 — contains Africa’s third-highest mountain, Margherita Peak on Mount Stanley (5,109m). Ecologically, geologically and culturally, the park is hugely significant, containing the highest and most permanent sources of the River Nile and a bounty of endemic plants, including giant heathers, groundsels, lobelias and medicinal herbs.

Make no mistake, this national park is challenging to explore. But for resilient hikers and climbers, the Rwenzoris’ striking alpine scenery has masses of rugged appeal, with snowy glaciers, fast-flowing rivers, lakes and waterfalls. Birds are plentiful, and with luck, you can also spot forest elephants, L’Hoest’s monkeys and Rwenzori black-fronted duikers.

3. Kidepo Valley National Park

Best for: semi-arid savannah, giraffes and cheetahs

Is there any creature more graceful than a giraffe in full gallop? They look as if they’re travelling in slow motion, even when they’re topping 34 miles per hour. One of the best places to see these natural athletes is Kidepo Valley National Park : its picturesque savannahs are a stronghold of the rare and endangered Rothschild’s giraffes — a subspecies of the Northern giraffe.

Kidepo is the least known of Uganda’s vast protected grasslands. Named after the seasonal Kidepo River, it’s tucked away in Uganda’s remote northern reaches, over 10 hours by road from the capital Kampala. Make an effort to visit, and you’ll be richly rewarded — in addition to giraffes, you could spot cheetahs, ostriches, bat-eared foxes, and other aridity-adapted species found nowhere else in Uganda.

bantu africa travel uganda

4. Murchison Falls National Park

Best for: the Victoria Nile, hippos and elephants

The Nile, a river of legends, surges through Uganda with youthful vigour. One of its most spectacular cascades lies at the heart of Uganda’s largest protected area, Murchison Falls National Park . Here, water flowing between Lake Victoria and Lake Albert tumbles through a rocky gorge, just seven to ten metres wide, at around 300 cubic metres per second. For energising views, visit the Top of the Falls Viewpoint or follow the gorge’s hiking trails.

Below the falls, the banks are richly vegetated, and the waters serene. Take a leisurely afternoon boat trip along the Victoria Nile from Paraa, and you’ll see hippos, elephants, crocodiles and dozens of birds among the Borassus palms and papyrus stalks.

5. Mount Elgon National Park

Best for: budget-friendly mountain adventures Mount Elgon National Park , Africa’s eighth-highest massif, can only be explored on foot. Located on the Ugandan-Kenyan border, it’s far quieter than other major East African mountain destinations such as Kilimanjaro, Mount Kenya and the Rwenzoris. Mount Elgon is an excellent option for hikers and climbers seeking a peaceful, good-value adventure. The three main trailheads are accessible by road, and park entrance and guiding fees are affordably priced.

UK sanctions corrupt politicians in Uganda who stole from vulnerable communities

The UK has imposed sanctions on Ugandan politicians charged with corruption

bantu africa travel uganda

  • UK imposes sanctions on Ugandan politicians including the Speaker of Parliament following corruption charges for stealing from the poorest communities in Uganda.
  • This is the first time the UK has used the Global Anti-Corruption Sanctions regime on individuals involved in corruption in Uganda.
  • New sanctions are part of the UK’s continued effort to crack down on serious corruption around the world.

Deputy Foreign Secretary, Andrew Mitchell, has announced sanctions on high profile Ugandan politicians charged with corruption, and the Speaker of the Parliament of Uganda, today (30 April).

It is the first time the UK government has used the Global Anti-Corruption Sanctions regime on individuals involved in corruption in Uganda.

The three individuals, two of whom were previously ministers responsible for Uganda’s poorest region, Karamoja, and have been charged with corruption at Uganda’s Anti-Corruption Court, will be subject to travel bans and asset freezes.

The two former ministers sanctioned – Mary Goretti Kitutu and Agnes Nandutu – stole thousands of iron sheets used for roofing and infrastructure from a Ugandan government-funded project aimed at housing some of the most vulnerable communities in the region, providing them to prominent politicians and their families instead.

The Speaker of the Parliament, Anita Annet Among, benefited from the proceeds.

Over 60% of people in Karamoja live in poverty and many suffer from the devastating impacts of drought and insecurity.

Deputy Foreign Secretary, Andrew Mitchell, said:

The actions of these individuals, in taking aid from those who need it most, and keeping the proceeds, is corruption at its worst and has no place in society. The Ugandan courts are rightly taking action to crack down on those politicians who seek to line their own pockets at their constituents’ expense.  Today the UK is sending a clear message to those who think benefiting at the expense of others is acceptable. Corruption has consequences and you will be held responsible.

 The three individuals sanctioned:

  • Anita Annet Among, who has been the Speaker of the Parliament of Uganda since 2022.
  • Mary Goretti Kitutu, who was the Minister for Karamoja Affairs between 2021 and 2024.
  • Agnes Nandutu, who was the State Minister for Karamoja Affairs between 2021 and 2024.

These measures follow previous UK sanctions under the Global Anti-Corruption sanctions regime , which has targeted individuals involved in serious corruption cases across the world, including Bulgaria, Lebanon, Moldova, Russia, South Africa, South Sudan, and Venezuela.

Since its introduction in April 2021, the UK has introduced sanctions on 42 individuals and entities under this regime globally to combat corruption across the world.

An asset freeze prevents any UK citizen, or any business in the UK, from dealing with any funds or economic resources which are owned, held or controlled by the designated person and which are held in the UK. It will also prevent funds or economic resources being provided to or for the benefit of the designated person or entity

A travel ban means that the designated person is an excluded person under section 8B of the Immigration Act 1971, and must be refused leave to enter or to remain in the United Kingdom (any leave given to a person who is an excluded person is invalid).

Under the UK’s Global Anti-Corruption sanctions regulations 2021, individuals and entities anywhere in the world can be sanctioned for their involvement in bribery or misappropriation of property involving a foreign public official.

This could include those who facilitate, profit from or try to cover up serious corruption, as well as making efforts to prevent authorities from carrying out justice for these actions.

UK Aid was not involved in the Ugandan Government project.
