Madeira, portugal.

Madeira is a Portuguese archipelago situated in the north of the Atlantic Ocean, some 500 miles southwest of Portugal itself and 360 miles off the coast of North Africa (a little over 200 miles north of the Canary Islands).

Its prime location in the Atlantic as well as being close to Africa provides a year-long climate that is warm and sunny. This also means there is plenty of big game fish to be found in the saltwater ocean of the Atlantic.

The port of Funchal is just one of the many fine ports found on the island, all perfect for chartering a boat for some deep-sea fishing. Blue Marlin and Hammerhead sharks are a few of the big game species to be found around the island.

While most of the chartered boats will offer a fine selection of tackle including appropriate deep sea fishing gear for veteran sport fishermen wanting to catch the best the sea has to offer. In addition to being known for their fine fishing, the islands are also world-famous for their Madeira wine .

 River Soca, Slovenia

Europe is home to many new members, and Slovenia is a fine example of this, with its addition to the Union in 2004. This has opened the doors to some premier freshwater spots found in the country, none of which are more spectacular than the River Soca.

The waters are teeming with both brown and rainbow trout, along with grayling. This Alpine river is also home to a very rare fish found only in the upper course of the river – the Marble Trout. 

They can reach weights of over 10lbs and are thought to be endangered, making them an incredibly rare catch. As the river has both deep and shallow estuaries, you can take a variety of tackle. Various sizes of rods can be used here depending on which sections of the river you are fishing. You can find locally sourced trout flies for your line too, as the region caters to fishermen who enjoy the technique.

You can walk almost the length of the river, and the scenery is truly awe-inspiring. A little more of an obscure location but definitely worth the journey!

Les Quis, France

France is known for its many lakes packed with Carp. Les Quis is the perfect location for Carp fishing , made up of four lakes with perfect conditions for different types of fishing, including open water and the shores of the surrounding land.

As a specially designed fishing location, this has a quiet and relaxed atmosphere, featuring fishermen from around the globe, all here for some of the best  Carp fishing in France .

Each of the four lakes has the perfect conditions for casting lines, and there are bailiffs and a lodge. This means you can exchange tips and stories with your fellow anglers as well as relax after a few hours around the lakes.

You will need to bring your own tackle, but the bait is sold on-site. Boilies are very popular for the Carp in the area and the perfect bait for anyone visiting. Simple rigs are advised for this area. A minimum of 2.5oz weights are recommended and barbless hooks must be used for the protection of the fish – 8”s and 6”s are advised, as is a 6ft Zig Rig .

Anglesey, United Kingdom

Anglesey is an island in Northern Wales, and it has a rich variety of fishing locations. Seawater fishing can be done all around the coast as well as boat charters that will take you far out to the Irish Sea. Those visiting in May and June can expect to find the likes of Herring, Pollock, Mackerel, and Coalfish.

The Llyn Y Gors area, situated in Anglesey, is home to seven lakes and the perfect place for freshwater fishing – it’s regularly nominated as one of the ten best fishing spots in the UK. You can select a lake in which to fish based on your level of experience.

Match Lake with its 2 1/2 acres is ideal for pole fishermen and is known to house some large fish, with species such as carp and perch all found here.

The Karpium , another popular lake for carp anglers with specimens in the 10-20lbs range common, is the deepest of the lakes here with depths up to 14ft. Pleasure Lake and Reed Lake are two other standouts in the Llyn Y Gors region producing big catches of Perch, Tench, and carp from 2 – 10 lbs on average.

  Donegal Bay, Ireland

Fishing in Ireland offers some of the best angling conditions in all of Europe. Donegal Bay is one area in particular where anglers come in their droves, thanks to the catch found on the shores, rivers and deep-sea waters of the region, located in North West Ireland.

It has dozens of perfect spots within a large area, and you really are spoiled for choice here. Trabane is a spot tucked away along the coast of the bay; you can fish at the open mouth of the streams as well as the shores of the beaches. Species found here include Dogfish and mackerel.

Hiring a charter boat, you can check out some fine species from the sea, including Pollock , Cod, Pouting (belonging to the cod family), giant Bluefin Tuna and even the odd Blue Shark!

1. River Tiber, Italy

All roads lead to Rome, as the saying goes, and if you follow the river Tiber, it will eventually bring you right into the Eternal City. With its source in the Apennines, the Tiber begins its journey through central Italy, crossing Tuscany, and winding through Rome,  before greeting the sea some 400 km from the mountains.

The Tiber is most famous for its huge population of Brown trout of all shapes and sizes. The biggest specimens are reported to be more than 100 cm long and can reach a weight of 10 kg.

Besides trout, graylings also represent a big part of the ecosystem and are a joy for all grayling lovers, since the fish can’t be found in every river, at least not in such an abundance.

The season begins in April, leading to the first peak in August/September. With certain stretches of the river being exclusively meant for catch-and-release fly fishermen, Tiber is a perfect choice when visiting Italy.

2. River Soča, Slovenia

Soča River is believed to be one of the most beautiful rivers in the world, offering the best fly fishing in Slovenia, possibly even in Europe! Sourcing in the Slovenian Alps, it runs through the Soča Valley, surrounded by mountains and the untouched nature of the Julian Alps, crosses the border into Italy, and concludes its 130-km-long journey in the Adriatic Sea.

The season begins in April and depends on the amount of snow melting in the mountains. May is usually a great month for fishing. During September and October, the fishing season reaches its peak and is most busy with fly fishermen.

3. River Traun, Austria

River Traun is another beauty from a collection of  Alpine rivers that certainly ranks high in the top fly-fishing rivers in Europe. It sources in the Northern Alps, runs through the city of Traun, and eventually ends its 150km long journey by connecting to the Danube river at the city of Linz.

The Traun River is home to Brown trout, Rainbow trout, Brook trout, Grayling, and even some big specimens of Lake trout. With the most common catch being the Rainbow, it is not uncommon for a Grayling of over 50 cm to grab your fly.

River Wye is one of the most popular fly fishing destinations in the UK. A length of almost 250 km,  it is one of the longest rivers on the Island, its source being in Wales and its mouth in the Severn Estuary.

There are many places to wet a line along the Wye since it’s very clean and its fish population is plentiful.

Apart from the most wanted and recognizable fish in the river, Atlantic Salmon, it doesn’t lack other fish species such as Chub, Trout, and Barbel, the latter being most popular for using a ground bait technique.

Salmon is the main target for fly fishermen in the lower parts of the Wye Valley. The season lasts from 3 March to 17 October with its peak in spring when salmon migrate up the river. Nowadays, the biggest specimens caught can weigh up to 16 kg, but a long-standing record from the previous century stands at a staggering 27 kg!

5. Hintersee Lake, Germany

Let’s conclude the list of our best European fly fishing destinations with this beautiful lake in Germany. Hintersee is located in the German Alps, near the city of Marsau near the Berchtesgaden National Park.

It is around 20 hectares in size with shallow areas alternating with deep pools, making it one of the best and most attractive fly-fishing lakes in Europe.

Hintersee is home to a dense population of Brown trout, with some beautiful Brook trout adding to the lake’s diverse mix. With a special stocking plan from the Fishing Club, the fish are constantly growing in numbers. Today, with an abundance of natural food, the local trout are reaching lengths of over 80 cm.

The season starts at the beginning of May and lasts until October. Fishing is possible from the shore, or for those who want more peace, especially in the summer months, fishing from a boat is also a superb option.

6. Langa River, Iceland

The Langa River in Iceland is a gem for fly fishers, with its season stretching from late June to September. It’s especially known for its Atlantic salmon, which are drawn to the river’s 100 named pools that dot its 36-kilometer stretch.

The river’s clear waters flow over volcanic bedrock, creating a mix of falls, deep pools, and fast runs that challenge anglers to adapt their techniques.

Fly fishing here is strictly fly-only, with a strong emphasis on catch-and-release for salmon, reflecting Iceland’s commitment to sustainable fishing practices.

Local guides are key to unlocking the Langa’s potential, offering insights into the river’s patterns and the best techniques to use.

The accommodations near the river range from simple lodges to more upscale retreats, all focused on giving anglers quick access to the river’s best spots.

7. Thurso River, Scotland

Best Places To Fish In Europe

The options for the best fishing in Europe are endless. It is one of the most popular hobbies in Europe and you will never be very far from a fisherman throwing a line. That being said, the best fishing, as always, is found in remote places and these are the places we are going to cover.

In this article, we are going to focus mainly on fly fishing and carp fishing since they are the most popular. I will, however, drop in a couple of wild cards outside of these, just to show off the diversity and maybe help you change it up a bit for your next trip.

Fly Fishing

The Slovenian Alps are as beautiful as a mountain range can get. Stunning protected forests surround uncrowded lush crystal blue rivers that flow down the mountains into the Adriatic and Black Sea drainage basin.

Fly fishing in Slovenia dates back over 100 years and they have managed and protected their rivers exceptionally well. The rivers here are one of the only places in the world to hold marble trout. These are extremely large predators as far as trout go and are very shy at the same time. They will tend to hide under boulders, out of sight so that they can ambush their prey. This makes them hard to catch and puts them high up on everyone’s bucket list of fish to conquer. Marble trout aren’t the only fish around though. There are record grayling, brown, rainbow and brook trout in these breath-taking rivers.

Slovenia is very well set-up for fly fishing, with beautiful lodges and excellent guides found easily online. Some of the best rivers to fish are the Soca and the Sava, both are host to marble trout and all the other species. There are a lot more rivers to fish and explore though, so don’t get stuck on just those two. The season for trout fishing in Solvenia is March to November.

Kola Peninsula, Russia

Atlantic Salmon populations are getting smaller and smaller. You will have felt this effect if you have been fishing for them in the UK, and for a good chance of catching one, you need to look further.

Russia’s Kola Peninsula is your best bet. Year upon year their salmon return and this is thanks to a lack of fishing pressure in the ocean they go back to after they have spawned in the rivers. They migrate to the white sea, which is full of food so they don’t have to make it to the Atlantic where they might get caught by trawlers. The white sea is also covered with ice most of the year, making it very hard for commercial fisherman to get to.

This means huge runs of salmon coming up the river which increases your chances of catching them by a long way. One of the most famous rivers is the Ponoi and anglers can average 30-40 fish a week.

The Kola Peninsula has a range of excellent lodges and guides but is only accessible by helicopter, that is how remote it is. The rivers are protected, so are the salmon and are all encased in ‘The Atlantic Salmon Reserve’. This is undoubtedly some of the best Atlantic salmon fishing in the world and the season runs from May through to the end of October.

Iceland is a fly fishing mecca and its environment is second to none. It is a bit like being on the moon, a dramatic bouldery appearance with huge rocky features, beautiful rivers and lakes. You really feel like you have taken a step back in time when you are surrounded by such stunning beauty in secluded peace, casting a line on a river or lake full of fish.

Iceland takes its fishing seriously and they protect it very well. On arrival, your fishing kit is disinfected at the airport before you are allowed to head off into the wilderness, that’s how seriously they take it. It has excellent runs of Atlantic salmon and sea trout as well as rivers and lakes full of brown trout, rainbow trout and arctic char. In fact, the biggest brown trout in the world can be found in Lake Thingvellir, Iceland’s largest lake, but they are not easy to catch.

Iceland is extremely well set up for fishing, with private guides and lodges available all over the country. The fishing season runs from May through to the end of October.

Carp Fishing

Heaven Lake, Hungary

Heaven Lake is found on the north-east side of Hungary, just 10km from Nyíregyháza. This stunning piece of water covers an area of 59 acres, is 40 years old and surrounded by beautiful scenery. The lake itself has been designed for carp fishing and nothing else. 25,000 carp have been put into this lake, all ranging from 20-40lbs in size. That is a lot of big fish for you to put a bait in front of and the record to date is 64lbs. The owners are sure there are larger specimens in there, they just haven’t been caught yet.

The place is set up for carp fisherman and stunning lakeside cabin accommodation and guides can be booked very easily online. The season runs from April through to the end of October.

River Ebro, Spain

The River Ebro begins at a large dam just above Mequinenza in north-east Spain, a few hours drive from Barcelona and is one of Spain’s most famous rivers, running a distance of 580 miles. The town of Caspè is located in the province of Zaragoza and is an excellent place to stay while fishing the river. The area is rich in culture and is famous for the vineyards that surround it along with the beautiful countryside.

The river is very famous for its catfish but one little known fact is that in the upper reaches, the common carp fishing is truly second to none. You can see hundreds of carp rolling, crashing and feeding right in the margins, enough to make any carp anglers heart jump. If you are in to river fishing for carp, it is truly worth a visit. Guides and accommodation near the river are easy to find and the season runs all year with prime time being May to September.

Island Lake, Hungary

Island lake, like many lakes in Hungary has been designed with carp fishermen in mind. The lake is dotted with islands, hence its name, in order to give every fisherman a sense of privacy. You can fish your own spot and know no one is going to disturb your swims. The lake is very quiet, with only 16 swims to offer, meaning you will be able to fish in peace.

The lake holds common carp between 25-45lbs on average and there a few specimens that will reach the over 60lb mark. Grass carp and sturgeon are also swimming in these waters and have been caught up to 55lb. That’s a lot of big fish in one private lake, sounds out of this world, doesn’t it.

Island Lake is set up with lakeside cabins for your accommodation and you swim includes a boat with an outboard, so you can fish those hard to reach places. All the details are easily found online and the season runs from April to October.

General Fishing

The Coast Of Portugal

Portugal is in many ways very uniquely located with the whole coastline one big fishing spot. The continental shelf is not far, in nautical terms, off the coast and brings with it a huge variety of fish. You can find anything from large fish like Tuna and even sharks feasting on the plethora of smaller fish in the shallower coastal waters.

In the shallow waters, you can find anything from swordfish and bass to bream and sardines. And sometimes even octopus, which you will also often see on the menu in places like Spain with their specialty restaurants.

Quite a few of the more touristy locations like the Algarve will have easy to find some of the best fishing boats, while further up the coast, and even near Porto, there is also abundant fishing but perhaps just not as many tourist operations to choose from.

The Canary Islands

The Canary Islands, are a Spanish archipelago found just off the coast of north-west Africa. They are famous for their black and white sand beaches, diving, surfing and offshore fishing. These islands are volcanic, meaning they rose up from the ocean floor a long time ago and therefore have very deep drop-offs very close to shore. You can find depths of 1000 metres within minutes of leaving the dock and it is this dramatic depth change that makes them so fishy.

There are a lot of offshore species available and some are residents, like wahoo and broadbill swordfish. Others are migratory; blue marlin, white marlin and Bluefin tuna all migrate through the waters of the Canary Islands and the best time to catch them is between May and September when large schools of baitfish arrive in the rich warm waters.

Lofoten Islands, Norway

Another great option for fishing, especially if you are stuck for destinations in winter, is the Lofoten Islands. They were in many ways built on the fishing industry, cod specifically.

And every Winter season between February and April you can partake in a little cod fishing yourself. You can join one of the many fishermen who make it their living doing this, and get to experience the true life of a fisherman!

It is also a stunning location to visit in and of itself, and you can spend some time exploring or just sitting outside late at night awaiting the Northern Lights, should they choose to show up while you are there!

 Summing Up

Europe has some of the best fly fishing and carp fishing in the world, as well as some great offshore fishing. As long as you are prepared to make the journey, you will find yourself dropping into a little piece of fishing nirvana, all set up and well managed, so you can enjoy your fishing and not have to worry about anything else.

The trips do run a little expensive and this can be a slight hindrance, especially if you are a young angler. The ‘do it yourself’ option is always there for public waters, I have done it my self in Slovenia and Iceland. Simply hire a car, take a tent, and camp and fish your way around the country booking days on the rivers you can afford. If you are on a budget, you may not want to have to pay for a guide, but do it for just 1 day and try to get all the inside knowledge you might need for your trip.

Either way, now you are armed with some options for great fishing in Europe, no matter which of these fishing destinations you choose!

Nordic fly fishing in Iceland

As European destinations go, Iceland has some of the very best fly fishing rivers to offer. This is a country universally known for its breathtaking skies and awe-inspiring scenery, making it the perfect place to cast your line. One of our favourite Icelandic fly fishing locations is the renowned Langa River . As one of the best fly fishing rivers in Europe, this has been a historically popular destination for English fly anglers since the late 1800s, and with good reason.

As is so typical in Iceland, the upper reaches flow through lava fields, over falls, with small, perfectly designed salmon pools. Its final reaches are about as dramatic and picturesque as you can hope for, with the river dropping into the sea after the famous Crocodile pool.

The Langa has quite rightly earned its reputation as one of the most productive salmon rivers in the world. With just shy of 100 named pools spread over 36 km, this is a dream location for enjoying your favourite sport. Cast your rod from the banks or wade in the glacial clear waters, all while soaking up the glorious scenery in what is an undeniably stunning part of Europe.

Soak up the highland views while fly fishing in Scotland

A must see location with rod and without, Scotland offers one of the very best fly fishing experiences in Europe, if not in the world. After all, nothing says angling history quite like the Scottish highlands.

With an 11 month long season, incredibly diverse rivers and runs, beautiful surroundings and rich wildlife, anglers come from all over the world for the fly fishing trip of a lifetime.

The Scottish views are certainly bonnie and the fly fishing opportunities are pretty spectacular too. Scotland is one of the world’s premier Atlantic Salmon fly fishing destinations, but there’s more to be caught in this fishing paradise. With vast lochs offering up huge Pike and Wild Brown Trout in abundance, Grayling, Rainbow and Sea Trout are also extremely popular with visiting fly fishers.

The highlight of Scottish fly fishing is the beautiful and prolific Thurso River. Located in Caithness in the far north of the Scottish Highlands, Thurso is rightly regarded as one of Scotland’s premier Atlantic salmon rivers. The river flows for 26 miles or 41km from its source, above Loch More, to Thurso Bay where it meets the Atlantic.

Enjoying a long and productive season, the Thurso River is a particular favourite with anglers through the spring and early summer months, with the opportunity to make a catch never far away. You don’t need to worry about the river becoming too busy either, as a limit on numbers gives everyone a chance to fish all of the river in comfort.

With record catches being enjoyed over the last few years, the Thurso River and the fishing waters of Scotland in general are the ideal destination for those looking for a sense of adventure while keeping close to home.

Clear water fly fishing in Norway

For fly fishers the world over, Norway and its legendary salmon are quite simply the stuff of dreams. Set against an enchanting backdrop of mountains, glaciers and fjords, Norway’s epic and exclusive rivers are home to some of the largest, hardest fighting Atlantic salmon on the planet. The promise of a fish of a lifetime – indeed of several lifetimes – is what brings anglers back year after year.

If that sounds too good to miss, then you will want to add the must-see location of the river Åelva to your fly fishing holiday itinerary. This is Norway’s famous ‘secret river’ which is just too good not to share.

Its tall waterfalls mean the prolific runs are concentrated for much of the season. Indeed, one section of the Åelva – below the prolific Bjalfossen stretch – is reputedly the most salmon-dense stretch of river in all of Europe, with specimens surpassing 40lbs. With its incredibly clear waters, the Åelva is the perfect location for fishing by sight, and you will be hard-pushed to miss the large Norwegian Atlantic salmon within its depths.

One aspect of fishing at Åelva which is often overlooked is the awesome sea trout fishing that can be experienced from late July onwards. One of the best fly fishing rivers in Europe, the sea trout here average around 3lbs, however many fish weighing double figures are caught frequently. The most recent record was 25lb, so your challenge for exceeding that weighty catch is all set.

There is something special about this part of Scandinavia aside from the fly fishing alone, with its mountains, glaciers and deep coastal fjords. The perfect place for outdoor adventures, you will have a myriad of beautiful backdrops to enjoy your favourite pass-time.

Fly fishing in stunning Sweden

Our beautiful home of Sweden features a dramatic landscape of forests, lakes, mountains and mighty rivers, which are primarily home to large and aggressive salmon. These awesome stretches of water test the limits and capabilities of all levels of angler who are lucky enough to fish them, but they return again and again thanks to the very real prospect of fighting and landing incredible trophy fish.

Blessed with the perfect water, the Swedes are determined to keep it that way, with stringent protections in place, all driven by our national passion to preserve the wild. After all, this is a country that boasts in the region of 100,000 lakes, some with their own weather systems, offering the most idyllic spots for catching salmon, trout or Arctic char.

The famous Kengis Bruk beat is located on the Torne river. This is a classic salmon fishing beat that annually delivers great catch results, throughout the short but intense season. Opening for fishing on the second full week of June and closing on the last day of August, there are fresh fish running all season. The Torne river’s average weight for fly caught salmon is 15-18lbs, while many fish weighing 20lbs or more are common. Fish running into the 30 – 40lbs class are caught every year. In 2015, local angler Kristian Stridsman landed a monster fish of 43.7lbs after a short but intense 15-minute battle in the boat pool below the rapids. A battle worth having, to bring home such a catch.

Your catch will no doubt depend on where you land on Sweden’s compass, but whether you are on the lake, river or coastline there is some fantastic fishing to be enjoyed.

We may be biased, but anglers the world over agree with us – Sweden really is a piece of fly fishing paradise.

Where is the best salmon fishing in Europe?

Norway is widely regarded as the best place for fly fishing salmon in the world. The river Åelva is reputedly the most salmon-dense stretch of river in all of Europe, with specimens surpassing 40lbs. So if you are looking for your next big catch, there’s nowhere better to try your luck than this beautiful part of Scandinavia.

Iceland is also one of the best salmon fishing destinations – and one of our favourites – for all of the reasons mentioned above and a whole lot more that is just waiting for you to discover and explore.

Moscow River

Moskva river has the form of a snake and is the main waterway of Moscow, consisting of a cascade of reservoirs. Within the city, Moskva river is 80 km long, 120 m - 200 m wide and up to 14 m deep. The narrowest part of the river is the Kremlin area in the city center, and the most extensive is around the Luzhniki Stadium in the south. 

Bridges in Moscow

Undoubtedly, bridges and embankments are among the most scenic spots and main attractions of Moscow. Plus, they are so romantic.

• Bolshoy Kamenny Bridge –  Great Stone Bridge –  is the main bridge of Moscow . The first stone bridge was constructed here in the 17th century.
• Patriarshy Bridge  is one of the youngest pedestrian bridges, built in 2004. The bridge connects the iconic Christ the Saviour Cathedral with funky Bersenevskaya embankment, extremely popular place among locals for its trendy art galleries, cafes and panoramic views. Patriarshy Bridge used to be a shooting location for ex-Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's New Year speech to the nation.
• Borodinsky Bridge,  erected in honor of the 100th anniversary of the glorious victory in the Battle of Borodino (which every Russian kid knows about), a fierce legendary battle during the Russo-French war of 1812.
• Bagration Bridge  one of the  pedestrian bridges with most picturesque views of the Moskva River with its numerous upper-level observation platforms. The bridge was erected to celebrate the 850th anniversary of Moscow city in 1997.
• Krymsky Bridge  used to be in Top 5 Europe’s longest bridges some 100 years ago. The bridge got its name after the ancient Krymsky ford which Crimean Tartars used to invade Moscow in the 16 th  century.

Embankments of Moscow

Moscow river boats 37 embankments, the most popular being Kremlevskaya, Sofiyskaya, Pushkinskaya, Vorobyovskaya and Kolomenskaya.

You can get the most spectacular views of the Kremlin from  Kremlevskaya and Sofiyskaya embankments.

• Pushkinkaya embankment  is the most romantic in Moscow. It meanders along Gorky Park and Neskuchnyi garden and is rich for all kinds of entertainment as well as cozy nooks, including Olivkovy beach, the famous Zeleny theater as well as a pier for river cruisers.
• Vorobyevskaya embankment  is part of Sparrow Hills nature reserve. This place opens a beautiful panorama of the river and city from the observation deck and is considered to be the place for taking serious decisions in life.
• Embankment in Kolomenskoye  Museum-Reserve has a special charm due to its peculiar geographical relief. The boat trip around Kolomenskoye would be the most peaceful in your life.
• Taras Shevchenko embankment  is popular among photographers for its modern Moscow City skyscrapers. Highly recommended for your night boat trip.
• Embankments of Moscow are the pride of the capital. A distinctive feature of each of the promenades is its architecture and beautiful views. In addition, almost all the embankments of Moscow have a rich history and a lot of notable buildings.

Different epochs

Taking a walk along the Moskva River by boat, you will witness the architecture of Moscow from different eras and styles. Archaeological studies indicate that already in the XI century there stood a fortified settlement on Borovitsky hill, which is now called the Kremlin. Little fortress could not accommodate all the residents of the rapidly growing city, and the Grand Duke ordered the construction of a new Kremlin, larger than the former.

Boat trip around Kolomenskoe Park

Moscow river boat trip starts from the pier Klenovy (Maple) Boulevard and provides reat views of Nicholas Perervinsky monastery.

Nicholas Perervinsky monastery was founded at the time of the Battle of Kulikov (1380). The monastery, got its name from the surrounding area – “Pererva”, which can be translated like “tear off” and because of the location –  here it abruptly changed its course, turning to Kolomna, standing on the opposite bank.

Nowadays Kolomenskoye is State Art, Historical, Architectural and Natural Landscape Museum-Reserve, which doors are open to everyone who wants to get in touch with the ancient history of Russia.

Take a break from the big city hustle in the shady parks and gardens of the Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve. Don’t miss a wonderful Church of the Ascension and Tsar Alexey’s Palace in Kolomenskoye!

Monasteries and temples

• Novospassky Monastery
• Founded in the 13th century on the site where now is located the Danilovsky monastery. After a few decades, in 1330, Ivan Kalita moved the monastery onto the Borovitskii hill of the Kremlin. However, in the 15th century, Spassky Monastery again moved, this time to a more spacious place on Krasnoholmskaya waterfront.
• Church of St. Nicholas in Zayaitskom
• Erected in the middle of the XVIII century in baroque style. The building survived after the 1812 fire, but the utensils were destoyed. Parishioners collected donations and restored the temple on their own. In Soviet times, it was closed and re-opened only in 1992.
• Cathedral of Christ the Savior
• The church was originally erected in honor of the victory over Napoleon and was being under construction for long 44 years. Notoriously demolished in 1937 to be a giant swimming pool under open sky. The current building was constructed in 1990s. It is the tallest and one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world.
• The temple was built in 1679-82, during the reign of Tsar Fedor Alekseevich, in late Muscovite Baroque style and can be characterized as bonfire temple. Each gable is a symbol of a heavenly fire.
• Novodevichy Convent
• The most famous concent and monastery in Moscow, presumably founded in 1524. Novodevichy’s status has always been high among other monasteries, it was in this monastery where the women of the royal blood, the wives of Tsars and local rulers of Moscow were kept in prison as nuns.
• St. Andrew’s church  (male acts as Compound Patriarch of Moscow)
• St. Andrew’s church stands right on the slopes of the Sparrow Hills, on the way down to the Moskva River, on the territory of the Nature Reserve “Sparrow Hills”. The monastery is small in size but is very cozy. It’s situated in a quiet courtyard surrounded by temples, fruit trees and flowers.

Get a taste of outdoor adventure while hiking.

Monte Palace houses a huge collection of exotic plants from all over the world. The tropical gardens are also home to gorgeous birds like swans, flamingos, peacocks, and chickens.

From its beautiful gardens to its collection of ceramic tiles and precious gemstones, this place feels like a hidden oasis in the midst of the city.

If you're looking for an adrenaline rush, check out the Cabo Girão skywalk.

If there's something I love as much as the outdoors, it's a unique experience . So when I heard of Cabo Girão, the highest sea cliff in Europe , I knew I had to visit.

The top of the cliff features a unique glass-floored skywalk suspended over 1,900 feet above sea level. When standing on the glass, I got unmatched views of Madeira's rugged coastline and the crashing waves underneath.

When in Madeira, skip the beer and stick to its famous wine.

In addition to being the name of the name of the island, Madeira is also a type of fortified wine. Needless to say, you can't leave without visiting a vineyard to learn more about the island's winemaking heritage.

I highly recommend booking a guided tour with a tasting to see the grapes firsthand and gain insights into the intricate aging process that gives these wines unique flavors.

Take a trip to the local market.

Whenever I visit a new city or country, I like to stop at the local farmers market . In Madeira, I visited the Mercado dos Lavradores, which is located in the heart of Funchal.

It was a great opportunity to sample local delicacies while buying souvenirs from local craftsmen.

For a glimpse into everyday life, don’t skip a visit to the Camara da Lobos fishing village.

Away from the city center and less frequented by tourists , the picturesque fishing village of Camara da Lobos offers a slice of authentic island life.

Grab a poncha, a local Madeira cocktail, and admire the dozens of art murals that surround the community, all while enjoying the colorful harbor and fishermen unloading their catch of the day.

Europe is a continent best known for amazing public transportation. Seriously, the rail network and bus connections over there put the US to shame. However, this limits your trip, as not every site or adorable town or viewpoint is located conveniently on the train line or near a bus stop. So, we’ve rounded up 20 of the best road trips around Europe.

Romantic Road, Germany

This route weaves through two southern provinces, Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg,  and follows an old Roman road. You’ll enjoy stunning views in the Bavarian Alps, storybook castles like Neuschwanstein, and medieval towns like Rothenburg de Tauber.

Alsace Wine Route, France

One of the original wine routes in France, Alsace is ideal throughout the year. You’ll stop at numerous wineries between Mulhouse and Strasbourg. Additionally, many other fairytale villages, such as Colmar and Riquewihr, are included.

Istria Peninsula, Croatia

Istria is one of the few parts of Croatia that can still be considered a true hidden gem, as the masses have yet to descend. The beaches, wineries, hilltop towns, and olive oil producers are best visited via car. Base yourself in Pula or Rovinj and take day trips!

The Northwest Coast, France

Brittany and Normandy are some of the most underrated coastal regions in Europe. White sand beaches and turquoise waters await, with none of the crowds of the south. Start in Rennes and head west to Dinan, Saint-Malo, and Dinard. Then head north to Cancale and before stopping at the straight-from-Disney Mont St Michel. End your trip at the D-Day beaches.

Wild Atlantic Way, Ireland

This 1,600-mile route would be ambitious to complete on a single trip. It stretches from Kinsale in the south along the west coast all the way to Malin Head. Most people complete one or two sections at a time.

Southern Albania

Thanks to electric blue waters and stunning cliffs, Albania has blown up on social media in recent years. And all those stunning beaches you see on Instagram? They’re located in the southern part of the country. So rent a car in Tirana and head to Vlorë, then continue south with stops in Dhërmi, Himarë, Sarandë, and Ksamil.

Dalmatia Coast & Montenegrin Coast, Croatia/Montenegro

Travelers flock to southern Croatia for a reason: it’s amazing. Rent a car in Split or Dubrovnik, take a ferry to an island, check out Zadar and Cavat, and then head to Montenegro. Must-sees in this country include Herceg Novi, Kotor, and Budva.

The Amalfi Coast, Italy

It would be almost criminal to leave Italy’s most iconic stretch of coast off this list. And it’s best explored by car if you can stomach the narrow roads and occasional street cliffside drop-offs. Start in Salerno and head to the town of Amalfi before heading to Ravello, Positano, and Sorrento.

Villages de Caractère Drôme/Ardèche, France

These two neighboring regions in central-southern France are home to many “Villages de Caractère” (basically an official title designating them as cute), castles, wineries, and hikes. Rent a car in Valence or Montélimar, then head west to Aubenas, the entry point for the Regional Ardche Park. Return to the Drôme via Vallon Pont d’Arc and make sure to hike among the natural arches. Then check out Alba (Roman ruins), Grignan, and Nyons.

Benelux, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg

These three small Western European countries are best covered in a vehicle. Fly into Amsterdam and pick up a car. Explore the Netherlands before continuing south to Belgium and ending in Luxembourg.

Northern Lakes, Italy

Start in Milan and hit up all the major lakes in northern Italy, from glamorous Lake Como to less pretentious but still lovely Lake Garda and Lake Maggiore, plus plenty of other small ones. You’ll delight in the Italian mountain scenery!

West Coast, Sweden

Sweden’s west coast is a beautiful part of the country, with amazing cities such as Malmo and Gothenburg. However, plenty of smaller towns, beaches, and lakes await you in this epic part of the country.

Cotswold, UK

This storybook part of the United Kingdom is full of adorable thatched cottages, scenic walking routes, and villages plucked from a Miss Marple episode. The towns are best explored with a car but can also be walked between if you’re keen on some hiking!

Ring Road, Iceland

The Ring Road is a well-trodden (or, in this case, driven) tourist route for a reason. You’ll hit up all the best sites in the country: cascading waterfalls, glacier beaches, and volcanic landscapes. Just be prepared to share the roads with lots of other tourists!

Transfăgărășan Highway, Romania

This mountain route through the Carpathian Mountains is breathtaking at every turn. Just be mindful of the speed limit, as you’ll need to go slow at many points due to curves and landscape preservation.

Basque Country, Spain and France

This unique part of both countries is perfect for those looking for something different. Begin in Bilbao and drive north with stops in San Sebastian, the Pyrenees Mountains, and Bordeaux. As a bonus, plenty of amazing wine is available to sample along the way (once you’ve finished driving for the day, of course.)

Atlantic Road, Norway

This beautiful drive along the Atlantic Ocean in Norway is great if you’re not looking for a major road trip. It’s only a few miles long but crosses bridges with the ocean on either side and has amazing views of fjords and mountains.

The Peloponnese Peninsula, Greece

Greece is often thought of as a sea-oriented trip, thanks to the ease of island-hopping via ferry. However, if you want to explore the mainland, a car is the easiest way to get around, especially the historic Peloponnese Peninsula. Home to Nafplio, Sparta, and numerous ancient sites, it’s the ideal place for a road trip.

European Alps, Austria, Switzerland, and France

This route is ideal for mountain lovers, whether you want to complete it in the winter and ski along the way or wait until summer to hike your way through it. Start in Vienna and grab a rental car, then head west to Salzburg, Austria’s gateway to the Alps. Continue to Innsbruck before crossing into Switzerland and, finally, France.

Wine Country to the Med, Slovenia

Slovenia is a great country for a road trip as it is compact but diverse in its small area. Start in Maribor in the east before heading west to Lake Bled and Lake Bohinj. Spend a few days hiking in Triglav Nation Park before turning south to Piran on the coast. Then return to the capital, Ljubljana, to end your trip!
