Iceland is a natural wonder and this tour provided us with the opportunity to experience it.
We had a super great trip through Iceland. We saw a lot, even more than the tour included. You can always get in touch with the tour operator, ask questions and rebook booked activities, for example. Everything went smoothly. As we were unable to redeem an activity due to organizational reasons, we were informed immediately and got our money back. So it was worth it.

The 7 Best Tour Companies in Iceland

Kirkjufell mountain in Iceland under the Northern Lights

Iceland is an utterly unique country, with glaciers varying in color from white to blue to gray, waterfalls the size of skyscrapers plummeting down sheer rock cliffs, and bumpy lava fields covered in moss in every shade of green you can imagine. And you’ll hear fantastical tales from history and folklore from people who still believe that elves might exist.

It’s one of my favorite countries in the world, one I fell in love with the first time I visited. I’ve been back multiple times since then during various seasons.

But Iceland isn’t always easy to get around, especially in the off-season, when many bus routes shut down because of weather.

One of the ways to get around that problem is by joining an organized tour. You’ll get to experience places that can be inaccessible without a four-wheel drive, and you’ll have an expert local guide to help make the most of your visit.

I’ve put together a list of my favorite tour companies in Iceland, from short city walking tours to multiday adventure hikes. While joining a tour isn’t cheap (you’ll definitely pay more than if you were to explore the country independently ), you’ll also be able to enjoy your trip without any of the planning while simultaneously benefitting from having a local guide on hand to deepen your experience in this incredible place.

Here’s my list of the best tour companies in Iceland:

1. CityWalk Reykjavik

A free walking tour is always a great way to introduce yourself to a new city, and the guides from CityWalk can give you a good overview of Reykjavik on this two-hour stroll. They run daily tours at 10:30am and 1:30pm, where they show you not only the city’s main attractions, but teach you about Icelandic history as well as share some lesser known and fun facts about Iceland’s capital.

The Reykjavik walking tours have been running since 2014, and the local guides incorporate an element of humor into their tours to make you laugh while you’re exploring. They’ll show you some more overlooked parts of town and also give you some tips for saving money in this expensive country.

Even though it’s technically a free tour, be sure to tip your guide what you think the tour was worth at the end (that’s how they earn a living).

2. Intrepid

Intrepid is my favorite multi-day tour company. I’ve been on tours with them a number of times in a number of places and always enjoy myself. They keep their groups small and work with local guides, and they don’t rush you from sight to sight.

Intrepid offers a number of options in Iceland, including the classic Ring Road trip (which Intrepid calls their Iceland Discovery Tour), where you circumnavigate the island and get to visit some of the best-known sights, from the glacier lagoon at Jökulsárlón on the south coast to the volcanic lake at Mývatn in the north. They even offer tours that also include Greenland too.

What’s also great is that they offer four different tiers of tour “styles” so that you can choose the level and price that suits your needs. “Basix” is the cheapest option and includes the most basic level accommodation with not many extra inclusions, while “Premium” tours are the most expensive and luxurious, as you’ll stay in 4-star accommodations and have more activities and meals included. “Original” and “Comfort” tour styles are somewhere in between the two.

Intrepid’s Iceland tours start at $1,600 for their 5-day Iceland Express Tour and go up to $7,100 for the nine-day Premium Iceland Tour.

3. Arctic Adventures

The award-winning Arctic Adventures is one of the biggest tour companies in Iceland, offering a huge range of one-day and multi-day tours. They also offer self-driving tours, where they provide you with a rental car, pre-booked accommodation, a detailed itinerary, and the option to join some guided day tours along the way. It’s a great option if you want to remove some of the stress and hassle of planning your own trip, but prefer to travel independently.

Its one-day tour options include all the main Icelandic sightseeing activities, like ice caves, snorkeling, glacier tours, and the popular Golden Circle route to Thingvellir National Park, the Geysir hot springs, and Gullfoss Waterfall. They have multi-day trips as well, including trekking tours where you’ll hike across Iceland’s stunning scenery accompanied by an experienced adventure guide.

Arctic Adventures’ full-day trips range in price from around $140 to $280. Their multi-day trips start at $432 USD for a two-day adventure, to an eight-day tour of the Ring Road for $2,434 USD.

4. Icelandic Mountains Guides

For 25 years, Icelandic Mountain Guides has focused on true adventure travel for very small groups, offering one-day and multi-day tours as well as courses on wilderness first aid and mountaineering if you’re interested in gaining some technical outdoor skills.

Its multi-day tours include more unique routes, like a five-day backpacking trek from Núpsstaðaskógur to Skaftafell, or a ten-day expedition across the Highlands starting from the northern town of Akureyri. They even offer ski touring packages. Prices for multi-day tours range from $542 USD for a two-day tour on the southern coast to $4,032 USD for a nine-day glacier expedition.

It also runs one-day tours to ice caves and glacier walk experiences, among others, leaving from Reykjavík, along with similar one-day adventures on the Sólheimajökull glacier on the south coast if you’re in the area and can meet them there. Day tour prices range from $77 USD for an all-day guided lava hike to $256 USD for a snowmobiling adventure on the south coast.

Icelandic Mountain Guides has a genuine conservation focus and holds a twice-yearly event where guides spend time planting trees. All of its day tours are carbon neutral, with a mission to make its multi-day tours carbon neutral in the future.

5. Iceland Horizon

Iceland Horizon offers a huge variety of single-day tours leaving from Reykjavík, Akureyri, and Lake Mývatn. Tour offerings include everything from the classic Golden Circle route to more adventurous snowmobiling and snowshoeing tours.

They’re a good choice for travelers who want to see the main sights and do fun activities but who don’t have access to their own vehicle. They run their small-group tours (always under 19 people) from a mini-bus (which has Wi-Fi), making it a comfortable way to see the sights without having to bother with renting your own car.

Expect to pay around $140 USD per person for a day trip. They also offer tailor-made tours, where you’ll work together with one of their local guides to create an itinerary just for you (pricing greatly varies based on what you want for your personalized tour).

6. Ride with Locals

Ride with Locals is a motorcycle tour company that takes you to the middle of nowhere on trails you wouldn’t access any other way, meaning you’ll see volcanoes, craters, and mountains that very few visitors to Iceland do, making your Iceland experience particularly unique. Its trips last between three days and a week and generally head inland, rather than hugging the coast like most tours.

The motorcycles are KTM 690R and Husqvarna 701 dual sport bikes, and all guides are really experienced with riding through Iceland’s highlands. Some trips use sleeping bags in mountain huts for accommodations (and include all the meals), while others include hotel stays with breakfast.

Costs range between about $4,000 USD for a three-day trip to $7,400 USD for an advanced seven-day expedition. This includes motorbike hire, fuel, accommodation, and some meals. Tours range in difficulty level (noted on the website), but keep in mind that these are only for experienced motorcyclists.

7. Midgard Adventures

Based in Southern Iceland, Midgard Adventures is a family-owned company that offers all sorts of fun and adventurous tours. Off-roading with jeeps, fat bike tours, hiking, snowmobiling, and glacier walks are all on offer here with tours led by family friends and local guides. They have both single-day tours as well as multi-day tours that stretch from 2-7 days (including seasonally-exclusive tours such as mountain biking the highlands in the summer).

Midgard also has its own hotel in Hvolsöllur that you can base yourself from, complete with restaurant, bar, rooftop hot tub, and a sauna (Hvolsöllur is around 90 minutes southeast of Reykjavik).

Prices start around $265 USD for a day tour. While not cheap, Midgard tours are high-quality and tons of fun. You won’t find the same cookie-cutter experiences here.

BONUS: Get Your Guide

If you can’t find the perfect Iceland tour for your trip above, you’ll undoubtedly be able to find it on GetYourGuide . This tour marketplace allows local tour operators to list their offerings, meaning that there’s a huge variety of tours to choose from here, from food tours in Reykjavik to whale watching tours in Húsavík , to multi-day adventures around the country.

Look for the “GetYourGuide Certified” logo for tours that have been vetted by GetYourGuide themselves, though you can also read reviews from previous tour participants to make sure that you sign up for a quality tour. You can even book admission tickets for attractions (like to the countless hot springs that you’ll undoubtedly be visiting) too.

Known as both the Land of Elves and the Land of Fire and Ice, Iceland is a destination like no other. There’s a lot packed into this island , and joining a tour is a great way to maximize your time and experience here.

From challenging multi-day hikes through some of the most scenic landscapes you’ll ever see, to gently exploring a glacier lagoon by boat or visiting puffin colonies, to wandering the streets of the quirky capital of Reykjavik , there’s an Icelandic tour company for you!

1. Is it safe to travel to Iceland?

Iceland is a very safe place to visit. You’ll find it’s a peaceful country with one of the lowest crime rates in the world. And it’s good to know that Iceland has excellent, modern healthcare services.

As you may already know, Iceland does have active volcanoes but eruptions occur once every 4 years on average. There’s also minor seismic activity on the island, but noticeable earthquakes are rare and the Icelandic Met Office keeps a good eye on these.

Your dedicated, Iceland-based travel consultant will stay on top of these matters, as well as changing weather reports, to keep you safe on your journey. Don’t hesitate to ask the locals for directions or advice either, as Icelanders are used to travellers and tend to be helpful.

For the latest visitor guidance, you can check this Iceland travel update or read our blog: Is Iceland safe to visit ?

2. What language do people speak in Iceland?

Icelandic is the official language of Iceland . It derives from a North Germanic language similar to Old Norse that has changed little since the Viking times. You’ll get by very easily with English in Iceland though, as most locals speak it. Many are multilingual in other Nordic or European languages as well.

If you want to learn some local lingo, then here are some basic words and phrases to practise:

  • Já = Yes
  • Góðan daginn / Góðan dag = Good day
  • Gott kvöld = Good evening
  • Hæ / Halló = Hi / Hello
  • Bless = Goodbye
  • Takk = Thank you

3. What is the best time of year to go to Iceland?

The best time to visit Iceland depends on the attractions, regions and activities you want to experience.

For instance, you’ll have milder temperatures and longer daylight hours in the summer compared to the winter, which means more opportunities to explore.

With better weather, you can access remote regions – like the Westfjords and central highlands – between May and September. The mountain roads here close in winter as driving conditions are too difficult.

This makes Iceland summer tours ideal if you’d like to spend lots of time outdoors, discovering the island’s many natural wonders. It’s also the best time to see wildlife, like puffins and whales, and to enjoy activities like hiking.

On the other hand, if you’re keen to chase the northern lights, you’ll have a better chance of seeing them if you visit Iceland in winter . The reason is that the nights are long between October and April, so you’ll have more hours of darkness to spot the colours of the aurora.

Time your Iceland trip for the winter months, and you’ll also get to soak up landscapes draped in frost and snow. You may wish to discover Iceland at Christmas or New Year to revel in the festive atmosphere.

For more advice on when to go, check out these guides:

  • Best time to visit Iceland
  • Iceland in summer
  • Iceland in winter

4. When and where can you see the northern lights in Iceland?

The best time to take a northern lights tour in Iceland is during the winter season, between October and April. At this time of year, you have a higher chance of spotting the aurora borealis because the nights are dark enough to see the lights shine and flicker.

For the best chance of viewing the aurora borealis, visit secluded areas away from the light pollution of towns and cities. The darker conditions will allow you to make out the colours of the northern lights more vividly.

Read these guides for more information about the aurora borealis:

  • What are the northern lights?
  • How to see the aurora borealis
  • Best times and places to see the northern lights in Iceland

5. How many days do I need to visit Iceland?

There is so much to see and do in Iceland that you should decide your trip duration according to how many days or weeks you have to spare.

For a short break in Iceland, your best bet is to explore Reykjavík and the surroundings. Within 4 days you could visit the capital’s many museums, shops, galleries and restaurants. There are thermal pools to swim in and festive markets at Christmastime.

You could also see top sights like Gullfoss waterfall, Þingvellir National Park, and the Geysir geothermal area, which includes the hot spring Strokkur. These are all part of the Golden Circle driving route in the south. You can experience the Golden Circle on a day trip from the capital, or over the course of a few days.

Or extend your itinerary and see more of South Iceland . In 7 days you’d get to visit black sand beaches, glaciers, and other breathtaking natural attractions that Iceland’s south coast is known for. Don’t miss the chance to bathe in the mineral-rich waters of the Blue Lagoon, an inviting geothermal pool.

Another great option is to visit West Iceland . Enjoy a northern lights adventure in the remote Westfjords, or head to the Snæfellsnes peninsula.

Called “Iceland in miniature”, the Snæfellsnes peninsula is just 90 kilometres (56 miles) long and has a bit of everything. Discover volcanoes, lava fields, waterfalls, hot springs and fishing villages here.

If you have between 10 days and 2 weeks to spare, then you’ll get to see the many beautiful corners of Iceland. As well as the southern and western regions, you can explore East Iceland and visit North Iceland too by travelling the country’s Ring Road.

Venture east to admire fjords and gaze upon the mighty Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, where icebergs float on the blue waters. Continue north to Akureyri and the Lake Mývatn area to marvel at the Krafla volcano, mud pools and craters. You can warm up with a dip in the Mývatn Nature Baths.

Essentially, the more days you have to spend in Iceland then the more you will get to experience. In winter you’ll also increase your chances of spotting the northern lights!

Check out our blog for inspiration on how many days to spend in Iceland .

6. What are the best things to do in Iceland?

Iceland may be small, but it packs a punch with its wild scenery, intriguing culture and mind-boggling natural wonders. Here are some of the top things to do in Iceland :

  • Marvel at waterfalls
  • Hike in national parks
  • Dip in hot springs and pools
  • Hunt for the northern lights
  • Walk along black sand beaches
  • Taste Icelandic cuisine
  • Admire glacier lagoons
  • Venture into ice caves or lava tunnels
  • Learn about Icelandic legends
  • Look for whales and puffins
  • See geothermal wonders and volcanoes
  • Go horse riding

Read more on our blog about the best Iceland tours to add to your itinerary .

7. What’s the best way to travel in Iceland?

The best way to explore Iceland depends on what you wish to do and how flexible you’d like the tours to be.

Iceland self-drive packages are ideal if you want to set the pace and travel independently. On a road trip, you can take your time discovering top sights and explore off the beaten track. You also have more flexible timings and the freedom to go further afield for excursions and restaurants.

Another excellent way to travel is with a knowledgeable guide and a small group of fellow travellers. Nordic Visitor’s escorted group tours of Iceland give you the opportunity to learn from a local. They’ll take you to each attraction and share their knowledge and favourite spots.

Nordic Visitor only organises small minibus tours with a maximum of 16 people. This ensures you have a more relaxed and personal experience compared to large coach trips. This is a popular choice for our many solo guests and for those who don’t feel comfortable driving.

If you want something exclusive and would prefer to travel alone or with friends or family members, then choose from our privately guided tours of Iceland . You’ll have a local guide all to yourselves for a more personal experience.

11. Why use Nordic Visitor instead of booking everything myself?

At Nordic Visitor, we’ll save you time and effort by planning your getaway for you, based on your needs and requests.

When you arrange your trip yourself, you have to carry out all the research and book all parts of your tour separately. If you need to make changes to your itinerary, you have to do all the legwork yourself.

Nordic Visitor takes care of everything on your behalf so you can relax and look forward to your trip.

Our travel experts will design your route, planned in a way that’s both comfortable and convenient. For example, they’ll ensure you don’t cover the same stretch of road twice unnecessarily. They’ll also book you into high-quality accommodation, and share all their insider tips with you.

Fortunately, if you’re arriving from Canada, the United States, United Kingdom, Australia or New Zealand, you will not need a visa to visit Iceland. You must have a valid passport with at least 3 months left before it expires.

If you’re visiting from outside of these countries, you will need to apply for a Schengen visa to enter Iceland. This is a short-stay visa that permits you to travel to Schengen Area member countries for up to 90 days.

Read more about getting to Iceland on our travel guide.

13. What sort of accommodation will I stay in?

Having a clean, comfortable and friendly place to lay your head after an exciting day of exploring Iceland is really important. That’s why we use our in-depth local knowledge to handpick the most suitable accommodation in Iceland for you.

They will happily tailor your tour to suit your tastes and preferences. You may have particular interests, such as northern lights, hiking, photography or wildlife. Perhaps there are certain places that hold special significance to you.

If you’re visiting Iceland with kids , your personal consultant will make sure every part of your itinerary is suitable for the whole family. Or if you’re on a honeymoon or anniversary trip in Iceland , they’ll gladly add romantic touches to make your couples break extra special.

Most of our travel styles are flexible. But bear in mind that small group packages are a little different, as you are on a fixed itinerary for the duration of the guided tour. However, you can add extra nights to the beginning or end of your trip.

15. Can I choose the arrival date?

You can choose from a wide range of arrival dates depending on the package and season you are interested in. All of our tours are available to purchase online, so pick the best date for you from the availability calendar.

If your travel plans have changed and you want to amend your arrival date, contact your travel consultant to rearrange your booking.

16. Will Nordic Visitor book my flights to Iceland?

Your flights to Iceland are not included in our packages. This gives you greater flexibility and allows you to save money by using your airline miles or taking advantage of airfare sales.

17. When should I book my flight tickets?

We recommend that you check flights for timings and dates, but do not purchase them until you’ve booked your Nordic Visitor tour. Once you’ve had a confirmation email from your personal travel consultant, you should then choose and pay for your flights.

Nordic Visitor packages come with daily itineraries and all of your accommodation organised for you. So once you have all of the arrangements confirmed, you can make an informed choice on your flight times. If you have any questions, you can always contact your consultant for advice.

18. What to pack for Iceland?

Here’s our recommended packing list for Iceland :

  • Walking boots or shoes with good grip
  • Waterproof jacket and trousers
  • Insulated jacket
  • Woollen or fleece jumpers

Culture and customs.

Similar to many other parts of Europe , Iceland has rules in place to help preserve its culture and geographic isolation is also a factor in developing and preserving the country’s cultural qualities. Independence, self-sufficiency and a strong work ethic – traits that allowed this northern island to flourish in challenging conditions – continue to be highly valued today.

Icelandic culture and customs are full of myths and legends, many with a connection to Christian and pagan values. Folk tales of elves, gnomes, fairies and trolls still circulate, and whether or not the locals continue telling these to unlock the secrets of the past, or simply in jest, they’re definitely worth listening to. But when news outlets report on road plans being changed to avoid disrupting an elfin church, it’s easy to believe that this unusual country and its magical landscapes are a product of what lies ‘hidden’ in its mysterious depths.

Today, Iceland is a highly modern and progressive society. It is consistently rated as having the smallest gender pay gap and strong LGBTQIA+ rights representation in the parliament and media. It’s also one of the greenest countries in the world, with almost all energy coming from renewable resources such as hydropower and geothermal.

History and government

Pre-modern history.

This island nation was settled by Vikings in the ninth century, with much of the early literature recognizing Norse sailor Ingolfur Arnason as the first settler of Iceland, founding Reykjavik in AD874 along with his wife and brother. Icelanders remain proud to this day of their Viking heritage. The Icelandic language, for example, is so similar to the Old Norse spoken during Viking times that Icelanders can still read and understand the original Icelandic sagas.

A book of settlements titled Landnamabok, compiled in the 12th century, documents the names and other details of nearly 400 original settlers of Iceland who arrived in the ninth and tenth centuries. The document tells of a Norse Viking called Floki who sailed to Iceland for fishing and farming, however, due to his livestock not surviving in the conditions, had to return to his home in Norway. After heading up a mountain and looking over a fjord full of sea ice, he named this land Iceland.

In AD930, an Icelandic General Assembly was established and was deemed a Christian settlement less than a century later. Settlers and slaves brought to Iceland by Scandinavians were of Irish and Norse descent, and although some still debate which communities influenced the identity we now know to be Icelandic, the first distinctive text documenting ‘Icelandic-ness’ is said to be a rule book of sorts – the First Grammatical Treatise.

20th century and today

After long periods under Norwegian and Danish rule, Iceland was recognized as a sovereign state in 1918. On 17 June 1944, Iceland became an independent republic. It has a multi-party parliamentary system and a written constitution. The parliament is still called Althingi after its medieval General Assembly.

Many of Iceland’s major industries stem from its location and surrounding natural resources. Tourism aside, fishing and seafood products make up much of the country’s exports and employ a majority of the workforce along with agriculture and farming. Recent investment in greenhouses and geothermal energy has seen Iceland become increasingly self-sufficient, growing products that usually do not fare well in icy climates, such as potatoes, tomatoes and potted plants. Other food is imported along with many consumer goods.

Eating and drinking

Flanked by the ocean and inhabited by almost twice the amount of sheep as humans, Iceland understandably boasts a cuisine dominated by seafood and local lamb.

The country’s diet relies on plenty of potatoes and lamb, but seafood trumps all – sourced fresh year-round from the waters of the North Atlantic and Arctic and prepared in a variety of ways. Be sure to try Hardfiskur – a salty fish jerky, best enjoyed buttered.

Sheep and cows are free-range and fed chemical-free diets, making lamb and dairy products exceptionally good here. One of the best ways to enjoy the produce on offer is to warm yourself up from the inside out with a hearty meat soup: a mixture of lamb, root vegetables, herbs, and rice.

Skyr, a popular yogurt that is technically a cheese, is also a must-try in all its variety of flavors. Eat it like the locals do at any time of the day – for breakfast, as a snack, as a dipping sauce, in drink form (called drykkur), or as a dessert topping.

Surprisingly, hot dogs are Iceland’s most iconic fast food. Widely available, a hot dog is probably the cheapest meal you’ll have in Iceland. Order one with all the toppings – sweet mustard, ketchup, raw onions, deep-fried onions, and aioli.

Rye bread (also known as rugbraud) and butter is a common side to most meals in Iceland, but the preferred way of cooking the loaves are quite unique. Traditionally, the bread is buried near a natural hot spring, sprinkled with sugar, and left to gently steam for up to 24 hours. The end result is dense, cake-like bread that has a slightly sweet taste. Enjoy it with a traditional Icelandic soup, smoked lamb, or, of course, fish.

Name a food and chances are Icelanders have tried to add licorice to it. Black licorice is beloved by locals and found in a wide range of desserts and candy bars. During your time here, head to Valdis in Reykjavik to test out a cone filled with salted black licorice ice cream. Even if the weather’s cold, the ice cream joints will be open!

The weird and wacky

Icelanders have a reputation for serving up some of the most unusual food in the world – boiled sheep’s head, fermented shark known as harkarl, ram testicles and smoked puffin to name a few. Although the country’s isolation and harsh winters once meant these foods were eaten out of necessity, today most of these ‘delicacies’ are only prepared to shock tourists. Try if you dare, but we suggest sticking to the common foods that locals eat.

Alcohol can be expensive in Iceland and is best bought at the duty-free shop. Although forms of prohibition existed until 1989, alcohol is now widely available all over the country in state-run liquor stores. If you’re feeling brave, try the local brew, Brennivin – a potent, traditional caraway-flavored schnapps nicknamed ‘black death’.

Iceland travel highlights

1. explore reykjavik.

Iceland's capital city is totally beguiling, surrounded by volcanic peaks and boasting a vibrant art and nightlife scene. Browse the city’s galleries, explore the colorful street art, dine on fresh lox (traditionally cured salmon),   or cycle to the striking cathedral of Hallgrimskirkja – trying to say that after a tipple or two of Brennivin (Iceland's signature spirit) might be tricky! Get stuck into Icelandic culture on our 6 day Northern Lights Escape .

2. Discover the Golden Circle

The Golden Circle is the holy trinity of southern Iceland. This 186-mile (300 km) route is brimming with natural wonders that showcase why so many travelers fall under Iceland's spell. Marvel at the layered cascades of Gullfoss Waterfall, explore the dramatic rift valley in Thingvellir National Park and witness the unpredictable eruptions in Geysir Geothermal Area. Marvel at breathtaking natural landscapes on our 5 day Iceland Express tour.

3. Cruise along Jokulsarlon

It's impossible not to be amazed by the sheer size and beauty of Jokulsarlon, Iceland’s famous glacial lagoon. Enjoy a boat tour along the icy waters where you'll cruise past towering glaciers and witness icebergs of all shapes, sizes and shades of blue drifting into the Atlantic Ocean. Cool down on our 8 day Iceland Discovery tour.

4. Experience life in Akureyri

Soak up the charm of this northern port city – the second-largest city in Iceland. Better described as a big town with lots of character, you'll be won over by its quaint turf homes, rich history and folklore, and the imposing Mount Súlur that looms over the town. Akureyri is also an ideal Northern Lights viewing location between September and April. Explore the streets of Akureyri on our 9 day Premium Iceland tour.

5. Be wowed by Westfjords

Venture off course to the unspoiled, untamed reaches of the Westfjords – without the big crowds. This is a land where mountains meet the sea most dramatically, where waterfalls tumble down into the inky fjords and puffins live along the towering cliffs. If you’re lucky and conditions allow, we might cruise along Látrabjarg (Europe’s largest bird cliff) to see puffins, razorbills, guillemots and more. Adventure through the Westfjords on our 14 day East Greenland and Iceland Northern Lights tour.

6. Bathe in the Blue Lagoon

There's no need to worry about being cold all the time in Iceland when you can slip into the famous Blue Lagoon just out of Reykjavik. Surrounded by black volcanic rock, a soak in the mineral-rich, milk-blue waters of this geothermal spa is the perfect way to relax and unwind after a big day of walking.

Geography and environment

Iceland possesses some of the world’s most incredible natural wonders and unique landscapes. From active volcanoes to vast ice fields, bubbling hot springs and enormous glaciers, these dramatic contrasts have earned Iceland the nickname of the ‘Land of Fire and Ice’.

Many of these geological features are products of geographical location – on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates intersect and their movements away from each other create volcanic activity. The country is covered by moss-carpeted lava fields, soaring fjords, incredible waterfalls and dramatic geysers, all of which add to Iceland’s otherworldly look.

The country is also the perfect spot to see the Northern Lights. From September to March, you’ll have the best chance to view this spectacular natural light show when the skies are clear and auroral activity is high. But don’t let that stop you from visiting in other seasons – Iceland’s natural wonders are truly year-round attractions.

Top 4 natural phenomena of Iceland

1. Northern Lights

The Northern Hemisphere's Aurora Borealis has captivated and intrigued travelers for years. Any winter tour of Iceland absolutely must include a chance to see the Northern Lights. This natural light display that runs along magnetic fields often brings hypnotic green, yellow and red shades to the night sky in Iceland from September to March. As one of nature's most magnificent triumphs, this is one unforgettable spectacle.

2. Gullfoss

Otherwise known as Golden Falls, this spectacular three-tiered waterfall drops suddenly into a deep cavern. The falls are surrounded by lush, green countryside, and the rainbows created by the mist and spray provide brilliant photo opportunities.

3. Lake Myvatn

This part of northern Iceland was born from volcanic eruptions millions of years ago and continues to be shaped by volcanic activity to this day. The combination of strange lava formations, thermal caves and a sprawling lake dotted with craters and rising rocks makes for an eerie yet beautiful landscape.

4. Jokulsarlon

Literally translating to ‘glacial river lagoon’, this monumental glacier lake is the largest in Iceland. Featuring a parade of large and small blue icebergs floating on and under the pure, icy water, this lagoon is so beautiful that it has been used as a backdrop for Hollywood films, a set for reality television shows and in a starring role on a postage stamp!

Iceland is notorious for being an expensive destination. Travelling on a budget here is difficult but can be done. Head to Bonus – Iceland’s discount grocery store – so you can cook rather than eat out for each meal. The duty-free store at Keflavik International Airport is the best place to pick up a bottle of Icelandic alcohol such as Brennivin liquor, Reyka vodka or Viking Gold beer for a fraction of the price you’d find elsewhere. It’s also a good idea to travel as a group, as operators can get better rates than a single traveler at hotels and restaurants, plus they know all the local hotspots.

If you’d like to take home Icelandic local specialties, Reykjavik is the best place to shop. Some of the country’s coolest retailers can be found on Laugavegur, one of the oldest shopping streets. Here you can browse clothing from quirky local designers alongside traditional lambswool sweaters, as well as tourist shops selling plastic Viking hats and puffin magnets. For smaller boutiques selling local art, head to Skolavordustigur.

Festival and events

Despite the long and dark winters, Icelanders are among the happiest people in the world. Why? One reason is that they understand the importance of getting together and having a good time, even if it’s pitch black outside. There are many celebrations to join in on throughout the year, but here are a few to look out for:

Winter Lights Festival

Every year, buildings around Reykjavik light up at night to celebrate both the winter world and the growing light after a long period of darkness. The Winter Lights Festival uses many public buildings and all major museums and thermal pools to illuminate the city with lighting designs and art installations as a way to get people thawed out after a long winter.

This annual mid-winter feast in January or February is one of Iceland’s oldest festivals, dating back to Viking days. Fearless eaters can find restaurants in Reykjavik offering special Thorrablot dinners of boiled sheep’s head, rotten shark’s meat, and cured ram testicles. If you can, try to snag an invitation to a local’s house, where celebrations tend to be more festive and involve lots of singing, dancing, and drinking.

Viking Festival

Modern-day Vikings in traditional garb flock to Hafnarfjorour each June for a festival Leif Erikson would approve of. Swordfights, archery, axe throwing, a traditional market, concerts, and a proper Viking feast are all part of the festivities.

National Day

1944 marks the year that Iceland became a republic after an overwhelming majority of the citizens voted for independence. The deciding referendum took place between May 20 and 23 that year; however, Iceland’s National day is celebrated on June 17th – the birthday of the man who originally led the movement in the late 19th century, Jon Sigurdsson. There are parades all around the country, usually with brass bands and marching horses. Music food, fireworks, and street parties – you get it, they’re a patriotic bunch.

Dalvik Fiskidagurinn Mikli (The Great Fish Day)

Each August, the northern fishing village of Dalvik invites you to a free, all-you-can-eat fish and seafood buffet – held for no reason other than to get people together over a delicious meal. You might come for the free food, but you’ll stay for the company.

When is the best time to visit Iceland?

Deciding what you want to see in Iceland will give you a better idea of when is the best time to travel. Wanting to get active around the countryside and see waterfalls and wildlife? The warmer spring and summer months are probably ideal. Prefer to soak in the geothermal lagoons and get a chance to see the Northern Lights? Well, likely the cooler months – with their longer nights – are best for you.

Spring and summer are considered optimal times to visit Iceland if green landscapes and balmy days are your thing. The early spring months bring warmer days, while summer offers long daylight hours with only short nights. In the summer season, July and August are the warmest months and the busiest time for tourists.

In September, tourism tends to slow down as the weather becomes unpredictable and the countryside is usually less accessible. However, there are plenty of attractions for the off-peak traveler, including the beauty of fall colors and, of course, the awe-inspiring Northern Lights.

As you might expect, winters in Iceland can be challenging. During late December there are about four-and-a-half hours of daylight and it's often cloudy. In January, there are on average three sunny days in Reykjavík, with temperatures hovering around freezing point, often with chilling winds.

Do I need a visa to travel to Iceland?

Iceland is a member of the Schengen Convention, which means that if you travel to an EU member country or countries, like Iceland, for a total of less than 90 days, a visa is not required. Citizens of Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the US, the UK and other member countries of the EU and Schengen area are included under this arrangement. Other countries do require a visa to visit Iceland, including citizens of South Africa.

Visas are the responsibility of the individual traveler. Entry requirements can change at any time, so it's important that you check for the latest information. Please visit the relevant consular website of the country or countries you’re visiting for detailed and up-to-date visa information specific to your country of origin. Check the Essential Trip Information section of your tour itinerary for more information.

Is tipping customary in Iceland?

Tipping isn't expected in Iceland. Hotels, restaurants and cafes already include a service fee and consumption taxes (VAT) in the bill, so tipping extra isn't necessary. However, feel free to leave a small amount if your experience has been particularly good, especially for assistance provided by drivers, tour leaders or service workers.

What is the internet access like in Iceland?

Travelers will be able to access the internet in cybercafes and at wi-fi hotspots in Iceland's cities and large towns. Rural and remote areas may have less internet access, so be prepared when traveling away from the city.

Most accommodation and eateries in Iceland offer wi-fi access, which is usually free to use with a code. If you wish to stay connected for the majority of your trip, it may be wise to purchase a prepaid SIM card with a data package.

Many Icelandic libraries and tourist information offices have shared computers for public internet access if you are without a device to connect to wi-fi. Sometimes a small fee is charged for this service.

Can I use my cell phone while in Iceland?

Travelers can use their cell phones in Iceland's main cities and towns, though remote and isolated areas may have inferior cell reception.

If you wish to stay connected for the majority of your trip, it may be wise to purchase a prepaid SIM card for the duration of your journey. This will likely be the cheapest way to use your phone in Iceland.

For EU citizens, depending on who you have your phone plan with, you may be able to use your current SIM in Iceland – your service provider will be able to provide more details.

Global roaming can also be activated, but check with your service provider to find out about any fees you may incur, as sometimes this can be expensive.

What are the toilets like in Iceland?

Modern, flushable toilets are the standard in Iceland.

In terms of public toilets, Reykjavik and other major towns and cities have some, but along highways and at many tourist destinations – especially campgrounds and natural attractions – there is a lack of facilities. Expect to pay a small fee when visiting public toilets and, in busy months, expect queues in main tourist areas.

There have been recent occurrences of tourists resorting to other means in remote places and near tourist sites. We recommend being prepared and talking to your group leader if you have any concerns.

What will it cost for a…?

Iceland's unit of currency is the krona. Here's what you can expect to pay for a:

Can I drink the water in Iceland?

Tap water is considered safe to drink in Iceland unless marked otherwise. For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Fill a reusable water bottle or canteen with filtered water instead.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Iceland?

Credit cards are widely accepted in Iceland and are used frequently by locals to pay for just about anything. Paying with a credit card at shops, guesthouses, supermarkets, restaurants, cafes, and on taxi rides shouldn't present a problem. Iceland is almost a cashless society, so cards are the best option; however, a lot of payments will require your four-digit PIN, so be sure to know this before you leave home.

What is ATM access like in Iceland?

ATMs are usually easy to find in Iceland's cities and villages and generally accept most foreign cards.

What is the weather like in Iceland?

Iceland’s temperatures are cool and do vary throughout the year. In winter months, minimum temperatures plummet to below freezing. In Reykjavik, summer temperatures average at around 52°F, while winter maximums are approximately 32°F. Rainfall is quite consistent throughout the year; between 25–50 mm per month, with most days experiencing some rainfall.

Is it safe to travel to Iceland?

Iceland is a very safe country to travel to and is one of the safest countries in the world.

Is Iceland safe for LGBTQIA+ travellers?

The people of Iceland have an open and accepting attitude to LGBTQIA+ communities, and Iceland is considered one of the world’s most LGBTQIA+ friendly countries. Since 2006, same-sex couples have had equal access to adoption and IVF, and in 2010 the Icelandic Parliament made a unanimous decision to define marriage as between two individuals. As might be expected in a small country, however, the gay scene is quite low-key, even in Reykjavik.

In 2012, more legislation was passed to formalize the name and identity-changing process for the needs of trans and genderqueer individuals. There is still a way to go to achieve full equality, but Iceland is, in many regards, leading the way globally.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting Equaldex or ILGA before you travel and reading more about the LGBTQIA+ culture in Iceland .

If you are traveling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at the time of booking and we’ll arrange the rooming configuration accordingly. A single supplement is available on some tours for travellers who do not wish to share a room.

Is Iceland accessible for travelers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Because of its remote location and size, Iceland can prove difficult when it comes to accessibility for individuals with mobility issues. Some of the main sights, such as the Blue Lagoon, are wheelchair accessible, but many of the natural attractions have unpaved paths and unsteady terrain. Iceland has a dedicated information center,  Thekkingarmidstod Sjalfsbjorg , that provides up-to-date information on accessibility and accessible facilities in Iceland, as well as other related information.

If you do live with a visual, hearing, or other impairment, let your booking agent or group leader know early on so they’re aware and suitable arrangements can be made. As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you, and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.

What to wear in Iceland

In summer, Iceland experiences cool but mild weather throughout the country, with maximum temperatures averaging around 55°F. It’s still important, however, to pack some warm clothing at this time, as temperatures at night can drop quite dramatically. In winter, some days barely reach over 32°F, so preparing for this is crucial. It can be wet and windy, and roads may be iced over, so thermal gear, a waterproof jacket and pants and sturdy walking boots are all highly recommended.

Discover the best tour companies in Iceland. Read this article to know what to look for in choosing the tour operator that will handle your trip to Iceland. Learn about their most exciting tours , from sightseeing to adventure experiences.

Iceland is one of the most popular destinations in the world. Thanks to its diverse landscapes, natural attractions, and rich culture, nearly a million travelers visit Iceland yearly.

When exploring Iceland, most visitors book organized tours from tour operators and travel agencies rather than make DIY trips. These organized tours can help save time and provide itinerary options even before you arrive in the land of fire and ice.

For example, suppose you want to visit the Golden Circle of Iceland or go  boating at the Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon . The best tour operators in Iceland can give you an easy and convenient experience. Their impeccable services and extensive experience can transform a visit to these locations into an unforgettable Icelandic holiday.

Watch the dramatic eruption of the Strokkur geyser when you visit the Golden Circle.

Choosing a tour operator that will handle your travel activities can make or unmake your Icelandic holiday. That’s why it’s essential to research the tour company and its products before finalizing your booking.

What makes a tour provider the perfect match for your travel needs? You can search the web for blogs and articles about this question, but you’ll probably get unlimited or overwhelming answers.  To save you from the trouble of extensive research online, we have listed five recurring factors to consider when choosing a tour provider in Iceland or anywhere else.

Does your tour operator have positive reviews online? You can start selecting the best tour operator by knowing if they have a good reputation in handling tour packages. Most tour companies have an online presence you can check through search engines and social media.

Search engines like Google display review ratings of tour companies from unique users who had prior transactions with them. Apart from the five-star rating you can base on, you can also view the comments by users for specific details of their tour experiences.

How many years has the tour company been operating? In most cases, those with long years of operation in the travel industry have more expertise in running excursions.

If you have saved up months of your salary for this travel, you may not want to gamble your Icelandic dream holiday on a company with less than a year of operation.

How much are the operator’s tour products compared to their competitors? Pricing or budgeting is a vital part of every traveler’s vacation planning. Before booking a product, consider comparing the price with other companies offering a similar experience.

Pricing for tours in Iceland varies widely depending on the duration, type of activity, and the number of participants. Sightseeing tours are typically cheaper than activity tours like skiing and glacier hiking, in the same way that group tours are more affordable than private tours.

In addition, the best tour operators in Iceland have detailed tour descriptions where you can read the inclusions of each tour product. For example, a tour product should include a guide and entrance fees to attractions. Meanwhile, your tour package must include accommodations for multi-day tours in Iceland .

Tour Vehicles

What vehicles are used for tours in Iceland?

Tour providers in Iceland use different types of vehicles for their packages, depending on the kind of activity and number of participants.

Private tours typically use private cars, super jeeps, and minibusses for their packages. This setup is ideal for those who want a more personalized experience with a better pace and privacy.

On the other hand, tours with a bigger number of joiners use large buses to transport travelers to specific destinations. The buses can accommodate at least 30 passengers and up. This setup is standard for sightseeing tours in the  Golden Circle and the South Coast .

Do the tour guides speak English? Do they know other languages?

A tour guide is one of the most significant parts of any tour experience. They can either make your adventure more fun or forgettable.

A reliable tour operator in Iceland has local tour guides that are friendly and knowledgeable. They know the elements of your tour at the back of their hands even when not holding a brochure. They will tell you trivia, stories, and folklore about the attractions you’re exploring.

In most cases, the guides can speak English to accommodate foreign travelers. Sometimes, other guides can even speak different languages like French, German, Spanish, Chinese, and more. You can verify this when checking out a tour product and website or by asking the tour operator directly.

To help you plan your trip to Iceland, below is a list of 25 tour companies we consider the best in Iceland based on the five factors mentioned above. These operators are ranked and arranged based on their 5-star ratings, reviews, and quality of tours from the lowest to the highest.

Discover the Amazing Northern lights

From September through April, the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights can be seen in all parts of Iceland so long as the sky is clear and it is dark. Areas that are not subject to "light pollution" are the best places to watch for the lights. Areas in the Icelandic countryside tend to be best. Researchers have discovered that auroral activity is cyclic, peaking roughly every 11 years.

About Iceland Travel

Your dmc in iceland.

Iceland Travel was founded in 1936 – back when they called travellers “explorers” rather than “tourists”. And for almost 100 years now, we’ve been proudly serving the diverse needs of clients from all four corners.

Every day, our experts on the ground craft unforgettable travel experiences and take guests on uniquely local journeys. This is why we are the leading B2B travel company in Iceland, able to care for your guests in the best possible way.

Why choose Iceland

Our home is a land of pleasing extremes. Landscapes that are otherworldly with guesthouses that feel like home. Frozen “diamonds” of glacial ice and warm welcomes. Turf-topped farmhouses and soothing spa experiences.

We know all these, plus what’s in-between. Let us show your clients the wonders of Iceland as locals see it.

Hi Priscilla!

We got back to the States last Saturday night and meant to send you an email over the weekend.  First of all, THANK YOU so much for the best organized trip to Iceland ever!  I love your country and its natural beauty!  We truly appreciated the TRAVEL BOOK and the REGION BOOK that was prepared for us because it served as our main guide for the whole trip. There was so much to see in every part of the region that we had to pick and choose. We were able to go to Secret Lagoon and Myvatn Natural Baths and enjoyed it so much. We walked the trails leading to the Blue Lagoon on our first day and saw so many tourists, that we appreciated the less touristic lagoons that we experienced.

Because our time was only 8 days around the Ring Road, we were mostly limited in visiting Myvatn and Akuyeryi where would could have stayed at least 2 days exploring in each city. We did not let the rain bother us on our Glacier Hike and the Whale Watching which was magical.

The accommodations were very good especially the Fosshotels that we stayed at.  The breakfast prepared for us were substantial.  I was surprised that some served “grilled horse” which I had to taste just for the heck of it.  We loved the Icelandic horses that we said hello to on the way to Blondous.  I was also very pleased that tourists were respectful of not littering the sites too much.

On our next trip to Iceland, we would like to explore the Western Fjords which we were told are also beautiful. The Snafellsness Peninsula and hope to see more birds and wildlife on our next trip.

I have already told my co-workers and friends that if they ever consider traveling to Iceland to come see me to get the best travel organizer for Iceland!

Again, thank you for everything!

Sea kayaking, one of the most exhilarating ways to experience antarctica, the arctic and beyond..

Sea kayaking holidays in the humbling wilderness of  Antarctica ,  the Arctic , and some of the world’s most biodiverse regions, are guaranteed to stir your soul. Paddle between brash ice and icebergs of all shapes and sizes, absorbing the majestic scenery as it unfolds before you.

In Antarctica, keep your camera on-hand for unforgettable encounters with penguins, seals and whales, and occasionally leopard seals or orcas. In the Arctic, prepare to  paddle under nesting bird colonies, past massive glaciers and around large iceberg.

Led by  experienced guides , you and your small group of like-minded adventurers will paddle between ice floes, brash ice and icebergs of all shapes and sizes. Paddling is one of the best ways to access and intimately explore the beautiful coastlines we visit and therefore make the most of your time in the wild and remote  destinations we visit .

‘Getting out amongst it’ is our philosophy, and that is exactly what we do. Weather permitting, the sea kayaking activity is normally available anytime the other expeditioners go out. Rather than travelling large distances, our aim is to ensure you see as much as possible. We paddle between 5 to 15 kilometres (2 to 4 hours) per outing, often taking a snack and a flask of hot chocolate to enjoy on our excursion.

Each small group of kayakers (up to 10 per guide) will have their own intimate exploration of the small hidden bays and coasts that are inaccessible to Zodiacs. Of course, we also make time for your own shore excursions and wildlife encounters.

The elements play an important role in our sea kayaking program. It is important that you have an adventurous attitude and understand that the weather can impact our kayaking time.

For all of our trips, you must be active in the outdoors and have an adventurous spirit. The level of experience differs slightly depending on the region you are visiting.

For most temperate and polar you should be an intermediate paddler. In South Georgia however, conditions can be more varied and you require solid paddling experience in ocean swell and wind.

For our tropical trips some prior paddling experience is needed. We may encounter wind on these trips, however the water is fairly protected.

You do not need to be an expert or know how to roll. However, you must be able to swim and you should have experience in a wet exit and assisted re-entry. You should also be proficient at putting on a spray skirt by yourself and be comfortable paddling on seas with up to half a metre swell. It is also important that you gain some practice getting into a kayak from a pier, wharf, or deep shoreline where you can’t step into the kayak from standing position. You can easily practice all of this at home, plus paddling in a variety of weather conditions, before your trip.

What about beginners up to the challenge?

Our guides do not offer instructional classes for beginners. Therefore, the sea kayaking option is unsuitable for complete novices. However, there is often ample time to gain the required experience before you depart. We may be able to recommend a reputable sea kayak operator in your area for some tuition prior to the trip.

Your guide will assess your ability on the initial paddle, and if you have insufficient experience, he or she reserves the right to restrict your participation in rougher conditions.

You should be fit enough to paddle for up to three hours and climb between moving Zodiacs on the water. Regular exercise is recommended, because the fitter you are the more you will enjoy the experience. The more paddles you can do before the trip, the better. We recommend at least three outings prior to your voyage.

Polar regions

During summer the air temperature in the Antarctic Peninsula, Greenland and Spitsbergen are generally above freezing but can range from -4°C to +5°C / 24.8°F to 41°F. The water temperature in the polar regions is close to freezing and winds sweep off the glaciers, making paddling a chilling experience. In South Georgia, there are stronger winds and swells than in Antarctica. Scotland, Iceland, Norwegian coasts are warmer with water temperatures of around 12 °C/ 53.6°F.

Temperate regions

The northern waters are warmer than the polar regions but water temperatures of around 12 °C/ 53.6°F mean you may opt to wear your paddle jacket on a warm, sunny day or our dry suits on a cool day. Surf landings are not likely, but you must be capable of paddling in a small swell or wind chop, with winds up to 20 knots. With that being said, we will not paddle if wind conditions are too strong and there is no sheltered area for paddling.

Tropical regions

In Costa Rica and Panama, April is the end of the dry season. The shoulder season begins in May, bringing increased humidity. Afternoon rain showers are possible in May with temperatures ranging from 26-36 °C (80- 96 °F). Winds are generally light at this time of year. The water temperature ranges from 27 -29 °C. Surf landings are not likely, but be prepared to paddle in a small swell or wind chop, with winds up to 15 knots. Again, we will not paddle if wind conditions are too strong and there is no sheltered area for paddling.

The Sea Kayaking activity is available for an additional surcharge and includes guided excursions and kayaking equipment. Fares for this activity start from US$900, AU$1,250, £460 or €550.

Prices are indicative only and are variable. They are calculated based on the days of voyage, ability to carry out the activity and exchange rates.

Private Golden Circle Tour with 5+ attractions from Reykjavik

Our guide to paddler ratio is 1:10 and we provide an accompanying safety Zodiac. There are 26 places available in Antarctica and tropical voyages, 20 in temperate regions, South Georgia and all Arctic trips except in Franz Josef Land where the maximum is 16 kayakers.

Kayakers must be 14 or over.

Sea kayaking is offered in place of regular shore excursions. We aim to paddle as often as possible. Depending on the voyage, we generally aim to paddle twice per day.

We will give you a drybag for extra clothing, binoculars and anything that needs to be kept dry. You should also carry a water bottle. We recommend bringing a waterproof camera or phone, or ensuring you have a good quality waterproof case.

If the weather changes during our outing we will head back to the ship and perhaps join a shore excursion. The ship’s captain, expedition leader and kayak guide always maintain close contact to ensure a safe paddling experience. We do not attempt to paddle too far away from the ship. The emphasis is on experiencing the destination rather than travelling long distances.

The kayaks are made with a hard plastic and are easily paddled in swell and conducting shore landings, and through small patches of brash ice. We manoeuvre around the larger ice chunks and floes.

Kayaking in the poles offers a unique wildlife viewing experience. In Antarctica, we have many opportunities to encounter penguins, seals and whales, and occasionally we may even spot leopard seals or orcas. In the Arctic, we’ll paddle under nesting bird colonies, past massive glaciers and around large icebergs, however we maintain a safe distance from polar bears and walruses. Our guides carry rifles and flare guns in the Arctic to ensure your safety against polar bears.

Kayakers in wild temperate regions will have a unique wildlife experience, with possible encounters with seals and basking sharks. You will have the opportunity to view some of the largest sea bird colonies in the northern hemisphere.

The superb wildlife-viewing opportunities are endless in the astonishingly biodiverse nature reserves we visit. Kayaks offer a unique opportunity to view marine and land mammals, coral reefs, tropical fish, sea birds and an astonishing range of rainforest birds. We will bring our snorkelling gear with us during our paddles and take advantage of any opportunities to view marine life up close.

In the unlikely event of a capsize, your experienced guide will assist by righting the kayak, stabilising it then pumping it out. Paddlers will re-enter with the guide’s help, or with a support Zodiac. With drysuits and warm clothing underneath you will be comfortable in cold water for up to half an hour. Note that the kayaks have separate compartments with bulkheads, which means they will float after a capsize.

No. Each kayaking place is for one person only. Passengers are unable to share a kayaking place as we customise the kayaks and dry suits for each individual kayaker at the beginning of each voyage.

Working with Zicasso’s travel agent on the pre-trip planning was easy. He provided expert thoughts and comments. The fact that he lives in Iceland was seen by our group as the most credible option for us. Our agent kept track of the weather and would reach out when things needed to be shuffled around. We were scheduled for the glacier hike and the forecast changed, so that day was going to be extremely windy and perhaps the hike would be canceled. We were able to go the day before and had a beautiful sunny day, with just four of us and a guide. He also tracked our scheduled jeep tours to ensure they would go out.

From start to finish, our travel agency was exceptional, efficient, timely, and very thoughtful. Zicasso’s travel agent worked with us from the beginning to plan our dream trip to Sweden and Swedish Lapland, filling every day with a lifetime of amazing experiences and memories. When an unanticipated glitch popped up, the travel team was quick to help problem-solve with kindness and expertise, resulting in an even better trip. We would recommend them to all our friends and family for a once-in-a-lifetime trip!

Zicasso’s travel operator planned a fantastic trip. They had timed plans for us at the beginning, with suggestions for the afternoons so we wouldn’t feel rushed. We also found one of our spots was closed, and they worked with us to find a new time to make it work. The hotels and hikes were very well planned and we got to see and do all we dreamed of!

We just finished our trip to Iceland. From the very beginning, Adi from the travel agency was attentive to my ideas for our itinerary, while adding valuable insight into additional activities that would help to make a memorable experience. We experienced it all. Snorkeling the fissure (with the best company. We didn't wear dry suits and were in the water the longest – I was hesitant, but I didn't need to be), walking the glacier, ATV riding (in some of the most beautiful areas), horseback riding, descending into a dormant volcano, and so much more. Small hikes, warm baths, and film sets rounded off the trip.  I would be remiss if I didn't add that we had a great guide. He made sure everything ran smoothly. When the weather caused whale watching to be canceled, he immediately went into plan B mode. He was easygoing and made sure we were where we needed to be when we needed to be there. He was friendly and answered all our questions. When our son was stuck in Iceland after our trip ended, he reached out to see if he could help. As a side note, we were promptly refunded for the whale watching which was canceled. This is a top-notch company. I will use them again when we come back for the Northern Lights. I highly recommend them.

This was the first time I'd used a travel agency and it was money well spent! There is so much to do in Iceland and I felt overwhelmed when trying to plan myself. Providing the agency with our budget and being able to not stress about planning was amazing! Our week-long trip was perfectly smooth and we were able to see and do so much! The last day of the trip was my favorite, when we did an extreme lava cave tour (totally wouldn’t have picked this on my own) and saw the Northern Lights in all their glory from a yacht! We would definitely recommend Zicasso’s agency and when I plan my next trip, I will see if they can assist me again.

Kjartan's Travel Agency

 Based on  34  reviews

I will discuss the experience in phases. The experience itself was overall a five, but only due to the service provided once there. Booking and presale: Communication was great. I worked with Kjartan directly and he provided lots of information. Pricing came quickly and there were reminders to book due to things selling out. Once booked, communication slowed to a crawl. We did not get a complete itinerary until a day before we left. Part of this delay was because we were waiting on a cancellation to book our final hotel, but it was stressful. I was told, "Don't worry, I have it taken care of", which held zero weight when I hadn't met the person in person. I asked direct questions that were not answered directly for days to a week. I feared making the final payment, feeling like we may have been scammed with our down payment. The only thing that made me feel secure was that it was through Zicasso and they would back their agents/tours. I was given the WhatsApp of our tour guide and information about what happens at pick-up only after I asked for it. Ahhhh! Arrival: In a complete turn of events, the rest of the trip was bliss. Our guide and Kjartan showed us all the majestic beauty of Iceland. They accommodated every request and suggested things when we were noncommittal. Our guide became a part of our family on the trip. We sang songs, went out to dinner, and took endless photos and videos together. She could not have been more kind, welcoming, and gracious. Our three-year-old son fell madly in love with her and she and him created a special bond. Our tour could not have been better, with times being booked and times of rest. We always felt like our guide would take care of us. I could not be more thankful for her. Overall: I would highly recommend this travel company to friends/family, but push for what you need prior to the visit.

Eurovision 2024: Here are the songs with the best shot at glory

Switzerland's Nemo rehearses "The Code" before the second semifinal.

Year after year, the Eurovision Song Contest delivers a dazzling, glittery spectacle of only barely contained chaos. There's all the lights, fireworks, flags, sequins, disco balls and dance breaks, of course – but there's also the songs themselves, which this year boast displays of (vocal) gymnastics more impressive than anything you'll see flipping across a mat in Paris this summer.

Know this: 2024's brace of 26 Eurovision finalists represent what is, even for this contest, a maximalist bunch. These songs go big . I'd go so far as to say that the broadcast on Saturday (starting at 3:00 p.m. ET on Peacock) is shaping up to qualify as Peak Eurovision, so prepare to bask in the glorious bombast of it all.

Musically, expect the usual mix of pop bops, baroque ballads and club bangers. Also, as always, stirring anthems about (pick one or more) standing up or holding up or looking up or not giving up. But in terms of vibe? This year's roster teems with performers positioning themselves as quirky/witchy iconoclasts. You know the sort: bold, irrepressible individuals who reject the (checks notes) conformist RULES of (checks notes again) SOCIETY.

ABBA fans celebrate 'Waterloo' Eurovision victory, 50 years on

ABBA fans celebrate 'Waterloo' Eurovision victory, 50 years on

The welcome presence of such gleefully bonkers acts as Ireland's Bambie Thug , Finland's Windows95man , San Marino's MEGARA , Slovenia's Raiven and many others – including several performers highlighted below – makes it official: Eurovision 2024 is The Year of the Weirdo.

For those of us who've had to suffer through the past few years of the contest, which were overstuffed with wan, weepy young men warbling about heartbreak, I say: Bring it on, ya joyous freaks.

And, though Eurovision organizers see the event as "non-political," it has been, as in the past , a televised concert with synth beats, glitter on the floor, and geopolitical undertones. Earlier this year, artists from Finland and Iceland called for Israel to be banned from the competition outright for its military offensive in Gaza. Israel was asked to revise the lyrics to their entry in the competition this year, when an initial song seemed to refer to Oct. 7 attacks by Hamas. Anti-war protests are planned outside the Malmo Arena on Saturday.

Here's what you need to know before Saturday's Grand Final.

Finland's Teemu Keisteri, also known as Windows95man, emerges from a denim egg while performing the song "No Rules!" during the first Eurovision semifinal in Malmo, Sweden, on Tuesday, May 7. Jessica Gow/TT News Agency/AFP via Getty hide caption

Finland's Teemu Keisteri, also known as Windows95man, emerges from a denim egg while performing the song "No Rules!" during the first Eurovision semifinal in Malmo, Sweden, on Tuesday, May 7.

We won't be diving deep into the internecine details of Eurovision voting, because they'll spend a lot of time during Saturday's broadcast explaining everything in punishing detail (which is historically a good time to refresh your drink and/or nip to the bathroom).

But, very basically: The 37 countries participating in Eurovision this year each submitted a song to compete in two semi-finals which took place earlier this week. Of those 37, 26 are competing in Saturday's Grand Final. Six sailed through easily: every year, the so-called "Big Five" countries – France, Spain, Germany, Italy and the U.K. – automatically qualify for the Grand Final, as they contribute the most money to the competition. Also guaranteed to advance: Whichever country won the previous year's contest, thereby hosting the competition this year. In this case: Sweden.

This year, the 20 other countries that made it to the Grand Final were entirely determined by viewers watching at home, the so-called televote. This put an interesting spin on things, because in the past, placement in the Grand Final was determined by a 50/50 combination of the televote and the votes of an international jury of music industry professionals.

Doing away with the jury vote in the semifinals meant that performers who brought a lot of crowd-pleasing visual flair to their qualifying performances had a better shot than in years past. The international juries will be back for the Grand Final, however. How their historically conservative, wet-blanket sensibilities mesh with the voting public's love of shiny glittery fiery extravagance is a big part of what makes Eurovision so damn compelling and unpredictable.

So, during Saturday's Grand Final, 26 countries will perform – the 20 qualifying countries, the Big Five, and the host nation, Sweden. Each performance must adhere to the following rules:

  • Songs must be original.
  • Songs must be no more than three minutes in length.
  • Lead vocals must be performed live.
  • No live instrumentation of any kind is permitted.
  • During a song, no more than six performers may be onstage at the same time.

Just to underscore Rule 3: Eurovision is not and has never been a lip-syncing competition. These performers are singing live, though their instrumentation and backing vocals are pre-recorded. If on Saturday you find yourself beginning to doubt that fact, particularly for countries whose performers incorporate propulsively aerobic choreography like Georgia , Cyprus and Austria , remind yourself that you're not watching a lip-sync, you're watching tremendous breath control.

The live vocal performance is all-important. Over the years, more than a few acts have sailed into the Grand Final favored to win, only to have a hesitant, breathless or off-key vocal in the live performance destroy their chances. Stakes. Gotta love 'em!

And as for Rule 4: Whenever a performance involves a "band" wailing away on their drums, guitars and/or saxophones, remind yourself you're not watching them actually shred, you're watching them mime. It's kind of cute.

Ireland's Bambie Thug performs "Doomsday Blue" during the first semifinal.

The Grand Final

Last year, for the first time, viewers in the U.S. were able to vote for their favorite Eurovision performances – though those votes got pooled with other non-participating countries around the world. This year the U.S. will again have a chance to vote in the Grand Final via the Eurovision app .

Here's how Saturday's Grand Final will proceed. First, the 26 countries will perform their songs. Then the audience will vote. (NOTE: Viewers in participating countries cannot vote for their own country, which at least notionally prevents the big population centers from dominating the contest.) The audience vote will be tallied. Then the jury votes will be collected over a series of glorified Zoom calls to representatives in each participating country, which will be marked by video lags and audio dropouts; this process is awkward, interminable, cringeworthy and delightful. The jury votes will be tallied, which may or may not completely supersede the televote. The winner will be announced, a trophy will be handed out, and the winner will perform the winning song again. The end.

Here are the songs with the best shot to win this year's Eurovision Song Contest, as determined by me, a middle-aged queer American man who loves bops and hates ballads. Which is to say: This is a highly subjective list. If you want to know what the oddsmakers think, go here .

Netherlands: " Europapa " by Joost Klein

This goofy, peppy, earwormy bop is classic Eurovision – and that's even before you factor in its lyrics, which are essentially a love song to the European Union itself. Specifically, to the ability to galavant around the continent freely, cheaply and without a care in the world. (At the end, he also sneaks in a tribute to his late father, "Who told me once the world has no borders.") Basically, this song represents the catchiest, sunniest possible way to say: Eat it, Brexiters!

Estonia: " (nendest) narkootikumidest ei tea me (kull) midagi " by 5MIINUST & Puuluup

Sure it's a bunch of burly, beardy dudes dancing a TikTok-ready folk dance, playing folk instruments and, yes, throat-singing. In other words: Eurovision Bingo! But it's so much more than that: These performers radiate undeniable bear-daddy charisma, and the driving uptempo beat, paired with that plaintive, soaring vocal ("Oooooooooh, yea-eahhhhhhhhh") will crawl inside your medulla oblongata and set up housekeeping. The title translates to "We (really) don't know anything about (these) drugs," and the Estonian lyrics read like a suspect pleading his innocence on a drug arrest: "I don't know drugs, I know soda and cider/Couldn't tell the difference between vitamins and speed." "We avoid intoxicating substances, that's something rich people do." Uh-huh. Suuuuure.

Croatia: " Rim Tim Tagi Dim " by Baby Lasagna

In many ways, "Rim Tim Tagi Dim" offers a sardonic counterpoint to the Netherlands' "Europapa." Where that song celebrates the freedom of travel within the EU, this one laments the loss of opportunity in Eastern Europe which is causing thousands of young people to leave their homes and migrate to the West. Granted, performer Baby Lasagna puts a wink on it all ("Bye mom, bye dad/Meow, cat, please meow back"), all set to an insistent, Rammsteinian marching rhythm. But he finds a way to lean into the melancholy at the same time ("There's no going back/My presence fades to black.") It's that kind of narrative turducken – and, let's be real, a killer hook – that make this at least a Top Three contender, if not the outright winner. Croatia has never won Eurovision, so that would be a big deal.

Italy: " La Noia " by Angelina Mango

"La Noia" means "The boredom," and Angelina Mango saturates her vocals with a fitting amount of over-it-all ennui even as the syncopated, percussive melody swirls and throbs and compels you out of your seat and onto the dance floor. (In this case, the dance floor is your living room.) Lyrically, the song's about a woman who turns to dancing and partying to deal with "these wasted days." "A crown of thorns will be the dress code for my party," she sings, which is a deeply Italian but weirdly emo sentiment for a song so doggedly determined to set your booty shaking. Mango's got a huge following because she's a mesmerizing performer who never breaks a sweat, even during those passages when the tempo suddenly accelerates and the lyrics start speeding by so fast they threaten to turn the song into a five-Vespa pile-up. Keep an eye on her.

France: " Mon Amour " by Slimane

Slimane invests this straight-down-the-middle ballad with a searching, plaintive, torch-song quality that's more quintessentially French than a beret slathered with Camembert and stuffed in a baguette. If you go by the lyrics, the guy's kind of a pill: Urging his lover to return to Paris, promising things will be different, demanding to know if they love him, and at one point asking the most hilariously red-flaggiest of all questions, "What do we do about my pain?" But Slimane emotes all over the stage, and his insinuating vocals slide you right past the ick of it all. He's not a flashy performer, so the televoters might not pick up what he's putting down, but the jury is sure to give the technical skill on display here the love it deserves.

Ireland: " Doomsday Blue " by Bambie Thug

"Doomsday Blue" is an example of my favorite Eurovision phenomenon – the underdog glow-up. When Bambie Thug's queer, witchy mix of metal and melody won them the right to compete for Ireland, there were plenty of rolled eyes, clucked tongues and shrugged shoulders. "Too weird," they said. "Too dark," they said. But somewhere on their way to Sweden they upped their game and have arrived at an even weirder and darker stage performance that's, well, spellbinding. The spell in question is a hex, to be sure – the singer deftly switches between summoning black magic to torment an ex-lover ("Avada Kedavra/I speak to destroy") and murmuring a light, sweet tune of resignation and acceptance ("I guess you'd rather have a star than the moon/I guess I always underestimate you"). Bambie Thug's performance in the first semifinal electrified the crowd, and it tells a story: They dance with a demon and, in so doing, gain the ability to subdue it, and defeat it. I predict the voters at home will eat this all the way up, while the jury voters will find themselves some pearls to clutch.

Spain: " ZORRA " by Nebulossa

Strictly speaking, zorra means a female fox, but as commonly deployed, it's a coarse term for a, um, free-spirited woman, or at least a woman you don't like. You know how Old Hollywood movies used to bust out the word "vixen" – a female fox – to describe the kind of woman played by Joan Crawford and Bette Davis? It's like that, only ruder. In this song, Nebulossa does solid work not only reclaiming the word, but luxuriating in it. Translated from the Spanish: "I know I'm not who you want me to be (zorra, zorra) /I get it, it's driving you up the wall (zorra, zorra)/But this is just my nature (zorra, zorra)/Can't be bothered to change for you." Preach. In the run-up to semi-finals her vocals have proven, to put it kindly, a bit uneven, so this could go either way. The caked-up male backup dancers in thigh boots, butt-floss thongs and corsets should help smooth things over. (Confession: This song doesn't have much of a path to winning; I just like it, and the aforementioned dancers, a tremendous lot.)

Ukraine: " Teresa & Maria " by alyona alyona and Jerry Heil

Pop singer Jerry Heil and rapper alyona alyona come together for this song that urges faith and perseverance by invoking both Mother Theresa and the Virgin Mary. The risk when blending two such discrete musical approaches is that each will lose its singular character once combined, but that's not the case here. The two performers remain distinct, and they create a kind of two-sided musical conversation – a song that comments on itself. Ukraine always comes into the competition with a certain amount of international goodwill, but they also consistently stage their entries in ways that make indelible visual impressions on the home audience. Don't underestimate Ukraine, in Eurovision and in life.

Austria: " We Will Rave " by Kaleen

Several countries submitted club bangers with extended dance breaks this year. (See also: Georgia , Cyprus , Luxembourg , Malta .) But Austria's "We Will Rave" is the best of the sweaty, sexy bunch, in no small part because it's not content to serve you up just a dance break. You're not even through the first verse before the song outfits you with its own remix. No more long weeks waiting around for some DJ on Ibiza to do that heavy lifting for you – the club mix is already here, factory installed for your convenience! Also: a fake-out ending followed by a breakbeat finish? Are you kidding? Yes, it's dated – it's giving "Night at the Roxbury" – but it's also, not for nothing, catchy as hell. Why this song has a shot: Kaleen's a known and beloved Eurovision presence – a dazzling dancer who's fully capable of turning it all the way out in the live performance. Why that shot will probably go awry: Even if the home viewers eat this up, Eurovision's international juries have not been kind to dance music, as they are made up of music industry snobs – the very fuddiest of duddies – who wouldn't know a stone cold groove if it bit them squarely on their stone cold groove things.

Switzerland: " The Code " by Nemo

Eurovision oddsmakers (yes, that's a thing) say this song is one of the clear favorites to win the contest this year, which makes sense, as it's the perfect distillation of ESC 2024's whole heedlessly maximalist vibe. It's got a bit of opera, a bit of (light!) rap, some drum-and-bass EDM – it's, you know, a lot . Toss in the lyrics about performer Nemo realizing their non-binary status ("Somewhere between the 0's and 1's/That's where I found my kingdom come") and it's gonna be tough to beat. Any song crammed with this many different styles can come off like something assembled in a lab, but Nemo brings us along with them, fluidly and effortlessly sailing through each transition. If they can pull it off live, this one's got all the earmarks of a showstopper – and a winner.
