Amber (ale) is the color of our energy.

Brewing beer is a part of Detroit’s long history with cultivation and agriculture. Did you know brewing of ale and beer in Detroit started in the 1830’s? While Stroh’s ended large-scale operations in Detroit in 1985, independent breweries have been a long-standing tradition in the Motor City. Whether you’re a beer connoisseur or simply curious about Detroit’s craft beer scene, The Brewery Hop is sure to leave you with plenty to share the next time you’re clinking a glass with friends. Cheers!

FAQ’s

What happens if I miss the bus? Will the bus wait for me if I’m late?

We can’t hold the bus for you if you’re late. Sorry to be so mean about that. There’s a schedule to keep and we want everyone to have a good time.

Can I drink on the bus?

Yes, but with great power comes great responsibility. What we mean is take it easy and don’t wear the proverbial lampshade. This is a 21+ tour only. You’re on a starting and stopping bus. No, you can’t pee on the curb. Also, please only bring things with lids; no open cups. Small coolers only, since the big ones are a safety hazard. And it’s just plain illegal to take any open container on or off the bus. Drink on the bus? Sure. At the bar? Absolutely. But no drinks in the no-man’s-land in between the two. It’s the law, dude.

What about food?

We are hitting some bars that don’t have a whole lot of food options. We recommend, then, that you fuel up ahead of time and/or bring lots of snacks. Drinking and learning is hard work.

Do the breweries take credit cards?

Yes. Each of the breweries take credit cards.

What if I can’t show up? Will my friend be able to go instead?

Totally. Just let us know ahead of time via [email protected] and we’ll update your tickets with the new name or send them with your printed tickets.

Will you be selling extra seats for the bus?

Nope. Sorry. All passes gotta be bought online. There’s a limited number of seats and we want you to have plenty of room – no roof riders no matter how badass that might sound.

What about weather SNAFUs?

We live in Michigan. Sometimes Mother Nature likes to throw us a curveball. We keep safety as our highest priority. In case of gnarly weather, you’ll receive an email the day of the event with a raincheck/snowcheck date. If you cannot make the rescheduled date, you’ll get a voucher good for a future tour with us.

With every seat you purchase on one of our experiences, we will give a Detroit kid in need of a safe ride to school or after-school program.  Ride for ride .

Planning a Michigan Brewery Tour

There are so many sensational Michigan breweries to visit within our state, including cozy little microbreweries and full-on brewing companies. On this page you'll find out all about planning an exciting Michigan brewery tour (we recommend traveling with Party Bus Detroit ) and you can find out more about individual breweries via the links on your left hand side. There's never been a better time to go on a Michigan beer tour! Here's all the info you need.

Tour Michigan Breweries

As you well know, the do-it-yourself, handcrafted, and locally made trend is much more than just a passing fad, and Michigan's breweries and microbreweries are evidence of that! People love to support local businesses, and when that involves drinking delicious beers, it's even better! We've got the second oldest brewery in America right here in Frankenmuth, and on the other hand we've got some of the newest and most exciting ones too. Why not try them all?

There are so many beer lovers that are only just now discovering the variety that is really out there, and whether you're one of those newbies or someone who knows their lagers from their IPAs and then some, we just know that you will love heading out on a Michigan brewery tour! We strongly recommend Party Bus Detroit, because we have personally done business with them many times in the past and they are by far the best company in Detroit for this type of trip. True professionals in every way. We can't recommend them enough.

Frankenmuth - Tour Michigan Breweries

It's true that you could head out on your own with a bunch of friends and visit several breweries in the state, but who wants to be the designated driver on that trip? Who really wants to miss out on tasting all those amazing beers? When you rent a party bus , you not only get to travel far and wide without restrictions, but you also get to continue your party on the bus, bringing beers on board and enjoying yourself! Plus there's audio and video hookups for your entertainment, with high quality sound systems and flat screen TVs galore.

Copper Canyon - Tour Michigan Breweries

By far, some of the best reasons for heading out with a party bus for your brewery tour is that you will never have to concern yourself with the headaches of traffic and parking! We've already covered the fact that Party Bus Detroit 's professional chauffeur will be your designated driver for the evening, but beyond that you'll be dropped off at every door and you'll never have to pay for parking. The convenience and time-saving aspects of this cannot be overlooked. You'll also have total privacy on the road, with dark tinted windows to protect you from nosy folks driving by on the freeway. Party as hard as you want on the bus, and never have to worry about an audience!

BOB's - Tour Michigan Breweries

You can view a list of the best of the best Michigan breweries on the left side of this page, and by clicking on any of those links you'll be taken to a mini-review of each one as well as their contact information. We know that many of our visitors are located in the Metro Detroit area, and because of that we want to provide you with a list of the best breweries that aren't too far from us. Take a look, and click on any one of them for additional information about the establishment:

  • Woodward Avenue Brewers in Ferndale

Great Baraboo - Tour Michigan Breweries

Remember, the above list is centered on the best 15 breweries in and around Detroit, but there are so many more throughout our state. You won't believe the wonderful breweries you'll find in the Flint area, in the Kalamazoo area, in the Traverse City area, and of course in the Upper Peninsula! Our state is chock full of breweries, and if you haven't visited at least a handful of them, you really owe it to yourself to head out and discover them this very year. It's every beer-lover's dream come true! If you've got vacation time coming up, the best idea is to just head out for a multi-day tour of all these amazing breweries.

You'll find that there are subtle and not-so-subtle differences between breweries that really make them stand out from the rest. Some breweries have authentic equipment from Budapest, while others have it imported from Canada, or perhaps made right here in the good ole' USA. Some breweries are just small operations with most of the work taking place visibly behind the bar, while others have a full-on factory behind the scenes. Some are open all week long, and some only open up their tap rooms for a few select days per week. You'll want to take all of this into account when you are planning the multi-day multi-brewery tour of a lifetime!

Bastone - Tour Michigan Breweries

If you're new to the microbrewery scene, you might want to familiarize yourself with the lingo before you go. Allow us to break down the basics for you right here:

  • Hops : The primary flavoring in most beers. Comes from the hops plant. Tastes bitter.
  • ABV : Alcohol By Volume. If you want to know how strong a certain beer is, look for the ABV. A typical American beer is 4-5%. You'll find that most beers you'll encounter during your beer tour are in the 3-15% range.
  • Lager : These are the most popular beers out there, and most of the typical domestic beers like Budweiser and Miller fall into this category. There are light lagers and dark lagers, and the lighter ones tend to have less alcohol, while the darker ones have more flavor from hops and roasted barley.
  • Pilsner : A light-colored lager with European origin.
  • Ale : Ales tend to be lightly carbonated, low in alcohol, and with more of a malty hops flavor.
  • English Bitter : Known as the king of ales.
  • Brown Ale : Tend to have a fruity or nutty flavor.
  • Porter : Darker ale with rich chocolate flavors.
  • Stout : Often considered as a separate category, a stout is technically an ale. Guinness is a great example of a stout, with a dark color, creamy head, and barley flavor.
  • Hefeweizen : A German wheat beer.
  • Belgian/French/Trappist : Higher alcohol content and stronger flavors. Trappist ales are brewed by monks.

It's hard to explain the complexities of beer drinking to someone who has not actually adventured out into the breweries for themselves. Once you have tasted at least a couple of each category that we listed above, you'll begin to understand the nuances of each flavor, and soon you'll find yourself intrigued by everything that is out there just waiting to be discovered. Once you know which category of beer you prefer, you'll know which section of the beer list to head for each time you go out to a microbrewery. And as you get to know all the flavors within it, you'll craft your list of favorites.

Whether you're a newbie or an old hand at the microbrewery scene, we recommend asking for a personal tour of the breweries that you visit. You may want to call in advance to arrange this, because some breweries and microbreweries don't offer tours on the fly. There's nothing quite like meeting the brew masters in person and finding out about their passions for the craft. Seeing the equipment being used is a real thrill, and understanding the amount of work that goes into creating the perfect pint is really a great thing. It can be quite a learning experience to get a personal brewery tour, and to have several of them in one day can be a real adventure!

Some of the breweries on our list also have plenty of space for private events including wedding receptions, so if you have something special coming up in terms of celebrations, you just may want to consider hosting it at a microbrewery. It's delightfully untraditional, and if you and your bride-to-be or groom-to-be both love beer, there's no better way to mark your nuptials than with an exciting indulgence in your favorite beverage! You can learn about some of the newer brews that are out there, or taste some of the oldest and most beloved ones. And your guests will love the experience too.

Corner Brewery - Tour Michigan Breweries

Again, we have to reiterate that the best way to see all of these breweries (or at least a generous handful of them!) is to head out in a party bus courtesy of Party Bus Detroit . You'll certainly want to brings some brews home with you, and you'll be able to do just that thanks to the built-in bars on the buses that are stocked with both ice and cups. If you need extra space, there's plenty of room to bring your own coolers so that you and all your friends can bring hundreds of brewskis home! And best of all, it's perfectly legal to drink on the bus and there's no concern about finding a designated driver. You've never known the joys of having a professional chauffeur until you are traveling to all of Michigan's best breweries...

If you're interested in speaking with someone from Party Bus Detroit about planning your Michigan breweries tour, all you've got to do is head over to their website or give them a call at 248-630-5605. Now, we invite you to view all the pages of our site to find out more about the best breweries in the state. We hope that you find the information here very valuable. Thank you so much for visiting, and have a great brewery trip!

How to enjoy 48 hours on the Detroit Brew Trail

Story by: max white | photos by: emily berger, handlebar detroit, and brew line tours.

Metro Detroit is one of the best areas in the country for beer, and a variety of breweries in Detroit and the surrounding counties make a great stop for beer fans and fans of fun everywhere.

If you have 48 hours to spend in metro Detroit trying beer and enjoying the sights, here’s how you can spend it.

brewery tour detroit

Day 1 – Downtown Detroit & Wayne County

Before you begin your custom brew adventures, sign up to get your free Detroit Brew Trail pass to see all the participating breweries, collect check-ins and win prizes. Now that the important stuff is out of the way, let’s get to the trail. Starting in Detroit, make sure to spend some time exploring the Downtown area seeing the beautiful architecture in the city and walking the Detroit Riverwalk. On that walk, start from Hart Plaza and make your way about a mile to Atwater Brewery , right off of the Riverfront near Robert C. Valade Park .

The brewery was founded in 1997 in the Rivertown district, and they have a beer for everyone. Their most famous beers are the Dirty Blonde and the Vanilla Java Porter. Dirty Blonde is a wheat ale at 4.5%.while Vanilla Java Porter is an English-style porter. Both are available year-round.

After your stop Downtown and at Atwater, head to Midtown for some shopping and a stop at the Detroit Historical Museum to see some of Detroit’s iconic history.

After, a stop at Founders Brewing Company is a must. One of the more iconic Michigan beer companies with locations in Grand Rapids and Detroit, you can get Detroit-only varieties of their beer. Their Detroit-specific taps can change, so we don’t want to suggest something that might be gone. You can never go wrong with their All Day IPA. For those looking for something lighter, they have Mas Agave, their hard seltzer, or the Solid Gold.

Wayne County is next as the Saturday continues. If you have time, The Henry Ford Museum is one of the most iconic museums in all of the country, with some major historical items from America – including the chair Abraham Lincoln was sitting in when he was shot, several presidential limos, a full-size train and so much more.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Dearborn Brewing (@dearbornbrewing)

Right down the street from The Henry Ford is Dearborn Brewing, a small microbrewery that was the first in the city. Dearborn Brewing offers a variety of different beers and even hard selzters. Some of their beers are themed, including the “Model IP’A’” named after one of Henry Ford’s first vehicles, and the “10w40 Imperial Oatmeal Stout,” named after a motor oil weight.

Finally, head a few miles away to Downey Brewing, a great place to end the night. Located in an industrial district in Dearborn, Downey has great beers and a huge area to have some fun. On top of board games, you can find darts, foosball and much more.

From start to finish, customize your trail throughout the metro Detroit area and take in all of the craft local and state varieties of beer of Michigan.

Day 2 – Oakland & Macomb Counties

After a great day in Wayne County, it’s time to head north and west to Oakland and Macomb counties.

Start the day around Lake St. Clair in St. Clair Shores at the Ford House , the former home of Edsel and Eleanor Ford. There are things to see inside the house and beautiful grounds surrounding the house. After, head over to Copper Hop Brewing Co., which often has food trucks for some food and a great rotating selection of beers.

On your way toward Oakland County, stop at Kuhnhenn Brewing Co. for a flight. They offer beer, cider and wine. They’ve been brewing 186 gallons a day and have been around for more than 20 years.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by House of Mac (@detroithouseofmac)

Not far from Kuhnhenn is Cadillac Straits Brewing Company, the first brewery in Madison Heights. They have a variety of beers, cider, meads and seltzer, and is a great stop between lunch and dinner.

Next, head just a couple miles south toward Ferndale and do some shopping with local sellers at the Rust Belt Market, which has more than a dozen different shops. Follow it up with a stop for a cocktail down the street at Valentine Distilling Co. and finish it at Ferndale Project for dinner. They have a variety of New England IPAs and a great patio to take in a warm metro Detroit night.

There are so many options for drinks and fun in metro Detroit, but if you only have 48 hours, this is the best way to spend it on the Detroit Brew Trail !

The Top 10 Breweries in Detroit

brewery tour detroit

As any beer drinker knows, Michigan has long been ahead of the curve when it comes to craft beer. But what you may not know is that Motor City is having its own craft-beer moment.

In addition to the following 10 breweries—all of which have taprooms where you can sample their beer and make purchases, and many offer food menus, too—two Michigan breweries have opened taprooms in Detroit. Jolly Pumpkin—based out of Ann Arbor— taps its beer in Midtown , also serving pizza, while Founders Brewing Co. (a Grand Rapids brewery) operates a Midtown taproom , with beers exclusive to that location, including its Detroit IPA.

Eastern Market Brewing Co.

Courtesy of Eastern Market Beer

Located in the year-round Eastern Market, this brewery is in perfect pitch with the country’s largest historic public-market district. When co-founder Dayne Bartscht moved back to Michigan from England, he lured in some beer-loving friends to open the brewery in 2017. Many beers fold in local ingredients, including Final Harvest, which has 100 pounds of squash from a local farm, and a beer called Dees Bees Knees, including Detroit City Distillery spirits.

Detroit Beer Co.

One of Detroit’s first craft breweries, Detroit Beer Co. , opened in 2003 and brews on-site at its downtown Detroit taproom where, at any given time, between seven and nine different beers are poured. Ranging from an American light lager (Broadway Light) to a hearty amber ale (Rye Barrel Aged Dwarf), it’s all brewed with food pairings in mind, whether it’s the chorizo-avocado pizza or Hair of the Dog—a burger topped with a fried egg, cheese, and bacon). Saturday and Sunday brunch mean unique eats like smoked-salmon pizza or French toast rolled in Cinnamon Toast Crunch.

Granite City Food & Brewery

With locations throughout 13 Midwestern states, Granite City Food & Brewery’s Detroit presence (one of three Michigan locations) is within the Renaissance Center, a block north of the Detroit River and the Riverwalk. Food is crafted in an open kitchen (cue amazing smells!) and the beer (a mix of signature and seasonal options, including Hustle, a coffee cream ale) brewed on site. Locals love the Lawless Brunch with a donut-creation station, build-your-own breakfast sandwiches, and Bloody Mary just to your liking. Still, the dinner specials, which range from meatloaf to jambalaya, are also wildly popular.

Batch Brewing Company

 Courtesy of Batch Brewing Company

Batch Brewing Company’s taproom Corktown taproom serves not only beer but also Michigan pub-style food with a global twist—like jerk-chicken pasties or fried German-style potatoes—with some Vietnamese, Mexican, Greek, and Thai dishes thrown in. Co-founders Jason Williams and Stephen Roginson left corporate jobs to follow their dream, opening the brewery in 2015 after a successful crowdfunding campaign. Around 18 beers are on tap, from a farmhouse ale to the Dicksmasher Stout.

Brew Detroit

Brewing out of Corktown since 2014, Brew Detroit —with its “true to the beer” slogan—operates in a 68,000 square-foot facility. Visit the taproom, which is also home to Michigan’s largest contract brewery, allowing a place for budding brewers to get their start, and you can sample from 30 different taps, indulging in your preference for sours, lagers, ales or stouts. There’s even a nitro-stout option (Cold Brew Detroit). Tours take place every Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m., 3 p.m., and 5 p.m. and include a pint of beer in a take-home glass.

Brewery Faisan

Detroit’s newest brewery and taproom debuted in October of this year, in the Islandview neighborhood, just north of the Detroit River. Brewery Faisan’s thrust, in the hands of founders (and former homebrewers) Paul and Rachel Szlaga, is all about brewing Belgian-style beers. This includes a wheat beer, tripel, and raspberry Saison, plus a coffee stout and two IPAs. At any time, seven beers from Brewery Faisan are on tap. Curious about the brewery’s name? It’s a reference to the pheasants that live nearby. (In French, faisan means pheasant.)

Motor City Brewing Works

Courtesy of Motor City Brewing Works

Since 1994—yes, way before many of Detroit’s breweries debuted— Motor City Brewing Works ’ has been in the heart of downtown Detroit. Beer riffs on Detroit neighborhoods and references, such as the Corktown Stout. One of the food menu’s highlights is brick-oven pizza, with 10 specialty pies, like Roasted Pear & Fig or Maui Wowie. On warm days, outdoor seating is available at communal-style picnic tables as well as on the deck.

Woodward Avenue Brewers

Technically in the Detroit suburb of Ferndale, and not the city proper, Woodward Avenue Brewers —which wants you to call it WAB—has been brewing beer since 1997. About 10 beers are on tap at its taproom, or you can opt not to decide which pint to order by going for the Five Beer Sampler (flight of five four-ounce beers). Whether you crave bananas and clove (hallmarks of the Wiezengeist-Hefeweizen) or a Caribbean-inspired stout (what the Aggrovator-Tropical Stout seeks to emulate), this brewery’s got you covered. A food menu of pizza, sandwiches, and pub grub is also served.

Liberty Street Brewing Company

Specializing in small-batch brewing, from light (clementine with lemon thyme) to Starkweather Stout, Liberty Street Brewing Company is in the Detroit suburb of Plymouth. The brewery’s been in business since 2008, and you can sip the beers inside its taproom, tucked into a building dating back to the 1890s. While the food menu is limited, the owners encourage you to support other local restaurants by having your order delivered to the taproom.

Atwater Brewery & Tap House

Courtesy of Atwater Brewery & Tap House

With three Michigan locations—Grand Rapids, the Detroit suburb of Grosse Pointe Park, and a 1919 factory warehouse in Detroit’s Rivertown neighborhood—Atwater Brewery’s roots are in Detroit. Beer offerings are diverse, from grapefruit flavors in the Going Steady IPA to Pumpkin Spice Latte Ale. You can even take a tour of the Detroit location on Saturdays at 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Like most breweries, the taproom cuisine skews German and pub-style (like brats, wings, and chili), but there are also signature pizzas and tacos. Try a “dessert beer,” like the Decadent Chocolate Stout or Vanilla Java Porter.

For more than a decade, Grand Rapids has proudly held the title of Beer City USA . In 2009, author and homebrewing pioneer Charlie Papazian created the Beer City USA poll, aiming to gauge “community spirit and support for beer businesses” during what he describes as America’s craft beer boom. This initiative laid the groundwork for celebrating cities with thriving beer cultures, and in 2012, Grand Rapids was put on the map. After 2013, Papazian retired the poll, stating that it had “served its purpose,” leaving Grand Rapids as the reigning Beer City USA champion.

In light of the city’s notoriety, the city has become a destination for beer lovers from all over the country, drawn to attractions, such as the Winter Beer Festival organized by the Michigan Brewers Guild , which draws in more than 100 breweries.

Here are 11 breweries offer distinct styles and experiences that are worth a weekend trip from the Motor City.

City Built Brewing Company

Home of the West-coast style IPA beer collaboration, Mi Gente — a campaign similar in concept to the  “Black is Beautiful”  project launched by Weathered Souls Brewing Co. of Texas in 2020 — intended to celebrate contributions made by Latinx brewers. A portion of proceeds going in support of the local Latino community. This downtown brewery offers a selection of craft beer, cider, wine, hard seltzer, and nonalcoholic options. The pub menu offers Puerto Rican-inspired fare of yuca fries, tostones, and smoked pork tacos — sofrito-braised smoked pork, black bean and corn salsa, queso fresco, and a sprinkling of cilantro. City Built’s kitchen is open Wednesday through Saturday (they’re adding Sunday service soon). On Mondays and Tuesdays, the brewery hosts a variety of food trucks and other food vendors that pop up outside or utilize the kitchen space.

Located inside the converted historic Engine House No. 9, this baseball-themed microbrewery is a cornerstone of Grand Rapids’ westside since 2012. Serving as the first working brewery in the area since Prohibition, it holds a special place in the city’s brewing legacy. Expect a variety of styles, including lighter ales and lagers, IPAs, malt-forward browns and stouts, fruited sours, hard seltzers, and cider. Mitten Brewing Company also operates an offsite brewing facility, taprooms in Northport and Saugatuck, and a takeout pizza kitchen in Rockford.

The People’s Cider Co.

Proprietor Jason Lümmen is crafting some of the finest dry and barrel-aged cider in the state. And during the warmer summer months, expect to chill out with a cider slushy. Although it’s not a typical taproom serving beer, this is a must-visit for beverage connoisseurs. Cider, with its unique flavors, truly embodies the essence of west Michigan’s agricultural bounty.

As summer nears, state tourism businesses pin hopes on winning more Pure Michigan funding

Fudge maker Alex Gaither of Kilwin's in Traverse City is watched by visitors on the sidewalk in the downtown shopping district on Sunday, April 21, 2024. With consumer spending remaining strong and COVID-19 receding, businesses in Michigan's tourist communities are optimistic about the upcoming summer season.

As Michigan gears up for another summer tourism season, businesses are hoping to cash in on what they expect will be strong demand throughout the state.

On Mackinac Island, visitors will notice numerous changes, including a two-year restoration at the Grand Hotel and the reopening of the Inn at Stonecliffe following a two-year, $30 million, property-wide transformation. In the Traverse City area, four hotels are expected to open in the next year to accommodate additional out-of-town guests in the popular tourist spot along Lake Michigan.

Operators are hopeful the summer season will be better for tourism in the state after emerging from a mild winter that negatively impacted snow-related businesses, particularly ski hills and nearby lodging. Hospitality and tourism leaders, meanwhile, are seeking the funding they say the state’s Pure Michigan campaign needs to keep visitors — and revenue — flowing into the state.

“We have the best state and I know we have the best campaign,” said Justin Winslow, president and CEO of the Michigan Restaurant & Lodging Association. “We just need to make sure it's in front of as many eyeballs as possible.”

Pushing for promotion funds

Officials with Travel Michigan said earlier this month that results from the state’s Pure Michigan campaign show that travel is on par with pre-pandemic numbers and consistent with national trends. A group of hospitality and tourism leaders would like to keep that momentum going.

Earlier this year, the Michigan Hospitality & Tourism Alliance was formed from a collaboration of statewide and regional organizations seeking to boost funding for the state’s Pure Michigan campaign. The alliance is seeking $50 million for the fiscal year, which would more than triple the current funding.

“We as an industry maybe have become a little more disparate since the pandemic,” said Winslow, a founding leader of the alliance. “We all fought individual battles and had such an existential threat to hospitality, travel and tourism overall. We all went back to our own corners just out of survival instincts. And I don't think we were all communicating what we needed to for the success of all of us overall, and it shows up most notably in what happened to the Pure Michigan budget."

The effort has found some support. On Thursday, the Michigan House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Economic Development, and Lifelong Learning, chaired by Rep. Will Snyder, D-Muskegon, proposed a $50 million budget for Pure Michigan.

Pure Michigan's tourism advertising funding has decreased to about $15 million from roughly $40 million during the past two budget cycles, Winslow said: “That's just far short, I think, of what's necessary to meet the demand out there and the infrastructure that we've created as a state.

“And so I think we're leaving a lot of money on the table for Michiganders by not investing more in the Pure Michigan tourism campaign. And the alliance is trying to create a more unified and hopefully powerful place to make that message heard.”

Earlier this year, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer proposed $20 million for the Make it in Michigan Competitiveness Fund “to build off the iconic Pure Michigan campaign, on top of the $15 million in existing funding for the program, with a focus on talent attraction, labor retention and relocating to Michigan.” It is unclear if any of those dollars would be spent on promotional spending.

The alliance also announced earlier this year the creation of a bipartisan, bicameral “Hospitality & Tourism Caucus" that will work with the alliance to better understand challenges and opportunities impacting the industry. Those members include state Sen. John Damoose, R-Harbor Springs; Sen. Kevin Hertel, D-St. Clair Shores; Rep. Will Snyder, D-Muskegon, and Rep. Nancy DeBoer, R-Holland.

“The travel, tourism and hospitality industry drives the Michigan economy, and nowhere is this more true than in my District in northern Michigan and the Eastern U.P.,” said Damoose, the caucus co-chair, in a statement. “Given the unique challenges faced by this industry in the past several years — from Covid to regulatory burdens — it is critical that legislators come together to help.”

A 2024 SMARInsights Advertising Effectiveness Research for Pure Michigan report released this month showed that Pure Michigan advertising influenced more than 1.5 million leisure trips to Michigan from the national, regional and in-state markets targeted by the campaign. The report showed that out of the $16.9 million spent on advertising in 2023, Michigan saw a return of $9.21 in state tax revenue for each $1 invested.

“I guess it just goes to show that if there’s less advertising, we’ll have to rely on other means to fight for potential business loss,” said Tim Hygh, CEO of Mackinac Island Tourism.

The campaign also has an impact for Metro Detroit, said Christopher Moyer of Visit Detroit, an alliance member: "Every dollar that comes from Chicago to Detroit is one dollar that didn't exist in our economy before but now is here."

Moyer said the requested $50 million is a small fraction of the state’s overall budget — $82 billion for the current fiscal year — and “returns 10X back for communities throughout the state, for small businesses, for union workers, for the hotel workers in the city of Detroit who are part of the Unite Here labor union. They go to work because of visitors.”

Investing in upgrades

On Mackinac Island, businesses are hoping for another strong year when the island opens in May. Among the latest projects is the $30 million transformation of the Inn at Stonecliffe. The property will welcome guests starting in June.

The former mansion, built in 1904, and its 150-acre estate have had numerous uses over the years, including as a ski resort, college and hotel.

The Pulte Family Charitable Foundation took ownership of the property in fall 2022, closed it and restored the mansion, refreshed the summer house and added three three-bedroom cottages and a fourth one-bedroom cottage, said Kevin Doyle, the foundation's chief operating officer.

“All the rooms are kind of a custom bespoke feel,” he said. “In the mansion, there's 16 rooms. Every one of them is different. The summer house, there's 32 rooms. Every floor has a different feel. The mansion is more of a romantic charm feel. And the summer houses is a little brighter family, cheerful feel, if you will.”

The foundation also added a wellness center, two pools, a barbecue pavilion and a four-season event venue overlooking the Straits of Mackinac. The foundation acquired the nearby apple orchard and plans to offer beekeeping lessons and apple picking, Doyle said.

In Grand Traverse County, four hotels are expected to open this year or early next year, including an Avid hotel and a Fairfield Inn, said Trevor Tkach, president and CEO of Traverse City Tourism.

“I think that’s the testament to the commitment and the belief that demand will continue to grow for destinations like Traverse City,” he said. The area held its first International Fireworks Championship in 2023, and will expand this year as a two-day event. Another draw is the nearly 50 wineries in the region.

In Grand Rapids, Doug Small, president and CEO of Experience Grand Rapids, said they are projecting a 1.5% to 3% increase in visitors this year based on a leveling-off of room rates and occupancy: "What I like to say is, 'let's manage expectations.' Because ‘22 and ‘23 were so good … You can't grow that every year. You can maybe maintain it. So we maintain it through this year, or even increase by 1%, that's still a really good year.”

At Brys Estate in Traverse City, Patrick Brys said his family-owned winery is pretty well-staffed for the summer season. The year-round staff hovers around 25 employees. At peak times, the winery employs about 100 people.

The 155-acre property includes a winery, 44 acres of grapes, a guest house and a "secret garden" with 6,000 lavender plants. Business at the winery is up from pre-pandemic levels, with 1,000 daily visitors during peak times.

“People coming up can choose from a lot of different activities as far as wine tasting or specialized wine tours that take people out in the vineyard on stretch golf carts we call our wine wagons,” he said. “Obviously, they can visit our secret garden and lavender operation. And there's picnic areas down there. They can browse a lot of the products that are made from all the distilling of the lavender oils.”

Staffing up for summer

Hiring is also on the minds of tourist destinations and seasonal venues throughout the state. Mackinac Island needs about 5,000 workers on the island every year, Hygh said, with about 1,200 coming to work through H-2B guest worker visa.

“Our members will put an enormous effort in to get by. I think we're going to be fine," he said. "There's nothing that sticks out this year that shows that we would be down, but we continue to just keep advocating and fighting for more H-2B visas. That’s a constant.”

At Rare Bird Brewpub in Traverse City, co-founder Tina Schuett said they are preparing for an influx of visitors as the weather warms. People are drawn to the food and beer scene as well as nearby natural attractions, such as Sleeping Bear Dunes.

To accommodate extra visitors, the pub will expand beyond its year-round staff of 30 to about 40.

“We hire some seasonal staff, usually younger people, high school or college filling some of those gaps that we need just kind of support staff,” Schuett said. “It’s really tricky getting all the staff that we need because everybody in this town is fighting for the same employees and also with COVID we saw a lot of people leaving the industry. "

Schuett’s looking forward to the stressful and exhausting busyness of the summer season, she acknowledged: “It's when we make our money for the year. Our staff love it because they make a lot of money and they do really well.”

Rory McIlroy sang Journey in New Orleans. He also won the golf tournament

AVONDALE, LOUISIANA - APRIL 28: (L-R) Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland and Shane Lowry of Ireland celebrate the final round of the Zurich Classic of New Orleans at TPC Louisiana on April 28, 2024 in Avondale, Louisiana. (Photo by Chris Graythen/Getty Images)

NEW ORLEANS — Rory McIlroy is on the TPC Louisiana 19th green stage with a beer in one hand and a microphone in the other. He’s got Mardi Gras beads around his neck standing next to one of his best friends, Shane Lowry, and the drunken New Orleans crowd keeps chanting.

“Rory! Rory! Rory!”

“Do you know any songs from the 80s?” the bandleader asks.

And then Journey starts playing.

The four-time major champ belted out “Don’t Stop Believing” early Sunday evening, tossing his head back to put his chest into the notes. Lowry just laughed and drank his beer watching his buddy make a fool of himself. As he walked off moments later, Lowry answered why he didn’t join — “I would have sung much better.”

McIlroy just won a golf tournament. And he needed to win a golf tournament. But far, far more than he needed anything on a scorecard, he needed this week. McIlroy needed to have fun.

This is not a drill. Rory McIlroy singing Don't Stop Believing pic.twitter.com/y5PkEDoqo4 — Brody Miller (@BrodyAMiller) April 28, 2024

This all began with a “really drunken lunch” after their Ryder Cup win last fall. McIlroy asked Lowry if they could team up for the Zurich Classic — the PGA Tour ’s only team event. Lowry has played this event before but, fearful of rejection, never asked McIlroy to team up. McIlroy sent Lowry a Christmastime text confirming. He was coming to New Orleans.

Fast forward to Saturday night, and just off Bourbon Street in the French Quarter at a classic white tablecloth Creole joint called Arnaud’s, McIlroy and Lowry received a standing ovation from the other diners. This isn’t even some casual weekend in Louisiana. It’s Jazz Fest. It’s NFL Draft week. The Pelicans are in the playoffs. Yet the people were so psyched to have the No. 2 player in the world they filled TPC Louisiana with the largest galleries anyone can recall and applauded them at restaurants. One TV reporter joked the last athlete to receive that was Reggie Bush nearly two decades ago.

“It was weird for me,” Lowry said. “That stuff doesn’t happen to me.”

“It doesn’t happen to me, either!” McIlroy joked.

“He’s getting old,” Lowry said with a cheeky grin. “But he can still move the needle a little bit.  Rory brings a crowd, and people love him.”

A little context. McIlroy isn’t having a very good season. It became a running gag last week that Scottie Scheffler’s caddie, Ted Scott, is outearning McIlroy in 2024. And McIlroy has been having a stressful few years. He was the face of the PGA Tour in its war with LIV and the most public-facing policy board member. Then, he got blindsided by the PGA Tour entering into a framework agreement with the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia (LIV’s owners), calling himself a “sacrificial lamb” as they sent him to speak to the media the next day.

He then reportedly lost a power battle over the future of the tour to Patrick Cantlay and decided to leave the board, with Sports Illustrated reporting Cantlay and others like Tiger Woods and Jordan Spieth focused more on catering to the tour’s elites. McIlroy then changed his tune and campaigned for unification with LIV. He rubbed people the wrong way, criticizing Spieth publicly for saying the PGA Tour didn’t “need” the Saudis. He consistently made comments about the desire for money ruining the sport. He got in an awkward incident at the Players Championship with playing partners Spieth and Viktor Hovland.

Oh, and the golf has suffered. It’s all relative. He’s still top 30 nearly every week, but has just one PGA Tour finish better than 19th all season. When he finished T22 at the Masters two weeks ago, he got questions about whether he needed to blow up his swing and do a full reset.

Then, he went to New Orleans.

McIlroy was not locked in this week, at least not for most of the week. This week was about having fun with his old buddy Shane. They didn’t even practice when they got in Tuesday because the course was too busy, so they messed around at the chipping green instead. During the Wednesday Pro-Am, they hardly even played every other shot. They seemed to hit when they felt like it while walking and talking the rest. They crushed chargrilled oysters from Drago’s on the 10th hole and teased each other.

Who knows how worried they even were as they entered the seventh hole Sunday five back of the leaders. Yes, they’re competitors and want to win, but they were just going with the flow.

Then, McIlroy got hot. Playing alternate shot, they birdied four of the next five holes to get one back. McIlroy dropped a saucy little club twirl that he hasn’t shown in years on a perfect iron shot on 14. And right around that time, he clearly started to want it a bit more. When he put his drive on 16 into a bunker, he bent over and held his head down for a full minute in frustration.

But no worries. Lowry hit a perfect wedge from the bunker to the center of the green, and McIlroy hit a wide-breaking putt to take a share of the lead.

On the par-3 17th, Lowry’s tee shot flew into the crowd and he later missed a tough par putt. He was visibly disappointed with himself, but McIlroy speedily chased him off the green to say, “Hey, Shane. That was a good putt.”

“Rory is there backing me up this week,” Lowry said, “and he was a great teammate, and he made me believe in myself. It was good to have him there to do that.”

They then birdied 18 to send it to a playoff, and thanks to a missed putt by Martin Trainer in the playoff, McIlroy won his 25th PGA Tour tournament and Lowry earned himself a spot in the remaining PGA Tour signature events. Teamwork.

brewery tour detroit

Yeah, maybe McIlroy was the key to the win this week, but there’s a chance Lowry was the key to a much-needed week for McIlroy. Because he admitted this week was about getting away from the stress.

“Absolutely,” he said. “The reason that Shane and I both started to play golf is because we thought it was fun at some stage in our life.  I think sort of reinjecting a little bit of that fun back into it in a week like this week, it can always help.”

And as the event finished, tournament organizers could be seen celebrating the coup of one of the game’s biggest stars winning and possibly coming back next year to defend his title. This isn’t exactly one of the tour’s bigger events. They’d kill for McIlroy in the field again. So he was asked, “Has anyone started trying to sell you on returning?”

“I don’t think they need to try,” McIlroy said. “I think we’re coming back.”
