In the Zone is the fourth studio album by American recording artist Britney Spears . It was released on November 16, 2003, by Jive Records . Following the end of the Dream Within a Dream Tour in July 2002 and her break-up with Justin Timberlake , Spears announced she would take a six-month break from her career. She started working on the album in November 2002, with producers such as Bloodshy & Avant , R. Kelly , Tricky Stewart , Moby , Guy Sigsworth and The Matrix . Musically, In the Zone is a dance -oriented album that incorporates elements of various genres, such as house , trip hop and hip-hop . It features instrumentation from guitars, drums, synthesizers, strings and Middle Eastern instruments.

Spears began writing songs for In the Zone while touring around the world, despite not knowing the direction of the album. She started to experiment with different producers, trying to find those who she had chemistry with. Spears stated she was an autobiographical songwriter, although not the point were she felt self-exploited. She also explained that the sexual nature of In the Zone was subconscious and happened while she was in the process of developing the album. The topic for the songs range from love, dancing, empowerment, and in the case of songs such as " Touch of My Hand ", sex and masturbation .

Following its release, In the Zone received mixed reviews from critics. Some appreciated the album, calling it a strong and confident pop record, while complimenting the mix of different styles and Spears's skills as a songwriter. Others, however, criticized it for what they perceived as distant and processed vocals. Commercially, In the Zone became an international success, debuting atop of the charts in France and the United States, and peaking inside the top ten in eleven countries. In the United States, she became the first female artist to have four consecutive number-one albums. In the Zone went on to become the eighth best selling album of 2003.

Four singles were released from the album: " Me Against the Music ", " Toxic " and " Everytime " became worldwide hits, peaking at number one in Australia and reaching top five positions worldwide. To promote In the Zone , Spears performed the songs in a number of television appearances and also embarked on The Onyx Hotel Tour . The album and its music videos are largely seen by critics as the end of her transition from teen pop star to a more adult female artist. In 2009, Amy Schriefer of NPR listed In the Zone as one of The 50 Most Important Recording of the Decade, calling it "a primer on the sound of pop in the '00s".

" Me Against the Music " (featuring Madonna ), the album's lead single, reached number one in international countries such as Denmark and Spain. The music video features Spears chasing Madonna in a nightclub. Their kiss at the end of the video is similar to the one they had during the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards.

" Toxic ", the album's second single, is one of Spears' biggest songs. It charted in the top five in 15 countries, and reached number one in Australia, Brazil and the United Kingdom. Its music video is possibly Spears' most expensive (costing $1 million).

" Everytime ", the album's third single, was apparently a response to Justin Timberlake's song "Never Again". The song is considered one of Britney's best ballads. The concept of the song's music video was controversial.

" Outrageous ", the album's fourth and final single, charted in the United States and did not reach full success due to not having a music video or promotion. A video was planned, but Spears hurt her knee and had to undergo arthroscopic surgery. The video was canceled, as well as The Onyx Hotel Tour.

Inside 'Britney Spears: The Zone,' An Instagram-Friendly Mecca For Diehard Fans

Just as the phrase "It's Britney, bitch" knocks you back at the onset of "Gimme More," the pink exterior of Britney Spears: The Zone practically blinds you as you turn the corner on 3rd Street. The Zone, an interactive pop-up experience opening in Los Angeles this Friday (January 31), announces itself loudly, with a flowery, Pepto Bismol-pink mural featuring a lifelike recreation of Spears's snake-assisted "I'm a Slave 4 U" strut and a portrait from her Piece of Me promo shoot. Even the parking lot lines have been repainted pink. In this house, it's all Britney.

The Zone is situated inside an old Kmart and utilizes all 30,000 square feet to bring the living pop icon's most beloved eras and music videos to life. When you walk through the doors, you're smack-dab in the middle of a giant retail shop selling everything Britney : old tour tees, "Work Bitch" hats, pastel pink basketballs, Britney Funko dolls, and more. There are tall display cases with memorable Spears costumes, including the adorable dress she wore as an 11-year-old contestant on Star Search , the orange studded bodysuit from "Till The World Ends," the blue flight attendant getup from "Toxic," and her Pepsi race car uniform.

"Obviously we had Britney's blessing, and she was so excited about it that she donated these to us," Jeff Delson, lead producer for The Zone and CEO of Black Sky Creative, told MTV News about the costumes. "She wanted people to see them. And obviously show that she's supporting it because she's helping provide costumes and memorabilia throughout the space that fans can see."

The Zone Los Angeles

The experience begins in earnest when you step into a classroom where vintage Britney Barbie dolls are displayed on the bookshelves and "Hit me baby one more time" is scrawled across the blackboard. There, visitors are greeted with a video message from Felicia Cullotta, Spears's former assistant and righthand woman who made a cameo as the principal in "...Baby One More Time." Seeing her is a total blast from the past, and one that diehard fans will appreciate — they'd recognize Fe's face anywhere.

"We reached out to Felicia. She loves Britney so much, and she agreed to do it for us," Delson said of her involvement. "She is the sweetest, funniest, cutest person and was so excited to do it for Britney's fans and for Britney. All those little touches that really feel authentic are really important."

From there, you wander a series of 10 rooms, including "Britney High," a love letter to "...Baby One More Time," where you can drop a note for Brit in her locker; a trip to Mars for "Oops!...I Did It Again," which includes a life-size astronaut who's ready to propose to you with the Heart of the Ocean necklace (" Aww , he shouldn't have"); and a dark and stormy "Stronger" room featuring a sequence of infinity mirrors and metal chairs, where only the brave will attempt that strikingly complex chair choreo.

A nifty installation in the "Me Against the Music" room fulfills your dream of letting you be the Madonna in a dance-off against Spears. "Toxic" takes you on a Brit-themed airplane, complete with a champagne cart, "Toxic"-emblazoned barf bags, and a pink telephone that, when answered, has Spears's voice cooing "It's Britney, bitch" in your ear before she abruptly hangs up. The "Piece Of Me" room lets you pose on a red carpet and take your own tabloid photo, which is gets splashed onto an Us Weekly -style magazine cover. All the while, guests swipe their RFID wristbands to take part in photo and video installations that they can download on the pop-up's app.

Each of the rooms is based on an iconic Spears music video, with two notable exceptions. The first is the jungle-themed "I'm A Slave 4 U" room, based on Spears's throwback VMA performance, with footage from that iconic moment playing on a shimmering screen that looks like a waterfall. Fans can pose inside of a cage with a stuffed yellow python ( hi, Banana! ), and a giant snake with blinking eyes is coiled around the humid, misty space. In a true full-circle moment, a bunch of Spears's former dancers and choreographers were invited to The Zone earlier this week, and they busted out the O.G. "Slave 4 U" moves, like it was 2001 all over again.

The other exception is the Blackout chapel, a candle-lit space dedicated to Spears's 2007 cult album. As Blackout plays on loop, you can pray to Godney at a stained-glass altar that lights up when you kneel in front of it. Shockingly — or not, depending on how big of a Blackout stan you are — Delson says they've already gotten requests from fans who want to get married there.

"We've had multiple requests from fans for weddings, for birthday parties," he said. "People just love it so much and they want time to explore the space in a special way and really feel like they're in the world." (For the record, if you want to do a whole In The Zone wedding experience, the "Circus" room — which houses a giant ball pit, carnival games, a Tarot card reader, and the bikes from the Circus tour — would be a bomb reception space.)

The goal of The Zone, Delson said, is simply to honor Spears in fan-centric fashion. "For us, it's about doing it right, being fans, and making sure you're really capturing the details," he said. "Her fans love her so much that they would know if the details weren't right or things weren't aligned. We spent a lot of time, two years, to make sure that everything's perfect.

"We're such huge fans of Britney, that when we wanted to create an experience where you can step into music videos of an artist, she was our first choice because these videos are so iconic and the ones that are so etched into our thoughts and memories," Delson added. "When we went to her, we were excited that she wanted to do it."

As Delson notes, Spears is certainly a trailblazer in pop music and in industry trends as a whole. She was the first young, current artist to bring her own residency show to Las Vegas — long before Gwen Stefani, Jonas Brothers, Lady Gaga, or Christina Aguilera did the same thing. Delson predicts this kind of interactive pop-up experience will similarly become a trend in the pop sphere, but it's about picking the right artists and catering to the fans. "I think there will be a lot of people that will try to attempt to do this," he said, "but she's leading the charge."

Certainly, being a Spears fan has had its ups and downs as of late — many supporters have been worried about the pop star's wellbeing in the midst of the hearings about her conservatorship . Ultimately, though, The Zone is the kind of experience that reminds you how fun it is to love Britney's music and how cool it feels to literally step inside the world of the videos we all know and love. Plus, fans will be relieved to know that The Zone is backed by Spears and that, according to Delson, she plans on visiting the pop-up in person. Because even she can't resist a piece of it.

In the Zone

2003 studio album by britney spears / from wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, dear wikiwand ai, let's keep it short by simply answering these key questions:.

Can you list the top facts and stats about In the Zone?

Summarize this article for a 10 year old

In the Zone is the fourth studio album by American singer Britney Spears . It was released on November 15, 2003, by Jive Records . Spears began writing songs during her Dream Within a Dream Tour , not knowing the direction of the record. She stated she was an autobiographical songwriter, although not to the point where she felt self-exploited. During the process, she ended her highly-publicized relationship with singer Justin Timberlake . With the tour's conclusion in July 2002, Spears planned to take a six-month break from her career; however, recording for the album commenced in November.

 • " Me Against the Music " Released: October 14, 2003
 • " Toxic " Released: January 12, 2004
 • " Everytime " Released: May 10, 2004
 • " Outrageous " Released: July 13, 2004

For In the Zone , Spears experimented with different producers, trying to find those with whom she had chemistry. She collaborated with artists such as Madonna and the Ying Yang Twins , while contributions came from a wide range of producers, including Bloodshy & Avant , R. Kelly , Trixster , Moby , Guy Sigsworth and the Matrix . Their final result was an eclectic record incorporating pop and urban music styles with instrumentation from techno and Middle Eastern genres. Its lyrical themes range from romance and partying to more explicit ones such as sex and masturbation. Spears explained that the album's sexual nature was subconscious and emerged while she was in the process of developing the album.

In the Zone received positive reviews upon its release, with music critics widely praising its innovative production, aesthetics, lyricism and blend of eclectic genres, though some criticized Spears' vocals on certain tracks for being distant and processed. A global commercial success, it debuted atop the US Billboard 200 with first-week sales of 609,000 copies, making Spears the first female artist to have four consecutive number-one albums. Retrospectively, the album is widely considered a major turning point in Spears' artistic journey and a culmination in her transition from a teen pop star to a more adult artist. Various critics have considered it the album that pushed Spears past her contemporaries and establishing her as the definitive female artist of the 2000s.

In the Zone was promoted with four singles. " Me Against the Music ", featuring Madonna, reached the top ten in nearly every country except the United States, where it only peaked at number 35 on the Billboard Hot 100 . " Toxic " peaked atop the charts in eight countries and at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Spears' first US top-ten hit since " Oops!... I Did It Again " (2000), and won Spears her first Grammy Award . " Everytime " peaked at number 15 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and within the top ten nearly everywhere else. " Outrageous " was plagued by a lack of promotion due to Spears injuring her knee while filming its accompanying music video, and only peaked at number 79 on the US Billboard Hot 100. To further promote the album, Spears embarked on the Onyx Hotel Tour (2004).

20 Years ‘In the Zone’ With Britney Spears

Baby hit us all more than one time on this classic.

And she largely succeeded: In the Zone debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, went triple platinum, and helped Spears win her first-ever Grammy. Although it couldn’t match her commercial zenith during the heyday of teen pop just a few years prior, it proved that everyone’s favorite gum-chomping goddess was still an important draw for fans of all ages, with an increasingly mature sound to match her moves.

Most importantly, of course, is the music, and there are some essential jams in the Book of Britney, so let’s all give thanks to the Holy Spearit and relisten!

“Me Against the Music” featuring Madonna

The lead single off the album, this frenetic duet was positioned to be Britney’s big statement: Look, Madonna is officially anointing her the heir to the throne! Although it became a worldwide hit and topped the charts in multiple countries, the song failed to fully catch fire in the U.S. the way you might expect, especially after Madonna and Britney had scandalized the globe a couple months earlier with their now-iconic VMA kiss . Surprisingly, the song stalled on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 at No. 35 and had more of an impact through some memorable parodies, both respectful and not so much . (Intriguingly, the first song its main writers pitched to Spears was a little ditty called “Pop Culture Whore” that the singer shot down. Gotta wonder what that would’ve sounded like!)

“(I Got That) Boom Boom” featuring Ying Yang Twins

Dedicated ostensibly to “all those Southern boys out there,” this countrified urban-banjo bop makes sense on paper, marrying Spears’ Louisiana heritage with dancey R&B pop and, of course, the singer’s unparalleled affinity for crooning sexy baby-did-a-bad-bad-thing lyrics like “boom boom.” Sadly, the Ying Yang Twins had already released their masterpiece the previous month, and so rather than achieving salty perfection for a second time, their bayou gumbo turned out a little flavorless. Still, it’s an interesting cut that seems as if it could turn into a perfect mash-up with “Alright” by Janet Jackson , one of Spears’ heroes. Let’s hope someone makes that happen.

A Cathy Dennis co-write, this reggae-laced jam finds the normally uptempo Spears riding the beat with an appealing laid-back vibe. (Both her vocal and the song itself seem to prefigure this classic that would come out three years later.) Alluring in its coy way, the lyrics find Spears cooing slow-burning lines like “I don’t really wanna be a tease/But would you undo my zipper, please?” While the subject matter may not have been that unfamiliar to fans at the time, the song’s production feels a lot more grown-up. This is a respectable album cut; no shame in that.

“Breathe on Me”

Now, the album starts to get really interesting with arguably the sexiest song in the entire Spears oeuvre, where her restrained approach proves electrifying. Singing about an erotic connection so powerful that touch isn’t even required to get her off, Spears has never sounded so adult, confident, or exciting. With a languid production and vocal that builds and falls and builds and falls, this is a surprisingly classy ode to one of the most universal of urges. (Extra points for the shout-out to monogamy that feels like a tribute to a fellow song scholar of sex .) It’s a shame this was never a single.

“Early Mornin’”

Things take a bit of an electro left turn with this odd song produced and co-written by Moby, a woozy tribute to the post-all-night-sexy-partying feeling. (Or as the poetess herself robo-moans, “I was shaking my ass in the stress ’til mornin.’” Who hasn’t been there?) The burbling little touches that send the hungover beat and Britney spinning back into the next wild adventure get more irresistible with each listen, and just when you’re ready to dismiss this as a trifle, you find yourself hitting repeat one more time. A well-crafted slice of sleaze that goes down sweet, this is pop for grown-ups in the best way possible.

Maybe the best Britney song — perhaps even of that entire era and to some, even across history — “Toxic” achieves the kind of iconic status that makes it hard to imagine there was ever a time before those Casio keyboard flute settings were menacing us all. Winning Spears her first Grammy, topping charts around the world, and reaching No. 9 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, this the kind of career-defining song any artist would kill for, and it’s hard to imagine any other artist doing it justice — or looking more iconic as a flight attendant. That includes Kylie Minogue, who turned it down for some reason, despite it being written by Cathy Dennis. Dennis had contributed to Minogue’s Body Language album, which came out a little more than a week after In the Zone . (Ironically, Minogue’s most recent single when “Toxic” debuted was almost its dark mirror image, the sleek “ Slow .” ) Ultimately, Britney Spears was the only choice to record this, and pop just does not get any better.

“Outrageous”

While filming the basketball-themed video for this song, Spears injured her knee during a dance number and had to be rushed into surgery. Her recovery ended up canceling the remainder of the shoot as well as the rest of the run of the Onyx Tour; the song itself only made it to No. 79 on the Billboard Hot 100. A slinky jam built around a throbbing refrain, “Outrageous” was actually Jive Records’ top choice for lead single, which boggles the mind. I mean, it’s a fine thumper, but far superior is the track that replaced it as the theme song for Halle Berry’s Catwoman. (Although some Spears purists reworked the scene as it would have been.)

“Touch of My Hand”

With a Middle Eastern-tinged production that stings softly but hits hard, Spears warbles about the pleasures of self-love, dipping her vocals in and out of the autotune robo effect that had worked such magic for Cher five years prior. Although Spears chooses to glide toward ecstasy where Cyndi Lauper opted to aggressively she-bop , she sounds fully adult, completely in control, and very sensual. It’s a great look for Spears, who was frequently criticized for performing sexuality for the benefit of audiences rather than authentically owning her own experience — she sounds completely empowered and present on this supple jam.

“The Hook Up”

This reggae-lite number suits Spears to a tee, pulsing and twirling and writhing around her as her vocals go from girlish to growling. As winning as this charmer is, however, this is definitely a track that would have really slapped if it had been delivered by a more authentic island icon who would debut two years later. Still, this song adds another element to help round out the overall sound of the set and goes down very smooth no matter how many times you choose to (pon de) replay it.

Something of a power ballad — although it stays in graceful yearning mode rather than busting out into full-on emoting — this song lets Spears belt some big notes. Something of a cousin to the Shania Twain co-penned “ Don’t Let Me Be the Last to Know ,” this is the musical tale of a lover who keeps pulling away so much that they barely ever fully existed in the relationship. For those who feel that Spears’ throaty singing is too strained or that she’s too much of a studio creation, it’s interesting to check out her live vocals on this challenging number during the Onyx Hotel tour. There’s something moving about the combination of song and singer, flaws and all, and it hits home how Spears seems to really connect with the sadder music and messages in her work.

“Brave New Girl”

This uptempo electro anthem of independence has an unusual distinction. It inspired the title of the 2004 movie version of the 2001 novel A Mother’s Gift , co-written by Spears and her mother, Lynne. In so many ways a theme song for Spears herself, she memorably celebrated being released from her conservatorship in 2021 with a dance video to this tune . (Oh, the doctoral dissertations that have yet to be written about the multivalent meanings behind this video!) While the song itself doesn’t really stand out all that much, it will always be precious to Spears fans for its importance to the singer, both metaphorically and literally.

“Everytime”

A delicate, devastatingly powerful music-box response to Justin Timberlake’s syncopated first solo single , this is my vote for the greatest song in the entire Spears catalog. Not only did she single-handedly compose the music, but she also co-wrote the lyrics with her backing singer Annet Artani. Both the vocal and the production are so achingly raw, sad, and vulnerable that it totally tracks that Spears’ original treatment for the controversial music video was for her thinly veiled alter ego to commit suicide. With apologies to the later Britney Jean promo , this is truly the most personal song Spears or any of her peers has ever recorded. This song showcases just how far Spears had come as a performer, pop culture figure, and true musician since the (likable) trifles of her early days . Maybe one day we’ll get her sadcore album.

In The Zone

By Jon Pareles

Jon Pareles

Say goodbye to Britney the virginal tease, and say hello, bay-bee, to Britney the freakazoid. None of that “not yet a woman” stuff this time around. There’s no question that Spears wants In the Zone to be erogenous, so she lays on the heavy breathing and offers herself for hookups on and off the dance floor. Madonna shows up in the album’s first song, “Me Against the Music,” as if endorsing Spears’ foray into come-hither posing and club-land beats. Nearly every song on In the Zone is a brittle, programmed rhythm track. This time, Spears promises to follow through on her come-ons: “I’ll let you touch me if you want,” she husks in the clever pop-dancehall “Showdown.”

Kendrick did everything he needed to on ‘euphoria’, daniel radcliffe responds to j.k. rowling's anti-trans rhetoric: 'it makes me really sad', ted cruz wants airlines to keep your cash when they cancel your flight.

High-risk behavior is fine with Spears. In “Brave New Girl,” she borrows Madonna’s “Material Girl” to praise a girl who goes out to get picked up. Spears succumbs to sexy guys in “The Hook Up,” “Breathe on Me,” “(I Got That) Boom Boom” and “Early Mornin’,” which has throbbing Moby production. And if there’s no lover available, there’s always “Touch of My Hand,” an ode to masturbation.

But the harder Spears tries to be Madonna or Janet Jackson, the less convincing she is. Her voice is so processed, its physicality almost disappears. R. Kelly can’t resist mocking her in his “Outrageous,” letting her boast about “my sex drive” and “my shopping sprees” with equal emphasis. In the Zone offers strip-club, 1-900 sex, accommodating and hollow. Beyond the glittering beats, Spears sounds about as intimate as a blowup doll.

Britney Spears

On 2001’s Britney , Britney Spears sang about the struggles of growing up — she wasn’t a girl, not yet a woman . But by 2003’s In the Zone , she had clearly arrived as the latter.

Spears’ hands-on artistry was rewarded by the public: In the Zone debuted atop the Billboard 200, went double-platinum and introduced some of the most iconic singles of her career. To celebrate the album and the turning point it provided for Spears’ career, Billboard ranked every song on the album’s standard edition.

'Sexy and Coy Without Trying Too Hard': How Britney Spears' 'Baby One More Time' Vocals Influenced…

12. “Shadow”

The first of the two slow tunes on the album, “Shadow” is Spears’s version of an ‘80s power ballad. But even her tender, emotive vocals aren’t enough to get out of the, well, shadow of “Everytime.”

11. “Brave New Girl”

“Brave New Girl” might as well have been a mission statement for the In the Zone era: Here, Spears sings about letting go of all the constraints that have held her back and vows do things on her own terms. Still, the overuse of Auto-Tune and vocal effects makes “Brave New Girl” more cheesy than captivating.

Let’s face it: “Outrageous” is a cursed track. From the controversial team-up with R. Kelly to the music video shoot where Spears injured her knee (which led to a cancelation of The Onyx Hotel Tour), the song is essentially the moment the singer’s career changed. But there is a silver lining: “B-girl ain’t lost the beat/ Jumped over drama and I landed on my feet” is as good a mantra for Spears’ career as any.

9. “Showdown”

Swedish production duo Bloodshy & Avant are the masters behind this unsubtle bedroom anthem, which finds Spears instructing her lover to undo her zipper and likening their adults-only fun to an arena sporting event. But when it comes to overall sexiness, “Showdown” doesn’t, erm, rise , to the occasion of the album’s more seductive tracks.

8. “The Hook Up”

Spears has experimented with reggae and dancehall in the past (see: … Baby One More Time ’s reggae-funk “Soda Pop”), but on “The Hook Up,” she sounds like she stumbled into the sweaty basement where Sean Paul shot his “Get Busy” video. The dance-instruction lyrics and hard-hitting bass make for a flirty vibe, though the occasional, slight patois in her vocal delivery didn’t age well.

7. “(I Got That) Boom Boom” feat. Ying Yang Twins

“SHAWTYYY! WE FINNA GO TO THE CLUB AND GET CRUNK WITH BRITNEY…HAANNN!” still remains one of the best song introductions of the new millennium. “Boom Boom” saw Spears embrace her really cool and urban side as she drew from her Southern roots. Then throw in a naughty verse from Atlanta’s Ying Yang Twins, and you have a weirdly perfect ass-shaking theme song for the clubs — and one of the most unpredictable pop-rap collaborations of the era.

Compared to other lead singles from her previous albums, “Me Against The Music” isn’t as iconic. But it offers a solid taste of Spears’ newfound experimental side — from the funky guitar riffs to her rapid-fire singing, it’s Weirdney through and through. And, of course, the inclusion of Madonna served as the ultimate “passing the pop torch” moment that many fans were waiting for.

Britney Spears' 'Blackout' Turns 10: How Her Worst Year Gave Us Her Best Album

5. “Toxic”

4. “Early Mornin’”

Who knew Moby could be so risqué? He co-wrote and co-produced this after-hours jam, in which Spears details some presumed one-night stands with a dude with “dark hair” and another guy named Joe. And it’s a stand-out on In the Zone thanks to Spears’ commitment to capturing the vibe — the singer literally yawns, whispers and giggles throughout the track as she recounts her nights out, making it feel like an authentic snapshot of her life at the time.

3. “Everytime”

While Timberlake went the scorched-earth route on 2002’s post-breakup single “Cry Me A River,” Spears’ purported response, “Everytime,” opted for something more nuanced and tender — and totally heartbreaking. Her vocals are so soft and fragile, it sounds as if she just finished wiping away tears before getting in the recording booth. And the song’s lyrical message becomes even more haunting when you watch the David LaChapelle-directed video for the track, which appears to depict Spears’ death and reincarnation following a paparazzi-induced head injury.

2. “Touch of My Hand”

“Touch of My Hand” was the first song Spears recorded for In The Zone , and it clearly shaped the album’s unbridled sensuality. Here, she takes part in a tradition of unapologetic, taboo-busting self-love anthems — “I love myself, it’s not a sin/ I can’t control what’s happening,” she purrs just before the chorus — and it deserves to be as much of a classic in that category as the Divinyls’ “I Touch Myself.” It’s also a song Spears clearly loves: Despite being a deep cut album track, she’s regularly included it many of her tour and residency setlists.

1. “Breathe on Me”

Taking a few notes from Madonna’s passion-filled Bedtime Stories , Spears delivers one of the most provocative songs in her catalog with the trip-hop inspired “Breathe on Me.” Set to a woozy, tingling beat, the track finds Spears toying with the listener via come-hither whispers and references to climaxes — a less-explicit approach than “Showdown,” sure, but one that’s somehow even more intense. (She drove the point home during the Onyx Hotel Tour, during which she writhed around a bed with a male dancer to this track.) It takes a superstar of Spears’ caliber to make an ad for monogamy sound this freaky.

Here, we take a look back at some of the key moments of Britney Spears's life in photos.

Britney Spears has had an unforgettable career, and clearly, the "Toxic" singer still has a passionate fanbase, as evidenced by the #FreeBritney movement—a fan-led effort to end her conservatorship, which was ultimately terminated in November 2021. Now, although she’s taken a step back from music, the superstar is still winning our hearts, whether she’s dropping a bombshell memoir or simply dancing on Instagram. Here, we take a look back at some of the key moments of Britney Spears's life in photos.
