Leaders of Travel: Skift C-Suite Series

What are the top trends impacting hotels, airlines, and online bookings? We speak to the executives shaping the future of travel.

Have you been to Amsterdam? If so, there’s a good chance you’ve flown on a Koninklijke Luchtvaart Maatschappij plane without knowing it. The company, better known by its catchier acronym KLM, is the flag carrier of the Netherlands and the world’s oldest airline operating under its original name.

From its mega hub at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport, it serves more than 170 global destinations with a fleet of distinctive bright blue aircraft. It’s a cornerstone of the SkyTeam alliance, and counts Delta Air Lines and Virgin Atlantic among its key commercial partners.

But a proud history is no guarantee of future success. As recent challenges have graphically illustrated, KLM’s long-term relevance in an increasingly competitive industry cannot be taken for granted.

Thankfully, Marjan Rintel is no stranger to problem-solving. She spent 15 years in various operational and marketing positions across KLM before leaving to be President and CEO of Dutch Railways. She returned to the airline in 2022, taking on the CEO role from Pieter Elbers, who is now CEO of Indian low-cost carrier IndiGo .

In the latest of our Leaders of Travel: Skift C-Suite Series , we sit down with Rintel as she leads KLM into a busy summer season.

A Very Important Summer

Skift: We’re speaking here at the start of June, with hopefully some good visibility for the coming season. How is this summer shaping up for KLM?

Marjan Rintel: Bookings are still looking fine and stable. Around the world, there’s still not all the aircraft capacity in place, which is helping. For us, it’s most important that we are running well operationally. We have improved a lot after the first quarter, and the May holiday [peak] was very successful, so we’re looking forward to this summer.

Your airline is a critical component of the Air France-KLM Group . Are passengers shifting their flights through Amsterdam this summer to avoid the Paris Olympics?

What we’re currently seeing is that our outlook is not going up, but it’s not going down. But we do see a difference in Paris. They [passengers] are avoiding Paris because of the Olympics, but we still need to see if there’s any effect of shifting from Paris to Amsterdam. As we speak today, it’s still stable.

A Fleet in Flux

We’ve seen operational problems with your new fleet of regional Embraer E2 jets. What’s the latest on their engine issues ?

If it’s flying, the E2 is a brilliant plane. Customers love it, pilots love it. It’s really efficient, the product is great. The issue is with the engines, not the plane. There are [KLM] planes grounded, but it’s also not only KLM, it is many other airlines as well, including the Airbus A220s from Air France. But it will harm us for a period of time, that’s for sure.

We’re meeting with Pratt and Whitney, who make the engines, to see what’s coming up. We need to redo the engines, and that means Pratt and Whitney need to have enough capacity and spare products. We will receive their plans in a few weeks’ time, but I expect [the maintenance solutions] will take a few years.

Long-Haul Capacity

Are you seeing any softness in bookings in the transatlantic market?

We saw in the months after the pandemic that the U.S. market really caught up, but there’s also now been a lot of capacity put in. Therefore the demand is a little less than what we were seeing before. At the same time, Asia is catching up and we’re particularly seeing more traffic towards Japan.

Some destinations in China are better than others, but there are no visa constraints anymore going to China, which is very helpful. Elsewhere, our Entebbe (Uganda) and Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) routes are proving very popular as well. As is the Caribbean; Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao are booming.

How is the long-haul outlook more broadly?

We need to add more capacity to our long-haul network. We’re still suffering from pilot constraints, therefore we’re still not at 100%. Firstly, we need to restore our pilot capacity, and therefore our long-haul capacity, and then we can start to make some choices.

A Level Playing Field?

You mention strengthening demand to Asia. How frustrating is it that your airline needs to avoid Russian airspace when flying, for example, from Amsterdam to China, when many other global carriers don’t?

It’s not a level playing field. It takes another two hours for us, four cockpit crew, and of course, more fuel, which is not the cheapest today. It’s really frustrating and I think it’s harmful for relationships. We are in an international world and an international competition, so it’s very hard to have restrictions from Europe or Russia that are not valid for others.

There’s been talk of regulatory intervention to block airlines flying into Europe or the U.S. from overflying Russian airspace en route. In principle, is this something you would support?

Yes, of course.

Environmental Concerns

KLM has been in a high-profile dispute regarding noise and flight caps at your home airport at Amsterdam Schiphol . What’s your message to the authorities?

I think it goes broader than only Schiphol, it’s the government too. The objective is to remove noise, so we need to look at efficient ways for us to be able to reduce that while keeping the positioning of KLM and the airline industry in the Netherlands as it is today.

It’s needed for welfare, for companies, and for the future of flying. We’ve already initiated our own plan , which is ‘more clean, more quiet, and more efficient’ – it sounds much nicer in Dutch! I think this shows that you don’t need a reduction in movements [the number of planes taking off and landing] if you want to achieve your objective.

Prior to rejoining KLM, you headed up the Dutch Railways. In Europe, there’s a lot of industry chatter about better integration of rail and air services. What’s your perspective on this?

Before you think about true integration, you need to consider the infrastructure for the trains. If you want to take a train up to 500 or 600 kilometers [310-370 miles], you need faster trains. They don’t have to be high-speed, but at least speedy enough to make it more attractive for passengers to take the train instead of the plane.

The integration then can come through ticketing and systems, baggage handling, and seamless service for customers. But first of all, you need the infrastructure, and if that’s not there, it won’t happen at all.

The best ways to travel to Europe using points and miles

E urope is a popular option for award travelers thanks to its rich history, diverse cultures, excellent beaches and gourmet cuisine. However, with new routes, mileage devaluations and airline partnerships, keeping track of the top ways to fly to Europe with miles can be challenging. Still, there are excellent travel options for your credit card points.

Regardless of your budget for your next trip, this guide will help ensure that you can obtain great value from your point redemptions for your European vacation with proper planning.

First class

For the ultimate way to travel to Europe in style and comfort, here are our tips for booking first-class seats with points and miles.

Lufthansa's first-class product is one of the best in the sky, offering a fantastic onboard experience, including caviar, canapes and fine wines. If you're traveling from Frankfurt Airport (FRA), you can access Lufthansas's special first-class terminal; it has private customs and immigration facilities, a top-tier lounge and a chauffeur who will take you from the terminal directly to the tarmac next to your plane.

Unfortunately, Lufthansa's first class is also known for being one of the hardest airline tickets to purchase with points. Lufthansa generally only opens up award availability for first-class tickets to partner airlines around 14 days (or less) before departure; in most cases, it will likely only become available a few days before departure. Because Lufthansa only operates this cabin on some aircraft (Boeing 747-8s, Airbus A380s and a handful of A340s), first-class redemptions can be scarce.

The airline operates a variety of these aircraft on routes between the U.S. and Germany:

  • Between FRA and the following airports: Chicago's O'Hare International Airport (ORD), Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), Miami International Airport (MIA), Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and Dulles International Airport (IAD) near Washington, D.C.
  • Between Munich Airport (MUC) and the following airports: Boston Logan International Airport (BOS), New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), LAX, MIA and EWR

Lufthansa's new Allegris first-class seat should commence flying on select Airbus A350 aircraft later this year.

Redemptions are a great value if you can find them last minute. You can use the following partner miles to book it:

  • Avianca LifeMiles : You'll need 87,000 miles and low taxes and fees of only $30.60 for a flight from San Francisco to Frankfurt. Avianca LifeMiles is a transfer partner of American Express Membership Rewards , Bilt Rewards , Capital One miles , Citi ThankYou Rewards and Marriott Bonvoy .
  • United Airlines MileagePlus : Expect to redeem 140,000 miles and spend about $140 in taxes and fees for a flight from Newark to Munich. United MileagePlus is a transfer partner of Chase Ultimate Rewards , Bilt Rewards and Marriott Bonvoy.
  • Air Canada Aeroplan : Plan on needing 90,000 miles from the West Coast or 100,000 miles from the Midwest and East Coast, plus around $50 in taxes and fees, for a flight to Germany; taxes and fees for a flight from Europe to the U.S. will cost less than $200. Aeroplan is a transfer partner of American Express Membership Rewards, Bilt Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards, Capital One miles and Marriott Bonvoy.

British Airways

While British Airways' first-class product doesn't have as many bells and whistles as Lufthansa's, booking with points and miles is much easier.

British Airways operates first class on most of its transatlantic fleet, including the Airbus A380, the Boeing 787-10 and most Boeing 777s. If you are flying from London's Heathrow Airport (LHR) in first class, the Concorde Room is one of the best airport lounges in Europe.

First class can be easy to find on flights from JFK and EWR, where the airline operates more than a dozen combined services each day. However, it can be harder to find on routes with only one or two daily services, like ones from MIA and Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) in Las Vegas.

First-class flights on British Airways to London start from 68,000 British Airways Executive Club Avios on off-peak dates for shorter flights from the East Coast, 80,000 Avios on peak dates for shorter flights from the East Coast, 85,000 Avios on off-peak for longer flights (such as those from California) and 100,000 Avios on peak dates for longer flights, including those from the West Coast.

Unfortunately, British Airways imposes large fuel surcharges that total around $800 each way in first class, as well as airport fees and government taxes. As first-class flights are excluded from British Airways' Reward Flight Saver option , paying more Avios cannot reduce these surcharges.

American Airlines AAdvantage award rates are cheaper for first-class British Airways tickets to the West Coast, as American uses a region-based award chart rather than a distance-based award chart. Regardless of the origin in the U.S. or date of travel, American Airlines currently charges 85,000 AAdvantage miles plus taxes and fees for these award flights, so for longer flights to Europe, consider AAdvantage instead. You can also add a short-haul connecting flight beyond London to mainland Europe for no extra cost when using American miles, whereas British Airways charges extra. Keep in mind, a short flight with British Airways will be in the carrier's Club Europe cabin , which is nothing like first class.

Just remember that flights departing from the United Kingdom will face even higher costs thanks to the country's Air Passenger Duty. That's why you should avoid making London the final stop on your European adventure.

Business class

Want a lie-flat bed for an overnight flight that arrives in Europe so you can feel rested and refreshed? Here are our business-class redemption recommendations.

One redemption for Europe trips that has remained strong over the years is Iberia. Iberia operates flights from ORD, IAD, BOS, LAX, MIA, JFK, SFO and Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) to its main hub at Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD).

Iberia's Airbus A330-200, A330-300 and A350-900 aircraft operate transatlantic flights, each offering a 1-2-1 business-class configuration. While the Airbus A350 offers Iberia's newest and best business-class product (including sliding doors and an 18.5-inch, 4k inflight entertainment screen), all three aircraft provide excellent points value on transatlantic flights.

Related: A review of Iberia's new business-class suite on the A350-900 from Madrid to Mexico City

Iberia prices its flights based on distance and whether your travel falls into peak or off-peak dates. Four of its departure gateways offer spectacular value. If you depart from JFK, BOS, IAD or ORD, here's what you'll pay for one-way business-class flights:

  • Off-peak dates: 34,000 Avios and about $120 in fees
  • Peak dates: 50,000 Avios and about $120 in fees

Tickets on Iberia flights longer than 4,000 miles (any flights departing from Miami or cities west of Chicago) are pricier. However, an off-peak fare to Madrid from these destinations will cost 42,500 Avios, which is still an excellent deal.

Air France-KLM

Another one of the industry's great sweet spots to Europe is booking flights on Air France or KLM through their Flying Blue program . While flights are priced dynamically, they start from just 50,000 miles from anywhere in North America to anywhere in Europe, a terrific deal with both carriers operating great products.

Related: Flying Blue standardizes prices of saver-level redemptions to Europe

Availability during the winter months is usually excellent. During summer, seats at these prices come and go often in waves. Availability from New York is usually fairly easy to find if you are flexible, as there are numerous daily flights, while seats from the West Coast can be harder to find.

Also, remember to keep an eye out for Flying Blue's monthly Promo Rewards , where select routes are discounted by 25%, making the award prices even cheaper.

Premium economy

Premium economy provides a sensible midway point with more space and comfort than economy without breaking the bank.

Just like with its attractive business-class redemption pricing, Iberia's business-class cabin rates for flights to Spain are also very reasonable.

If you don't have enough miles to stretch for a flat bed in business class for overnight flights to Europe, consider premium economy instead. It offers a wider seat, a smaller, more intimate cabin, more legroom and recline, and elevated food, beverages and bedding than the economy-class cabin.

Passengers also receive an amenity kit and noise-canceling headphones.

From Dallas, Miami and the West Coast, expect to pay 31,750 Avios for off-peak travel or 43,750 Avios for peak season flights. Tickets from Chicago and the East Coast are slightly cheaper. During off-peak times, you can purchase a premium economy ticket for just 25,500 Avios from New York, Boston and D.C. to Madrid; on peak dates, expect to redeem 35,000 Avios.

Related: 7 things that surprised me on my first premium economy flight

Both Air France and KLM offer premium economy class on most transatlantic routes. While Air France's product has some room for improvement, TPG rates KLM's premium economy as one of the world's best. It provides an elevated experience above economy class, including lobster for dinner on select routes, which is almost unheard of in premium economy.

While Flying Blue prices its awards dynamically, the program has standardized saver-level pricing for all one-way flights between the U.S. and Europe, regardless of origin or destination. This means you can connect at no extra cost from just 35,000 miles in premium economy on Air France or KLM.

Related: Is KLM premium economy worth it on the 787 Dreamliner?

Do you just want the cheapest price to fly to Europe? Here are our economy recommendations for redeeming points and miles for flights to Europe.

Delta Air Lines and Virgin Atlantic

You can book Virgin Atlantic- or Delta-operated economy-class flights to Europe with Virgin Atlantic Flying Club points starting at just 10,000 points each way from the East Coast on off-peak dates. Peak dates require just 15,000 points.

Flights from other parts of the U.S. start at just 12,500 points on off-peak dates and 20,000 points on peak dates. Peak date flights from California cost 25,000 Virgin points each way, which is not as great of a redemption.

Admittedly, Virgin Atlantic Flying Club charges more fees, taxes and surcharges than Delta SkyMiles . However, Delta's loyalty program may charge at least 40,000 miles each way from the U.S. to the U.K. in economy, so the miles you're saving can be worth a few hundred dollars.

Also look out for Virgin's redemption discount offers, where, from time to time, the points required are discounted by as much as 50%. This makes it possible to score a flight to London for just 5,000 points plus fees and taxes.

Related: A review of Delta Air Lines economy on the Boeing 767 from London to New York

If you want to fly to Ireland in economy class, redeeming Avios through the Aer Lingus Aer Club program or British Airways Executive Club is a terrific deal.

Aer Lingus routes from the northeast U.S. to Ireland require just 13,000 Avios each way on off-peak dates. This includes flights from JFK, BOS, ORD, IAD and Philadelphia International Airport (PHL). Fees, taxes and surcharges are reasonable, too, and should be no more than $100. However, peak travel dates require 20,000 Avios each way.

Longer flights from Florida, Washington (specifically, Seattle) and California to Ireland cost a slightly higher 16,250 Avios each way on off-peak dates or 25,000 Avios on peak dates. This could still be a good deal if nonstop cash fares are otherwise expensive.

How to earn points and miles to book flights to Europe

The following cards all currently offer strong welcome bonuses with points and miles that you can transfer to some or all of the above programs to book flights to Europe:

  • The Business Platinum Card® from American Express
  • The Platinum Card® from American Express
  • American Express® Gold Card
  • Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card
  • Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card
  • Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card
  • Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card

Bottom line

Redeeming points for travel to Europe can be confusing. With so many airlines flying on seemingly endless route combinations across the Atlantic, planning a European getaway with miles can quickly overwhelm. If you plan to visit Europe in the summer, booking as early as possible is best to maximize your chance of finding the right flight at the right price.

However, this guide will help you save time (and points or miles) when finding the best flight options for your hop across the pond. Be sure to regularly check out TPG, as we regularly share last-minute award deals from the U.S. to Europe, Asia and beyond.

Air France KLM Flying Blue Elite Status: Guide to Qualifying and Privileges

Air France KLM Flying Blue members can gain Experience Points (XP) by flying with Air France, KLM, and partner airlines each year.

By earning XP, you’ll move up in elite status tiers, and enjoy an incremental range of extra benefits when flying with Air France, KLM, and SkyTeam-member airlines.

In This Post

How to qualify for air france klm flying blue elite status, other ways to earn flying blue xp and uxp, air france klm flying blue elite status benefits, summary of flying blue elite benefits.

The only way to qualify for Air France KLM Flying Blue Elite status is by earning Experience Points (XP).

There are a couple of ways to earn XP; however, the most common way is by flying on eligible flights.

XP are earned when flying with Air France, KLM, and their airline partners; however, beginning April 1, 2024, XP will be earned exclusively on flights with Air France, KLM, and SkyTeam airline partners.

Currently, Flying Blue members can earn XP on non-SkyTeam partner airlines including Copa Airlines, Qantas, Japan Airlines, Etihad Airways, and WestJet, but this will no longer be the case after April 1, 2024.

XP can only be earned on revenue bookings, and aren’t earned on award flights.

The number of XP earned on each flight is based on the cabin class and the flight distance, as laid out in the following chart:

For example, if you fly from Montreal to Paris on a revenue business class ticket, you’ll earn 30 XP, since the distance between the two cities falls under the “Long 2” category.

For connecting flights, you’ll receive XP cumulatively for each leg you fly.

For example, if you have a revenue flight from Toronto to Paris with Air France in business class, and then onwards from Paris to Nice in economy, you’ll earn 32 XP.

The Toronto to Paris leg of the trip is an international flight between 3,500–5,000 miles, earning 30 XP for a business class fare, while the Paris to Nice leg is a domestic flight, earning 2 XP. These two legs together earn a total of 32 XP.

Flying Blue has four elite status tiers. After Flying Blue Explorer, the base membership level, there’s Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Ultimate.

Notably, earning XP will only get you as far as the Platinum level. To reach the Flying Blue Ultimate level, you have to earn what are known as Ultimate Experience Points (UXP).

Unlike XP, UXP can only be earned by flying with Air France or KLM, and not with partner airlines; however, the earning structure for UXP is the same as earning XP.

To qualify for each Flying Blue elite status tier, you’ll need to earn the following number of XP or UXP:

  • Silver: 100 XP
  • Gold: 180 XP
  • Platinum: 300 XP
  • Ultimate: 900 UXP

It’s important to note that your XP balance resets as you reach each status tier.

For example, once you’ve reached 100 XP and earned Silver status, these accumulated XP will be withdrawn from your account, and you’ll begin again at 0 XP.

Then, to reach Gold status, you’ll need to earn an additional 180 XP, and not just an additional 80 XP, as it might appear at first glance.

Accounting for these withdrawals, you’ll actually need to earn a total of 100 XP for Silver, 280 XP for Gold, and 580 XP for Platinum. Qualifying for Ultimate status is still 900 UXP, as UXP aren’t withdrawn at any of the lower levels.

Another important aspect of the Flying Blue Elite status program is ‌timing.

Whereas most loyalty programs give members one calendar year to meet status level requirements, Flying Blue’s elite status operates a bit differently.

Instead of a calendar year, members have 12 consecutive months to earn enough XP to increase their status level. The 12 months begin as soon as you earn your first XP after joining the Flying Blue program, rather than on January 1.

If you earn less than 100 XP in that first 12 months, thus failing to reach Silver status, your XP will start back at 0, and you’ll have another 12 months to try again.

As soon as you’ve earned 100 XP and reached Silver status, that 100 XP will be subtracted from your account total, and you’ll start back at 0 XP. However, you’ll be able to enjoy the benefits that come with your Silver status for the next 12 months.

Additionally, the 12-month counter also resets, giving you another 12 months to earn another 100 XP to maintain Silver status, or to earn another 180 XP to level up to Gold status.

If after these 12 months, you don’t earn enough XP for the next status level, you’ll be downgraded to one status tier lower.

This “soft-landing” feature is also very different from most other loyalty programs, as typically if you don’t reach the status requirement after a year, you’ll be downgraded all the way to the program’s base member level of no status.

With Flying Blue, you’ll only move down one level each year that you don’t earn enough XP to maintain or move up.

With this system, a member who earns Ultimate status, but who doesn’t earn any more XP or UXP, will still be able to enjoy Flying Blue elite status for four years.

This member will spend the first 12 months at the Ultimate level, then 12 months at the Platinum level, 12 months at the Gold level, and 12 months at the Silver status level before falling to the Flying Blue Explorer level.

The Flying Blue elite status program also allows members to carry over XP if they hold Silver Elite status or higher, and are unable to earn enough XP to access the next level up.

For example, if you earn 100 XP as a Flying Blue Explorer member, you’ll immediately be upgraded to the Silver Elite level.

If you then earn only 150 XP within the following 12 months (30 XP shy of Gold status), 100 XP will be deducted to maintain your Silver status for another year, and the remaining 50 XP will stay in your account to help you jumpstart your journey towards earning Gold status.

However, if you fail to reach the 100 XP needed to maintain Silver status, then you won’t be able to carry over any XP, and you’ll be downgraded to Flying Blue Explorer, starting again at 0 XP.

Similarly, if you’ve reached the Gold level by earning the full 280 XP necessary, but in the next 12 months, you fail to earn an additional 180 XP to maintain your Gold status, you’ll be downgraded to Silver, and your XP will reset to 0.

XP are only carried over if you have extra XP above and beyond what’s required to maintain your current status level.

At the Ultimate level, if you earn more than the 900 UXP needed to keep your Ultimate status for another year, any UXP over the 900, and up to 1,800, will stay in your account to help you reach Ultimate status again in the new 12-month period.

Even though XP and UXP are most commonly earned through eligible paid flying activity, there are also other ways to top up your balances.

In Canada, the Air France KLM World Elite Mastercard, offered through Brim Financial, may come with XP as a welcome bonus , and comes with XP as an ongoing annual cardholder benefit.

Until March 10, 2024, you can earn 100 XP as a welcome bonus on the card, which will then immediately boost you to Silver Elite status.

Then, in subsequent years, you’ll earn 30 XP each year, which lowers the threshold for maintaining or earning status on an ongoing basis.

If you flying with Air France or KLM with any frequency, this is an excellent credit card to have to help fast-track your way to status every year.

Additionally, when purchasing an eligible flight, you’ll be given an option to help offset C0₂ emissions corresponding to your flight by paying extra towards sustainability efforts.

You’ll earn XP depending on how much you choose to pay, and the amount you can pay will change depending on your specific flight.

The example given on Flying Blue’s website is of an economy flight on KLM from Amsterdam to Edmonton, and for this flight, the four sustainability options are as follows:

  • Reforestation: pay €10 or 2,000 miles, gain 1 XP
  • Reforestation and Sustainable Aviation Fuel: pay €19, gain 2 XP
  • Reforestation and Sustainable Aviation Fuel: pay €33, gain 4 XP
  • Sustainable Aviation Fuel: pay €469, gain 47 XP

If you find yourself just shy of reaching the next Flying Blue status level, it may‌ make sense to donate miles or cash to support a charity or offset C0₂ emissions and earn XP.

Accor Live Limitless

Lastly, if you link an Accor Live Limitless account with your Flying Blue account, you’ll receive up to 10 XP.

You’ll receive 5 XP after your first eligible stay at an Accor Live Limitless hotel, and you’ll receive an additional 5 XP after your first eligible flight.

Once you’ve earned enough XP to reach an elite status level, you’ll be able to enjoy status benefits immediately.

General Benefits for Flying Blue Elite Members

There are a number of Air France KLM Flying Blue  benefits available to all elite members; however, they change depending on your status level.

Extra baggage allowance: All elite members get one extra checked bag on flights operated by Air France, KLM, Aircalin, Air Corsica, Air Mauritius, China Southern Airlines, GOL, Qantas, and SkyTeam partners, plus one golf bag containing only your golf equipment (max 23 kg) when flying with KLM, Air France, Air Corsica, Air Mauritius, or Aircalin.

Lounge access: Flying Blue Silver members have access to eligible airport lounges for a fee that changes depending on the lounge.

Flying Blue Gold and Platinum  members have complimentary access to eligible lounges for themselves plus one guest.

Flying Blue Ultimate members have free lounge access for themselves plus up to eight guests.

Upgrades: When flying with Air France, Flying Blue Platinum and Ultimate members may be upgraded to La Première cabin class, subject to availability.

SkyTeam status: Each Flying Blue elite status corresponds to a SkyTeam status level, which provides more benefits when flying with partnered SkyTeam airlines.

Flying Blue Silver matches to SkyTeam Elite, and Flying Blue Gold, Platinum, and Ultimate match to SkyTeam Elite Plus.

Priority services: All Flying Blue elite members will enjoy priority baggage drop-off and priority check-in. Gold members and higher will also have access to priority baggage handling.

Dedicated service line: All Flying Blue elite members have access to a designated service line.

Silver and Gold members have access to the Premium Service Line, while Platinum and Ultimate members have access to the more exclusive Platinum Service Line and Ultimate Assistant, respectively.

Air France and KLM Exclusive Benefits for Flying Blue Elite Members

The following are specific benefits that only apply to flights with Air France and KLM:

Seat selection: All Flying Blue elite members will be able to select standard seats at the time of booking on Air France and KLM flights.

Priority boarding: Silver members get access to boarding zone 3, and all other elite members have SkyPriority boarding.

Specific seat requests: Flying Blue elite members can request extra legroom, front section seats, and seats in a row of two.

Silver members can make requests 24 hours before departure, Gold members can make requests 72 hours before departure, and Platinum and Ultimate members can make requests at the time of booking.

Economy Comfort seats: On KLM flights, Gold members can request an upgrade to an Economy Comfort seat 72 hours before departure. Platinum and Ultimate members can make the request at the time of booking.

Guaranteed seat in economy: Gold status members and higher are guaranteed a seat in economy, even if the flight is fully booked.

This benefit is available on long-haul flights operated by Air France, KLM, China Southern Airlines, and SkyTeam partners if you purchased a full-fare ticket at least 24 hours before your flight’s departure.

Miles never expire: For non-elite members, Flying Blue miles expire after two years unless you take an eligible flight or make a purchase with an eligible co-branded credit card.

Elite members don’t have to worry about this, as their Flying Blue miles don’t expire.

Since the Flying Blue program is used by six airlines and has partnerships with even more, there are quite a few more benefits for members with elite status.

With Delta Air Lines, when booking an eligible fare class, Flying Blue Silver and Gold status members enjoy a 25% and 50% discount, respectively, on Delta Comfort+ seats. Flying Blue Platinum and Ultimate members can upgrade to Delta Comfort+ seats for free.

There are further benefits with Kenya Airways, Air Mauritius, and GOL, and these can all be found on Flying Blue’s website.

Here’s a summary of the key benefits available at each Flying Blue Elite status level.

Silver (100 XP)

Flying Blue Silver members will enjoy the following benefits:

  • Earn 6 Flying Blue miles per euro spent on Air France & KLM flights, as well as selected extra options
  • Priority check-in, baggage drop-off, and boarding
  • Free selection of standard seats
  • Free seat options 24 hours before departure
  • One free extra checked bag on eligible flights

Gold (180 XP)

Flying Blue Gold members will enjoy the following benefits:

  • Earn 7 Flying Blue miles per euro spent on Air France & KLM flights, as well as selected extra options
  • Free access to select lounges worldwide with a guest (conditions apply)
  • SkyPriority priority access throughout the airport
  • Free seat options 72 hours before departure

Platinum (300 XP)

Flying Blue Platinum members will enjoy the following benefits:

  • Earn 8 Flying Blue miles per euro spent on Air France & KLM flights, as well as selected extra options
  • Enjoy complimentary access to select lounges across the globe for you plus one guest
  • SkyPriority priority access at the airport
  • Choose a standard seat when you buy your ticket, free of charge
  • Benefit from preferred seat options, free of charge
  • Waived service fees for changes on award flights
  • Enjoy 24/7 access to the exclusive Platinum Service Line

Ultimate (900 UXP)

Flying Blue Ultimate members will enjoy the following benefits:

  • Earn 9 Flying Blue miles per euro spent on Air France & KLM, as well as selected extra options
  • Complimentary access to Air France and KLM lounges with up to eight travel companions
  • Enjoy SkyPriority services for you and your travel companions
  • Enjoy 24/7 support from Ultimate Assistant
  • Receive 4 complimentary cabin upgrade vouchers per year
  • One Flying Blue Platinum card for a travel companion
  • Hertz Platinum Card with additional benefits

Flying Blue Ultimate status is the highest Flying Blue status tier. It’s fairly hard to reach, but if you can earn 900 UXP, you’ll be greatly rewarded.

In particular, the four complimentary upgrade vouchers per membership year are especially intriguing.

Ultimate Elite members can apply one upgrade voucher to upgrade a flight from economy to business class on short and medium-haul flights, and can apply two vouchers to upgrade a long-haul flight from economy to business class.

A flight with multiple legs that connects a short- or medium-haul flight with a long-haul flight will all be considered part of one request.

A flight with two long-haul legs will need two requests to upgrade from economy to business (using four upgrade vouchers in total).

Lastly, Flying Blue Ultimate members will receive a Platinum Card for a travel companion. This allows ‌Flying Blue Ultimate members to nominate a travel companion to receive all Flying Blue Platinum benefits.

The nominated Flying Blue member will continue to enjoy Platinum benefits for as long as the original members hold Ultimate status.

Lifetime Elite Status

Flying Blue also offers members the opportunity to enjoy Platinum status for life.

To‌ earn lifetime Platinum status, you’ll need to be a Platinum or Ultimate status member for 10 consecutive years.

Air France KLM Flying Blue offers members the chance to enjoy extra benefits by earning elite status.

By earning Experience Points (XP) each year , members can progress through the elite tiers and enjoy an incremental range of elevated benefits.

Additionally, there are alternative ways to earn XP, such as through the Air France KLM World Elite Mastercard , donations, and hotel partnerships, and the program’s unique 12-month qualification period and ability to carry over XP provide flexibility for members to maintain or upgrade their status.

From extra baggage allowances to lounge access, priority services, and even cabin upgrades, elite status in the Flying Blue program is absolutely worth pursuing if you often travel with Air France, KLM, and their partner airlines.

The Best No-Fee Travel Credit Cards

a person reaching for a credit card in their wallet

Opinions, reviews, analyses & recommendations are the author’s alone, and have not been reviewed, endorsed, or approved by any of these entities. This page does not include all card companies or all available card offers.

One of the easiest ways to save money traveling is by using credit cards (responsibly) to collect points and miles . This essentially transforms your everyday spending into free flights, free hotel stays, and other awesome travel perks.

Not only does this stretch your travel budget but it levels up your travel experience, providing free upgrades, lounge access, and much, much more.

Whether you want to be on the road for longer, take more trips, or simply save money on your next vacation, points and miles can get you there.

However, most of the best travel credit cards have annual fees (sometimes huge ones).

While annual fees are usually worth it for frequent travelers (you can get much more value out of a card than its annual fee), if you’re new to all of this or don’t travel that much, you may want to get a no-fee card first.

And there are a lot of no-fee cards out there. Which one do you pick?

Here is my list of the best no-fee travel credit cards so you can start earning points toward free travel today:

Table of Contents

1. The Bilt Rewards Mastercard

2. capital one ventureone rewards credit card, 3. chase freedom unlimited®, cards with low fees.

Bilt credit card

You can transfer points 1:1 to travel partners, including American Airlines, Alaska Airlines, United, Emirates, Hawaiian, Virgin Atlantic, Air Canada, Air France/KLM, Hyatt, and IHG. The fact that you can transfer Bilt points to American Airlines and Alaska Airlines really sets this card apart as no other card’s points transfer to these airlines. Amassing Bilt points is the only way to get these points without having an American or Alaska card.

Bilt also integrates with point.me , a handy search and booking engine for award flights.

This card offers:

  • 1x points on rental payments
  • 2x points on travel
  • 3x points on dining
  • American Airlines and Alaska Airlines as transfer partners (it’s the only card that does)
  • Rent Day benefits: monthly giveaways and challenges as well as 6x points on dining, 4x points on travel, and 2x on spending on the 1st of the month
  • Access to the Bilt Milestone Rewards program (where you get more perks and earning power the more points you accumulate)
  • Trip Cancellation and Interruption Protection and Trip Delay Reimbursement
  • No foreign transaction fees

The Bilt card is absolutely a no-brainer for renters who love to travel. To learn more, read my full Bilt Review . It is the card I use the most right now (especially on rent days).

—> LEARN MORE

  • Earn 20,000 miles once you spend $500 on purchases within 3 months from account opening
  • 1.25x points on all purchases
  • 5x points on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel
  • Travel accident and car rental insurance

LEARN MORE —> LEARN MORE

  • bonus_miles_full
  • 1.5% cash back on all purchases
  • 5% cash back on travel purchased through Chase Travel
  • 3% cash back on restaurants and drugstores

If the cards above are a little too basic for your needs and you want something more intermediate, here’s a quick list of travel credit cards with affordable fees:

card_name ($95 annual fee) – 3x points on dining, online grocery purchases, and select streaming services, 2x points on travel (5x when booked through Chase Travel (SM) , travel protections, and a $50 annual hotel credit when you book and prepay through Chase Travel (SM) .

card_name ($95 annual fee) – 2x points on all purchases, 5x points on hotels/rental cars booked on Capital One travel, $100 Global Entry/TSA pre-check credit, 2 airport lounge visits per year.

card_name ($95 annual fee) – If you’re a business owner, this card offers 3x points per dollar on the first $150,000 spent each year on shipping, internet, phone, travel, and online advertising. It also offers free cards for employees.

While fee-based cards have better earning structures and travel benefits , if you’re new to the points and miles game, the idea of forking out for an annual fee might put you off from travel cards entirely. But if you love to travel (or want to travel more), not collecting points and miles is the biggest mistake you could make .

No-fee cards are a great place to start so that you can begin to work towards free flights and hotel stays today, without having to think about whether you’re getting enough value out of the card to justify the annual fee.

Book Your Trip: Logistical Tips and Tricks

Book Your Flight Find a cheap flight by using Skyscanner . It’s my favorite search engine because it searches websites and airlines around the globe so you always know no stone is being left unturned.

Book Your Accommodation You can book your hostel with Hostelworld . If you want to stay somewhere other than a hostel, use Booking.com as it consistently returns the cheapest rates for guesthouses and hotels.

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. My favorite companies that offer the best service and value are:

  • SafetyWing (best for everyone)
  • Insure My Trip (for those 70 and over)
  • Medjet (for additional evacuation coverage)

Want to Travel for Free? Travel credit cards allow you to earn points that can be redeemed for free flights and accommodation — all without any extra spending. Check out my guide to picking the right card and my current favorites to get started and see the latest best deals.

Need Help Finding Activities for Your Trip? Get Your Guide is a huge online marketplace where you can find cool walking tours, fun excursions, skip-the-line tickets, private guides, and more.
